15 Best Things to Do in Evansville (IN)

Southern Indiana ’s largest city is on an oxbow in the Ohio River, looking across the water to Kentucky.

Home to three NYSE companies, Evansville is a regional center for commerce, manufacturing and higher education, but also culture, with important performing arts venues and museums.

Downtown Evansville resonates with history, keeping many of its early 20th century buildings, and this is fringed by the refined Riverside District as well as Bally’s Evansville, Indiana’s first casino.

Evansville’s also has several reminders of its massive contribution to the United States’ war effort, most memorably a giant WWII-era tank landing ship that is usually docked on the riverfront.

1. Downtown Evansville

You can tell that a lot of love has gone into Evansville’s central commercial district in the last couple of decades.

Today this is a leafy, pedestrian friendly area, flush with culture, entertainment, dining choices and not to mention gorgeous old architecture in a spectrum of styles.

A veteran entertainment anchor is the Victory Theatre, opened in 1921 and the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

A big chunk of the attractions on this list are downtown, complemented by a smattering of stores you won’t find anywhere else and independent restaurants for all palates.

Be sure to wander south to appreciate the fine architecture in the Riverside Historic District, mostly built in the second half of the 19th century.

The riverfront area west of downtown is now fronted by modern hotels and casinos, with waterfront parks where you can watch the sunset or the famous fireworks on July 4.

2. Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science

Where downtown Evansville meets the Ohio river bank is one of Indiana’s most storied cultural institutions.

Since it was founded in 1904 this museum has amassed a collection of more than 30,000 objects, dealing with a variety of subjects including fine arts, decorative arts, history, anthropology and natural history.

Among the many highlights there’s European and American painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries, an interactive recreation of a 19th-century rivertown and the Humankind Gallery, shedding light on indigenous cultures in Asia, Africa and South America.

The spectacular Koch Immersive Theater has a 40-foot dome and 10,000-watt digital sound system, while also on the museum campus is the Evansville Transportation Center, exhibiting the history of transportation in Southern Indiana, with impressive railroad artifacts.

3. USS LST Ship Memorial

During World War II industrial production went into overdrive in Evansville, especially on the riverfront a piece of which became a 45-acre shipyard building humongous tank landing ships (LSTs).

Vital to the war effort, these amphibious vessels delivered tanks, trucks, jeeps and troops directly onto beaches during invasions.

It makes sense that today Evansville should be the home port for the only operational LST, still in WWII configuration to be afloat in US waters, and this ship participated in the landings at Sicily and Normandy.

This is on the riverside, conveniently connected to downtown Evansville by the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage, offering six tours a day when it’s docked in the city.

4. Angel Mounds State Historic Site

By the Ohio River to the southeast of Evansville is the site of a Middle Mississippian town that peaked from 1000 to 1450 C.E..

There was a large permanent community here sustained by the cultivation and storage of corn, leaving behind 12 earthen mounds once topped by ceremonial buildings.

The site was excavated in the mid-20th century by Indiana archeologist Glenn Albert Black (1900-1964), who unearthed more than 2.5 million artifacts here.

His research is the basis for the displays at the engrossing interpretive center, and you can also see reconstructions of Mississippian buildings on the site.

Elsewhere are 500 acres of open land without an archeological purpose, and containing a nature preserve, walking/biking trails and an 18-hole disc golf course.

5. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

This zoo on Evansville’s northwest side is open 365 days a year, and has been around since 1928. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden was one of the first zoological attractions in the country to use moats as a boundary for enclosures, rather than cages.

There are animals from some 200 species here, and perhaps the headline exhibit is Amazonia.

Opened in 2008, this living indoor rainforest habitat has Amazonian species like jaguars, capybaras, squirrel monkeys, black howler monkeys and Cuvier’s dwarf caimans.

At other exhibits you’ll come across zebras, giraffes, lemurs, clouded leopards, Mexican gray wolves and red pandas. The grounds are dotted with charming gardens, and every February Amazonia hosts Orchid Escape, when the jungle environment is abloom with colorful orchids.

6. Bosse Field

Of all the ballparks still in regular use in the United States, this stadium in Evansville is surpassed in age only by Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.

Opened in 1915, Bosse Field was the country’s first municipally owned sports stadium and is named for the mayor at the time, Benjamin Bosse (1875-1922).

Over the last 100+ years, the stadium has been home field for more than a dozen professional times, and since 1995 the main tenant has been the Evansville Otters, who play in the Midwestern Conference of the Frontier League.

