Garhmukteshwar Travel and Tourism Guide

According to myths, here King Shivi, an ancestor of Lord rama, had passed the fourth period of his life as an ascetic and it is said to be the part of the ancient city of Hastinapur (the capital of the Kauravas). The place has acquired its name from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva and is a popular pilgrim centre which attracts lakhs of devotees to have a dip in holy river Ganga. Along with Ganga fair which is celebrated every year in the month of kartik, it is also famous for its 80 sati pillars which mark the spot where Hindu widows committed sati. Tip: Best time to visit - October to March.

About Garhmukteshwar

Located in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, Garhmukteshwar town derived its name from the Mukteshwara Mahadeva. The temple is dedicated to River Ganges. There are four temples entirely dedicated to River Ganges. Two of such temple is located atop a high cliff and other two at the laps of the mountain. Apart from this temple, you can come across nearly 80 Sati Pillars. These Sati pillars indicate the spot at where the widows end their life by burning along with the dead body of their husbands. A 12 th century old mosque which was built by Gays- ud-din Balban is also situated in Garhmukteshwara.

Ganga Temple-  The Ganga Temple is one of the ancient temples in India. Almost 101 steps, extending down to the Ganga River, are one of the attracting features of the temple.  Presently, there are 85 steps out of 101 steps present today. The beauty of the temple is enhanced by the amazing sights of River Ganga and white stone idol of Lord Brahma.

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple-  This ancient temple is devoted to Lord Shiva, and the temple is one of the must visit attractions in the city. The temple was built by King Shivi and there is a Shiva lingam inside the temple, which is said to be built by sage Parshuram

Nahush Koop (Nakka Kuan)-  Yajna was performed here by King Nahush. The water in the well is from the Ganga River. The well and the water of the well is considered sacred.

Meerabai ki Reti-  Meerabai ki Reti is one of the sought-after tourist attractions, located opposite to the Mukteshwar Temple. Legends say that Meerabai used to stay at this sandy stretch and offer prayers.

Kalpavriksha-  Kalpavriksha is the holy tree, renowned as the ‘Tree of Heaven’. The tree was planted by Vijaypal Baghel at the Vedant Mandir. The tree is said to fulfill the wishes of the visitors. Along with this, the tree is also considered pious and contemplates the religious, spiritual, environmental and medicinal significance. The tree is one of the rare species of holy floras.
