Breaker High is a teen comedy-drama series that ran from 1997 to 1998, airing on YTV in Canada and on UPN's weekday "Kids" block in the United States. The series was created by Cori Stern, while David Winning directed the pilot and seven episodes of the series.  See more on Wikipedia

The series is set at a high school located on a  cruise ship  (equivalent to the real  Semester at Sea  program), allowing the episodes to be set in different exotic locations, although the series was, in fact, filmed entirely in  Burnaby ,  British Columbia . [5]  Like most series of its kind, it featured events such as dating, finances, and friendship, although as a daytime series, it tended to steer away from the "tougher" situations (pregnancy, sexuality, etc.) outlined in other primetime teen dramas at the time.

14 Binge-Worthy TV Shows Set on Cruise Ships

cruise ship show ryan gosling

One of my favorite family vacations to this day will always be the 3-day cruise we took from Singapore to Malaysia on the SuperStar Virgo. Even though it was some 20 years ago, I still remember the excitement I felt walking up the grand staircase that wrapped around the Christmas tree, running down the carpeted hallways to find our room and the awe I felt at just how huge the entire ship looked from the outside.

My tiny, eight-year-old brain had a hard time processing how something so big could stay afloat, but I had no worries that it wouldn’t. It was, without a doubt, a memorable experience and one that I’d like to have again as an adult. I definitely recommend going on a cruise at least once in your life!

But if you can’t do it in person, how about doing it via your TV screen?

This is why we put together a comprehensive list of scripted TV shows set on cruise ships for all you sea lovers to get the travel bug somewhat out of your system.

So put on your best cruise outfit, grab that poolside cocktail, and settle down onto your couch to binge these TV shows about cruise ships!

The Good Ship Murder, Channel 5 (2023 – present)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

We’ll begin this countdown with the newest show on it – Channel 5’s whodunit The Good Ship Murder .

This murder mystery series centers on former detective Jack Grayling, now a charismatic cruise ship singer working on a luxury Mediterranean cruise, who finds his past resurfacing when a string of murders rocks the idyllic voyage.

Forced to use his honed detective skills, Jack teams up with the ship’s strong-willed First Officer, Kate Woods, to solve the murders.

Together, they navigate exotic Mediterranean locales while unraveling the tangled motives and hidden secrets of passengers and crew alike.

Wreck, BBC Three (2022 – present)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Another newer show on this list is BBC Three’s horror-comedy Wreck .

This genre-bending series follows Jamie Walsh, a nineteen-year-old who takes a job on a board cruise ship called The Sacramentum to figure out what happened to his sister, who went missing from the same ship three months ago.

But paradise quickly turns deadly as a series of grisly murders begin to plague the ship.

So, Jamie learns the ins and outs of living and working on a ship and befriends other crew members in hopes that it will help him investigate his sister’s disappearance and how the recent attacks on crew member could be connected to it.

The Love Boat, ABC (1977 – 1986)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

The Love Boat is a scripted rom-com/drama series that aired on ABC more than 30 years ago! However, when watching this series, you’ll find that a lot of the scenarios portrayed still feel very current.

Based on the original made-for-TV movie of the same name, which in turn was based on the non-fiction book Love Boats written by Jeraldine Saunders, a real-life passenger cruise ship director, the show takes place on board the MS Pacific Princess, a luxury passenger cruise ship.

Captain Merrill Stubing is at the helm, guiding not only the ship himself but also his crew members as they attempt to deal with a new passenger’s antics in each episode.

These crew members included the cruise directors, photographer, purser, bartender, doctor, and eventually, even a troupe of dancers!

Love Boat: The Next Wave, UPN (1998 – 1999)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Speaking of The Love Boat , in 1998, UPN came out of a reboot of the classic series.

This time around, we follow Captain Jim Kennedy, a divorced Navy officer, as he steers the luxurious Sun Princess on Caribbean adventures.

Join him on the cruise ship are his teenage son Danny and a crew of quirky characters as they navigate exotic ports and witness blossoming love stories unfold amongst the passengers each week.

Featuring familiar faces from the original Love Boat alongside many new guest stars, Love Boat: The Next Wave is a must-watch for all those who loved the original series!

The Gale Storm Show, CBS/ABC (1956 – 1960)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Next, we’re looking at the oldest show on this countdown – The Gale Storm Show .

This 1956 black-and-white sitcom stars Gale Storm as Susanna “Susan” Kingston, the quick-witted social director aboard the luxury liner SS Ocean Queen.

During the show’s four seasons, we follow Susan and her scatterbrained best friend Ethel “Nugey” Porter’s hilarious misadventures abroad on the ship, kept in check by the ship’s ever-grumpy Captain, James “Jim” Bates.

Each episode brings new laughs as Susan tackles the chaos of passenger demands, quirky crewmates, and her own romantic entanglements.

The Suite Life on Deck, Disney Channel (2008 – 2011)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

For a more light-hearted take on a cruise ship series, we have Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck .

A spin-off of the Disney original series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody , this show sees twins Zack and Cody Martin trade their posh hotel life for the luxurious cruise liner SS Tipton, owned by their classmate London Tipton’s father.

London, used to a life of luxury, must now share a cramped cabin with Bailey Pickett, a down-to-earth girl from Kansas.

While Mr. Moseby, the uptight manager from their old hotel, joins the crew, keeping a watchful eye on the mischievous twins.

Breaker High, YTV (1997 – 1998)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Speaking of teenagers on a cruise ship, there also is a one-season Canadian series, Breaker High .

This unique series takes place at the Pacific Coast Academy, which ditches the traditional classroom for the decks of a luxurious cruise ship, allowing students to explore exotic ports while tackling real-life challenges.

Join a vibrant cast including brooding heartthrob Sean (played by young Ryan Gosling!), practical joker Jimmy, tomboyish Cassidy, and overachiever Denise as they navigate friendships, first loves, and the pressures of high school – all under the watchful eye of the student activities counselor Tony Gifford and the ship’s captain/the school principal Captain Ballard.

