Netflix’s A Journey: Is It a Reunion Project or a True Story?
In Netflix’s Filipino drama film, ‘A Journey’, the power of friendship, love, and reunions takes center stage. When Kaye Abad’s character receives a cancer diagnosis, she chooses to forego treatment. Instead, she enlists her husband, portrayed by Paolo Contis, to orchestrate a soul-stirring trip across Tasmania. Along for the emotional ride is her best friend, played by Patrick Garcia, as they set forth on a journey of self-discovery, reflection, and pronounced bonds.
In the trip that follows the three of them revisit old memories and the life that they lived. They shed all their inhibitions, share and reorient their lives in a direction that they want to. Under the direction of RC Delos Reyes, the film underscores the importance of the journey that one takes and the people that they take it with. It attempts to convey the idea that the destination is only a product of the path one chooses and the focus should always be on what comes before it. Given the universal emotion that the film taps into, it is important to scrutinize if any real-life story inspired the film.
Genuine Friendships Make A Journey Real
‘A Journey’ serves as a heartwarming reunion for the main cast members of the beloved TV series ‘Tabing Ilog’, which captivated audiences from March 1999 to October 2003. This hit series showcased some of the Filipino entertainment industry’s most prominent actors and quickly became a favorite among young audiences. ‘Tabing Ilog’ was celebrated for its exploration of friendship and served as a coming-of-age drama, navigating the trials and triumphs of its characters’ journeys through life with humor and charm.
Kaye Abad, Paolo Contis, and Patrick Garcia, who were integral to the success of the series, also play the lead roles in the film, paying homage to their beloved characters from ‘Tabing Ilog’. This has been done in various ways. Firstly, in the film, the three characters are shown to be born and raised in a province where the landmark is a river. In the series, the same river was an important point of reference too. Similarly, the iconic theme song from the series has also been used as the background score for the film’s trailer.
The authenticity of ‘A Journey’ is deeply rooted in the genuine bond shared among the actors during their time working together on the series. This sincere friendship shines through in the film. The chemistry and camaraderie that developed off-screen among the cast members translate seamlessly onto the screen, infusing the film with a heartfelt connection that resonates with audiences. It is this genuine camaraderie that not only enriches the storytelling but also lends an undeniable sense of warmth and sincerity.
In an interview, the actors disclosed that the producer of ‘A Journey’ harbored a deep admiration for ‘Tabing Ilog’ and had long envisioned a reunion project. Upon arriving on set, they experienced an immediate sense of familiarity and camaraderie, as if no time had passed since their days on the series. Grateful for the opportunity to collaborate once again, the actors felt incredibly fortunate to reunite and bring their shared vision to life on screen.
After a four-year hiatus from the screen, Kaye Abad found herself feeling nervous as she returned to acting. While she had enjoyed occasional acting for fun with her husband, this marked her first time back on a professional set. Delving into a full-fledged drama was an entertaining yet daunting prospect for her, but the presence of her friends made the transition smoother. Similarly, Patrick Garcia experienced a sense of restarting as he returned to work on a film set.
While the film may not be based on a true story, it is a true story of the friendship of the people working behind the scenes. A treat for the fans of travel films, for the fans of ‘Tabing Ilog’, and for the fans of heartwarming stories that set the stage for a tearjerker, ‘A Journey’ has everything for everyone. It is a reminder that cherished memories are more precious than anything anyone can acquire in life and it is all that one seeks.

‘A Journey’ Review – A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love
A Journey is a heartwrenching Filipino drama about a woman with cancer setting out to complete her bucket list together with her husband and childhood friend. It’s a beautiful and compelling piece of filmmaking about what truly matters.
I must warn you though, this film will make you very sad.
A Journey opens with cancer survivor Shane, her husband Bryan, and their best friend Kristoff, aka Tupe, celebrating her 39th birthday at a karaoke bar. Kristoff is a famous television actor and Bryan works as his manager while Shane runs a coffee shop. The three have been friends since childhood, while Bryan and Shane have been in love for just as long.
