Top 13 Things to Do in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

best places visit kanyakumari

saiko3p / Getty Images

Kanyakumari, which was called Cape Comorin during the British rule of India, is a small coastal town in Tamil Nadu , near the Kerala border. It's renowned for being the southernmost point of India and the meeting point of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal.

The town has spiritual significance as the abode of the virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the divine Mother Goddess. Kanyakumari is the place where the goddess is believed to have done penance in order to get Lord Shiva to marry her, which means the town is a popular destination for pilgrims and devotees. People come from all over to bathe in the holy saltwater and make an offering at the temple, but there are many more things to do when visiting Kanyakumari. Read on to discover memorials, palaces, and natural wonders that are worth a side trip during your trip to this South Indian town.

Feel the Rush of Water at Courtallam Falls

yeSMK Photography / Getty Images

If you want to get out of the city, a trip to the roaring waters of Courtallam Falls is a great way to do just that. It takes about three hours to drive the 76 miles (123 kilometers) to the natural park, but once you get there, you'll find nine beautiful waterfalls that have been featured as a backdrop in many classic and contemporary Bollywood films. It was also a subject that the poet Thirukudarasappa Kavirayar sang about in his work, "Kutraala Kuravanji." In the summer, you may be able to witness Saral Vizha, an eight-day festival where people come to bathe in the falls, whose water is said to contain therapeutic properties. The nearest town is Tenkasi, which also has a train station if you prefer to travel by rail.

Savor the Local Cuisine

SUSANSAM / Getty Images

Every region of India can proudly present its most treasured dishes, and Tamil Nadu and the town of Kanyakumari are no different. Here, you can try everything from savory appam pancakes, which are made from fermented rice batter and coconut milk, to dishes like maravazhi kilangu, which is a boiled tapioca root with fish curry. You can also expect to find a lot of jackfruit and banana used in the local cuisine, with pazha bajji— ripe bananas dipped in batter and fried in hot oil—a must-try treat. To wash it all down, try some tropical drinks like Nungu Sarbath , a palm fruit-based juice.

Visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial

AAGGraphics / Getty Images

Revered Indian poet and Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari in 1892, towards the end of an extensive trip across India as a wandering monk. His transformation into an influential leader and reformer is attributed to the three days he spent meditating on a large offshore rock, where Goddess Kanya Kumari is said to have carried out part of her penance by standing on one foot. According to ancient Hindu texts, the Puranas , the rock was blessed by the touch of her foot.

A memorial was built on the rock in 1970 to honor Swami Vivekananda. It consists of a pavilion with a life-size bronze statue of Swami, a hall with information about his life, and a meditation area. There's also a carving of the Goddess' foot on the rock.

Visit the Thiruvalluvar Statue

A towering statue of the great Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar stands on a smaller neighboring rock, just off the coast of Kanyakumari. The foundation stone was laid in 1979 and the work was completed 20 years later, in 1999. Ferries to Vivekananda Rock Memorial stop at the Thiruvalluvar statue afterward if the tide permits. It's possible to go inside the base of the statue and climb the stairs up to its feet for a superb view, as long as it's not closed for periodic maintenance.

Bathe at Triveni Sangam

The remarkable confluence where the oceans merge, known as Triveni Sangam, is considered to be powerful and sacred. A dip in the water is said to wash away all sins and provide liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Even if you don't want to participate in the ritual, it's still worth spending some time at this unique place and contemplating its essence. Depending on the tide and weather, you may even be able to distinguish the oceans from each other, based on variations in their shades of blue.

Watch the Sunrise and Sunset

ajijchan / Getty Images

Priceless sunrises and sunsets, on Kanyakumari's watery horizon, are among the finest in India. Sunrise, alongside the Thiruvalluvar statue, is arguably the most majestic of the two. However, sunsets are particularly special on full moon nights, when the moon rises from the sea opposite the setting sun at about the same time. The following morning, it's possible to see the sun rising and the full moon setting together. Seaside sunset views are best enjoyed from the beach between December and February (and are only really visible from mid-October to mid-March).

Pay Your Respects to Goddess Kanya Kumari

The town's 3,000-year-old Kumari Amman Temple (also known as Arulmigu Bhagavathy Amman Temple) is dedicated to Goddess Kanya Kumari, who is worshiped as a great protector after destroying the mighty demon king Banasura. This important temple sits by the sea near Triveni Sangam and has a beautiful black stone idol of the goddess. The standout feature is her sparkling bejeweled nose ring. Non-Hindus are allowed to enter the temple, but photography is prohibited. If visiting in October, try to visit during the Navratri Festival .

See Where Gandhi's Ashes Were Kept

Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari a couple of times, and some of his ashes were scattered into the sea there on February 12, 1948. A memorial was later constructed at the location where the ashes were kept for public viewing, near Kumari Amman Temple. Its architecture resembles that of temples in Odisha and the design is quite exceptional. Every year at noon on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, the sun's rays fall through a hole in the temple's roof and onto the place where the ashes sat in an urn.

Browse the Shops and Stalls

Louis Jawitz / Getty Images

Shells, painted shells, handicrafts made from shells, and products decorated with shells dominate the souvenir selection at Kanyakumari. They're sold everywhere and collectors will love them! You can even get a customized shell with your name engraved on it. Vendors line the seafront walkway with an array of colossal shells. You'll find more in the shops on atmospheric Sannathi Street, which is the main market area that leads to Kumari Amman Temple. This market has shops selling lovely woven handloom saris as well.

About 15 minutes north of Kanyakumari, the 18th-century Vattakottai Fort dates back to the rule of the Venad kings of Travancore who developed the area as a coastal military base. It was the last seaside fort they built and it is now being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Be Dazzled at Thovalai Flower Market

Jim Simmen / Getty Images

You probably wouldn't expect one of Asia's largest wholesale flower markets to be in a village 30 minutes north of Kanyakumari. The area around Thovalai specializes in growing flowers, particularly an unusual variety of jasmine, and the market there brims with piles of scented buds. Vibrant roses and marigolds add to the colorful spectacle. The market opens before sunrise, so plan to get there early before all the best flowers are gone.

