Best extreme vacation adventures in the USA

Fly an aerobatic plane | Las Vegas, NV

1.  Fly an aerobatic plane | Las Vegas, NV

Getting an eagle's-eye view of Vegas is thrilling in itself, but pulling Gs in an aerobatic plane takes a sightseeing flight to heart-racing new heights. For the full Top Gun experience, Sky Combat Ace lets you take over the controls. Your pilot demonstrates each maneuver, such as a barrel roll, loop, and hammerhead, before letting you test your own skills.

Ziplining | Catskills, New York

2.  Ziplining | Catskills, New York

Whizz 60 feet above a verdant Catskills valley just under the highway speed limit along a 3,200-foot cable. The Skyrider tour is the most daring of three options at Hunter Mountain’s Zipline Adventure Tours . The 650-foot-long midmountain tour, which also traverses rope bridges and a rappel, is a tamer option for beginners (and you can also tackle it at night). Accommodations abound , but none beat the  Hunter Mountain Sanctuary , with views of the very same slopes you were flying over only a short time ago.

Heli-skiing | Anchorage, AK

3.  Heli-skiing | Anchorage, AK

Taking the off-piste concept to the limit, heli-skiing transports you to slopes only accessible by chopper. The deep, ungroomed powder makes it the preserve of experienced skiers. Set within one of the largest state parks in America, just north of Anchorage, the Chugach Mountains offer thousands of miles of terrain, powder bowls and steep vertical descents, all of which means you’ll never ski the same line twice.  Chugach Powder Guides  is one of the best operators in the area.

Whitewater rafting | Grand Canyon, AZ

4.  Whitewater rafting | Grand Canyon, AZ

Want to see America’s natural crown jewel, the Grand Canyon, from a different vantage point? Try from the Colorado River. As one of the most iconic whitewater rafting destinations in the world, travelers can choose from rafting trips with guides such as Wilderness River Adventures and Arizona Raft Adventures, which range from a few days to up to two weeks. Rapids can range from calm to intense, but no matter what, the scenery will be breathtaking.

BASE jumping | Twin Falls, ID

5.  BASE jumping | Twin Falls, ID

Part skydiving and part cliff jumping, BASE jumping is one of the most extreme thrills you can pursue, largely because the relatively low-altitude launch points mean less time to deploy your parachute. Perched nearly 500 feet above the Snake River, Perrine Bridge is known worldwide for its adrenaline-charged activity and, unlike many other destinations for the sport, doesn’t require a permit. The only prerequisite is courage, but TandemBASE guides newbies through the experience.

Canyoneering | Moab, UT

6.  Canyoneering | Moab, UT

Known for its world-class mountain biking , Moab offers great canyoneering routes that take you from carved sandstone slot canyons to ancient ruins and water-filled pools. Red River Adventures offers several guided canyoneering routes, including the relatively easy-to-moderate Ephedra’s Grotto and Chamisa Canyon. Both of these routes include hiking, scrambling, and a couple of rappels. The company also boasts day trips that combine canyoneering with rafting down the Colorado River.

Waterfall rappelling | White Mountains, NH

7.  Waterfall rappelling | White Mountains, NH

Few things are more exhilarating than lowering yourself down a rock face amid a deluge of foamy spray. While waterfall rappelling is often associated with exotic destinations like Costa Rica, you need only travel to the Northeast to experience it. Climbing outfitter Northeast Mountaineering welcomes adventurers of all skill levels. Take a short hike to the top of a 100 feet fall before rappelling down it with the help of a guide. Just be prepared to get wet.

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride | Lake Tahoe, CA

8.  Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride | Lake Tahoe, CA

No, we’re not talking about the Disneyland attraction. This single-track mountain bike route heads primarily downhill from the Tahoe Rim Trail—the total descent is more than 2,000ft. With multiple steep drops, sections traversing nothing but rocks, as well as epic views of the lake, it sure lives up to its name. If you’re not bringing your own wheels, Wanna Ride Tahoe can provide bikes, helmets and shuttles to Mr. Toad’s and other local trails.

Bungee jump off the Stratosphere | Las Vegas, AZ

9.  Bungee jump off the Stratosphere | Las Vegas, AZ

If it's an adrenaline rush you're after, look no further than this iconic Vegas attraction: bungee jumping off of the Stratosphere, the tallest observation tower in the US. In fact,  the Strat SkyJump  is the highest commercial decelerator descent facility out there—you'll leap from 829 feet up in the air with views of the Vegas Strip, descending at speeds over 40mph. Not for the faint of heart!

Climbing El Capitan | Yosemite, CA

10.  Climbing El Capitan | Yosemite, CA

Yosemite National Park is one of the best rock-climbing destinations in the world, but you don’t have to be Tommy Caldwell or Kevin Jorgeson, the duo that made history by free-climbing the daunting 3,000-foot Dawn Wall of El Capitan, to tackle its peaks. In addition to the popular 8,839-foot-tall Half Dome, easier summits include Washington Column, which has a 1,000-foot route. Need a guided trip, climbing lessons, or equipment rental?  Yosemite Mountaineering School has you covered.

Dive with sharks | Jupiter, FL

11.  Dive with sharks | Jupiter, FL

If you're not one to be particularly afraid of "Jaws," head to Florida for a once-in-lifetime experience diving with sharks. The state has the highest concentration of large sharks on the East Coast, and shark diving trips with operators like Florida Shark Diving  let experienced divers and novices alike get in the water with a variety of kinds of sharks, including tiger, great hammerhead, and reef sharks. Depending on your risk tolerance, choose to dive in a cage—or freedive.

Paragliding | Maui, HI

12.  Paragliding | Maui, HI

What better way to experience the world’s largest dormant volcano than by paragliding off its slopes? Daily flights with Proflyght Paragliding take off from the slopes of Haleakala, the highest peak on Maui at 10,000 feet. Beginners can test their mettle with the shorter 1,000-foot descent, but for the true adventurer, the 3,000-foot option features up to 15 minutes of airtime over the island’s lush tropical landscape and lavender farms.

Hiking a 14er | Colorado

13.  Hiking a 14er | Colorado

What’s a 14er , you ask? As the name suggests, it’s a mountain at least 14,000 feet tall, and there are more than 50 to choose from in Colorado—from the 14,007 feet Sunshine Peak in the San Juan Mountains to the 14,440 feet Mount Elbert, the highest summit in the Rocky Mountains. One of the most popular in the state is Pikes Peak, near Colorado Springs, which is a lofty 14,115 feet tall. A number of trails ascend to the top, including the most popular, the 13-mile Barr Trail.

Overnight caving | McMinnville, TN

14.  Overnight caving | McMinnville, TN

Want to get in touch with your inner caveperson? Not only can you explore Cumberland Caverns , which has more than 32 miles of underground passageways complete with cool rock formations, waterfalls and pools, but you can sleep over, too. Guided excursions include the All Around the Mountain tour, featuring ladder climbs, cave crawling and camping out in an underground cave, followed by breakfast in the cavernous Volcano Room.

