The concert hall exploded in popularity in the '80s and is applauded for booking Black performers during an era of heavily segregated music scenes.

Conveniently located at the heart of downtown Minneapolis, concertgoers can book a ticket and catch a performance where countless big names have taken the stage. Painted stars decorate the entrance, commemorating performances by Paul Simon, The Ramones, and Lizzo, but most significantly, First Avenue was the main venue for hometown star Prince.

11 Best Time To Visit Minneapolis

Minneapolis is worth visiting all year round; however, the best time for travelers is between mid-June and early September , when the weather is comfortably warm and ideal for partaking in the many outdoor activities, including venturing into the lakes.

Summer (June to August) is the peak tourism season in Minneapolis, highlighted by various festivals and farmers' markets. The atmosphere is inviting for diners and outdoor explorers, and visitors can always cool off in a wading pool when the temperatures get unbearable.

Another pleasant time for tourists in Minneapolis is early fall (September to November) , when the foliage starts changing color, transforming the city into a natural work of art. This is an excellent time to explore the city in the cool weather.

A common joke in Minneapolis is that visitors can experience the four seasons in a day, so pack a raincoat and enough warm clothing, even for summer visits.

Winters (December to February) in the city can be daunting for most visitors as temperatures dip into the negatives, rarely rising above freezing point. The weather is marked by plenty of snowfall, and the icy roads and sidewalks make it risky to explore the area on foot. Nevertheless, during the December holidays, there is still ample fun available to skiers, snowshoers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. Plus, airlines and hotels offer great deals to travelers.

The worst time to visit Minneapolis is between January and May ! The weather is still frosty, with cold surges and unexpected snowstorms. Most tourists have departed, and locals choose to stay indoors while waiting for the temperatures to start warming up in late spring.

12 Best Ways To Get Around Minneapolis

Guests have multiple options to move around Minneapolis while discovering its famous sights and sounds. The most convenient is by car as it offers quick access to the suburbs and numerous regional lakes worth seeing. Alternatively, plan a day trip to visit St. Paul, the other half of the Twin Cities .

  • Car rental rates start from $37 per day, depending on the size and type of vehicle.

Meanwhile, catching a taxi will be more suitable when visiting downtown as traffic can be quite a hassle.

Minneapolis also has a reliable public transit system that allows tourists to visit different sites and attractions. The Metro Transit operates light rail and bus routes from downtown to the Bloomington neighborhood and its twin city.

  • Regular fares range between $2 and $3.25, depending on the time of day. Those downtown only pay 50¢ in the Downtown Zone.

Another excellent option for tourists who want to slow down the pace and soak in the sights is walking. Minneapolis has all the hallmarks of a walkable city , including a vibrant downtown, a historic district, public safety, and pedestrian-designated pathways.

The Skyway System features a set of enclosed heated walkways guests can follow to navigate the hustle and bustle of the downtown area more comfortably.

Lastly, Downtown East is one of the most bikeable neighborhoods in Minneapolis . With a 93 Bike Score , visitors can rent a bike to discover the community leisurely and conveniently.

There are also multiple cycling paths in town and biking trails in the many parks that will be excellent for biking.

  • Hourly rentals start from $20 per hour to $50-100 per day, depending on the style and brand of bike.

Secure a bike with a good padlock when left unattended, just in case.

The cathedral welcomes more than 200,000 travelers annually to tour the premises, and it also holds religious services for worshippers throughout the week.

Weisman Art Museum Weisman Art Museum free

Designed by avant-garde architect Frank Gehry, the Weisman Art Museum is the place to go for a glimpse at some of America's most renowned contemporary art. Here, you'll find pieces by such famed artists as Georgia O'Keeffe and Roy Lichtenstein, not to mention an impressive collection of ceramics and Korean furniture. This museum also hosts notable touring exhibits.

Some recent travelers found the museum too small, but others enjoyed its manageable size. A few reviewers said the collection wasn't worth making a special trip, but those who did stop by were impressed with its unique facade and scenic setting on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Minnesota Zoo Minnesota Zoo

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Allow plenty of time to explore both the indoor and outdoor trails. Watch for "Adult Nights" on the calendar with musical performances, adult beverages and themed programs. Plus, the zoo unveiled an elevated outdoor walking trail in summer 2023. –  Rachael Hood, Senior Editor

Situated about 30 minutes south of downtown Minneapolis in the suburb of Apple Valley, this 485-acre complex shelters an impressive menagerie of nearly 5,000 animals – from camels to flamingos – as well as an Imax theater. Recent visitors said the zoo is a great family activity, no matter the weather. If you're interested in learning more about the animals native to the state, plan on visiting the Medtronic Minnesota Trail exhibit, which includes wolverines, coyotes and the American black bear. You'll find more exotic species in the zoo's Discovery Bay: United Healthcare Marine Education Center, which includes the 218,000-gallon Shark Reef exhibit. Along with the animals, the zoo also boasts its own hand-crafted Conservation Carousel (rides are not included in zoo admission).

Minneapolis Skyway System Minneapolis Skyway System free

If you're taking a trip to Minneapolis, chances are you will find yourself trekking through the Skyway System at some point during your vacation. For locals, this 9.5-mile system of elevated pathways covering 80 city blocks of downtown Minneapolis is simply a part of the daily commute. But for visitors, it can be considered an attraction in itself. In fact, the skyway is the largest contiguous network of enclosed, second-level bridges on Earth, and some sections date back to the 1960s.

Many travelers assume the skyway was developed to protect pedestrians from Minneapolis' brutal winters. While this is a definite perk for those visiting in the colder months, the system actually came about to solve the problem of overpopulated sidewalks along the streets below. Today, the skyway connects bars, restaurants, hotels, offices, retail stores, theaters, sports arenas, art exhibits and more. Roughly 140 eateries are accessible via the skyway, so you will have plenty of dining options when hunger strikes.

