Jayco Herald Sun Tour cancelled for the third year running

"ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges" have seen another edition of the race cancelled..

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour, Australia’s oldest stage race, has been cancelled for a third-straight year. The 2023 edition of the race through regional Victoria won’t be run “due to ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges.”

In a statement to CyclingTips, race organisers explained that they had “been working diligently behind the scenes in a bid to make the event possible next year” but that, after much consideration, “there are now genuine health and work safety issues for riders and staff” that ultimately forced both the men’s and women’s races to be shelved.

It is not clear what those “health and work safety issues” are but CyclingTips has requested further information from race organisers.

“This has not been an easy decision, or easy process to arrive at this point, and as custodians of this historic race we are disappointed that it will not be proceeding in 2023,” said Jayco Herald Sun Tour chairman Tom Salom. “We thank the [Victorian state] government and industry stakeholders for their collective efforts, and we are acutely aware of the importance of this as an event across the state.”

The Sun Tour last ran in 2020 when now-Giro d’Italia-winner Jai Hindley took out the men’s event, and Lucy Kennedy won her second-straight edition of the women’s race. The 2021 Sun Tour was cancelled due to “the uncertainty and unpredictability caused by the impact of COVID-19”.

There were plans to bring the race back in 2022, but again the knock-on effects from COVID proved a barrier . “The unpredictability that COVID-19 brings to our event presents too many challenges for us to proceed next year,” Salom said in September 2021. “In particular, the quarantine restrictions that come with COVID made it very difficult to attract the best international riders.”

Again, the hope was for the race to return in 2023 but those plans, too, have now been abandoned.

CyclingTips understands that the contract to run the Sun Tour, held by GTR Events in recent years, expired during the pandemic and was not renewed.

The Sun Tour was held every year from its first edition in 1952 right through until 2009 but has been held less consistently since. The 2010 race wasn’t held due to a clash with that year’s Road World Championships in Geelong and the 2012 edition wasn’t held either, as organisers worked to move the race from its traditional October timeslot to February. The race returned in 2013 but was only a domestic-level event, before returning to the international calendar in 2014.

The Sun Tour ran every year from 2013 through to 2020, with international stars like Chris Froome, Esteban Chaves, and Dylan van Baarle taking overall victories, but hasn’t been held since 2020. Race organisers hope the event will return in 2024. “Our focus will now turn to the future and planning for the 2024 edition of Australia’s oldest stage race which proudly lists Olympians and Grand Tour winners amongst its honour roll,” Salom said.

In other news on the Australian summer of racing, Race Torquay, the one-day race for women and men held in the days before the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, also doesn’t appear to have survived the COVID pandemic. The race’s only edition was held in 2020 (with Brodie Chapman and Sam Bennett taking wins) but after being cancelled alongside Cadel’s Race in 2021 and 2022 due to the pandemic, Race Torquay hasn’t returned.

There’s more positive news to be found elsewhere on the Australian summer racing calendar, though. After two years as the domestic-level Santos Festival of Cycling, the Tour Down Under returns in 2023. For the first time ever, the women’s event will join the men’s TDU as a WorldTour-level event. Cadel’s Race, too, returns after a two-year absence.

2023 Jayco Herald Sun Tour cancelled but set to return in 2024

Planning, timing and workforce challenges force cancellation for a third year

The winner of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour when it last ran in 2020 was this year's Giro d'Italia victor Jai Hindley

International racing is returning to Australia after the COVID-19 pandemic with the Santos Tour Down Under confirmed for January 2023. However the Jayco Herald Sun Tour organisers confirmed on Monday that their race would not be held in 2023 as other factors hampered the return of the nation's oldest stage race.

The men's race was first held in 1952 and a women's edition was also added in 2018, with the stage-races providing an opportunity for local riders and teams to race against WorldTour professionals who were in Australian for the Santos Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

While other races are returning after the re-opening of borders this year, the men's and women's Herald Sun Tour – last won by Jai Hindley and Lucy Kennedy in 2020 – will be absent for an extra year.

The organisers said in statement that ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges had led to the decision.

“This has not been an easy decision, or easy process to arrive at this point, and as custodians of this historic race we are disappointed that it will not be proceeding in 2023," Jayco Herald Sun Tour Chairman, Tom Salom, said.

Tour Down Under returns with Mount Lofty and a prologue but no Willunga Hill Hindley sews up Herald Sun Tour title as Groves takes final stage Kennedy takes overall Women's Herald Sun Tour title after thrilling finale

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour generally has a stage in Victoria's capital city of Melbourne and winds its way through the state, not only giving domestic riders a rare opportunity to race against top level cyclists but many communities a chance to turn out and watch high level racing on their home roads. "We thank the government and industry stakeholders for their collective efforts, and we are acutely aware of the importance of this as an event across the state," said Salom.

