THE WIGGLES AND FRIENDS PRESENT “REWIGGLED”

2021 has been a massive year for The Wiggles, despite the challenges that the pandemic has continued to pose. The band celebrated their 30th anniversary; a remarkable milestone that has seen them entertain millions of families and generations of fans around the world.

They completed a massive tour of Australia and New Zealand, and released several albums including a career-spanning Greatest Hits collection,  We’re All Fruit Salad! , and the ARIA-nominated  Lullabies with Love . Most recently, The Wiggles were named as the second-most streamed local artist on Spotify in Australia this year, across all genres.

In an exciting development, the long-standing Wiggles lineup of  Anthony Field ,  Simon Pryce  and  Lachy Gillespie  was expanded to include new members  Tsehay Hawkins ,  Evie Ferris ,  John Pearce  and  Kelly Hamilton.  It was also announced that  Emma Watkins  will depart The Wiggles at the end of the year.

Now, the current Wiggles lineup has joined forces with the ‘OG Wiggles’ ( Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt  and  Greg Page ), and teamed up with some very special musical friends, for an ambitious and expansive recording project,  ReWiggled .

wiggles tour 2022 qld

ReWiggled  is a double album, comprised of two distinct halves, which celebrate both the enduring nature of The Wiggles’ songbook, and also The Wiggles’ own lifetime love of music.

Side One of the album   sees some of Australia’s top musicians paying tribute to The Wiggles, honouring the profound and unique influence the band has had over generations of young music fans. Featuring classic Wiggles songs reimagined by artists including  Spacey Jane ,  DZ Deathrays ,  The Chats ,  Stella Donnelly ,  San Cisco ,  Emily Wurramara ,  Polish Club ,  Dami Im ,  Donny Benet ,  Emma Donovan and The Putbacks ,  Custard ,  Melbourne Ska Orchestra ,  Luca Brasi , and more.

Following on from The Wiggles’ groundbreaking appearance on triple j’s Like A Version (covering  Tame Impala ’s ‘Elephant’) – and in response to overwhelming audience demand, so popular was their offering – the band have decided to record a full length collection of covers, filled with equally unforgettable and impressive renditions of some of their favourite songs.

Side Two of  ReWiggled  features “wigglified” versions of hits originally performed by  AC/DC ,  Queen, Rihanna ,  James Brown ,  The Chats,   Fatboy Slim,  and many more.

The  ReWiggled  double album will be released on March 11, 2022. However, today sees the release of the first taste of the collection, the 5 track  ReWiggled EP .

This sneak peek sampler sees beloved Perth indie rock maestros  Spacey Jane  deliver a sparkling, joyous version of  ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. (My Favourite Dinosaur) ’, in what is a major highlight of the album.

Queensland shed rock heroes  The Chats  put their own unmistakable garage punk stamp all over  ‘Can You (Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?)’ .

And The Wiggles have returned the favour directly, with their exhilarating yet Wiggly take on The Chats’ modern Aussie Rock classic  ‘Pub Feed’ .

But perhaps the wildest moment on the EP sees The Wiggles tackle one of the most iconic songs of all time – Queen’s  ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’  – in a performance that proves to be an absolute musical tour de force.

On their involvement with  ReWiggled , Spacey Jane commented:

“There were plenty of reasons ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. (My Favourite Dinosaur)’ was the track we chose! First and foremost, we’ve accidentally stumbled upon Peppa’s insanely good Dorothy impressions, and the ad-libs really gave her space to shine. It was easy to re-interpret the song and comfortably make it sound like something we’d release, and we had an absolute blast putting it together in the studio. Honestly, wouldn’t be surprised if we play it live at least once or twice…”

Wiggles founder and Blue Wiggle Anthony Field, remarked:

“It’s been really enjoyable, and also so humbling, hearing all these wonderful artists doing their versions of Wiggles songs – they’re all so very talented. And it’s been a real thrill to get back in the studio together with all the Wiggles – the current members and the OG’s – to record some cover versions of our own. We had so much fun doing ‘Elephant’ for Like A Version, and now we’re really excited for people to hear what we’ve cooked up for this record!”

The original cast of The Wiggles are officially reuniting for an adults-only Australian tour next year.

Anthony Field – who is still a member of The Wiggles – is teaming up with his OG gang including Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt and Greg Page for a national arena tour from February to May.

“All of those children who loved The Wiggles in the ‘90s are now adults who love the nostalgia and fun from that time in their lives,” Fatt told Sunrise.

“This night is for the grown-ups and is a chance to bring back some of that genuine, high-spirited liveliness again.

“We can’t wait to relive those childhood memories and dance the night away to some of the favourite old-school tunes.”

The original Wiggles are reuniting for a national tour.

