The calculator is a helpful tool in knowing what percent of US tourist visas get approved and what is the rejection rate of a B1 visa. These numbers are designed for educational purposes only and should not be relied upon for your results. Many other factors may play into your approval odds that are not taken into account by this calculator, including your visa interview.

For your information, of B1/B2 applicants from are refused or denied.

What are the chances of getting a B1 or B2 visa?

There are many factors that can improve or hamper your odds of approval for a  U.S. tourist visa . The primary reason for the interview is to convince the consular officer that you have no intention of overstaying or immigrating permanently to the U.S.

Factors that may affect your odds of approval:

Employment status & verifiable income.

Being unemployed, or employed for a short period of time at a job may hurt your case. Having a long standing career in your home country, and working for the same company for more than five years may help your case.

Family Obligation & Family in the USA

If you are single without dependents, or have children that don't live with you, and you want to travel to the U.S., the officer may think you don't have enough reason to return to your country. However, having kids or dependent family members in your country is a great sign of strong ties. If you have family in the U.S., this could be a sign that you have a reason to stay in the U.S. and this may work against you. If you have a fiancé or a spouse in the U.S., your odds are lower, and you should probably opt for the  fiance visa  or  spousal visa .

Property & Asset Ownership

Owing assets and especially property or businesses in your home country are a great sign of strong ties.

If you've traveled to other countries before, especially first-world countries and did not overstay your visa and returned to your country, this is a sign that you are trusted to follow the visa process. If you have traveled to a first-world country with strict immigration policies and didn't  overstay your visa , this goes a long way to prove you are trustworthy.

Length of Trip

If you request to stay in the United States for a long period of time in your application, it may be a red flag that you intend to figure out a way to immigrate. If you request a more realistic time span, that is specific to the purpose of your trip, this is a point in your favor. For example, if you are traveling to a 5-day conference, requesting a trip for 3 months may look fishy. But if you only request 2 weeks, it makes more sense for that situation and is consistent with someone traveling for that purpose.

If you have no means to pay for the trip, and are relying on only a friend or family member to pay, this could count against you. However, if you have the means to pay yourself or if your company is paying for the trip, this signals that you won't become a burden to the state.

If you are heavily involved in your community, especially in a way that the organization would be deficient if you didn't return, this could help signal a strong tie. If you are a full-time college student enrolled in your country, this is good evidence you have an intention to return.

Of course, if you've been previously approved for a  B1/B2 visa  and entered the U.S., and returned to your country, this works in your favor. It proves you can be trusted  not to overstay. However, if you previously overstayed, your odds of approval are lower.

The more specific and precise your purpose of travel is, the better your case for a travel visa. . If you are attending a specific conference in your profession, or attending a wedding, or watching an event like a concert or solar eclipse, or anything else that is very specific and has a convincing reason to be in a specific place at a specific time, this builds a better case.

Denial Rates by Country

What is the rejection rate of a B1 or B2 visa based on your home country? The following table is straight from  NVC statistics  showing the actual numbers for 2022. The country doesn't necessarily play a role in your likelihood of approval or denial. What's more likely is that people in high denial countries tend to not be qualified. Use our approval odds calculator to determine if you may have a good shot at approval or not.

How to get USA visit visa from Pakistan | Guide

To initiate your application for a US visit visa from Pakistan, you’ll begin by filling out the online form known as D-160 and making the necessary payments. Following this, you’ll schedule an appointment at the embassy for an interview. Drawing from my personal experience with a Pakistani passport, I’ll guide you through each step of the process.

For those seeking a tourist visa, you’ll be required to furnish evidence of your travel arrangements. This includes a comprehensive itinerary outlining your intended journey to the United States, which will be requested when you start the DS-160 form.

Applying for a US visit Visa from Pakistan: A Step-by-Step Guide

Let walk you through the step-by-step process of obtaining a US visa in Pakistan. To kickstart the procedure, head over to a designated website and complete the D-160 form online. Following this, navigate to another website to register yourself.

