Cast Q&A: CATS 🐈
What's your name and who do you play in the show?
Hi there, my name is Cameron Schutza and I play Old Deuteronomy
For those who haven’t seen CATS before, in your own words (no spoilers) what's the show all about?
Once a year, a group of special cats, known as Jellicle cats, get together with their leader (Old Deuteronomy) to decide which of them gets to be reborn to a new life.
Were you a fan of the show growing up?
I have never seen Cats before. My parents saw the original broadway cast and I always liked the music but I don’t know that I would have said I was a fan. In the 5th grade we had a poetry unit in our English class. We had to memorize and recite poems in front of the whole class, and some of the poems were from T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. A small group of us performed some of the songs from the show for the rest of the class for extra credit.
Do you have a favorite song/moment in the show?
I am fortunate that I get to sit and listen to my colleagues quite a bit, as they perform their songs for Old Deuteronomy, and I keep finding new moments to love. Though I will say, the opening and the Jellicle Ball are pretty magical moments.
How is life on the road?
So far so good. This is an incredible group of people and I am fortunate to have them as my family for the next year.
Any favorite stops/moments so far?
LA was a blast and Santa Barbara was absolutely gorgeous. I am looking forward to exploring a lot of new cities while on tour.
Where is the States are you from originally?
I am originally from Houston, TX
Are you excited to visit Cleveland? Anything you’re hoping to see while in town?
I haven’t been to Cleveland since probably about 1999 when I was doing college trips my senior year of high school (I applied to Case Western and The Cleveland Institute), so I am excited to explore the city more this time.
Fun one before we finish…Garfield, Cat in the Hat, Puss in Boots, Tom (of Tom & Jerry), Hello Kitty which famous cat are you most like?
I think I would be a combination of a few. Maybe a bit of Garfield, a bit of Felix the Cat, a little Cheshire Cat, and a touch of Puss in Boots.
Finally, why should audiences come out and see CATS when you come to Cleveland?
Cats is really an amazing theatrical experience. The amount of talent on the stage alone should be enough to entice anyone to the show; but, add to that the amazing orchestra; incredible set, costumes and wigs; the brilliant score; and the unbelievable choreography it is an easy decision…Come see Cats!!
CATS joins us November 1-20 as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series 22/23. For tickets visit playhousesquare.org

THEATER REVIEW: “Cats” @ Playhouse Square by Laura Kennelly
Through Sun 11/20
Welcome to the Jellicle Ball, a treat for lovers of dance (and tolerators of felines).
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award winning hit Cats pounced onto the Conner Palace Stage at Playhouse Square last week. Often credited with redefining Broadway shows, this lightly plotted, motion-packed 1980s musical charmed audiences and set Broadway attendance records during its 18-year run.
Written before Phantom of the Opera, Cats hints of Webber’s subsequent use of mystic fantasy as it strings together a song/dance version of modernist poet T. S. Eliot’s works, primarily those found in Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats .
So, what to expect? A fluffy-light plot brought to life by an ensemble cast of over two dozen extraordinary dancers who sing, act and sometimes talk directly to you (if you are in the front rows anyway). The plot? It seems that the stray cats who hang out in the junkyard at night have an annual Jellicle Ball, an event where one is chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and start over. (You recall that all cats have nine lives, right?)
Presented in format close to an old-time vaudeville review, the show allows multiple cat characters a showcase that highlights their unique personalities. It’s hard to pick a favorite, so I won’t, but extra lights, bells and whistles are due to Ibn Snell for creating an athletic and graceful Mistoffelees in what is perhaps the show’s most extravagant number, “The Magical Mister Mistoffelees.”
Acrobatic tiger-marked thieves, Brian Craig Nelson (as Mungojerrie) and Taryn Smithson (as Rumpleteazer), paired impressively as they rolled and tumbled in true naughty kitten fashion in “Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer.” Cameron Schutza (as Old Deuteronomy) conveyed authority as he ruled (or tried to rule) the tribe. Other cats whose quirks and stories stood out were a top-hatted Jon Anker Bow as “Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town” and John Zaborsky as “Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat.”
I am not overlooking the most well-known song from Cats , “Memories.” This recurring song, sung by the poor outcast feline, Grizabella (Tayler Harris), ties the story together. In the final iteration, Harris movingly evokes tender feelings about what was good in past days.
John Napier’s scenic and costume design allowed the cats to flaunt toned bodies around a dark and mystic junkyard. In a similar manner, Natasha Katz’s lighting design pointed our attention and highlighted actions choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler (and based on Gillian Lynne’s original work).
A few other special effects enlivened the action, as when the evil criminal cat Macavity the Mystery Cat (Sam Buchanan) created a power outage or when all the cats joined to assemble a giant tire (which then ascended heavenward) from scraps in the junkyard.
Directed by Trevor Nunn, Cats relies on musical support provided by a large hidden orchestra conducted by director Jonathan Gorst. It’s fun to hear bits of floor-rattling organ music creeping into numbers and think “Ah yes, the Phantom of the Opera is almost born.”)