Drive Through One of the World's Largest Wind Farms

Manish / Getty Images

If you're interested in renewable energy, you can combine a trip to the Thovalai flower market with a drive through Muppandal Wind Farm by continuing about 15 minutes further along National Highway 944. Notably, it's one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world and India's biggest source of wind energy.

Its motley assembly of more than 3,000 turbines stretches for miles, curiously intermingled with palm trees and banana plants. The farm produces 1,500 megawatts of power in total; to put that into perspective, a single 2-megawatt wind turbine can power 400 houses. The fact that the turbines are sponsored and commissioned by private companies accounts for the lack of uniformity in their design.

The town of Kanyakumari is named after the Hindu Goddess Kanya Kumari, an incarnation of the divine Mother Goddess. A popular pilgrimage destination, devotees travel to Kanyakumari to make an offering at the Bhagavati Kumari Amman temple, which is dedicated to the virgin Goddess. Kanyakumari is also famous for being the southernmost point in India.

The best time to visit Kanyakumari is from October to March, when average highs are around 89 degrees F and average lows are around 63 degrees F. October is a particularly popular month to visit thanks to the three-day Cape Festival. In addition to hosting cultural programs like traditional dances, the festival invites people to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean meet.

Tamil and Malayalam are the two most commonly spoken languages in Kanyakumari.

8 Places to visit in Kanyakumari in a day

On our recent trip to Kerala, we traveled from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari by road. Although, we have been planning a trip from Bangalore to Kanyakumari for quiet a long time. And our initial plan was to cover Kanyakumari along with Rameshwaram on our 5 days trip to Madurai and Rameshwaram . But we rather ended up exploring the Karaikudi region and enjoying the Chettinad Tourism and Thanjavur Brihadeeshwara Temple. As a result, we had to leave Kanyakumari from our trip itinerary.

best places visit kanyakumari

So, this time around, when we planned our road trip across Kerala, we decided to add Kanyakumari to it. Although we could only spare one day to spend in Kanyakumari before driving to Madurai for a night halt there. On this trip, along with Kanyakumari we also drove through Coimbatore, Palakkad, Athirapally, Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey, Varkala and Kovalam.

Coming back to our trip to Kanyakumari, let me summarise here the best places to visit in Kanyakumari in one day, like we did. The good thing is that all the major places to visit in Kanyakumari are very close to each other. So, you can easily cover them in a short span of time.

Kanykumari is the southern most town of India. It is a place where the three seas from three different directions surrounding the Indian Peninsula meet – the Arabian sea from west, the Indian Ocean from South and the Bay of Bengal from east. Also, Kanyakumari is a very sacred Hindu pilgrimage destination with very old temples to visit. So, now that we have quickly established the significance of Kanyakumari in India, let’s dive right into our list of places to visit in Kanyakumari in one day.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

A beautiful Travancore era palace that is also known as Kalkulam Palace, Padmanabhapuram Palace was our first stop on our road trip from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari. Although this palace lies in Tamil Nadu, it is maintained by the Kerala government. Because earlier this palace was under the jurisdiction of Travancore kingdom in Kerala. Constructed around 1601 CE, possibly Padmanabhapuram Palace is one of the oldest palaces in India. . The  name of the palace is derived from “Padmanabha” , a form of Lord Vishnu.

Sunset point Kanyakumari

Of all the places in India, the sunsets of Kanyakumari are considered one of the most beautiful. Alas, we couldn’t stay here till sunset. But, if you are staying overnight in Kanyakumari, you should definitely visit this site towards the evening and observe the sunset from here. Towards sunset, the sky gets coloured in so many hues with the effect of water from all different sides and the uninterrupted view of the setting sun at the juncture of the three seas !

Kanyakumari Lighthouse

Very near to sunset point lies Kanyakumari Lighthouse. Although not as famous as the lighthouse of Kovalam. But it is definitely as beautiful. So, you can walk upto the lighthouse next.

Arulmigu Bhagavathy Amman Aalayam

One of the most important temples of Kanyakumari is Arulmigu Bhagavathy Amman Aalayam. This temple is located right near the Kanyakumari beach, again on a walking distance. So, from the beach, you can head here and visit the temple. Or, you can visit the temple first and then head to the beach. Whatever suits you.

The temple is thousands of years old. And it is located right on the confluence of the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea. The architecture of the temple is beautiful beyond words. It is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kumari. And thus the name of the town “Kanyakumari”. Actually this temple is one of the 108 “ Shakti Peethas ” of India. A visit to this temple is believed to bring great luck and prosperity.

Vivekanand Rock Memorial

One of the most popular places in Kanyakumari is Vivekanand Rock Memorial. Situated on a rock right in the middle of the ocean, the Vivekanand Rock Memorial is built in honour of Swamy Vivekanand who meditated for 3 days at a stretch here. You can buy the round trip ticket to the Vivekanand Rock Memorial from the ticket counter priced at INR 50. The ticket counter is located near Kanyakumari beach. From here, regular ferries ply to the Vivekanand Rock Memorial. The only other time we had an experience similar to the one being here was on our trip to Andaman Islands .

best places visit kanyakumari

Once to step on the memorial, it is a magical feeling being in the center of the ocean that you get! So, I made it a priority to be able to make it here on my trip to Kanyakumari.

Thiruvalluvar Statue

Located on another rock right besides Vivekanand Rock Memorial is Thuruvalluvar Statue. The ferry can next take you here before returning back to the mainland. The statue is a massive 133 ft high one and weighs 7000 tonnes ! Thiruvalluvar statue signifies that wealth and love should be earned and enjoyed on the solid foundation of ethical virtues. The island rocks on which it lies are around 400m from the coastline of Kanyakumari.

Vattakottai Fort

If possible, you can take a little detour from the main town of Kanyakumari and visit the Vattakottai Fort. Another old fort of the region which is mostly dilapidated now. But provides beautiful views of the surrounding green meadows from atop.

More places to visit in Kanyakumari

It will be simply impossible to accommodate any further sight seeing in your itinerary until either you are planning to halt in Kanyakumari itself for the night. Or, if you have more days added to your Kanyakumari trip plan. A perfect Kanyakumari trip itinerary should include at least 2 nights stay at Kanyakumari. However, our Kanyakumari trip experience was a very unique one wherein we covered all the above places in transit from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari to Madurai. If you do have time in Kanyakumari, you can visit these places as well:

Mahatma Gandhi Mandapa, Kanyakumari

This marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were held after his death. The mandapam is built around the place. And faces the sea.