Click here to schedule an appointment

Once you’ve filled out the D-160 form on the first website, proceed to register for an appointment on the second site. This platform will generate a fee slip for you, which you’ll then take to a nearby Allied Bank branch to settle the necessary visa fee. Following payment, you’ll be able to secure an appointment after a day’s time. On the day of your appointment, you’ll undergo an interview with a visa officer at the embassy or consulate.

USA Visit Visa Requirements for Pakistani Passport Holders

The US embassy in Islamabad and the consulate general in Karachi are the designated centers for receiving non-immigrant visa applications from Pakistani applicants. Residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and FATA should submit their applications to the embassy in Islamabad, while those from Sindh and Balochistan should reach out to the consulate general in Karachi.

Essential Criteria for a US Visa in Pakistan

  • A passport, valid for at least 6 months
  • Appointment letter (Printed)
  • Visa application confirmation (Printed)

The mentioned essential documents should be brought to the embassy or consulate when applying for a US visa in Pakistan. Below, I will provide additional supporting documents for your application.

Supplemental Documents for US Visit Visa Applications from Pakistan

To support your visa application, you may choose to bring along the following additional documents. However, it is not mandatory to do so. The most critical aspect of obtaining a US visa is the interview. If you satisfy the interviewing officer with honest and clear answers, your chances of success are higher. Here is a list of optional additional documents:

  • Bank statement for the last 6 months
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • B-form for your children (if they are accompanying you)
  • FRC – Family registration certificate (if the family is accompanying you)
  • Employment Letter (if employed)
  • Leave Certificate (if employed)
  • Company Registration & Relevant Documents (if self-employed)
  • Property papers (if you own property in Pakistan)

Please note, these documents are not mandatory. Only present them if the officer specifically requests them. If the officer has difficulty understanding your statements, providing a document can help clarify your situation. In my case, the officer only asked to see my bank statement. She examined it briefly and returned it to me immediately.

While explaining my purpose for visiting the US, the interviewing officer had some difficulty understanding me, likely due to the glass window separating us. To ensure clarity, I presented the invitation letter I received from the US company I was visiting. This helped her comprehend my reason for traveling to the USA.

Interview Queries for Pakistani Applicants of US Visit Visa

The US visa process consists of two parts . The initial phase involves submitting your application online, while the second phase requires attending an interview at the embassy. In the first part, you provide all the necessary information, including details from your passport and the purpose of your visit visa to the USA. When you face the officer, they already have this information from your form, along with data from various databases. It’s crucial to be truthful in your application; providing false information can lead to visa refusal.

The visa interview typically begins with fundamental questions, many of which you’ve already addressed in the application form. These may include inquiries like why you’re going to the USA and how long you plan to stay.

During the 5 to 6-minute interview, expect follow-up questions and cross-questions. The officials aim to understand your genuine purpose for visiting the USA. They are skilled at discerning honesty from falsehood.

Simply be yourself and respond truthfully. It’s vital to maintain consistency in your statements. Many of the questions will be drawn from the visa application you filled out online in the D-160 form.

Understanding Administrative Processing for US Visit Visa

Currently, it’s quite common for US visa applications to undergo an administrative process. This process involves a security background check, typically conducted within the USA by agencies like the FBI.

If the visa officer takes your passport and provides you with a document indicating administrative processing, it means that, in principle, your US visa is approved. However, the visa officer requires a security check to be carried out by the US government.

The duration of this process can vary significantly, ranging from one week to one year. It’s important to note that this is a case-specific procedure. In my case, the administrative process for my visa application took only one week. However, some individuals have reported it taking more than six months for them.

Importance of Travel History for US Visit Visa Applications

It’s important to note that a robust travel history is not always a prerequisite. If you have strong factors like solid ties to your home and a reputable professional background, an extensive travel history may not be as crucial.

I find it perplexing why some individuals travel solely to accumulate a travel history. Personally, when I applied for a US visa, I had only visited Thailand, Malaysia, UAE, and Sri Lanka. None of these trips were undertaken with the intention of enhancing my US visa application. It’s worth mentioning that my UK visa had been rejected just 15 days before I applied for the US visa.

However, if you’re a single individual under 30, having some travel experience can bolster your case. Generally, those who are married and possess a strong professional background tend to have higher chances of US visa approval.