The nimble ensemble cast — most stayed onstage all the time (while quietly acting like typical cats) — also includes Sam Bello (Sillabub), Lexy Bittner (Cassandra), Michelle E. Carter (Jennyanydots), Erica Lee Cianciulli (Bombalurina), Reagan Davidson (Tantomile), Nora Degreen (Demeter), Allyson Duarte (Jellylorum), Dominic Fortunato (Pouncival), Sammy Fossum (Alonzo), Wilson Livingston (Coricopat), Brendan Moran (Tumblebrutus), Yuka Notsuka (Victoria), and Kade Wright (Munkustrap) as well as Clara Hevia, Kieran Macdonald, José Raúl Mangual, Tony Mowatt, Gracie Anderson, Luke Bernier, Ellie Chancellor, Max Craven and Rachael Haber.
BOTTOM LINE: If you love dance, the whole production is a delight. If you’re coming for a story, read Eliot’s poems first so you can understand what’s happening. If you want a complex, finely synchronized plot, this might not be the show for you. But hey! It’s a musical and you knew that before you came, right? Just enjoy a night in Webber’s junkyard watching some gorgeous cats.

Andrew lloyd webber’s ‘cats’ enjoying yet another life with cleveland-bound tour, musical will bring one more ‘memory’ to playhouse square.
Since its 1982 world premiere, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, has been seen by more than 75 million people worldwide.
Now the record-breaking affair has been reimagined for a new generation with updated sound design, direction and choreography. The current national tour makes its way to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square for a KeyBank Broadway Series run Nov. 1 through 20 at the Connor Palace .
Someone who also has multiple lives with “Cats” is musical director Jonathan Gorst.
“At a very young 23, I was brought out to New York to audition, but I had actually never seen the show,” said Gorst, calling from Los Angeles. “I ended up playing a piece of the score at the Winter Garden Theatre as a sight-reading project. That was my first exposure to the show.
“Then nine months later in 1998, I was asked to join the tour in Atlanta. I became the keys player and from there I was able to become associate conductor and later the music director.”
From there, Gorst moved on to another Webber smash hit where he was conductor and music director of “Phantom of the Opera.”
When asked for the biggest difference between the Tony Award-winning productions, Gorst pointed to the musicality of “Cats.”
“It has such an appeal across many styles,” Gorst said. “Conducting it, it’s always very engaging to go from something orchestral to something that feels more like a jazzy number. There are numbers like ‘The Jellicle Ball’ that cross all of these fantastic musical styles and sweeping melodies.
“Then you have a number with this pop-rock feel with ‘The Rum Tum Tugger’ that goes to an orchestrally slow and deeply emotional piece in ‘Grizabella.’ It just moves you through so many different styles. It’s just one of those shows that I think will be around forever because the music is unforgettable.”
Being unforgettable does cut both ways.
On one hand, a song everyone remembers from “Cats” is the beloved “Memory.”
On the other, many fans have been trying to forget the 2019 train wreck feature film.
“The reaction in general has not been positive,” Gorst said. “I had nothing to do with that film, but it was just the execution of it was probably different than people had expected. It’s not similar to what we do on the live stage.”
A funny side note to a “Cats” feature film we’ll never see is the one talked about in 1990s film “Six Degrees of Separation,” in which, supposedly, movie legend Sidney Poitier was attempting to bring the theater classic to the silver screen.
While a complete fantasy— and, mind you, based on literally no precedent of musical theater success from the Academy Award winner — that would have been quite the flick.
Gorst laughed, “Wouldn’t that have been amazing?”

Kate Klotzbach
Cleveland Theater Writer
A CATS Life – interview with national tour 2022 cast member MEGAN ARSENEAU
The tour life is a magical ride, especially for a CAT! Wright State University grad Megan Arseneau gives a little insight into feline life on the road as a Swing in the 2022 national tour of CATS , now playing at the Connor Palace at Playhouse Square .
Kate Klotzbach: What is your role / job on the tour? Megan Arseneau: I am a swing! I cover 8 of the 10 female-presenting characters in the show! The roles I can go on for at a moment’s notice are Demeter, Sillabub, Rumpleteazer, Jennyanydots, Bombalurina, Jellylorum, Cassandra, and Grizabella. As a swing, it’s my job to learn each of these roles (we call them “tracks”)- I memorize their lines, their songs, their choreography, and every single movement they make onstage so that when someone calls out of the show I can step in and perform the role as seamlessly as possible. As for my favorite role- I can’t choose just one! This show is so special in that each character is featured and has their own super fun personality. I would be sad to choose just one, I love them all for different reasons! It would be like choosing my favorite child.
KK: Are you new to touring or are you more of a road veteran? MA: I am a returning member of the CATS tour, so I’m no longer a newbie, but I’m still only in my second season of touring.
KK: Are you a cat person or a dog person? MA: Dog person.
KK: Why are you most excited to come to Cleveland and the Ohio area? MA: I have lots of friends and family coming to the show in Cleveland! It’s close enough for my parents to drive from Illinois, and my partner’s family is coming from Toledo! I also have many friends in Ohio since I went to Wright State University in Dayton.