Our Lady of Ransom Shrine, Kanyakumari

It is a catholic church located in the center of Kanyakumari and one of the most beautiful churches of the area.

Kanyakumari Food Court

Although not a point to visit, you will cross it while visiting the other points. As it is located on the main Kanyakumari street connecting the memorial square , temple , Vivekananda Rock Ferry and all the other places. So, you can plan for your lunch here.

Tsunami Memorial Park

On 26th Dec 2004 a massive tsunami had hit east and south coast of India. There were lasting impacts on Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and parts of Kerala. Some of the islands in Andaman & Nicobar islands group got submersed in water forever. And many lives were lost. The Tsunami Memorial Park in Kanyakumari commemorates the people of Kanyakumari and around who lost their lives to the tsunami.

Sunrise View

Since Kanyakumari is located on the southern most tip of India at the conjuncture of two seas and one ocean, it is a perfect place where you can the sun both rise as well as set into the sea. So, adjacent to the sunset view point, there is another point where you can capture extremely beautiful sunrises. This is called the sunrise view point. And is located almost on the Kanyakumari beach only. Although I didn’t view a sunrise here, I can imagine how beautiful it must be at the confluence of 3 vast seas !!

The hidden twin beach

Located close to the Bhagavathy Amman Temple, Kanyakumari and also very near to the Kanyakumari bus station, the hidden twin beach is a very beautiful stretch of coastline in Kanyakumari. Those visiting the Vivekanand Rock memorial often stop here to enjoy the natural landscape here. It is also one of the few beaches in India where facilities are present to sit and relax and enjoy nature.

Eco Park Kanyakumari

A beautiful park developed in Kanyakumari by the department of horticulture. Reminds me of some of the most beautiful landscaped gardens of South India that I have visited like the botanical garden in Pondicherry and the Brindavan Gardens in Mysore.

Entry fee to Eco Park Kanyakumari : INR 20 per adult, free for kids

Timing of eco park Kanyakumari : 11:00 am – 7:30 pm all days of the week

There are many budget accommodations across the town of Kanyakumari. And then there are many luxury resorts by the beach as well. You can plan to stay in any of these based on your budget. here’s a list of hotels in Kanyakumari to browse through. We stayed in Thiruvananthapuram at the Vivanta by Taj Hotel. And from there, we traveled to Kanyakumari in the morning. And after covering the places to visit in Kanyakumari in one day as per our plan, around 2:30pm, we proceeded for Madurai. So, we really didn’t stay in Kanyakumari. In Madurai, we stayed at hotel Amika which was really close to the NH 44. So, we could avoid navigating the city crowd when we started on our trip back home from Madurai then next day.

Interesting Fact about Kanyakumari

The city Kanyakumari gets its name after Goddess Kanya Kumari, the adolescent form of Goddess Parvati.

It is believed that Lord Shiva did not turn up to marry Devi Kanya Kumari on the decided auspicious day which annoyed her a lot. She threw all the food and broke the bangles.

She remained unmarried and even killed the demon Banasura. The Devi is worshiped in Kanyakumari at the temple which is also one of the Shakti Peeths of India.

A small city at the southernmost tip of India is a popular tourist destination for both spiritual and tourist reasons.

Most of the places to visit in Kanyakumari are within walking distance of each other and one day is good enough to explore this city.

So this list of Kanyakumari tourist places can help you plan a 1-day itinerary to Kanyakumari.

1. Vivekananda Rock Memorial

vivekananda memorial kanyakumari

The most iconic building of Kanyakumari is the Vivekananda memorial built on a huge stone on an island that is a stone’s throw away from the shore.

It is believed that Swami Vivekananda attained enlightenment on this rock before visiting Chicago.

The temple also houses a meditation hall and bookstore that can be explored.

Note: Small kids are not allowed in the meditation hall.

The rock even holds religious significance as it is believed that Devi Kanyakumari had stepped on this rock and blessed the place.

The Sripada Mandapam is the temple within the complex where the rock is kept with the impressions of Devi footprints .

Note: Photography is prohibited inside the mandapams/halls.

There is a sun clock at one end of the complex that is interesting to see. It actually shows the time of sunrise throughout the year.

Kanyakumari sunrise calendar at Vivekananda memorial

Standing tall amidst the ocean, it is a great place to witness the waves from the three seas crashing.

We would advise you to visit the memorial in the morning as the stone floors get burning hot during the afternoon and it becomes difficult to walk barefoot. Try and walk over the white paint to avoid sunburns.

The rock memorial can be reached by a small ferry ride from the shore. There might be a long line for the ferry, so better to take that into account.

There are ferry charges apart from the entrance fees to the Vivekananda memorial.

Timings: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Entrance fees – INR 10 per person

Ferry charges – INR 20 per person

2. Thiruvalluvar Statue

Kanyakumari Thiruvalluvar Statue

Near the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, you’ll find a towering 133-foot stone statue of the celebrated Tamil poet Valluvar. This statue is a well-known tourist attraction in Kanyakumari.

Kanyakumari Triveni sangam

The only place in the world where the confluence of the three seas – the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal with the Indian ocean happens is at Kanyakumari, called the Triveni Sangam ( Tri means three, Veni means a stream of water and Sangam means confluence). Being famous among tourists for its spectacular sight, it is a very popular pilgrim spot as well. People believe that bathing in this holy water will wash away their sins.

I don’t know about washing away the sins, but it’s great to at least dip your feet on the hot day. There are a few steps that lead to a rocky beach.

Note: There aren’t clean changing rooms around.

4. Gandhi Memorial

gandhi memorial kanyakumari tamil nadu

A beautiful architectural building close to the Kanyakumari beach is the Gandhi memorial .

This is the place where Gandhiji’s ashes were kept for public viewing before immersing in the seas.

The architecture is special as on October 2nd (the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi), the sun’s rays fall from a hole in the roof at the place where the ashes were kept.

5. KanyaKumari Temple /Sri Bhagvathy Amman temple

The 3000-year-old Bhagvathy Amman temple dedicated to the Goddess Kanya Kumari is very popular and thronged by the disciples of the Devi, making it one of the most popular tourist places in Kanyakumari.