"Our focus will now turn to the future and planning for the 2024 edition of Australia's oldest stage race which proudly lists Olympians and Grand Tour winners amongst its honour roll." The Jayco Herald Sun Tour usually rounds out the summer of Australian racing in early February.

The 2023 Australian race calendar will begin with the Bay Crits in Geelong from January 1 to 3, continuing with the Australian National Road Championships from January 7 to 10 and then heading over to South Australia for the men's and women's Tour Down Under from January 14 to 22.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will now signal the end of the Australian block of racing, with the Women's WorldTour race on  January 28 and the men's WorldTour race on January 29.

Herald Sun Tour

The Herald Sun Tour is an Australian professional bicycle race held in Melbourne and provincial Victoria , sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The first tour was held in October 1952 as a six-day event. It is now held annually over five days in February, though as of 2024 the most recent edition was in 2020. It is named after the Herald Sun , Melbourne's only daily tabloid newspaper. It was originally known as the Sun Tour after The Sun News-Pictorial , and changed its name when The Sun News-Pictorial merged with The Herald in 1990.

2021 and beyond

In 1952 the first general classification winner was Keith Rowley, a Maffra sheep farmer, in a time of 42 h 57 min 55 s. The first King of the Mountain and Sprint champion was Jack (John) McDonough from Coburg .

Australian cyclists dominated the first 30 editions of the race, before its status rose and began attracting overseas stars. By the year 2000, the race had shifted to October and Australia's cyclists racing in Europe began to compete in the race. The resulting rise in the event's standard saw the race become rated by the UCI for the first time in 2005. Several notable Australian cyclists have won the General classification including Stuart O'Grady in 2008, Baden Cooke in 2002, Neil Stephens in 1986, and Russell Mockridge in 1957.

The 2004 race was conducted from 14 to 24 October 2004 and involved 85 cyclists in seventeen teams of five. Thirteen stages were completed with a total distance of 1110.7   km, 119 intermediate sprints and 37 hill climbs, including the two category one climbs of Mount Baw Baw and in the Otway Ranges . Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad won the General classification in the time of 26 h 39 min 55 s. Karl Menzies won the sprint classification and Phillip Thuaux won the Mountains classification.

After the 2009 race, the organisers of the Herald Sun Tour proposed moving the race from its traditional October date to February, with no edition in 2010. Cycling Australia approved the move, [1] but in the face of opposition from the UCI, [2] the plans never came to fruition. In the end, the 2010 race was "held over" due to the 2010 UCI Road World Championships being held in Geelong and Melbourne , and the race returned to the calendar in October 2011. [3] The UCI accepted a change of date the following year, with a January 2013 date instead of October 2012, but downgraded the race from 2.1 to a National Event, preventing most professional teams from across the world from taking part. [4]

The next edition of the Tour was held from 5–9 February 2014, and regained a UCI 2.1 ranking, permitting top level trade teams to again compete. [5] Due to numerous bushfires across Victoria the last stage of the race was cancelled, with Orica–GreenEDGE rider Simon Clarke declared the winner. [6]

The 63rd edition of the Tour got a huge profile boost when reigning Tour de France champion Chris Froome of Team Sky confirmed he would be starting his 2016 season at the event, having previously participated in 2008 with the Barloworld team where he finished 4th overall. Froome won the overall title on the final stage on Arthurs Seat, making him the first defending Tour de France champion to win the race, with teammate Peter Kennaugh finishing second and Damien Howson of Orica-GreenEdge placing third. He also took the mountains classification. [7]

The 64th edition of the race was won by Damien Howson of Orica–Scott . [8]

The 65th edition of the Herald Sun Tour was won by Esteban Chaves of the World Tour ranked Mitchelton–Scott team. Michelton Scott dominated the general classification of the 2018 edition with teammates Cameron Meyer (2nd) and previous winner Damien Howson (3rd) rounding out the final podium. [9]

The 66th edition of the race was won by Dylan van Baarle of Team Sky . Rounding out the podium were Nick Schultz of Mitchelton–Scott and Michael Woods of EF Education First . [10]

In August 2020, the 2021 edition was cancelled due to the uncertainty and unpredictability caused by the impact of COVID-19 . The event was rescheduled to February 2022, [11] but was cancelled due to continuing uncertainty around the pandemic. [12]

In October 2022, the 2023 race was cancelled due to "ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges" but the race planned to return for 2024. [13] [14] However it failed to return for the 2024 season. [15]
