There are a number of ways to find new places to visit or to be inspired by the stories and experiences from others, but travel magazines are among the best options.

Thankfully, there are some very good travel magazines that are perfect for feeding your hunger for travel-related content and inspiration. Here, we’ll showcase the best travel magazines you should be following. Some of them have moved to digital-only publications, but the majority of them are still available in a printed magazine if that’s what you prefer (if they’re currently digital-only, that will be specified below).

Some of these magazines cover travel in general, while others take a more niche-specific approach. Check out the descriptions to see which ones are likely to interest you.

Afar, launched in 2009, is one of the leading travel magazines. Although it covers destinations from around the world, its focus is experiential travel. It was created to inspire and guide those who travel the world seeking to connect with its people and experience their cultures. It features beautiful photos and engaging stories that are sure to inspire wanderlust.

Travel + Leisure

Travel + Leisure has been in print since 1937, and under the Travel + Leisure name since 1971. It’s another travel industry leader that should be on every avid traveler’s reading list. The “World’s Best” awards issue is an annual highlight.

Condé Nast Traveler

Condé Nast Traveler is a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine that has won many awards. If you enjoy luxury travel, this is the magazine for you. Even if you don’t travel in luxury, you’ll appreciate the photos and travel stories, as well as details about particular destinations.

National Geographic

National Geographic provides you with everything you need to know about scenery, history, and traveling to all ends of the earth. National Geographic is most well known for its award-winning travel photojournalism.

Wanderlust Magazine

Wanderlust is an award-winning British travel magazine with a focus on unique and enriching travel experiences. You’ll find trip inspiration, ideas, tips, reviews, competitions, and celebrity interviews.

Cruise Travel

The indispensable magazine for today’s yachtsman, providing power and sailing enthusiasts authoritative evaluations of new boats, gear, and equipment. Coverage of cruising, traveling, and racing destinations.

Destination

Destination is another niche-specific publication that focuses specifically on Caribbean destinations. You’ll learn about places to stay, things to do, and towns that you might not have been aware of. They also cover style and culture as well as food and drink.

Global Traveler

Geographical

Founded in 1935, Geographic is one of the oldest British travel magazines. Geographical brings the rich diversity of the world’s culture, wildlife, and places into its readers’ living rooms. The magazine is informative, authoritative, and educational, covering a wide range of subject areas all illustrated with superb high-quality photography.

Outside Magazine

For 35 years OUTSIDE magazine has been the intelligent person’s guide to the always exhilarating world outside. Award-winning writers, great stories of adventure, tips on the latest gear, where & when to go for active travelers.

American Road

Explore America’s back roads with American Road magazine. Whether you travel in an RV, on a Harley, or in a minivan, you’ll find road trips, maps, diners, motels, and roadside attractions in every issue. This is an excellent resource for anyone planning a road trip.

RV Magazine

RV magazine covers travel from the perspective of those who travel in the comfort of an RV. All of the publications listed above still produce a printed travel magazine. Of course, many publications have gone exclusively to digital versions because of the costs related to printing and shipping. In this section, we’ll cover online travel magazines that are excellent options (much more than just a blog) for reading on your tablet or computer.

Budget Travel

Budget Travel (now digital-only) helps savvy consumers get the most out of every day, every destination, and every dollar. This used to be a popular print-based magazine (and one of my personal favorites), but now the content is only available digitally. You’ll find details about locations all around the world, so it’s a great overall option.

If you enjoy beaches and island travel, this award-winning and spectacularly visual travel magazine is a highlight that you won’t want to miss. ISLANDS (now digital-only) focuses on places we all dream about: islands around the world.

Wander is a digital-only travel magazine with a unique focus on wellness. If you’re interested in wellness tourism, this is the best resource for you.

Pathfinders Travel

Pathfinders Travel (digital-only) is the leading leisure travel publication for the Black travel enthusiast. Its affluent, educated and sophisticated readers have a thirst for information on family, romantic, and weekend destinations.

Backpacker (digital-only) is the leading outdoor adventure magazine, dedicated to helping readers enjoy everything nature has to offer. Travel magazines are great resources for inspiration and information. Inciteful articles go beyond the things to do in a destination and explore why you should visit in the first place. Hotel reviews, travel gear roundups, exploration of new trends, and interviews with interesting people in the travel industry keep you entertained through dozens of glossy pages.

Some travel magazines cover the globe, offering a chance to see exotic destinations in far-off lands. Other magazines stick closer to home, covering only regions or states. And then, special interest magazines cover topics like travel gear, outdoor recreation, and unique places to visit.

But when was the last time you picked up a travel magazine?

Browse through this list of travel magazines worthy of a subscription. Read the details of the magazine’s coverage, digital vs. print editions, and their publication frequency. And keep in mind – these make excellent gifts as well.

What about city magazines?

City magazines can offer additional insight into a destination, but not always. The magazines also include local news, shopping guides for home décor, and seasonal things to do around town. I recommend checking out city magazines when you travel but don’t get a subscription unless you visit that destination several times yearly.

A relative newcomer to the travel magazine market, Afar began publishing six issues each year in 2009. The magazine publishes immersive stories that go deep into the culture and history of travel destinations around the world. Each issue also features columns about travel gear, food, and profiles of interesting people in the industry.

Founded in New York City in 1909, Condé Nast is a vast media company with nearly a dozen magazine publications. Condé Nast Traveler is a luxury travel magazine published eight times yearly, featuring destination guides, hotel and resort reviews, and essays. Columns explore travel trends, the hottest new restaurants and hotels, and inside info on prices worldwide.

First published in 1978, Food & Wine is a lifestyle magazine featuring articles about cooking and entertaining at home. But the magazine also features restaurant reviews, interviews with celebrity chefs, and new culinary trends to try worldwide. The magazine is published monthly with seasonal themes and travel inspiration in every issue.