This stately old ballpark was used as a location for A League for their Own (1992), and a game here is a must for any baseball purist.

7. Children’s Museum of Evansville

For children up to the age of 12, this interactive museum is housed in one of the most elegant buildings downtown.

The venue is Evansville’s Art Deco former public library, constructed in 1931, and the Children’s Museum opened in 2006.

The museum is made up of a series of open-ended, experiential zones, like Live Well, promoting healthy diet choices, and Work Smart, with stations helping to develop children’s curiosity for mechanics and engineering.

Quack Factory is home to Moe, the museum’s signature, climbable 20-foot duck, while Fantastic Plastic is a peek at Evansville’s plastics industry, combined with a section on recycling.

8. Evansville African American Museum

A little way east of downtown is an important museum dedicated to the history and traditions of African American families, traditions and organizations in the city.

The location is fascinating too, in the last surviving building of Lincoln Gardens, the second housing project established under FDR’s New Deal in 1938.

Inside you can see what it was like to live in the project in the 1930s, in a preserved section of an original apartment, while the remainder of the building is a modern museum.

You can learn the story of the surrounding Baptist town, a thriving black community, and discover key figures and milestones over the last century in Evansville. There are also worthwhile traveling temporary exhibits and shows for local artists.

9. Reitz Home Museum

Awaiting you in the Riverside Historic District is a stunning French Second Empire-style residence built in 1871 for the “Lumber Baron” John Augustus Reitz (1815-1891).

The house has been given a superb restoration, and as well as original period furniture the interiors feature hand-painted ceiling frescoes, molded plaster friezes, patterned parquet floors and silk damask walls.

The Reitz Home was left to a Catholic organization in the 1930s, later becoming the home of Evansville’s bishop, before being donated to a preservation society in 1974.

Tours have taken place ever since, and the house is considered one of the best preserved examples of a Victorian residence in the country.

10. Willard Library

A grand sight to keep in mind downtown is the oldest operating library in Indiana. The palatial building, opened in 1885, is in the Gothic Revival style, with contrasting red brick, white stone and terra cotta.

The library is an independent private institution, and its benefactor Willard Carpenter aimed to “improve the moral and intellectual culture of the inhabitants of Evansville”, making the library free of charge and accessible to all races, classes and sexes forever.

The Willard Library is noted for its extensive genealogy and local history collections, found on the second floor, and it is believed to be haunted by a “Lady in Grey”.

11. Evansville Wartime Museum

We’ve seen that Evansville was a major center for manufacturing during World War II, with several existing factories switching production to weapons, munitions and vehicles.

As well as warships, the city became a center for the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, rolling out 6,242 P-47s, almost half of the total made nationally during the war.

The factory was set next to the Evansville Regional Airport, and today there’s a museum in a hangar here remembering the city’s astonishing industrial output during the conflict.

The highlight at the Evansville Wartime Museum has to be Tarheel Hal, a genuine P-47 built just a short walk away, along with machinery used in the factory.

12. Burdette Park

This rolling, wooded park by the USI campus was founded in the 1920s, and was developed during the Great Depression by public works programs like the Work Progress Administration (WPA).

In the early 1960s Burdette Park’s aquatic center opened to the public, and this is still one of the largest outdoor pool complexes in the Midwest.

Just the place to cool off in summer, the Aquatic Center has an Olympic sized pool, a family pool with two slides, a children’s pool and a spray park. Burdette Park also has several day shelters that can be rented, as well as fully furnished chalets for overnight stays.

13. Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage

Meeting the Ohio River in Evansville, Pigeon Creek was the southern terminus of the Wabash and Erie Canal, a key link in a shipping route that connected the Great Lakes with New Orleans.

On the banks of the creek and a scenic stretch of the broad Ohio River is a ten-foot wide paved trail for bicycling, walking and jogging.

The Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage connects parks, nature areas, neighborhoods, business districts and visitor attractions like the USS LST Ship Memorial and Evansville Museum.

When we wrote this article the passage was just under seven miles long, but is expected to be part of a 42-mile system of trails encircling the entire city.

14. Ford Center

This impressive arena is impossible to miss in downtown Evansville, and was constructed as part of the downtown’s revitalization in the early 2010s.

A cutting-edge sweep of metal and glass, the Ford Center also has a base of Indiana limestone, which helps to ground it among the historic buildings downtown.