Visa officers are keen on understanding what ties you to your home country and what you’re leaving behind when you travel. Family (spouse and children) holds paramount importance in this regard. Additionally, a thriving business or a stable, long-term job are considered significant ties for visa purposes.

Consider this scenario: A close associate faced two rejections for a US visa. Despite having compelling merits, being unmarried and lacking international travel experience proved a hurdle. At 24 years of age, the odds were against him. In contrast, another individual, aged 42 with a family, modest income, and limited travel history (Malaysia & Dubai), secured visa approval in a mere five minutes.

The US visa application process, relatively speaking, is notably streamlined. It’s akin to a calculated risk for many Pakistanis. On interview day, it’s either a swift visa acquisition or a loss of the $160 application fee. This underlines the importance of meticulous preparation. Your purpose for visiting the USA must be genuine and presented with utmost clarity when probed by the visa officer.

Financial Requirements: How Much Bank Statement is Needed?

In terms of finances, more is definitely better. While having a substantial amount in your bank account is advantageous, it’s important to be realistic, especially for working-class individuals. Considering the considerable expenses and distance between Pakistan and the USA, it’s crucial to have sufficient funds available when applying for a visit visa.

For instance, if you earn Rs. 100,000 per month in Pakistan, having around 1 million PKR in your account demonstrates sound financial management. This signifies savings from your earnings. It’s also wise to assess your income and expenses. If your spending approaches or exceeds your earnings, it may weaken your application. To be on the safe side, I recommend submitting a bank statement with more than 1 million rupees, considering the high costs associated with the USA.

Concluding Thoughts on the US Visa Process

For unmarried individuals, focusing on establishing strong business or job connections, property ties, and accumulating travel experiences can be particularly beneficial. If you’re an avid traveler, exploring tourism opportunities in the USA is a sensible choice, given the generous 5-year visa duration. Applying for a US visa is a worthwhile endeavor, as it can lead to numerous opportunities. With a valid US visa, you’ll enjoy visa-free access to countries like Turkey, Georgia, Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Additionally, holding a US visa significantly boosts your chances of obtaining a Canadian visa on a Pakistani passport.

The first step in applying for a US visa is to determine which type of visa is best suited for your travel purpose. There are several different types of visas, each with its own requirements and application process.

Once you have determined the appropriate visa category, you must complete the online visa application form. After the form is submitted, you will need to schedule an appointment for an interview at the US Embassy or Consulate in Pakistan.

At the interview, you will be required to present documentation to support your visa application. You will also be asked questions about your travel plans and background. Following the interview, your visa may be approved or denied.

If your visa is approved, you will be required to pay a visa issuance fee and submit your passport for visa stamping. Once your passport is returned, you will be able to travel to the United States.

The US visa application process can be lengthy and complex. It is important to follow all instructions carefully and to allow sufficient time for your application to be processed.

US Visa Interview for Pakistani Citizens

As a Pakistani citizen, you will need to schedule an appointment for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Pakistan. You will need to bring a passport that is valid for travel to the United States, a nonimmigrant visa application, a photograph, and evidence of your ties to Pakistan.

During your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are eligible to receive a U.S. visa. The officer will ask you questions about your background and your plans for your visit to the United States. You will also be asked to provide fingerprints and a photograph.

After your visa interview, the consular officer will inform you whether your visa has been approved or denied. If your visa is approved, you will be asked to pay a visa issuance fee. You will then be able to travel to the United States.

US Visa Tips for Pakistani Citizens

There are a few things to keep in mind when applying for a US visa as a Pakistani citizen.

  • Make sure you have all the required documents for your visa application.

Applying for US Visitor Visa for Graduation of an International Student

avatar

In this blog, we provide a comprehensive guide on how international students in US can apply for a US Tourist / Visitor (B-2) visa for their family members and parents to attend their graduation or convocation ceremony. This blog will provide you the step by step process and documents required to apply for a B-2 visa.

What is a B-2 Visa?

B-2 visa is a non-immigrant type of visa which allows foreign nationals to enter the US temporarily for tourism, family visits, medical treatment, or other non-business purposes. The B-2 visa is also commonly known as a tourist visa or visitor visa. It allows the holder to stay in the US for a maximum of six months per visit.