High Seas, Netflix (2019 – 2020)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

High Seas , also known as Alta Mar in its original Spanish, is a Netflix original series that aired for three seasons beginning in 2019.

Unlike the modern cruise ship settings that we’ve seen so far, High Seas takes place on a luxury ocean liner in the 1940s !

As it voyages from Spain to Brazil, sisters Eva and Carolina Villanueva climb aboard the Barbara de Braganza liner. Unbeknownst to the other passengers and crew, they’ve smuggled a mysterious woman onboard after she pleaded for their help.

Things go terribly awry when the woman is thrown overboard, and Eva, a curious and headstrong writer, launches an investigation into the mysterious goings-on on the ship.

Eventually, both she and her sister discover shocking secrets that tie into their family’s dark past. Who are they supposed to believe?

Anchored, Telecinco (2015)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Another Spanish series set on a cruise ship is the 2015 sitcom Anchored (or Anclados in its original Spanish).

This short-lived Spanish series takes place on a budget cruise ship called the Estrella del Mar (Star of the Sea).

So, we follow the ship’s quirky crew, led by the ever-optimistic Captain Paloma and the perpetually grumpy Cruise Director Mariano, as they struggle to keep the ship afloat – both literally and metaphorically.

Join them alongside a wacky cast of passengers, from social media-obsessed millennials to eccentric retirees, as they navigate hilarious mishaps, stormy weather (both literal and emotional), and all-inclusive chaos.

The Dream Ship, ZDF (1981 – 2005)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

From Spanish, we will jump to German in this next series.

The Dream Ship (or Das Traumschiff in its original German) is a long-running German drama that whisks viewers away on luxurious cruises to exotic locations around the globe.

Each episode features heartwarming stories of the passengers taking the cruise – blossoming romances, rekindled friendships, and even family reconciliations – all played out against the backdrop of paradise.

Captains and crews change throughout the series, but the focus on feel-good stories and stunning locales remains constant.

Titanic, ITV (2012)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

While not exactly a cruise ship, Titanic is probably the most well-known ship on the planet, so I think we would be remiss if we didn’t mention a TV show about this passenger liner.

Written by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster, this series weaves a fictional tapestry of stories against the backdrop of the historical tragedy.

We follow the ship’s passengers from all walks of life – ambitious first-class socialites, hopeful Irish immigrants, and hardworking stokers – as they embark on the RMS Titanic’s maiden voyage.

1899, Netflix (2022)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

And if we’re mentioning 2012’s Titanic , then we also have to tell you about Netflix’s short-lived series 1899 .

This multilingual sci-fi thriller follows a group of European immigrants sailing westward on the steamship Kerberos. However, their dreams of a new life in America are shattered when they encounter another vessel adrift on the open sea – the Prometheus.

A sinister puzzle unfolds as passengers from both ships, each harboring dark secrets, are inexplicably linked. Mysterious symbols, cryptic messages, and unsettling occurrences plague the journey, raising questions about reality itself.

You Are My Destiny (2020)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

The last non-English language series we’ll mention is the Cheese drama You Are My Destiny .

Based on the 2008 Taiwanese drama called Fated to Love You , the series is set on board a cruise ship bound for the Bahamas.

There we meet a mousy administrative assistant, Chen Jia Xin, and a charming heir to a large toiletries conglomerate, Wang Xi Yi.

After a chance encounter, the two find themselves unexpectedly drawn together. Will they become each other’s destiny despite their differences?

Avenue 5, HBO (2020 – 2022)

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Finally, science fiction and dark comedy collide in this last entry – HBO’s Avenue 5.

This series brings cruise ships to a place you never could have imagined: space . Yup, you read that right!

While setting off on an eight-week-long cruise, the interplanetary cruise ship Avenue 5 experiences technical difficulties that set off a devastating chain of events: a temporary loss of gravity and the Chief Engineer’s accidental death, causing the ship to veer off-course.

When it’s estimated to take three years for them to return to Earth, Captain Clark and his crew need to figure out how to keep their passengers calm, collected, and safe – even as mishaps are happening left and right.

Will they ever be able to make it back home?

WOW! Ryan Gosling speaks fluent Russian! Or we dialed the wrong number for his interview

cruise ship show ryan gosling

Social Sharing

LONDON, ON— When it comes to our greatest stars, the only thing we can expect is that they will always continue to surprise us.

Or else that their representative just didn't give us their proper contact information and so we spoke to a different person. That, too, is always possible.

We were stunned when, during a recent phone interview with Ryan Gosling to promote his new film Blade Runner 2049 , the actor displayed a stunning fluency in the Russian language that he has never before revealed to the press. Perhaps the star of the cruise ship high school sitcom Breaker High was doing far more studying in his spare time than his prankster character Sean Hanlon did on the show!

Either that, or it was not Ryan Gosling that we reached via long-distance call and to whom we spoke for what can only be described as a very uncomfortable eight minutes.

But with Hollywood, you never know!

  • CELEBRITIES Nation's motorcycle-driving middle-aged bachelors grapple with George Clooney 'betrayal'
  • GREAT HERA! Hollywood announces fake all-male 'Wonderman' remake to soothe threatened men
  • HOMECOMING Neil deGrasse Tyson lurks outside theatres to tell audiences there's no such thing as 'Spider-Men'

One thing that suggests we definitely may have been speaking to the Ontario-born actor was the number of times he said the very name "Ryan Gosling." He was saying it almost constantly, in fact. That does seem like the type of thing you would say if you were confirming that you were, indeed, Ryan Gosling.

However, it's also the thing you would say if you were vehemently denying that you were Ryan Gosling.

What a chameleon!

Also, he was saying it with an implied question mark at the end, and it was sandwiched in between words that did not sound English at all, and which, even after inquiring about a translation with our news outlet's foreign bureau, we cannot transcribe here, as I do not have the proper characters on my MacBook keyboard. So it seems like he was definitely speaking Russian, or a language like it—not something we would put past the brainy thespian!

We would put it past a Russian native who was not Ryan Gosling even less, though.

