Michael Jackson

In 1988, Michael Jackson gave himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for setting a new attendance record, when he played the first of seven nights at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The shows on his Bad World Tour were attended by a total of 504,000 fans, beating the record previously held by Genesis . Ticket demand for the dates exceeded 1.5 million, enough to fill the 72,000 capacity venue 20 times over.

Jackson could do no wrong. Sponsored by Pepsi and spanning 16 months, his Bad World Tour saw the singer play 123 concerts to 4.4 million fans across 15 countries. When the tour concluded it had grossed a total of $125 million, adding two new entries in the Guinness World Records for the largest grossing tour in history and the tour with the largest attended audience.

Jackson’s then-manager Frank DiLeo had announced the singer’s plan to embark on a solo world tour in June 1987, with the first dates in Japan, marking Jackson’s first performances in the country since 1973 as part of The Jackson 5.

When Jackson arrived at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport over 600 journalists, cameramen and fans greeted him. A chartered jumbo jet was used to carry 22 truckloads of equipment, along with Jackson’s entourage of 132 for the tour. The stage set used 700 lights, 100 speakers, 40 lasers, three mirrors and two 24-by-18 foot screens.

Every night on the tour the then unknown Sheryl Crow (who was working as a backup singer) would join Michael for a duet on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”.

But enough of the boring facts, lets talk about Bubbles. Yes, his pet chimpanzee Bubbles, Jackson’s constant companion. Jackson had adopted the young primate from a Texas research facility in the early 1980s. He lived with Jackson at his Neverland Ranch, where he slept in a crib in Jackson’s bedroom, would eat at the dining table, wore a diaper, ate candy in the Neverland movie theater and relieved himself in Jackson’s personal toilet. Jackson and Bubbles often wore matching outfits.

At the start of the Bad tour, Bubbles took a separate flight from the US and upon arriving at Narita International Airport was greeted by more than 300 people. During his stay in Japan, Jackson surprised people by taking the animal to tea with a Japanese mayor. And why not.

But there’s more: Bubbles had sat in for the recording of the Bad album (along with Jackson’s pet snake), and had his own bodyguard and agent. According to some reports, the singer had taught the chimpanzee how to moonwalk. Now that I would like to see!

Unfortunately, Bubbles matured into an aggressive adult chimp unsuitable as a companion animal and was sent to a California animal sanctuary where he attempted suicide. (Why didn’t the guards remove his laces and belt?).

But I read that Michael kept in touch with his ex-best friend. On his birthday, (Bubbles’ that is), Michael arranged a party and invited some ‘celebrity animals’ including Cheetah, the chimp from Tarzan, and movie star dogs Benji and Lassie.

Sadly Bubbles, now in his late twenties, resides at the Centre for Great Apes in Florida, unaware that his former owner has gone for a long moonwalk in the sky. He spends his time hanging out with a group of six other chimps. Among his favourite things to do are eating sweet potatoes, painting and teaching all the other inmates the moonwalk. Apparently, Bubbles is often heard regaling them with tales of his adventures on that Bad tour from 1986, and publishers have reputedly offered the chimp a lifetime supply of bananas to publish a “tell-all memoir” about his times with Michael Jackson. Or did I make that last bit up?

With Michael Jackson, it’s often hard to separate the myth from reality…

Bad World Tour

  • View history

This article is about the tour. You may have been looking for the album .

The Bad World Tour is the first worldwide concert tour by Michael Jackson . It was launched in support of the artist's seventh studio album, Bad (1987) and lasted sixteen months, spanning from September 12, 1987 until January 27, 1989. The shows were sponsored by Pepsi .

The tour became the second highest grossing tour of the decade, as well as one of the most attended tours in history. As announced by Jackson himself during the last show of the tour, these were initially meant to be his last performances in history. However, the Bad World Tour was eventually followed by the Dangerous World Tour and HIStory World Tour .

Background [ ]

For the longest time, while already releasing hit solo albums, Michael still toured with the Jacksons . At a December 1984 show of the Victory Tour , Jackson announced his departure from the group, stating it was the final show he was gonna play with them.

On June 29, 1987, Michael's manager, Frank DiLeo announced the singer was going to embark on his first solo concert tour. The shows would be sponsored by Pepsi, a company which previously got Jackson in hospital after a tragic pyrotechnics accident a few years prior.

The tour was originally going to finish in Tokyo, but Jackson suffered from swollen vocal cords after the first of six concerts in Los Angeles in November 1988. The remaining five shows were then rescheduled for January 1989. However, due to this decision, Greg Phillinganes had to leave the band in early January, as his schedule was busy as he was set to tour with Eric Clapton. Instead, John Barnes would be hired to take Phillinganes' place. With the tour ending, Michael sought medical care for vocal-chord nodules.

  • On this tour, Jackson performed " Thriller " live for the first time.
  • During the concert in Brisbane on November 28, 1987, Stevie Wonder made a guest appearance during the song " Bad ."
  • The set list would be changed around for shows in the European second leg, performing " Human Nature " & " Smooth Criminal " after " Rock with You ".
  • " The Way You Make Me Feel " was sometimes taken out of the set list for time constraints or other unknown reasons, so " Man in the Mirror " was performed in the " Bad " jacket, instead of classic "The Way You Make Me Feel" blue shirt. During other shows, both "Man in the Mirror" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" were removed, leaving Jackson ending the show with "Bad", as he'd done in the first leg.
  • During the last 1989 Los Angeles show Michael wore a white shirt for "The Way You Make Me Feel" instead of a blue one.
  • Jackson would only wear the black shirt for the first show and only time wear he would wear it. He would not wear it again due to the costume & lighting obscuring his dancing.