Not long after her birthday, Shane notices some worrying symptoms and goes to her oncologist. The news is devastating, Shane’s cancer has returned. After having suffered through chemo once before, Shane doesn’t want treatment this time. Instead, she wants to spend whatever time she has left getting through her “magic list” with Bryan and Tupe’s help. The list includes some fun items like seeing penguins, going snorkeling, and recreating her first date with Bryan, but also emotionally heavy goals like reconnecting with her estranged father.
A Journey (via Netflix)
A Journey is a heartfelt drama exploring themes of love, friendship, and the things that matter when faced with mortality. It may start with a bad karaoke scene, but this isn’t a feel-good romance where everything is honky dory in the end. The film offers an honest (and depressing) exploration of the often tragic reality of the human condition.
A devastated Bryan seems to accept his wife’s decision and even quits his job to spend time with her. He does, however, have an ulterior motive as he’s hoping Shane will agree to start her cancer treatments once the magic list is complete. Wanting to help, Tupe organizes an all-expenses paid trip to Tasmania for the trio. Shane is apprehensive about allowing her friend to pay for such an expensive trip, but she eventually relents.
A Journey | Image via Netflix
As lighthearted as the trio tries to be during their trip, the finality of their actions is never far from our minds. One compelling scene is where Tupe and Bryan debate whether life is about the journey or the destination. For Tupe, it’s about the destination, but Bryan sees the journey as more important. Shane, however, is acutely aware of how important each moment is and wants to spend her time making the most of it.
The premise of a cancer patient choosing to live to the fullest in their final months has been done before, most notably in the 2007 tearjerker The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. However, a movie doesn’t need to have a never-before-seen synopsis to be good. And that’s precisely what A Journey is. It’s a touching story about three childhood friends finding meaning in their lives in the face of devastating adversity.
I also broke down A Journey’s ending if you wanted some emotional support after that crushing climax. You can also read more about Penguin, Tasmania , where the movie was filmed. And if you’re interested, here are 5 romantic Filipino movies like A Journey you should also check out.

The 20 Most Popular Crime Shows on Netflix
Netflix shows have a massive audience around the world, and one of the most popular genres on the streaming service is crime shows. Whether it’s a hard-boiled story adapted from a well-known book series like “The Lincoln Lawyer” or a new pulse-pounding action concept like “The Night Agent,” it’s clear viewers across the globe love a good procedural.
Some of the biggest shows that Netflix tallied in its data for the second half of 2023 included series from France like “Lupin,” from Germany like “Dear Child” and from Spain like the miniseries “Burning Body.” Even older series remain popular across the globe — especially when they’re one of the top crime-themed TV series ever made, like “Breaking Bad,” which ranked No. 5 on Variety’s list of the best TV shows of all time.
Here are some of the most popular crime-focused series from around the world on Netflix, according to the most recent data on number of views. Note: Some top crime shows which are not available in the U.S. were not included.
“Dear Child” is a six-episode limited series hailing from Germany. Starring Kin Riedele, Naila Schiberth and Sammy Shrein, the mystery drama follows Lena and her two children who live in the captivity of a psychotic kidnapper. When Lena manages to escape with her daughter Hannah, she gets in a near-fatal car accident and is rushed to the hospital. When Lena wakes up, her parents arrive, who have been desperately searching for her for 13 years.
Who is Erin Carter?
“Who is Erin Carter?” is a British action thriller set in Spain starring Evin Ahmad, Sean Teal and Indica Watson. The first season follows school teacher Erin Carter, who moves to Barcelona to work in an international school. Her dangerous past is threatened to be revealed when a robber in a grocery store claims to recognize her.
“Lupin” is a French espionage thriller inspired by the classic “Arsène Lupin” novels by Maurice Leblanc. Starring Omar Sy, Shirine Boutella and Ludvine Sagnier, the action-packed fantastical three-season series follows the adventures of gentleman thief Assane Diop as he seeks vengeance for his father who was wronged by a wealthy family.
The Lincoln Lawyer
American legal drama “The Lincoln Lawyer” started production on its third season in January. Starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell and Becki Newton, the series is based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling hard-boiled mystery novels that follow Los Angeles defense attorney Mickey Haller (Rulfo), who often runs his practice out of the backseats of a 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible and two Lincoln Navigators.
Fun fact: In the novels, the Mickey Haller character is the half-brother of Harry Bosch, subject of Amazon’s popular detective series.