The founding members of The Wiggles discovered they were still a hot commodity in showbiz after hosting a reunion show in January last year to raise funds for bushfire relief, with tickets selling out within five minutes.

Their performance was marred after Page, the original Yellow Wiggle, collapsed during the group’s sold-out show in Sydney . However, he said he was feeling good and ready to hit the stage again.

“I may have to pull back a bit on the dancing this time around though,” Page joked on the Channel 7 breakfast show.

The concert marked the first time the iconic band had played together since 2012.

The Wiggles ‘ original line-up have announced a seven-date run of arena shows for 2022, marking their first full-scale tour for 18+ audiences.

The tour is set to kick off in Darwin on Saturday February 12, before the quartet – alongside a full cast of classic characters such as Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur and Wags the Dog – hit stages in Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Tickets will be available from The Wiggles’ website from 4pm local time this Friday (October 22).

It’ll be the third time the group have performed together since their initial disbanding in 2012, with Murray Cook (the original Red Wiggle), Jeff Fatt (Purple) and Greg Page (Yellow) having previously joined Anthony Field – who has maintained his role as the Blue Wiggle since 1991 – for standalone charity shows in 2016 and 2020.

“All of those children who loved The Wiggles in the ‘90s are now adults who love the nostalgia and fun from that time in their lives,” Fatt said in a press release. “This night is for the grown-ups and is a chance to bring back some of that genuine, high-spirited liveliness again. We can’t wait to relive those childhood memories and dance the night away to some of the favourite old-school tunes.”

Cook added: “It will be The Wiggles as you remember and love them, but we’ll all have a bit more grey hair… And there’s a bar. We’ll be playing all your favourite songs, and put on a show you won’t forget.”

Each show will feature a different support act, with more details for those due to be announced in the coming months. Polish Club and DZ Deathrays are amongst the acts set to join the festivities.

Cook and Fatt retired from the group in 2012, while Page stepped away in 2006, though he returned briefly from 2012 to 2013. Their first reunion with Field – a pub show in Sydney – took place in 2016, with the band raising money for Soldier On Australia.

They reunited again for a pair of shows last January , this time endeavouring to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross and WIRES, following the bushfires that devastated Australia throughout the summer of 2019 and 2020. They pulled in over $150,000 between the two shows , however Page was not present at the second one as he’d suffered a cardiac arrest onstage during the first .

Joking about the incident in today’s (October 19) announcement, Page said he “may have to pull back a bit on the dancing this time around”.

Also announced today was the departure of Emma Watkins, who’d performed as the Yellow Wiggle since 2010. Her role will be filled by the 15-year-old Tsehay Hawkins, who’d previously joined the group back in August for the webseries Fruit Salad TV .

In a video statement posted to The Wiggles’ Instagram, Watkins said: “Like many people around the world, the pandemic has given me time to reflect on what is important in life. For me, that means spending more time at home, something that I didn’t realise I was missing out on being away eight months of the year on tour.

“I’m really looking forward to devoting more time and energy to focus on completing my PhD which incorporates my ongoing passion for sign language, dance and film editing, and to having more time to work with the deaf community.”

Back in March, The Wiggles took to the triple j studios for their first-ever Like A Version performance , delivering a mashup of Tame Impala ’s ‘Elephant’ and their own ‘Fruit Salad’.

The Wiggles

Following a sold-out arena tour of the country earlier this year, The Wiggles are about to make Australian history as the first band to perform two arena tours in one year.

Throughout November and December, they’ll be swapping their Big Red Car for a Big Red Sleigh as they bring The Wiggles Holiday Party Big Show around Australia.

After three decades, this end-of-year show has become a beloved tradition for families around the country. Anthony, Simon, Lachy and Tsehay will be joined by John, Caterina, Evie and new Blue Wiggles Lucia, following in the hallowed footsteps of her father.

The tour will begin in Canberra on Thursday, November 10th and finish with a huge Sydney show on Saturday, December 17th (see full dates below). Tickets go on sale this Friday, September 2nd at 10am local time.

“The lead up to Christmas is the most magical time of year, and we’re so excited for everyone to experience our Holiday Party Big Show,” Anthony said. “There are so many surprises, plus a special appearance by Santa, and we’re going to make it snow! It’s going to be so much fun.

The original Blue Wiggle also shared his excitement about the prospect of sharing the stage with his daughter. “I’m also so happy that we’ll be joined by my daughter Lucia, who is following in my footsteps and wearing the blue skivvy. Lucia is a trained dancer who has also been dancing with The Wiggles since she was a child. She did such an amazing job dancing on our last tour – she was born to be a Wiggle.”

In the meantime, you can find out how the band’s first arena tour of the year went by getting a copy of the new issue of Rolling Stone AU/NZ , set to hit newsstands on Monday, September 5th, which The Wiggles were the glam cover stars for. The September-November edition features unprecedented access to their recent Australia arena tour and to their Hot Potato Studios in Sydney, and also comes with a Wiggles-themed adult colouring book (subscribe here ).