This temple is also significant as is one of the Shakti Peeths in Indian subcontinents. It is believed that out of all the body parts, the spine of Goddess Sati fell at this place. The main sanctum is dimly lit with oil lamps and has a black stone idol of the goddess holding a rosary in one hand.

One thing that catches sight is the sparkling nose ring. There are some interesting stories associated with it as well. Sitting by the sea, the temple can be viewed from the Vivekananda memorial and Thiruvallur statue.

The temple closes in the afternoon and can’t be visited until the evening.

Timings: 4 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Note: Men have to be a bare chest in order to enter the temple.

6. Kanyakumari Beach

Adjacent to the Bhagavathy Amman temple is the Kanyakumari beach . Not a very big beach though, is popular among tourists for both spiritual and pleasure reasons.

There were hawkers around and we did not find the beach very clean.

7. Kanyakumari Sunrise and Sunset

Kanyakumari sunrise

Kanyakumari, being the southernmost tip of the Indian peninsula, watching the sunrise or sunset is special.

Although sunrise can be watched from many places across the city, there is a Sunrise Point on the Kanyakumari beach.

With the sun rising from the horizon over the ocean behind the Vivekananda memorial and statue, it is a sight to behold.

The sunset can be watched from the Kanyakumari beach as well but there is a Sunset point about 3 km away from the sunrise point.

The sunset and sunrise at Kanyakumari can even be viewed from the View Tower which gives a 360-degree view of the landscape and the mesmerizing sun painting the sky.

8. Souvenir Shopping near Kanyakumari Temple

After exploring this small significant town it is time to indulge in some shopping of souvenirs. There are many small shops lined beside the beach and close to the Vivekananda memorial jetty point. Right from stuff made of seashells to handicrafts to traditional clothes , there is a wide variety to shop for.

Remember: Don’t forget to bargain to get the best deal.

9. Bharat Mata Temple

Indians idolize their country not just as a piece of land, but as their mother, Bharat Mata, and treat her like a goddess.

Bharat ~ India and Mata ~ mother

To show gratitude and love, there is a Bharat Mata temple in the city. The first thing that catches the eye is the beautiful garden outside the temple.

The temple has a huge idol of Bharat Mata (Mother India). It even has the story of Ramayan beautifully depicted in pictures.

Ticket: INR 30

There is public parking available close to the beach. All the major places are at walking distance from the spot.

Best time to visit Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari experiences a tropical climate with very hot summers. The best time to visit is winter from November to March. The weather becomes pleasant with maximum temperatures ranging from 20 – 28 degrees Celsius. The monsoon time is beautiful to watch the confluence of the 3 seas but it gets humid around that time.

Things you Must Take Care of while visiting Kanyakumari

  • Since it is very hot and humid, do wear caps and sunglasses.
  • Apply sunscreen before stepping out in sun.
  • Try to visit the Vivekanand memorial in the morning or evening as the floor gets very hot in the afternoon and you need to be barefoot.
  • There can be a long queue for the ferry both ways, so keep that in mind while planning.
  • Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Vivekananda memorial and Bhagvathy Amman temple. But I was saddened to see social media addicts clicking pictures inside the Vivekananda hall, in spite of the instructions.

Kanyakumari is a perfect day trip option or a 2-day trip from Trivandrum about 100 km far. Kanyakumari must be added to your Kerala itinerary if visiting South Kerala.

It is best to leave early in the morning from Trivandrum for the 2 1/2-hour rides.

One thing that we noticed as we approached Kanyakumari was fish drying outside the houses, on roofs, and on empty lands.

PM Modi to meditate on Kanyakumari's Vivekananda Memorial Rock: Why is the location special?

 alt=

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on May 30, ahead of India's Lok Sabha poll results which will be declared on June 4. He is speculated to stay there for two days, to meditate at the renowned Vivekananda Rock Memorial, which is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda. As per reports, Modi will reach Kanyakumari on May 30 and will head to the memorial on May 31, for a day-long meditation. Even before, he had meditated in places like Kedarnath before the counting for 2019's Lok Sabha elections. Before leaving for his historic address at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893, it is believed that Swami Vivekananda meditated on this rock, because of which the spot was named after him.

What's special about the spot?  The Vivekananda Rock Memorial, designed by the renowned architect Eknath Ranade,  is located in the sea on an island rock, amidst the confluence of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. It's a popular spot for tourists to enjoy its stunning sunrise and sunset. It consists of the Vivekananda Mandapam, which houses a bronze statue of Vivekananda and the Shripada Mandapam, which enshrines footprints believed to be of Goddess Kanyakumari. Many spiritually inclined people visit the spot seeking solace and meditation. The area also has a functioning lighthouse, frequented by tourists.

How to reach the island? Visitors access the memorial via a short boat ride, operated by local authorities. It is available from early morning to late afternoon. Interestingly, the ticket for the boat ride also includes entry to the memorial and nearby tourist spots.

'Does Anyone Get Cameras For Meditation': Mamata To Complain To EC If Modi's Kanyakumari Trip Televised

PM Modi is scheduled to meditate at the Rock Memorial, a monument built in tribute to Swami Vivekananda, in Kerala's Kanyakumari following the culmination of the Lok Sabha polls campaign on May 30.

Mamata Banerjee pm narendra Modi Kerala Kanyakumari election commission west bengal 'Does Anyone Get Cameras For Meditation': Mamata To Complain To EC If Modi's Kanyakumari Trip Televised

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) will complain to the Election Commission if Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meditation in Kanyakumari is televised over alleged violation of the election Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

She also took a jibe at the prime minister asking if anyone has to get cameras for doing meditation.

"We will complain. He can meditate, but it cannot be aired on television," she said, claiming that this will amount to violation of the MCC.

"Does anyone have to get cameras for doing meditation?" she asked, adding that it was a way of canvassing during the silence period between the end of the campaign and the poll date.

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi also claimed that PM Modi's meditation on May 30 is a violation of the MCC and added the party has complained regarding it.

