Fantastic customer service

I have lived in Mainland for many years and Trip.com is our go to app for most travel plans. Cannot understand the recent spat of negative reviews, they do not seem authentic. There have been times when trip will call me directly to tell me of flight changes, amazing customer service in English. During covid they were very accommodating for quick changes, which happened often in China. Not really sure what customers are loo0king for in a travel company? But, this one does as good a job as any that are on line.

Latest visit to Cairo

Spacious room and bathroom with very good cleanliness quality. Hotel environment is quiet and located in a secured area guarded by check points. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Electrical amenities such as side lamps and hair dryer are not working, also outlets are not easily accessible. Reaching the hotel was not that easy due to lacking guiding signages!

It was a pleasant surprise that Max

It was a pleasant surprise that Max, senior manager of the customer service team, took the initiative to personally work with the airline to get the full refund for the flight I cancelled due to the schedule change by the airline. I had attempted a few times but the airline had not honored my cancellation request. I had given up. But the case got Max’s attention and was resolved. Thanks

I had some suspicions about using the service because I had not heard about it before. However, my Chinese colleagues confirmed it can be trusted. I booked the hotel and bullet train ticket through Trip.com and everything went smoothly. The only request I have is that the hotel name would also be written in Latin characters because at the last stages of the online booking process and confirmation email it was only in Chinese and I had to google to make sure I was booking the right hotel.

I am glad Eleanor able to assist me to resolve my problem for cancelling the booking. Yes, it was my fault that I have booked the wrong date but that is normal as every human made mistake. I really appreciated Eleanor able to assist and follow up with me and the hotel until the problem solved. Thank you so much trip.com and special thanks to Eleanor for resolving my issue until the end.

Customer service was fantastic

Customer service was fantastic, as responsive by phone as by e-mail. Jessie in particular was amazingly helpful to get our flight issue sorted and fully reimbursed after the airline we originally booked with made our whole trip too complicated. It was honestly one of the best customer experience I’ve had with a travel booking company. Thank you Jessie!

Customer service

Customer service 5 days before our scheduled trip, we received an email from Trip informing that our prepaid hotel had closed. We subsequently received a phonecall from Trip that clarified and solved our questions and doubts. Their recommendation for another hotel was also excellent and their refund prompt. Altogether excellent customer support, thank you!

Frustration and the runaround...

Frustration and the runaround is all i have been given by the crew at Trip.com. I spent countless hours trying to resolve an issue with missed connection flights due to rescheduling and Late departures. My purchasing connection insurance which one would have thought would give you a piece of mind has done nothing. They have not professionally addressed the issue and have failed to make re compensation. They just keep avoiding the issue and seems no one can make a decision. What a pain...

Mode of Payment

I like that you have Gcash as a payment method however i think theres a more better way to elevate our experience such as considering the GCredit or GGives option rather than just the regular balance of our Gcash Account. Apart from that, I'm all good.

Customer service lights are on but no ones home

It's all well and good having customer service available in 30 seconds but it's no good if they just keep saying that a team will get back to you regarding a time change and never do. Called twice, spoke to online service 3 times, each time told that I'd get contacted within the next 30/60 minutes (this was from 2 days before the flight up until the evening before) - and never received any call back. Go direct to the airline rather than using these people, if something goes wrong your screwed.

Dear Robert Hinge, Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. Kindly know that we will double-check the situation and contact you directly. We value your feedback and are committed to providing a satisfactory experience. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your feedback. Best regards, Avery Trip.com

I find the whole process easy, and the service offered, e.g. automatic check in and affordable cancellation insurance, which I’ve had to use a few times, make for an effortless booking process. Would recommend 👍

Price bait and switch experience

I was so relieved to find an affordable ticket price to Port St. Lucie to attend a funeral. I selected a return flight priced at $123. To my surprise, as I'm finalizing payment, a message pops up that the price had jumped to $181. I'm on a limited budget and was not happy at this jump. However, I decided to complete the transaction, not trusting if the price would change again in a nanosecond. I noticed the price had jumped $40 the next day.

