25 Best Things to Do in Lombok (Indonesia)

Many people who come to Indonesia looking for a beach holiday choose to visit Bali . The island of Lombok however is only a ferry ride away, and if you want to get away from the crowds and go somewhere a little less commercialized then Lombok is a great place to start.

Some of the highlights of this island include it stunning white sand beaches as well as clean seas and some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities to be had in Indonesia. It is also the home of the famous Mount Rinjani, so if you like trekking then a trip up to the summit of this active volcano is not to be missed. You will also find a slower pace of life here as well as a more relaxed setting, and if you want something different that is still easy to reach from Bali, then Lombok is the perfect choice.

Here are the best things to do in Lombok :

1. Party on Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, Nightlife

Gili Trawangan is known for being the biggest of the three main Gili islands and is also the most developed.

That said, don’t expect it to be anything like Bali.

There are no roads here and the only way to get around is to take an old fashioned horse and cart or you can walk or cycle around.

Despite the relative lack of development however Gili Trawangan has a jumping nightlife scene and is known for being dotted with beach bars where you can keep partying long into the night.

You can also expect to find a wide range of venues that play live music on a nightly basis as well as some clubs with dance floors.

During the day you can also enjoy the rest of what Gili Trawangan has to offer in the form of pristine white beaches and clear waters that are perfect for snorkeling or diving.

2. Trek to Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep

Lombok is known for its pretty waterfalls but one of the most famous of these is Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

This gushing cataract can be found in the north of the island and it is surrounded by gorgeous emerald jungle.

The waterfall is located in Senaru Village and the trek out to the waterfall takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on how fast you walk.

The route will take you past trickling jungle streams and you can check out the local flora and fauna in the forest as you trek to the waterfall.

The falls plunge down over 45 meters and you can expect to feel the cooling mist off the water as you take in the scenery.

You can also swim in the pool at the base of the cataract which can be a welcome break after a hot trek through the forest.

  • 3.  Relax on Gili Air

Gili Air

Gili Air is the second largest of the three main Gili Islands and is a good choice if you want something a little more serene than neighboring Gili Trawangan.

It is also one of the best places to come if you want to try some diving in Indonesia as the visibility is excellent.

You will find a range of spots off shore including pretty coral gardens that are the grazing sites of graceful turtles and elegant rays.

4. Enjoy Air Kalak Hot Springs

Rinjani Hot Spring

If you decide to trek up Mount Rinjani, the main mountain on Lombok, then make sure you stop off at Air Kalak Hot Springs which are around 200 meters away from the main campsite.

It is nestled close to the stunning Lake Segara Anak and there is no better way to celebrate after scaling Mount Rinjani than to soak away any aches and pains in the hot springs.

The waters here are said to have medicinal properties due to the high volcanic mineral content so if you want a soothing end to a hike then this is the perfect place to come.

5. Snorkel on Gili Meno

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is the smallest Gili Island and is well loved by families looking for a relaxing beach setting.

It is also popular with couples and if you want to spend some serene time on the sand then this is the place for you.

You will find some small strips of beach here and this is a top spot if you want to try snorkeling in Lombok.

Marine life abounds in these waters and you can go snorkeling with a good chance of seeing marine life like turtles and other sea creatures.

6. Visit a Pearl Farm

Autore Pearl Farm

People may not realize that Lombok is famous for its pearl farms, and this is big business in the area, with some of the prettiest pearls in Southeast Asia cultivated here.

One place where you can see the pearls is the Autore Pearl Farm and there is a tour which is perfect for tourists that will fill you in on everything you want to know about pearl cultivation.

There is also a showroom where you can buy some pearl products and support the local pearl farming business in Lombok.

7. Explore Kuta Lombok

Sunset In Kuta, Lombok

Kuta in Lombok is not to be confused with the more famous Kuta in Bali.

Unlike its famous sister, Kuta in Lombok is smaller and quieter and is basically a town with some pretty beaches close by.

The best way to explore Kuta is to hire a motorbike or a bike and driver and then make you way along the coast, stopping at any inlets or coves that take your fancy.

You are sure to find something that catches your eye and can spend the day sunbathing on the sands and sipping from fresh coconuts bought from a roadside stall.

8. Check out the views from Bukit Pergasingan

Seeing Rinjani Mountain From Pergasingan Hill

If you don’t want to hike all the way up Mount Rinjani then consider a trek to Bukit Pergasingan which is a hill that sits at around 1,700 meters above sea level.

The hill and lookout point is located in Simbalun Village and the big draw here is the surrounding scenery.

From Bukit Pergasingan you can look out onto the patchwork of fields below that come in a range of different hues and are one of the prettiest sights in Lombok.

9. Sunbathe on Selong Belanak Beach

Selong Belanak Beach

Selong Belanak Beach is located in South Lombok and is one of the prettiest beaches on the island.

Compared to the beaches in Bali, many of which can be crowded and littered, Selong Belanak Beach unwinds along a scenic bay and is made up of a long strip of clean golden sand.

You will also find a few local stalls that back on to the beach and you can get simple noodle and rice dishes here as well as a fresh coconut.

It is also possible to rent a surfboard or a sponge board here although the waves are not as consistent as they are in Bali so hardcore surf aficionados may be better off choosing another spot.

10. Climb Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani

Mighty Mount Rinjani is probably Lombok’s most famous attraction and for many visitors this is the main reason to come here.

Mount Rinjani is not just a mountain but actually a still-active volcano, as well as being the second largest volcano in Indonesia.

One of the big draws here is a trek to the crater at the summit where you can also take in an azure lake and some amazing views over wider Lombok.

There are a variety of different treks that you can choose, most of which last several days, and if you want to take it a little easier it is best to opt for one of the longer treks which will allow you to take your time.

Many visitors to Lombok say that a hike to the top of Mount Rinjani is one of the best experiences to be had in Indonesia, but note that the trek to the crater is strenuous and you will need to be in reasonably good shape if you plan to attempt it.

11. Explore Narmada Water Park

Narmada Park

Narmada Water Park is actually something of a misnomer as this is not an amusement park but actually more of a water palace.

The park was built in 1727 under the sage guidance of King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Karang Asem and is seen as an important religious and spiritual retreat by those who follow the Hindu faith.

Make sure to check out the amazing architecture here as the park is built to mirror the shape of Mount Rinjani which is the highest peak on Lombok and also considered to be a sacred mountain.

The park is surrounded by lush gardens which are perfect for an afternoon stroll as there are natural springs here that give the park its water element.

Narmada Water Park is not as grand as some of the more famous water parks in Bali but it is well worth a visit if you want to check out some ancient architecture in Lombok.

12. Tour the Sekotong Islands

Sekotong Islands

Lombok is an island in its own right but it is also surrounded by a myriad of other smaller islands which offer you the chance to check out a tropical paradise that feels miles away from the more crowded islands in and around Bali.

The Sekotong Island chain is a collection of small islands that can be visited on a day tour from the main island of Lombok, and they are not yet as well known as the neighboring Gili Islands, so this is a good pick if you want to get away from the crowds.

The islands are covered in white sandy beaches and have pretty outlying coral reefs, so if you like snorkeling then this is an excellent choice and you can enjoy a wealth of underwater flora and fauna.

13. Sunbathe in Senggigi

Senggigi Beach

Parts of Lombok are reminiscent of how Bali would have looked 20 years ago before the onslaught of tourists and one of these areas is Senggigi which is one of the main tourist parts on the island.

Despite being looked on as a central hub however, you won’t find a huge range of amenities, and this is more like a quiet enclave where you can relax and enjoy the beach that wraps around the coastline.

There are a range of restaurants and cafes here where you can grab a bite to eat and a drink as well as some hotels and resorts, but there is still a chilled out atmosphere here that lets you enjoy the beauty of the island.

14. Visit Tetebatu Village

Tetebatu Village

Tetebatu Village is similar in some ways to Ubud in neighboring Bali.

If you are looking for something a little different in Lombok and want to get off the beach, then Tetebatu Village makes a nice change of pace and this part of the island is set amongst gleaming emerald green rice paddies and forests that stretch far into the distance.

The village is a great place to learn more about the culture of the indigenous people of Lombok, called the Sasak, and you can also find out about traditional handicraft techniques in the area and pick up some souvenirs at the same time.

15. Go snorkeling at Pink Beach

Pink Beach Lombok

Pink Beach is the nickname for Tangsi Beach, and it is rather an ambitious one at that.

It is said to be called ‘Pink Beach’ thanks to its pink sand, although you have to look pretty hard to see any glints of a pink hue here.

Instead the beach is more of a strawberry-blonde shade, but it is still a nice spot to visit if you want to sunbathe on the sand or go for a swim.

One of the big draws at Pink Beach is the coral reefs that lie off shore, so if you like snorkeling you can get out into the water and take in all the colorful marine life that swims in these waters.

Other activities at the beach include canoeing around the sheltered bay which is perfect for anyone looking for a little more adventure.

16. Explore Gili Layar

Gili Layar

The Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok are getting more and more famous as a holiday destination in Indonesia, but these usually only include Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

Most of the time however people don’t visit, or even know about, Gili Layar which is also sometimes referred to by its nickname ‘The Secret Gili’. The island sits in the sea to the west of the three main Gili Islands and has a relaxed and laid back atmosphere that is ideal if you want to get off the grid and beat the crowds.

Locals will also tell you that some of the best snorkeling in Lombok is found off the coast of Gili Layar, so if you enjoy underwater scenery then this is a great place to find it.

17. Visit Semeti Beach

Semeti Beach

One of Lombok’s other famous beaches is Semeti Beach which is famous for is stunning volcanic formations.

The beach is covered in volcanic rocks which over time have been carved up by the waves making a series of small pools, bays, and inlets, as well as some pretty blow holes.

Despite its dramatic scenery, Semeti Beach is often not visited by travelers to Lombok, so this is one of the quieter and more secluded beaches which is a great place to explore if you like rock pools and climbing.

You can also go swimming here and admire the scenery from the vantage point of the water.

18. Trek to Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Benang Kelambu Waterfall stands at over 20 meters high and the water gushes over a tumbling cliff before crashing into a pool below.

The waterfall is also covered with gorgeous green plants and the scenery here is breathtaking, and you can get to the waterfall from neighboring Mataram, the capital city of Lombok which is around an hour away by car.

You can swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall and also get behind the curtain of water which leads to some great photo opportunities.

If you have had enough of checking out Lombok’s many beaches then this can offer a nice change of scenery.

19. Visit Sukarare Village

Sukarare Village

Many visitors to Lombok may not realize that this island has a thriving textile industry.

Many textiles made in Lombok are woven by hand and these include tenun ikat which is a kind of woven cloth made by men and tenun songket which is made by women and is usually inlaid with gold and silver thread.

One of the best places to check out Lombok’s weaving industry is at Sukarare Village which is located in the south of the island and you can join a traditional weaving workshop here and learn exactly how traditional pieces are made.

Needless to say you can also pick up a few pieces which make great souvenirs.

20. Go for a hike in Tanjung Ringgit

Tanjung Ringgit

If you like hiking then make sure not to leave Tanjung Ringgit off the itinerary, as this is one of the best trekking spots on the island.

Located in the south of Lombok, Tanjung Ringgit is covered in lush fields and you can enjoy views that stretch all the way across the sea.

Of course you can also see Mount Rinjani towering in the background and as you trek along the coastline you may even be lucky enough to spot a turtle or two bobbing in the water.

As you make your way along the cliffs here, also make sure to look out for the abandoned gun emplacements and bunkers that date from the time of the Second World War and would have been built here by the Japanese.

21. Trek to Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Mangku Sakti Waterfall is one of the most impressive in Lombok and is actually a number of cataracts that join together to pour down into a scenic gorge.

The trek out to the waterfall is an experience in itself as you will have to walk along a series of small and winding pathways through the forest, but the scenery more than makes up for the hike.

One thing to note however is that unlike many of the other waterfalls in Lombok you will need to exercise caution if you want to swim in the pools here, as the water is fast moving, particularly when it is the rainy season.

22. Tour Beleq Village

Beleq

Anyone who wants to learn more about traditional Sasak culture should take a trip to Beleq Village which is one of Lombok’s many indigenous local villages.

Beleq Village actually dates from the 14th century which means that it has a fascinating history, and you will find a range of traditional Sasak houses as well as a village hall and some typical Lombok-style gazebos called berugak.

One of the most interesting things about the village is that it hasn’t changed much over the years, although it is still a tourist village aimed at educating visitors about the traditional Sasak way of life.

23. Marvel at the waves at Tanjung Poki

Tanjung Poki

Tanjung Poki is known for its gorgeous scenery and this is also where you will find one of the most amazing natural phenomena in Lombok.

The area is made up of rock formations and craggy scenery and the rocks have been carved away by the ocean leaving several large blow holes in place.

When the tide is high the water rushes in and creates huge eruptions of water through the holes, and while you should be careful not to get too close, this is also not to be missed as one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Indonesia.

24. Visit Gunung Tunak National Park

Gunung Tunak

Gunng Tunak National Park is a great place to come in Lombok if you want to get some fantastic views of the local scenery and take in the beauty of the island.

The park has a number of trails including a three kilometer trek that will take you along the coastline to an old lighthouse that stands on the cliff side.

There is also a famous viewing platform in the park in the Taman Wisata Alam section which looks like a transmission tower, but you can climb the structure and see all the way across Lombok.

25. Camp at Lake Segara Anak

Lake Segara Anak

If you are going to trek up Mount Rinjani then one of the key places to stop along the way is Lake Segara Anak.

The lake is located insie the caledra at the summit of Rinjani and is surrounded by lush vegetation making it an experience not to be missed.

You can camp at the crater lake overnight and take in the beautiful turquoise waters in the day time followed by the spectacular stars over the rim as night falls.

MOUNT RINJANI HIKE

The trek begins in Senaru, a small mountainside village at the base of Indonesia’s second-largest active volcano, which is a whopping 3,726 meters high!

Senaru is the main hub for anyone wishing to take the Rinjani Trekking challenge.

There are dozens of tour companies that can organize the Mount Rinjani trekking located in the main towns of Lombok including Sengiggi, Mataram, Senaru, and Kuta Lombok.

However, from my experience, it’s best to organize your trip well in advance.

The best option is to book online with a professional and experienced tour operator and guarantee a fixed price for your trek.

TIU KELEP WATERFALL

Tiu Kelep Waterfall is by far the most amazing waterfall I have ever seen, and it’s not to be missed on your Lombok itinerary.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall is located in the mountainside village of Senaru, North Lombok.

Along the way, there are a couple of river crossings no more than knee-deep and a muddy trail that leads through the jungle to the jaw-dropping sight of Air Terjun Tiu Kelep.

There is no waterfall that I have seen that can compare to this. The water flows out of the walls and into a crystal clear pool below.