Replacing the old Roberts Municipal Stadium, the arena is a venue for concerts, conventions and WWE events, but also the home of the University of Evansville Purple Aces basketball team (NCAA Division I) and the professional Evansville Thunderbolts of the SPHL.

A few performers from the last few years include Blake Shelton, Kid Rock, Disturbed and George Strait.

15. West Side Nut Club Fall Festival

For a week in October some 200,000 people head to Franklin Street on Evansville’s West Side for one of the largest street festivals in the United States.

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival has a history going back to 1921, and grew dramatically in the post war years, with ever larger carnival rides and famous entertainers.

Starting on a Sunday and lasting the rest of the week, the festival features more than 130 food booths, talent competitions, tons of free live entertainment, carnival attractions, all culminating with a massive parade on Saturday.

Fried food is dominant here, and if you’re feeling adventurous this is a chance to try the traditional local specialty, fried brain sandwiches.

Attend a fun-packed festival

Devotees of the legendary Mexican fried corn treat flock to the hugely popular Evansville Taco Festival in downtown Evansville each year. Marvel at a relic of WWII

During the Second World War, industrial production in Evansville flourished, particularly  on the riverfront. Central to these wartime efforts was a large shipyard tasked with building tank landing ships (LSTs), amphibious vessels designed to deliver tanks, trucks, jeeps and troops directly onto enemy territory. Today the city remains the home port for the USS LST-325 , the only remaining operational LST on American waters, where it offers frequent tours to the public.

Discover 700 years of Native American history

Situated about eight miles southeast of Evansville, the Angel Mounds State Historic Site   takes visitors on a historical journey to a millennium ago. Steeped in Mississippian culture, the site represents the very beginning of modern archaeology in Indiana, and is one of the best-preserved, pre-contact Native American sites anywhere in North America. As well as its pre-historic resonance, it’s also an area of stunning natural scenery, with many coming here to hike or bike along the four-mile Angel Mounds Loop Trail. There’s also an interpretive centre that teaches you more about the original settlers who once lived here.

Peruse books at Indiana’s oldest public library

It’s fair to say that libraries don’t typically make it onto lists of top tourist attractions – but Willard Library is one of the rare exceptions. Situated in downtown Evansville, Indiana’s oldest operational library is housed in a palatial Gothic Revivalist building that dates back to 1885. But far more than mere architectural merit, the library has also had a major impact on intellectual life in Evansville, and is especially renowned for its extensive genealogy and local history collections.

Watch a live theatre show

Once a grand 1920s playhouse, the Victory Theatre underwent a significant renovation in recent years to bring it up to modern standards while retaining much of its previous character and style. As a result, the 2,000-capacity venue now offers spectators clean viewing lines and state-of-the-art audiovisual facilities together with many of its original features. Located on downtown Evansville’s charming cobblestone walkway, in addition to being the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the theatre also hosts a wide variety of concerts, Broadway shows, and children’s programming.

Go hiking in urban marshlands

A 35-acre natural area teeming with marshes, forests and meadows, the Howell Wetlands are one of the largest urban wetlands anywhere in Indiana. The rare ecosystem features a variety of habitats, with beavers, eagles, cranes, migrating birds, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, and possums among the animals that have made the area their home. A network of hiking trails and boardwalks can be traversed solo or as part of guided tours.

Catch a baseball game

As is the case in cities all across the US, baseball is a seriously big deal in Evansville. First opened back in 1915, Bosse Field is a historic sports arena and the home stadium of the Evansville Otters baseball team, who enjoy a loyal and vocal following that regularly packs the stately old ballpark to the rafters for matches. Luckily for visitors, tickets are usually made available to the public, meaning you can also take part in that most quintessential of American sporting experiences.

Get close to nature at an arboretum

Another of Evansville’s outdoor places of interest, Hartman Arbetorium was founded in 2001 to serve as a nature classroom for schoolchildren, as well as a place where all visitors could come and learn about the diversity of trees and shrubs found in Southern Indiana and the wider region. Just 148 years later, and the Evansville Museum is full of an interesting and eclectic collection of anthropological and natural history artifacts, historic documents, photographs, and fine art that live and breathe Evansville’s history. The museum also boasts an immersive planetarium theater for visitors to enjoy with regular events rotating every month.

3. Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Gardens

This zoo first opened its doors to visitors in 1928 and quickly became a pioneer in its field as the first zoo in Indiana and the first in the country to introduce the use of a moat system: displaying animals in exhibits which resemble their native habitats. Today, a visit to Mesker Park Zoo offers an exciting educational adventure with encounters with over 700 animals representing 186 species from around the globe.

