Maruti Suzuki recently launched the 2022 Wagon R with a pair of new engines and features, and also gave it mild cosmetic tweaks. Even the factory fitted CNG kit has been made available on more variants. Prices for the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R now range between Rs 5.40 lakh-7.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki has also used this opportunity to reshuffle the variant line-up and engine options available with each variant of the Wagon R. Here we take a detailed look at the variant-wise features and engine options available with the new Wagon R.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: gets two DualJet engine options

The biggest update on the new Wagon R is a pair of new engines sourced from the Celerio and the new Baleno . The Wagon R’s 68hp, 1.0-litre K10B engine has been replaced by the new 67hp, 1.0-litre K10C DualJet engine that’s offered on the Celerio.

Similarly, the larger 83hp, 1.2-litre K12M engine has been replaced by the 90hp, 1.2-litre K12N engine that’s offered on the new Baleno, Swift and the Dzire . Both engines continue to be offered with a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. Maruti Suzuki has also retained the factory-fitted CNG kit on the Wagon R.

This, of course, comes in the run up to the CAFE 2 norms, whereby, the Wagon R will have to comply with stricter emission norms as well as return better fuel economy. Features such as DualJet, Dual VVT (variable valve timing), cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and ISS (idle start-stop) tech on both the engines will help achieve the same.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: variant rejig

Maruti Suzuki has also taken this opportunity to revise the variant line-up on the Wagon R. Previously, the Wagon R was offered in three trims – LXi, VXi and ZXi – with the 1.0-litre K10B engine being offered on the LXi and VXi variants, with the latter also getting the AMT gearbox as an option. Meanwhile, the 1.2-litre K12M engine was offered on the VXi and ZXi variants, with both getting AMT gearbox options. The CNG kit was only offered on the base LXi variant.

Coming to the new Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki now offers it in four variants – LXi, VXi, ZXi and a new ZXi+ variant. Maruti Suzuki is offering the new 1.0-litre K10C engine on the LXi and VXi variants, while the 1.2-litre K10N engine is now available on the ZXi and ZXi+ variants. Additionally, the CNG kit with the 1.0-litre engine is now also available on the mid-spec VXi variant.

India’s favorite tall boy whose sales can’t be affected by the tsunami of SUVs, because no other can offer what the Wagon R has been delivering for decades. An airy cabin, outstanding mileage, a refined engine, a spacious boot, cheap maintenance, and chilling air conditioning. To add more, there are two engines on offer: a 1.0 L and a 1.2 L K-Series engine. The latter is a punchy engine with 4 cylinders, and it doesn’t stop it from offering a 24 kmpl average even with an AGS transmission. However, the CNG one takes it two steps further, giving 33.47 kmpl in most conditions. Features such as an infotainment screen, under-seat storage, retractable ORVMs, and steering-mounted controls.

For the 1.0 NA petrol engine:  If you are planning to get the regular and old 1L 3-cylinder engine, then it comes with LXI and VXI options only. If you are tight on budget and want decent features then the VXI variant is the most suitable for the price. It offers all must-have features and the LXI variant is almost empty with nothing to offer. 

For 1.2 NA petrol engine:  If your budget can be stretched and want a much better engine then a 1.2 L engine is the right pick. It comes with ZXI and ZXI+ variants. According to us, we recommend the ZXI variant over the ZXI+. It offers a much better deal. 

For the CNG option:  In the CNG option, there are only two variants, LXI and VXI. If you are tight on budget and can get aftermarket accessories, then the LXI variant is the right pick. If in case you want every feature in the CNG option then opt for the VXI variant.

The CNG variant offers great fuel efficiency and engine reliability. It is good in space inside the cabin with decent features on offer. If you are still not convinced about opting for Wagon R, then you might try the HYUNDAI GRAND I10 NIOS or the TATA TIAGO.

• The design of the Wagon R has grown with time. It continues to have the tallboy design language which helps in great headroom inside. The front design looks sophisticated with a short hood and decent build quality. The halogen headlights have a decent throw and could have been better.
• Coming to the side profile, it continues to have the same 14” alloys in the mid and top variants. The steel wheel is offered in the base variant giving a basic look to the WAGON R. The tall boy design with rising window line continues the same OG design. Now it is available in a dual-tone paint scheme as well that provides a more sporty look. 
• At the rear, it now gets a new design for the taillamps that has some resemblance to the Volvo’s design language. The boot space is great to accommodate your luggage. In the CNG option, you are compromised on the boot space. The loading lib is normal and stuffing luggage is not an issue. It continues to get WAGON R branding in the chrome above the number plate but now it misses on the variant badging. 

• As we step inside the cabin of the Wagon R, there is a sense of roominess and sophistication inside. The seats offer great comfort but the missing adjustable headrests take away a part of comfort. 
• The seat cushioning is great and there is no tiredness on long journeys. The rear seats offer great comfort, with ample knee room legroom. The cabin is wide enough to accommodate 3 passengers in the rear seat, making it a practical 5-seater. 
• The feature list on offer has all the necessary features that a car at this price should offer. The touch-screen infotainment is slick to use and feels responsive. It has connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

• The seating comfort of the Wagon R is always better than the competition. It offers great comfort with spacious interiors. The light color theme upholstery increases the sense of airiness inside the cabin. 
• The front seats offer great comfort. The seats are wide enough and the shoulders don’t rub against the passenger. One disappointing part is that now it gets nonadjustable headrests which may hamper the comfort levels inside the cabin. 
• The rear seats offer more space since the wheelbase has now been increased in this model. It has ample amount of knee room and leg room, and its tall boy design enables enough headroom for tall passengers.  The rear seats offer great practicality. But, in the CNG option, the Grand i10 Nios has an edge. It offers a 4-cylinder unit. The Wagon R’s engine has 3 cylinders. The comfort of the Nios is on an upper edge but Wagon R has a more wider and taller cabin. The quality of headlights on the I10 Nios is slightly better than the Wagon R unit.