Please beware of the strong vortex-like current directly beneath the main water flow at Tiu Kelep Waterfall. Take extra caution not to get sucked in!

The rocks surrounding the base of the falls are super slippery, so be sure to wear a good pair of walking shoes .

When visiting Lombok, I highly recommend exploring the coastal town of Sengiggi .

This small yet vibrant town is the perfect place to experience traditional Indonesian culture and cuisine.

From fresh seafood marinated in zesty spices to unique handicrafts made by local artisans, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Stroll along the beachfront and take in stunning views of the ocean, or make it your base for a few days to explore the beaches and waterfalls around.

While it’s not as popular as Uluwatu , a coastal area in Bali, you’ll still find a few cafes, bars, and restaurants, as well as nice hotels where you can spend a night or two.

BUKIT SELONG SUNRISE VIEWPOINT

Bukit Selong sunrise viewpoint in the heart of Lombok is becoming a popular spot for travelers. It’s places like this which make Lombok one of the most beautiful islands in Asia .

There are three viewpoints at Bukit Selong that overlook a blanket of crop fields.

The first viewpoint is a hill which is located at a lower level from where you arrive at the jump-off point.

To reach the second viewpoint, walk further up the hill where you’ll see a wooden star on bamboo stilts that makes for a great vantage point.

And thirdly, on the other side of the hill, there is a treetop boardwalk that boasts another cool perspective of the surrounding landscapes.

BENANG STOKEL WATERFALL

Benang Stokel Waterfall is one of many waterfalls that can be found in the Central Lombok region.

When you arrive at the entrance to Benang Stokel Waterfall you will have to pay the entrance fee of around 50,000 IDR before you can continue to the trailhead to the falls.

To our surprise this wasn’t just one waterfall, in fact, there are several waterfalls on a 30-minute circuit trail through this valley in central Lombok.

The first waterfall Benang Stokel was my favorite, featuring three sets of falls that graciously flow into a shallow rock pool below.

Take your pick on which falls to take a natural shower under!

Lombok 282

BENANG KELAMBU WATERFALL

Benang Kelambu Waterfall is a further 15-minute walk along the trail from Benang Stokel.

The unique curtain falls at Benang Kelambu Waterfall are unlike any other that I’ve seen and you’ll definitely want to add this spot to your list of places to see in Lombok.

The unique feature of these falls is the water flowing through the plants of the cliff walls.

In fact, the word “ Kelambu ” means curtain, and the plants frame the waterfall just like a window and curtain.

Lombok 258

SOUTH LOMBOK (KUTA LOMBOK)

The southern region of the island boasts the majority of the Lombok tourist spots.

Better known as Kuta Lombok, it’s here you’ll find countless beaches, viewpoints, resorts, markets, restaurants, bars, and cafes!

See below for a list of all the best things to do in Lombok’s south.

BUKIT MERESE

Bukit Merese is one of the most popular spots on the island where you can explore rolling grass hills, swim at deserted white sand beaches, and marvel at the amazing view overlooking Kuta Lombok.

If you have a set of wheels, it takes approximately 15 minutes to drive to Bukit Merese from the main tourist town of Kuta Lombok.

There is a car park at the jump-off point to Bukit Merese and the parking fee is 5,000 IDR.

If you like, you can also buy beer, snacks, and water from one of the many mobile vendors in the car park.

The walk up to Bukit Merese viewpoint takes around 5 minutes where you will see the idyllic features of rolling grass hills and several small beaches and coves.

At the top, it’s a matter of picking your own spot to perch up and watch the sunset.

We decided to walk to a headland that stretches right out over the ocean and we had a grassy patch on top of Bukit Merese Hill all to ourselves.

The sky put on an incredible show for us displaying bright oranges and burning reds!

Hiking to the top of the hill is a challenging but rewarding experience, as you’ll be able to witness the beauty of the sunrise or sunset.

It’s worth noting that Pergasingan Hill is near Mount Rinjani, so you can see both in one day if you’re up to the challenge!

Make sure to bring your camera and capture the panoramic views, including the majestic Mount Rinjani in the distance.

TANJUNG AAN BEACH

After exploring Seger Point Beach, you can head east where you’ll find a white sand beach called Tanjung Aan.

Tanjung Aan Beach looks like something you would see on a postcard and it’s one of the most beautiful Kuta Lombok beaches worthy of checking out!

There’s not a whole lot to do here other than taking a long beach stroll, grabbing a bite to eat at one of the warungs, or jumping in the ocean to cool off.

Lombok 19

GERUPUK BEACH

Further east of Tanjung Aan, you can find Gerupuk Beach, one of the most popular surf spots in Kuta Lombok.

The surf break is quite far out off the coast and you will have to organize a boat to take you out to surf.

This can be easily organized through any of the friendly local surf guides that will approach you when you arrive at Gerupuk town.

The cost of a return boat trip to Gerupuk surf break is 50,000 IDR per person. You can also rent surfboards for 50,000 IDR for 2 hours.

Lombok 310

PANTAI BILASAYAK

Continuing on from Gerupuk you can find another beach called Pantai Bilasayak.

To get here, it’s a 30-minute drive from Gerupuk or a 1-hour drive from Kuta Lombok.

This location is well off the beaten track and definitely worth adding to your Lombok things to do list.

Pantai Bilasayak is part of an environmental park and the entrance fee is 100,000 IDR per person.

To get to Pantai Bilasayak, take the dirt road to the left when you pass through the entrance gates, and follow it right to the end until you reach the ocean.

This beach was deserted when we visited and a great spot for a swim on high tide.

If you are seeking an adrenaline rush try to spot the “lookout tower” on top of the cliffs in the distance.

To get to the tower, park your bike on the beach and trek for 10 minutes along the rugged cliffs till you reach the tower.

It is very rusty and sketchy but if you are an adrenaline junkie like myself it is worth the climb.

The view from the top is spectacular and overlooks more beautiful beaches down the east coast.

PANTAI TELUK UJUNG

Pantai Teluk Ujung is also located within the environmental park and a short drive from Pantai Bilasayak.

Head back the same way you came to Pantai Bilasayak toward the park entrance and before exiting, you’ll see a dirt road that leads to the left.

This track will emerge on Pantai Teluk Ujung, another deserted beach with rock pools and an awesome sunset spot.

PANTAI TELAWAS

To the west of Kuta Lombok is Pantai Telawas, a tucked-away paradise with several coves, blowholes, caves, and cliff jumps.

My friends and I spent a few hours here and were in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds this location.

Exploring Telawas Beach was one of the best adventures we had during our visit to South Lombok.

PANTAI SEMETI BEACH

Within walking distance from Pantai Telawas is yet another secluded beach called Pantai Semeti which will blow you away with its crystal-clear water and blinding white sand.

There were some small waves breaking over the reef here so we went for a body surf and then took some shade under the palm trees along the beach to get out of the scorching sun.

Another one of the top tourist spots in this guide of things to do in Lombok is Mawi Beach.

Mawi Beach is located on the other side of the headland from Pantai Semeti Beach and it’s one of my favorite beaches, especially being a surfer!

The waves here are as good as it gets when the conditions are right.

The tropical beach vibes here at Mawi Beach are hard to beat, featuring with small bamboo huts and swaying coconut trees, you’ll surely be in for a treat.

Lombok 49

PINK BEACH LOMBOK

The pink beach on Lombok island is one of the ultimate escapes, perfect for soaking up some sun alongside amazing views of the ocean.

With its unique pink-hued sand, rocky cliffs, and relative seclusion, it’s become an increasingly popular destination.

Those looking for a bit more activity can enjoy snorkeling in clean, magical waters. But I recommend going with a tour guide to get to the nicest spots.

In terms of transportation, you can easily get here as the way is paved, so there are no dirt roads. The entrance fee is 7,500 IDR per person and IDR 10,000 IDR per car.

Before making your way there, you should know that the beach isn’t as pink as it used to be, so keep your expectations realistic. That being said, it’s still an amazing spot to swim and snorkel.

CHECK OUT KUTA LOMBOK

Visiting and staying in Kuta Lombok is definitely one of the best experiences to have when on the island.

From dramatic cliffs to balmy turquoise waters and pristine white sand, the scenery here is simply spectacular.

Plus, what’s better for a surfer than riding world-class waves? Kuta is a surfer’s paradise, perfect for riding fun shore breaks and scoring world-renowned swells up and down the coast.

And on top of that, there are dozens of accommodations, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, bars, and even hiking trails.

Lombok 231

MAWUN BEACH

Situated about 15 minutes away from Kuta, you can easily get to Mawun Beach to surf a few waves, work on your tan, and enjoy the tranquillity that you won’t necessarily find in other parts of Lombok.

What I love about Mawun Beach is that it’s really clean, and the waves are pretty small, which is great for beginners. In addition, it’s a lovely spot to swim!

Lombok 155

TAMPAH BEACH

Tampah Beach is a tranquil, secluded beach with a wonderful stretch of white sand, ideal for those looking to relax and escape the more popular Kuta Lombok beaches.

The beach is clean, empty of tourists, and makes for good swimming.

There are basic facilities such as beach chairs with umbrellas to rent for only 20,000 IDR per person, and a small beach bar to buy simple snacks, drinks, and cold beer.

Make sure to pack a snorkeling kit as you’ll be able to see live corals if the tide is low!

Tampah Beach really is a great place to chill out on its beautiful sandy shores or explore the nearby areas – either way, you won’t regret it.

Lombok 52

RENT A VILLA AT TAMPAH HILLS

To make your stay even more unique, why not rent a villa at Tampah Hills ?

Tampah Hills offers several luxury villas with all that you need for a memorable time with your friends or family.

Providing only the best in luxury, your villa will become your home away from home! Enjoy seaside relaxation, adventure, and exploration – all in one place.

Prices are above average, of course, but you’ll understand why every penny is worth it as soon as you step in.

Lombok 54

SELONG BELANAK BEACH

Selong Belanak Beach is without a doubt one of the coolest places to see in Lombok.

Just 20 km from Kuta lies a stunning stretch of white sand beach where you can spend hours relaxing.

But that’s not it – apart from surfing, swimming, and chilling, you can see herds of water buffalo passing by, which, needless to say, adds a layer of uniqueness to this beach!

And if you’re new to surfing, you’ll find many instructors offering lessons and board rentals, which is great if you just arrived in Indonesia and want to learn to surf.

Sun beds here cost 50,000 IDR per person, which is more than other beaches, but still pretty cheap.

There are also several beachside warungs where you can order food and drinks.

TOMANG-OMANG BEACH

Tomang-Omang Beach, or Pantai Tomang-Omang as the locals call it, is just a few minutes’ drive to the west of Selong Belanak, so you could visit both on a day out.

The main difference between both beaches is that you won’t find any buffalos here, and definitely fewer people.

Note that this beach doesn’t have any stores selling food or drinks, so make sure to bring your own if you wish to spend some time here.

Lombok 127

GOA BANGKANG – KUTA LOMBOK BAT CAVE

Traveling to Lombok is much more than beaches and surfing, and the bat cave of Goa Bangkang is among the most unique experiences to have.

This mysterious cave, located only 5km from Kuta Beach, is home to thousands of bats (and cockroaches), and a labyrinth of tunnels.

The entrance fee is only 60,000 IDR which includes a welcome drink, a helmet, a torch, and a local guide.

Lombok 182

On the topic of caves, another great one to check out is Goa Sumur, which is known for its light rays and the dramatic staircase entrance.

It’s located around the corner from Goa Bangkang and features a huge cavern with thousands of bats clinging to the ceiling.

Opening hours are 9 am to 6 pm and the entrance fee is 100,000 IDR per person.

Lombok 164

LOKA SURF & FITNESS LODGE

Loka Surf & Fitness Lodge Kuta Lombok is an epic spot to hang out when spending time in Lombok.

Their motto is “Stay-Train-Eat-Surf” and it’s easy to see why!

Here you can find;

  • A cafe and bar
  • Accommodation

Enjoy a stay in one of their air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with its own private bathroom and balcony that provide panoramic views of the garden.

There’s also plenty to do such as staying active in their fitness center or taking part in some fun activities like table tennis and darts.

Fill up your tummy with a delicious à la carte, vegetarian, or vegan breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner options made available to you by the property’s restaurant.

LOKA LOMBOK

SHU RESTAURANT & BAR

If you’re looking for a chill night out with great views of beautiful Kuta Lombok, then Shu Restaurant and Bar is your spot!

An uphill scooter ride is all it takes to get here, and you’ll be ready to take in the breezy atmosphere and enjoy happy-hour cocktails.

From 4 – 7 pm, they offer delicious cocktails at just 40,000 IDR each, making it an unbeatable deal.

For the food, you’ll be treated to the typical Indonesian classics like nasi goreng for only 35,000 IDR or Western food such as caesar salad, nachos, or chocolate lava cakes.

So make sure to put Shu Restaurant on your list when you’re next in Kuta. It’s the perfect place for a tropical evening drink with friends.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO LOMBOK

The currency in Lombok is Rupiah (IDR), and the exchange rate is approximately $1 USD = 14,000 IDR.

90% of Lombok’s population is Muslim, and Hindu Balinese make up the remaining 10%.

MOBILE DATA:

When you arrive in Lombok, you’re going to want to get online, and purchasing a sim card is very simple. You can do this at the airport on arrival at one of the retail stores.

For approximately $7 USD, you can get a local sim card that comes with 10GB of data with calls and texts included.

Alternatively, I recommend purchasing an eSIM in advance with pre-loaded mobile data so you can get online as soon as you land and stay connected on your Lombok trip.

6 thoughts on “30 AWESOME Things To Do In Lombok – Ultimate 2024 Guide”

Hey Jonny, To visit the Tiu Kelep Waterfall, do I have to stay around Senaru village? I will be staying in Kuta, Lombok for 3 days. So I was thinking what if I can do a day trip?

Yes, it is recommended to stay in Senaru Village for sure. Tiu Kelep is a 3-4 hour drive from Kuta Lombok. Enjoy 🙂

i m planning to stay near kuta lombok beach. I want to go to Tiu Kelep Waterfall.. Is it possible to rent a bike and drive till Tiu kelep Waterfall? What are other ways to visit these waterfalls from Kuta Lombok? Please help.

Hello, Tiu Kelep waterfall is half a days drive from Kuta Lombok. It is possible to ride or take a taxi. I would recommend you stay in Senaru for a night if you plan to visit Tiu Kelep Waterfall. Enjoy!

This is a fab guide! We live in Lombok and you have covered some great spots! We also recommend the Monkey Forest on Kuta beach, and exploring further West – Tampah beach, Selong, Serangan. Also there is an amazing island – Gili Kondo – on the East where you can camp and snorkel – totally deserted and stunning! Hope you can revisit some day 🙂

Hey guys! Glad you love the guide. I will be sure to visit these places you have listed to add to my blog on my next visit to Lombok!