It was a gut punch when National Geographic Traveler was shuttered in 2019. Published for twenty-five years, the travel-themed magazine was rolled into the flagship National Geographic . The broad-topic parent magazine now features one or two travel features in their monthly issues and a vast trove of information with a digital subscription.

Published in New York City since 1937, Travel + Leisure is one of the top travel magazines in the world. The monthly publication features articles highlighting destinations worldwide, columns to help you save money while traveling, and reviews of hotels and restaurants. It’s one of the most inspiring magazines and the one subscription I recommend everyone order.

Wanderlust is the United Kingdom’s top travel magazine, published in London since 1993. The magazine focuses on travel destinations throughout the UK and Europe with destination guides, essays, interviews, and reviews. The bi-monthly publication features a whopping 200+ pages that will almost certainly keep you reading until the next issue arrives. A subscription also grants access to their vast digital archives.

Regional Travel Magazines

Regional travel magazines broaden their topics beyond just travel to also include home décor and living. But these magazines are also an excellent resource for finding off-the-beaten-path destinations or learning about a new region of the country to explore.

Based in Roanoke, Virginia, BlueRidge Country is a lifestyle and travel magazine focused on the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. The monthly issues feature a section on upcoming festivals and events that are perfect for weekend getaways. You’ll also find destination articles, hotel and restaurant reviews, and exciting things to do in the great outdoors in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

National Park Week 2024

Learn about the annual celebration of the National Park System and read my travel guides to national park units across the country.

With a subscription to Caribbean Living , you’ll “travel beyond the beach” with an inside look at the culture of the Caribbean islands. Issues are only published four times each year, but the publications are packed with intriguing travel stories, unique places to visit, and tips on how to make the most of your tropical getaway.

Life was turbulent for Coastal Living after Meredith purchased Time, Inc. in 2018. After a year stuck exclusively on newsstands, the magazine was again made available for subscriptions. The four issues published annually are packed with destination guides, travel tips, and reviews to make the most of your coastal getaway.

Published six times yearly, Coastal Virginia covers the region around Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore. The publication includes lists of local events and festivals, travel guides to popular coastal destinations, and interviews with the local business owners who keep the travel industry thriving in coastal Virginia.

When Cowboys & Indians began publishing in 1992, its editors aimed to make it “the premier magazine of the West.” And with 16 issues each year, you’ll have plenty to read about the not-so-wild west. Each issue is packed with home décor, recipes for local foods, travel guides to popular destinations, and upcoming events and festivals.

Based in Des Moines, Iowa, Midwest Living has been published four times yearly since 1986. The issues explore the vast region with travel guides, interviews, and reviews of places to visit. Issues include lifestyle topics like home décor and recipes, but you’ll still find plenty of travel topics to inspire your next Midwest adventure.

Based in Waynesville, North Carolina at the footsteps of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Smoky Mountain Living publishes stories covering the southern Appalachian Mountains. The stories include local arts and crafts, culture, music, and travel. It’s an excellent magazine for more than just the national park – it’s every small mountain town and hidden cove you never knew you wanted to visit.

The first issue of Sunset was published in 1898 – no kidding. Initially published by the Southern Pacific Railroad, today the lifestyle magazine covers the American West with topics on home life, cooking, gardening, and travel. Although it’s a broad-ranged magazine, the travel articles are inspirational.

Published since 1935, Yankee celebrates the culture of the New England states. Six issues each year feature stories about local traditions, festivals and events, lifestyle, and reviews of up-and-coming boutique hotels and restaurants.

State Travel Magazines

Narrowing the focus, state travel magazines focus on lifestyle and travel topics within their borders. If you visit a particular state every year, a subscription to one of these magazines could be invaluable for inspiring you to visit new destinations.

Published since 1935, Alaska is more than just a magazine to promote travel across the northernmost state – it’s also a journal of the Alaskan way of life. The magazine is published ten times yearly and features destination guides, seasonal activities, and outdoor adventures across the state. The magazine also featured excellent information about hunting, national parks, and how to travel across the state.

In 1921, the Arizona Department of Transportation began publishing a 10-page pamphlet to promote the highways across the state. Today, Arizona Highways is a monthly magazine published in Phoenix. Each issue includes road trip possibilities, travel guides, and stories about the state’s history and culture.

Published six times yearly, Louisiana Life includes roundups of upcoming events and festivals, travel guides, and an inside look at the state’s culture.

The “Land of 10,000 Lakes” is brought to life with Minnesota Monthly , which is now ironically only published six times annually . The travel and lifestyle magazine features articles on destinations to visit, events you must attend, and things to do across the state and over the water.

New Hampshire Magazine publishes 10 issues each year packed with information about the state’s tourist destinations, seasonal guides to explore autumn colors and spring flowers, and reviews of local restaurants.

New Jersey Monthly publishes an issue every month of the year filled with lifestyle tips, destination guides, and things to do across the state to the Jersey Shore.

Launched in 1923, New Mexico Magazine was the first magazine to focus on travel within a single state. With 11 issues published annually by the New Mexico Tourism Department in Santa Fe, the magazine features articles on the state’s culture, history, outdoor recreation, and destinations.

Since 1956, Oklahoma Today Magazine has been the official publication of the state of Oklahoma. The issues – published 6 times yearly – feature articles on history, culture, food, and travel across the state.

Published since 1933, Our State is one of the best state travel magazines in the country. The monthly issues are filled with travel guides, upcoming events and festivals, stellar photography, and things to do in small towns and big cities across the Tarheel State.

