From Broome to Cape Leveque The Dampier Peninsula

The trip from Broome to  Cape Leveque  traverses the whole Dampier Peninsula north of Broome.

Most people drive straight through to Kooljaman Resort .

However, Kooljaman is not the only place worth stopping at...

Dampier Peninsula coastline

The whole Dampier Peninsula is still an untouched wilderness, surrounded by an amazing coastline and untainted by the usual mass tourism ventures. Instead there are several Aboriginal communities that welcome interested visitors and offer accommodation, cultural tours, fishing and a glimpse into their traditional lifestyle.

They are happy to share their knowledge about bush foods and medicines, traditional hunting and fishing techniques and their special relationship with their land and the ocean.

Getting from Broome to Cape Leveque/Kooljaman

Sandy track at Cape Leveque

The distance from Broome to Cape Leveque—the tip of the Dampier Peninsula—is 206 km .

The second part of this drive has been sealed for quite a few years now, the first part is in the process of being sealed. (Work on that started in May 2018 and is expected to take 3-4 years.) The currently remaining unsealed part as well as all the side tracks are as sandy and corrugated as ever . Which means that you still need a 4WD to make the trip, even if you do not plan to visit any of the places on the way.

The drive from Broome to Cape Leveque takes about two and a half to three hours . The turn-off to the Cape Leveque Road is only a few kilometres out of Broome and the unsealed section can be very corrugated. Once you reach the Aboriginal owned country further north the sealed roads are excellent.

You will be travelling across Aboriginal land . Respect the culture and privacy of the people that live here. That means observe the no entry signs on private roads! They protect law grounds, burial sites and other areas of traditional significance.

If you don't have a car and don't want to rent one  you can join a Cape Leveque tour  from Broome.

Cape Leveque also has a small airport and you can get there via  a scenic flight from Broome or Derby . Many operators offer packages for day and overnight trips.

Places To Visit Between Broome And Kooljaman

If you are self driving and have some time then you can visit some more places.

Beagle Bay is the first Aboriginal community that you will pass. There is no accommodation here but it's worth to call in to have a look at the famous Sacred Heart Church and its beautiful altar decorated with mother-of-pearl shell.

Beagle Bay's Sacred Heart Church altar

Middle Lagoon is a quiet holiday resort popular with locals. Great fishing, a shallow lagoon safe for swimming, camping, beach shelters, breezy self contained log cabins... It's a gorgeous place. Some travellers even prefer it over Kooljaman.

Middle Lagoon

Lombadina is another well known Aboriginal community further north. This was the first community on the peninsula to venture into tourism, over 15 years ago now. Their acommodation and tours are well established and their beach may be the most stunning on the whole peninsula.

"The Aboriginal community at Lombadina has the most beautiful bay/beach I have ever seen. I think it may have the name Thomas Bay. It is definitely a must visit if you are in the area."    -- Reader Jane from Sydney

Beach at Lombadina

The photo below shows their church, an ingenious structure built from bush timbers and corrugated iron.

Lombadina Church

One Arm Point (also known as Ardyaloon) is a few kilometres beyond Kooljaman and is also a great place to stop. You can tour the aquaculture hatchery which is breeding juvenile trochus shells, or you can take part in the boat or fishing tours offered.

The above are only the longest established and most well known places. There are many more. Some have only opened in the last few years, some have been there for a long time but been kept secret by the locals.

Beach on the Dampier Peninsula

There is Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, and Bully's Place, the Whalesong Cafe, many small campgrounds to stay at, and many more Aboriginals communities that you can visit.  For some of those you need to arrange your visit beforehand. ( Destination Kimberley  has the details you need for that.)

Keep in mind that many of those communities are only just starting out in tourism and are not necessarily familiar with the needs of the average tourist. Bring an open mind and be willing to adapt and learn.

But most of all, bring enough time!

