CNN have rereleased a list of the world’s 50 best foods chosen by their readers and some of the inclusions might surprise you.
CNN themselves note the lack of French dishes to make their list, which was compiled by over 35,00 votes from food lovers back in 2011. The companys say it was recently reformatted and republished for 2017.
Asia smashes the list with the top 10 dishes all coming from across the continent.
Number one on the list? In 10 guesses you would never get it, with beef Rendang from Indonesia taking the top spot. In fact Indonesia came in strong, also taking second position with Nasi goreng.
Less surprisingly, Sushi came in third on the list. The italians might not be too happy with number 47, however.

Also again, tom yam kung ranked eighth and som tam papaya salad placed at 46th.
Bangkok, 23 April, 2021 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that CNN Travel has once again ranked Thai Massaman curry as the No. 1 dish in the world’s 50 best foods list, along with Tom Yam Kung (Shrimp Spicy Soup) in eighth place and Som Tam papaya salad , which placed at 46 th .
While travel to Thailand is limited at this time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CNN Travel’s listing of three Thai dishes in the world’s 50 best foods is a testament to the already solid reputation of Thai cuisine that is increasingly perceived as a world-class culinary experience.
The latest CNN Travel World’s 50 Best Foods list was updated in April 2021, on the original article that was previously published in 2011, then reformatted, updated and republished in 2017, and updated since then.
In this latest update published on 14 April, 2021, CNN Travel staff once again said that they had scoured the planet for what they thought were 50 of the most delicious foods ever created.
The three Thai dishes were once again ranked and described as follows:
Massaman curry, 1 st place: One more reason to visit Thailand.
Emphatically the king of curries, and perhaps the king of all foods. Spicy, coconutty, sweet and savoury. Even the packet sauce you buy from the supermarket can make the most delinquent of cooks look like a Michelin potential. Thankfully, someone invented rice, with which diners can mop up the last drizzles of curry sauce. “The Land of Smiles” isn’t just a marketing catchline. It’s a result of being born in a land where the world’s most delicious food is sold on nearly every street corner.
Tom Yam Kung, 8 th place: A must-eat Thai dish.
This best food Thai masterpiece teems with shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves. Usually loaded with coconut milk and cream, the hearty soup unifies a host of favourite Thai tastes: sour, salty, spicy and sweet. Best of all is the price: cheap.
Som Tam papaya salad, 46 th place: A traditional Thai dish you can’t resist.
To prepare Thailand’s most famous salad, pound garlic and chillies with a mortar and pestle. Toss in tamarind juice, fish sauce, peanuts, dried shrimp, tomatoes, lime juice, sugar cane paste, string beans, and a handful of grated green papaya. Grab a side of sticky rice. Variations include those made with crab (som tam pu) and fermented fish sauce (som tam pla ra), but none matches the flavour and simple beauty of the original.

The CNN Travel World’s ’50 Best Foods’ had no less than four dishes in the Top 10 alone. Lightly prepared with strong aromatics and cutting-edge spices, these dishes are sometimes described as the ‘complicated juggling of disparate components to create a harmonious finish’. So, if you want to know your Toms from your Tams, Yams from your Pads, here’s your chance. Don’t get Thai’d up in knots, come and enjoy a day of fun before preparing your own communal lunch to enjoy with your new friends. These courses are designed to be relaxed, informative and fun.
EXPECT RECIPES LIKE: + Thai Rice Preparation + Thai Curry Pastes and Bases (Massaman/Panang/Green Curry/Yellow Curry) + Fast Thai Dishes (Pad Thai/Pad Ka Prow/Tom Kha/Tom Yum) + Thai Aromatics & Vegetables Exact recipes for this class will vary by season.
Suitable for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dietaries. WHERE: Blackfriars Cookery School
TIMES: 9.30am to 4.30pm
COST: £160 per person which includes refreshments throughout the day, a communal lunch with wine, regional beverage and coffee in the Cookery School, apron and recipes to take home. Places are only confirmed once paid in full and are non-refundable or transferable.
WHAT TO WEAR: Aprons are provided though please arrive in comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit messy.