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the country, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. And with 12 issues of Rhode Island Monthly published each year, you can learn all about it. Published since 1974 by the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Highways is a monthly magazine that features destination guides, road trip itineraries, and seasonal inspiration for travel across the state. Based in Austin, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department protects the wildlife and their habitats across the state. Published only 5 times each year, Vermont Magazine explores the history, culture, and travel across the state. Articles take a deep dive with interviews, reviews, and guides to help you get the most out of a visit to the state.

Special Interest Magazines

Instead of travel guides or restaurant reviews or business owner interviews, the special interest magazine focuses on specific things to do while home or traveling. You’ll find stories about outdoor recreation, exploring national park units, and how to travel in an RV in the pages of these magazines.

Adventure Cyclist Magazine has been published since 1975 by the Adventure Cycling Association . The Missoula, Montana-based association is an excellent resource for adventurous bicycle trails, gear reviews, and technical guides. Their magazine reflects this mission with 9 issues published annually packed with useful information. Membership in the association includes a subscription to the magazine and vice versa.

Published 4 times annually, American Road is the definitive magazine of the road tripper. The issues are filled with road trip travelogues, itineraries, roadside attractions, and reviews of restaurants and hotels you’ll find along the way.

Backcountry is the only magazine dedicated to outdoor recreation far from the paved highways. Published six times yearly, the magazine features gear reviews, backcountry tips, and destination guides worldwide. It’s an excellent resource for discovering backcountry adventures, how to get there, and where to stay.

Blue Ridge Motorcycling is published 4 times annually by the same folks behind Smoky Mountain Living . The magazine features scenic and thrilling motorcycle routes throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Southern Appalachians. Issues also feature motorcycle gear reviews and travel guides perfect for two-wheel adventures.

Published in Charleston, South Carolina, Garden & Gun is a regional magazine focusing on the American South. It’s not entirely a travel magazine with a wide range of topics from household décor to outdoor adventure. But the magazine regularly publishes fantastic articles about destinations you need to visit.

Lighthouse Digest is an interesting magazine subscription, especially for lovers of lighthouses. Published bi-monthly, the magazine features the history of the lighthouses, stories of previous keepers and their families, and travel guides on how to visit them. It’s a great resource for festivals and events to help you plan a weekend getaway to a lighthouse.

National Parks Magazine is the official magazine published by the National Parks Conservation Association. Published 4 times annually, the issues are filled with conservation stories and ways people can help protect the parks. But it also features excellent travel guides on things to do in the parks and sustainable ways to visit.

Published since 1977, Outside is a magazine about everything to do outside. The magazine is published bi-monthly. Each issue is stuffed with outdoor adventure gear reviews, technical articles, interviews of outdoor enthusiasts, and travel guides to amazing outdoor adventure destinations.

RoadRUNNER is a relative newcomer to the travel magazine domain, published for the first time in 2001. Based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the magazine covers all topics related to motorcycle touring and traveling with one headlight. Published bi-monthly, issues feature gear reviews, travel guides, and thrilling routes to explore on two wheels.

RV Magazine is the premier magazine for recreational vehicle owners. Articles on tips, vehicle reviews, and new gear are published monthly. Print, digital, and combination subscriptions are offered to get the best of everything they offer.

Around 50 years ago, the editors of a magazine called  Travel & Camera  made a big leap forward, embracing not just photography, but the entire world. Much has changed since our first issue was published back in 1971 — for starters, we swapped the ampersand sign for a plus symbol and we launched this website in 1998. But one thing remained the same — and that's our passion for travel, both near and far. Today, we reach more than 16 million travelers every month, and our team includes a network of hundreds of writers and photographers across the globe, all providing a local eye on the best places to stay, eat, see, and explore.

Jacqui Gifford has been the editor in chief of  Travel + Leisure , the world's leading travel media brand, since 2018. From 2013 to 2018, she served as travel director, special projects editor, and senior editor with T+L. Under her leadership, the brand has won two National Magazine Awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and a James Beard Award, in addition to numerous awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, the North American Travel Journalists Association, and Folio. She appears frequently as an expert guest on television programs, including NBC's  Today , to share travel ideas and discuss trends within the industry. A graduate of Princeton University with a B.A. in English, Jacqui was born in Japan, and raised in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and New Hope, Pennsylvania. She has traveled the world extensively, and lives in New York City with her husband, Robert, and son, Bobby.

Peter Terzian is the features editor of  Travel + Leisure , where he has been on staff since 2017. He has been an editor at  Elle Decor ,  Culture + Travel , and  Out  magazines, as well as  Newsday , the Long Island newspaper. He has written for the  Paris Review ,  Bookforum , the  Los Angeles Times , and  T  magazine, and is the editor of  Heavy Rotation: Twenty Writers on the Albums That Changed Their Lives , which was published by Harper Perennial in 2009.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years, for outlets including  Condé Nast Traveler ,  Skift , and  The Huffington Post . Though he's worked at both legacy and start-up media outlets, and for both print magazines and digital-only publications, his reporting over the years has focused on how consumers can have better trips and the trends shaping the future of the industry. Outside of work, he's an unrepentant traveler who's fond of flipping through old passports and sailing small craft on the beautiful Hudson River.

Jamie Hergenrader is the Commerce Director of the Travel Group at Dotdash Meredith where she leads the content strategy of product reviews and recommendations for the company's travel brands. She joined the company in 2018 and has nearly a decade of experience writing and editing for travel and lifestyle publications.

Emily Belfiore is a commerce writer for Travel + Leisure , covering product news and deals. Her work has also appeared in Allure , Byrdie , InStyle , Real Simple , Shape , and more.

Ivy's original reporting and interviews as a brand spokesperson have been featured on ABC News, CBS News, CNBC, Bloomberg, AP, The Huffington Post, USA Today, and more.