Visiting Cape Leveque & Dampier Peninsula, WA | 2023 Guide

Tucked away on Australia’s northwest coast, the Dampier Peninsula is a remote gem. The area boasts  untouched wilderness  with white sand beaches and crystal clear shimmering waters.

Cape Leveque , the top attraction of the region, is a natural wonder known for its vibrant red cliffs and traditional Aboriginal heritage. For those who once thought of Cape Leveque as an inaccessible destination, we have good news! The  road from Broome up Dampier Peninsula is now fully sealed , so pack your camping gear and start planning a Dampier Peninsula road trip!

About Dampier Peninsula & Cape Leveque

Cape Leveque is the main attraction of the Dampier Peninsula. The cape is famous for its pristine coast and wilderness. The local Indigenous people call the peninsula  Ardi , meaning “northeast. ” It’s an area that carries rich traditional history and one that has been sparsely inhabited with small remote communities for centuries.

The  beaches are unspoiled, trees full and natural, and wildlife is abundant . At one point, the peninsula was known as a far-off place with limited road access. Now, thanks to the newly sealed road, it’s an off-the-beaten-path destination for  nature and culture.

Where Is The Dampier Peninsula?

The Dampier Peninsula is located in northwest Australia along the coast of the Kimberley region in   Western Australia . It’s about  200 km north of Broome  and surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean.

How To Get There

Thanks to recent improvements, the main road up the Dampier Peninsula from Broome to Cape Leveque is now  fully sealed . There are still plenty of  off-shoots that require a high clearance 4WD vehicle,  but the main route is now accessible by any vehicle.

To get to Cape Leveque, follow Broome Road for 20 km before hitting the turn-off for Broome-Cape Leveque Road. The sealed all-weather road goes all the way to Cape Leveque and  takes about 2.5 hours.  Keep in mind that if you want to explore more of the unique landscape, you’ll need 4WD to reach places like Pender Bay and Middle Lagoon.

As far as road conditions go, we found the ride to be pretty smooth, but it still required careful driving. There are no overtaking lanes, and weather can be a big factor. Check out the Road Safety Commission’s   Guide to a Safe Drive  before embarking on your trip.

Be prepared for weather extremes in the Kimberley, particularly after the 2023 floods; delays can happen, so always have fresh water, food, and spare tires on hand. Stay safe!

Main Attractions & Things To Do In Dampier Peninsula

Cape leveque.

On the northern tip of the Dampier Peninsula,  Cape Leveque is the main draw  for most visitors making this extraordinary trip. It’s no surprise that the gorgeous  untouched beaches  and  astonishing red cliffs  make a visit here a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The contrast between the vibrant cliffs, white sandy beach, and turquoise water is a feast for the eyes.

Swimming and snorkelling  are popular things to do in Cape Leveque. The cape is also home to a lighthouse and is a good spot for whale watching (during the season). Cape Leveque  fishing is world-class,  and locals invite you to explore the region and uncover its rich Aboriginal history.

Kooljaman At Cape Leveque

Kooljaman is a remote wilderness camp owned by local Indigenous Bardi Jawi communities. It’s famed for its stunning scenery and  eco-conscious beachfront campground . The award-winning place has accolades in Indigenous Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Unique Accommodation and Cultural Tourism. You can easily spend the day combing the beach before having dinner at  Raugi’s Restaurant  and catching the glorious  sunset over the bay .

Unfortunately, this place is closed now due to deteriorating infrastructure and the inability to cover redevelopment costs. Work on the Kooljaman Access Road, which was initially set to finish in September 2023, is on hold. The resort is closed, and the duration of closure remains uncertain. For the latest info on open communities and campgrounds, check with the Broome Visitor Centre  here .

Kooljaman, Cape Laveque

Brian’s Tagalong Tour

No trip to Kooljaman is complete without joining a cultural tour with unforgettable Bardi tour guide, Brian Lee. Brian’s Tagalong Tours of Hunter Creek sheds insight into traditional fishing and crabbing and culminates in a bush tucker lunch under the trees, then enjoy the scenic tours to Sunday Island. It’s the absolute best way to experience the Kimberley region from a local’s perspective.