Who can apply for a B-2 visa to attend your graduation?

Parents, siblings, relatives and friends of an international student in the US can apply for a B-2 visa to attend the graduation ceremony. They need to fill the DS-160 non-immigrant application form, schedule a visa interview and attend the visa interview at the US Embassy to get the B-2 visa. They can attend the visa interview in a group at the same time.

When should I start the US Visitor (B-2) Visa application process?

Due to the current visa interview date appointment delay issues in some countries like Nepal and India, it is recommended to start the visa processing six month prior to the graduation ceremony to ensure that the visa interview date can be booked at the right time. Once the current situation of visa interview date appointments is normalized, you can start the application process three months prior to the graduation.

How to Apply for a US Visitor (B-2) Visa?

To apply for a US Visitor (B-2) visa, follow these steps:

Get an invitation letter from your university about your graduation / convocation ceremony, including your name, major, graduation date, and some description about you.

Fill out the DS-160 Form for your parents/siblings/relatives.

Create a CGI Federal Account to book the visa interview appointment.

Pay the Visa Interview Fee of $160 for each applicant from the Bank or Credit / Debit Card or online platform.

Book the visa interview appointment. If you want to book the visa interview in a group at a time, create a group scheduling appointment request and book the visa interview appointment for all applicants at the same time.

Attend the visa interview at the US Embassy / Counselor office and get the visa. If your parents or family members cannot answer visa interview questions in English, they can choose to attend the visa interview in their native language such as Nepali, Hindi etc so that they will be asked questions in native language and answer those questions in their native language.

If the visa is refused at the interview, same steps can be followed to apply again.

Documents Required for the B-2 Visa Interview:

  • DS-160 Confirmation Page
  • Visa Interview Fee Payment Receipt
  • Invitation Letter from the university for graduation
  • One 2 x 2 photo of each applicant
  • International Student's I-20 and transcripts

B-2 Visa Interview Questions

The chances of B-2 visa acceptance is high and the questions are also simple. While answering, your parents need to match the information filled in the DS-160 form. Here are potential interview questions which can be asked:

  • What is your occupation?
  • What is the name of your son’s / daughter’s university?
  • What is he/she studying?
  • How long will you stay in the US?
  • Who will fund your stay in the US?
  • What is the reason for your visit?
  • Do you have anyone other than your son / daughter in the US?

How to answer a B-2 Visa Interview Question to get the visa?

To receive a B-2 visa, demonstrate to a counselor officer that you qualify for a U.S. visa through your answers and documents. The answers must demonstrate:

  • That you trip to the US is a temporary visit for your child’s graduation
  • That you plan to stay in the US for a limited period of time
  • That you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses in the US
  • That you will return to your home country

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, applying for a US Visitor (B-2) visa for your parents and family members to attend your graduation ceremony in the US can be a smooth process if you follow the necessary steps and provide the required documents. You should start the application process early to ensure that you can book the visa interview appointment at the right time. By providing accurate and truthful answers during the visa interview and demonstrating that your visit is temporary and you have the means to cover your expenses, you will obtain a B-2 visa.

The fee for the shuttle is approximately 500 Pakistani Rupees for a two-way trip. (The shuttle service is a private company, and the price is subject to change without notice.)

Sending documents to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad

Following your interview, if you need to send us any documents, please DO NOT mail them to us directly. Instead, follow the instructions the consular officer gives you during your interview.

Rescheduling or cancelling your interview

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please notify us through our online go to US Travel docs to select a new appointment date. There may be a significant wait before the next available appointment, so please attempt to attend the date already assigned.  For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa may become available within the month you are scheduled by NVC. For some of our numerically limited visa categories, there is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview. Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you request to reschedule your interview.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad must follow certain security procedures. Any visitor who declines to be screened by U.S. Embassy security personnel will be unable to enter the embassy. You may not bring cell phones, cameras, or any other electronic equipment into the embassy. All bags will be searched. To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview.

Accompanying Persons

Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview. Only the following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

  • Interpreter:  Applicants may bring ONE interpreter if they do not speak English or Urdu well enough to participate in an interview.
  • Special Needs Visitors:  Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child.