Founding Consumers Reports

Striking workers formed Consumers Union, now known as Consumer Reports. CR was created as an independent, nonprofit organization, using testing, reporting, and advocacy to counter marketplace misinformation and advance consumer protections

Guiding Consumers in Wartime

When the U.S. went to war in 1941, manufacturers focused on war production. Many consumers had to ration to make ends meet. To help people make smart decisions with limited funds, CR published a weekly newsletter, “Bread & Butter.”

Exposing Nuclear Fallout in Food

CR launched the first large-scale investigation of consumer exposure to fallout from nuclear weapons testing in food, analyzing the amount of Strontium-90 in milk. As a result, the federal government expanded its monitoring of nuclear fallout.

Surgeon General’s Landmark Report on Smoking

For a decade, CR conducted independent testing and research to highlight the dangers of cigarettes. The Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health used CR’s work to draft its landmark report.

U.S. Government Mandates Seat Belts

CR’s tests showed two-thirds of seat belts failed basic safety and durability tests, leading CR to call for better belts and for federal standards that incorporated crash testing. The government later mandated them.

Fighting for Safer Drinking Water

CR published a landmark three-part series on the safety of the United States water supply, which played a key role in encouraging Congress to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Setting New Standards for Child Safety Seats

When CR first crash-tested car seats, 12 out of 15 were rated Not Acceptable. After CR published its findings, the government required manufacturers to certify that their seats would pass a similar test.

Exposing the Dangers of Pesticides

In a study of U.S. Department of Agriculture data, CR found pesticide levels in some fruits and vegetables were too high. Shortly after, one of the pesticides was banned for use on food crops commonly consumed by children.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Created

CR helped to mobilize support in Congress to create the CFPB, an independent agency responsible for overseeing the financial industry with powers to police abusive practices and to enact new consumer protections.

Bisphenol-A Banned in Baby Products

CR was one of the first groups to test food packaging for BPA. After working to pass bans in several states, the FDA finally announced a federal ban on BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups (2012) and infant formula packaging (2013).

A Win on Backup Cameras

After years of CR’s advocating for standards to address the problem of blind zones behind cars and trucks, the Department of Transportation finally required backup cameras in all vehicles less than 10,000 pounds by 2018.

Advancing Laws to Protect Consumer Privacy

The California Consumer Privacy Act provided key individual privacy rights, such as the right to stop the sale of personal info. CR fought efforts to weaken the legislation, mobilizing CR members to call on legislators to enact privacy protections.

Advancing and Protecting Digital Consumer Rights

CR launched the Digital Lab—a bold initiative to advance and protect consumer rights in the digital era by focusing on testing connected products and platforms for hackability, digital privacy, and how responsibly our data is handled.

Fighting Hidden Cable Fees

CR testified before Congress about cable TV fees, following years of advocacy and research. Thousands of CR members contacted lawmakers, and Congress passed a law requiring providers to disclose the total price of service before a consumer signs up.

Protecting Kids & Infants From Dangerous Products

CR’s investigation into the safety of infant inclined sleepers linked to dozens of deaths led to the recall of over 5 million sleepers. Following CR’s outreach, several retailers and online marketplaces said they would stop selling the sleepers.

Navigating the Pandemic

Millions turned to CR for free articles about staying safe and avoiding misinformation as COVID-19 spread. CR advocated for relief measures in Congress to help people stay in their homes, stay online, and avoid surprise medical bills.

Helping Student Borrowers, Stopping Scams

California approved a landmark law championed by CR to provide student loan borrowers the nation’s strongest protections against loan-servicing abuses. The state also created a watchdog to crack down on financial fraud and predatory lending.

Raising Standards for Infant Safety

CR helped pass a landmark national rule to establish strong minimum safety standards for infant sleep products for the very first time.

Making the Green Choice

CR launched the Green Choice rating to help people identify the most environmentally friendly cars, washers, and other products. CR also helped get new greenhouse gas rules for vehicles to reduce emissions and help consumers save money on fuel.

Entry to the Travel Media Awards 2024

Entrants can submit work in 23 categories, covering a wide range of travel media sectors free of charge. On this page, you’ll find the award categories and details of eligibility. Below are the categories for the 2024 Travel Media Awards, which will take place on Monday 28th October. 

Accessible Travel Writer of the Year

This category is open to both consumer and trade travel journalists who’ve reported on accessible travel.

• Nominees should submit three examples of their work published in print or online between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. The published stories must be uploaded as separate text-only documents with the bylines deleted to enable anonymous judging. Please include the headline and sell as well as the body copy. Formatting: Arial, size 12, single-space. File type: .pdf or .docx. File name: headline and publication name.
• This entry requires a 100-word supporting statement outlining the writer’s unique contribution to travel media within the context of this category.
• Judges will be looking for a travel journalist who has consistently produced outstanding content about accessible travel. Stories should be engaging, well-crafted and original.
• Judges will be expecting to see breadth of subject matter and depth of research in submissions.
• Judges are looking for media that raises awareness of the issues around accessible travel while remaining inspiring and informative.

Blogger/Vlogger of the Year

This award is open to UK travel bloggers or vloggers who’ve been posting regularly for at least a year (to 30 April 2023). Qualifying channels include personal blogs or websites and YouTube and Vimeo channels.

• Nominees should submit digital links to three examples of blog posts or videos posted between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024 (they may submit blogs, videos or a combination of both).
• Nominees must also provide in the supporting statement box: their blog or vlog address; the number of average monthly unique visitors; page/video view figures for the three examples; details of additional reach and engagement via social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and X; and a target audience profile (max. 100 words).
• Judges will be expecting to see breadth and variety in the submissions and will consider both the quality of the entries and the quality of the nominees’ personal brand, as well as their ability to engage their audience.
• In particular, the judges will look for material that’s on-brand and shows an understanding of the target audience. They will reward entries that are thought-provoking, entertaining and show original ideas or formats.