The star of such varied projects as Half Nelson (2006), Lars and the Real Girl (2007), and La La Land (2016) has clearly found time to keep his Russian language skills sharp, whenever he originally learned them, which is amazing with a career as busy as his in a non-stop industry. Unless it is a different man to whom we spoke, one whose amount of free time we cannot confirm, though he's probably not in movies. Most people aren't.

On a personal note, this reporter cannot fully express my amazement at the man's talents, nor my full uncertainty regarding whether I was talking to the right guy.

In fact, ordinarily I would not share personal information about a celebrity subject, but… +7 499 677-39-29 … is that a Hollywood number? Maybe Vancouver? It does not feel like a Vancouver number, though I know they "do things differently" out west.

Also the ring was more like a honking than a ringing, and I spoke to three different people before Mr. Gosling, all of whom displayed the same facility with Russian. What is going on in Hollywood these days?!

In conclusion, we thank Mr. Gosling for his time, and encourage you all to see Blade Runner 2049 when it is released in theatres around the world October 6, 2017.

(This is information that I obtained by Googling; Mr. Gosling did not speak about the film, having done what I can only describe as a "yelling laugh" when I mentioned it. Perhaps he remembered the original. Anyway I assume the film will also be released in Russia.)

Ryan Gosling Headshot

Birth Name: Ryan Thomas Gosling

Birth date: november 12, 1980, age: 43 years old, birth place: london, ontario, canada, spouses: eva mendes, partners: rachel mcadams , sandra bullock.

IMDB

Before becoming one of the most bankable romantic leads of his generation, Ryan Gosling established himself with misfit outsider roles in award-winning independent films like "The Believer" (2001), "Half Nelson" (2006) and "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007), with a believability that could only come from someone who had struggled with unease and dissatisfaction in their own life. Perhaps his awkward professional start in ill-suited endeavors like a stint as a cast member on the "Mickey Mouse Club" (Disney Channel, 1988-1995) and the short-lived fantasy series "Young Hercules" (Fox, 1998-99) also provided fodder for the disaffected roles the young actor would later craft with such voracity.

Turns in higher-profile romantic dramas such as "The Notebook" (2004), combined with much publicized relationships with co-stars like Rachel McAdams brought Gosling a certain amount of heartthrob celebrity, although the actor doggedly avoided the "Hollywood Star" persona. After a brief absence from the screen in the late 2000s, Gosling reappeared at decade's end with two hard to classify performances - first, in the fact-based murder mystery "All Good Things" (2010), then in the romantic drama "Blue Valentine" (2010), the latter of which was a small, independent labor of love that earned him critical raves. With his stoic performance as an unnamed antihero in the neo-noir "Drive" (2011), Gosling had firmly established himself as one Hollywood's most interesting and unpredictable rising actors.

Moving with ease from moody dramas like "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2012) and the knockabout comedy of '70s-set action flick "The Nice Guys" (2016) to the old-school Hollywood glamour of romantic musical "La La Land" (2016) and gritty, philosophical science fiction with "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), Ryan Gosling seemingly could do anything and do it brilliantly.

Ryan Gosling was born on Nov. 12, 1980, in London, Ontario. He seemed to be at odds with his surroundings from the very beginning, and somehow got the idea in his head that being an entertainer would be an easy ticket out of his working class mill city. Gosling had some success doing dance routines on a local talent TV show, but offstage, had trouble with academics and socializing in school. In fact, after a particularly grisly fight on school grounds, he left to be home schooled instead.

In 1992, he brought his dance moves to an audition for the Disney Channel's revival of "The Mickey Mouse Club" (1989-1994), winning a spot alongside future singing stars Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. The untrained entertainer's talents proved to be limited alongside the cast of hardcore "child performers," so Gosling found himself relegated to a lot of peripheral roles as a back-up dancer.

Gosling persevered, moving to Los Angeles on his own when he was 16 years old. He immediately landed work, delivering a well received turn as a British foundling in an episode of "The Road to Avonlea" (CBC, 1990-96; aired in America on Disney Channel), which brought him a Gemini Award nomination. In 1997, Gosling was tapped to play the smooth-talking hypochondriac Sean Hanlon in "Breaker High" (USA Network, 1997-98), a series about a high school set on a cruise ship. His goofy charm and blond, vulnerable looks earned him teen pin-up status, which was further enhanced by his casting as "Young Hercules" (Fox, 1998-99), a sort of prequel to the popular series starring Kevin Sorbo. Gosling was fairly devastated when the show was cancelled and even considered getting out of acting, in light of his bad programming luck, but he returned from the show's set in New Zealand to L.A., where his personal and professional breakthroughs were right around the corner.

Gosling made the transition to the big screen with a small role in the football drama, "Remember the Titans" (2000), but it was an offer from independent director Henry Bean to star in "The Believer" (2001) that made Gosling finally recognize his potential. Through playing an articulate and intelligent young Jewish teen who becomes involved with a neo-Nazi group, Gosling understood the power of acting for both the actor and the audience - how it was a tool to explore human nature and try to understand life. He had never been asked to work with material of this depth, and his innate grasp of conflicted human emotions helped the film pick up the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. He took on the role of another conflicted teen who forms an emotional bond with his football coach in "The Slaughter Rule" (2002), which was roundly praised by critics for avoiding the pitfalls of sports film clichés, as well as for its captivating performance by Gosling. He was lured into big budget territory with a promisingly dark story about a murderous teen trying to outwit an FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) in "Murder by Numbers" (2002). Gosling next delivered an adroit turn as the autistic Leland in the indie "The United States of Leland" (2004), before landing his breakout mainstream role playing the romantic lead opposite Rachel McAdams in Nick Cassavetes' emotional "The Notebook" (2004). Cast against type after Cassavetes saw "The Believer" and thought the actor had unexplored depths, Gosling delivered a warm and charming performance buoyed by a heartbreaking depression that elevated his status among the actors of his generation. Next came Marc Forster's ambitious psychological thriller "Stay" (2005), about a shrink (Ewan McGregor) whose suicidal patient (Gosling) somehow begins invading his dreams and blurring the lines of their realities and individualities. That same year, Gosling traveled to the battle-torn Darfur region of Uganda and began writing a film about the tragedy of child soldiers. He was also a spokesperson for Invisible Children, an organization seeking to improve conditions for Ugandan children of war. He even addressed the State Department about the need for a U.S. presence and facilitation of a peace process in Darfur.