Best adventure vacations in the u.s..

For some, escaping the daily grind means getting their adrenaline pumping on a rugged mountainside or 50 feet below the ocean's surface. Others search for snowy peaks and alpine lakes simply for a change of scenery. Using expert advice and traveler votes, U.S. News created a list of some of the best adventure vacations in the U.S. for a thrilling walk on the wild side. Be sure to cast your vote below to help determine next year's ranking.

Yellowstone National Park

Grand canyon national park, yosemite national park, jackson hole, kaua'i, hawaii - the big island, acadia national park, adirondacks.

action fun tours

For more than 11,000 years, Yellowstone has been home to Native Americans (26 different tribes have historic connections to the park), while the park's natural wonders draw visitors from all over the world. Hiking trails wind throughout the Wyoming, Montana and Idaho sections of the park, taking you to sights like the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs. If hiking isn't your style, you're in luck: Biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and kayaking are all available. Camp at one of Yellowstone's sites or in its undeveloped backcountry, if you're feeling especially adventurous.

action fun tours

Arizona's Grand Canyon boasts an array of adrenaline-pumping activities, most notably hiking and whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. To avoid the crowds, check out the hiking routes on the North Rim; chances are you won't see as many people along the challenging North Kaibab Trail. You're welcome to explore on your own, but for some of the best views, consider signing up for a guided excursion in a Jeep, atop a mule or in a helicopter.

action fun tours

Yosemite National Park features mountains, meadows, massive sequoia trees and plenty of waterfalls – all less than 170 miles east of San Francisco. Activities are similarly varied, ranging from bird-watching and stargazing to snowboarding and biking. Climbers will relish the opportunity to boulder and slackline throughout the California park. Meanwhile, novice and experienced hikers alike will find plenty of trails to trek, whether they want to explore mountains or valleys. Keep in mind, Yosemite's famous Half Dome hike is best suited for proficient hikers.

action fun tours

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, offers adventurous pursuits year-round. In winter and early spring, ski resorts boast plenty of powder for skiing, snowshoeing and tubing. For a more relaxing outing, opt for a sleigh ride. In the warmer months, kayaking, whitewater rafting or hiking in Grand Teton National Park is a must. And in fall, no visit would be complete without leaf peeping and listening to the bugle calls of wild elk in the National Elk Refuge.

action fun tours

The beauty of this lake straddling the California-Nevada border is impossible to ignore. The picturesque peaks offer some of the best skiing in the country (both cross-country and downhill), while the crystal-clear lake is ideal for kayaking, canoeing and boating. You'll also find plenty of other activities, including disc golf, parasailing, hiking and golf. For a different kind of thrill, try your luck at the casinos or in nearby Reno, Nevada.

action fun tours

Filled with acres of misty rainforests, plummeting waterfalls and oceanside cliffs, Kauai's opportunities for adventure are enough to excite even the most jaded visitor. Float on a tube down the Hawaiian island's waterways, soar over the trees on a zip line or hike through rainforests and along the rim of Waimea Canyon. Surfing is another can't-miss activity here. Poipu offers great waves for new surfers, while the North Shore's gnarly waves are made for expert athletes.

action fun tours

Like other Hawaiian Islands, Maui offers a myriad of activities to get your blood pumping, from sea kayaking to helicopter tours to volcano hiking. But this is just the beginning: Head to Maui's northeast coast to admire roaring waterfalls, belching blowholes and jagged peaks. And don't forget to spend time in the water. Visit Molokini for a colorful and exotic snorkeling experience, or suit up to go into the depths of the ocean during a scuba diving excursion.

action fun tours

The largest of Hawaii's islands boasts plenty of jungle to trek and not one, but five volcanoes (some of which are still active). Explore Mauna Loa and Kilauea, two of the active volcanoes, by hiking through Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Its 150 miles of trails wind through rainforests and volcanic craters, among other natural wonders. After your hike, cool off in the island's surrounding waters by snorkeling in Honaunau Bay, located about 20 miles south of Kona on the island's western shore.

action fun tours

There are ample opportunities for adventure in Maine's forested wilderness. If you're considering Acadia for your next family trip, note that the park's rocky trails can be challenging for little legs. However, there are several forest and coastal trails that are better suited for children, including the Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop, and the Wonderland Trail. Additionally, you and the kids will get a kick out of watching the park's harbor seals.

action fun tours

This mountainous region in upstate New York has plenty to offer thrill-seekers. Test the powder on Whiteface Mountain, navigate the area's waters in a canoe or test your climbing skills on one of numerous rock faces. While here, you'll also want to check out a few of the region's more unique offerings, such as the Lake Placid Olympic Sites. At Mount Van Hoevenberg, fill your need for speed on its Cliffside Coaster or by partaking in bobsled rides. Then, try the zip line at the Olympic Jumping Complex to mimic the feeling of ski jumping.

action fun tours

You'll need to pack a sturdy pair of shoes for your trip to Sedona, Arizona. The town's striking red rocks are best seen on foot from one of the destination's 200-plus hiking paths. Not sure where to start? Kick off your trip at The Hike House, where staff can help you pick a trail that suits your skill level. You can also explore the area by horseback or via an all-terrain vehicle or a mountain bike.

action fun tours

If you're an adventure junkie, you shouldn't miss out on America's "Last Frontier." Take a boat trip through Tracy Arm Fjord to see crumbling glaciers and swimming seals, or head to breathtaking – literally, it's an exhausting hike – Mendenhall Glacier. Save some of your strength for other pursuits in the Alaskan capital, too, including fishing trips, glacier climbing, whale watching, skiing and dog sledding. No matter what you decide to do, be sure to wear plenty of layers and sturdy shoes.

action fun tours

Telluride, Colorado, was a gold and silver mining town until 1972 when the first ski lift was installed. The town then began its transformation into a mecca of outdoor adventure. In winter, available activities are limited to snow sports like skiing, ice climbing and sledding. As spring begins, Telluride's options expand to include everything from paragliding to rock climbing to kayaking. Extend the adventure by camping instead of staying in a hotel.

action fun tours

Anchorage, Alaska, showcases Mother Nature's adventurous side in Chugach State Park, where craggy cliffs beckon to hikers, rock climbers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers. Families can get the kiddos in on the action by checking out the more novice Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Alternatively, they can treat younger travelers to a horseback riding trip or bike ride through one of Anchorage's other parks – there are 223 available within city limits.

action fun tours

Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Big Sur features the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the continental U.S. Home of famous U.S. Highway 1, this California treasure attracts roughly the same number of visitors as Yosemite. Strict regulations have limited how many commercial options are available for adventurers, but hikers and nature lovers will feel right at home here. Hit the trails at Los Padres National Forest or Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Don't forget to visit the beach in the latter, too, to snap pics of the stunning Keyhole Arch at sunset.