KK: Do you come from a performing family? Did you grow up in the business? MA: I did not grow up in the business, though my parents both did theater at their high schools! I would say that my three siblings and I grew up surrounded by the arts, in addition to sports and academics. All four of us together have so many artistic abilities that we currently pursue, in and out of our careers.
KK: What was your audition / casting process like for this tour? MA: When I first saw the audition listing, I flipped out. It was the summer of 2020 and I was stacking boxes in a warehouse as a temporary pandemic job. I saw the listing on my phone, and just felt in my bones that this job was for me. I sent in all the audition videos they asked for, and then waited. Almost an entire year later, after COVID delays, I got an email inviting me to NYC for callbacks. I was there for three days, and then about a month later, I found out I booked the tour! Dream come true.
KK: Cleveland is the home of rock ‘n’ roll – what are some of your favorite solo artists or groups (rock, and any genre)? MA: I listen to lots of different types of music! Right now I love Remi Wolf. Her music is so fun and funky, and never fails to have me singing along.
KK: Outside of the arts, what are some things that you like to do in your spare time? MA: I love reading, listening to podcasts, jamming to music. On tour, I love to explore all the cities we go to, and find cute coffee shops to study my tracks. I also love just moving my body throughout the day. I’m a bit of a gym rat and my good friend Brian, who plays Mungojerry on tour, got me into yoga, which I do a lot now!!
KK: How do you get through a stressful travel day? MA: Coffee, snacks, my AirPods, and a good book on my Kindle. I try to hit the gym or do yoga before or after as well.
KK: How do you warm up / prep for the show? Any personal pre-show rituals or routines? MA: First of all, I am constantly reviewing and refreshing my memory on my tracks, whether I’m on stage or not. If I know I’m going on that night, I’ll leave time to review my notes for that track. Hours before getting to the theater, I try to make sure that I am awake, moving, maybe hitting the gym, and talking. Then when I get to the theater my voice and body are functioning well as a person before I start to warm up as a cat. I’ll do some yoga, maybe a ballet barre, my PT exercises (We have a physical therapist on tour with us!), or anything my body is telling me I need to get working before jumping into our big dance opening number. And a short vocal warmup, which changes based on which vocal line I’m singing that day! As for rituals, our makeup is very involved and takes up a lot of the pre-show process. If I’m nervous because I’m going on for a new track, it forces me to quiet my mind and focus on the task at hand- there are some tricky makeup plots! And sometimes if it’s a last-minute swing-on, I don’t have any time to prepare – I have to slap the makeup on, get in costume, and run onstage ASAP!
KK: What is your favorite part of this touring production (could be a particular song, tech element, travel story, etc.)? MA: The Overture is one of my favorite moments. I remember seeing it for the first time in tech rehearsal and tearing up. The music, the lights, the set- it just pumps me up!
KK: What advice do you have for young artists just starting out in their training, or who are early on in their career path? MA: Have fun!! Find confidence in who you are and what you can do! And also work hard at whatever technique you are being taught. If you can find the balance of always striving for excellence while having a good time living your passion and being yourself, you’ll be golden.
Most importantly though- strive to be the best person you can be. The kinder, easier to work with, and friendlier you are, the happier people will be to hire you. At a certain point, there is just too much talent all around! Someone you worked with five years ago could tell a director “you have to hire her, she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and we had so much fun doing (insert show here)!” and BAM you’ve got the job! To summarize: Be confident in your creativity, find the balance of working hard while having fun, and be kind!
CATS! Runs at Playhouse Square now through Sunday, November 20, 2022. Tickets are $20 – $100 and can be purchased by visiting https://www.playhousesquare.org/events/detail/cats-1 .

Cleveland Persian Society will host an 8-ring (4 judging rings daily) CFA, All Breed Cat Show.
January 6 & 7, 2024
Show hours are Saturday 8:30 - 3 and Sunday 9 - 4.
Fancy felines from around the country will have the opportunity to earn Top Cat status at the 2024 Annual CFA Cat Show sponsored by the Cleveland Persian Society. This will be our 106th year as a show-producing club.
More than 150 pedigreed cats are expected to compete in this year’s show. Many beautiful breeds are on the list of competitors including Ragdolls, Siberians, the hairless Sphynx, and some of the more well-known pedigreed cats, from Siamese to Persian.
The CFA cat show will be open to the public and provide spectators with an entertaining day. In addition to the judging activities, which will take place throughout the show, spectators can see cats “up close and in the fur” while they’re waiting to compete. Breeders are happy to answer any questions about their cats; some have kittens for sale. In addition, there will be 8 - 10 vendors offering cat-related products ranging from cat trees to cat toys, and everything in between. People food will also be available.
Tickets will be available at the gate. The cost of admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $10 for children over 5 to 12 years old, and children under 5 are Free. Families are $35.
The Cleveland Persian Society is a The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) member club . CFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of cats. CFA was founded in 1906 and is the world’s largest pedigreed cat registry with affiliated clubs producing more than 325 shows a year.