"The PM will start his meditation from the evening of May 30 and we have complained about that. We all know that the silence period will begin from May 30 and thus his declaration is a violation of the MCC. The PM can start his meditation after 24-48 hours, which is from the evening of June 1. Otherwise, if he wants to meditate from May 30, then the ECI should ensure that this is not broadcast by the TV or print media," Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said after leading a party delegation to meet the ECI.

According to BJP leaders, PM Modi will meditate from May 30 evening to June 1 evening at Dhyana Mandapam, the place where Vivekananda is believed to have had a divine vision about 'Bharat Mata'.

Speaking at an election meeting on the same ground where the PM held a rally on Tuesday in favour of Jadavpur constituency's BJP candidate, Mamata claimed that the PM goes into meditation for 48 hours before the final phase of polling in every election.

"The Prime Minister had undertaken a similar meditation exercise in a Kedarnath cave after the 2019 election campaign. If they (BJP) return to power this time, there won't be any political party, elections, independence, religion, humanity or culture," she said, according to PTI.

The TMC supremo sought to dismiss Modi's claim that the BJP will achieve the best results in Bengal this election, asserting, "This means they have lost; they will get rosogolla (zero) in Bengal."

She said the TMC will support the opposition INDIA alliance in forming a government in Delhi and urged the people not to vote for the CPI(M) or Congress in Bengal as "it will help the BJP."

Accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of appeasement politics, PM Modi, addressing a poll meeting earlier in the day in Kakdwip, said, "Reservations were looted in West Bengal and false OBC certificates were issued to Muslims."

He also claimed that the TMC was misleading Muslims by spreading false information regarding the court's verdict. Accusing the BJP of embarking on a slander campaign against the TMC, Banerjee claimed that her party has had to fight against Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),  Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (IT).

The best things to do and places to visit in Moscow, Russia

Updated On 14th October, 2021

While Moscow isn’t always at the top of everyone’s Europe bucket list , it’s certainly one of the best places to visit in Europe if you’re looking for a more alternative adventure! In this blog post I plan on sharing some of the free things to do in Moscow, as well as the best places to visit in Moscow, so that you can enjoy some of the best things to do in Russia!

Moscow, the capital of Russia, sits in the European part of the country. It’s an incredibly beautiful city, which I personally found to be more beautiful than Saint Petersburg (which is often people’s preference). The capital is certainly a lot busier, and less laid back than Saint Petersburg , but it’s a much more colourful and vibrant city, full of stunning and unique architecture.

Visiting famous landmarks such as The Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral, enjoying some of the green space in Gorky Park, watching a ballet in the Bolshoi Theatre… these are just a few reasons that you should visit Moscow! On top of that, because of visa restrictions (we’ll get onto that later), it’s also one of the most unique destinations in Europe.

There is a common misconception that Moscow is a dangerous city, but now that I’ve visited, I don’t believe this to be true. I would say the same rules apply here as to other large cities: avoid walking in dark areas alone at night, keep an eye on your belongings on public transport, and be streetwise. There’s no reason to avoid visiting this energetic city and miss out on these amazing things to do in Moscow!

It would take months if you wanted to truly explore Moscow because it’s a huge city, but I’m going to share some of my favourite things to do in Moscow and places to visit in Moscow so that you can prepare for your upcoming adventure! Even if you’re only there for a few days, you should be able to fit in these highlights from my trip.

Where is Moscow?

If you’re wondering ‘Where is Moscow, Russia?’ then you’ve come to the right place! Moscow in in west Russia, the European part, and it’s the capital city.

How do you get to Moscow?

Getting a visa for moscow:.

To get into Russia, you need to get a visa. The processing time is approximately 20 days, and you’ll need to have your fingerprints taken at a visa centre in London , Edinburgh or Manchester. You can find out more about getting a visa for Russia here.

Getting to Moscow:

Once you’ve got your visa, the easiest way to get to Moscow from the UK is by flying. Direct flights between London and Moscow take just under four hours, and with an airport layover you’re looking at a 6-7 hour trip. You can also fly in from many other major European and international cities.

16 best places to visit in Moscow...

1. st basil’s cathedral.

The most iconic building in Russia and one of the most iconic buildings in the world. St Basil’s Cathedral is one of the best places to visit in Moscow, if not the best!

St Basil’s is situated on Red Square, where you’ll also find many other popular places to visit in Moscow. In my opinion this still stands out against them all. There’s something about the multi coloured domes against the Moscow skyline that I found quite spectacular.

Although I’d already been in Russia for several days, it wasn’t until I was at this amazing piece of architecture that I really felt I was in Russia.

The cathedral was built by order of Ivan the Terrible, and apparently after the architect completed it, Ivan blinded him so that he could never build anything more beautiful. Whether or not this story is true, it certainly adds a bittersweet feeling as you stand admiring the beauty of St Basil’s Cathedral.

Inside is a museum displaying many historic items once used at the cathedral, which costs 700 rubles to enter. In my opinion it’s worth the entry fee, as simply seeing the ornate interior walls is a spectacle in itself.

2. The Kremlin

This historic fortress that sits on Red Square is probably the largest landmark and one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. It’s the official residence of the President, although he doesn’t actually live there. It’s been rebuilt many times since it was first constructed in 1147 out of wood, before Ivan III the Great ordered it to be made from stone, which is the Kremlin you’ll recognise today.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

This place is huge, and there’s quite a lot to see. The first problem I had was finding where the entrance was. Even though I had a pre-booked ticket, I was then told I still had to visit the ticket office to exchange it for another ticket. I also needed my passport, so make sure you have yours if you plan to visit the Kremlin. After a lengthy queue I finally had a ticket I could use to enter the Kremlin, and had to go through security. The security here is thorough, so make sure you don’t take too much in with you. I had my pockets full, and it was a nightmare emptying them and explaining each item, before I was finally allowed in. Once inside you can pay for extra tickets to visit the various museums, however there’s also quite a lot to see simply on the grounds if you don’t want to spend too much.

See more tips for travelling on a budget here.

There’s so much to see here, including The Assumption Cathedral, Ivan the Great Bell Tower Complex, the Grand Kremlin Palace, the Armoury Chamber and Diamond Fund. There is also the Tsar Cannon (a huge artillery cannon), and the Tsar Bell. The Tsar Bell is the largest bell in the world. An incident with a fire and water being poured over the bell caused it to crack and for a slab to break off from it, which can now be seen propped up next to it.