Top 15 Outdoor Adventure Activities in Las Vegas in 2024

Jessica Nemire Last Updated: October 26, 2023

Tourists have a range of interests and adventure levels. Some travelers would prefer to chill by the pool, while other adventurers want to get their adrenaline going. This guide is specifically for thrill-seeking travelers who want a bit of an adventure when they come to Sin City. Read on to plan the most memorable adventure activities in Las Vegas.

The Best Adventure Activities in and around Las Vegas

There are so many heart-pumping adventures to be had in Las Vegas and its surrounding areas. Vegas is close to many lakes and (obviously) deserts, creating lots of opportunities for water sports and off-roading adventures. Not only that, but there are actually lots of thrill-inducing activities you can do right here on the famous Vegas Strip or on Fremont Street!

Whether you’d rather rent a jet ski or bungee jump off of an iconic hotel, if you are seeking some adventure on your trip to Vegas, this list is for you. Keep reading to get inspiration for the top adventure activities in and around Las Vegas.

15. Hike Through the Valley of Fire

One of our favorite activities to do near Vegas is hiking through the Valley of Fire, which is located just 45 minutes out of the city. See ancient petroglyphs high up on the rocks, take epic photos of BeeHives rock formation, and admire the jaw-dropping views at Rainbow Vista. We also confidently bet that you have never seen anything like the contrasting colors at the White Domes.

It’s not called the “Valley of Fire” for nothing. While many assume the desert is a boring place with nothing to see, the Valley of Fire will prove them wrong. Find out why by heading here for the day or evening, whether on your own or with a tour. If you schedule a tour around sunset, you will see why this epic location gets its name. Don’t forget your hiking boots and water!

14. See Vegas from a Different Perspective on the High Roller Ferris Wheel

action fun tours

Located at the LINQ Hotel, the High Roller Ferris Wheel is for thrill-seekers who prefer their adventures on the slightly tamer side. There’s no shame in that! The awesome Ferris wheel is called the High Roller, and it takes riders 550 feet into the air where they gaze down at the city lights below. This 28-cabin ride goes fairly slowly, so you’ll be able to grab pics for the ‘Gram. The High Roller is a fun activity any time of day, but it’s especially impressive at sunset!

If you have young adventurers with you, they can join you for this ride as it is considered all ages. However, adults do have the option of purchasing a package that includes an open bar, so you can toast your friends to the Vegas views below you! Address:  3535 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas Cost:  $23.50 – $34.75 for adults; $8.50 – $17.50 for kids; $60.00 for open bar

13. Get Upside Down on a NYC-Themed Roller Coaster

top things to do on the strip las vegas

Attached to the New York New York Hotel & Casino, the Big Apple Coaster goes 64 miles per hour and features twists, turns, and a 203-foot drop! This iconic roller-coaster also treats its riders to a brief moment of dangling upside-down over the Las Vegas Strip! Children are welcome to ride Big Apple Coaster as long as they are at least 54 inches tall (4-and-a-half feet). Every year, 1.4 million riders dare to try this coaster, making it a thrill-seeking favorite. Just don’t eat a big meal right before riding!

The Big Apple Coaster is open Monday – Thursday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday – Sunday from 11 a.m. until midnight.

Address:   3790 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas Cost:  $19 – $23

12. Fly High Through Fremont Street on the Slotzilla Zipline

action fun tours

Downtown Las Vegas is home to the Fremont Street Experience, a mecca of fun activities where visitors explore downtown Vegas in unique ways. One of our favorite adventure activities here is the Slotzilla Zipline. Standing 77 feet above Fremont Street, the ride begins outside of the Fremont Street Experience before sliding under the largest video screen in the world.

You can glide Superman-style at 11 stories above the street for 5 blocks, which is the classic way to ride this zipline. Some thrill-seekers opt instead for the Zip-Zilla experience in which riders zipline for just 2 blocks and only 7 stories above the street instead. No matter which height you choose, Slotzilla is an epic way to see Fremont Street, which is why it’s a must-do adventure activity in Las Vegas. Address: 425 E Fremont St #160, Las Vegas, NV Cost: $39-$59

11. Race Your Friends In Supercars

Exotics Racing top things to do in las vegas

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to race in a supercar, now’s your chance! Get behind the wheel of a Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Mustang, or the supercar of your dreams with Exotics Racing. They have the largest collection of supercars in the world, so it’s a safe bet you can drive that dream car!

If you want to experience the thrill of speeding in a supercar without having to get behind the wheel yourself, you can also book a seat as a passenger with a professional doing all the driving. If you have kids with you, they can explore the go-kart track while you take a spin in a Lambo. This heart-pumping activity is pretty popular in Vegas, so this would be a good one to plan ahead of time!

Address:   7065 Speedway Blvd, Las Vegas, NV Cost : $299 for 5 laps

10. Ride Through the Desert on Horseback

Woman riding a house through the deserts of Vegas.

Live out your wild west fantasies by booking a horseback tour adventure through the desert! Start your day right by trotting through the peaceful desert with spectacular views of sunrise or sunset over the mountains! Never ridden horseback before? No worries! This tour is led by guides who are there to help you navigate even the more rugged terrain with a gentle horse who knows the way. Since riding in the desert can get hot pretty quickly in the summer months, the best way to try this Vegas adventure activity is to book a sunrise or sunset tour. In both cases, that essential meal of the day is included, which makes the adventure even more memorable. When you’re visiting this dusty western region, riding horseback is almost a rite of passage, so don’t skip this fun activity!

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a horseback riding tour in Vegas is worth it .

9. Snorkel With Stingrays

This activity is fun for kids and adults who are fascinated by the creatures of the ocean — even though you’re in the desert. You can snorkel with stingrays at SeaQuest, and if you’re lucky, you might even get a few stingray kisses! Also in the tank with you will be some other fish and sea creatures. SeaQuest will provide you with a wetsuit, but make sure you bring a swimsuit and towel! This excursion is family-friendly, and there is no age requirement. However, please note that every adventurous snorkeler must be able to swim 100 feet. Younger adventurers who cannot swim can still snorkel with the rays, but they must stay with a supervising adult and wear a life jacket. Other fun activities include feeding animals and marine life here. Address: 3528 S Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV Cost: $49.99/person for a shared encounter; $249.95/group for a private excursion (up to 6 participants)

8. Jump or Dangle Off of the STRAT

action fun tours

Sure, everyone who comes to Vegas has seen the iconic STRAT hotel. But have they ever jumped off it? Be the first of your friends to try this adventure activity in Las Vegas. Leap off the 829-tall building at SkyJump!

And if bungee jumping is not your thing, but you still want to experience the famous thrill rides? Strap yourself into the Big Shot and catapult yourself off the side of the STRAT, or opt for the Insanity ride and dangle off the side of the building.

Alternatively, you can propel yourself 27 feet over the edge with the X-Scream coaster that lurches to a stop in mid-air. Yikes! No matter which thrill you choose, the STRAT has rides that are sure to get your heart pumping.

All four thrill rides are open from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. from Monday – Thursday, and noon to midnight Friday – Sunday.

