Yola Announces New EP ‘My Way’ & Intimate US Spring Tour

Today, Yola announced details of a forthcoming EP project titled,  My Way,  landing May 24. Executive produced by Yola and Sean Douglas, a Grammy Award-winning producer noted for his work with artists including Lizzo, Chris Brown, Madonna, Selena Gomez and Sia. Yola also confirmed “Future Enemies” will be the first single from the EP, released on February 9.

Yola will be taking this new music on the road, with a fan-first touring experience, designed to give fans a first listen to the forthcoming EP. The My Way: An Intimate Tour will see Yola performing shows in limited capacity sized rooms across select cities including Racket in New York, The Atlantis in D.C., El Rey in Los Angeles, Terminal West in Atlanta, and Basement East in Nashville, with tickets on sale on Friday, January 19, further information below and  here .

Says Yola:  “ Welcome to my new era: a utopia of black creativity, freedom and power. I cannot wait for fans to hear my new music – written and conceived in rooms of diversity – inspired by music I’ve long loved from Janet Jackson to Anderson.Paak to Mary J. Blige. I’m taking these new songs on the road to play for fans to hear it first in intimate venues– true fans know I’ve always been genre-fluid, experimenting and reworking my catalogue through live performance to encompass my love of soul, R&B, electronica and beyond. If you’ve seen the shows you already know where this is heading. This new music is the culmination of that work. This project is also born of my desire to surround myself with creatives of color, to express myself on every level of making this music, and finally, to do this all my way.”

TOUR DATES:

3/6 – Nashville, TN – The Basement East

3/8 – Atlanta, GA – Terminal West

3/22 – Pelham, TN – The Caverns Session PBS Taping

3/25 – Los Angeles, CA – El Rey

4/15 – Washington, DC – The Atlantis

Yola Details Headlining Walk Through Fire World Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

British singer-songwriter Yola has announced dates for her headlining Walk Through Fire Tour, which picks up in mid-November and runs through the early part of 2020. In conjunction with the news, Yola also released a new live performance of “It Ain’t Easy,” which appears on her 2019 album Walk Through Fire .

Yola, the ascendant Americana star , is currently playing a handful of U.S festival dates before she picks up a few shows on Kacey Musgraves’ Oh What a World Tour, including an October 25th stop at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. She’ll head back to Europe in early November, opening for rock band Greta Van Fleet’s world tour , but will still play a few headlining shows between them. By the close of December, Yola will be back in North America, where she’s set to ring in 2020 with Old Crow Medicine Show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium before resuming her headlining shows. Joining her for most of the U.S. trek will be singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah.

Earlier in 2019, Yola released Walk Through Fire , which was produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and put out by his Easy Eye Sound label. It’s earned her fans on both sides of the Atlantic, and even quite a few in very high places.

“The response has made me highly emotional,” she recently told Rolling Stone . “Getting tweeted by Kendall Jenner and Jamie Lee Curtis was not on the list of things I expected for this record.”

Even more recently, Yola popped up on the powerful theme song from the Highwomen, the supergroup of Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby.

Recent tour reviews

Wednesday 4th December, Islington Assembly Hall, London. Yola. So, it’s my last gig of the year and it’s a round forty for 2019. A good effort significantly down on previous years. There have been some great shows this year and the consistency of the quality of gigs has improved over recent years as everyone is upping their games for the valued gig dollar.

Once again, we are here at my favourite mid-sized venue blessed with the best toilets, great sound, good sight lines and it’s never over sold. The downsides are it seems to emphasise the noise of those ignorant people who insist on talking at the bar during a set. But with the prices they charge for alcohol its cheaper to talk than drink there.

Its fair to say that 2019 has been a breakthrough year for Yola ending it with four Grammy nominations. Seemingly spending most of this year over in the US of A she is back over here for some homecoming end of year shows.

Signs are not good when there is water and Lucozade on a table and then the manager brings a cup of tea on stage. So, it proves as Yola is currently suffering with Bronchitis. Her voice is soft and raspy at the start of the show especially at the low end and there is an obvious restraint certainly to begin with.

Yola has a really interesting back story full of anguish, depression and fire and if you want to know more listen to a great podcast from Chris Shifflett with her. She regales the story of her catching fire and its as probably at this point with ‘Walk through Fire’ the title track of her ‘debut’ album that the shackles start to be loosened on that powerful voice.