Breaking Travel News of the Year

This category is open to both consumer and trade travel journalists.

• Nominees must submit three examples of news stories they published in print, broadcast and/or online between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. The published stories must be uploaded as separate text-only documents with the bylines deleted to enable anonymous judging. Please include the headline and sell as well as the body copy. Formatting: Arial, size 12, single-space. File type: .pdf or .docx. File name: headline and publication name.
• Judges will be looking to award a journalist who’s demonstrated their ability to sniff out a breaking news story with relevance for a specified audience. They will have set it in context and maintained a good balance between the pressure of getting the story out quickly and factual accuracy.
• Judges will look at the entries in the wider context of how the event was covered in the media, judging whether the nominee has been able to look at information from a different angle or add original reporting.

Broadcast Programme of the Year

This category is open for programmes made for TV, radio, podcast and online channels (excluding YouTube and Vimeo). Submissions may include a one-off programme or one of a series of programmes, including features, documentaries, interviews and phone-ins.

• Nominees should submit the URL of a television, radio, online or podcast programme broadcast in the UK between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. If the programme is a series, they should submit the episode that, in their view, best represents the series as a whole. If the programme is not publicly available, a link to a private file is permitted.
• Judges are looking for programmes that demonstrate informative, original, thought-provoking and entertaining storytelling; keep the audience engaged for their entire duration; and are on-brand and show understanding of the target audience.
• Judges will reward programmes that make the most of their format (audio or visual) to bring a destination, experience or event to life.

Consumer Magazine Section of the Year

This award is for consumer magazines published regularly in print in the UK, with a minimum of three issues a year, that aren’t dedicated travel magazines but have printed travel sections.

• Nominees must submit three examples of their publication’s travel section published on different dates between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.
• Nominees should send PDFs or links to digital versions. In special cases where this is not possible, five copies of each example can be sent to Sabera Sattar at APL Media Ltd, Unit 310 Highgate Studios, 53-79 Highgate Road, London NW5 1TL.
• Judges will consider travel sections in their entirety and reward outstanding entries that demonstrate varied content, design, readability and photography.
• Where relevant, judges will take into account whether the travel section is considerate of the magazine’s target audience.

Consumer Publication of the Year – Online

This award is open to UK-based consumer travel websites or publications that are published regularly on a digital platform. Publications may be a website, digital magazine or published on an app.

• Digital magazines should send the URL of their publication and three issues between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024 that they wish to submit as examples. If relevant, they should also submit details on how to access the issues for free.
• Websites should send the URLs of three articles posted between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. Where relevant, they should also submit details on how to access those articles for free.
• App-based publications should send instructions on how to download their app and three chosen issues between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024 that they wish to submit as examples. If relevant, they should also submit details on how to access those issues for free.
• Judges will consider the content in its entirety. They’ll be looking for publications that are visually exciting, with well-written, engaging content and excellent photography. They’ll also be looking for content that shows understanding of its target audience, is innovative in its approach and that looks to highlight or raise awareness of topical issues, where appropriate.

Consumer Publication of the Year – Print

This award is open to all consumer travel magazines published in print in the UK on a regular basis, with a minimum of three issues a year.

• Nominees must submit three individual examples of their publication published in print on different dates between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.

Consumer Writer of the Year

This award is open to professional consumer travel writers or journalists.

• Judges will be looking for a travel journalist who’s consistently written outstanding articles or features that are well researched, creative, original and appeal strongly to their target audience.
• Judges will be expecting to see breadth and variety in the three pieces of content.

Customer Content of the Year

This award is open to business-to-customer travel-focused magazines and digital content produced for business-to-customer use which illustrate excellence in their market. Magazines must be published at least three times a year, while websites and website sections must be regularly updated.

• Nominees in print must submit three examples of their publication published between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.
• Digital magazines should submit the URL and three chosen issues as examples of their publication between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. If relevant, they should also submit details on how to access those issues for free.
• Websites and website sections should submit their URL and three examples of articles posted between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. If relevant, they should also submit details on how to access those articles for free.
• Judges will be looking for content that is visually exciting, with well-written, engaging features and excellent photography. They’ll also be looking for content that shows a deep understanding of its target audience, is innovative in its approach and looks to highlight or raise awareness of topical issues, where appropriate.
• Judges will be expecting to see breadth and variety in the three pieces of content, covering both the business and the wider industry, and will be taking into consideration how the brand has been developed.

Emerging Writer of the Year

This award is open to consumer or trade travel writers who have been published professionally for under five years on 30 April 2024.

• Nominees should submit three pieces of work published in print or online between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. The published stories must be uploaded as separate text-only documents with the bylines deleted to enable anonymous judging. Please include the headline and sell as well as the body copy. Formatting: Arial, size 12, single-space. File type: .pdf or .docx. File name: headline and publication name.
• Judges will be looking for a talented emerging writer who has written lively articles and who demonstrates creativity, originality and the ability to get behind the stories.

Guide of the Year

Nominated guides must have been published as a book, online or as an app between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.

• Books: Nominees should submit two chapters that are representative of the book as a PDF link or digital links. If not available, nominees should clearly mark the submitted chapters and send five copies of the publication to Sabera Sattar at APL Media Ltd, Unit 310 Highgate Studios, 53-79 Highgate Road, London NW5 1TL. Books must be either a first edition or a major revision published in the UK.
• Online or app: Nominees should send a link to the travel guide or body of work being entered. If relevant, they should also submit details on how to access the work for free. If necessary, submit representative articles, pages or chapters so that the entry doesn’t exceed 5,000 words.
• Judges will be looking for a guide that demonstrates outstanding design and readability. They’ll reward content that demonstrates originality and good research, providing essential, easy-to-read insights to destinations that give the reader highlights and clear directions to places not to be missed.

