037 Road

The Lancia 037 was built to compete directly against the Audi Quattro winning the WRC in 1983. A road going version was tested by Clarkson at the Eboladrome and a rally version was featured in It's a gas, gas, gas .

037 Rally

A Tale of Two Lancias: What You Learn Driving a WRC-Champ 037 and a Beta VX Back to Back

As a street car, the Beta VX was tempting. As a rally car, the 037 was unbeatable.

Culture photo

Many years before Volkswagen would make the most out of a 1.8-liter engine, Fiat, Lancia, and Abarth were the trio making big power using supercharged four-cylinders. The extremely light Lancia 037 that Walter Röhrl could pretty much steer with his mind famously became the last rear-drive WRC champion in 1983, powered by a Fiat Twin Cam with a Roots-style system labeled Volumex. Prior to that, the highly-tunable Lampredi DOHC gave Fiat and Abarth three WRC championships pushing the Fiat 131 Abarth sideways in naturally aspirated form.

Before Fiat's dominance, Lancia also won three championships with its Ferrari V6-powered Stratos. In 1981, Fiat launched a 188-unit run of 131 Supermirafiori Volumetrico Abarths. These Italian-market specials were all painted silver grey metallic, featuring a supercharged 2.0 DOHC producing 138 horsepower.

It was this engine that Lancia jammed into a few of its Beta variants, which included the Coupe and the Trevi notchback sedan. The list of front-drive Beta models continued with the normal three-box Sedan, the five-door Berlinetta, the Spider, the three-door wagon HPE, and of course the rear-drive Montecarlo with its transverse mid-engine setup. This eventually made it to America as the Lancia Scorpio.

For the third Beta series, Lancia even added a wild molded dashboard design penned by Mario Bellini.

message-editor%2F1603815029505-2-2-56.jpg

Rumor has it that of the 150 right-hand drive supercharged Lancia Beta VX Coupes supplied to the UK, only nine were tuned further by Stratton, who added a body kit with a rather aggressive rear spoiler, black trim package, and new 15-inch alloys to a car that already cost as much as a rear-drive Alfa Romeo GTV 6. With 138 horsepower on tap, the VX Coupe could reach 60 miles per hour in nine seconds, and keep going until topping out at 124 mph.

The Lancia pros at Hollybrook Sports Cars say only two of these Stratton VX Coupes survive today, with this red one being restored to better-than-new condition.

message-editor%2F1603815117733-img_8176.jpg

Using only the cockpit section of the Montecarlo with custom subframes and the 2.0-liter Volumex engine mounted longitudinally, the Lancia 037 (formally known simply as the Rally) was Lancia's last rear-drive WRC car packing a significantly larger supercharger than the street Lampredi engines. While the Evo 1 and its Weber carburetor setup was a 265-horsepower affair, the fuel-injected Evo 2 produced up to 325 hp in 2.1-liter form.

With its trick suspension and featherweight Kevlar body, the 037 was the most nimble rally car of its era.

message-editor%2F1603814793524-lha122_rally037gruppeb1982_1983d_1024.jpg

How Lancia won against Audi's fire-breathing all-wheel-drive Quattros in 1983 was best explained by The Grand Tour's

Jeremy Clarkson with Mark Higgins behind the wheel of this very Röhrl 037. However, choosing between these two Lancia coupés would be hard today.

Both street-legal, while the 037 is the ultimate thrill as well as investment, a Beta VX Coupe tweaked by Stratton in red is such a rare treat that after jumping into its Recaro seats, one might just decide to keep driving it forever. Front-drive or not, WRC cars are awfully noisy, you know. Still, I may as well just hand it over to Harry Metcalfe, who was lucky enough to enjoy both:

Jeremy Clarkson Has a Bit of a Soft Spot for All Old Lancias

Jason Siu

The latest episode of The Grand Tour features a great movie detailing the epic battle between Audi and Lancia for the 1983 World Rally Championship.

Nowadays, Italian automaker Lancia isn’t very well known, but there was a time when it manufactured the 037, a mid-engine sports car that helped the brand win the manufacturers’ world championship in 1983. But there’s a lot more to the story than just rear-wheel drive vs. all-wheel drive. As Clarkson details in The Grand Tour segment, the 1983 World Rally Championship was a battle of David vs. Goliath with Lancia pulling all sorts of tricks at the races.