The zoo is organized into 10 exhibits each representing a different part of the world. For rainforest lovers, head over to Amazonia with living plants and more than 150 animals including jaguars, bats, monkeys, Arrau turtles, and capybaras. Future visitors should keep an eye out for the penguin exhibit opening soon.

2. Angel Mounds State Historic Site

Built between AD 1000 and 1450, the Angel Mounds Historic Site was once occupied by a community of approximately 1,000 Native Americans.

Today, the site welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in the roots of modern archaeology in the state of Indiana and explore recreations of important Mississippian structures. Gaze upon twelve earthen mounds as you learn about their traditional use for burials of important tribal members, before taking part in interactive activities such as reconstructing a broken clay pot.

Visitors are also welcome to discover the site following hiking trails through the nature reserve or alternatively get around slightly faster by bicycle. Finish your day by enjoying the site’s 18-hole disk golf course overlooking the banks of the Ohio River for some added fun.

1. USS LST-325

Out of the 1,051 Landing Ship Tanks (LST) built, more than a thousand survived to the end of World War II, but only one welcomes visitors for tours all year round: the LST-325.

Famously dubbed by Winston Churchill as “The Ship That Won the War”, a visit to the last fully operational WWII LST in her home port of Evansville is a rare opportunity to learn about American history and experience wartime history as it happened. 'Confusion' leads to county council limiting funds for Evansville museum Picasso exhibit

EVANSVILLE — The Vanderburgh County Council was too confused Wednesday afternoon to approve the full amount of money the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science needs to display its Pablo Picasso glasswork in a finished art gallery.

Explore Evansville CEO Alexis Berggren and museum director Mary Bower made the $500,000 request last week during the council's personnel and finance meeting. That amount was presented as the final funding needed to allow the museum to exhibit "Seated Woman With Red Hat," a rare glass artwork and recreation of a Picasso painting that bears the famous artist's signature.

Wednesday, the council approved $300,000 noting "confusion" around what the project entailed. The full amount had been presented by Bower as enough to cover the rest of the $2.5 million price tag to renovate the museum's gallery where the glass art would be displayed. It's opening date is set for June 22.

It's part of a much larger renovation project the museum is working on. During last week's meeting, and again Wednesday, Bower said there are two phases. Phase One is the art gallery and the second phase is the history gallery. In total it will cost about $9.5 million and Phase Two is not planned to start for at least a few years, Bower said last week.

Despite Berggren telling council last week that $500,000 gets the museum the Picasso on display, council didn't want to vote on the money when there was so much still left to be raised out of the $9.5 million.

"I think the consensus is not to do anything today, to table this and pick it up on the back end after you have, for sure, secured your other fundraising efforts to accumulate the $9.5 million," James Raben said.

At this point, Bower reiterated that the $9.5 million is the total price, for a project with two phases.

"We're asking for funding to complete this phase," she said.

"Here's where the confusion lies," Raben said. "We weren't given this information last week that it was two different projects."

Raben said the money could be addressed at another time, but the action they were making was based solely on the information they had from last week.

"I apologize, I felt like it was made clear that it was two separate phases," Berggren said. "That was certainly how it was presented to our own board and so I believe that's how it was presented here, that it was in two phases."

Where is the money coming from that county council approved?

The money is coming out of the Tourism Capital Improvement Fund, which is funded by innkeeper tax. It cannot be used for anything outside of projects aimed at bringing more tourism to the county.

"It's tourism money designed to fuel tourism infrastructure," Berggren said. "This project, whether you're an art enthusiast or not, we see as improvement and investment for future visitors to our community. I don't think it should be seen as an expense to Evansville or Vanderburgh County."

Berggren said the project is a worthy one, one that will add to the city's cultural landscape.

Where are fundraising efforts for the museum?

The rest of the money to renovate the art gallery was through private donors, and one grant from the state totaling $52,000 from the Indiana Destination Development Corporation.

"We're so close now with the art," Bower said. "We're hopeful we'll be able to finish that area quickly. The history area, that's a much bigger price tag, but we have been very successful in raising dollars."

The museum added its immersive theater through a $14 million capital campaign within the last 10 years.

"We do have a proven track record and great support within the community and the region for fundraising," she said.

Raben replied: "I get that, and please, I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but hope has never been a plan."