National Broadsheet Print & Digital Section of the Year

This award is for UK National Newspapers with printed and/or digital sections.

• Nominees should send PDFs or links to digital versions. Where not possible, five copies of each example can be sent to Sabera Sattar at APL Media Ltd, Unit 310 Highgate Studios, 53-79 Highgate Road, London NW5 1TL.
• Judges will be looking at national travel sections in their entirety. They’ll reward entries that demonstrate outstanding content, design, presentation, readability and photography.

This award is open to all consumer travel writers and journalists.

National Tabloid Print & Digital Section of the Year

• Judges will consider the national travel sections in their entirety. They will reward entries that demonstrate outstanding content, design, presentation, readability and photography.

Photography Award

This award is to recognise the outstanding work of published photographers in print and online for UK travel publications.

• Nominees should submit two features, each containing at least four photographs, published in print or online in the UK between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. Nominees should send PDFs or links to digital versions and, if relevant, details on how to access the features for free.
• Nominees should submit their best five photographs (total) from these features as JPEGs (.jpg) of no more than 4MB.
• The images will be judged as a body of work. Judges will be looking for compelling images, showing flair and originality and providing a sense of place. They’ll reward entries that tell a story about a particular destination, experience or event.
• Judges will expect the entries to remain respectful of the people and cultures being portrayed.

Regional Publication Feature of the Year

This award is for features published in a title that’s only available regionally. Features will also be accepted if the publication is published nationally but the majority of the content, including the travel section, varies regionally.

• Regional features submitted must have been published in print or online between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024. The published stories must be uploaded as separate text-only documents with the bylines deleted to enable anonymous judging. Please include the headline and sell as well as the body copy. Specialist Travel Writer of the Year – Sector

This award is open to professional travel writers and journalists who specialise in a particular travel topic. Examples of a travel topic could include cruise, safari, luxury or food travel.

• This entry requires a 100-word supporting statement outlining the writer’s unique contribution to travel media within the context of this category. Please state the specialist topic.
• Judges will be looking for a writer/journalist who shows creativity and originality. They’ll reward entries that demonstrate the author’s depth of knowledge and provide insight into their specialist topic.

Sustainability Travel Feature of the Year

• Judges will be looking for features about sustainable travel that are well-written, original, easy to read, well-researched and accurate throughout.
• They’ll reward entries that raise awareness of the issues and sustainable travel options; remain inspiring and informative, striking a good balance between providing readers with tips on how to travel sustainably while painting a colourful picture of the destination or experience discussed; and show awareness and consideration of the publication’s target audience.

Sustainability Travel Writer of the Year

This category is open to both consumer and trade travel journalists who’ve reported on sustainable travel.

• Judges will be looking for a travel journalist who’s consistently produced outstanding content about sustainable travel. Stories should be engaging, well-crafted and original in their approach.
• Judges will be expecting to see breadth of subject and depth of research in submissions.
• Judges are looking for media that raises awareness of the issues around sustainable travel while remaining inspiring and informative.

Trade Publication of the Year – Online

This award is open to travel trade publications that are updated or published on digital platforms on a regular basis.

• Websites should send the URL of their site and the URLs of three articles posted between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.

Another summer is almost here, and millions of Americans are getting excited for peak vacation season. In fact, they’ve been thinking about their 2024 trips and getaways since the beginning of the year when we teamed up with Talker Research to survey 1,000 Americans about their travel plans.

Not only did we uncover the most popular travel destinations (beaches rule, no surprise there), we also gained insights into the way Americans are planning their getaways, the type of accommodations they’re most interested in and how they’re going to get there. We also learned about Americans’ biggest travel fears and have some tips to avoid the most dreaded vacation disasters.

Read on to learn more about this year’s travel trends, along with tips on how to plan and pay for your next vacation.

Key findings

• Americans take 2.5 vacations per year.
• The average vacation in America costs $1,742.90.
• 30% of Americans plan to travel internationally in 2024.
• Beaches top the list of desired trips, with 62% of Americans saying they target beaches when planning vacations.
• To help defray the expense, 53% of Americans have used or plan to use their rewards from credit card rewards or travel loyalty programs to reduce their out-of-pocket costs for airfare and hotel expenses.

Expensive vacations don’t deter American travelers

There’s no such thing as a cheap vacation for most Americans. The average traveler spends $1,742.90 per vacation. Still, nearly half of respondents said they spend less than $1,500 on their trips, while 1 in 10 said they spend more than $3,500.

Vacation costs aren’t deterring most people from hitting the road, though. In fact, Americans travel an average of 2.9 times per year and most often they travel for leisure. Millennials are the group packing their bags most often, with an average of 3.4 getaways per year. 

The sweet spot for more than half of Americans is one to two times per year, while almost a third get away three to four times. One in 10 Americans leave town up to six times a year.

Almost two-thirds of Americans want to hit the beach

Most Americans love to spend their vacation time doing outdoorsy and cultural things, but nothing beats sun and sand. The most popular destination by far was the beach, with almost two-thirds (62%) of survey respondents naming it a preferred destination. Luckily, there is no lack of options when it comes to catching some waves and rays, with over 6,100 beaches along U.S. coasts.

Cities and cultural or historical locations were tied for second place, with 44% of respondents listing one of these among their preferred destinations. Visiting one of America’s 63 officially recognized national parks was just the ticket for 42% of respondents, while 40% said they wanted to see mountains. 