DETAILED Lombok Itinerary For The BEST Places to Visit in Lombok!

Categories Asia , Indonesia , Itinerary

Lombok Island is much less known and visited than its next-door neighbour of the Island of Bali but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t visit Lombok. In fact, this is the reason why you should visit Lombok and follow this Lombok itinerary!

Lombok feels wild and still untouched by tourism , however, there are still many things to do in Lombok and places to visit in Lombok for tourists.

This, combined with the fact that the roads are good meaning it’s great to explore Lombok by moped, and prices are much cheaper than Bali, makes Lombok the best and most underrated island in Indonesia I think.

To help you see the best of Lombok here is my Lombok blog on the places you should visit in Lombok, whether you’re planning your 1 week Lombok itinerary or 2 week Lombok itinerary!

Best time to visit Lombok

When is the best time to visit Lombok? Well, the first thing to know is that Lombok has 2 seasons.

Wet Season is from November to March and Dry Season is from April to October . You may think that dry season sounds more appealing but this means it is high season in Lombok during these months so it depends what you want when you’re thinking about when to visit Lombok.

Personally, I’d recommend the shoulder months as the best time to visit Lombok , because November, December and April bring less rain and also fewer tourists! I was in Lombok in December and we saw a bit of rain each day but it didn’t rain all day and is avoidable.

Best Places to visit in Lombok

Gili islands.

3 – 7 Days

The Gili Islands of Gili Trawangan , Gili Air and Gili Meno and part of Lombok, not Bali which is often what people think. Therefore the Gili islands have to be included on this Lombok trip itinerary!

On your Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary , I suggest spending at least  3 nights on the Gili Islands , either by spending all nights on one island or 2 nights on Gili T and 1 night on Gili Air for example.

With that being said, it’s also easy to spend 1 week in Gili Trawangan and 1 week in the Gili islands because there are so many things to do, but it is also really chilled so if you have time, plan to spend a good few days here on your itinerary for Lombok.

Things to do in Gili Islands

Getting in the crystal clear water is one of the best things to do in the Gili island s so be sure to go out snorkelling or diving .

Hiring a bike is the best way to see Gili T and you can cycle around the island in just a few hours. Be sure to look out for the Instagram famous Gili T Swings .

Come evening, be sure to watch the sunset  on this Gili islands itinerary. The Gili islands are known for their sunsets and then head out for a drink to see some live music on the beac h or get ready for a big night out because the nightlife in Gili T is famous!

How to get to the Gili Islands?

There are a few ways to get to the Gili Islands on this Lombok itinerary, you can come from Bali, Bali Airport, Lombok or Lombok Airport.

Bali to Gili Trawangan

The most popular route that people do is to land in Bali International Airport and then travel to Gili Trawangan.

There is only one port and pier in Bali where the boat from Bali to Gili Islands runs and that’s from Padang Bai in the North.

You can book a minibus and boat package which will pick you up from your Bali Hotel, take you to Padang Bai and then will take you to your boat over to the Gili Islands. The whole journey takes about 5 hours depending on where you’re staying in Bali and they leave 2 or 3 times a day.

Lombok to Gili Trawangan

The Gili Islands are much closer to the island of Lombok than Bali so it is quicker and easier to get to Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno from Lombok than Bali.

Where to stay in the Gili Islands?

There is so much accommodation on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air for all budgets, from hostels to high-end beach resorts.

Here is my guide to the best accommodation on the Gili Islands !

Bookig.com is also a great place to look for homestays and private Villas on the Gili Islands.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, Gili T 2 Bedroom Pool Villa Airbnb

Senggigi and Klui

2 – 3 Days

After visiting the Gili Islands which are arguably the best place to visit in Lombok on your Lombok itinerary. Head to mainland Lombok .

There are regular boats leaving all 3 Gili islands to Lombok , the best thing to do is to get a local boat to Lombok early in the morning as this is the cheapest option and only takes 20 minutes. The pier in Lombok is called Bangsal Harbour .

From Bangsal, head slightly South staying along the West coast to Klui and/or Senggigi.

Where to stay in Senggigi?

If you want to stay in a really quiet place with a nice, wild beach, perfect for surfing, stay in Klui.  I recommend staying at  Diva Lombok Resort  or Jeeva Klui Resort as the best hotel in Klui.

If you want to stay somewhere with a holidaymaker feel to it with more hotels, restaurants and bars, but still with a nice beach, stay in Senggigi .

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, Jeeva Klui Resort by Klui Beach

Things to do in Senggigi

If you want a surf lesson on this Lombok itinerary, go see my friends at Lombok Wave Surf Shack  in Klui for a lesson and a sunset chill, these are the best things to do in Klui and best things to do in Senggigi.

Related Post: Here’s my full blog post on things to do in Senggigi !

Most people think that the Gili islands are just Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno, but this is incorrect, there are lots more Gili islands, they just aren’t as popular.

From Senggigi, on this Lombok itinerary you can take a day trip to the really unknown Gili Islands of Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis and Gili Sudak.

Gili Nanggu is known as a Paradise Island and the snorkelling is fantastic, this 7 hour day tour will pick you up in Senggigi and take you to white sand beaches, bays and crystal clear water:

Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

For a day trip in Lombok on your Lombok itinerary, head to  Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls . These are located close to Mount Rinjani and you have to travel through the lush green-ness of Central Lombok to see them including lots of rice terraces in Lombok. They will only take up half a day as the walk around these Lombok Waterfalls is not too long or too intense.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu Waterfalls | Lombok itinerary

Mount Rinjani

If you’re up for a challenge on your Lombok itinerary and want to go hiking in Lombok, Mount Rinjani is the answer! Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and it is an active volcano. You have to hike up Mt Rinjani with a guide and it takes 2 nights and 3 days so be sure to plan this into your Lombok itinerary as you can’t do it in any less time.

It is a strenuous hike, but totally worth it! Here’s a look at a tour of Mount Rinjani that you can do:

If you don’t want to hike, going to Northern Lombok and staying in the area of Mount Rinjani is still a nice thing to do. Rinjani Lodge is a beautiful hotel with views over Mount Rinjani and they can help you with day tours to see the local area. Check out rates and availability for Rinjani Lodge here!

Kuta Lombok

2 – 5 Days

Kuta is the main backpacker hub on mainland Lombok so it when planning your backpacking Lombok itinerary, you should plan to spend a few days here! And if you backpacking Lombok, Pipes Hostel is a really great hostel in Kuta Lombok!

GETTING FROM BALI TO THE GILI ISLANDS

There is only one way to get from Bali to the Gili Islands and that’s my fast boat from Padang Bay.

You can wait until you arrive to book your boat or be organised and book it in advance here. Booking in advance is especially good during the summer and Christmas months!

How to get to Kuta Lombok?

Due to Kuta being the main hub, there are lots of taxis and buses available to take you there. If you have just hiked Mount Rinjani, your guide or hotel will be able to help you get to Kuta afterwards.

If you decide to visit Kuta first in Lombok, it is just a 30-minute journey from Lombok Praya International Airport to Kuta town.

Things to do in Kuta Lombok

If you are confident in riding a moped , this is by far the best way to get around Lombok and see all of the places near Kuta Lombok.

Surfing is one of the top things to do in Lombok and South Lombok is no different, you can go surfing on Kuta Beach which is close to the town.

These days there alongside the local warung restaurants in Kuta, there are lots of nice cafes and restaurants in Kuta serving Bali style Smoothie Bowls and avocado on toast so be sure to spend some time eating in the many cafes in Kuta Lombok.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, Cafes in Kuta Lombok

The best Kuta tourist attractions are the beaches near Kuta Lombok .

For a unique surfing experience on your Lombok itinerary, head to Gerupuk where you take a boat out into the ocean and surf in the middle of the sea , it’s such a cool experience and tourist attraction in Lombok. When you arrive in Gerupuk you’ll see lots of shops offering lessons. This is the only place you can do this in Indonesia!

Tanjung Aan Beach

Tanjung Aan Beach is a beautiful white sand beach and is just 20 minutes from Kuta town. There are some swings on the beach which make for great photos and plenty of sunbeds to sunbathe on. This beach is a must-visit on your Lombok itinerary!

From Tanjung Aan Beach you can see smaller beach coves to the right and you can actually walk up the hill and down to them if you fancy adventuring to a private beach!

Make sure you also stick around for sunset and head up Merese Hill for sunset.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, white sand in Tanjung Aan Beach

Selong Belank Beach

1 – 2 Days

For another beautiful quiet beach to visit on your Lombok itinerary , drive from Kuta to Selong Belank. The drive takes about 40 minutes and it is a beautiful drive, especially on a moped!

Selong Belank Beach is a white sand beach, also with plenty of sunbeds but what I love most about this beach is only part of the beach has restaurants a long it and you can easily walk to the end and be totally on your own.

Surfing in Selong Belank Beach is the most popular things to do in Selong Belank because the waves are good and there is no coral in the ocean meaning it’s super soft when you fall off! Go and see my friends at Aqia Surf Shop in Selong Belank Beach for a lesson with a great surf teacher!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, Selong Belank Beach

Be sure to stay on Selong Belank until sunset because not only is the sunset amazing, just before sunset, you’ll see some farmers taking their water buffalo along the beach which is a pretty iconic scene and Selong Belank Beach is only 1 of 2 beaches you can see the water buffalo at sunset in Lombok .

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog Lombok itinerary, water buffalo on Selong Belank Beach

When you are finally ready to leave Lombok whether thats after 5 days in Lombok, 1 week in Lombok, 10 days in Lombok or 2 weeks in Lombok, you can easily fly out of Lombok .

Lombok Praya International Airport is just 30 minutes away from Kuta in Lombok and you can book a transfer car to the airport here or once you are in Kuta. Lombok Airport and it is well connected to cities in Australia and South East Asia so I would recommend looking at flights on Skyscanner from here.

If there are no flights from Lombok to where you want to go, you can get cheap, internal flights from Lombok to Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia and fly elsewhere from there.

I hope you found this Lombok itinerary and the best places to visit in Lombok helpful!

23 Best Things To Do In Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is an island full of crazy adventures only an hour’s flight away from Bali. I spent almost two weeks on the island, exploring the best things to do in Lombok. I visited amazing waterfalls, trekked Mount Rinjani, and explored the south coast near Kuta Lombok.

THINGS TO DO IN LOMBOK: THE BUCKET LIST

  • Ultimate Luxury: Jeeva Santai Villas – Beautiful, luxurious villas
  • My Favorite: Martas Windows – Best value in Lombok for a bungalow with a pool
  • Best Hostel: Boogie Hostel is easily the best value hostel in Lombok

How many days do you need to explore Lombok

You could honestly spend a month here and not have seen half of the waterfalls or hidden beaches. However, most travelers don’t have a full month on their hands. I stayed in Lombok for ten days and managed to fit in all of the adventures you can find below. The minimum amount of days I would visit Lombok is 5 days. The main thing to consider is the different regions of Lombok you want to visit.

If you are hiking Mount Rinjani, add three days to your itinerary straight away. My suggested minimum time to explore Lombok is a week but a couple of weeks would be ideal.

23 Adventurous things to do in Lombok

I’ve split up the things to do in Lombok by region so you can plan your itinerary accordingly and I’ve also linked the full blog posts on certain adventures so you can get more detailed information, maps and check out the photos from each of the things to do in Lombok.

North ern Lombok

The North is where you’ll find most of the mountain and waterfall adventures. Lots of travelers never leave the south, but I fell in love with the north of Lombok.

Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint

Bukit Selong Rice Fields viewpoint is a patchwork of farm plots viewed from various mountain tops. We had seen a ton of photos but couldn’t find a set location. Arriving before sunrise we managed to find a designated viewpoint without a big climb. There are more epic spots but this is the most accessible and simplest way to get a cool view of the fields.

A variety of different colored crops create a contrasting patchwork quilt, covering the entire valley. There is a flat viewpoint, which gives you a great view of the whole valley but there is also a higher viewpoint. We climbed up the hill, still with heavy legs from trekking up Rinjani and sat under the wooden star while it began to rain.

Sendang Gile Waterfall

Sendang Gile Waterfall is a stunning natural wonder located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. The waterfall is situated in the foothills of Mount Rinjani, the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. The crystal-clear water cascades down from a height of 30 meters, creating a picturesque pool at the base of the waterfall. Surrounded by lush greenery and towering cliffs, Sendang Gile is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts and easily one of the top waterfalls on Lombok.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep is the most famous waterfall in Lombok. From Sendang Gile you follow the river for fifteen minutes, often walking through the water and making several crossings along the way. You will arrive in an incredible amphitheater with mist blowing everywhere. It is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been and definitely up there with my favorite things to do on Lombok.

Waterfalls pour out of the wall and then a huge, diagonal gushing flow pours down with extreme force over the top of them all. Be careful swimming beneath the falls as some people have gotten into trouble being sucked into the extreme pull of the waterfall impact zone.

Book a tour:  Hire a driver for the day and visit Tiu Kelep Waterfall, Sendang Gile Waterfall, Mount Rinjani Viewpoints, and more on the North Lombok Day Tour . This tour is a great way to see the best attractions the north of Lombok has to offer.

Trekking up Pergasingan Hill

Pergasingan Hill is an epic viewpoint at the top of a steep 1-hour trail north of Lombok. The trail is suitable for most hikers and offers some of the best views in all Lombok! It is best done for sunrise or sunset and you can even camp at the top with the help of a trekking guide.

Pergasingan Hill is in Sembalun, which is right near Mount Rinjani. In fact, you pass by the launch-off spot for the Mount Rinjani Trek and the big volcano looms in the background on the other side of the valley throughout the Pergasingan Hill Trek.

The trek up Pergasingan Hill takes about 1 hour but it was halfway up that the light flowed into the valley and the conditions were just prime. Fog covered the farm fields and the base of the mountains while the morning light created beautiful shadows in the creases of the sharp ridges on the mountains in the distance.

Contact Rinjani Dawn Adventures: If you would love to get in touch with Rinjani Dawn Adventures about trekking Pergasingan Hill or other hikes in Lombok you can do so by clicking through to their booking page  here .

Camping on Pergasingan Hill

When I camped on Pergasingan Hill, I came from the backway in a small village and instead of an hour up, it took 2.5 hours to wind our way around the ridge. You will only find this private access point at the back of houses with tour guides.

We had a bonfire at night and an epic sunrise in the morning.  If you do have the time to camp here it is a great place for an overnight stay. There are lots of little areas to explore and an awesome experience. My first hike was great but camping was 10x better.

Mount Rinjani Trek

Trekking Mount Rinjani was one of the most epic journeys of the year for me! We endured three days and two nights led by our guide and two porters to the summit of Mount Rinjani, an incredible 3,726 meters.