Immigrant visa fees

If you have not paid all required fees to the National Visa Center, please be prepared to pay these fees at the U.S Embassy on the day of your appointment before your interview. All fees may be paid in either U.S. dollars or the Pakistani Rupee equivalent. We accept cash and credit cards only. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded . A complete list of fees can be found on our  Fees for Visa Services webpage .

Do not make travel plans outside of Pakistan prior to visa issuance

If your visa is approved, we will keep your passport at the embassy while we prepare your immigration packet and print a visa for your passport. We will return your passport to you later via courier services only. If you have to travel within Pakistan while your passport is still with us, please make sure you have a valid picture ID other than your passport.

After Your Interview

A consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because he/she needs to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing.  When additional documents are requested, the consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the embassy.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval?

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will place your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors. We will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give it to the U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive at the port of entry in the United States for the first time.  Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are:  children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a fiancé(e) (K) visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your issued visa. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as all accompanying family members with visas. Unless they are eligible for benefits under the Child Status Protection Act, children who are issued a visa before turning 21 years of age must enter the United States before their 21 st birthday to avoid losing their immigrant status.

The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a fiancé(fiancé (e) (K) visa.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. If you plan to travel outside the U.S. before your green card arrives :  Please consult USCIS’s and CBP’s websites for rules about what documents you need to re-enter the country. We also recommend you check with the airline to ensure you are in compliance with their rules. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you may lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – Children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school in the United States. Therefore, we recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. Additionally, if your child is adopted, you have full custody as a result of a divorce, or you share custody with the child’s other parent, we recommend that you bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custodial papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will likely need these papers (translated into English) in the United States for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Information for New Immigrants – Please visit the USCIS web page for helpful information on moving to the United States. You can read their publication “Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants” online.

U.S. Tourist Visa: How to Make your Chances of Approval Higher

For those foreign nationals who are not exempted from the Visa Waiver Program, they need to secure a tourist visa (B1 or B2) to travel to the United States for short visits, either for business or pleasure. Examples include tourism, vacation, visiting family and friends, medical treatment, business meeting, attending a business workshop, or personal leisure.

Normally, most applicants want to know their chances of approval before proceeding to apply. With this in mind, we came up with a list of documents that you may use to declare as proof of ties to help in convincing the consular officer that you are going back to your home country after the short visit.

The information listed below are for reference only and not to assure the approval of your tourist visa application. It is on the decision of the U.S. immigration officer whether to approve or to deny your visa application.

Here are few suggested proof of ties:

Having a job in your home country will not guarantee to have your visa issued. Immigration officers also look at the length of your current and previous employment, the type of job you have or had, and your current salary income.

The duration of requested visit to the US will also be measured, as Immigration Officers most likely question applicants who wish to stay for more couple of months. It’s important to consider the nature of your current job and the allowable leave your company issues, thus, you will need to provide Certificate of Employment stating your position, start date, current status, monthly or annual salary income, and leave certification. Providing this evidence will serve as a reference for the immigration officer who will evaluate your application.

Family Obligation

Examples of family obligations are elderly parents who need your presence to take care of their needs and obligation to take care of your child / children, especially when they are still going to school. The applicant should submit official documents establishing the family relationships, letters from physicians explaining important medical conditions of any dependent family members, and documents establishing the current school enrolment of the children.

You may also obtain supporting letters from family members, attesting that they will look after your loved ones while you are shortly away. This will help answer questions of the immigration officer as to who will take care of them if you go to the U.S.

Property and Personal Asset

Individuals are less likely to leave if they own a home, have property, or have large amounts of funds in investment accounts in their home country. While financial assets are required to establish the ability to support the visit, evidence of property and financial assets should also be provided as evidence that the applicant’s connections to the home country. Evidence can include ownership of real estate property, business, or house.

Community Involvement

Showing documents that you currently participate to your community may also increase your chances of getting your visa application approved. This may help convince the consular officer that you are happy with your involvement or obligation in a specific community activity and you are likely to return in your home country for this reason.