Over a third (39%) of survey respondents have their sights set on famous landmarks, such as Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty or the National Mall in D.C. Ultimate relaxation is on the horizon for the 30% of people looking to go on cruises this year and 29% who want the effortless luxury of an all-inclusive resort. 

With so many destinations across the country high on people’s agenda this year, it’s surprising that three in 10 travelers also plan to leave the U.S. and travel internationally in 2024. 

Travelers prefer hotels over private rentals

As for where Americans like to rest after their daily vacation adventures, home is where the room service is. Hotels, condos and resorts are a favorite among 78% of travelers who would choose them as a preferred lodging. Not only is there no bed-making or towel-washing required, but the average daily rate of staying in a hotel is still reasonable at $151.13, according to the most recent data from STR , a real estate data research and analytics company.

For travelers who like to vacation like a local or for larger groups that would find booking multiple hotel rooms uneconomical, renting a private property can be a better choice. There is no shortage of rental home options in the U.S. for the 44% of respondents who cited renting a homeshare or house as a regular choice. There were over 2.4 million vacation rental listings in 2023 with an overall daily rate of $308 according to data from AirDNA .

Of course, rather than paying for a place to rest your head, staying with family and friends is another option while traveling and a great way to save a few bucks. Forty-one percent of travelers listed this as one of their preferred accommodations. 

Camping and staying in hostels were less popular choices: 22% of survey respondents are prepared to pitch a tent on vacation, while just 11% of respondents would opt for a hostel. Few Americans are interested in leaving their house to take care of someone else’s, with house sitting only a preferred accommodation for 5% of people surveyed.

Americans’ biggest travel fear is the weather

Vacation planning is not without worry. With so much time and money invested to make every trip magical and Instagram-worthy, it’s only natural to have a few travel fears. Americans’ biggest travel fear is the weather, with 58% of respondents worried about inclement weather interrupting or ruining travel plans. Given that so many vacation activities are related to being outside, it’s a legit concern.

The second biggest concern is getting sick (44%) followed by fear of disappointment in the destination itself (30%). Many travelers are also worried about safety, including crime rates in the destination (28%), getting scammed (26%) and getting robbed (25%). 

The remaining fears are things that can be mitigated by taking advantage of travel protections offered by some travel credit cards and travel insurance . These include losing luggage (28%) — some credit cards will reimburse you for lost luggage or even baggage delays. Another is being late or missing travel accommodations (26%) — trip interruption insurance is another coverage that some credit cards offer.

Planes, trains or automobiles?

Most Americans like to go wheels up for their trips, with 47% choosing travel by plane as their preferred transportation method. According to the Bureau of Transportation, the average fare for a domestic flight in the U.S. (as of Q4 2023) was $384.85. This means that airfare alone can take up a good portion of a vacation budget.

As such, it’s no surprise that road trips — or travel by car — were nearly as popular, chosen by 44% of respondents. Even with average gas prices at $3.60 per gallon (as of May 2024), piling into the family car can be a cost effective way to get to your destination. 

Train travel was a distant third, with just 3% of people reporting they prefer to travel by rail.

Vacation planning habits revealed

One-third of Americans take nearly three weeks (2.9) to plan their trips, with about one-fifth booking almost five weeks (4.9) in advance. As part of their research in deciding where to go and what to do, 43% of people lean heavily on recommendations from friends and family.

A significant number of trip planners (32%) rely on online reviews, while fewer than 1 in 5 (19%) use a travel agent. Social media is also a source of travel inspiration with respondents turning to YouTube (17%), Instagram (9%), Facebook groups (8%) and TikTok (6%). Reading travel advice from travel blogs (15%), articles (13%) and magazines (10%) is also a significant part of the planning process.

As for what people consider the most important factors when planning a trip, 55% of people selected local food and drinks, while 54% value the best financial deal. Outdoor activities (46%) and cultural experiences (39%) were also high-ranking choices, while 35% of respondents build their trips around bucket list locations.

Solo travel vs. group travel

The majority of Americans prefer to travel for leisure with their significant other (41%) or immediate family (28%). But traveling solo is a preference for 15% of respondents.

Group travel is less popular, with just 10% of Americans saying they prefer travel with a small group. 

People who travel solo generally spend less time planning than those with travel companions (2.6 weeks vs. 2.9 weeks). They also book their trip an average of 4 weeks before compared to 5.1 weeks for couple/family travelers.

Preferred travel accommodations vary between solo and group travelers as well, with single people more likely to stay with family or friends:

Who Americans travel with affects more than just where they stay — it also influences how they get there. Single travelers are less inclined to drive by themselves, whereas going by car is often a money-saving option for groups.

Not surprisingly, solo travelers spend less per trip, though not that much less: $1,433.30 on average vs. $1,843.90 spent by couples and families.

How Americans use their travel rewards credit cards while traveling

Considering that 54% of travelers said finding the best financial deal has the biggest impact on their travel plans, using travel rewards credit cards strategically can play a big role. Leveraging the best travel credit cards can enhance the way you travel, provide insurance and protection, and help you save on the total cost of your trip. In fact, 53% of people said they have used or plan to use a credit card or travel rewards to reduce the cost of their trips.

Bolstering these findings, the Barclays 2024 Travel Rewards and Loyalty Report, which features data from a survey of 1,000 U.S. adult travelers by Wakefield Research, found that rewards programs will make all the difference when it comes to planning personal travel. The report found that personal travel is top of mind for many consumers this year and rewards programs will make all the difference.

“For the second year in a row, we found that U.S. travelers continue to highly value rewards points and loyalty programs,” said Doug Villone, head of cards and partnerships at Barclays US Consumer Bank. “Without rewards, 77% of travelers indicated they would have to make some sacrifices in how they travel. Many said they would need to give up comfort, as a third (33%) would have to downgrade their accommodations, and 28% would have to drive or take less convenient travel options.”