What happens with the project now?

The original $500,000 request was to finish the art gallery and display the glasswork piece.

Bower said the museum will display the piece and continue to finish the gallery around it.

The $300,000 in funding was passed unanimously, with comment from multiple councilors for them to come back and try for more.

"I would encourage you to come back, as well," president Jill Hahn said. "I think this body was very confused from last week's presentation and was not really ready to vote for the project that we originally intended that is presented today."

Tourist shoppers flock to brick-and-mortar stores as duty-free purchases decline

Olive Young, Musinsa, and Daiso have emerged as must-visit tourist shopping destinations, marking a shift from when they flocked to duty-free shops.

Many of the visitors — often young Japanese, Chinese and American customers — lean towards retailers with a strong brick-and-mortar presence on the street thanks to their relatively low prices and quick reflection of local trends.  

Purchases of clothing by foreign customers from Korea’s largest online fashion platform, Musinsa, have increased significantly.

Of all the customers, foreign customers at the Musinsa Standard Myeong-dong store climbed to 45 percent in May from 30.7 percent in March, when Musinsa opened its Myeong-dong store.

Sales generated by foreigners at the Hongdae store from January to May increased by 50 percent compared to the same period last year. As of May, foreigners accounted for around 30 percent of the sales.  

The Seongsu store also saw a steady rise in foreigners’ sales to 28.8 percent in May, up from 20.3 percent in March and 11.1 percent in January.  

As of May, the top five countries in terms of purchases at the shop were China at 18.4 percent, Taiwan at 15.7 percent, the United States at 12.4 percent, Singapore at 12 percent, and lastly, Japan at 9.4 percent, collectively amounting for 67.8 percent.  

CJ Olive Young said its first-quarter sales from foreign customers surged by 263 percent on year. Sales from Chinese customers rose by 673 percent, followed by Japan at 285 percent, the United States at 230 percent and Taiwan at 229 percent on year.  

The performance of stores in Myeong-dong and Hongdae, known as prime tourist spots in Seoul, is particularly noteworthy.

Combined sales at all five stores in Myeong-dong increased by 101 percent in the first quarter, while sales at all six stores in Hongdae rose by 48 percent.  

The popular dollar-shop chain Daiso has become an up-and-coming shopping place for foreigners. Between January and March this year, its overall overseas card sales and transactions increased by 76 percent and 61 percent on year, respectively.  

The most popular items were cosmetics and food products.

Daiso attributed its uptick in foreigners’ purchases to its cost-effective offerings, which led to frequent visits and purchases with the help of the rising influence of Korean beauty and food, according to the company’s spokesman.  

According to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute's "2024 First Quarter Preliminary Report on Foreign Tourists," 48.4 percent of foreign tourists chose Korea’s road shops as their top choice for shopping, followed by department stores at 35.9 percent, large shopping malls at 35.6 percent and duty-free shops at 30.1 percent, between January to March this year.

Road shops refer to independent and franchise stores run by retailers. 

Before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, duty-free shops at the airport were the second most popular shopping destination at 33.5 percent, but they were excluded from this year's survey.  

Additionally, 50.2 percent of foreign tourists chose road shops in March, up 5.4 percent from the same period last year. The preference for road shop shopping surpassed 50 percent for the first time on a monthly basis.

The most purchased items were perfumes and cosmetics at 67.7 percent, followed by food products at 58 percent, clothing at 48.8 percent, footwear at 14.3 percent and bags at 11.6 percent.

The increasing interest in Korean fashion and beauty brands among foreign tourists can also be attributed to the relatively low prices of the retailers compared to duty-free shops and department stores.

"Foreigners who experience cheap and high-quality products in Korea are likely to continue purchasing K-brand products through cost-friendly retailers,” an industry insider said.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

Businesses increasingly have chosen to stay open on the holiday, leading to what is now one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year.

Here’s what is open and closed this year on Memorial Day:

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

BANKS AND STOCK MARKET

U.S. stock markets and banks are closed Monday.

Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Memorial Day.

Warehouse membership club Costco said it would close on Memorial Day , but the vast majority of retailers will be open, with many trying to lure customers with big promotional sales. Hours may vary by location.

Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial opening of the summer travel season. Auto club AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday travel period, an increase of 4% from last year. If those projections are accurate, that would come close to 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day weekend travelers.

AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over the weekend — the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking it in 2000 — and that another 3.5 million people will travel by air.