SEE ALSO: Meet The Grand Tour’s new Driver, British GT Racer Abbie Eaton

But before Clarkson goes into detail of that race season, he gets behind the wheel of a Lancia 037. And regardless of whether or not you’ve ever heard of the Lancia 037, it’s a great watch. Amazon Prime Video has shared a teaser clip of Clarkson testing the Lancia 037, but you’ll need a subscription to watch the entire episode.

Video of the Day: Jeremy Clarkson Talks about the Lancia 037

This is one segment from The Grand Tour that you shouldn't miss

The Lancia 037 holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of people. It’s one of those models that wasn’t supposed to exist, but homologation requirements obligated Lancia to build a little over 200 road-going models of the 037. The one you see here with Jeremy Clarkson is one of the 207 production 037s that were built. 35 years after it was produced, the Lancia 037 still looks as incredible as it’s always been.

The video of Clarkson’s time behind the wheel of the 037 is short, but if you haven’t seen the full segment, it’s something that you need to watch. Rarely do we get to see the three hosts trade in their skits and crass humor for a compelling and insightful segment that tells a gripping story of a car’s history and impact in the industry. For whatever reason, The Grand Tour adopted this kind of approach in this segment. The result is arguably the best segment of the show’s second season, possibly even its entire run.

Brashness aside, Clarkson is regarded as an authority in the auto industry. Far too often, he doesn’t use that platform to really espouse the real stories behind some of the cars he reviews. This time, he did, and we appreciate him for it. The Lancia 037 has a great story to tell, and for once, we’re pleased that Jeremy Clarkson was the one to tell it.

Jeremy Clarkson Teases Rally Car Showdown between Lancia and Audi

Over the past few weeks, Jeremy Clarkson seemed to have forgotten about having a Drive Tribe community. But just a few days ago, he finally made another post – and this post proved quite interesting.

TGT Season 2: Lancia vs. Audi

Clarkson recently shared the following picture , along with the words “This week, I’m driving a Renault Twingo. Last week was better.”

grand tour lancia 037

The picture shows an Audi Quattro S1 and a Lancia Rally 037 on what appears to be The Grand Tour’s racetrack, the Eboladrome. Are we going to see a showdown between those two great rally cars in TGT’s second season?

It most certainly would be lots of fun to watch those rivals doing a face-off. During the early 1980s, Audi and Lancia battled each other for becoming World Rally Champion. While the Audi Quattro won the WRC as Constructor’s champion in 1982 and 1984, the Lancia Rally 037 beat Audi to it in 1983.

However, what’s so special about the Lancia Rally 037 was the fact that it became the last rally car without all-wheel-drive to ever win the WRC. The Audi quattro on the other hand got its name from its four-wheel-drive.

Overall, for many rally-fans today the Audi quattro and the Lancia Rally 037 are considered to be two of the greatest rally cars ever build. The sound of the quattro-engine counts as legendary and inspires fans on youtube to do tribute-videos like this one:

The Lancia Rally 037 also get’s its way and Lancia-enthusiasts still organize specific Lancia-tribute races:

Therefore, we are sure that many viewers of The Grand Tour would love to see those two great cars driving against each other on the Eboladrome.

Anyway, Jeremy also states that “this week” he is driving a Renault Twingo. Maybe that’s another hint at what’s coming in TGT’s second season? I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Jeremy Clarkson ranting on about how the Twingo is one of the worst cars in history?

What do you think? Do we get to see a face-off between the Lancia and the Audi in November? Let us know in the comments down below.

The Lancia is FAR prettier… but that Audi makes dirty, dirty noises.

THE THIRD ROME

Moscow is the capital of Russian Federation whose age has not still been determined. First references of Moscow relate to 1147. Modern Moscow is in the first ten cities of the world by the population size. 12 197 596 people live in the megapolis. The capital can truly be called a cultural and tourist center. The city has more than 60 museums and 100 theatres. Moscow Public Library is the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world after the Library of Congress in the USA, and Tverskaya street is one of the most expensive shopping streets not only in Russia but also in the whole world.

Grand tour of Moscow, Russia

We present to you the virtual tour, which have been shooting over the most famous sights of Moscow. Also we created a brief summary "Moscow, the best" , which contains 22 panoramas of the most interesting places of the city. For today "Grand tour of Moscow, Russia" is our largest project, it includes 107 panoramas.

As surprising as it may be, but Moscow, one of the most famous cities in the world, attracts only 5 million tourists a year.

Here are some numbers for comparison: Paris sees 29 million tourists a year, Berlin — 10 million tourists a year.