However, just 32% of Americans actually have a travel credit card as of the USA TODAY Blueprint-Talker Research survey date. Interestingly, men are significantly more likely to have a travel rewards card (39%) than women (25%). Men are also more likely to redeem travel rewards to defray the cost of travel (59%) than women (47%).

Tips for maximizing your credit card for your next trip

Here are some ways to maximize travel rewards credit cards:

• Kickstart your rewards balance with a welcome offer. Earning a sizable welcome offer on a new travel rewards card can be a great way to get a pile of points or miles to put toward your next vacation, especially if you redeem them for outsize value through the issuer’s travel portal.
• Choose a card that matches your spending style. Select a card that offers the highest rewards for the things you spend most on, whether it’s gas, groceries, dining or travel, or an elevated flat-rate across all spending.
• Don’t overspend to earn rewards. The key with rewards cards is paying off the balance in full each month so that you’re not paying interest. Once you revolve a balance, you are taking away from the rewards you earn. 
• Decide if the cost of a premium travel card is worth it for you. If you’re new to credit card rewards, a no-annual-fee travel card can offer good value. If you’re a frequent traveler with good credit habits, travel cards with annual fees offer higher levels of rewards and benefits.
• Consider airline or hotel cards only if you’re loyal to one brand. Cobranded airline credit cards and hotel cards help you earn points or miles tied to a specific airline or hotel chain’s loyalty programs. You may also get perks like in-flight discounts, free checked bags, late check-out and more. But if you prefer flexible redemption options, stick with a general rewards card.
• Ensure you don’t have foreign transaction fees. If you’re traveling abroad, leave credit cards with foreign transaction fees at home and only bring cards that won’t charge you extra for overseas spending.
• Understand the card benefits. Many travel cards offer protections like trip cancellation/interruption insurance, lost baggage coverage and travel accident insurance. This can help provide peace of mind and remove some of those common travel fears. In addition, some cards may offer a fee credit for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry .

This online survey of 1,000 Americans who plan to travel for leisure in 2024 was commissioned by USA TODAY Blueprint and conducted by market research company Talker Research, in accordance with the Market Research Society’s code of conduct. Data was collected from Jan. 24 to Jan. 30, 2024. The margin of error is +/- 3.1 points with 95% confidence. These cards provide the greatest value to frequent travelers, who can redeem points or miles for flights, hotel reservations, car rentals and more. Some come with perks such as rental car insurance and access to airport lounges. Readers judged travel rewards credit cards on the strength of customer service, how likely they would be to recommend the card to others and how satisfied they are overall with the card.

Outstanding for:

• Overall satisfaction

This card handily beats the competition for delivering many of the benefits you would expect from a premium travel card but with a relatively low annual fee of $395. “The annual fee pays for itself if you do almost any travel,” wrote one reader.

Earn 10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel , five miles per dollar for flights reserved through Capital One Travel, and two miles per dollar on all other spending. Cardholders also get a $300 annual credit toward travel bookings through Capital One, a bonus of 10,000 miles on each yearly account anniversary, reimbursement of the application fee for expedited airport security screening with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and free access to three lounge networks: Capital One’s airport lounges, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

This travel card wins honors for each aspect readers judged. One respondent wrote that it offers the “best benefits, like primary car rental insurance and travel insurance.”

Chase Sapphire Preferred, which has a $95 annual fee, offers five Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel that you purchase through Chase Travel (two points per dollar on other travel spending); three points per dollar on restaurants, online grocery purchases and select streaming services; and one point per dollar on other spending. You can transfer points to the card’s travel transfer partners, including Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt. Or redeem points for travel bookings through Chase, among other options.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

Chase’s premium credit card, which charges a $550 annual fee, provides benefits including a $300 yearly statement credit for travel purchases, membership with Priority Pass Select for airport lounge access, credit of up to $100 every four years for a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS application fee, and perks such as room upgrades at certain luxury hotels. “This card pays for itself,” one reader says.

Cardholders also get 10 points per dollar spent on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards portal and five points per dollar for flights booked through Chase Travel . These rewards kick in after you’ve spent $300 on travel. You also earn three points per dollar at restaurants and on other travel worldwide. As with Sapphire Preferred, you can transfer points to travel partners or redeem them for travel bookings.

American Express Gold

Earn four points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 spent per year; one point per dollar thereafter). Cardholders also earn four points per dollar on dining or food delivery, three points on air travel, and one point on other spending. Cardholders, who pay a $95 annual fee, get five miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and two miles per dollar on all other spending. Redeem miles for statement credits on travel purchases or travel bookings through Capital One, or transfer miles to partner airline and hotel loyalty programs.

The Platinum Card from American Express

Readers especially appreciate this card for its excellent customer service. “You can always talk to a human who can help,” says one respondent. “In 30+ years, I have found that American Express always has my back!” says another.

Frequent travelers can offset the card’s $695 annual fee by taking advantage of its bountiful perks and valuable points structure. Travelers enjoy access to a range of airport lounges, including Amex’s Centurion lounges as well as those in the Airspace, Delta Sky Club, Escape, Plaza Premium and Priority Pass Select networks. “The lounge access is hard to beat,” says one survey respondent. 

You get up to $100 in application-fee reimbursement for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, too. Plus, get yearly credits of up to $200 for incidental fees with one airline you choose, $200 for select hotel bookings through Amex, and $189 for membership with the CLEAR airport security screening program.

Cardholders earn extra points on various purchases, including five Membership Rewards points per dollar for flights booked with airlines or through Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 spent per year) and on prepaid hotel bookings through Amex. Exchanging points for flights booked through Amex or for certain gift cards are among the most favorable redemption options.