A Nearly Normal Family
“A Nearly Normal Family” is a six-episode limited series hailing from Sweden. Based on the novel of the same name by M.T. Edvardsson, “A Nearly Normal Family” follows married couple Adam (Björn Sandell) and Ulrika Sandell (Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors) who live an idyllic suburban life until their 19-year-old daughter is accused of murder.
The eight-episode series “Bodies” stars Amaka Okafor, Kyle Soller and Shira Haas. It’s set in London’s East End, with filming taking place primarily in Yorkshire. The show revolves around four detectives who are all living in different timelines: 1890, 1941, 2023 and 2053. After they discover the body of a murder victim, their investigations lead them to follow a lifelong conspiracy.
Burning Body
The eight-episode Netflix true crime series “Burning Body” was filmed in 2022 in Barcelona. The show is set in 2017 and is a fictionalized story based on real events of the Guàrdia Urbana, which is the Urban Police. It tells the story of a police officer, Pedro, whose burned body is found in the Foix reservoir, and the love triangle between Pedro and two female officers.
Pact of Silence
Netflix’s thriller “Pact of Silence” stars Adriana Louvier, Marimar Vega and Litzy. The Mexican series follows a popular social media influencer who inserts herself in the lives of four women. She is on a journey to investigate and discover which of them is her real mom who abandoned her at birth and why she did it.
Criminal Code
“Criminal Code” takes place near the border of Brazil and Paraguay. It stars Maeve Jinkings, Rômulo Braga and Thomas Aquino and is directed by Heitor Dhalia and Pedro Morelli. The series is based on a real-life caper and follows the work of federal police officers during an investigation that later unravels into something much more pressing. After tracking DNA evidence, it leads them to a large amount of stolen cash.
The Night Agent
The 10-episode American action thriller series “The Night Agent” stars Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan and Fola Evans-Akingbola. It follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Basso), who works in the basement of the White House tracking phone calls. One night when a mysterious phone call comes in, it leads him to follow a conspiracy full of twists and surprising turns. The pulse-pounding thriller was created by Shawn Ryan and is based on a book of the same name by Matthew Quirk. Season 2 will be released later in 2024.
“Celebrity” is a Korean Netflix thriller series written by Kim Yi-young, directed by Kim Cheol-kyu, and starring Park Gyu-young, Kang Min-hyuk, Lee Chung-ah, Lee Dong-gun and Jun Hyo-seong. It senters around a woman who is fixated on becoming the next big celebrity in Seoul, but it also explores the dark side of social media and being an influencer, including scams, drugs — and even murder.
Black Mirror
“Black Mirror” is a six-season anthology series that was first released in 2011, where every episode is a standalone story. Collectively, the show explores dark aspects of humanity and society, with a futuristic, technological theme that includes stories of drama, political satire and psychological horror. Stars who have been featured in the series include Miley Cyrus, Daniel Kaluuya, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek, Jon Hamm and more.
This Spanish drama follows teens at a fictional private high school in Spain called Las Encinas. Three students enroll in the exclusive school through a scholarship program, and clash with the privileged, uber-wealthy kids at the institution. Lying, secrets and murder are an everyday occurrence for these spoiled teens.
“Money Heist” actors Jaime Lorente, María Pedraza and Miguel Herrán have appeared in the drama, as well as Arón Piper, Ester Expósito and Itzan Escamilla. Danna Paola, Manu Rios and Omar Ayuso also have starred in the show. The first season was released in 2018, and the eighth and final season will be released in 2024. The final season boasts only a few familiar faces, with most of the original cast having left the series in seasons 3 and 4.
Set on a estate in east London, “Top Boy” follows two drug dealers, Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson) and explores drug dealing and gang violence in the city.
Rapper Drake and LeBron James’ business manager and business partner Maverick Carter serve as executive producers on the series. James and Carter co-founded SpringHill Company, which co-produced season 3. The British crime drama ran for two seasons on Channel 4 in the U.K. from 2011-2013 until Drake helped revive the show in 2019.
Blood Coast
Set along the stunning French Riviera, “Blood Coast” follows a rogue police captain and a new recruit who try to find the leader of one of the most infamous drug rings in Marseille. The show is co-written by Kamel Guemra and former police officer Olivier Marchal and directed by Marchal.
