Bristol's Slapstick Festival, which is dubbed Europe's biggest celebration of silent and classic comedy, has unveiled its 2024 lineup as well as a new strand celebrating comedy horror. Slapstick Festival will return between February 14-18 with a 20th annual edition.
There will be a selection of top-flight celebrity guests, which include Sir Michael Palin, Samira Ahmed, Alasdair Beckett-King, Hugh Bonneville, Marcus Brigstocke, Graeme Garden, Harry Hill, Robin Ince, Robert Lindsay, Sylvester McCoy, Christina Newland, Lucy Porter and Tim Vine, to name but a few.
More than 30 events will take place at venues across Bristol, saluting favourite film and TV and celebrating a new strand for the festival - comedy horror. Live music will accompany the festival's traditional package of rare, rediscovered and/or re-issued silent comedies, including films from the 1920s featuring Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Beatrice Lillie, Marie Provost and Norma Talmadge among others.

What's more, festival-goers can look forward to a collection of spoof/wacky horror flicks, the return of the Gala to the refurbished hall where it all started, regional premieres of films from Harry Hill and Time Vibe, look backs at two once hugely popular sitcoms, and more. The festival itself is a not-for-profit organisation, with its principal funders being Aardman Animations and BFI - awarding funds from the National Lottery.
Slapstick’s director Chris Daniels said: “February can be a miserable month, regardless of what’s happening on the world stage, but we’re certain the 20th edition of Slapstick contains enough variety and reasons to laugh out loud that it will lighten the mood of everyone who attends.”
Highlights for the 2024 festival include:
Star of the Paddington films, Hugh Bonneville, hosting the Slapstick Silent Comedy Film Gala in the new-look Bristol Beacon 's main hall, where films on the big screen will include Charlie Chaplin's 'The Gold Rush', accompanied by the Bristol Ensemble.
Sir Michael Palin and Robert Lindsay will revisit 'G.B.H', the Alan Beasdale political comedy in which they both starred, prior to a separate clips-rich event at which Lindsay will receive the Aardman/Slapstick Comedy Award honouring his many other comedy performances, including 'My Family' and 'Citizen Smith'.
Python and filmmaker, Terry Gilliam, will introduce the cult classic 'Brazil' and later share insights into his career before receiving the Aardman/Slapstick Award for Visual Comedy.
Harry Hill and Tim Vine will introduce the South West premieres of their newest films, plus the regional premiere of a new documentary starring Stan Laurel's touring hat, ahead of a Marcus Brigstocke-hosted chat with its makers.
Alasdair Beckett-King and Robin Ince will host a screening of the seminal comedy horror 'The Cat and Cradle' to kick-start a strand of chills and chortles events that will also round up a collection of strange early shorts, a live broadcast from New York, stories of when stunts go wrong and a family-friendly screening of 'Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein'.
There will also be a Tardis-style look back at the long and varied comedy career of Sylvester McCoy, known to millions as the seventh Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who series, and as a wizard in three of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films.
While broadcaster Samira Ahmed will be re-assessing with Graeme Garden whether the 70s/80s series 'The Goodies' he co-created, had more of an impact on social conscience than was realised at the time. And there will be a fresh look at the made-in-Bristol 1970s sitcom 'Big Jim & The Figaro Club', hailed in reviews as "an unsung masterpiece" and "a lost gem", with some of its stars and its producer.

The Scaffold - A Celebration
With Harry Hill
Part of Slapstick Festival 2023
This event has passed.
with John Gorman , Roger McGough and Mike “McGear” McCartney , and s pecial guest host Harry Hill
There’s never been a satirical performance group quite like The Scaffold. In the sixties and early seventies their unique blend of comedy, music and poetry packed out theatres at home and across the world and their frequent appearances on prime time TV ensured that John Gorman, Roger McGough and Mike “McGear” McCartney became much-loved household names. Equally loved by the mainstream and 1960s counter-culture, they produced hit after hit of chart-topping perennial favourites, including Thank U Very Much ( for the Aintree Iron), Lily the Pink & Liverpool Lou .
With superfan and guest presenter Harry Hill onboard you, can be sure of an evening of hilarious stories, sketches, poems, rare footage including a screening of their short film Plod (1972), and possibly even a song or two, all celebrating the fascinating history of The Scaffold.

Harry Hill unveils new live show for children
Catch the comedian on tour this autumn with How to Be Funny – for Kids!.
Find tickets here
Comedian Harry Hill has announced his first tour in five years and it’s designed to delight and entertain children.
Called Harry Hill’s Kidz Show: How to Be Funny – for Kids!, the tour will kick off in Bristol on 20 October 2018 and travel around the country, wrapping up in Kingston on 24 November.
Hill’s brand new show will coincide with the October release of his latest book, Matt Millz Stands Up . The sequel to Matt Millz , it continues the adventures of Britain’s youngest comedian, 12-year-old Matt, who aspires to be a stand-up. Like its critically acclaimed predecessor which Hill published in October 2017, Matt Millz Stands Up is part comic caper, part handbook for budding comedians.
Similar to the books, you can expect Harry Hill’s Kidz Show: How to Be Funny – for Kids! to be hilarious and packed with family fun, plus Hill will offer practical tips for children who are drawn to comedy. Some kids may even get the chance to try their hand at delivering a joke on stage.
No one is more qualified than Hill to give them advice. Considered a national treasure, he’s created some of the most successful television series of the past two decades and amassed three BAFTAs, eight British Comedy Awards and a Golden Rose of Montreux for his efforts. Among these shows are Harry Hill’s Fruit Corner , Harry Hill’s Fruit Fancies , Harry Hill’s TV Burp and the award-winning comedy show Harry Hill . In addition to being the host of ITV’s You’ve Been Framed! since 2004, Hill has also done programmes like Harry Hill’s Tea Time and the award-nominated Harry Hill’s Alien Fun Capsule .
His show is sure to be unlike anything kids have seen before, and promises to be full of laughs for all ages.
Here are the dates for Harry Hill’s Kidz Show: How to Be Funny – for Kids! that you can get tickets for:
21 October 2018 – New Theatre, Oxford 23 October 2018 – Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry 25 October 2018 – G Live, Guildford 26 October 2018 – Theatre Royal, Brighton 28 October 2018 – Milton Keynes Theatre, Milton Keynes 1 November 2018 – Wyvern, Swindon 10 November 2018 – New Wimbledon Theatre, Wimbledon 18 November 2018 – Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham 24 November 2018 – Roses Theatre, Kingston