As you walk around the grounds you’ll hear the sound of whistles. The guards patrolling the area will blow a whistle at anyone walking where they shouldn’t. Even if it’s just on the grass, or towards more restricted areas. This can sometimes be funny to watch, as often the tourists will be in a world of their own whilst a guard is blowing a whistle at them. Sometimes a guard will be stood face to face with a tourist angrily blowing their whistle before the tourist realises they need to get back onto the main path.

This is perhaps one of the more unusual places to visit in Moscow! Gum is a huge department store situated on Red Square. It’s an interesting department store to walk around, with several levels, although the shops inside are certainly quite pricey. It’s a beautiful building when it’s lit up at night, and it seems to fit in nicely amongst the other famous sights on Red Square. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything here, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to take a quick look inside, although bear in mind there are usually security checks before entering.

4. State Historical Museum

The large crimson building on Red Square is now the State Historical Museum. It was originally the first pharmacy in Russia, and later a University before finally becoming the museum it is today.

Unfortunately I didn’t go inside as my time was limited and there was so much else I wanted to see, but if you have the time I think it would be one of the best things to do in Moscow. There are items dating back to the 6th century, and maybe even further. There’s also a library inside storing many ancient manuscripts and the largest coin collection in Russia.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

5. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi means big in Russian, so it roughly translates to large theatre. The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. The exterior of the building is an impressive sight, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow, and it’s certainly worth admiring from the outside. There are guided tours of the interior, but if you really want to experience the theatre, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to watch a ballet here.

I was torn between booking a seat, but the ballets were very expensive. I’d have liked to have seen “Swan Lake”, (as at least I may have recognised some of the music). Unfortunately there were no performances on the days I was in Moscow, so I decided to pass. But if I return to Russia, then watching a ballet will be on my list of things to do.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

6. Sparrow Hills

If you want a good view of the city, then Sparrow Hills is one of the best places to visit in Moscow. It’s a bit of a trek outside of the centre, but if you have the time then it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. There’s a viewing platform here which gives you fantastic panoramic views of Moscow.

Nearby you’ll see the magnificent Moscow State University building, which is one of the seven sisters of Moscow.

7. Seven Sisters

Whilst in Moscow, you’ll no doubt notice these magnificent soviet skyscrapers dotted around the city. At the time of construction they were the tallest buildings in Europe, Moscow State University being so until 1997. There are, as the name suggests, seven in total, which are: Hotel Ukraina, Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Apartments, the Kudrinskaya Square Building, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow State University, and the Red Gates Administrative Building.

If you visit Sparrow Hills, then you’ll come across Moscow State University, but I’m certain as you explore the city, you’ll see more of these giants against the Moscow skyline. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to see if you can locate all seven as you wander round the city!

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

8. Nikolskaya Street

The start of this street is found by Red Square. It’s one of the most prominent pedestrianised streets in Moscow, filled with shops, restaurants and bars, so one of the best places to visit in Moscow if you’re looking for a bite to eat or some souvenirs!

What makes this street extra special are the thousands of bright lights in the sky above. After dark it looks simply magical with the many colourful lights overhead as you walk beneath them. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to visit Nikolskaya Street after dark and see them for yourself. It almost feels like Christmas in London!

There is another street nearby which also features similar lights, “Kuznetskiy Most”, which is also quite beautiful, but I thought “Nikolskaya Street” was ever slightly more impressive.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

9. Izmailovo Kremlin and Izmaylovskiy Bazar

Did you know that The Kremlin in Red Square is not the only Kremlin in Moscow? Kremlin actually means a type of fortress, so there are many in Russia.

The Izmailovo Kremlin is a fairly new addition to the city, having been built in 2007 as a cultural centre. With its multitude of colours and historic style, it has a real fairytale feel to it. There are several small museums here for you to explore, devoted to subjects such as Russian folk art, vodka and bread (yes, bread). Visiting these is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Moscow!

It’s a little way out of the centre, but it’s an interesting place to visit in Moscow to see something a little bit different, and it won’t be as overcrowded with tourists.

Next to the Izmailovo Kremlin is the best market in Moscow for souvenirs. You’ll find good and poor quality items, but you’ll certainly pick up a bargain if you take your time and haggle for a good price. Many of the items here you’ll get for half the price you would in souvenir shops in the city centre. It’s here that I picked up several Matryoshka dolls for a very good price. I think I’d have paid more than double, or possibly even triple if I’d have bought them elsewhere.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

10. Izmailovsky Park

Not too far from Izmailovo Kremlin you’ll find this huge park, one of the prettiest places to visit in Moscow. It’s easy to get lost here, so try to make sure you keep track of where you entered if you plan to go back the same way. There’s a lot to see in this park, a round pond, ferris wheel, playgrounds and sports grounds, shooting galleries, cinemas and a skate park.

There are often festivals, concerts and exhibitions at the park, on top of firework displays and dance parties.

The main reason I chose to visit the park was to find the painted trees. A local artist “Yevgenia Khlynina” has been painting on trees in this park, and one of the best things to do in Moscow is to explore the park looking for them. One of the most famous pieces of hers is the “Hedgehog in the Fog” from a famous soviet cartoon.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

11. Gorky Park

The most famous park in Moscow is named after the writer “Maxim Gorky”. Although it’s likely you’ve heard it mentioned in the song “Wind of Change” by “The Scorpions”.

There’s lots to do and see in the park with sports facilities and exhibitions. During the summer months this is one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for things to do in Moscow; there are often open air concerts and an open air cinema. There are many statues and sculptures in the park, including a small sculpture park area which features many interesting pieces.

One piece of advice: don’t visit Gorky Park or any other parks on 2nd August if you’re in Russia. 2nd August is Paratrooper day, which usually encourages a lot of drinking in the park, which is not always very welcoming.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

12. Arbat Street

One of the oldest and busiest streets in Moscow, and the most famous pedestrian street in the city. Arbat is one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. There are several shops including many dedicated to souvenirs, but although these will have a good range of goods, they will be quite expensive . You may see street performers and buskers, and there are often poets reciting famous works, if not their own works.

It’s within walking distance from the Kremlin, which should only take around 10 minutes.