The cast includes “Barbarians” actor Jeanne Goursand, Tewfik Jallab, Samir Boitard, Lani Sagoyou, Samir Boitard and more.
Bloodhounds
South Korean action-drama series “Bloodhounds” follows two boxers who, alongside a moneylender, attempt to take down a loan shark to pay off their debt. The series, created by Jason Kim, stars Woo Do-hwan, Lee Sang-yi and Huh Joon-ho.
Sang-yi won the actor excellence award at the Korea Drama Awards last year for his role as Hong Woo-jin, Kim Geon-woo’s (Do-hwan) friend and fellow boxer. The series is based on the eponymous web comic from Jeong Chan. A second season of “Bloodhounds” has been confirmed, though there is no release date set yet.
Money Heist: Berlin
Following the immense success of “Money Heist,” Pedro Alonso (code-named Berlin) sees his own spinoff with “Money Heist: Berlin,” a prequel to the events of the original series. Berlin and his crew work together to pull off another ambitious heist, similar to “Money Heist,” but this time in Paris.
“Money Heist: Berlin” was created by “Money Heist” creator Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato. The original series debut on Spanish TV channel Antena 3 before Netflix acquired the worldwide streaming rights in 2017. The show became one of the most-watched non-English language shows in the streamer’s history.
While “Money Heist: Berlin” is not yet available in the U.S., it is coming soon. Filming for its second season is set to start in 2025.
“Sintonia” follows Nando, Doni and Rita – three childhood friends who live in the same São Paulo favela, an impoverished and crowded area of the Brazilian city. The trio attempts to pursue their dreams amidst the connection between music, drug trafficking and religion.
The series stars Bruna Mascarenhas as Rita, Christian Malheiros as Nando and MC Jottapê as Doni. Filming for the fifth and final season of “Sintonia” began this April.
Breaking Bad
He is the one who knocks. “Breaking Bad” follows Walter White (Brian Cranston), a New Mexico high school chemistry teacher who turns to drug dealing and crime when he’s diagnosed with stage-three lung cancer after his 50th birthday. He bands with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), to cook and distribute methamphetamine to save money for his family before he dies.
Paul and Cranston led the AMC series, created and produced by Vince Gilligan, for five seasons from 2008 until 2013. “Better Call Saul,” a prequel series following White’s corrupt lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) debuted in 2015 and ran until 2022. A sequel film starring Paul, “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” premiered in 2019.
Peaky Blinders
The British period series follows the story of Peaky Blinders, a crime gang in Birmingham, U.K. that operated after World War I. Based on a real youth gang that operated in the city, the star-studded cast includes Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory and Paul Anderson with Sam Neill, Tom Hardy, Paddy Considine, Adrien Brody, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sam Claflin. The six seasons cover the notorious gang as it expands into Britain and abroad and moving into the time of Prohibition and the rise of Nazism.

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.
Kick off summer with two shark movies — one about a shark in Paris (un requin à Paris) and one about sharks circling a crashed airplane! There’s also Richard Linklater’s new romantic comedy, which stars Glen Powell as an undercover cop posing as a hitman who falls for a woman who hires him. And there’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 , for anyone who wants to watch The Strangers , but slightly remixed.
Here’s everything new available to watch this weekend!
New on Netflix
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Genre: Romantic black comedy Run time: 1h 55m Director: Richard Linklater Cast: Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Retta
Glen Powell leads this romantic comedy/crime thriller about a police officer posing as a hitman. While he usually arrests the people who hire him, he ends up persuading a woman who hired him to take a different path, rather than killing her husband... which leads to them becoming romantically entangled. And it’s based on a true story!
From our impressions after seeing it at the New York Film Festival :
Hit Man is somewhere between a rom-com and a police caper, and every second is a breezy joy. The movie is built entirely around Powell’s endless charisma, charm, and comedic chops, and no one else in a 2023 movie has been this much fun to watch. It’s rare these days to get movies that are this completely built around a star, but Hit Man is a perfect reminder of just how great it is when we do.
Under Paris
Genre: Creature-feature horror Run time: 1h 41m Director: Xavier Gens Cast: Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, Anaïs Parello
It’s a movie about a giant shark roaming Paris, from the people who brought us Mayhem! What more do you need?!