Their setlist was almost identical to the one in their comeback gig at Power Trip Festival in October, albeit with the order of some of the songs changed. The band kicked off their career-spanning set with ‘If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)’ and ‘Back In Black’, while they wrapped up with traditional set closer ‘For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)’.

The Official charts should speak more about other artists!! ED, Taylor, Miley etc...!! these singers are already overrated and have world success...they don't need more ads or news about them!! why can't the OC speak about underrated artists more often!! a chance for us to get to discover them. So many of them deserve success but are not known to the public!! thanks the OC!

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

bad world tour wembley

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

Club Wembley confessions: Champagne football, prawn platters and David Baddiel

Club Wembley confessions: Champagne football, prawn platters and David Baddiel

I was best man at my friend Mark’s wedding last year, which gave me the opportunity to tell a story about when he attempted to bring a newly bought 150ml bottle of aftershave onto a plane in 2018, only to be stopped by security at Manchester Airport.

His response was to try to apply 50ml onto his person as quickly as possible — not an insignificant amount, as he found out.

I looked into the sunken eyes of a few Chelsea supporters on Sunday, but none of them appeared as sad, embarrassed and beaten as Mark did six years ago. Admittedly, he also smelt very good and as we embraced at the final whistle at Wembley, I am pretty sure I was able to identify a lingering whiff of Diesel Only the Brave.

Mark has always liked nice things, so when I told him I’d been offered two tickets at Club Wembley for the Carabao Cup final , he was very excited.

Me? I was unsure. I had never experienced corporate hospitality before. It’s not really my thing, as all of the people who have enjoyed telling me I’ve “sold out” can testify.

And Club Wembley isn’t just any posh seats. It’s possibly the most derided executive section of any stadium in the country, particularly in those moments just after half-time in big games when it remains half-empty as customers are too busy quaffing Champagne.

But after the near-disaster of Paris for the 2022 Champions League final, when supporters were treated like contestants in Squid Game, the idea of a free pass that included drink, food and a safe passage to a comfortable seat could ultimately not be resisted.

There was also the bonus of actually being able to watch a final next to a person I’ve known since 1995, which as he likes to say, is as long as Everton ’s wait for a trophy.

That said, there was — for Mark, at least — good and bad news when our tickets came through by email last Wednesday.

The good? That would be our invitation to the Laurent-Perrier bar and the chance to consume as much of the sponsor’s product as we wanted.

The bad? For Mark, a certified gastronomic fusspot since he was a young child, that would be a menu made up almost entirely of fish.

Anyway, forget prawn sandwiches — this was the serious stuff. To start, there were smoked salmon and prawn tartlets, along with smoked salmon bagels with tartare and chives. Then came a seafood platter which included more “classic” smoked salmon, freshwater tiger prawns and crayfish, as well as a mango salad with lemon garnish.

bad world tour wembley

It was all delicious, although any personal pleasure was enhanced by the sight of Mark, just in front of me, focusing absolutely on his bread and furiously buttering it, before, somewhat sadly, asking for seconds.

I must stress, Club Wembley cannot be blamed for Mark being picky. Guests at other tables were enjoying menus that included meat and the staff throughout the day could not have been more accommodating. Yet, I suspect Mark felt it wasn’t his place to inquire about alternatives, while I was finding it quite satisfying watching him struggle.

He was enjoying the Champagne, however. We both were. And slowly, we almost forgot that an important football match was due to start just outside.

There is only one rule in this part of the stadium and it involves a dress code that strictly says no club colours. For Liverpool fans, especially local ones, it was an easy instruction to follow given the culture of ignoring replica shirts and pretty much all official merchandise. I recognised plenty of faces on the concourse and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

bad world tour wembley

Things would get better for Mark when, inside the ground, comedian and Chelsea devotee David Baddiel came and sat next to him moments before kick-off.

“May the worst team lose,” Baddiel told Mark ruefully, admitting that Chelsea was most certainly the team that fitted that description. From there, Mark started to think he was Frank Skinner and the pair of them chatted away like old friends.

It was only at this point I realised how big Club Wembley is, with the area sweeping towards each end of the stadium, taking up the middle tier. Each of the seats has red cushions and is fixed with armrests. There is also plenty of legroom. I cannot think of a football ground where I have ever felt so at ease.

Maybe too at ease. A confession: after half-time, I became one of “those” people late to return to the action. My excuse: well, you also have to consider the soundproofing inside Club Wembley, which is so effective that you become blissfully unaware that there is the best part of 90,000 people a few feet away.

bad world tour wembley

Admittedly, half a bottle of Champagne was not going to drink itself. Liverpool could have scored twice in this period and had they done so, the lesson would have been a deserved one. In the end, we waited until the 118th minute for the first goal and what proved to be Liverpool’s winner.

If I thought the day couldn’t get any better, I was wrong. Waiting for us back at the Champagne bar was yet more Champagne, with a slate of three cheeses (a blue, a cheddar and a Brie), dried fruit (apricot), chutney and crackers.

Again, it was lovely. Although, when your team wins — and wins like this — everything in life tastes bloody marvellous.