The set is largely the same set as when I saw her in May at the 100 Club with the majority if not all the album being played along with some selected covers including an excellent upbeat version of the Birds of Chicago track ‘Never Go Back’.

I have tried really hard to like the album, but I find it a little safe and over produced and certainly doesn’t reach the heights of Yola’s previous band Phantom Limb’s ‘The Pines’. What sets Yola apart though is that voice, it’s such a strong unique instrument and it needs to be in tip top shape to take the listener to the next level. There were moments of this tonight, but it was like a well-oiled engine tonight with one cylinder occasionally misfiring.

It may sound harsh but when Yola herself sets the bar so high being slightly off makes a huge difference. A pleasant enough show with some great moments but it will not live long in the memory.

Till the next time keep on country soul rockin y’all.

Wednesday 29th May, 100 Club, London, Yola Carter.

Ms Carter has reinvented herself recently dropping the Carter with a newly produced album by Dan Auerbach. It’s a highly polished affair and obviously designed to break the American market. It’s a little over produced for me and a lot of the songs just wash over you and I think that this works against Yola’s stunning vocal talent. It’s a unique voice evoking ‘in Memphis’ era Dusty along with a bite or two from other greats of soul and country. I can’t put my finger on it, whether this is the quality of songs or the shift to a more soulful approach but it doesn’t move me. I do think that the slight move away from the country tinge of her EP has taken a little of her character out of the music.

The same criticism is true for tonight. Backed by a tidy six piece backing band it all feels very safe. The set tonight airbrushes nearly everything that she has done before save one track from her EP or previous band Phantom Limb. Whilst the opening forty minutes was pleasing enough it wasn’t really until ‘It Aint Easier’ that she really lets loose and that amazing voice sends shudders through the room. This is quickly followed by a great cover of Birds of Chicago’s ‘Never Go Back’ and the album’s standout track ‘Faraway Look’. The momentum carries through to the encore of ‘Spanish Harlem’, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ and ‘The Letter’.

So, like the football last night it was a game of two halves with an uninspiring 45 minutes of nice enough music followed by an immaculate display from a unique talent to win the day.

Till the next time keep on rockin y’all

Monday 19th December. The Borderline. Yola Carter. In one of the last gigs at The Borderline before its refurb in the new year it’s the fabulous Yola Carter once of Phantom Limb now solo cutting a new path in the country soul scene. Hitting a lot of the ‘one to watch’ lists for 2017 we jump on board at the first stop.

It’s refreshing to see the artist hit the stage at the allotted time and despite her nursing a cold we are overwhelmed by the force of that voice from song one. Self-medicating on water and beer, if she’s not at 100% it’s not showing tonight.

She hops, skips and jumps through her only recorded release to date the EP ‘Orphan Offering’ joined on stage variously by her backing band and guest vocalists Danni Nichols and Emily Barker. Highlights for me are the excellent ‘Fly Away’ and the new song about her mother’s death ‘Free to Roam’.

After the usual charade of leaving the stage before the encore, Carter reappears with the excellent Emily Barker for a great version of the Band’s ‘The Weight’.  I am not familiar with Barker but her higher range perfectly complements Carter and I would have welcomed a lot more of them together.

It’s a small but enthusiastic crowd and I’m sure that once the word gets out the crowd and the venues will get bigger. Carter is such a talent and her voice in the lower range grabs you from your toes and envelopes your whole body as she goes through her vocal gears. If this is what it is like with a cold then stand well back when she unleashes the full force of that voice when fully fit.

It’s been a hellava ride this year with this being my 52nd gig (many thanks to the most understanding wife in the world) and considering what has happened in the world in the past twelve months it’s a fine way to send off 2016. This year has only cemented my passion for live music and 2017 is already shaping up nicely.

One final word for The Borderline and its makeover. Don't change too much, lose the velvet curtain so we can see the iconic sign on the wall again and please, please make the men’s toilets bigger and drier!

Keep on rocking into 2017 y’all.

Yola Announces 2022 Headlining Tour

Yola Announces 2022 Headlining Tour

Channeling the title of her sophomore LP Stand For Myself , Yola will lead her own headlining tour in Spring 2022.