Mount Rinjani trekking opens from April until January. After January the rainy season kicks in and Mount Rinjani trekking can get quite dangerous. April and May are the quietest months of the year for trekking and actually, have some of the best views as the landscape is incredibly green. The best time to climb Mount Rinjani would be in May to enjoy the best views and quieter crowds.

Embarking on a Mount Rinjani trek is an unforgettable experience that should be on every adventurer’s bucket list. The trek is challenging, but the rewards are worth it. The views from the summit are breathtaking, and the surrounding scenery is simply stunning. The trek takes you through lush forests, past beautiful waterfalls, and to the edge of a stunning crater lake.

Camping on Senaru Crater Rim

During the earthquakes and often during variable weather, hiking to the summit of Mount Rinjani is closed. However, the Senaru Crater Rim hike is usually open. It is very safe with no real drop-offs. You walk up through the jungle on a mostly shaded trail. It is incredibly steep and a real leg-burner. The hike to the crater rim takes about 6-8 hours.

When you arrive at the campsite for the night, you are right on the rim of the volcano crater. So you essentially see everything you would from the summit anyway… from just a little lower. You can see all the way into the crater,  out over the horizon to Mt Agung and you are above the clouds for sunset.

Black Sand Beach near Senaru

The morning after our Senaru Crater Rim hike, we headed on a 20-minute drive down toward the coastline. There aren’t too many beach names but this whole stretch is amazing with black sand beach and coconut trees. On a clear day, you even look back up to Mount Rinjani from the beach.

You can type in Pantai Greneng on google maps but I headed right from the little port there rather than to the left to Pantai Greneng. The water was beautiful and there were zero other people at the beach.

Central Lombok

Benang stokel and kelambu waterfalls.

Benang Stokel and Kelambu Waterfall are two spectacular waterfalls located in the foothills of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. Benang Stokel is a twin waterfall, with water cascading down from a height of 20 meters into a crystal-clear pool. Kelambu Waterfall, on the other hand, is a bit more secluded and hidden away in the jungle. It is a multi-tiered waterfall with water flowing down from a height of over 30 meters.

Both waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery and towering cliffs, making them an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Visitors can take a short trek through the jungle to reach these waterfalls and enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool water. With their natural beauty and serene atmosphere, Benang Stokel and Kelambu Waterfall are definitely worth a visit when exploring the island of Lombok.

Once inside you will only have to walk for about 15 minutes until you reach Benang Stokel Waterfall. It’s actually three beautiful waterfalls flowing down into a shallow pool. Around the corner is the jump spot, where you can find an 11-meter jump, which landed in a canyon.

South Lombok

Seger beach surf point.

From Seger Beach, you can make the 10-minute trek over the hill to the surf point or you can drive directly. More huts line the beach and the vibes here couldn’t be any more chill. It’s a really nice break but has some shallow reef.

You will need to rent your board in Kuta Lombok town before arriving at Seger Beach as there are no rentals available at the huts. Surfing is one of the most popular things to do in Lombok, especially in the south.

Sunset Point Kuta Lombok – Bukit Merese Hill

Bukit Merese Hill in Kuta Lombok is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to witness one of the most stunning sunsets in Indonesia. This natural hilltop viewpoint is situated on the southern coast of Lombok and offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding countryside. From the top of Bukit Merese Hill, visitors can enjoy a spectacular sunset, which paints the sky in hues of orange, pink, and red, creating a breathtaking scene. The hike up to the top of Bukit Merese Hill is relatively easy and offers visitors a chance to witness the natural beauty of Lombok up close.

Day Trip with Project Hiu

Book a day trip with Project Hiu for a once-in-a-lifetime experience on Lombok. The Project Hiu day trips provide an opportunity to explore the reefs and wildlife of East Lombok, utilizing repurposed shark fishing boats for an eco-conscious experience. I’ve done a week-long trip with Project Hiu and their shark conservation efforts are hands-on and eye-opening. These day-trips are the best way to support the project and your tour guides are actually going to be ex-shark-fisherman that Project Hiu helped retire from shark fishing and become tour guides.

Departing at 7 am from Kuta Lombok, the tour makes its way to East Lombok where the group boards the ex-shark boat and sets off for a swift journey to our exploration sites. A minimum of four people is required to book the trip with Project Hiu , and they can accommodate up to eight people for a more intimate and enjoyable experience.

Paragliding

On our Project, Lombok trip was lucky enough to get to try Paragliding up on Prabu Hill. The view from the hill itself was incredible and that only got better once we were in the air. I had never done paragliding before but in case you don’t know what it is, you essentially sit in a harness attached to the guide/professional!

You do a little jog down the hill and then the wind picks up your sail/parachute and all of a sudden you are in the air. It’s not a high adrenaline activity and is actually quite relaxing as you float up and down the coast with great views.

Compared to skydiving, bungee, and other adrenaline activities this one is actually great for the whole family. If you want to inquire about making a booking you can contact our guides on Whatsapp : +62 823 4083 2043 or Instagram:  @dodiparagliding

Batu Payung rock formation

Batu Payung is a pretty crazy rock formation on the edge of the coast. Erosion over thousands of years has shaped the rock, which somehow still manages to remain standing. We hiked up the hill to take in the views but you can also access the rock formation by walking along the coastline all the way from the beach.

Tanjung Aan Beach

Lombok was extremely quiet when we visited during November, and that was no exception when we went for lunch at Tanjung Aan Beach. Mango smoothies and Nasi Goreng were on the menu as we enjoyed the entire beach, restaurant and sun beds to ourselves. It’s not often you pay $3 for lunch and get your own private beach. One of the must-visit spots on Lombok.

Tanjung Aan Palm trees

There are coconut trees all over Lombok so this area is nothing extraordinary. However, it is right next to the beach and we decided to cruise around on our bikes taking some photos and messing around in amongst the coconut palms. One of my favorite things to do on Lombok was to simply get lost on Lombok.

Pantai Bilasayak – The Lombok Tower

Our crew jumped on the mopeds and powered towards Pantai Bilasayak. It was a solid drive from Kuta Lombok maybe more than an hour! However, we wanted to check out a tower on the coast we had heard about. What we didn’t know was that it was $10 entry because it is inside an environmental park. As it was almost sunset we managed to convince the guard to let all four of us in for $10.

The beach was once again entirely empty and we parked the mopeds and began heading along the coast. From the beach, you can see the tower and all it takes is a 10-minute trek up the hill along some epic cliff faces. The tower is rusted, pretty tall and would definitely fall into the sketchy category. Right up my alley.

From the top of the tower, we had views up and down the whole coast. Even from the top, we couldn’t see a single person in any direction. It’s probably one of the more sketchy things to do in Lombok.

Bumbang Beach sunset reflection pools

After you scale the tower jump back on your mopeds and cruise back to the entrance gate of the environmental park. Stay in the park but take a different route that will lead you to Bumbang Beach. Surprise, surprise another stunning, deserted beach. We made it just in time for sunrise and the tidepools and colors in the sky put on a show for us!

Semeti Beach

From Kuta Lombok, we decided to head west and check out some of the beaches and surf spots down this scenic side of the island. Our first stop was at Semeti Beach. It was a pretty epic spot with lots of small islets, coves, caves, and blowholes.

We spent way too long adventuring around and checking out viewpoints and different areas at Semeti Beach. It isn’t somewhere you will find any tourists and we shared it with nobody on the day we went.

Just around the corner is another beach, supposedly also called Semeti Beach. These two may have different local names but I couldn’t get anything other than Semeti out of the people I spoke to. Visiting Semeti was one of the most chill things to do in Lombok. We hung out at the sandy Semeti beach area for a while, enjoying a dip in the crystal clear water and sending up the Dji Mavic for some fun shots.

Mawi Beach is one of the most popular surf spots on the island. Bamboo huts line the beach, keeping surfers cool in the shade in between sessions. The waves weren’t huge on the day we went but big enough for a few of the surfers to catch some nice rides.

This is a beach you can hang out all day at. You can buy lunch, coconuts, and snacks in between surfs and swims although the prices are a little bit more expensive than Kuta Lombok as it is a bit more isolated. If you are a surfer this is one of the best things to do in Lombok for you!

Secret Gilis Island Hopping Tour

When you hear about ‘The Gilis’, an immediate reaction is to think about the three popular islands Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. These three islands have become popular snorkeling, party and relaxation spots – a getaway from the over-crowded Bali.

However, there are more Gili’s than you know. In fact, there are 26 different Gili’s near Lombok. While on Lombok, I did the ‘Secret Gili’s’ tour. While the islands are far from secret they are beautiful and a something new to explore with great marine life, tiny sandbars and a lunch-stop on the shore of a remote island.

Sunset on the west coast

After chilling at Mawi Beach all afternoon we decided to head further down the coast. Our aim was to find a clifftop for sunset but we never find one that we thought would be simple enough to climb. We drove for 30 minutes past Mawi Beach and finally just pulled in at a random beach and it was pretty amazing.

The entire stretch of beach, which was several kilometers long, was untouched. There aren’t many places in Asia you get to watch the sunset on a long stretch of sand all to yourself. This was our last night in Lombok and a perfect send off!

WHERE TO STAY IN NORTHERN LOMBOK

If you are visiting attractions in the north such as Tiu Kelep or Mount Rinjani you should choose one of the three accommodations in the ‘ Northern ‘ section below.

  • Jeeva Santai Villas – Luxury Villa : Great location on the beautiful Mangsit Beach but also within driving distance of Tiu Kelep and Mount Rinjani. It is a location that offers the best of both worlds.
  • Hakiki Inn Bungalows  – Value: Set on the edge of rice fields with the jungle feel but the comfort of a private bungalow.
  • Blue Mountain Cottage – Budget (but also value) : This is where I stayed. The room was very basic but it was comfortable enough with a basic private bathroom.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF LOMBOK

If you are staying in the south to enjoy the beaches and surf in Kuta, Lombok you should choose one of the three accommodations in the ‘ Southern ‘ section below.

  • Harmony Villas – Luxury : The beautiful white theme throughout the property contrasts against the emerald green pool and plants. The villas are laid out impeccably and the best part about this 4-star villa is that it actually isn’t as expensive as it looks.
  • Martas Windows   – Value/Luxury : This place is incredibly beautiful. Bungalow-style villas surround the modern pool at this amazing property. For less than $80 a night, you can get yourself what would cost hundreds of dollars in most other countries at Martas Windows .
  • Boogie Hostel Kuta Lombok – Budget : The Boogie Hostel is everything you ask for in a hostel. It’s super modern and clean and has lots of chill spaces as well as lockers for your gear and blinds for privacy at your dorm.

Lombok Island in Indonesia surprised us. While exploring it, we wondered why so many tourists pass it by!

Honestly, it is such an easy and cheap destination to visit after your holiday in Bali; we do not understand why tourists still mainly undiscovered this island.

Things to do in Lombok Island

Not that we mind, as that was one of the things we loved about Lombok: the quiet, raw, wild island with its truly diverse landscape!

There are so many beautiful things to do in Lombok and incredible places to discover!

People there are on slow mode—except for when they are driving, maybe (which can be a little crazy)—so take your time as you check out all our suggestions of what to do in Lombok Island.

The Absolute Best Things to Do in Lombok Island, Indonesia!

It’s pretty easy to get from Bali to Lombok Island . You have the option of either taking a quick 30-minute flight or hopping on a fast boat ferry.

Once you arrive in Lombok, hiring a scooter to explore at your own pace is best.

We have grouped the activities and stops around two main locations in Lombok, Kuta and Senggigi. Let’s first look at the destinations and activities around Kuta.

The Top Things to Do in Kuta, Lombok

The best way to explore the Kuta, Lombok region is, of course, by scooter.

You will see loads of people buzzing around with scooters and surfboards, heading back and forth to some of the most beautiful beaches you might ever see.

We loved exploring this region and thought it was Lombok’s best area to explore with your kids.

And to add another note, the beaches here are much more beautiful than those in Bali! The colors of the water? All I can say is WOW!

1. Selong Belanak Beach (the Best Beach in Lombok) and Laut Biru Cafe Lombok

What to do in Lombok - Selong Belanak Beach Lombok

I reckon that Selong Belanak Beach is, without a doubt, the best beach in Lombok.

We were blown away by the colors of the water and the hilly landscape surrounding the edges of this fantastic mile-long beach.

The beach has a peaceful vibe to it, with shallow, calm ocean water for the kids to play in.

When I return to Lombok, this is definitely where I will base myself, at Sempiak Villas.

At this beach, you will also find a perfect cafe for lunch. The Laut Biru Cafe is on the ocean sand, with gorgeous decor and delicious food (try the Butter Chicken with Naan!).

2. Mawun Beach

Things to do in Kuta Lombok - Visit Mawun Beach

Another glorious, stunning beach is the Mawun Beach! This beach is another great beach to swim at.

It’s very similar to Selong Belanak Beach but heaps smaller in size.  Here, you will find more local activity and maybe a few kids trying to sell you fresh coconut or handmade bracelets.

Remember, if you use furniture, chairs, or loungers on the beach in Indonesia, someone will come around and charge you for them. Fortunately, they are pretty cheap to hire!

3. Ashtari Restaurant & Lounge

Ashtari is a pretty popular stopping point for travelers. Their atmosphere and views are hard to beat.

Ashtari Restaurant & Lounge

It’s a great place for some mid-afternoon snacks and drinks. The breeze was heaven as well.

Do make sure you pop in to Ashtari, I bet you will enjoy your time relaxing there!

4. Kuta Beach, Lombok

Kuta Beach in Lombok is way better than Kuta Beach in Bali.

However, it is probably my least favorite beach out of all the beaches that line the coast.

It is worth stopping, walking, and enjoying the atmosphere, but I wouldn’t base myself here on this beach for the entire day!

Of course, the main streets in Kuta, close to the beach, are lined with market stalls for tourists, and you will find loads of cafes and wood-fired pizza cafes there, too.

5. Tanjung A’an Bay

Tanjung A’an Bay Lombok

Tanjung A’an Bay is another stunner!  We loved the grass-topped beach-style pagodas, and of course, our kids totally enjoyed the swing located on the beach as well!

Tanjung A’an Bay Lombok Indonesia

It is another great beach area for swimming and chilling out. On our visit, there were literally about 6 other tourists there.

The rest of the people were locals trying to make a living by selling their wares to us, such as handmade sarongs, bracelets, etc.

We didn’t stay here very long, but it was great to walk around the beach!

6. Seger Beach

Seger Beach - Lombok Indonesia

Seger Beach is probably the most unique beach out of all the beaches around this side of Lombok.

The beach here is not really for swimming, but it is a perfect spot to visit in the late afternoon.

We climbed up the hill closest to the beach, and the views blew us away!

So either base yourself here for the beautiful sunset views or if, like us, you have small kids, why not venture over to Kuta Cabana for some sunset views from a further distance?