Spearfishing with Bolo, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Located on the eastern side of the Dampier Peninsula,  Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm  is an  icon of Australia’s pearling industry . The bay’s tidal creeks and sandy banks are prime oyster territory along with the coast’s many points. Rocky shores line the bay, and the views of nearby islands are spectacular.

The farm operates several boat tours, allowing visitors to explore the beauty of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome and see Cable Beach light up in a vibrant display of colours from the water. We recommend their  Giant Whirlpool Tidal Boat tour  to experience the massive tides or journey to the unique waterfall reef. You can also dine at the Cygnet Bay Restaurant and have a taste of pearl meat or even harvest one in this  Behind-the-Scenes Tour & Live Harvest !

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Ardyaloon – One Arm Point

Immerse yourself in local Aboriginal communities in the remote town of Ardyaloon or One Arm Point. From here, you can watch the  giant tides  sweep over the Kimberley islands and explore a   Trochus Shells hatchery . The beaches are completely unspoiled, and the fishing is outstanding. The road is 4WD only, but the vibrant community is well worth a visit.

The Ardyaloon Hatchery Road (One Arm Point) construction and sealing were mostly finished in May 2023, but the final seal comes later this year. If you’re planning a 2024 visit, ensure the road’s fully open before heading to One Arm Point. Check for updates  here .

The Aboriginal Community of Lombadina welcomes visitors to explore their traditions and amazing locations on Thomas Bay. Soak in the beauty of white sand beaches and try your luck at spotting humpback whales in the distance. The Community hosts immersive   tours  to try your hand at  mud crabbing, kayaking, or traditional fishing .

As of May 2023, the Lombadina community is open seven days a week, including weekends from 9 am to 2 pm. If you plan to book a tour, remember to do it at least four days in advance to support the local communities.

Cape Leveque

Follow an unsealed road north of Beagle Bay, and you’ll arrive at Pender Bay, a  hotspot for humpback whales and remote camping.  Explore the 4WD tracks and incredible beaches surrounding this rugged stretch of coast. Stay at Whale Song Campground, and be sure to stop into   Kimberley Wild Gubinge  to taste a superfood plum unique to Australia.

Middle Lagoon

On the same 4WD track from Beagle Bay to Pender Bay, you’ll find Middle Lagoon, another stop for the  picturesque wilderness . Spend the day relaxing on the beach or dropping a line in the water. Camping and limited accommodation options are available at the low-impact coastal camp   Nature’s Hideaway .

View of the beach at Middle Lagoon

James Price Point

A stunning headland on the Kimberley coast, James Price Point is a  local favourite  for swimming and wild camping. Besides its astounding beauty, the area also has large cultural significance for Indigenous Communities. Walk the beaches, observe the wildlife, and keep your eyes peeled for  dinosaur footprints  in the intertidal zones!

James Price Point offers one of the most picturesque FREE wild campgrounds in all of Australia. Camping spots are scattered all along the point and are sprawled between the ocean and the stark red cliffs. You must be completely self-sufficient to camp here, as there are no facilities and no trees/bushes, so a portable loo is a must!

James Price Point, Cape Laveque, Dampier Peninsula

Stop into the Community of Beagle Bay to visit the home of the Nyul Nyul people. The Community’s famous  Sacred Heart Church  features a beautiful building with an  altar made from shells . It’s entirely handmade and adorned with white mother-of-pearl shells.

Where To Stay: Cape Leveque Camping And Dampier Peninsula Accommodation

Waking up to sweeping views of the red cliffs and sparkling ocean is what the Dampier Peninsula is all about. Keep in mind that  Cape Leveque accommodation is limited,  so be sure to plan ahead.

Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat

Gumbanan Wilderness Retreat is located at the eastern tip of the peninsula near One Arm Point and is a great  wilderness bush camp . We stayed here for a couple of nights during our visit and enjoyed the amazing ocean views and rugged landscape. Gumbanan offers basic campsites with toilet/shower facilities. Unfortunately, this gem is closed for the season from August 2023 until further notice.

Cape Leveque

Spending the night at a pearl farm is a pretty cool way to experience the coastal Kimberley region.  Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm  offers visitors 39 remote self-sufficient accommodations ranging from  campsites, caravan sites, to safari tents, it  is Australia’s oldest fully operational public pearl farm! Each site comes with power and water, and there is a fully functional amenities block with hot and cold water. It features a swimming pool, various tours, and the Cygnet Bay Bistro serving dishes inspired by seasonal produce and has unique offerings like pearl meat. For the full experience, splash out on a  heritage-listed Pealer’s shack.  You’ll get a feel for how divers lived in the early days of Australia’s pearling industry.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Wild Camping At James Price Point

James Price Point, or Waldamany, is a stunning  free campsite  located about 1 hour north of Broome. Picture a white sandy beach surrounded by rocky red cliffs where 4WD fully self-contained vehicles can spend the night above the sea. The site is beautiful but can get  very windy,  so prepare for rugged, wild camping. Also, note that there is a  3-day limit  on camping and no facilities.

I tried to visit Dampier peninsular in may 2022 but found that after driving the 200 km road that local people had blocked the road to Cape Leveque and Beagle Bay so we saw nothing but shrubs along the way We had visited before and knew of its beauty

A dreamy coastline, wine and wildlife make Cape Town, South Africa one of the easiest cities to fall in love with as it entices you with its beckoning beauty. The lovely accents of the friendly folks add to its charisma.

As a traveler to over 50 countries, few places on earth have seduced me like the capital of South Africa. I quickly understood its allure and why friends raved about it with wistful eyes reliving memories of their time there when I said I was starting my African adventure in Cape Town. My love affair with the city began when the jagged coastline came into view as I stared out of the airplane window marveling at Table Mountain and Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years before the fall of apartheid.

I had planned two nights in Cape Town to kick off a multi-week conservation safari adventure. Before I even landed, I knew my short romp would simply be flirting with a mesmerizing city drenched with charm. If you’re short on time, here are the top things to do in Cape Town, South Africa on a short visit.

1. Stay in V&A Waterfront

day trip broome to cape leveque

As part of the oldest working harbor in South Africa and in the Southern Hemisphere, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, commonly called V&A Waterfront , is a bustling harbor filled with shops, restaurants and hotels. For an elegant boutique hotel experience, book a room at Victoria and Alfred Hotel. For an ultra-scenic view of the Cape Town Harbor and Table Mountain, book one of their mountain view rooms. The lively harbor is very safe, even at night. If you’re heading out on an African safari after your stay in Cape Town, stop in Cape Union Mart for any last-minute necessities. The outdoor adventure store has been around since 1933 and is the sole carrier of K-Way, a South African outdoor clothing brand. There are numerous restaurants with outdoor seating along the water. If you want to mingle with locals on the waterfront, Time Out Market is the place. There are 13 unique food concepts housed in the historic power station building.

2. Ride the Aerial Cableway Up Table Mountain

day trip broome to cape leveque

For a mountaintop experience without much effort, taking a ride on a cable car up Table Mountain is one of the top things to do in Cape Town, South Africa. The most prominent landscape feature is the flat-topped Table Mountain soaring out of the ocean. Since 1929, a cableway has run up the mountain. It’s a less than 5-minute ride to the top on Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. The floor of your cable car rotates giving everyone 360° views during the ride. Table Mountain is a national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. If you get it a clear day, consider yourself lucky as it’s often shrouded in orographic clouds and sea fog covering the mountain like a tablecloth. The weather phenomenon comes with a legend that it’s a smoking contest between the devil and a local pirate named Van Hunks.