With "Half Nelson" (2006), it was announced to the entire Oscar-following world that Gosling was a serious contender. He gave a stellar performance as an idealistic and inspirational inner-city teacher who engages in an after school drug habit which is discovered by a troubled student (Shareeka Epps), leading to an unexpected friendship that threatens to either undo them both or bring about the change they both desperately need. Gosling again countered his character's dark side with a believable charm that made the character unexpectedly sympathetic - enough that he was recognized with a Best Male Breakthrough Performance award from the National Board of Review and one for Best Male Lead from the Independent Spirit Awards. In an almost unheard of Hollywood occurrence, the little-known independent actor found himself nominated for a Best Actor Oscar nomination alongside box office heavy-hitters Leonardo DiCaprio, Peter O'Toole, Will Smith and Forest Whitaker.

Hot off his Academy Award nomination, Gosling matched wits with acclaimed actor Anthony Hopkins in the well-reviewed courtroom thriller, "Fracture" (2007). He returned to independent film to take on another societal misfit in "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007), playing a small town introvert who begins to break out of his shell with the help of a life-like female doll he orders off the Internet. The offbeat comedy earned rave reviews and again Gosling was hailed as among the best up-and-coming actors of his generation; enough that his oddball performance garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

Around this time, Gosling dropped out of the public eye for a time before resurfacing in the romantic mystery "All Good Things" (2010), co-starring Kirsten Dunst. Troubled relationships appeared to be a running theme for Gosling, when that same year he starred opposite Michelle Williams in the romantic drama "Blue Valentine" (2010). In the intimate tale of love and loss, Gosling and Williams portrayed a young couple charting the course of their once idyllic - now unbearably painful - relationship over the years. The small independent film received strong critical praise, and earned Gosling a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama that year.

Gosling had a banner year in 2011 with three widely divergent roles that earned him widespread critical acclaim and greatly increased his audience appeal. He had his first comedic turn opposite Steve Carell and Julianne Moore in Glenn Ficarra's romantic comedy-drama, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" (2011), playing a womanizer who meets his match in a young woman (Emma Stone) who refuses his advances. He next starred in the indie neo-noir, "Drive" (2011), a crime thriller in which he played an anonymous stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver and runs afoul of a pair of mobsters (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman) after falling for a married woman (Carey Mulligan). The film was hailed by critics and earned Gosling some of the highest marks of his career, which led to some serious Oscar buzz and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actor. Meanwhile, he delivered another fine turn as a campaign manager for a Democratic candidate for president (George Clooney) in the political thriller "The Ides of March" (2011). The role earned Gosling more award recognition, this time in the form of a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a motion picture drama.

From there, Gosling had a relatively quiet 2012, but returned the following year with a starring role in "Gangster Squad" (2013), a period crime drama set in 1940s Los Angeles. Gosling played a reluctant LAPD officer recruited by a headstrong cop (Josh Brolin) to take part in a guerilla-style war against Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) and his thugs. A few months later, Gosling reunited with "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance for "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2013), where he played a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks in order to support his new family, only end up on a collision course with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper). Gosling next starred in "Only God Forgives" (2013) working again with Refn for another hard-hitting and moody thriller, this time set in Thailand. The movie proved to be very divisive and only reinforced Gosling's tendencies towards following his own muse-or the muse of an intriguingly eccentric filmmaker. Fittingly enough, around this time, he joined the cast of a typically secretive Terrence Malick production, eventually released as "Song To Song" (2017), and also undertook his own debut as a director and screenwriter, "Lost River" (2014), with Mendes, Christina Hendricks and British actor Matt Smith joining the cast. A lead role in Adam McKay's comedy-drama about the 2008 financial meltdown, "The Big Short" (2015), was followed by Shane Black's good-natured '70s throwback "The Nice Guys" (2016), an action comedy pairing Gosling's hapless private detective with Russell Crowe's hired muscle on the case of a porn star's mysterious death. Gosling next reteamed with Emma Stone for the third time in Damien Chazelle's melancholy musical romance "La La Land" (2016). Drawing on his own background as a pianist to play idealistic jazz musician Sebastian Wilder, Gosling did his own playing, singing and dancing for the film, a box office success that scored 14 Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actor nod for Gosling. Gosling next appeared in Denis Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), a sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 original that pitted Gosling alongside that film's star Harrison Ford. The film was released to enthusiastic reviews in October 2017.

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling

Filmography

Life events, family & companions.

Long before Ryan Gosling gave us the "Kenergy" in Barbie , the Oscar-nominated actor from Ontario was a Mouseketeer and a Canadian TV sensation.

Before the 2024 Oscars, where we'll see Gosling perform "I'm Just Ken" and possibly win his first Oscar, let's take a walk down memory lane with some of the actor's notable, and maybe even forgotten, roles in the 1990s and 2000s.

From charming and goofy characters, to being a brooding lead in more dramatic films, Gosling has been in a wide range of projects, some of which (we think) deserve more attention than they get.

The Mickey Mouse Club (1993-1994)

Back in 1993, a young Gosling was a Mouseketeer on Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club, with legendary costars including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez.

In fact, Gosling and Timberlake actually lived together when Timberlake's mother was Gosling's guardian he while working in the U.S.

Breaker High (1997-1998)

Following The Mickey Mouse Club, Gosling went on to appear in episodes of '90s Canadian-filmed shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? , Goosebumps, Ready or Not and Flash Forward, but then was one of the stars of the series Breaker High, as Sean Hanlon.

For those of you who may have forgotten about one of our favourite '90s hits (which aired on YTV in Canada and UPN in the U.S.), or maybe you're too young to have watched them on TV at the time, the concept of Breaker High is centred around a group of teens who go to school on a cruise ship.