7. Kuta Cabana for Sunset

Kuta Cabana for Sunset Chill Vibes

Kuta Cabana is set back behind Kuta up in the hills. It makes for a great stop at the end of a busy day, where you can grab a cocktail and watch the sunset with some cool breezes blowing through your hair.

We also ordered some food here for dinner. It was a peaceful spot to rest after a busy day of exploring!

8. Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach), Lombok

Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach), Lombok

If you are keen to go on a day trip from Kuta, you might also like to visit the beautiful Pink Beach (also known as Tangsi Beach) in Lombok.

If you hire a scooter, this trip will take you around 2 hours one way. However, be aware that the road for the last 30 minutes or so is pretty rough, and many people mention how hard it is to get to the beach itself as a result!

The sand on this beach is white, but it has a pink hue due to some tiny pieces of bright red coral skeletons of Organ Pipe corals.

The hue is pretty subtle, unlike the saturated colors found all over the web! Despite this, it is still incredibly beautiful to see and worth the trip if you happen to have time!

What to Do On the Drive from Kuta to Senggigi or Vice Versa

On the drive from Kuta to Senggigi (around 1.5 hours), you can stop over in the traditional Sasak Village called Sade in Rambitan.

Traditional-Sasak-Village-called-Sade-in-Rambitan_thumb

Although the village has a very touristy feel, it still makes for a very interesting and brief stop!

The Sasak are the indigenous people of this island, and here at Sade, you can get some insight into their fascinating culture!

The village is still inhabited by Sasak people. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a tour guide who will take you through the village and share some insight into the culture!

The tour only lasted 10-15 minutes, and while we enjoyed it, we felt like it was rushed!

My favorite part of the tour was being allowed into one of the Sasak Village houses. The house is dark! The men sleep on the first level, while the ladies all sleep on the second level; you will also find the kitchen there.

It was all fascinating to see!

The Top Things to Do in Senggigi, Lombok

Senggigi is the most popular destination for tourists traveling to Lombok. Most tourists come here because you can pick and choose from a large variety of luxurious resorts and villas.

There is also a selection of fantastic things to do in Senggigi for when you feel like exploring.

1. Head over from Senggigi to Gili Islands

What to do in Senggigi: Day trip to Gili Islands

Of course, the popular Gili Islands are easily accessed from this side of Lombok Island.

Within only a short taxi ride to Bangsal Harbour and a quick speedboat trip of only around 20 min, you will find yourself in a different world!

As a note, I highly recommend that you stay at Gili Islands for at least three nights; a day trip over will likely not be enough.

2. Join a Tour to Mount Rinjani and Crater Lake

Top things to do in Lombok:Mount Rinjani

Most people venture out to Lombok because they would like to climb the second-highest volcano in Indonesia.

It happens to be one of the island’s highlights, and I think you will understand why once you see the views from the rim of the volcano!

You can book various multi-day, guided tours to the Crater Lake. If you would like to experience a 3-Day Mt Rinjani Volcano Trekking Tour from Lombok, click here or alternatively why not try out the 2-Day Mt Rinjani Volcano Trekking Tour from Lombok version instead!

3. Day Trip to Explore Tiu Kelep or Sendang Gile Waterfalls

Lombok Attractions Tiu Kelep or Sendang Gile Waterfalls

Why not organize a day trip up into the Northern regions of Lombok?

There, you can visit two incredible waterfalls (amongst others) – Tiu Kelep Waterfall and Sendang Gile Waterfall.

These two waterfalls are close to each other, and while both are very different from the next, they make a great day out in nature!

Be prepared to get a bit wet, and make sure you have shoes that you can walk in. But don’t forget to take your swimmers so you can venture into the icy cold waterfall water!

If you would like to experience these and more on an organised day trip tour, we highly recommend you look into this Viator Northern Lombok Day Tour .

Final Thoughts on What to Do On Lombok Island

We loved our adventure through this island, and with so many options for what to do in Lombok, we highly recommend that you stay and visit this gorgeous place for a while.

We wish to return and wish to stay for longer. I want to slow down to the Lombok pace, hang out with the buffalos and the locals, and explore more of this fascinating island.

There is so much to see here and so many unique and diverse landscapes to explore!

The locals are friendly, and the kids are adorable!

The beaches are mind-blowing, and the waterfalls are impressive in their own right!

So take your time, explore each of the ‘best things to do in Lombok’ items individually, but make sure you also have days to do simply and totally ‘nothing at all’!

The Absolute Best Things to do in Lombok Island, Indonesia!

Hi Jolene Thanks for your post, sounds like you had a great trip. We are heading to lombok next year with our 4 and 6 year olds, and are thinking about staying in Kuta or south Lombok somewhere (as well as 5 days on Gili Air). Just wondering how easy you found it getting around the south Lombok area? We have been advised to hire scooters, but I’m not too sure about that with our two little ones. Did you hire a car and drive, or did you hire a car and driver? Thanks! Kara

Hi Kara, there are loads of drivers that you can hire. They aren’t taxi’s but the hotel you stay at will have a few people who they can buzz to take you around. We mostly just hired a driver for the whole day to take us around. Do bargain the price a bit. You could possibly take a kid each on a scooter, the roads in Kuta weren’t busy and it seemed manageable. But you would need a driver to take you from Kuta to Senggigi to get to Gili as it is a bit of a trip and there will be sections with heavy traffic there!

Lombok does have its own impression because the island is very beautiful and I am happy to be here. In addition, Bali is really beautiful as well.

Thanks for your great post! Just arrived in Kuta after travelling for some months and were wondering what to do first (tomorrow). Having naan and butter chicken at Selong Belanak Beach and take some photographs it will be!

We dont have children, but love your website.

Lovely, do enjoy the beach Simone! When we return to Lombok, I want to stay at Selong Belanak Beach 🙂

Lombok is one of the greatest places in Indonesia, a big island full of nature and not so crowded as the Gilis.

18 Things to do in Lombok, Indonesia (The Ultimate Lombok Guide)

18 Things to do in Lombok, Indonesia (The Ultimate Lombok Guide)

Lombok is often an island that is overlooked and skipped in many people’s Indonesian itineraries. This island is Bali’s bigger neighbour that is more mountainous, less crowded and is still a surfers paradise. Think lush green jungle, towering waterfalls, epic viewpoints over rice fields and almost deserted beaches and you have Lombok.

Sounds dreamy doesn’t it? If you’re the type of person who likes to get more off of the beaten track then skip some of the attractions in Bali and make your way to Lombok island or even further to Flores . Though the island isn’t totally off the beaten path, far fewer travellers come to Lombok than Bali and it is home to the famous Gili Islands.

I’ll be honest, Lombok was my least favourite island in Indonesia mainly because it cost more to get around and I didn’t find the locals as friendly as other Indonesia islands but this was my personal experience and I’m sharing details below so you’ll be prepared price wise. Many people rave about Lombok, especially if they’re surfers.

Believe me, I think the island is well worth visiting if you love natural landscapes, trekking, waterfalls and beaches! But you’ll have to travel Lombok and find out for yourself.

All prices are in Indonesian rupiah. See up to date conversions with  XE Currency .

How to Get to Lombok

You have a few options when getting to Lombok.

How to get to Lombok from Bali: From Bali you have the choice of flying or by boat. A flight is half an hour and you will land in Lombok’s only airport in Kuta which is in the south.

Or you can choose to travel by boat. The public ferries depart from Padang Bai Harbour in Bali and arrive in Lembar Harbour in Lombok (near Senggigi). The journey takes 4-5 hours, ferries leave every hour and tickets can only be bought at the harbour for 46,000 per person (prices change frequently though).

Lastly, you have the option to take a fast boat which takes about 2 hours. Fast boats in Bali don’t always have the best reputation so make sure you do your research before booking. Prices range from $35+ USD.

How to get to Lombok from Gili Islands:  You have two choices to get to the Lombok Bangsal Harbour from all of the Gili Islands. Public boats are available that cost less than 20,000 and differ depending on which island you’re travelling from. The furthest away is Gili T and takes 40 minutes. The downside is that you have to wait until the boat is full to leave.

The second option is to take a fast boat which are more expensive (around 80,000). Tickets are be purchased at one of the many tourist shops on any island.

How to Get Around Lombok

Getting around Lombok is just like Bali, there is no public transport but there are multiple places to visit in Lombok. There is no GoJek in Lombok like there is in Bali for cheap rides. Instead in Lombok you will have to hire private drivers to get around between destinations which is costly. I paid 500,000 to get from Sembalun in the north to Kuta in the south which was about a 2.5 hour drive. From places such as Kuta and Senggigi you will have options to get shared buses at stalls lining the main streets and Rinjani tours usually include transfers from Kuta or the harbour.

To get to waterfalls and beaches you will have to hire private cars or drive yourself as day trips. So make some friends and split the cost of a car if you can!

There is the option to rent a bike for Lombok travel but be prepared for long drives or places not wanting to let you rent bikes for long drives. You can however rent a bike in Bali and then head over to Lombok on the public ferry (the only way to bring a bike over) and then scoot around.

Lombok Itinerary

Your Lombok itinerary can differ depending on what you’re after on this island but I recommend to spend at least a week on Lombok and its neighbouring Gili Islands but 10 days would be ideal. These itineraries break down where to go in Lombok and for how long but of course it all depends on how much time you want to chill.

Lombok 7 Day Itinerary

  • Gili Islands: Days 1-2
  • Mount Rinjani: Days 3-5
  • Kuta: Days 6-7

Lombok 10 Day Itinerary

  • Gili Islands: Days 1-3
  • Mount Rinjani: Days 4-6
  • Kuta: Days 7-10

Things to do in Lombok

To make things simple I’ve broken down the island into areas to help you plan how much time you want to spend in each area. Keep reading to find out what to do in Lombok for each region.

Things to do in North Lombok (Senaru and Sembulan)

Senaru and Sembulan are both mountain towns at the base of Rinjani. Senaru is the most popular of the two and where most people start their trek up Rinjani, however many tours will also pick up people staying in Sembulan or start the trek from Sembulan which is actually closer to Rinjani.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities | Mount Rinjani

Trek Rinjani

Trekking Rinjani is no easy task and is not for beginner trekkers. Trips up Rinjani can be done is 2-3 days and include trekking for 7-8 hours a day on sometimes lose rock and step points. You start the trek with a 1500m over 8km. I’m not trying to discourage you from trekking Rinjani but just making you aware! I personally skipped it because I didn’t feel that I was fit enough (read: not fit at all) so I chose to do a soft trek, Perigasingan Hill.

Two-day treks will take you to the summit or the crater rim and include a guide and a porter. Three-day treks will take you to the summit, a lake and the hot springs on Rinjani.

Sendang Gile Waterfall

Waterfalls are some of the best Lombok attractions. This towering waterfall is certainly a site and will give you some great Instagram pictures. It is extremely easy to get to from Senaru and it’s right in the main town. Locals will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Locals will be waiting for you to enter and will offer you services as a guide for 150,000 or more. You do not need a guide as there is an obvious path to Sendang Gile. The entrance fee is 10,000 and it covers the cost for both Sengang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

When you visit Lombok you’re going to want to see this waterfall. Tiu Kelep waterfall is a jaw-dropping waterfall that is a moderately easy walk to get to as it is quite accessible. Tiu Kelep is the second of two waterfalls, the first being Sendang Gile waterfall. But Tiu Kelep is even more impressive. There is a second path at the bottom of the stairs. When heading back towards the stairs take the path on the left and you’ll be led to Tiu Kelep.

Kids are hanging around and will offer to be your guides, they ask for about 20,000. Most speak good English and they’ll help you take pictures and walk through the areas when you’ll need to go through water. The water is not deep (below the knees) so getting through is no problem.

For both of these waterfalls avoid going on the weekend, especially Sunday if you can because this is when they are the busiest.

Tiu Teja Waterfall

I personally didn’t visit this waterfall but it is also in the north of Lombok and can be visited on your way to or from Senaru or from Senggigi (which is about 1 hour away). It’s located in the middle of the jungle close to Santong village. You can find more info on how to get there in this article .

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Trek Perigasingan Hill

Since I skipped trekking Rinjani I still wanted to do something active so I opted for this soft trek that takes you up Perigasingan Hill (I call it a mountain) in Sembalun. The trek takes 2-3 hours up and down and is ideal for sunrise so you can see Rinjani as the sun comes up. This hill is where porters train for Rinjani. It can also be done as an overnight trip so you don’t have to trek up in the dark.

I wouldn’t call this trek easy though as at some points it is a 70° climb and there is lose rock, but it is totally doable. I am totally out of shape and managed!

Unfortunately, even though it’s a short trek it is not cheap. I booked through my accommodation in Senaru which included lunch and a transfer from Senaru for 800,000. This was the cheapest price I had found and it was a private tour!

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint

This rice field viewpoint has got to be one of the best I’ve ever seen and is worth checking out on your Lombok trip. The viewpoint is located in Sembalun and can be visited on your way down to Kuta from Senaru. In the distance you can see Perigasingan Hill but if you do the Perigasingan trek you will get views of the same rice fields.

There is a 10,000 rupiah fee and it’s a short 10-minute hike up.

Take a right at the top of the stairs to get to the point with the star. Just behind the star there is a small bridge that is falling apart but gives you views over all of Sembalun.

Things to do in Central Lombok

There is not much to do in central Lombok other than some waterfalls so I don’t recommend staying here but visiting the waterfalls instead as part of your trip down from Senaru or Sembulan or as a day trip from Kuta.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

In central Lombok, Air Berik, is where these two waterfalls are located. There are actually 5 waterfalls but these two are the most impressive (so I’ve been told since I didn’t get to see the others!).

Bengang Stokel is the first waterfall and is down the path to the left just through the entrance. It’s about a 5-minute walk on a path and then you’ll come to this double waterfall that has a perfect area to take pictures without even going into the water.

My personal favourite was Bengan Kelambu waterfall as it was like something from out of a fairytale where the water flowed down in light streams from the lush greenery. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from Benang Stokel and there is a path with stairs up on the right when you start heading back towards the path you came in on.

When you get to the waterfalls locals will usher you into the office where they will then try and charge you 150,000 for a guide or 60,000 to see each waterfall. I haggled and myself and my friend got in without a guide for 50,000 each. Though you may want a guide since I had no idea how to find the other 3 (less impressive) waterfalls were.

These waterfalls are about a 2 hour drive from Kuta so they can be done as a day trip easily. Do not use Google Maps as your navigator (unless you enjoy driving through farmers paths that are just rocks). The correct location for these waterfalls is on Maps.me, an app where you can download an offline map to help you get there.