There are actually two streets with this name, Old Arbat Street and New Arbat Street. Old Arbat Street is where you’ll find the pedestrianised area. New Arbat Street is a separate street which runs alongside a main road, filled with many bars and restaurants.

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

13. Metro station art

The best way to get around Moscow is by using the metro, and the metro is a tourist attraction in itself.

Although I obviously didn’t visit every metro station, I believe that every single station is unique in its own beautiful way. Many of the stations I passed through were impressive, quirky or simply jaw dropping. You’ll more than likely pass through many of them on the way to other sights, but I’d recommend the following:  Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Teatralnaya, Arbatskaya, Prospekt Mira and Ploschad Revolutsii (be sure to pet the dog statue for good luck).

There are of course many others for you to explore, but these are the ones I considered to be some of the most impressive places to visit in Moscow (even if they’re only metro stations!).

The best things to do in Moscow: my favourite places to visit in Moscow

VDNKh is an exhibition centre with many monuments and museums. Now that it’s combined with the Botanical Garden and Ostankino Park, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to spend the day at this recreational centre enjoying a mix of nature and culture. The most popular museum in the complex which you shouldn’t miss on your trip to Moscow is the Museum of Cosmonautics.

15. Lenin's Mausoleum

Despite requesting to be buried with his mum in St Petersburg, it is at the foot of the Kremlin on Red Sqaure that you will find Lenin’s Mausoleum, where Vladimir Ilych Lenin has been frozen in time since 1924. It’s only open for a few hours a few times per week. Photography is not allowed, and you should line up on the western corner of the square (near Alexander Garden) to wait you turn to see the embalmed body.

16. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow. Located south west of the centre you’ll find this stunning monastery. Inside you’ll find a cathedral and several churches, surrounded by high walls and 12 towers.

As 2 days os really short, be sure to choose an accommodation in the best districts where to stay in Moscow .

Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow

Iconic place and one of the must-see places in Moscow and even in Russia! Besides, if there was only one place to visit in Moscow in 2 days, this place would then be Red Square, without hesitation. Therefore, starting the city tour with Red Square is ideal . Several buildings are on the square, but not all of them have to be visited. Check out my blog post about Moscow’s Red Square in detail to learn more and not miss anything.

Red Square Moscow

Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside

Even more emblematic than Moscow’s Red Square! Built in the middle of the 16th century under the orders of Tsar Ivan Le Terrible, this cathedral is one of the most beautiful monuments of Orthodox art, and definitely one of the unmissable places in Moscow. Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside is one of the most beautiful things to do in Moscow!

  • Visit estimate time : 1h30
  • Entry ticket : 700 RUB. Tickets can be purchased on the cathedral’s official website 45 days before the tour.
  • Audio guide (recommended): 500 RUB

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

What to do in Moscow

See the Bolshoi Theatre and discover the Kuznetsky Most district

The Bolshoi Theatre is the most famous Russian theater in the world. The most economical way to see a presentation at the Bolshoi Theater is to take the tickets on the theater’s official website in advance, so here is our tutorial to help you: How to buy entrance tickets to the Bolshoi? In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets

In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

best places visit kanyakumari

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

best places visit kanyakumari

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

best places visit kanyakumari

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

best places visit kanyakumari

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Explained: The significance of Kanyakumari's Vivekananda Rock where PM Modi will meditate

Opposition up in arms against PM Modi’s side sea meditation plans

Lakshmi Subramanian

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Kanyakumari on May 30 to be on a three-day meditation at the Dhyan Mandapam in Vivekananda Rock in Kanyakumari. Situated adjacent to the sky-high monolithic statue of saint Thiruvalluvar, the Vivekananda Memorial is one of the popular tourist attractions in south India.

Prime Minister Modi, who is known to take spiritual journeys at the end of election campaigns, visited Kedarnath and Pratapgarh at the end of in 2019 and 2014 campaigns respectively. While Kedarnath is a known religious spot, Pratapgarh is where a battle was fought between the Bijapur troops and Maratha forces under Chathrapathi Shivaji. Modi’s choice to opt for Kanyakumari's Vivekananda Rock is regarded as a silent campaign showcasing his Hindu nationalism.

Located in the southernmost tip of India, Kanyakumari is a picturesque tourist destination where the three oceans, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, converge. The Vivekananda Memorial has its own historical significance. Located 500 meters off the Kanyakumari coast, it is a popular tourist hotbed - a memorial set up during the Congress regime in 1970, under the instigation of the Ramakrishna Mission. It is believed that Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days sitting on the rock, after extensive travel across the globe. It is believed that Vivekananda attained enlightenment here while meditating. It is also said that it was on this rock that Goddess Parvati, also known as Kanyakumari, prayed to lord Shiva.

Incidentally, the Memorial looks similar to the Ramakrishna Temple, situated in Belur Mutt in West Bengal. Again Modi’s visit is believed to send positive signals to the voters in West Bengal, a part of which goes to poll in the last phase of the elections.

It comprises Dhyan Mandapam or a meditation hall and the construction has an antique-style pattern. An architectural marvel with an aesthetic view, the memorial houses a life-sized bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda and two more structures called the Sripada Mandapam and Vivekananda Mandapam. The historical significance, Indian philosophy and the Hindu nationalistic belief attached to the Vivekananda Centre are said to be the major reasons for Modi and the BJP choosing the southern tip of India for his meditation mission this election season.

Security is beefed up at the boat jetty in Kanyakumari, while the spot has been closed to tourists. The Prime Minister will arrive at the Thiruvananthapuram airport and proceed by helicopter to Kanyakumari. He will land at the helipad in Kanyakumari on May 30, evening and then proceed to the Dhyan mandapam at the Vivekananda memorial situated mid-sea.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai on May 30 to offer prayers at the Kottai Bhairavar temple. The temple located at Thirumayam in Pudukottai district is considered a powerful shrine and a favourite of the local politicians. Located on the outer wall of the Thirumayam Fort, Kottai Bhairavar is regarded as an aspect of Lord Shiva, a guardian deity, in this part of Tamil Nadu.

Congress complaints to EC over PM Modi's Kanyakumari retreat: ‘Tactics to keep himself in the headlines’

Pm modi is scheduled to meditate at rock memorial, a monument built in tribute to swami vivekananda, in kanyakumari following the culmination of the lok sabha polls campaign on may 30, according to bjp leaders..