We're not exactly sure all these cruise routes we saw in each episode really make sense geographically, and in reality, these teen would probably be dealing with far more cruise-related illnesses than we saw on the show, but we absolutely adored the series.

A core part of Gosling's storyline was that Sean, often a bit of a goof ball with his friend Jimmy (Tyler Labine), had a significant will they-won't they arc with Rachel Wilson's character, Tamira.

If you were like us in the '90s, you begged your parents to let you stay up past your bedtime to watch Breaker High , with particular interest in finding out the latest evolution in Sean and Tamira's relationship.

The show had a bit of spike in interest in 2019, when Drake was spotted at a Toronto Raptors game wearing a Breaker High hoodie , which excited nostalgic Canadians.

Young Hercules (1998-1999)

Then we get to the part of Gosling's career that we do hear about a bit more, with Young Hercules, a TV series that aired from 1998 to 1999, more of an adventure tale for the actor, but with a comedic twist.

It's a role that peaked the interest of his Barbie costar, Margot Robbie.

"I'm a huge Xena and Hercules fan, and Ryan was young Hercules, and the world needs to know that," Robbie said in an interview with the Nerdist . "And the world also needs to Google this right now."

It came up again in an interview the pair did with W Magazine, where Robbie said it's her "favourite" thing he's ever done.

Remember the Titans (2000)

Still one of the most infamous movies from the 2000s, Gosling worked alongside Denzel Washington in the football film Remember the Titans, again, playing a character with a lovingly goofy personality.

For a little extra nostalgia, the film also features Kate Bosworth, Wood Harris, who ended up on The Wire and Empire, Scrubs and Clueless star Donald Faison, a very young Hayden Panettiere, and Ethan Suplee, who played fan favourite Boy Meets World character Frankie Stechino.

The Believer (2001)

Quite a departure from a project like Breaker High came a particularly disturbing role for Gosling in The Believer , which won the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize in 2001.

Gosling plays Daniel Balint in the film, a Jewish man who is also a neo-Nazi, which he doesn't want to reveal to his gang of skinhead fascists.

That short summary is enough to understand how unsettling the movie is, but critics have c ontinued to praise Gosling in his performance of this horrifying and thought-provoking project.

The United States of Leland (2003)

When most people think about Gosling and Michelle Williams together they will think of the 2010 movie Blue Valentine , but they actually worked together years earlier for the 2003 movie The United States of Leland , with a star-studded cast that also includes Don Cheadle, Kevin Spacey, Chris Klein,   Lena Olin, Sherilyn Fenn, Michael Peña and Kerry Washington.

Gosling plays Leland, who ends up in a juvenile detention centre after he kills his ex-girlfriend's brother, Ryan.

The writer and director, Matthew Ryan Hoge, has gotten some criticism about the depiction of Ryan as autistic, which he defended in a Los Angeles Times   piece in 2004.

The Notebook (2004)

Now we've reached one of the most notable films Gosling has ever done, The Notebook , with costar and now ex-girlfriend, fellow Canadian actor Rachel McAdams.

This movie, and Gosling and McAdams together, was so iconic. They quickly became one of the most beloved couples, and actors, of the 2000s and beyond.

And of course, who can forget their infamous kiss during the MTV Movie Awards, winning in the Best Kiss award, with the camera cutting to Lindsay Lohan's mouth agape, and Hilary Duff laughing and clapping. That may be the most iconic 2000s mix of people you can get.

Half Nelson (2006)

Gosling received his first Academy Award nomination for the 2006 movie Half Nelson , bringing his mother and sister to the ceremony.

Directed and co-written by Ryan Fleck, who went on to direct episodes of Billions and Masters of the Air , and co-directed the Marvel film Captain Marvel , Gosling plays Dan Dunne in Half Nelson, a middle-school teacher with a crack addiction.

One of his students at the Brooklyn school, Drey (Shareeka Epps), catches him doing drugs, she's terrified at what she's seen her teacher do, but it sets the pair off for an interesting friendship.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

We'll end this walk down memory lane with maybe the oddest movie Gosling has ever done, Lars and the Real Girl , directed by Craig Gillespie ( I, Tonya, Dumb Money ).

Gosling plays Lars Lindstrom, who starts dating someone he met on the internet, but it's a plastic doll, Bianca.

Even though the premise seems completely ridiculous, watching this back in 2007 we couldn't help but kind of fall in love with this story about loneliness. And a lot of that does really hinge on Gosling's performance.

From there, moving into the 2010s and beyond, Gosling's career continued to take off in dramas like Blue Valentine (2010) , Drive (2011), The Ides of March (2011), The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) and First Man (2018), along with comedies like Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) and The Nice Guys (2016). He also starred the musical La La Land (2016).

While we wait to see if Gosling could take home his first Oscar for Barbie , and we continue to get excited about his performance at the ceremony, all of his fans, and Canadians in particular, can't get enough of our Ontario-raised celeb.

Gosling and Day appeared at Tuesday’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles as the characters Beavis and Butt-Head, according to The Associated Press.

Gosling and Day first made their appearance as the live-action characters on “Saturday Night Live” on April 13, Variety reported. Gosling wore a blue shirt that said “Death Rock” on it as Day wore a gray one that said “Skull,” according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Beavis and Butt-Head are animated characters, the AP reported. They are both known for their antics, their laughs and their form of humor. The characters were a fixture in the 1990s on MTV.

“The Fall Guy” also stars Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Stephanie Hsu, Winston Duke, Teresa Palmar and Hannah Waddingham, Variety reported. It’s an action-comedy. Gosling’s character is a stuntman who goes looking for a movie star that is missing, and it happens that he is that movie star’s stunt double.