Things to do in Kuta Lombok

Kuta is where all of the surfers head to catch some epic waves without any crowds. But it’s also a beach lovers paradise and the perfect place to just chill out. Kuta is also where the island’s airport is so Kuta should be your starting or finishing point.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Merges Hill (Sunset Point)

Locals and tourists alike gather on Merges Hill to watch sunset over the hills. It’s the best place to watch sunset in Kuta and can be hiked up in less than 10 minutes. It’s also right beside Tanjung Aan beach so both of these can be done on the same day as it’s a 20-minute drive outside the main town.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Tanjung Aan Beach

This was my personal favourite beach in Kuta because of the calm waters that are a stunning blue shade and because it is more developed. Bamboo lounge chairs dot the shores and there are a number of simple restaurants set up so you can enjoy a cool coconut and some lunch without having to leave the beach.

Because it is more developed there are people and kids trying to sell you sarongs, pineapples and bracelets so be prepared to have them asking you more consistently than is necessary.

The drive to the beach is about 20-minutes from the main town on mostly good roads. The last two roads have plenty of potholes but can still be driven on.

Batu  Puyung Rock Formation

This is an umbrella-shaped rock that is close to Tanjung Aan beach. You can get to this rock for a photo op by boat from the beach or by walking. It will take about an hour to walk over some rocks and rock pools and you may be the only one walking over.

Kuta Beach Lombok is the main beach and is the closest to town. It has nice sand and the waves are small so it’s okay for swimming. There are some food stalls here where you can get drinks and some light snacks. Most locals hangout here and it is the busiest beach in Kuta, though it is never packed like the beaches in Bali. Parking is 10,000.

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Mawun Beach

Mawun beach is a 20-minute drive from the main town but will bring you over hills and past some spots where you’ll want to pull over and take some scenic pictures. It’s a quiet beach and has bamboo lounge chairs and restaurants lining the beach. Swimming is possible but the waves are bigger.

At the moment the driving is not great as there is a lot of construction so the road is covered in gravel and dirt but the roads are improving quickly and it is a paved road already. Parking is 10,000.

Pink beach is about an hour drive away from Kuta and has a few water activities but is generally a quiter area. The beach itself is not very pink but has a definite pink hue to it. You can snorkel here, dive or go island hopping. The water is also crystal clear and is perfect for a swim. There is also a hill on the side and its a great lookout over the beach.

Kuta, Lombok is known as one of  the  surfing destinations in Indonesia. It is not spoiled by a ton of tourists yet like Bali and it is an actual surfers paradise where you can ride waves without all of the crowds.

I won’t pretend that I know how to surf or know the best spots so I recommend further research!

Kuta is turning into a mini Canggu with restaurants and yoga studios already established. So between your beach or surf sessions why not zen out at one of the two studios currently in Kuta. Yoga classes are available for walk-ins with package deals for 3 classes at both Mana Retreat & Yoga and Ashtari Lombok .

I went to 3 classes at Mana and loved the classes and instructors. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the accommodation looked amazing. Ashtari has multiple locations for classes and I saw one of the locations on top of a hill and it has awesome views!

Things to do in Lombok | Lombok island | What to do in Lombok | Lombok attractions | Lombok travel | Lombok trip | Lombok travel guide | Travel Lombok | Places to visit in Lombok | Lombok activities |

Sunset at Ashtari

Ashtari is also a restaurant. It’s perched on top of a hill so you can get good views even if you don’t do a yoga class here. The prices are typical of a western restaurant in Indonesia and is a good spot for sunset (though not as good as Merek Hill). Either way, the food is delicious!

Eat at El Bazar

I don’t usually include where to eat in my guides as things to do but this place was so Insta-worthy that I had to include it. To sit in the best spot of the restaurant, the back terrace, head over during the day as the terrace closes for dinner. Just look at how cute the picture is above! It is pricer but not ridiculous and the food is extra yummy.

Now that you know where you’re going to stay, you need to figure out how to get to Lombok. When you’re there, you’ll want to know how you’re going to get around.

The most popular way to get to Lombok is by public ferry from Bali. We highly recommend this as it’s an activity all on its own!

When it comes to getting around Lombok, we recommend traveling by ojek , these motorbike taxis are cheap and are perfect for individual travelers. If you’re traveling with a group, hiring motorbikes is not a bad idea either, especially if you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling around the island.

Lombok itinerary

Buses are generally the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to your hotel, and they have plenty of space for your luggage.

Taking a bemo is another great way to travel. These are vans with an open back and bench seats along either side. This is how locals travel and is a lot cheaper than many other forms of transport.

You can also hire a car, or just hire a driver, but of course, these are a lot more expensive and in many cases, unnecessary.

Now that you have a better idea of how you’re going to get around the island, you can start looking for the best things to do in Lombok. Let us be your Lombok guide and show you all the activities you simply must add to your Lombok trip itinerary.

Tanjung Aan | Kuta Lombok | Semeti Beach | Selong Belanak Beach

If you’re only spending one day in Lombok, then you need to cram that day full of the very best activities the island has to offer. You’ll spend your first day basking in the sun and exploring many of the best beaches in Lombok. Here are a few epic activities you should be adding to your Lombok itinerary!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Stroll Along Tanjung Aan

  • Why it’s awesome: Tanjung Aan is one of the longest beaches in Lombok and is eerily similar looking to that of the Caribbean!
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Warung Turtle Resto Cafe is just a few minutes walk from Tanjung Aan beach and serves lovely Indonesian food. This beachside cafe has seating right in the sand, making for the perfect island paradise eating spot! Be sure to try one of their seafood dishes, as they’re truly delicious! Enjoy delectable food, while sipping on a thick creamy milkshake, or an ice cold beer. There is no better way to spend the late morning!

While zooming around Kuta on your scooter, be sure to stop at its most popular beach! It stretches for kilometers along the coastline and you might not see another soul! Because Lombok is less crowded than most popular destinations in Bali , you’ll find it a lot more empty, giving you the space to roam freely!

Tanjung Aan, Lombok

Gorgeous turquoise waters will stretch out in front of you, providing you with magnificent views! While strolling the beach, be sure to dip your toes in the deliciously warm waters!

After walking the entire length of the beach, be sure to climb one of the hills on either side. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of the bay! Be sure to take your camera along for this activity, as you’ll want to capture the beauty of this area and remember it forever!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Explore Kuta Lombok

  • Why it’s awesome: Kuta Lombok is a much smaller, and less popular version of the Kuta in Bali.
  • Food nearby: Tomato Cafe is a quaint breakfast joint in the heart of Kuta Lombok. You’ll find tasty Asian cuisine and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options! If you can stomach pizza in the morning, we can highly recommend their breakfast pizza. However, if you’re not up for something so cheesy in the early hours, there are a great deal of other healthier breakfast options.

Kuta is a small village in Lombok with so many hidden gems in its grasp. The best way to explore this wonderful area is to hire a scooter for the day. You can zoom along the coastal road, stopping off at a myriad of different roadside stalls along the way.

Riding a scooter can be a great and inexpensive way of traveling around Lombok. Although you don’t need a license to rent a scooter, most travel insurance companies will ask for a valid motorbike license to be able to claim if you crash! Always make sure that you have travel insurance with a motorcycle-riding coverage.

The area is known for its gorgeous beaches and luscious vegetation, so if you’re a nature lover, you’ll adore this activity!

I have stayed a MANY of the best villas in Kuta Lombok during my multiple visits. My favorites always show off the traditional hospitality of the locals. Villas have high-end service, combining comfort and convenience, along with a promise of fun activities and entertainment. I highly recommend them.

Kuta Lombok

Stop off at various spots that interest you and explore a little further on foot. Top hostels in Lombok have staff with the best recommendations.

Chat with the locals; this is often the best way to get to know an area! Don’t forget to ask for advice about where you can find the most interesting and rare things to do in Lombok.

Insider Tip: Be careful when driving your scooter along the roads. It’s a quiet area, so you won’t encounter traffic, but going slowly is still a safer option, as some of the roads are not of great quality.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Explore Semeti Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: This beach is a little different from the other ones you’ll find around Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Nulle Part Ailleurs is a wonderful restaurant with an island feel. The food is absolutely delicious and the seafood is fresh! Try their incredible chicken teriyaki or their deliciously cheesy pizzas! Neither the food nor the view could disappoint! They also serve great takeaway meals if you’re ready to get back to your hotel.

Semeti Beach is completely different to the other beaches in Lombok ! Instead of white sandy beaches, it has interesting volcanic rock formations that form small rock pools and blowholes.

As you can imagine, the experience you have on this beach is far different from the others. Instead of basking in the sun, you can spend your time exploring the craggy rocks and perhaps taking a dip in one of the many rock pools!

Semeti Beach, Lombok

If you like hopping, climbing, and exploring, this is a great excursion for you! You’ll also get the chance to see a different side to Lombok marine life in the rock pools.

Despite the dramatic scenery, this beach is often not visited by tourists to Lombok. So you’ll find it very quiet, which gives you the perfect chance to explore and investigate as you please!

Day 1 /Stop 4 – Sunbathe at Selong Belanak Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Selong Belanak Beach is located in South Lombok and never gets overcrowded!
  • Food nearby: Mawi Surf Cafe is one of the many street stalls you’ll find along the road. They serve delicious street food at a great price, and also offer surfboard rental . Be sure to try one of their fresh coconuts, and sip it from the comfort of the sandy beach!

Spend the afternoon basking in the sun at this delightful beach! It’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, making it a must-visit during your stay in Lombok.

Many of the beaches in Bali (the neighboring island) are crowded, and there is plenty of litter lying around. You won’t find this to be your experience at Selong Belanak Beach! This beach is a long strip of clean and wonderfully golden sand, perfect for a sunbathing excursion.

Selong Belanak Beach

You’ll also find stalls on the side of the road, just off the beach. Here you can enjoy lovely street food, mainly noodle and rice dishes, as well as deliciously fresh coconuts!

You can rent a surfboard or a sponge board at Selong Belanak, however, the waves aren’t great for experienced surfers. The waves are perfect for beginners, giving them a gentle nudge in the right direction. If you happen to be an experienced surfer, it’s best to save that watersport for another beach.

Senggigi | Sukarara Village | Beleq Village | Tanjung Poki

If you’re wondering what to do in Lombok for 2 days, then you’re going to need a few extra activities to add to your 2-day itinerary in Lombok. On your second day, you’ll be spending time exploring the local villages and getting to know the culture and traditions of the Sasak people . Here are a few extra activities you won’t want to miss out on!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Sunbathe on Senggigi

  • Why it’s awesome: This part of Lombok, reminds us of a much more peaceful time, before all the tourists came to town.
  • Food nearby: Basilico Authentic Italian Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an indulgent mid-morning brunch. They offer an all-inclusive buffet option, or you can order something special off the menu. If you like to dine with an incredible view, this is the perfect place for you.

Of course, basking in the sun is something you should experience every day during your time in Lombok. After all, you are on holiday, it’s your duty to return home with a tan that’ll make the closest of friends jealous!

At Senggigi, you can relax and enjoy the beach that wraps around the coastline! It’s not commercial at all, so you won’t find amenities or street side stalls, but you can enjoy your own company on this gorgeous beach.

Sunbathe on Senggigi, Lombok

The beach gives way to luscious vegetation and palm trees that sway in the wind. We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the last of the morning!

Be sure to take your camera with you , as you’ll struggle to find a more picturesque view if you tried! Turquoise waters and a white sandy beach that gives way to luscious vegetation and a craggy mountain slope!

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village

  • Why it’s awesome: The village lies in a completely overlooked portion of the island and holds hidden secrets many tourists will never find out!
  • Food nearby: Keker Restaurant is a colorful beach boma, that serves absolutely delicious Indonesian cuisine. The quality of every dish is incredible, so you won’t want to miss out on this delight for the taste buds. If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, this is a must-visit during your time in Lombok! The food portions are large, the service is great, and the prices are cheap! The view is also spectacular, there are not many places in the world that you can sit in the jungle eating fresh seafood, it really is a treat!

Many tourists don’t know that Lombok has a thriving textile industry, and Sukarara Village is at the forefront of this industry. In many of the touristy areas you won’t even see a glimpse of this industry, so coming to Sukarara allows you to see Lombok authentically!

They make two main types of woven cloth, Tenun Ikat which is made mainly by the men, and Tenun Songket , which is made by the women. Tenun Songket is inlaid with golden and silver threads. These beautiful pieces of cloth are made by hand and should be absolutely treasured!

Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village, Lombok

Be sure to buy one while you’re in Sukarara, or take a traditional weaving workshop, where you’ll learn exactly how the garments are made.

After taking a class, you’ll realize just how difficult this skill is to learn, and appreciate their work so much more!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Visit Beleq Village

  • Why it’s awesome: If you’re wanting to learn about traditional Sasak culture, you must add this activity to your Lombok itinerary.
  • Food nearby: Pondok Guru Bakti Senaru Cottage and Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant that also offers accommodation. Both are incredible, but if you’re coming for a bite to eat, you’re in for a genuine treat! They have wonderful outdoor seating that provides you with an amazing view of the jungle, and they serve great Indonesian food! Your palate will be nothing less than satisfied by the time you leave!

Beleq is one of Lombok’s many indigenous villages and dates all the way back to the 14th-century. The village has a rich cultural history, as well as plenty of Sasak houses and a village hall. The area is fascinating to explore and makes for a great excursion.

You’ll learn so much on your trip to Beleq Village! You’ll see the ancient traditions of the Sasak people and learn about their history.

Beleq Village, Lombok

The village hasn’t changed much over the years, so it still holds its authentic Sasak ways. There are plenty of tours you can take of the village if you want to learn a bit more, or you can speak to a local. Many of them speak English and would be more than happy to educate you about their way of life.

Visiting Beleq Village is a truly authentic experience that leaves you humbled and in awe. Be sure not to miss out on this truly unique experience!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – See Tanjung Poki

  • Why it’s awesome: Seeing this incredible sight is such a humbling experience! The perfect way to end off your second day in Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Lesehan Terapung Sadewa is a very unique restaurant in the ocean. Yes, I said it, in the ocean. It’s a floating seafood restaurant that is absolutely spectacular. The view could not get better and to be quite honest, neither could the seafood. This is by far the best seafood restaurant in Lombok, and that’s really saying something! For your second night in Lombok, you really need to celebrate by spending the evening at this fantastic restaurant!

The beautiful scenery is not all that Tanjung Poki has to offer. Due to a volcano eruption many years ago, incredible rock formations have formed in this area.

The rough sea has now eroded areas of the rocks away, creating giant blowholes and incredible caves as well as rock pools.

To see how the water interacts with the interesting rock formations is so interesting. You could watch the water for hours! Be sure to take your camera along for this trip, as you’ll want to record the dramatic eruptions of water that take place due to the blowholes in the rocks.

Insider Tip: The best time to visit Tanjung Poki is when it’s high tide. The waves crash against the rocks and water erupts out of the blowhole with brute force! It’s a spectacular sight.