Travel History

If you have previously visited outside your home country for tourism, and have not overstayed or have followed your allowable stay provided by the juristic immigration, then you are more likely establishing a trust to the immigration officer that you will not overstay during your visit to the U.S. and that you will return to your home country after your vacation.

The more documentation that you submit to show that you will return to your home country, the better the chance for the approval of your visa.

Question, please. My Filipino friend’s 38-year-old sister just went thru the USA tourist visa process. She has everything correct, all legal employment, records with leave of absence, marriage certificate, uncle’s address in Los Angeles, phone numbers and email, approx. $2,500 in the bank, small land title, one stamp in her passport, but she still was denied and very upset. Her son just graduated from school. This was her best time to take a short vacation to see the USA. Any advice? She wants to try again. Thank you.

Dear Anthony,

The applicant may re-apply again. Make sure to accomplish the DS-160 as precise as possible.

  • Prepare the supporting documents.
  • Bring all original documents during the interview.
  • As the consular officer asks questions, hand over the relevant document to the interviewing officer.

During the interview, prepare to answer day-to-day plans upon arrival to the US, the purpose of the trip, current job, personal information, family, and finances.

Make sure to demonstrate that she will come back to Thailand at the end of the visit.

These and the significant amount of social ties will give her an advantage of getting approved for the visa.

It’s actually a great and useful piece of info. I’m happy that you just shared this useful info with us. Please stay informed like this. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Corine! Thank you for your input. Glad that we could help.

Impressive! Thanks for sharing this.

Hello, i am planning on applying, i have all of the above except my parents overstayed their visa in the US before when i was only 12 years old. Although it is not my fault since i was a kid and we all left willingly will this affect my chances?

Hi Larissa,

No. It will not affect your application. The application will be based solely on the applicant.

It’s great that you talked about tourist visas and their types. Recently, one of my friends mentioned he’s having some issues with an aunt who wants to visit him. I believe immigration issues are a delicate topic, and a lawyer by your side is the best idea, so I’ll be sure to tell my friend about it. Thanks for the information on tourist visa applications.

Glad to help. For consultation and assistance, feel free to contact us.

Hello. I plan to apply for a Visa. I am a 22 year old Filipino citizen. I’m currently studying in the Philippines and managing a business. I want to visit USA because my relatives are there. Any help on how I can increase my chances of getting approved aside from what is stated here? Thanks!

Dear Carlos,

The most important thing is to show sufficient evidence that you plan to visit the US only for tourism purposes and return to your country afterward. This article gives you some ideas of how to do that. Depending on your circumstances, your family in the US could also act as a sponsor, which may strengthen your application.

Once you receive your visa, you can make travel arrangements. Note that F-1 visa holders can enter the USA up to 30 days before the start date listed on Form I-20.

How Can I Get a Student Visa from Pakistan to the US?

If you are a student from Pakistan hoping to come to the US for college, follow our step-by-step guide to applying for the F-1 student visa.

A smiling Pakistani student in a hijab sitting next to an American student both taking notes in a college classroom.

In 2019, there were more than 7,000 students from Pakistan in the US—and the majority of these students were pursuing undergraduate programs. In order to come to the US for college, they each needed to apply for an F-1 visa.

This one-stop guide goes over everything Pakistani students need to start the application process to study in the USA, including documents required for the F-1 visa and the visa application fee.

What Is an F-1 Visa and Why Do I Need One?

An F-1 visa is a type of student visa issued for nonimmigrants planning to study in the US at an accredited US university or college. Generally, an F-1 visa is valid for the course of your degree program, which can range from two to five years. Once your degree program is completed, you may be eligible to stay in the US for up to 60 days through Optional Practical Training (OPT) . If you are pursuing a STEM-related field, you can extend this period for an additional 24 months.

Before you can apply for an F-1 visa as an international student from Pakistan, you first need to get accepted to a US college or university that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Using School Search , you can identify whether your university or college is eligible for the F-1 visa.

If you are still unsure about which university and degree programs are right for you, do not worry. Reach out to a Shorelight advisor to discuss potential colleges and majors that align with your long-term goals. You can also learn more about studying in the US with Shorelight’s higher education guide for international students.

Once you have received your acceptance to a US college or university and confirmed that you will enroll, you can start the F-1 visa application process.