Playing the Pretty Boy: Ryan Gosling, Jacob Elordi, and More Redefine the Himbo

By Rebecca Ford

Jacob Elordi in Saltburn Sterling K. Brown in American Fiction Joaquin Phoenix in Napoleon Ryan Gosling in Barbie

Amateur etymologists—or professional ones who’ve run out of fancier words to dig into—may be interested to learn that the noun himbo entered the English language 36 years ago, thanks to Rita Kempley of The Washington Post. “Their chest measurements rival Dolly Parton’s,” she wrote. “Their brains would embarrass a squid. They…do nude scenes and are wildly popular with both girls and boys. They come in two varieties—greased and armed to the teeth or moussed and undressed-to-die-for.” The former category included Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the latter Richard Gere, Tom Selleck, and—remember, this was the ’80s—Gary Hart. In the years since, himbos have thrived and proliferated. That’s partly because, while the word bimbo is universally understood to be pejorative, men can generally find a way to take anything as a compliment.

In fairness, later waves of himbos have more going on for them than their forebears did, including endearing qualities that transformed them, despite their flaws, into one of the more likable male archetypes out there. Think about how dear to our hearts the following non-deep thinkers are: the lovable smoothy Joey from Friends, the molten stripper known as Magic Mike, even Thor from the Marvel movies with his biceps and hammer. There’s so little stigma attached to playing a dim or dim-adjacent male character that some of our most resourceful actors have recently done variations on the theme, and there are now himbos in the Oscar race.

The most gloriously unreconstituted new member of the species, of course, is Ryan Gosling’s gorgeous, bleach-blond Ken in Greta Gerwig’s sly smash Barbie . Ken must have felt the old gym-tan-laundry way of life from The Jersey Shore sounded like too much of a headache, because his job is famously just “beach.” Gosling has displayed all kinds of range as an actor in the past, but often it’s been in dramas like Drive and First Man. He plays Ken with a wink and skip in his step, and the freedom makes him very funny. The role even allowed the actor—who tends to keep the media at arm’s length—to turn the Barbie press tour into a kind of performance art. “I just decided I was going to Ken as hard as I can,” he said. “I Kenned in the morning; I Kenned at night. If I’m honest, I’m Kenning a little right now.”

When he’s not actively beaching, Ken primps and pines for Barbie’s attention. Gerwig has said that her vision for the character was inspired by Stallone, lest you think the classics have been forgotten. She wasn’t talking about Sly’s machine guns but about the other accessories that he and his characters favored. If this doesn’t ring a bell, take a moment and google the phrase Stallone in fur. “When I think of adorned men, I think he’s probably the best one,” Gerwig has said. “And I feel like Ken was nothing if not a man in search of adornment.”

There’s an entirely different himbo in Yorgos Lanthimos’s opulently oddball coming-of-age story, Poor Things. Duncan Wedderburn is a smooth lawyer played by hulking talent Mark Ruffalo . After falling for a captivating undead ingenue named Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), he whisks her away from her sheltered London home for a sexcapade across Europe. When they land on a cruise ship, another man who’s competing for her attention writes Duncan off with a sneer—“he’s a pretty moron”—but Duncan has a much higher opinion of himself.

Duncan is indeed a superficial, ego-driven lothario, and he delivers delicious lines with a pretentious, conspicuously unplaceable European accent: “You’ve just been thrice fucked by the very best. It’s probable no other man will bring you to the raptures I have.” Screenwriter Tony McNamara says he initially wrote the character as a two-dimensional caricature. “He’s a cad. Women fall in love with him, he sleeps with them, and then he goes on to someone else,” he says. But when Bella—who’s grown up without the limitations that society usually puts on a woman—makes clear that she doesn’t care all that much about Duncan, Ruffalo really brings the character to life and becomes the funniest part of this off-kilter dramedy.

The character works so well in part because even when he’s frantically trying to hold on to Bella, Duncan is never an evil entity. “He doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body,” says McNamara, adding that the secret to success was “casting this cad with probably the nicest human alive” in Ruffalo, who’s known for playing solid good guys as in Spotlight and even the Avengers movies. The result is a handsome, horny, ultimately insecure dum-dum. Duncan’s job, to put it in terms that Ken would understand, is basically just “bed.”

And Napoleon’s job? You would think it’d just be “invade.” But in Ridley Scott’s new movie , Joaquin Phoenix pulls off the most surprising himbo in recent memory. Yes, a biopic about the war genius who conquered most of Europe doesn’t seem like the most likely place to find a relatable idiot, but this Napoleon is a dopey mess when it comes to his first wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). Short of stature and big of hat, Napoleon’s inability to hold it together in front of his true love makes for some unexpectedly funny moments in an otherwise traditional movie with a lot of cannons. The couple’s warm, playful chemistry turns into a lifelong loyalty, even after Napoleon has to divorce Josephine because she can’t give him an heir.

Jacob Elordi’s Saltburn character, Felix , is a more beautiful specimen, if that’s what you’re into, and the slow-burn reveal that his character is a himbo makes him fascinating to behold. Felix is a privileged, popular Oxford student who takes awkward outcast Oliver (Barry Keoghan) under his wing and invites him to his family’s lavish country estate. Writer-director Emerald Fennell cast Elordi, a breakout star in Euphoria, when she noticed that in his audition he was examining the fact that Felix was born into privilege and gorgeousness but doesn’t exactly have a lot going on under the hood. “The thing about someone like Felix is he’s incredibly sexy and glamorous and cool, but he is kind of not any of those things either,” says Fennell. “He’s lucky, and he’s sort of weak.” When some plot twists jeopardize Felix, we sympathize with him because the lovely dolt was only trying to help a down-and-out classmate—and because Elordi shows us all his vulnerability. “He’s born with an immense amount of privilege, but he’s not born with this swagger and strut—you have to kind of develop that and learn that,” Elordi says of Felix. “A lot of the time, when you meet people that have that kind of sensibility, it usually comes from a place of great insecurity or misunderstanding of their place in the world.”

On paper, none of these himbos should be likable. Regardless of where they rank on the vapidity scale, they’re often just getting in the way of the main characters. Ken allows his mojo to run amok in his dojo. Duncan becomes increasingly pathetic as he clings to Bella. Napoleon leads his army to a savage victory but turns into a bumbling, grunting weirdo whenever Josephine enters the frame. And in American Fiction, Sterling K. Brown , playing the chiseled surgeon brother to Jeffrey Wright’s novelist, shows up when it’s most convenient for him—when he wants to have a pool party in his family’s summer house, for example—and usually makes more of a mess of things. Yet because of their insecurities, we want to care for these men like we would an injured golden retriever.