However, the reasons for such low interest in Moscow lies only in technical complexities of organizing the trip to Russia: there are numerous difficulties in getting visa and mysterious Russian weather often frightens sun-loving and demanding travelers. But those who do make it to the capital of Russia don't get disappointed. Moscow is Europe's largest metropolis with unforgettable atmosphere and unique historical monuments that reflect the history of Russia.

According to the legend Moscow is situated on seven hills. The Kremlin, a settlement around which the modern capital of Russia grew, is situated on one of those hills — the Borovitsky Hill. The first mention of Moscow dates back to year 1147, and since then, for almost nine centuries, the city experienced a myriad of events, and it has been destroyed and rebuilt over and over again.

The main attraction of Moscow, the famous Moscow Kremlin, was originally built from wood, but in the 14th century, after being destroyed again, it was rebuilt from a local white stone. It was from that moment on that Moscow was referred to as "Moscow of white stone" ("Moskva belokamennaya"). The walls of the Kremlin were whitewashed long after white stone was replaced with burnt bricks: it was done in the memory of "Moscow of white stone", referring to the glorious part of the city's past.

At the beginning of the 16th century "the seven hills settlement" became the capital of the united Russian state, which gave stimulus to its economic and cultural growth. But while all towers and temples in Moscow were built of stone, the city fire destroyed almost all other old houses in 1812, and Moscow had to be rebuilt all over again.

Burned buildings were replaced with new ones, mostly in classical style: it's those buildings, as well as the modern style ones that were built in the end of the 19th century, that are now comprise what is called "the old Moscow".

Architecture of the Soviet period has also left a great impact on the face of the city. The Shukhov Tower became one of the first notable sights of Moscow: a hyperboloid structure made from steel mesh shell was very innovative and bold for 1920s. Another notable landmark of the last century is the All-Russian Exhibition Center, one of the 50 largest exhibition centers in the world.

And the most famous buildings are the "Stalinist skyscrapers" — seven high-rise buildings built from the late 1940s to early 1950s. Despite the fact that the idea was taken from American skyscrapers, architects were able to create original architectural solutions, which were later called "Stalin's empire style" or "Soviet monumental classicism". Nowadays these high-rise buildings are considered to be the pinnacle of the post-war Soviet Art Deco style and the most important landmarks that end up on every photo of Moscow.

Three of the seven high-rise buildings are located near the famous Garden Ring. It's a circular avenue with circumference of 15.6 kilometers and a width of 70 meters built (paved with asphalt) on top of ancient earth mounds that were used to defend Moscow in the 16th century.

There were more than 130 rivers in Moscow, but now most of them are backfilled. However, the city can offer you very beautiful views of the water: the famous Moskva River, and the smaller Yauza River, Setun River, Shodnya River, Gorodnia River, and many others.

Bridges, just like Moscow's buildings, are unique monuments of Moscow. For example, the Crimean Bridge built in 1938 was the first of the six European bridges that is 168 meters in length. There is also the famous Borodinsky Bridge built to commemorate the Battle of Borodino. Among the most interesting modern bridges is Zhivopisny Bridge in Serebryany Bor, which has no analogues in the world. Its pylon has a form of a huge arch structure spanning from one river bank to the other at acute angle.

In 1990s the Victory Park was opened on Poklonnaya Hill to commemorate the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The park consists of several churches of different denominations, museums, monuments, a huge collection of military equipment, and 1418 fountains (1418 refers to number of days the war continued), which turn dark crimson during the night.

Even the shortest list of all historical landmarks and sights in Moscow will take more than one page. Moscow is a huge metropolitan city spread over an area of 2,500 square kilometers. It has numerous river and parks, narrow streets and big highways, cozy homes in classical style and cold skyscrapers. Each period gave Moscow something new: in 1940s the city was surrounded by a ring road (MKAD), in 1950s the capital saw the opening of the Olympic complex Luzhniki, in 1960s Ostankino TV tower was built in Moscow, in 1990s the largest business center called Moscow-City was built.

Moscow is the case where you just can't describe everything, and as they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words". AirPano team proudly presents panorama of Moscow, the city whose history is inextricably linked with the history of our country, and whose monuments refer to all areas of Russian culture and architecture.

Moscow really is a spectacular, cultured city with charming, hospitable people who are justifiably very proud of their city. My husband and I had the great pleasure of visiting Russia and the Baltic States a couple of years ago. It was an unforgettable experience - we travelled throughout Petersburg, Moscow and around the gorgeous historical cities along The Golden Ring in a private car. Loved every minute of it! By the way, I absolutely LOVE the music you have chosen as a background to this beautiful panorama - it is a lovely piece (even though it has a rather Italian flavour to it).