Address:  2000 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas Cost:  $139 for SkyJump; $39 for each of the other thrill rides

7. Do Some Skydiving — But Indoors

action fun tours

Are you into boosting your adrenaline but not super into jumping off of buildings or out of airplanes? This activity is for you! Vegas Indoor Skydiving allows you to experience the thrill of skydiving without involving any actual planes or serious heights. If you’re curious about skydiving but not 100% sure about it, this is a great first step! Plus, it’s super fun! First-time flyers can pick the Learn to Fly package, which gives you an hour to learn indoor skydiving basics. More advanced or intrepid flyers can go with the Indoor Skydiving Experience package for a longer flight time at a higher price. This is another one where your young thrill-seekers can come along too! Address: 200 Convention Center Dr, Las Vegas, NV Cost: $85 for Learn to Fly, $149 for Indoor Skydiving Experience

6. Jet Ski Around Lake Mead

action fun tours

Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is a reservoir about 24 miles from the famous Vegas Strip. It’s one of our top picks for adventure activities away from the Strip craziness! Experience Lake Mead by renting jet skis to race your friends. You can spend the whole day here as you zip through the lake creating waves. If another water craft is more your speed, Las Vegas Boat And Jet Ski Rentals also has power boats, wakeboard boats, and pontoon boats you can rent all day long in order to explore the lake. Whether you’re a more cautious adventurer or prefer your jaunts to be full speed ahead, renting boats on Lake Mead is sure to be a good time for you and your group! Address: 4375 S Valley View Blvd #G, Las Vegas, NV Cost: $300 USD for a full day rental

5. Explore the Nellis Sand Dunes in a Dune Buggy

adventure activities in las vegsa

The Nellis Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle area is more than 10,000 acres of dusty terrain that you can explore by off-roading in a truck, ATV, or dune buggy! SunBuggy Fun Rentals lets you explore the Nevada desert in the best way using any of their off-roading vehicles. If you have a need for speed, their website mentions that they offer “chase experiences,” in which they encourage adventurers to “drive like you’re trying to get away with something.” You can select the Vegas Mini Baja Chase, which includes a Strip view from the top of the dunes, or dare to try their night chase. It’s a nighttime race through the desert which is an adrenaline-pumping way to start the rest of your night in Vegas. There’s a large variety of heart-pumping ATV and dune buggy tours offered, so pick your favorite and hold on!

Address: 6925 Speedway Blvd c106, Las Vegas, NV Cost: prices vary — ATV tours start at $129

4. Explore a Cave in a Glass-Bottomed Kayak

action fun tours

The beautiful Colorado River is fun to explore by kayak, but did you know it also contains a green cove that is only accessible by boat? Emerald Cove, located along Black Canyon, is situated right where the Colorado River runs along the Arizona and Nevada border.

There are steep canyon walls on both sides, making it hard to access. Because of the way the sunlight hits the algae in Emerald Cove, this magnificent natural phenomenon turns the water a vibrant emerald green, which we can only assume is how they picked the name, of course. We recommend a kayaking tour with a clear-bottomed kayak to see the water beneath you!  Address: Willow Beach, AZ

3. Shoot Guns and Ride Monster Trucks on Adrenaline Mountain

adventure activities in las vegas

True to the name, Adrenaline Mountain is basically an adrenaline junkie’s haven. Here you can shoot machine guns, go off-roading, get behind the wheel of a monster truck, throw axes, crush rocks, plus other fun adventure activities near Vegas. Adrenaline Mountain also gives you an opportunity to zoom past 100-year old mines and grab epic pictures to remember your awesome day.

Whether you’d rather be off-roading or shooting a target, there is something for every thrill-seeker at this unique destination. It’s also a great spot for birthdays and other celebrations with a group — even weddings if that’s your jam.

Address: 15357 Kingston Rd, Sloan, NV Cost: $145 for shooting, $225 for off-roading

2. Go ATV Off-Roading in Eldorado Canyon

This is easily one of the most epic guided adventures on this list. For starters, you get to take an off-road ATV tour around Eldorado Canyon. As if that wasn’t cool enough, you also get to drive through cool cactus gardens and transport yourself to the 1800s as you explore the Techatticup Gold Mine. Your guide will share stories about what the miners went through and see the antique tools they used. Throughout your off-roading adventure, you might even be able to spot some wild animals! After a full day of off-roading and exploring an old mine, fill up on lunch before heading back to the city. Please note that ATV drivers must be at least 16 years old, and those under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

1. See the Grand Canyon from a Helicopter’s View

action fun tours

Everyone knows that taking a tour of the Grand Canyon is one of best things to do while visiting Vegas. After all, it’s one of the seven natural wonders of the world and truly is breathtaking to see. But have you considered seeing it by helicopter? It’s the fastest way to see the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, and it’s certainly the most epic.

You can take a helicopter tour of either the West Rim or the South Rim. No matter which one you choose, there is nothing like being 3,500 feet high up in the air witnessing one of the world’s greatest natural wonders below you. Enjoy the breath-taking views as you soar above the canyon and stop for pictures along the canyon’s edge. Those memories will last a lifetime!

Money well spent

We were only in Miami for a very short time and some of my travel companions were 70 years old, making it hard to walk or bike long distances to see the whole city. This driving tour was perfect. It allowed us to see lots of neighborhoods and get a good feel of the full scope of Miami. We went to South Beach, Little Havana, Brickell, and a few other neighborhoods. The app was really impressive and easy to use. The guide gave directions on which way to turn (though some turns are quick!! Keep an eye on the app’s path to predict the route yourself instead of just waiting for the narrator). As we drove into certain locations, it triggered an audio segment to play and give us some history of the area. The guide was easy to listen to and understand. He spoke clearly and the volume was perfect. I personally wanted a little more content at each stop because I am a nerd, but my travel companions didn't mind the minute or two pauses in between stops. It give us time to talk to one another without missing content. I absolutely plan to purchase one of these in every city I’m in. Highly recommend!

Developer Response ,

We're thrilled that our driving tour suited your visit to Miami, especially accommodating the needs of your group! It’s great to hear that the app's features allowed you to comfortably explore diverse neighborhoods. We appreciate your suggestion for more content at each stop and will consider this as we update our tours. Looking forward to guiding you in other cities!

A great way to see Cape Anne.

We’ve been visitors to Gloucester 3 times before, but this is by far the best way to get acquainted with the area. We had a lot of fun on this drive! This was so cool… to have GPS track our progress and the narrator talks about what we see at the appropriate times! The tour is scenic and the audio is full of information that’s easy to listen to so we learned a lot as well. Since it was our first time seeing Rockport, there was a lot of background history that was a good introduction while seeing the sights. We would suggest giving clearer instructions about how the tour app actually proceeds. It needs to be stated better that the map will keep you apprised of your driving location as you move along, and that the app keeps track of it. The driver needs to know that the announcer will talk automatically when you reach the next point of interest. Maybe contacting the towns for better signage would help too. This was a great find for us and we’re really tickled that we found the app. I would definitely recommend the app and I’ll use it on future trips where it’s available.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of the Gloucester tour on our app. We're thrilled to hear that you had a great time and found the tour both scenic and informative. We appreciate your feedback about the instructions and will work to make them clearer in the future. We're glad that you were able to discover new information about Rockport and that the app was a great addition to your trip. We'll also look into your suggestion about contacting the towns for better signage. Thank you for recommending our app and we look forward to providing you with more enjoyable tours in the future.