Unlike their muscle-bound forebears from the ’80s, the current generation of himbo characters are rarely malicious, and—give or take a French emperor—the power never lies with them. There’s an innocence that’s endearing, especially to women dealing with toxic masculinity on a day-to-day basis in the real world. There’s no real threat with a himbo. They’re all beauty and no bite.

What HAS happened to Ryan Gosling's face? From Tom Cruise to Zac Efron, CAROLINE BULLOCK says too many Hollywood hunks now look more chipmunk than chiseled!

He's hung up Ken's Stetson but Ryan Gosling 's apparent passion for plastic might extend beyond playing Barbie's boyfriend.

With a waxy shine and seemingly inflated cheeks, 43-year-old Gosling is causing something of a stir among disconcerted fans on social media.

Has he been primping and pumping, some wonder. He looks more like Amy Schumer than the fine-featured leading man we all adore, others say.

And while it's not known if he's turned to the usual arsenal of injectables in an attempt to turn back the clock, he's certainly not the only male A-lister whose looking rather more chipmunk than chiseled of late.

Indeed, as a coterie of Hollywood heartthrobs reach a certain age, it seems that tucks and tweakments are no longer just the preserve of our favourite female stars.

Far too many big-screen boys are now united in the mistaken belief that padded and puffed equates to youthful bloom.

As a result, needless enhancements tend to render our superstars pale imitations of their formerly exquisite selves, sucking out the character and charm from their rugged good looks.

What ever happened to the golden generation of movie men who stayed hot while gracefully growing craggier and more grizzled?

Steve McQueen, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Richard Gere – a collective appeal undimmed by a creased forehead and hooded eyes.

In fact, as gravitas and weathered grit replaced boyish charm, many just get better and better as the years ticked by.

Would Steve McQueen have stayed an icon if every fine line from fast-living and chain-smoking had been erased with a swollen pillow face?

What about Harrison Ford in his 1980s peak? Imagine his eyes frozen and alarmed instead of sultry and knowing.

Today's artistes are staying tight (and fuller) lipped on exactly what they have done and that's leading to endless unwelcome scrutiny.

61-year-old Tom Cruise, still at the top of his game and doing his own stunts, is a case in point.

Blame it on his own self-imposed time warp churning out another Mission Impossible or resurrecting his 1986 smash Top Gun, but rumored efforts to preserve his boyish looks may have led to drastic measures.

At a 2021 basketball game in San Fransisco, the actor's face looked to be more pumped-up than any of the action on court.

Some suggest the apparent swelling could have been an allergic reaction. Others wondered about lockdown weight gain.

And for for a man with access to the world's best practitioners and personal trainers, it felt safe to say the bum-look hadn't been intentional.

Then there's James Bond star Daniel Craig whose most recent outing in the film franchise, No Time to Die, revealed he had no time for jowls.

Famed for bringing some much-needed masculinity to the Bond role, a pre-publicity trail makeover appeared to have given the 56-year-old a bad bout of facial rigor mortis.

Though it's all small fry compared to Zac Efron's jaw-gate saga.

The High School Musical star – just 36 years old – blamed a collision with a granite fountain at his home for the new face that popped up in 2022. Truly, such a mishap could only afflict the rich and famous of La La Land.

Some may be inclined to put a progressive spin on today's crop of more primped male stars.

Hollywood's men are finally facing the same pressures over ageing as their female counterparts. Wage equality must be just around the corner!

Brad Pitt's lifted contours have been subject to repeated rumors for good reason. Sporting a jawline as sharp as when he was modeling Levi jeans in his twenties, the 60-year-old appears to have no plans to relinquish to his looks.

Plus, there are growing concerns over the age gaps in on-screen relationships – the older man and much younger women dynamic served up as the norm for decades is now more troublesome in a post-MeToo era.

But, whatever these chaps are doing, it's just not a good look.

Aligning oneself with the vapid vanity of the time-rich juvederm junkies who plague our social media feeds is something that seems a little beneath a major Hollywood player.

Of course, some ageless male stars are setting the bar high.

As for Mr Gosling, he almost won an Oscar for his rousing song 'I'm just Ken' in the Barbie movie – a macho celebration of the world's most famous male doll.

Following his recent appearances, however, I fear life is in danger of imitating art.

Ryan Gosling's Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie Will Break His Recent Trend & Provide One Important Reminder

  • Switching from comedy to drama, Ryan Gosling's role in Project Hail Mary will showcase his versatility as an actor.
  • Gosling's charisma may not be enough for this serious role, as he navigates inner turmoil and space-related problems.
  • Project Hail Mary will remind audiences of Gosling's roots in dramatic films and highlight his skills beyond just comedic roles.

Although Ryan Gosling has stolen the spotlight recently with comedic roles such as Ken in Barbie and Colt in The Fall Guy, the actor's next role isn't very funny, and this change in pace may end up being great. Over the course of his career, Ryan Gosling's movies have varied in genre. From the wry humor of Crazy, Stupid Love and the romantic musicality of La La Land, to the intense worldbuilding of Blade Runner 2049 and the dark action of Drive, Gosling has proven his acting chops again and again, and this time won't be much different.

If Ryan Gosling's best films have taught audiences anything, it is that Gosling oozes charisma. In Barbie, Ken is often oblivious and, at times, cruel, but he still manages to be a fan-favorite character. A big part of this is Gosling's ability to land a joke and create a dynamic character. The same goes for The Fall Guy. Though his character, Colt, can often appear vulnerable or reckless, it is impossible to dislike him because Gosling simply has too much charm . Now, whether this trait can help him in a drama is up for debate.

The Fall Guy Ending Explained

The Fall Guy ends with a bang. With such an exciting conclusion to the story, we break down the action comedy's ending, sequel plans & major cameos.

Project Hail Mary Will Be Different From Ryan Gosling's Recent Comedy Roles

Ryland is a more dramatic role than a funny one.