The aerial cableway does shut down for annual maintenance mid-July through August. To save time, purchase tickets online . Take a rain jacket and layers as the weather changes quickly. While at the top, enjoy a coffee with a view. Give yourself at least an hour to wander around the trails on the top of the mountain. Keep an eye out for dassies or rock hyraxes sunning on the rocks. They look like guinea pigs or marmots but are genetically closely related to elephants. If you have more time you can hike up instead of taking the aerial cableway.

3. Stroll Through Galleries in Bo-Kaap

day trip broome to cape leveque

Cape Town’s most colorful neighborhood is Bo-Kaap . The cobblestoned streets are lined with pastel-colored homes, taking a stroll through the street or snapping a few photos is one of the best things to do in Cape Town, South Africa on your visit. Many are private residences, but some are home to galleries and shops. The buildings were originally white as part of a garrison for soldiers, but freed slaves settled here after emancipation in the 1830s. My guide told me, “Their expression of freedom was very colorful.” Located in “Upper Cape,” the picturesque streets make Bo-Kaap one of the most photographed neighborhoods in the city. Pop into some of the galleries like the one featuring Nathan Chikoto. The recycle artist uses discarded items like aluminum cans and turns them into intriguing works of art. You can’t miss the large elephant made from used coffee pods in front of the gallery on Chiappini Street.

4. Stop at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg

day trip broome to cape leveque

Keep a color theme going as you head to Muizenberg Beach in False Bay and see the colorful beach huts as you watch surfers ride the waves in “Surfers Corner.” If you have time, this is the place to learn to surf. You can rent gear and take a lesson. You can also just make a quick stop for a lovely stroll on the beach.

5. Stop for Lunch in Simon’s Town

day trip broome to cape leveque

Simon’s Town is home to a naval base and baboons. You’ll probably laugh when you see the street signs for the baboons often seen in the historic seaside town. They are wild, so keep your distance. Simon’s Town is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and part of a string of quaint coastal communities as you make your way to Cape of Good Hope. For a relaxing lunch with a view, grab a table on the terrace at Harbor View Restaurant. Sip a South African chenin blanc while you nosh on fresh hake in their fish and chips. Enjoy a stellar harbor view as you dine.

6. See the Boulders Penguin Colony

day trip broome to cape leveque

After a leisurely lunch, head to Boulders Beach Penguin Colony to see penguins frolicking on the beach, one of best things to do in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s just a few minutes from Harbor View Restaurant. The colony is home to several thousand African Penguins. Sadly, the species is declining overall, but the colony is a conservation success story. In 1982, there were only two breeding pairs and today there are over 3,000 birds in the colony. Stroll the boardwalk looking for the penguins nesting in the dunes. At the overlook you have a great view of penguins basking in the sunshine or waddling in and out of the water. Penguins can be seen year-round, but most spend time feeding in the sea during September and October. Juvenile birds molt during January. If you want to see babies, visit during April, May, or June.

7. Spend a Couple of Hours at Cape of Good Hope

day trip broome to cape leveque

Part of the adventure in exploring Cape of Good Hope is the drive itself filled with stunning scenery and unexpected wildlife sightings like the baboons on trucks we encountered when we tried to stop at the Buffelsfontein Visitor Center. Cape of Good Hope is also known as the “Cape of Storms,” because of strong winds and the treacherous waters where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet near the Cape. You’ll feel the gusty winds as you stop at viewpoints. Take the Flying Dutchman funicular up to Cape Point Lighthouse. The funicular’s name is a nod to the Flying Dutchman legend of a ghost ship lost in a storm near the Cape and doomed to sail the oceans forever. You can also hike up to the lighthouse if you don’t want to do the 3-minute ride on the funicular.