Better than a paid personal tour

My wife and I were planning a trip to Moab Utah and we wanted to do a tour of Arches national park. We were looking at tour companies trying to find something that would work with our schedule and interests. We found a few tours that would work for us but then we found this app. We decided to save some money and get the app, buy the arches tour and do it on our own time. This was the best decision we made on this vacation. This app is awesome. We felt like we were on a tour with a personal tour guide but we didn’t have to interact with them (or tip them) and we got to do everything at our own pace on our own time (great for introverts and independents) . The tour itself and the information was great. We found ourselves discussing the information we learned during the driving tour while we were hiking the features which was pretty neat. We felt we had a special experience that no one else around us had at an amazing price. I could not recommend this app enough for those that enjoy tours and learning but don’t want to be part of an actual tour group.
Thanks so much for your kind words! This is exactly why we created this app, so it’s great to hear about your experience at Arches. We offer tons of other tours from coast to coast, so don’t forget to check out our selection at ActionTourGuide.com when planning your next vacation!

Madonna fan sues because tour is like ‘porn without a warning’

Madonna performs during a concert at the Copacabana beach

Yet another Madonna concert-goer has filed a lawsuit against the Queen of Pop that cited hot conditions, tardy arrivals and raunchy performances .

The plaintiff, Justen Lipeles, filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of those who attended the 65-year-old singer’s concert on March 7 in Inglewood, California at Kia Forum as part of her Celebration Tour.

The lawsuit stated that Madonna, Live Nation and affiliated organisations ‘purposefully and deceptively’ withheld crucial concert information including the start time, according to documents obtained by The Blast .

Despite arriving at 8:30pm, the concert supposedly kicked off at 10pm.

The lawsuit continued that the Material Girl hitmaker demanded that the air-conditioning be turned off and told the crowd to take their clothes off if they were too hot.

She then ‘forced [them] to watch topless women on stage simulating sex acts.’

‘Forcing consumers to wait hours in hot, uncomfortable arenas and subjecting them to pornography without warning is demonstrative of Madonna’s flippant disrespect for her fans,’ the lawsuit stated.

It added that it appeared as though a pornographic film was being made. Other complaints included making concert-goers listen to pre-recorded music for two hours.

Justen requested that the case be taken to a jury trial and receive compensatory damages.

Madonna performs in the final show of her The Celebration Tour

In full, the lawsuit listed six issues: breach of written contract, negligent misrepresentation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false advertising, negligence/negligent infliction of emotional distress, and unfair competition.

This is not the first time Madonna has faced a lawsuit from disgruntled fans.

Earlier this year concert attendees, Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden, launched a legal action against the Like a Prayer singer after she was more than two hours late to her Brooklyn show.

At the time Madonna’s representatives defended the pop icon, citing technical issues for the delay. ‘We intend to defend this case vigorously,’ they said.

Last month Madonna’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in its entirety.

‘No reasonable concertgoer — and certainly no Madonna fan—would expect the headline act at a major arena concert to take the stage at the ticketed event time,’ the lawyers argued.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour has truly been a saga to remember. The tour was initially delayed after the singer fell ill and was admitted to hospital in an induced coma.

Madonna

In March, Madonna made headlines after being caught demanding a wheelchair user to stand up during one of her concerts causing huge backlash.

The fan in question later told TMZ it was a mistake. ‘Some people are in wheelchairs and can stand — she had no idea I was paralysed,’ Vanessa Gorman said.

Then, earlier this month, the Grammy-winning artist broke records with her grand finale, a free concert in Brazil which saw around 1,600,000 people gather on the beachfront.

‘Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world. This place is magic,’ Madonna said during her set.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Madonna’s representatives for comment.

Patrick Mahomes plays tour guide, Chiefs have fun with President Biden in return to White House

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 31: U.S. President Joe Biden puts on a helmet given to him by the NFL Super Bowl champions head coach Andy Reid (L) and CEO Clark Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs on the South Lawn of the White House on May 31, 2024 in Washington, DC. The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime to win the 2024 Super Bowl. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON — Known as a master at making magnificent passes, Patrick Mahomes found himself Friday doing what he often does with his teammates, even if he didn’t have a football in his hands. Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, passed as much information as he could to many of his teammates who were in the midst of their first time being inside the White House.

The Chiefs’ return to the White House to celebrate their second consecutive Super Bowl victory, a second visit in less than a year, allowed Mahomes to demonstrate his ability to recall all the artifacts that fascinated him the most, many of them he learned 11 months ago from President Joe Biden.

“I’m showing other guys pictures on the wall, I’m showing paintings and some old furniture,” Mahomes said. “I felt like I was trying to be a tour guide.

“What makes it special is the guys that didn’t get to do it (last year). You talk about it all year long. You talk about the White House trip, winning the Super Bowl and everything that comes with that. Getting to show some of these young guys and guys that have come from other teams, it’s a special moment for them and you get to see that smile on their face when we leave.”

Within minutes of Mahomes sharing his second experience at the White House with reporters, a group of his first-time visiting teammates — defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah , receiver Rashee Rice , linebacker Drue Tranquill , cornerback Nic Jones and former safety Mike Edwards — sneaked into the media briefing room, a few of them approaching the presidential lectern for a fun photo opportunity. One reporter asked Anudike-Uzomah a simple question: What was the best part of the tour?

Shaking his head and smiling, Anudike-Uzomah responded with only one word: “Everything.”

History walks these halls. pic.twitter.com/C43clflMeN — Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) May 31, 2024

At 4:30 p.m. ET Friday, the Chiefs’ final act of their memorable 2023 season began when 32 players who played a role in the team’s championship appeared on the stage in front of the Rose Garden. The group included players who are no longer on the roster: Edwards, cornerback L’Jarius Sneed , backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert , tight end Blake Bell , linebacker Darius Harris and punter Tommy Townsend .

In his short speech, Biden commended the Chiefs for their ability to persevere through a difficult regular season and their toughest playoff path with Mahomes, who became their leading man in 2018. Aaron Schatz, the chief analytics officer of FTN Network and inventor of DVOA, said the Chiefs faced the hardest postseason road to a championship ever, based on the regular-season DVOA of their four opponents. Biden proclaimed that the Chiefs’ sustained success should lead Mahomes, coach Andy Reid, tight end Travis Kelce and pass rusher Chris Jones to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the future.

“When the doubters questioned you whether you could pull it off, believe me, I know what that feels like,” Biden said, smiling. “But anyway, I don’t think anybody is doubting you now. You fought hard. You kept the faith.”