The Beachfront Bungalow Pantain Medas is located on the edge of a farm overlooking the beach.

You’ll also take part in a boat ride across the river, to explore an ancient Hindu Temple, before cycling back to your pick-up spot to head home.

Lombok is relatively safe, however, there are a few dangers you should watch out for during your 2 days in Lombok.

It is advised not to buy alcohol on the island. In Indonesia, alcohol is often diluted with methanol and can be very dangerous! There have been a few deaths caused by this dilution over the past few years! If you want to drink, make sure you buy a sealed bottle and open it yourself. Buying drinks and cocktails at bars in excess is not advised!

There are very strong currents that run between the islands, making it very dangerous to try and swim from one island to another. Although the shallow turquoise waters may be tempting, it is better to stay close to the beach than get washed away!

Drugs are very freely available on the island, due to the lack of police. However, there are VERY strict drug laws in Indonesia, and if you’re found with drugs, you may face the death penalty.

Be aware that petty crime does take place on Lombok island, so keep your belongings safe by making sure your hotel room is locked and the windows shut. It’s also a good idea to carry your most valuable belongings on your person, where you can see or feel them at all times.

Indonesia is a very large country with a very wide territory with thousands of islands on both sides of the equator. Although often classed as part of Southeast Asia, many of the islands are far from the main backpacker routes in Southeast Asia and much of Indonesia is closer to Australia than Thailand, Cambodia or Laos. If you all want to travel to Indonesia, we also have very exciting tourist information, you can see it via the website which we will share here abkhaziya . net

When i was in parts of bali and particularly over toward lombok in gili trawangan, gili air and gili meno, i was constantly woken really early in the morning by the external speakers blasting the prayer. this seemed odd to me given prayer is normally a quiet personal matter. i used to look for concrete buildings distant from noisy places to stay in rather than thatched huts as they are more sound proof and more likely to have air conditioning. i would suggest a rating on each accommodation place indicating how close it is to ferry terminals, nightclubs, temples and main roads for those of us who are light sleepers. recent oppressive laws passed by the blinkered and foolish government of indo (given 80% of their income comes from tourism) do not favour tourism, rather they favour opportunities to extort bribes for not enforcing these ridiculous laws. One can rate the corruption of a police force anywhere by the ratio of how much time they spend looking for or investigating crime and dealing properly with it vs how much time they spend extorting bribes for not doing so. I have lived in places where the latter is all they ever do and they have zero interest in the former! new laws: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-12-06/indonesia-bans-cohabitation-between-unmarried-couples/101739410 i recommend avoiding all the muslim areas of indonesia for both these reasons unless you can get well away from busy areas with temples and police. .

20 Best Things to Do in Lombok

what to see in Lombok

Welcome to Lombok, a small Indonesian island that offers uncrowded white sand beaches with crystal clear water, waterfalls that will leave you breathless, world class surf breaks, unique cultural activities and more adventures than you’re trip could possibly contain!  Lombok has often been likened to nearby neighbor Bali , but at least a decade of development behind, with less traffic, less tourists, but equally incredible natural attractions. As cliche as it sounds, Lombok really does have something for everyone. It’s also super easy to get to Lombok from anywhere in Indonesia.

If you’re a couple looking for a romantic getaway, this region has some of the best beaches you’ll find in Indonesia , with affordable hotels that will sweep you off your feet. Surfers, both beginner, expert and everyone in between, will find the perfect wave down in the south. Culture nuts will love learning about the pottery, weaving and art of the Sasak people. Backpackers will love the laid back vibes of the Gili islands.

And if it’s adventure you’re after, you better buckle up because Lombok has some of the best volcano treks, waterfalls and jungle hikes you’ll find anywhere in the world. Enjoy our list of the best things to do in Lombok, no matter what you’re interested in.

Our trip to Lombok was also more than just an adventure, we had the goal of bringing more tourism back to Lombok. After the 2018 earthquakes, tourism slowed down significantly on the island and the local economy took a huge hit. But we’re happy to say that Lombok is back in business and we wholeheartedly recommend visiting! It was one of our favorite trips we’ve taken recently and we expect that this will be a destination we continue to return to!

Traveling to Lombok

With an international airport, as well as ferry ports, you can travel to Lombok by sea or air. Most people traveling by boat are going from Bali to Lombok, choosing either a slower ferry or quicker fast boat from eastern Bali. When flying there are number of countries that now fly directly into Lombok International Airport in Praya, with AirAsia and Garuda being the best choices. In fact, as we write this, Perth to Lombok direct flights have just started with AirAsia, so this only makes it easy for Australian’s to visit Lombok.

Whether you’re taking the ferry, fast boat or plane, each option offers a different ease of travel, as well as a different price range. Ultimately it’s not difficult or expensive when traveling to Lombok. We went by plane and would absolutely choose this mode of transportation every single time. From Denpasar (Bali) to Praya (Lombok), it’s only a half hour flight and it costs between $30-60 USD round trip. Flying out of Bali domestic airport is a breeze and landing in Lombok airport is fast and efficient.

If you want to go to the Gilis, or you just prefer to go by boat, you can take a fast boat from one of Bali’s harbors. Padangbai in eastern Bali to Bangsal Ferry Terminal in northern Lombok is the most common way to get to to Lombok from Bali. There are a number of companies that offer this trip. The boats also go past the Gilis if you want to stop off along the way, or on your way back.

Adventure Activities: What to Do in Lombok

If you’re an outdoor lover who has been searching for a destination that has world class hiking without the crowds, Lombok is your spot. Whether you’re looking for a chilled out walk through the jungle or you want to get your blood pumping on a multi-day trek, here’s what Lombok activities have to offer:

Hike Mount Rinjani

One of the island’s most famous sights, Mount Rinjani is an active volcano in Northern Lombok. This hike is not for the faint of heart; it’s super challenging. Rinjani rises to 3726 meters and is the second biggest volcano in Indonesia. This hike is bound to test your mental and physical strength, but if you can reach the top the views make it all worth it.

You can also take it at your own speed, with different Mount Rinjani tours taking two, three or four days depending on your skill level and how much time you can allot. Two days/ one night is only recommended for expert level hikers who really only have a short window of time. Three days/ two nights is a common choice and allows you more time to take in your surroundings and enjoy a peek at the Crater Lake. The four day/three night trip is for those that want to take it at a slower pace and enjoy the beauty of Mount Rinjani National Park.

When planning your Mount Rinjani hike one good thing to know is that the volcano is closed every year from January to the end of March due to the rainy season. So if you want to hike it, you”d better plan around that. Even within the hiking season it’s always good to reach out to some trekking companies to check the current status.

Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Hike

If you want a taste of Rinjani, without having to commit to the full experience, you can try the Crater Rim hike. This trek is fine for beginners and also great if you’re short on time because it’s only two days/ one night! With this hike you’ll be able to enjoy sunset and sunrise at the beautiful Crater Lake. Just like hiking Mount Rinjani tours, this will be closed during the rainy season, so you should check with your company before booking.

Senaru Walking Tour

If you’re tired after tackling the mammoth hike of Mount Rinjani, or are just looking for something a little slower paced, we recommend going on a walking tour. We did our Senaru tour with Rinjani Dawn Adventures . It was a half day walking tour with their awesome guide Lasa. We started in the town of Senaru, then walked up a trail through the beautiful green jungle to a coffee plantation.

At the plantation there is a beautiful viewing platform that looks out over the surrounding mountains. From this viewpoint you can catch a glimpse of the nearby Tiu Kelep waterfall. Our walking tour also included a stop at our guide’s house and garden, where he offered us a cup of Lombok coffee and avocados fresh from his tree. After, we visited a local rice field which was bright green as far as we could see.

Hike Pergasingan Hill

Another alternative to Mount Rinjani (or an addition if you’re an avid hiker!), Pergasingan Hill is located in eastern Lombok. Pergasingan can be done in just a few hours, but it’s recommended to go up in the late afternoon and camp on the mountain overnight. You’ll wake up to the sun rising and a terrific view of Mount Rinjani.

Lombok what to see

Waterfalls in Lombok

If you’re planning an adventure in Lombok, you have to visit some of the island’s waterfalls. Not only are they stunning, but they’re often completely crowd-less. Can you imagine, having these beautiful Lombok waterfalls to yourself?

  • Benang Stokel – One of the more popular waterfalls in Lombok, Benang Stokel is located in the center of the island, southwest of Mount Rinjani National Park. After a 15 minute hike from the gate entrance, you’ll find that Benang Stokel is actually two gentle waterfalls right next to each other. They’re not the most powerful falls, but the surrounding area is gorgeous.
  • Benang Kelambu – From the gate entrance of Benang Stokel, you can take a 35-45 minute hike to Benang Kelambu waterfall. If you’re short on time, like we were, you can also have a local guide take you on the back of a motorbike. However you get there, Benang Kelambu is a must! This set of waterfalls are absolutely stunning and one of our all time favorite waterfalls!

where to go in Lombok

  • Tiu Pupus – We don’t hear many people talking about Tiu Pupus, which is strange because it’s a beautiful waterfall! It’s a 5 minute, flat hike along a trail from the carpark, past a small river/lake and on to Pupus, a beautiful single drop fall.

Want even more amazing waterfalls? Check out our detailed guide to the Best Waterfalls in Lombok ! It includes how to get there, opening hours, costs and more!

Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint

If you’re exploring the north of Lombok and heading south, the Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint is a popular stop on your way down. This viewpoint overlooks a rice field that looks like a geometric pattern of shades of green from above. It’s worth coming early to avoid the heat. Come for sunrise if you don’t mind getting up early. Update: As of March 2019 this area has been closed due to the 2018 earthquakes. Check with local tour companies if this has been reopened and we will update our post as soon as we know.

Pusuk Pass Monkey Forest

This is more of a drive than a sight in itself. If you’re heading from Benang Kelambu to Kuta (or vice versa) you’ll most likely drive through the Pusuk Pass Monkey Forest. As you drive on the highway through this dense jungle you’ll start to notice monkeys hanging out on the sides of the road. They often make eye contact with you and turn their heads to continue making eye contact as you drive away.

The monkeys are wild, but they’re clearly accustomed to tourists. You can pull off into a car park where locals will sell you bananas to feed to the monkeys, which are better than normal human food, but we still don’t condone feeding wild animals. This wasn’t cruel, but we didn’t feel like this was a very sustainable activity.

Beaches: Where to Go in Lombok

After spending so much time on Bali island, where the beaches are lacking that white sand and turquoise water combination, we forgot just how gorgeous Indonesian beaches can be! Lombok is a dream destination for beach lovers, and here are a few of our favorites.

Kuta Lombok Beaches in the South

Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with the much more crowded Kuta Bali!) is a cute little surfer town gearing up to the be next Canggu, Bali. It’s a perfect spot to base yourself out of, with plenty of cheap guesthouses, hip cafes and restaurants playing live music in the evening. While the beach in town is so-so, the beaches surrounding Kuta are incredible. Our favorites in the area are Tangjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawi Beach, Semeti Beach and Lansing Beach. Rent a scooter for the day (or week) and explore the region to find plenty of uncrowded spots.

Lombok places to visit

Senggigi Beaches in the West

Senggigi is as close to a resort town as Lombok has. Most of the hotels are located along Raya Senggigi which is a long street that hugs the coast. There’s not much to do in the town itself, but the beaches surrounding this area are gorgeous! We recommend renting a motorbike and driving north on Raya Senggigi to enjoy the views. Our favorites beaches in this area are Sentangi Beach, Ludmila Beach, Nipah Beach and Pandanan Beach. While exploring the beaches, stop by Nipah for a delicious fresh fish lunch from the many beachside vendors.

places to visit in Lombok

Looking for more fun in the sun? We’ve got an even bigger list of the 15 Best Beaches in Lombok ! Come and check it out!

If you really want to find some of the best beaches in Lombok, the Gilis are where it’s at. While there are many gilis around Lombok (gili just means small island in Sasak), there are three Gilis that are the most famous. All three have gorgeous beaches, but very different vibes.

Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is famous for its backpacker party vibes, clubs that pound music till the early morning and easy accessibility to mushroom shakes (yep, those mushrooms!). Gili Air is a chilled out version of Gili T, if you replace the clubs with simple beach bars and spend your evenings sipping cocktails on bean bags at the beach rather than dancing the night away. Gili Meno is the lovers island and the quietest of the three, perfect for honeymooners!

Surfing in Lombok

If you’re looking for surf spots and you’re sick of the crowded waves in Bali, then Lombok has plenty of options. Whether you’re just starting out and need a lesson or you’ve been surfing for years, you’ll find a wave you like on Lombok. Desert Point is one of the most well known around the surfing community. This left hander only works a few times a year, and is definitely an experts only spot, but it’s known as one of the best surfing waves in the world.

If you’re looking for somewhere more beginner speed, Selong Belanak has some great small waves and tons of surf instructors on the beach. There are also some good beginner waves near Gerupuk.

Culture: What to See in Lombok

Even though Lombok is best known for its adventure activities and stunning beaches, the region’s unique local Sasak culture will be fascinating to learn about for any traveler. In between lazy beach days and hiking volcanoes, plan a few local tours to learn more about the history and traditions of Lombok.

Lombok Pottery Center

Lombok is famous for its pottery and if you’re interested in the production, Lombok Pottery Centre is the place to visit. The LPC is a cooperative of over 200 female potters who share the profits of their work, so everyone prospers. They have several tour options available, including a visit to Banyumulek Village, a local village where they create the pottery.

best tours in Lombok

Visitors get to watch the process, from the creation of the clay to the molding of the products, to the outdoor kiln they’ve created. Even if you’re not super into pottery, this is a great opportunity to be invited into a local village and meet with a community. All of the potters we met were so welcoming. Plus you get to visit the LPC office and choose a piece of pottery to get engraved and take home.

Learn about Islam in Mataram

Indonesia is a country of many different religions, but the majority of the islands are muslim. Bali is predominantly Hindu, Lombok is Muslim and the nearby island of Flores is Catholic. If you’re interested in learning more about Islam in Lombok a visit to the Islamic Center Mosque in Mataram is a perfect opportunity. The colors and architecture of the mosque are quite stunning.

After paying an entrance fee, a guide will take you up to the 9th floor and 13th floor where you will get beautiful views overlooking the city below. Remember to dress appropriately. If for some reason you’re turned away (it sounds like this happens on occasion), you can still enjoy the beauty of the mosque from the outside, especially at night when the building is lit up with colorful lights.

things to see in Lombok

Local Village Tour

One of the things that makes Lombok unique is the indigenous Sasak culture. There are several villages that have opened their doors to tourists, where you can see the traditional houses made of bamboo and thatched roofs. Sade Village is a traditional Sasak village that is probably the most touristy of those available to visit. We’ve heard reports of tourists being pushed to purchase souvenirs, but others have enjoyed the ease of being able to visit.