What is it?

It’s a mid-cycle refresh for the current generation of the Maruti Wagon R , which has been around since 2019. In fact, it’s a minor refresh because there are no significant design changes to report and the list of extra equipment over the 2021 model is limited to alloy wheels and hill hold assist in the top-spec AMT version that we have tested here.

The 2022 Wagon R comes with the same tall boy stance but in a more modern avatar. For starters, the dual-tone option in the ZXI+ variant, wherein you get a black roof over the dark red colour on our test car, breaks the monotony. The 2022 model also gets 14-inch alloy wheels finished in black, something that was offered as an accessory before. In terms of range, the updated Wagon R can be had in four variants across six single-tone and two new dual-tone colour options. The 1.0-litre engine is available up to the VXi variant, whereas the 1.2-litre engine is available only from the ZXi trim onwards. Both engine options can be had with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT in specific variants.

Is the cabin any good?

One of the major selling points of all the generations of the Wagon R has been its interior and how incredibly spacious and practical it is for its size. The 2022 model builds on that and, like the exterior design, tries to make it more endearing to live with. It’s a comfortable space for a family of four; the boot is large and usable, and overall, the Wagon R continues to be an easy car to drive thanks to the light controls and superb visibility in every direction. What’s more, the overall look of the cabin has been slightly upgraded with the 2022 model.

The dual-tone cabin has been carried over from the 2021 car though the seats are trimmed in a slightly different shade of beige. The dash and other plastic elements retain the same grey shade as before. More importantly, like the old car, getting in and out of the Wagon R is effortless thanks to the wide opening doors and the ideal seat height. Although lacking visual flair, it’s a well-thought-out cabin as all the commonly used features, like the infotainment system and the air-con controls, are placed high up. In terms of space, there is loads of headroom and knee room on offer at the back.

The end result is a car that can easily accommodate six-footers in good comfort. The rear bench itself is well-shaped though the cushioning is a tad softer than we would like. The ZXi+ variant has all the basic features covered. There’s a 7.0-inch touchscreen system running Maruti's latest version of the Smartplay Studio UI that includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity with four speakers, USB and AUX connectivity. You also get steering-mounted controls, auto-folding electric mirrors with integrated ORVMs and a rear wiper. All versions now get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. From the VXi trim and upwards, hill hold assist in the AMT versions is offered as standard.

Is it nice to drive?

The Wagon R can be had with either a 1.0-litre or the fruiter 1.2-litre engine, and the latter is definitely nice to drive. It’s reasonably quiet and responsive, pulling cleanly from low revs, making it great for everyday commutes in traffic. Even when you up the pace, there is always more than enough power to keep up with fast-moving traffic. As part of the 2022 update, this 81bhp/113Nm 1.2-litre engine gets dual variable valve timing for higher claimed fuel efficiency as well as better real-world performance.

Speaking of real-world performance, the Wagon R AMT completed the 0-60kmph and 0-100kmph run in 5.91 and 12.73 seconds, respectively, in our tests, making it reasonably quick. The engine’s midrange grunt is reflected in our roll-on tests, with 20-80kmph coming up in just 6.89 seconds and 40-100kmph in an equally quick 9.79 seconds.

The five-speed AMT gearbox adds to the overall convenience of driving the Wagon R. Sure, it isn’t as refined as the one on the new Baleno , but for the price, it’s plenty good. Whether ambling along the city streets or cruising steadily on the highway, this AMT works well. It does show its bare roots when you want to reel in a gap in traffic, struggling to drop the gears quickly and leaving you with a brief pause before accelerating hard. That’s a consequence one has to live with. But when you are in a hurry you can resort to the manual mode, which will hold onto the gears and that is honestly a lot more effective.

On the other hand, leave the gearbox as is, and you will be rewarded with a highly fuel-efficient car when driven normally. In fact, in our fuel efficiency tests, the Wagon R AMT returned 19.31kmpl in the city and 22.34kmpl on the highway. The ride quality is on par with the segment. Over moderately smooth surfaces, the Wagon R remains unfazed and rides pretty flat with the suspension working without making it too obvious. It’s just that you end up hearing every other form of sound above 60kmph or so, be it engine noise, or road and wind noise. This car certainly needs more sound insulation.

Should you buy it?

There are very limited reasons not to. This 2022 update is a step in the right direction for the Wagon R range. The 1.2-litre AMT version, in particular, is plenty quick, fuel efficient and an incredibly practical city car. What makes it even better is that it’s not as barebones as one might think – for Rs 7.19 lakh ex-showroom, the 1.2-litre ZXI+ variant has all the essential features and some more. All in all, it’s good value and extremely usable, just like every iteration of the Wagon R in the past.