In another dramatic Super Bowl, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 25-22 comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, the franchise becoming just the ninth team to be back-to-back champions. Mahomes completed all eight of his passes on the final drive, his final connection an easy 3-yard, walk-off touchdown to receiver Mecole Hardman . One of the highlights of Biden’s speech was his giving Mahomes a new nickname: The Comeback King.

“It was cool coming from the president,” Mahomes said. “We all understand how tough it is (to win a championship). I’ve dealt with losing in the Super Bowl and losing in the playoffs. You don’t take these moments for granted. These are the moments you’ll remember for the rest of your life. I’m glad I get to do it with a lot of guys that I call my brothers.”

In his five-minute speech, Biden didn’t mention Taylor Swift, the pop superstar who began dating Kelce early last season. Biden also didn’t look at or mention kicker Harrison Butker , who stood on the top row during the ceremony. Earlier this month, Butker criticized Biden for how he handled several issues, including abortion and the COVID-19 pandemic, in a commencement address at Benedictine College. Butker questioned Biden’s devotion to Catholicism, too. Throughout Biden’s remarks, Butker didn’t smile and rarely applauded him.

The only political statement Biden included in his speech was on gun violence. He praised four members of the Chiefs — right guard Trey Smith , long snapper James Winchester , running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Reid — for their response in aiding fans after the shooting in Kansas City in February after the Super Bowl parade , when one person was killed and at least 22 others were wounded.

“This team is exceptional, though as a country we have to do more to stop the tragic shootings before they happen,” Biden said. “Last year, I talked about how after winning the Super Bowl, many of these players went up to coach Reid and asked what they could do better. Even at the peak of their success, they’re looking for ways to work harder, to dig deeper and to improve.

“That’s the powerful lesson about sports in the nation: We’re a great nation because we’re good people, we never give up, we look out for one another and we leave no one behind. That’s America. I’ve never been more optimistic about our future. We just have to remember who we are. We’re the United States of America, and there’s nothing we can’t do when we do it together.”

Travis Kelce: "I'm not gonna lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I'd get tased, so I'm gonna go back to my spot." The Chiefs are at the White House. 🎥 @AriMeirov pic.twitter.com/aZQa5yHeb8 — The Athletic (@TheAthletic) May 31, 2024

Of course, as they did last year, the Chiefs were still able to produce a few funny moments.

A year ago, Kelce, who is known for his comedic timing and exuberant personality, made the crowd laugh when he approached the lectern, saying just seven words — “So, I’ve been waiting for this moment …” — before he was gently pushed back by Mahomes to join his teammates on the stage while photographers snapped shots of Biden with a red No. 46 jersey with his last name stitched on the back.

This time, Biden welcomed Kelce to the microphone.

“My fellow Americans … it’s nice to see you all yet again,” Kelce started, leading everyone in the crowd to laugh, including Biden. “I’m not going to lie, President Biden. They told me if I came up here, I’d get tased, so I’m gonna go back to my spot, all right.”

Joining the players on the stage was Reid, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, special teams coordinator Dave Toub, general manager Brett Veach, team president Mark Donovan and club owner Clark Hunt, who missed last year’s ceremony when Norma Hunt, his mother, died the day before the event at age 85 .

“Over the past few years, the men behind me have elevated the status of Kansas City and united football fans across the country and throughout the world,” Hunt said of the Chiefs’ earning three Vince Lombardi Trophies in the past five years. “There’s a lot that can divide us today, but for so many of us, sports provide a unifying joy that we all need.”

The 10-minute ceremony ended with Hunt and Reid presenting Biden with the gift of a Chiefs helmet that featured three autographs in black marker from Veach, Reid and Donovan. Within seconds of holding the helmet, Biden was encouraged by Kelce to put the helmet on. Biden obliged, much to the surprise of the players, who responded with loud cheers and laughter. Even Butker smiled and laughed at Biden’s gesture.

At the urging of the #Chiefs players, President Biden to put the @Chiefs helmet on. I’m sure this will be used in various ways on social media lol #SuperBowl pic.twitter.com/QFWjwS6zPV — Steven Dial (@StevenDialFox4) May 31, 2024

With the helmet still on, Biden turned around and put his hands up near the face mask to show Mahomes that he was ready to catch an over-the-shoulder pass.

“We feel blessed to be here,” Reid said after the team’s tour of the White House. “It’s been tremendous. I don’t know how many presidents have tried on your team helmet. This might be a first. It’s history being made.”

Biden’s last act on stage was to spend a few more minutes chatting with Mahomes, shaking the quarterback’s hands several times. Biden left the Rose Garden smiling with his new helmet in his left hand. Mahomes stayed on the stage and took a few seconds to look around.

“Just to get to look out and see the Washington Monument, it’s a cool moment,” Mahomes said. “I appreciate it. Hopefully, we’ll get to come back again. I’ll appreciate it every single time.”

New android games: the best from may 2024.

Relive classics like Sonic Mania, or try something new with Paper Trails

The Play Store saw many critically acclaimed games arrive on Android devices in May 2024, from retro creations like Sonic Mania Plus to newer hits like Katana Zero. However, we saw a new and exciting puzzle game, Paper Trails, a must-play for anyone with one of the top Android tablets .

Many of the games released this month are Netflix exclusives, so you'll need a Netflix account to play. If you're unsure whether a subscription is worth it, check out our roundup of the best games in the Netflix Games library .

12 best tablet games you can play in 2024

1 paper trail, tactile and clever puzzle adventure, paper trail.

Paper Trail is one of the most unique puzzle games we've played. Each level is a sheet of paper that you can fold, revealing new paths, routes around obstacles, and solutions to puzzles. While these puzzles aren't the most challenging, the experience of folding virtual paper is carefully designed to feel as satisfying as possible. There are also plenty of hidden secrets to uncover that aren't required to progress through the game.

The story of Paper Trails follows Paige, a young woman running away from home to attend university. Throughout your adventure, you'll meet a diverse cast of characters who, while unintelligible, are universally charming. That being said, the story is somewhat melancholic; an atmosphere of quiet contemplation permeates the entire game. Overall, it's easily one of the best puzzle games on Android .

2 Katana ZERO

Beautiful and action-packed pixel platformer, katana zero.

Katana ZERO is a neo-noir action platformer that launched on PC and consoles in 2019. While it took a few years to arrive on our phones, we're happy to report that the mobile port is just as good as the original. If you're unfamiliar with Katana Zero, it's a short (about 5 hours) experience but is undoubtedly one of the best platformers on mobile.

Katana Zero's gameplay looks straightforward on the surface, but when you start playing, you'll quickly realize why people rave about it. The gameplay is fast-paced but brutal, so you'll have to replay each level several times as you figure out your next steps. It's just the right level of challenge, and the plot twists will keep you looking forward to the next chapter in the story.

3 Squad Busters

Short and satisfying multiplayer fun, squad busters.

$0.29 – $99.99 per item

If you're a fan of Supercell's games, you probably don't need much encouragement to try Squad Busters. Drawing in familiar characters from the publisher's range of games, you'll group up a few and travel around a map, defeating other players to gather as many gems as possible. It's simple to pick up and play, and while Supercell's tradition of slightly frustrating progression is very present here, there's no denying that Squad Busters is an enjoyable way to spend a few minutes at a time.