How Can I Get a Student Visa From Pakistan to the US?

If you’ve been asking — “How can I get a student visa from Pakistan to the US?” here is a step-by-step guide on applying for an American visa as a Pakistani student. For a more detailed explanation of the F-1 visa application process and documents required, check out our in-depth guide to US visas for international students .

1. Enroll in Your US University or College and Receive Your I-20 Form

Once you have secured a spot with your university or college, they will send you an I-20 form that you will need throughout the F-1 visa process. This includes information like your Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) ID, the start and end dates of your academic program, and your source of funding. It is important to double-check all the information in the I-20 form before you sign the document.

Before moving on to the next step of the F-1 visa process, you have to make the payment for the SEVIS fee ($350, which is approximately Rs 98,200). Make sure to print a copy of your receipt—you will need it for the visa interview !

2. Complete the Required DS-160 Application

For the DS-160 application , you are required to submit your information online through the application portal. (You can learn more about the DS-160 on the U.S. Department of State website .)

After completing the DS-160 form, pay the visa fees ($185, or approximately Rs 51,900) to receive a confirmation page with a barcode. You will have to print this page for the interview.

3. Schedule an Interview

Once you have completed and submitted the I-20 and DS-160 forms, find the US embassy or consulate closest to you and book an interview.

Here is a list of US embassies and consulates in Pakistan:

U.S. Embassy in Islamabad

U.S. Consulate General Karachi

U.S. Consulate General Lahore

U.S. Consulate General Peshawar

To find out how long you will have to wait for an interview, you can check the U.S. Department of State website. By keeping an eye on US visa appointment available dates and wait times, you can plan ahead.

4. Prepare for Your Visa Interview

For the final step in the F-1 visa application process, make a list of all the documents that you should take to the interview . This includes:

Your passport

I-20 and DS-160 forms, including the I-20 payment receipt and DS-160 confirmation page

A copy of your visa photo

Any supporting documents that prove intent to return to Pakistan after graduation

Before the interview, remember to practice answering mock interview questions with a friend or your Shorelight enrollment advisor.

Next, let us go over some commonly asked questions from students in Pakistan about the F-1 visa.

What if My Visa Gets Rejected?

Unfortunately, there is no appeal process if your F-1 visa gets denied. However, this does not mean you cannot apply again!

If your visa does not get approved by the US embassy, it is important to find out why. Once you know the reason, it is easier to reapply for the student visa with any additional documents required.

What if My Visa Interview Gets Delayed?

If your study program is starting within 60 days and there are no interview appointments available before it begins, you can request an expedited appointment. You will have to bring your I-20 form and the receipt for the SEVIS fee.

Can I Travel on My Student Visa?

Once they have arrived at their US college or university, students from Pakistan on an F-1 visa may travel within the United States and internationally. To do so, a travel signature is required on page two of the I-20 form, provided by the designated school official (DSO), who often works in the international student service department of the university.

Additionally, visas and passports must be valid and I-20 forms must be up to date. For more information about the documentation required for reentry and the limitations on travel, refer to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website .

Can I Work While Studying on F-1 Visa?

Work is permitted on an F-1 visa only under certain conditions.

For F-1 visa students, work is typically limited to on-campus jobs. Students are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week. To seek employment outside the university, you can apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) , if applicable to your program.

Can I Transfer to Another University or College on an F-1 Visa?

Yes, you can . But you will have to speak with your DSO before applying. To maintain your F-1 visa status, the university or college you selected would need to issue a new I-20 form.

Do I Need Travel Insurance or Medical Health Insurance?

Not all universities require travel insurance when traveling to the United States, but it is often recommended, as an insurance plan could potentially save you a lot of time and money, especially with unexpected travel delays or medical emergencies.

The majority of universities in the US require students to obtain medical insurance to complete enrollment. Students can enroll in a university-sponsored health insurance plan, which is commonly included in university fees. For more information about travel and health insurance plans, reach out to a Shorelight advisor.

For students in Pakistan hoping to study in the US, the F-1 visa process may feel time consuming and challenging — but with the right amount of research and preparation, you can improve your chances for success.