New on Hulu
Perfect days.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu
Genre: Drama Run time: 2h 4m Director: Wim Wenders Cast: Koji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano
Japan’s Best International Feature Film entry at the Oscars, Perfect Days follows a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo as he goes about his life. The movie, from legendary director Wim Wenders ( Paris, Texas ) won the Prize of Ecumenical Jury at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Max
Genre: Comedy drama Run time: 1h 26m Director: Tig Notaro Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Flower
Lucy (Dakota Johnson) realizes the reason she can’t find any romantic success with men is because she’s actually a lesbian! Cue a funny coming-out story as Lucy figures out how the heck to start dating women in her 30s.
New on Paramount Plus
Where to watch: Available to stream on Paramount Plus w/ Showtime
Genre: Science fiction thriller Run time: 1h 36m Director: Gabriela Cowperthwaite Cast: Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr.
This sci-fi thriller takes place in the near future aboard the International Space Station. A political conflict breaks out back on Earth, and the U.S. and Russian astronauts receive separate orders to take control of the station.
New on Peacock
Housekeeping for beginners.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Peacock
Genre: Drama Run time: 1h 47m Director: Goran Stolevski Cast: Anamaria Marinca, Alina Serban, Samson Selim
The Macedonian entry for Best International Feature Film at last year’s Academy Awards is about a woman who begins to raise her girlfriend’s two daughters, despite never wanting to be a mother herself. It was the winner of the Queer Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.
New on Mubi
Where to watch: Available to stream on Mubi
Genre: Mystery Run time: 2h 5m Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda Cast: Sakura Andō, Eita Nagayama, Sōya Kurokawa
I cannot speak more highly of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s ( Shoplifters ) Monster . It’s a beguiling thriller about a mother trying to figure out what is going on with her son, who has been acting up recently and got into a conflict at school with his teacher. Kore-eda is an incredibly deliberate filmmaker, with every detail deeply considered, and uses the film’s complicated narrative to unspool one of the best mysteries in years. It’s an absolute gem. — Pete Volk
New on AMC Plus
Where to watch: Available to stream on AMC Plus
Genre: Survival thriller Run time: 1h 30m Director: Claudio Fäh Cast: Sophie McIntosh, Will Attenborough, Jeremias Amoore
Another shark movie! This one takes place in a plane that has crashed and is underwater, a tiny air pocket keeping the surviving passengers alive. Sharks circle the plane, and the remaining passengers must figure out how the hell to proceed. What a nightmare.
New on Metrograph at Home
All the colours of the world are between black and white.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Metrograph at Home
Genre: Romantic drama Run time: 1h 33m Director: Babatunde Apalowo Cast: Tope Tedela, Riyo David, Martha Ehinom
This is a Nigerian film following the budding attraction between two men in Lagos, who cannot express their affections for one another due to societal pressure. All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White is Babatunde Apalowo’s directorial debut, and won the Teddy Award for best LGBTQ-themed feature film.
New to rent
The strangers: chapter 1.
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Genre: Horror Run time: 1h 31m Director: Renny Harlin Cast: Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez
Home invasion horror movies frankly terrify me to another level, but if that’s your thing, you’ll have a great time with The Strangers: Chapter 1 . Especially since it pretty much follows the plot of the original.
Genre: Supernatural horror Run time: 2h 14m Director: Jang Jae-hyun Cast: Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin
The top movie at the Korean box office this year, Exhuma is a beguiling possession movie that follows a ragtag group of exorcists and sorcerers as they try and solve an ancient curse.
Back to Black
Genre: Biographical drama Run time: 2h 2m Director: Sam Taylor-Johnson Cast: Marisa Abela, Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan
Back to Black follows the life of Amy Winehouse, specifically centered around her second album ( Back to Black , hence the title) and her subsequent check-in to rehab. Marisa Abela stars as the iconic singer and rocks her signature beehive updo.
The Old Oak
Genre: Drama Run time: 1h 52m Director: Ken Loach Cast: Dave Turner, Ebla Mari, Claire Rodgerson
A pub owner in Northern England struggles to keep his establishment afloat in a once vibrant mining community. When a group of Syrian refugees come to town, tensions rise — but the pub owner strikes up a friendship with one of the refugees.