Squad Buster is not an RTS, although it draws elements from that genre. Instead, it's a weird mashup of multiple genres to create something that feels familiar and new. It's worth a go; just remember that this is a Supercell game, with all the caveats that come with that name.

4 Braid, Anniversary Edition

A stunning remaster of the puzzle platformer, braid, anniversary edition.

Braid was initially released in 2008 for Xbox 360 and made its way to desktop computers and PlayStation in 2009. Hailed as a landmark in indie game development, this remastered version brings the game into the modern era with overhauled visuals, extra content, and remixed sound. For those unfamiliar with Braid, it's a platformer game with stunning water-color graphics in which you manipulate time to solve various puzzles.

Braid's puzzles revolve around non-linear gameplay. You can rewind time as much as you want; you're not forced to restart a level if you die. The remastered version contains plenty of new content to discover, and for veterans of the original, there's a commentary track that lets you explore different parts of game development.

5 Sonic Mania Plus

The made-by-fans game returns with extra content, sonic mania plus.

Sonic Mania was the game developed by fans for fans. Revisiting the elements that made the 90s era of Sonic games great, Sonic Mania is an equal parts nostalgia trip and enjoyable gameplay for newcomers to the franchise. Sonic Mania Plus includes extra content and characters to play as.

Sonic Mania Plus is designed with nostalgia in mind, but it's a new experience first and foremost. From collecting hidden Chaos Emeralds to defeating various bosses, there's content here to keep you occupied for weeks.

U.S. Women's Open 2024

With ghosts, nerves and plenty of drama, final round of U.S. Women's Open is going to be more fun than you think

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/womens open leaders 2.jpg

From left, Wichanee Meechai, Minjee Lee and Andrea Lee are the top contenders in the U.S. Women's Open.

LANCASTER, Pa. — On Saturday night, Andrea Lee will hang out with her parents, Minjee Lee will read the Andre Agassi biography “Open,” a nd perhaps watch an episode or two of “The Rookie,” and Wichani Meechai will wear the Buddhist protection amulet her mother gave her and hope that all interactions with the ghost at her rental house will continue to be more or less peaceful.

These are the three women who share the lead at the 79th U.S. Women's Open, knotted at five under. And along with Yuka Saso and Hinako Shibuno, they're the only ones who have managed to beat par through 54 holes.

MORE: Lancaster Country Club playing harder than USGA expected

Of the group, it's hard not to cast Minjee Lee as the favorite. Not only has the Australian captured two major championships, including the 2022 U.S. Open, but she was the one who really seized the momentum on moving day, shooting a tournament-best four-under 66 at a slightly less cruel Lancaster Country Club and rocketing into the final group Sunday.

Minjee Lee plays her shot from the second tee during the third round of the U.S. Women's Open.

Sarah Stier

The 28-year-old appeared cool as can be throughout the third round and into her press conference, where she wore the slight Mona Lisa smile she favors as she recounted the sterling round that included four birdies to just one bogey. As for pressure, she acknowledged the way you might greet an old friend who only visits once every two years or so; a little wild, this friend, but fun in small doses. And as she's learned twice already, it might end up being the time of your life.

"I feel like you don't always get to feel these feelings," she said, "so just kind of try to embrace the best that you can, adrenaline, a lot of the good stuff. It brings a lot of the good stuff, too."

Andrea Lee, a former American prodigy, lit up the junior ranks and rose to No. 1 twice in the world ranking twice, and set a record at the time for individual wins at Stanford. It took her three years to capture her first LPGA title, though, and so far, that 2022 win in the Portland Classic is the only one on the resume. In majors, she is only 50-50 at making the cut in 22 tries prior to this week.

But Lee started her third round like gangbusters, pouring in birdies on 1 and 3 before handing back a couple strokes before the turn and settling in for a long streak of pars. She forced herself out of neutral on 15 with an 11-foot birdie putt, followed that with an approach to two feet on 16 for another birdie, and coasted in with two pars to shoot 67 and tie the lead and earn a spot in the final pairing with Minjee Lee. Like her peer, she projected a kind of serenity in the face of what could be a career-altering Sunday.

2155643201

Andrea Lee acknowledges the crowd after a putt during the third round of the U.S. Women's Open.

Patrick Smith

"I think I'm just steadily getting a little bit better every year and just finding my rhythm out here on tour," she said. "I feel like this is the most comfortable I've felt out here and the most fun that I've had since turning professional."

Among Andrea Lee’s supporters is Michelle Wie West, the former pro and Stanford student who has been texting her this week encouraging her to maintain a spirit of fun as she chases her dream.

Wichani Meechai, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, who has no LPGA wins, openly admitted that she doesn't like pressure, and never has. When asked what it felt like, she was ready with one of the most interesting answers of the week.

"It makes me cannot focus anything," she said in her purposeful English. "My brain just stop working. It just like go outside and then just flat. I don't know how to say it in English, but it's like blank. It's like when you have a lot of pressure you cannot think about anything. You cannot feel your body. You cannot feel your brain. You cannot feel your hands. So I just hate it. But you're not going to be able to get rid of it. I think the best part for the three rounds for me, it's like I kind of managed to get along with the pressure."

Meechai got along with pressure just fine on Saturday, shooting a 69 on a course where any score under par is a victory, and she did it despite being heavily fatigued as early as the 12th hole. She didn't expect to be in that position, and in fact her mindset on Friday after an opening 69 was about as far from the school of positive thinking as an athlete can get.

"To be honest, yesterday I thought about missing the cut because I used to be in this position," she said. "Like the first day I shot pretty good, and then the second day I just like 80s and missed the cut by one. I cried a lot. I never think that I'm going to be on the leaderboard or something like that."

Also dogging her this week is the specter of ... well, a literal specter. The gathered press laughed on Friday and Saturday when she brought up the ghost at the rental house she inherited from her countrywoman Pajaree Anannarukarn, who booked it in anticipation of qualifying for the tournament but passed it on to Wichani when she missed out. On Friday, Wichani alluded to the house being haunted and being terrified on the first night, but settling into a truce with the ghost as the week went on. Despite the laughter, though—Wichani laughed too—as a practicing Buddhist she is a serious believer in ghosts and the world they inhabit. Her manager even offered to stay with her to ease her fear, but she refused. In fact, she now believes the ghost might like her.

"I'm not going to say I'm not afraid of it, but I will get along pretty well with the ghost," she said. "I'm trying not to say anything if I hear something, so I'm just like, act normal. But it was fine last night."

To recap: As Sunday looms, one of the three main contenders is a two-time major winner who seems to have ice running through her veins, another is a child star whose success on the professional circuit seems inevitable, and the last is a 31-year-old who had so little confidence in her game that she expected to shoot 80 and miss the cut on Friday, hates pressure and doesn't think she handles it very well, seemed dead tired from the hard walk at Lancaster Country Club, and has been coping with the fear of a ghost.