Although Ryan Gosling has been bringing down the house recently with his comedic roles, his newest part in Project Hail Mary will be quite different. Project Hail Mary is a film adaptation of the science fiction book of the same name by Andy Weir, who previously penned The Martian. The story follows a man named Ryland Grace who wakes from a coma to find himself on a spaceship with no memories . Ryland must figure out his identity, but more importantly, his mission, which could make or break the survival of the earth.

In this leading role, Gosling will definitely go through some inner turmoil and external, space-related problems.

In this leading role, Gosling will definitely go through some inner turmoil and external, space-related problems. Based on the premise alone, it is clear that Project Hail Mary will not have the same easy humor as Barbie or The Fall Guy. Of course, that isn't to say that Project Hail Mary will have no humor. Notably, The Martian had its moments of levity. However, the point is, Ryan Gosling's new role cannot be sustained by charm or humor alone .

Project Hail Mary Can Be A Reminder Of How Good A Dramatic Actor Ryan Gosling Is

Gosling can return to his dramatic roots.

Though Gosling has been deep in comedies recently, his more mature career as an adult really took off in dramas like The Notebook and Blue Valentine. In this way, Project Hail Mary can remind viewers that, as much as Gosling aces comedy, he is just as good at drama . If anything, Project Hail Mary will show, yet again, just how versatile Ryan Gosling can be. Hopefully, he can bring yet another amazing performance.

Project Hail Mary is slated for release in 2026.

Ryan Gosling told Ncuti Gatwa that Doctor Who is 'the coolest show in the world'

Gosling informed his Barbie co-star that he's "the biggest fan" of the time travel show.

Senior Writer

Plenty of people thought the casting of Ncuti Gatwa as the new star of Doctor Who was a great decision on the part of showrunner Russell T. Davies . Among them? Ryan Gosling .

The Drive actor was shooting Barbie with Gatwa in May of last year when the BBC announced that the Sex Education actor was set to play the two-hearted time traveler on the British sci-fi show. "I remember Ryan Gosling bounding up to my trailer like, ' Doctor Who is the coolest show in the world man! I'm the biggest fan,'" says Gatwa in a new interview with British Vogue . "And I was like, 'What the hell?' This show has incredible reach."

Gosling does seem to be a genuine fan of both Gatwa and Doctor Who , which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Last June, the actor was photographed wearing a Doctor Who t-shirt featuring Gatwa as the show's titular Time Lord, prompting Davies to joke on Instagram about suing the actor for wearing "illegal merch."

The next month, Gosling appeared on the U.K.'s The One Show and praised Gatwa: "I am such a big fan of Ncuti's, he's the coolest and him playing Doctor Who is like, the most exciting thing that's happening right now." (Of course, if Gosling is that big a fan he should know that Gatwa is playing the Doctor, not Doctor Who, but we're prepared to give him a pass this once.)

Gatwa believed he had little chance of being cast as the Doctor when he auditioned. "I was just like, 'There's no way I'll get this,'" he told Vogue . "'It's a British institution and there's no way they'll cast a Black man.' So, I just had fun."

Gatwa also discussed the struggle of keeping his casting a secret before it was announced. "I'd often get a little tipsy in Soho House, make a new best friend in the bathroom, tell them and run off," he says. "Thankfully, it never got out."

The actor previously talked about the difficulties of keeping the news a secret on the day his casting was announced. "I've known since about February this year, so it's been tricky trying keep this under wraps, because I've got a very big mouth," Gatwa told the BBC . "It feels amazing, it feels really amazing. It's a true honor, this role is an institution, and is so iconic, and it means a lot to so many people including myself, and so it means everyone feels seen as well, so that everyone can enjoy it. So I feel very grateful to have had the baton handed over and I'm going to try to do my best."

Doctor Who will return in November with a trio of 60th anniversary special episodes starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate. After that, Tennant and Tate will hand off to Gatwa and costar Millie Gibson . Gatwa's first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will air over the Christmas holiday season.

SNL Season 49 Bloopers: The Cast (and Ryan Gosling) Can't Stop Making Each Other Laugh

The cast couldn't help but break while making sketches like "Papyrus 2" and "Explore Page."

From the fall of 2023 to the spring of 2024,  Saturday Night Live Season 49 delivered plenty of laughs. From " Washington's Dream ," to Host Kristen Wiig afraid of getting " Jumanji-ed " and  Mikey Day and Ryan Gosling dressing up as Beavis and Butt-Head , there were standout sketches from this season that have already become instant classics.

How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live  Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on  NBC and next day on  Peacock .

Now, the show's treated fans to  SNL bloopers and outtakes from Season 49. the cast struggles to keep a straight face while filming various pretaped digital shorts for the show.

The compilation mostly features the regular cast of the series, including Sarah Sherman trying to play like a tennis legend in " UNTOLD: Battle of the Sexes " or Martin Herlihy trying to keep a straight face as he delivers the line, "A donkey kicked him in the nuts so hard he flew into the Grand Canyon" from the " Gone Too Soon " sketch with Sydney Sweeney. Even longtime cast member Kenan Thompson can't keep it together when faced with Heidi Gardner 's fake gasps.

But one Host does get a fair bit of screen time in the blooper reel: Ryan Gosling . His Beavis already had his co-stars cracking up during the live show, and that was also the case while filming the digital shorts.

Ryan Gosling can't stop laughing in these hilarious SNL Season 49 bloopers

In the cut-for-time " Papyrus 2 " sketch from Gosling's most recent SNL hosting gig on April 13, Gosling is sitting in a dentist chair when he sees Avatar: The Way of Water for the first time. As he realizes the title font was (somewhat) altered for the blockbuster sequel, he says, "They changed it," as he's got dentist hands in his mouth.

But in the behind-the-scenes bloopers, Gosling and Mikey Day, who plays the dentist, can't stop from cracking up in the moment.

"Sorry, I got through so much of it," says Day, breaking character, after Gosling repeatedly tries to deliver his line.

The bloopers are already hysterical for Season 49, so we can only imagine what the outtakes will look like for next year's historic 50th season.