Historic Fort Snelling Historic Fort Snelling

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Check out the new visitor center, then head to the fort where costumed guides provide insight into life here in the early days of Minnesota. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor

Established in the early 19th century as a frontier outpost, Fort Snelling is the oldest structure in Minnesota. Its perch over the converging point of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers allowed it to successfully control trade routes in the Upper Mississippi Valley. Today, Fort Snelling acts as a living history museum, with costumed tour guides offering ample information on its past. There are also exhibits detailing the site's history within the visitor center and "activity centers" scattered across the site that help visitors learn more about the Dakota homeland, immigration, soldiers and more. During the summer, the fort hosts numerous history-themed events, including demonstrations, competitions and youth programs.

Looking for adventure? These are the best countries for it, per U.S. News & World Report

Where in the world should you travel?

It depends on what you’re looking for: beautiful scenery , friendly locals , great food .

Those were all factors U.S. News & World Report weighed for their Best Countries rankings, released Tuesday.

This year’s rankings are based on the perceptions of nearly 17,000 survey respondents around the world, on topics running the gamut from military strength to public education.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

“It's mostly like an association game,” said U.S. News Managing Editor of Government Rankings Gary Emerling, who oversaw the project. “Like, I think this is a friendly country.  I know Canada is friendly, so I'm going to choose Canada for this one, not to stereotype."

Make your money go further: These countries may be the best places to visit

Among the lists of superlatives spawned by the study, three European countries – Italy, Spain and France – topped the best countries for tourism.

Tourism itself is a subcategory under the larger umbrella of adventure.

Best countries for adventure

Other attributes contributing to this year’s adventure rankings include perceived friendliness, fun , pleasant climate , scenery and sexiness , yes sexiness.

U.S. News & World report separately ranked the best countries for solo travel.

Best countries for travel alone

“Within that, there's an attribute where we look at how safe countries are perceived as , and I think that's important for travelers to look at,” Emerling said. “It's kind of what you would think – the Nordic countries, Switzerland on that list – but then, similar to ... the friendly attribute, we have one called unapproachable .”

Iran, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Uzbekistan and Russia were seen as the five most unapproachable countries, based on survey responses. Emerling noted current events can impact perceptions.

“Israel has fallen like 24 spots as far as being seen as good for tourism,” he said. “I think it would be fair to assume folks are connecting the current situation in Gaza there.”

The 2024 survey of nearly 17,000 people from across the globe was conducted from March 22 to May 23. U.S. News & World Report says they consulted on the study and model used to score and rank countries, which were developed by global marketing and communications services company WPP and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania professor David Reibstein.

EU vows retaliation if Hungary sends buses of migrants to Brussels

A man speaks at a microphone in front of yellow buses while a policeman stands nearby

Hungary’s threat to send a bus convoy of migrants to Brussels in protest against European Union policies is unacceptable and would prompt EU retaliatory action, the bloc’s powerful executive branch warned on Tuesday.

Hungary’s anti-immigrant government signaled last week that it is serious about giving migrants free one-way travel to Brussels, a measure meant to pressure the European Commission into dropping heavy fines imposed on Hungary over its restrictive asylum policies.

In June, the European Court of Justice ordered Hungary to pay a fine of 200 million euros — about $211 million — for persistently breaking the bloc’s asylum rules, and an additional 1 million euros per day until it brings policies into line with EU law. The government in Budapest is delaying payment.

Hungary's State Secretary Bence Rétvári, right, and National Deputy Chief of Police Janos Kuczik hold a joint press conference at the bus station of Nepliget, Budapest, Hungary, Friday Sept. 6, 2024, backdropped by a row of passenger buses with illuminated signs reading “Röszke-Brussels” — a route that would take migrants from Hungary's southern border with Serbia to the EU headquarters in Belgium. Belgium’s top migration official criticizes Hungary for threatening to bus migrants to Brussels

Belgium’s top migration official criticized Hungary for threatening to send a bus convoy of migrants to Brussels in retaliation against European Union policies.

Sept. 9, 2024

Asked about Hungary’s plan, commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said: “It is unacceptable.”

“This action, if carried out, would be in clear breach of the EU law, but also it would be in clear breach of the principle of sincere and loyal cooperation, but also of mutual trust,” Hipper told reporters. The commission has its headquarters in the Belgian capital.

“In addition, it will also undermine the security of the Schengen area as a whole,” she said, in reference to the 29-country zone where people and goods can cross borders without document checks.

The commission is in contact with the Hungarian authorities and those in any neighboring countries that the convoy might pass through should it leave.

Traveling overland, the buses would have to cross either France or Germany — which along with Luxembourg and the Netherlands surround Belgium — and possibly other EU member countries like Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia or the Czech Republic.

Hungary says it will provide free tickets to Brussels for migrants trying to enter the EU

Hungary’s anti-immigration government says it is prepared to provide free one-way tickets to Brussels for migrants and asylum seekers.

Aug. 22, 2024

“We are also standing ready to use all our powers under the treaty to ensure that EU law is respected,” Hipper said. But the most effective step would certainly be for other member countries to stop the buses by reintroducing border checks.

Hipper did not elaborate on what action the commission is able to take, but it is difficult to see what kind of punishment might dissuade Hungary given that the country is already defying a court order to pay 200 million euros in fines.

On Monday, Belgium’s top migration official, Nicole de Moor, said Hungary’s threat “undermines solidarity and cooperation within the Union.” Her office said the Belgian authorities will “not provide access” to any such migrant arrivals.