Queensland mining town Moranbah brings in international staff to help solve childcare crisis

At a childcare centre in the centre of Moranbah, a small town in the heart of Queensland's coal country, mornings are a hive of activity as busy parents drop off children before heading to work.

It may look like any other childcare centre, but at Simply Sunshine things are a little different.

"We have teachers like me from Zimbabwe, we have teachers from the Philippines … so having teachers from different countries, they come with their experiences, and also different cultures," employee Rabeca Denhere said.

A woman sits at the bottom of a slide on a playground with a young girl on her lap

Ms Denhere moved to Moranbah from Oman after growing up in Zimbabwe, and said educators at the centre were opening the door to a whole new world for the kids.

She is one of 27 international childcare workers who now call Moranbah home, and who arrived in town in response to the town's long-standing childcare crisis.

Towns like Moranbah are far from a tourist destination, and with a population of fewer than 10,000, it has been difficult to entice Australian workers to move there.

It left many families without an option for childcare, according to Jodi Schnack, who manages the town's other childcare facility, Moranbah Early Learning Centre.

A woman stands behind a desk with her arms crossed on top of it. The word "Moranbah" is visible on a sign on the desk

But thanks to the international influx, Ms Schnack said her centre had been able to increase the number of places it offers from 70 to 102.

"It means we get to make those phone calls to say that we have a spot for your child," she said.

"We have mums that will cry because they've been on the waitlist for two years.

"It means they can get back in the workforce."

Back at the nearby Simply Sunshine early education centre and kindergarten, director Amanda Stephan said it had gone from servicing 80 families per week to 120.

"So that's now gone from 50 to 60 per cent occupancy that we've been able to cater for over the last 12 months to around 70 to 80 per cent. And in the very near future, we should be able to increase to 90 per cent," she said.

So how is it happening?

It's all because of an innovative pilot program launched in central Queensland's Isaac region, which aimed to attract more childcare workers to local towns.

The project is being run by the Childcare Leadership Alliance, which was founded in 2022 to address the childcare challenges unique to regional communities.

The organisation was pulled together with support and funding from mining giant BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, with consultant Astute Early Years Specialists appointed as the lead project delivery partner.

With staff shortages identified as a key issue facing the childcare sector, the alliance launched a campaign targeting international workers.

Two towns were selected for a pilot project — Moranbah and nearby Dysart — to trial strategies to address these shortages.

A campaign aimed at international workers saw the highest success rate, garnering expressions of interest from more than 130 educators globally.

And the workers signing up for it say it has changed their lives too.

A 'better life'

Marisel Ronquillo said it was her dream of a "better life" that prompted her and her husband to pack up and relocate from the Philippines.

But moving to Australia back in 2018 involved a big sacrifice — they initially had to leave their 10-year-old daughter behind.

It's a separation that Miguela Ronquillo, who is now 16 years old, remembers well.

A mother and daughter sitting on a couch holding mugs, the mother's arm is around the daughter's shoulders

"It was hard at first because I didn't really want them to go away," she said.

"I thought they would come back for me because that's what they promised.

"And then the [COVID-19] pandemic came and we couldn't see each other for a long time. And it was really hard for me."

Ms Ronquillo gained a diploma in childcare after arriving in Australia.

Now, after she joined the pilot program in Moranbah, her visa has allowed her to bring Miguela to Australia, reuiniting the family.

"I'm so lucky I found this job. We're here and we're complete and I love Moranbah so much," Ms Ronquillo said.

Another childcare import, Jessica Boshoff, relocated from South Africa.

She also came to Australia in search of "better opportunities for [her] children".

"There's a lot of crime unfortunately [in South Africa], so your premises, your housing, is not open and you have everything behind six-foot walls," she said.

"But it's nice [in Australia] that you're able to have that freedom and children are safe, and they can live life the way they're supposed to."

Could this solution work for the rest of Australia?

Managing director of Astute Early Years Specialists, and Childcare Leadership Alliance project manager, Mel Comerford thinks international recruitment could "go a long way towards solving the workforce issues in childcare".

"We need more funding because it is a solution that's going to work for everybody — we just need the help for us to get the solutions into place."

She said it cost approximately $800,000 to bring 25 people into Moranbah, and more financial support is needed to continue this work and expand it into other locations.

"The Department of Immigration fees are not cheap. We would love support from the Queensland government to fund that," she said.

"In Victoria, the government's paying for all of the Department of Immigration fees for early childhood services to do this."

She also said more needed to be done to address the national housing shortage for this solution to be fully viable.

"We can bring people here but if they haven't got a safe, secure place to live then that's going to be a real challenge."