We visited a small Sasak village during our walking tour in Senaru. It was the village of our guide’s famil,y so we felt more comfortable seeing inside the house of his parents rather than a random stranger. Other small villages that have been recommended to us are Desa Beleq and Segentar. We really recommend only visiting these villages with a Sasak guide who can communicate with you. As always when visiting a local village, it’s so important to be respectful, ask before taking any photos and avoid any tours that feel exploitative.

Visit a Weaving Village

Weaving is another craft that Lombok is well known for. Sasak women learn to weave at a young age and the art has been passed down through many generations. According to Sasak tradition, all women must be able to weave or they will not be allowed to get married. There are several villages where you can watch weaving demonstrations, or you may just come across local women weaving while traveling around Lombok.

what to do in Lombok Indonesia

If you’re looking to visit a weaving village you can head to Sukarara Village, where they run weaving tours. You’ll definitely be guided into a gift shop and sold textiles at a mark up, but visiting a village likes this means getting a close up look at the production process and the opportunity to ask questions about the tradition. In Sukarara they also dress you up in traditional costume and let you take photos in front of a traditional Sasak house if that’s your jam. Although it’s a little touristy, your money goes directly back into the community, rather than through a third party tour company.

Narmada Water Park

You won’t find any water slides or log rides here, the Narmada Water Park is actually more of a water temple. Historically, Narmada was used in religious ceremonies at the park’s Hindu temple. Now, it’s a nice place to spend the afternoon, enjoy the gardens and have a sip of the holy water which is said to make you look ten years younger.

Lombok Packing List

LifeStraw water bottle – You should definitely not drink the tap water in Lombok, even in the taps at a luxury hotel (unless they’ve confirmed it’s filtered). After visiting some of the beaches and seeing plastic bottles and cups wash ashore, you’ll feel much better about your choice to bring a reusable bottle. Plus you can fill up at all the waterfalls!

Sarong – Lombok is a Muslim region so you’ll want to keep a sarong on hand in case you need to cover yourself up. You’ll most likely only need to do this while visiting a mosque, a school or a government building. You can also buy one of these from a local weaver.

Hat – Just like Bali, Lombok is hot and sunny! We definitely got a little burnt in the sun here, so we highly recommend a good hat especially for hikes.

SunGod sunnies   – You’ll be grateful you have a pair of these indestructible, polarized sunnies when you’re hiking Rinjani!

A one piece swimsuit – Bikinis aren’t banned here, but I felt more comfortable wearing my one piece in front of the locals. Plus, this one is super cute!

7 Places to Visit in Lombok + Things To Do

7 Places to Visit in Lombok + Things To Do

The vibes in Lombok are equally blissful, although it is less crowded than its smaller but more vibrant neighbor Bali. The two make west Indonesia a haven for travelers with their luscious sights and exciting adventures.

But while Bali is for those who love chasing an active nightlife, Lombok is meant for those inclined for a more relaxed and peaceful vacation. Since it is less touristic, the island draws fewer crowds, keeping some of its beautiful areas untouched. Its main attractions are secluded, dreamy beaches, particularly in The Gilis or The Gili Islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. They are famous for scuba diving, swimming, and other activities. Mount Rinjani is another Lombok highlight you should visit for its magnificence. It’s the second-highest volcano in the country and can be explored through guided tours. Other attractions in Lombok are Sendang Gile Waterfall, Sasak Village Sade, and Senggigi.

Lombok has an airport that serves domestic and international flights from Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.

18 Best Things To Do in St. Petersburg

Updated Feb. 12, 2021

St. Petersburg is a great city for sightseeing, with an abundance of art-filled galleries and brilliant architecture to explore. Stroll along the Nevsky Prospekt and have a coffee at a local cafe, explore north end's sites like the Winter Palace and

  • All Things To Do

top places to visit lombok

Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace

Catherine the Great founded the Hermitage Museum in 1764 as a place to house her private art collection. The main museum complex comprises six buildings, including the Winter Palace, which was the home of the czars for almost 200 years. It finally opened to the public in 1852, and since then has been one of the largest and most interesting museums in the world. It draws more than 4 million visitors each year – in fact, this museum is the main reason some travelers visit St. Petersburg in the first place. Recent travelers offered fulsome praise for both the art on display and the opulent building housing the works. For many, the only downside was the constant crowds.

Bursting at the seams with art from masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso, the Hermitage demands a substantial commitment of time to see even a portion of its collection, which encompasses 3 million works of art and artifacts. Some previous visitors reported spending seven hours touring the grounds. If you plan to spend a considerable amount of time admiring the works, consider purchasing the two-day entrance ticket.

top places to visit lombok

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main attractions in St. Petersburg, drawing crowds to its ornately decorated onion domes and the stunning mosaics housed within. Alexander III commissioned the construction of the church in 1883 as a tribute to his slain father, Alexander II, who was assassinated on this site by a group of revolutionaries. The church's name references this murder and much of the art inside has a martyrdom theme.

Recent visitors invariably raved about the beauty of the building, with the intricate mosaics inside regularly cited as being especially remarkable. Travelers also said the church is small, so you'll probably be able to tour the inside in less than an hour.

top places to visit lombok

St. Isaac's Cathedral St. Isaac's Cathedral

The construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral was ordered by Alexander I in the early 1800s. This neoclassical marvel was finally completed in 1858 after 40 years of construction. St. Isaac's has an interesting history: it survived Nazi shelling in World War II and even briefly served as a museum of atheism under the Soviet regime.

St. Isaac's Cathedral possesses an imposing exterior presence with its single massive dome, but you'll also want to check out its opulent interior, with its multicolored marble floors and stunning frescoes, which never fail to impress visitors.

top places to visit lombok

Peter and Paul Fortress Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress is where St. Petersburg was founded. Peter the Great commissioned the building of a fort on Hare Island in 1703 and initiated construction of the fortress. Among its attractions is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which has a bell tower that remains one of the tallest structures in the city. Along with its impressive height, the cathedral also houses the remains of centuries of Russian czars and their families. The Grand Ducal Burial Chapel, which is connected to the older cathedral, contains the tombs of other members of the Romanov family. At various times, including during the Soviet period, the fortress was used as a prison. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Maxim Gorky, Mikhail Bakunin and Leon Trotsky are among the notables who were held there. Now it operates as part of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. The St. Petersburg Mint also forms part of the fortress.

The fortress exerts a powerful draw for history buffs. Visitors often single out the cathedral as especially impressive. The fortress is a popular destination and can be crowded, especially in summer. Past visitors suggested timing your visit for noon, when the fortress cannon fires a blank shot. The cannon shot was once used to signal the beginning and end of the work day and commemorate special state events, among other things.

top places to visit lombok

Catherine Palace and Park Catherine Palace and Park

Though it's located about 20 miles outside St. Petersburg proper, the Catherine Palace and Park certainly merits a visit by anyone in the area, especially enthusiasts of elaborate and fanciful architecture. In 1717, Peter the Great commissioned a building for his wife, Catherine, who succeeded him after his death, but her namesake palace only began taking on its grand stature in 1743, when their daughter, the Empress Elizabeth, engaged a series of architects to expand upon it. The result was a massive building with ornate blue and white facades decorated with real gold. The interior is no less spectacular. What's more, the surrounding 1,400-acre park features multiple fountains and bridges.

Recent visitors offered lavish praise for the palace's extravagance and the opulence of the furnishings. The Amber Room was a particular highlight for recent visitors. The original Amber Room, which was decorated with six tons of amber and other semiprecious stones, was looted by Nazis during World War II. The whereabouts of the original Amber Room remain a mystery, but in 2003 the palace unveiled a reconstruction of the room – which is what visitors can admire today. The only downside to all this beauty? The palace is known to attract crowds year-round, according to reviewers.

top places to visit lombok

Peterhof Palace & Garden Peterhof Palace & Garden

If you're visiting St. Petersburg in the summer, the Peterhof Palace & Garden is an absolute must-see. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Peterhof was the brainchild and summer palace of Peter the Great. The palace is frequently likened to Versailles , which inspired its design.

While the palace is an impressive site, the manicured gardens and numerous fountains really steal the show, according to recent visitors. Reviewers also add that you shouldn't bother with the palace if you have time constraints, because exploring this palace can easily take an entire day.

top places to visit lombok

Russian Museum Russian Museum

The Russian Museum boasts the world's largest collection of Russian art. Its main exhibition space has been housed in the neoclassical Mikhailovsky Palace since 1895. The Russian Museum also consists of several other buildings, including the Marble Palace, the Mikhailovsky Castle (St. Michael's Castle), the Stroganov Palace and the Benois Wing. For many travelers, a visit here offers the chance to view artwork not often seen outside of Russia.

The complex is massive, so be prepared to spend several hours here, according to past visitors. It's a good idea to figure out what you want to see beforehand, so you can better plan your tour of this fascinating museum. The rooms in the Benois Wing, which hold works by Kandinsky and Malevich, are particularly popular (and often crowded). The museum usually has at least one excellent special exhibit on display. With a massive collection of more than 400,000 works from the 10th to the 21st century, the museum may be best viewed with a tour guide or by using the corresponding free English-language smartphone app , which offers an audio guide.

top places to visit lombok

Fabergé Museum Fabergé Museum

The Fabergé Museum in the Shuvalov Palace houses the world's largest collections of works by Peter Carl Fabergé, including nine of the renowned, bejeweled imperial Easter eggs for which the artist is best known. In addition to the Fabergé pieces, which had originally been collected by the prominent American entrepreneur Malcolm Forbes, the museum boasts a collection of more than 4,000 works of Russian decorative and fine arts. Fabergé, who was born in St. Petersburg, crafted his famous eggs for the last two Russian emperors, Alexander III and Nicholas II. He also made jewelry, religious objects, silverware and other items, examples of which can be seen in his eponymous museum. The 4,700-square-foot palace inside which the museum is located qualifies as a popular destination in its own right.

While the eggs may be the main attraction, visitors frequently are impressed, if not awed, by the quality and quantity of other works of art on display. Many also enthuse about the beauty of the building itself.

top places to visit lombok

Mariinsky Theatre Mariinsky Theatre

Iconic not only for its grand architecture, but also for the legendary performances held here, the Mariinsky Theatre is a must-see for fans of opera and ballet. According to some, seeing a performance here is as essential as paying a visit to the Hermitage Museum to understanding Russian life. Along with the premieres of "Sleeping Beauty," "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake," this theater is where dancers like Anna Pavlova and Mikhail Baryshnikov honed their skills, not to mention opera singers like Feodor Chaliapin. Dating back to 1860, the theater building itself is also an impressive sight thanks to its opulent interiors.

Past visitors highly recommended seeing a performance here while in St. Petersburg. Reviewers gushed about the theater's lavishness and the talent of the performers.

Summer Garden Summer Garden free

After battling the crowds at the Hermitage and taking in countless masterpieces at the Russian Museum , you're going to need a place to unwind. So why not go to the same spot Peter the Great used to go for some rest and relaxation?

Most come to the Summer Garden to just soak in the atmosphere, which travelers describe as tranquil. Classical gardens, Italian statues and lovely fountains will let you know that you made the right call to visit. Other structures housed here include the Summer Palace, which is maintained by the Russian Museum and available for touring for a fee. Because the Summer Palace is modest in comparison to some of the city's other noble structures (it's just two stories and houses seven rooms), many past visitors chose not to tour the interior.

Alexander Park Alexander Park

Located near the Catherine Palace and Park , the nearly 500-acre Alexander Park is less formal than its neighbor. The Alexander Palace, which was a frequent retreat for the last czar, Nicholas II, sits inside the park. Though the palace is currently closed for renovations, there are still several other attractions within the park worth seeing. The park also contains the remains of the Chinese Theatre, an opera house designed by Antonio Rinaldi (who also designed the Chinese Palace still standing in the Oranienbaum State Museum Reserve ), which was destroyed during World War II. A Chinese Village remains, and its restored cottages were made into apartments, and many of the park's adornments have an Asian motif. The park also features miniature versions of some of St. Petersburg's most famous buildings.

The park is often described as peaceful, pleasant and relaxing. Its pathways accommodate walkers, runners and bicyclists (as well as users of wheelchairs). Past travelers said Alexander Park makes for a nice addition to any visit to Catherine Palace, but they also said it's not worth the trip from St. Petersburg if you don't plan to also tour Catherine Palace.

Yusupov Palace Yusupov Palace

Also known as the Moika Palace, Yusupov Palace is a St. Petersburg landmark. It was the main residence of the House of Yusupov, which was a wealthy family of Russian nobles.

Travelers come here to take in the luxurious interior. Those with a deep interest in Russian history find the palace especially fascinating. Others said the palace provided a more convenient option than Peterhof Palace & Garden , which sits about an hour outside St. Petersburg.

Oranienbaum State Museum Reserve Oranienbaum State Museum Reserve

While Menshikov Palace deserves exploration, the palace is part of a larger estate known as the Oranienbaum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area also encompasses the Palace of Peter III and the Chinese Palace, both of which were designed by the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi. The Oranienbaum consists of an Upper Park and a Lower Park. The former features artfully planned canals, ponds and bridges, while the latter was decorated with fountains and sculptures.

Recent visitors praised the impressive gardens adorning the Oranienbaum's grounds and said the palace and its attractions are not as popular as some of St. Petersburg's other royal residences, so the Oranienbaum is much quieter and less crowded. Reviewers were also quick to recommend touring the inside of the Chinese Palace for its opulence.

Grand Maket Russia Grand Maket Russia

Grand Maket Russia, or Grand Model Russia, is a more than 8,600-square-foot scale model of the country that showcases Russia's urban and rural life. With illumination from half a million electric lights, the model reproduces the country's roads, railroads and waterways. The interactive display also has numerous buttons allowing visitors to put various vehicles in motions. To see all of the display's intricacies, visitors can even borrow binoculars.

Recent visitors expressed amazement over the model's high degree of detail. While frequently described as kid-friendly, this is a highly entertaining thing to do for people of all ages, according to reviewers.

Menshikov Palace Menshikov Palace

The Menshikov Palace, the first large structure built with stone in St. Petersburg, was constructed for Prince Alexander Menshikov, a close associate of Peter the Great, in the early 1700s. It was used for formal state functions until Menshikov fell out of favor with the emperor's successor. It currently belongs to the Hermitage and displays some of the museum's paintings and sculptures. The palace, which sits on Vasilyevsky Island on the banks of the Neva River, combines extravagant appointments, including ample use of marble, with everyday domesticity. Its blend of traditional Russian architecture and Western European style became known as Petrine Baroque.

Visitors tend to find the architecture rather fascinating and appreciate the views of the river. Though some pointed out this felt more like a grand house and less like a palace. Others said it's not worth making a special trip to the island. However, the palace is typically not as busy as some of the city's other things to do and may provide a respite from the crowds.