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Rudra meditation cave.

Congress has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India stating that Prime Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi's proposed Kanyakumari meditation visit is in violation ‘silence period’ provision of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) amid the Lok Sabha Elections.

Modi is scheduled to meditate at Rock Memorial , a monument built in tribute to Swami Vivekananda, in Kanyakumari following the culmination of the Lok Sabha polls campaign on May 30, according to BJP leaders.

‘Silence period’ is used by the ECI to describe a 48-hour period during which political parties and candidates are not allowed to campaign.

Congress in their complaint flagged that the meditation retreat of PM Modi was a violation of the ‘silence period’ in Varanasi that will commence. "The retreat is a “tactic" by the Prime Minister to either keep campaigning or to "keep himself in the headlines," Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

“We have complained that PM Modi has announced that he will sit for 'Maun Vrat' from the evening of May 30... The silence period would be from 7 o'clock on May 30 till June 1. This is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct." Singhvi added.

Varanasi will vote on the seventh and last phase of Lok Sabha Elections on June 1. Notably, in 2019, too, Prime Minister Modi had visited the Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines ahead of the declaration of results of that year's Lok Sabha elections, when he got elected to serve a second consecutive term.

What did Congress complain?

“On 28.05.2024, several new agencies reported on a trip that Shri Narendra Modi would be taking to Kanyakumari, where he would undertake 48 hours of meditation at the 29th May 2024 Dhyan Mandapam , starting on 30.05.2024. The said trip would be widely televised and would therefore during the 48 hour silence period in Varanasi, the Constituency from which Shri Narendra Modi is contesting." the Congress complaint read.

"Through the meditation trip, Shri Narendra Modi is attempting to circumvent 48 hour silence period and unfairly leverage the ethno-cultural significance of the chosen location in an attempt to bolster his campaign and maximize his voteshare…" the complaint added.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Trinamool Congress will complain to the Election Commission if PM Modi's meditation in Kanyakumari is televised, claiming that it would be a violation of the election MCC.

Opinion In India’s polarized election, voters seek a return to normal

Modi might win India’s election, but not necessarily because of his religious rhetoric.

Barkha Dutt, a broadcast journalist and anchor in Delhi, is the author, most recently, of “ To Hell and Back: Humans of COVID .”

In an election in India that many at home and abroad had written off as entirely one-sided, a surprisingly spirited campaign is underway.

In January, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the opening of the Ram Mandir, a grand Hindu temple on the site where a mosque once stood, most political observers concluded that this religious moment would define the election.

Modi’s personal ratings were already higher than any of his opponents. Given his cult of personality, targeted welfare schemes, effective messaging on India’s enhanced place in the world and an entirely obsequious broadcast media, he seemed to have won the election before it started. His party, the BJP, is also India’s richest. The temple gave his campaign an added emotional, populist message.

“It’s Hindu Resurgence” writer Neerja Chowdhury said to me at the time, “and Modi is a phenomenon that liberals have not fully understood.” At the time I agreed with her.

But now the country’s voters — across regions, religions, castes and class — are saying they care less about religious matters than they do about everyday issues of governance.

For nearly two months I have been traveling thousands of miles by road, from the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland in Kanyakumari to Kashmir in the north, interviewing hundreds of voters from diverse regions, religions and communities. Modi remains the dominant political force, but I have found healthy pockets of strong pushback against aggressive religious rhetoric that has often characterized his party’s politics.

“Yeh dharam ki rajneeti bekar hai” — “Politics based on religion is worthless,” said a farmer impatiently as we sat under the shade of a giant banyan tree surrounded by wheat, maize and pearl millet fields. “What we want is 24/7 electricity, enough water for irrigation and opportunities for our children.”

This was a small village in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous and hence most electorally significant state.

Next to us children scampered under a scorching sun. One wanted to be a doctor, the other a soldier in the army.

“Don’t talk to us about Hindus and Muslims, they are both good people,” he said. “Talk to us about how our lives can be better.”

As India’s election — the world’s largest — enters its final phase, the Ram Mandir is turning out not to be a salient electoral issue. Everywhere I traveled, the temple was raised by me — it never came up in conversation otherwise. Even in Ayodhya, the pilgrim town where the temple was built, people link it to the elections mostly in the context of increased economic opportunities. Ardent admirers of Modi say it isn’t why they’re voting for him.

In city after city, I asked BJP voters to list what they liked best about the prime minister. They mentioned infrastructure expansion, India’s growing importance in the world, Modi’s 24/7 workaholic image, his forceful persona — and the absence of a compelling alternative. And when I asked what they would like to see him change, invariably I heard two answers — a greater focus on jobs and a toning down of the religious rhetoric.

After a dip in voter turnout in the first two phases of the election (voting has been taking place since mid-April), Modi’s speeches became more aggressively Hindu nationalist. In one, he suggested that the opposing Congress party would take people’s wealth and redistribute it among Muslims. He used words such as “infiltrators” and “those who have more children.”

He seemed to be falling back on formulaic Hindu-Muslim divisiveness in an effort to mobilize Hindu voters.

But in my conversations, Modi’s fans said they’re not comfortable with this kind of religious stridency. In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, one BJP voter told me he wished the prime minister would “dial down saffron politics.”

A couple of weeks later, Modi distanced himself from his own remarks and denied that he had been speaking about Muslims at all. He went further . “I am not fit to be in public life, if I do Hindu-Muslim.”

Unlike the previous two elections that catapulted Modi to victory — 2014 was a vote against a Congress government mired in corruption, and 2019 was a national security election held in the aftermath of a terrorist attack and India’s retaliation inside Pakistan — no single national issue is steering the vote this time.

By flagging issues of local importance — agrarian distress, water scarcity, unemployment — voters have opened up space to demand accountability from the Modi government.

Can he lose?

“Modi will definitely be prime minister again,” argues Prashant Kishor, one of India’s best known political strategists who has in the past worked closely with Modi. “But his currency has been devalued, he is a brand in decline.”

In any case, India’s voters appear to be swinging the pendulum away from the Hindu-Muslim divide and back to ordinary political concerns.