From the historic lighthouse built in 1859, you’re treated to an incredible panoramic view from False Bay to the actual Cape of Good Hope and Atlantic Ocean. As you drive from Cape Point Lighthouse down to Cape of Good Hope keep an eye out for wildlife including eland and bontebok. As we got close to the Cape, we encountered ostrich on both sides of the road. It felt like I was on an unexpected mini safari. You’ll likely encounter at least a small crowd at the Cape of Good Hope sign as tourists snap pictures at the most southwestern point in Africa. While at the sign, watch the waves crash on the rocks near the shoreline. You might catch a glimpse of some seals along with numerous birds. Like Table Mountain, make sure you have rain gear and layers as the weather changes quickly.

8. Make an Ice Cream Stop in Noordhoek

day trip broome to cape leveque

Noordhoek Farm Village is a fun area filled with eateries and shops. If you happen to be there on a Wednesday, enjoy the open-air evening market with food stalls, artisan vendors and live entertainment. For handcrafted ice cream in Cape Town, the place to patronize is Kristen’s Kick-Ass Ice Cream. Made in small batches using local dairy and other ingredients, the ice cream is to die for. Order a cone of their sweet cream dark chocolate and honeycomb for a unique ice cream treat to cool you off late afternoon.

9. Catch Sunset from Chapman’s Peak Road

day trip broome to cape leveque

This iconic drive along the Atlantic Coast connects Noordhoek and Hout Bay. “Chappies” toll road, as locals call Chapman’s Peak Road, is named after John Chapman. In 1607, he was a pilot on the English ship Consent sent to row ashore in hopes of finding provisions. He recorded the bay as Chapman’s Chaunce and the name stuck until Dutch settlers established Hout Bay in the 1650s. Construction on the road started in 1915. The first section was completed in 1919 and the scenic drive “hewn out of the face of sheer mountains” opened in 1922. With 114 curves, the ultra-scenic road follows the rocky coastline. While this drive is breathtaking any time of day, it's jaw-dropping at sunset. We pulled off to watch the sky turn golden as the sun sank into oblivion where the water meets the sky on the horizon. With the sky still aglow, we made a second stop at Chapman’s Peak Drive Lookout Point before completing the drive to Hout Bay and back to V&A Waterfront.

I found one day to not be enough time in Cape Town. You need at least two full days to enjoy some of the nearby wineries like Stellenbosch Vineyards and tour Robben Island, which takes a minimum of 3 and a half hours. If you only have a day, it’s worth hiring a guide so you can see as much as possible. Whether you have a day or a week, you’ll likely feel the seduction of this captivating city and wish for more time in Cape Town.

Day Trip Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

I’m always on the lookout for fun day trips from San Jose that can satisfy my wanderlust.

As a tech geek, one of my favorite destinations is Silicon Valley.

The place oozes innovation.

You can almost feel the creativity in the air, and visiting the tech giants like Google and Apple is priceless.

It’s a massive playground for the intellectually curious, but it’s not all code and gadgets.

There’s an unexpected dash of culture, too, with fascinating museums and delicious international cuisines.

Another destination that I love is Muir Woods.

It’s a national park that preserves some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world.

Imagine breathing in the crisp, eucalyptus-scented air while wandering amidst towering redwoods.

It’s a tranquil escape from the city rush, a total soul-soother.

Now, San Francisco is the quintessential city experience.

From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the quirky charm of Pier 39, it’s a city that never stops surprising.

Where else can you ride a historic cable car, then turn a corner and find a gourmet sourdough bakery?

All three destinations are within an hour or two from San Jose, so they’re perfect for a day trip.

But they’re also very different from each other, so it depends on what you’re looking for.

Do you want to be inspired by innovation, reconnect with nature, or experience diversity?

Where will your adventure begin?

How I Picked The Destinations

Choosing the perfect day trip destination from San Jose was a challenging task, but I’ve got you covered.

As a resident of California, I know the state like the back of my hand.

I’ve experienced these gems firsthand, combining my personal explorations with extensive research and conversations with locals.

I handpicked these destinations because they offer something unique and unforgettable.