“Considering how much fun we’ve had playing Stand For Myself live on these returning summer shows, I cannot wait to get out on the road in February and see all of your beautiful faces as we play songs from this record and more,” the English-born singer explained via press release.

As has been her M.O. the past few years, Yola made yet another splash at Newport Folk this past year, entertaining the scaled-down Folk On event by appearing alongside the legendary Chaka Khan .

After a string of arena shows with Chris Stapleton – and a stop at Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend – Yola will perform from February to May 2022, with headlining gigs at big-name venues like the Ryman Auditorium, The Boulder Theatre and The Fillmore.

For tickets and more info visit Yola’s official website.

As for COVID-19, organizers note, “The health and safety of Yola, her band, her crew, and her fans is of the utmost importance to us all. We are aware that safety precautions and best practices concerning COVID-19 are constantly changing and as a team we will continue to monitor the situation. Fans should be prepared that best practices for the show they want to attend may include providing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test, as well as following industry, local or national guidance surrounding the wearing of masks. We all want to get back on the road, but we want to do that safely and in a way that ensures sustainability for our industry.”

Yola Announces EP ‘My Way’ & Intimate US Tour

yola concert tour

Yola is gifting fans in earnest.

Because the Soul-filled songbird has announced a brand new EP and hatched US tour dates too.

Full story below…

The GRAMMY-nominated star, who earned praise aplenty for her performance in 2022’s ‘Elvis’ –  revealed that her project ‘My Love’ will be landing on May 24.

Anchored by the sounds that have inspired her, the eclectic EP will be preceded by lead single ‘Future Enemies’ – due February 9.

The singer will be taking to stages across the US ahead of its release in what is being billed as an intimate tour.

Speaking on the EP and its accompanying trek, Yola said:

“Welcome to my new era: a utopia of Black creativity, freedom and power. I cannot wait for fans to hear my new music – written and conceived in rooms of diversity – inspired by music I’ve long loved from Janet Jackson to Anderson .Paak to Mary J. Blige. I’m taking these new songs on the road to play for fans to hear it first in intimate venues– true fans know I’ve always been genre-fluid, experimenting and reworking my catalogue through live performance to encompass my love of soul, R&B, electronica and beyond. If you’ve seen the shows you already know where this is heading. This new music is the culmination of that work. This project is also born of my desire to surround myself with creatives of color, to express myself on every level of making this music, and finally, to do this all my way.” googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'); if (pubwise.enabled === true) { pwpbjs.que.push(function () { pwRegisterLazyLoad(gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'], 2, [250,0,250,0], 0, 768, 2); }); }else{ googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk']]); } });

Easy Eye Sound

“It’s a paradigm shift.”

And as simply as that, Yola encapsulates the giddy expansiveness, stunning emotional breadth, and exponential musical growth of her sophomore album  Stand For Myself , out July 30. She may only be saying four words, but it’s a whole new world.

Everything about the album—musically, lyrically, spiritually—explores the epiphany that making decisive choices leads to freedom. If her critically acclaimed 2019 debut  Walk Through Fire  was an exhilarating exercise in country soul,  Stand For Myself  explores the concept of genre. The album features a fluidity of sound that defies categorization weaving elements of symphonic soul, mellifluous pop melodies, disco grooves, rootsy rawness, and ecstatic gospel power into a package with instant appeal.

For those who fell in love with the singular British artist on  Walk Through Fire —and the love affair was fierce with both critics and the Recording Academy which recognized Yola with four Grammy nominations— listening to  Stand For Myself  is like stepping out of Kansas into Oz. Home may have been cozy and full of great songs, but it’s time to take the Yola ride in full Technicolor. And there’s no place like  Stand For Myself.

“The album is like a window into my mind, my life experiences, my politics, my hopeful and sentimental sides, and my hope for humanity at large,” she says of the 12-track collection that covers a wide swath of ground in its 45 minute-plus running time. At her most melodically and lyrically free, it is an album of both artistic freedom and subtle social commentary, that Yola hopes will connect personally with anyone who has experienced being made to feel “other.”

Yola makes exciting new vocal choices on  Stand For Myself . While her gale force power remains undiminished, she probes the layers of her instrument. “So often people come out all guns blazing and they don’t navigate nuance,” she says of her purposeful vocal approach. “I thought,  do you know what? Instead of punching out of the gate with absolutely everything I have, I’m going to really try and navigate nuance. ”

The results show themselves in glorious fashion as she pushes herself to both higher and lower registers, modulates her attack with laser-like precision and generally explores new textures on songs like the transporting title track, the addictive “If I Had To Do It All Again” and the slow-burning “Great Divide” which deftly balances grit and light.