So yes, it is not a typical leaderboard, and fans and media and sponsors will be ruing the absence of many familiar names, foremost among them Nelly Korda. But there are wonderful stories looming at the top, including one so strange that you think she cannot possibly win, and so irresistible that you think she must.

Dick Van Dyke interview

At 98, Dick Van Dyke Is Still Going Strong And Raring To Take A One-Man Show On The Road: “I Think It’d Be Fun”

Legend. Icon. Hero. Dick Van Dyke is unsure how to feel about these terms. “It’s a little hard for me to get my brain around that,” he says, speaking over Zoom from his home in Malibu. “I don’t see myself that way and I can’t comprehend myself as that.”

He certainly wouldn’t be short of material. Van Dyke has been working for more than 70 years now, across film, theater and TV. The biggest screen moments of his career were celebrated in the recent CBS special Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic , a very sweet variety show involving heartfelt tributes and a parade of performers giving their takes on Van Dyke’s most famous musical numbers. The eclectic line-up ranges from Jason Alexander marching through Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Rita Ora doing a spirited “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. Throughout, Van Dyke, perched in a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang replica alongside his wife Arlene Silver, looks on, grinning from ear to ear, frequently singing along with gusto. His love for his work is, evidently, undimmed.

Dick Van Dyke interview

He insists he’s never had any real drive and that his success has been pure kismet. But surely you don’t get the career he’s had without a strong sense of ambition? “Well, it was a matter of just enjoying myself,” he says. “I always loved what I was doing. If it had felt like work, I probably would have stopped it a long time ago,” he laughs, “but I just loved it.” When we discuss his work, he politely corrects the word. “I call it my play.”

It’s striking just how much of his career Van Dyke can easily recall. He says, “I can’t remember what I had for breakfast… but my long-term memory is only getting better.” He’s 18 months shy of 100 and is of course slower than he was. He sometimes struggles to recall names, and is occasionally prompted by his wife, who’s sitting alongside him, but the stories come easily. Ask about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and he’ll launch into an anecdote about having to film the ‘English countryside’ scenes in France because the English summer was so wet. He’ll recall visiting Speakers’ Corner in London while filming Mary Poppins , to “hear all those soapbox orators”, and enquire whether they’re still there. It’s only on some of his more recent projects that his memory fails him. Asked what it was like to revisit the world of Mary Poppins for Mary Poppins Returns , in which he made a cameo riffing on his old man role from the original (the joke being that the senior citizen make-up was no longer required), he says, “I have to be honest, I can’t remember. I really can’t.” He sounds genuinely sorry not to be able to share a story.

Dick Van Dyke interview

Although he’s spent more than 50 years telling stories of his most popular movies, he never grows weary of it. “Nobody ever tires of talking about themselves,” he jokes. The only part he starts to find harder is that he’s one of the few left who can talk about his most beloved projects. Aside from Mary Poppins co-star Julie Andrews, almost all of his early collaborators have passed on.

“There is a kind of sadness in [watching 98 Years of Magic ],” he says, “because all of the wonderful people that I loved and worked with over the years have gone. I realized I’ve outlived an entire generation… I miss Rose [Marie] and Morey [Amsterdam] and all the wonderful people I worked with over the years. They should have been there.” The loss of Carl Reiner, The Dick Van Dyke Show ’s creator and Van Dyke’s dear friend, is the hardest for him to sit with. “I think I learned more from Carl Reiner than anyone else,” he says. “He understood comedy. He understood drama. He had a sense of timing like nobody else. And he was just so sharp and bright and a philosopher on top of it. He was the finest human being I ever knew.”

Van Dyke has always said he’ll never retire. And he means it. “I’ve just done my first soap opera!” he says excitedly of his guest spot in Days of Our Lives , for which he’s up for a Daytime Emmy. “Never done that before! I played an old guy, of course, in a wheelchair. My wife played my attendant.” And there are still those aforementioned ambitions to take a one-man show on the road.

Dic Van Dyke interview

He does allow the slightest hint of regret that his dramatic work is not as recognised as his comedy. He mentions talking to a producer after 98 Years of Magic and saying, “‘You know, I did some dramatic movies. Why didn’t you show those?’ And he said, ‘Nobody wants to see you be serious!’” He laughs, but there’s a truth in it. He took dramatic roles, and in some cases, like the show Diagnosis Murder , which ran for seven years, they were big successes. Yet it will always be the comedies and musicals that will leap to people’s minds immediately on hearing his name. He’s just fine with that.

action fun tours

“You know, yesterday I was looking at Facebook,” he says, “and there was a video of a toddler in diapers trying to imitate me doing my dancing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang . And he had the moves! I just almost cried. Sixty years later, a little baby trying to dance like me.” Moments like this are not rare for him. “I’m on my third generation now of kids who are writing to me. And I’m getting wonderful mail from their parents thanking me for providing good entertainment for their kids. They’re so kind about it. That I really appreciate. I’m so lucky.”

You can guarantee this won’t be the last generation to delight in his work. Even when Van Dyke is no longer around to receive the letters, and probably after most of us have gone too, there will still surely always be a toddler somewhere, impeded by their own diaper, trying to pull off their own version of a Dick Van Dyke dance.

2024 RBC Canadian Open leaderboard: Live updates, full coverage, golf scores in Round 3 on Saturday

Live scores, updates and highlights from saturday's third-round action at hamilton golf & country club.

Robert MacIntyre and Ryan Fox head into the weekend at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open in pole position with eyes on their first career victories on the PGA Tour. The DP World Tour staples-turned-PGA Tour members have found their footings in recent weeks and seek a payoff in the biggest of ways at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

With his father on his golf bag and still without a dropped shot across his first 36 holes, MacIntyre will need to keep his wits about him if he is to find the winner's circle. A winner at the BMW PGA Championship last fall, Fox caught fire late on Friday to catch MacIntyre, while Joel Dahmen and Canada's very own Mackenzie Hughes sit just off their pace.

Past the first page of the leaderboard are a number of stars hoping to make the most of their Moving Days around the par 70. Sam Burns remains within touching distance after a stop-and-go second round, with Rory McIlroy a little further behind in search of his third Canadian Open triumph.

Keep it locked here as CBS Sports will be keeping track of everything with live updates and analysis throughout the day. You can watch all the action live on CBS,  CBSSports.com  and the  CBS Sports App  from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Ryan Fox fading

Fox has made three bogeys on his second nine and is now tied for third with Ben Griffin. Robert MacIntyre just took the lead with a birdie at No. 16. He gets it to 12 under for the tournament and should be the outright leader going into Sunday.

Tommy Fleetwood's round of the day

Fleetwood somehow (?) still doesn't have a victory on the PGA Tour this year, but he does have the best round at the Canadian Open so far today. Or he's tied with Victor Perez with a 64. The move gets him into T4, which is three back of Fox, who leads at 12 under but just one back of Robert MacIntyre and Ben Griffin at 10 under.