Lyrically, she explores the difference between surviving and thriving (the languid R&B soul-searcher “Barely Alive”); inventively imagines new outcomes grappling with mortality (the inventive “Break The Bough”); frolics in the intersection of sentimentality and sexuality (the deeply sensual “Starlight”); recognizes the value of allyship (“Be My Friend” featuring vocal contributions from Brandi Carlile); and takes control of her own destiny on the anthemic title track. In examining and embracing the various elements of her identity: black, female, empathic, creative, erotic, bawdy, sophisticated, curious, intelligent, and more, Yola takes listeners on a journey to self-actualization that they might not even realize they’ve been on until the album ends.

“That’s it,” she says accompanied by one of her deeply infectious laughs. “I want to trick people into empathy and self-actualization!”

On the title track, she urges the listener to stand for themselves and those around them by challenging biases that fuel bigotry, inequality and tokenism which have deeply impacted her personal life and professional career. “It is about how people continue to bury their heads in the sand to hide from inconvenient truths that create a profound need to change how they think,” she says.

Her own journey to  Stand For Myself  was a somewhat circuitous route, for which, in hindsight, Yola could not be more grateful.

As the anniversary of her debut album approached in February 2020, the artist was intended to embark on opening dates in arenas and stadiums with Chris Stapleton, headline and festival gigs, and a journey to Australia to play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis biopic starring Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker and Austin Butler as Elvis. Second album recording was to happen sometime in and around all of that. She got in one show with Stapleton before COVID-19 derailed those plans and headed home with an eerie sense of the unknown looming in front of her.

Finding herself in lockdown back in Nashville allowed Yola to have something she hadn’t experienced in a year, time.

“I wasn’t seeing anybody and I was just staying up until five o’clock in the morning until my brain was really fuzzy and hazy and then ideas would just jump out,” she says. “I studied my creative process to the point where I knew what kind of state my brain needed to be in to generate ideas and knew what time of day my ideas turn up and so the whole process was ‘Okay, I’m going to start writing some things now explicitly for this record.’”

Over the course of some weeks she brought her early morning visions to life, alongside song ideas she had been germinating for the last decade. Pandemic-penned ideas were developed with Joy Oladokun, Ruby Amanfu, fellow Highwoman Natalie Hemby, Bobby Wood, Pat McLaughlin, and more. She headed back into the studio for a week in October 2020 with  Walk Through Fire  producer Dan Auerbach and a fresh band of collaborators including Dap-King bassist Nick Movshon (Sharon Jones, Amy Winehouse), drummer Aaron Frazer, who plays with Durand Jones and the Indications and is an emerging artist in his own right, and in-demand session percussionist Sam Bacco (Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash), among others.

The pair got the work done quickly thanks to Yola’s own prodigious studio work, her new sense of purpose and the ability to work with a creative partner who understood her in a new way. “ Walk Through Fire  was a collaboration, in the truest sense of the word,” she says of the album that grew out of her personal story of literally and figuratively surviving harrowing experiences that spawned fan favorites like the title track and “Faraway Look.” “It was a getting-to-know-you record.” She says, “Dan and I talked about the music that we had in common, and then we found that middle ground.”

After a year of touring, learning, writing, and introspection Yola was able to record  Stand For Myself  as the person she has known herself to be for years because what wasn’t new about the album was her innate sense of self. She wanted to show her vulnerability, her hope, her intricacies, and to ultimately uncover all of those things for the listener.

“I want people to feel like they know a dark-skinned black woman, a little better,” she says. “I could be the first, and all with an English accent and a chocolate bar skin tone. I will be an example of nuance that one can reference that someone might not have had, because the media does not want to portray us in a way that is nuanced.”

If, she says, the first record was about introducing a person who, at a low point, recognized the need to ask for help, this second one illuminates that “I’ve been proven through this fire and I’m back to where I started, the real me. I kind of got talked out of being me and now I’m here. This is who I’ve always been in music and in life. There was a little hiatus where I got brainwashed out of my own majesty, but a bitch is back.”