Date of experience : May 02, 2024

Dear Sandra McKenzie, We appreciate your effort in notifying us about this issue. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Kindly note that flight ticket prices are subject to change over time and are determined by various factors, including market demand, availability, airline policies, and fuel costs, among others. Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee a fixed price for tickets as these factors can fluctuate. We recommend booking your tickets as soon as possible to secure the best available price at the time of booking. Thank you for your understanding, and if you have any further questions or require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your continued support. Best regards, Elizabeth Trip.com

Missed my last connection because of a delayed prior flight & was fully refunded for it.

I missed my last connection home as a result of a delayed prior flight. I was so worried as I was late arriving and rather stranded. I also had a couple of bad experiences in the past with other booking agencies that refused to help me in similar situations. However, as soon as I landed and was waiting on my luggage I contacted Trip via their online chat feature. It only took a matter of seconds before I was connected to a human agent. From start to finish they were reassuring, helpful and hopeful that the matter would be resolved. They recommended, to get to my final destination faster, to book and purchase a new flight myself. They also said it would be cheaper. It was and I was able to get on the next flight home. As soon as I landed and checked my email, Trip had refunded me the cost of my missed flight which easily covered my newly purchased one. The whole process was stress free and easy. I honesty couldn't recommend them enough for their customer service, especially Richmond who handled my case. Thanks so much again Richmond.

So I'm browsing for hotels and found one I've been eyeing offered at trip.com for about 30% lower than Booking and Agoda. That doesn't seem too good to be true, but I've also never used this site. Anyone with any experience with trip.com?

For those that want to read the long form the following is my experience with them.

I bought a couple of air tickets Calgary-Shanghai, through Trip.com. They showed up on the Tripadvisor flight search, and were twenty five percent lower than anyone else. I immediately bought one ticket, really wanting two tickets but it could have been my mistake. Then trying to buy a second ticket (for my wife), did the everything the same as before but at the very end was told it was sold out.

So I went online chat with them, and asked them, asking for a second ticket or a refund. The rep sent me a weblink, the same one I booked my first ticket with. I told him it was the same and said sold out at the end, but I tried to buy the second ticket as before on this link, and did get a second ticket for my wife. By this time the online rep had hung up the chat.

Upon closer inspection, however, the second air ticket for my wife was for a different departure time on the same day from Calgary, and meant she was on a different flight to Shanghai from San Francisco, arriving 12 hours later on a different day (the return flight was the same). So I immediately went back online chat, and asked the rep to change both to the same flight or cancel both tickets, and it was so soon that the flight booking didn't even show up on her computer. When it eventually showed up, she said that I couldn't cancel without paying 90% of the ticket price for some booking fee. She said sorry this was the airlines booking policy. I asked to just change the departure flight of either ticket to match the other, or else refund them both, that airlines normally had a 24 refund policy. She said no. I said could you please ask a supervisor. The following is the supervisor's return e-mail.

Dear VICTOR (Account: D254041****),

I tried to call you but was transferred to voice mail. So I am writing to you about the questions you mentioned on chat regarding Flight Booking. 5374325469.

First of all, you mentioned Mark gave you the link which caused the second flight . I checked the link and the link he sent to you is the online search page on which many flight packages are listed. This link does not indicate only one specific flight . And after the link was sent to you , you answered,” Yes I did all the fill in the blanks up till the end when it said flight sold out." When Mark wanted more details from you, there was no reply from you. So the window was closed. And When you book the ticket online, the flight details are listed on each page.

Secondly, when you started chat with Victoria, the ticket was not issued but was paid successfully. The booking status was in processing. When Victoria was confirming the booking details with you for booking security, the ticket was issued successfully. Please kindly noted that even if the ticket is not issued after we verify the booking detail with you, we apply the free cancellation but cannot guarantee. So now according to your booking policy, this ticket is non-refundable and unchangeable.

Now Booking 5374325469 and 5374077873 are still kept. If you have question, welcome to contact us.

Best regards,

I didn't quite know what to make of that. So I contacted both Air Canada and United Airlines by phone, the airlines on the tickets, and BOTH SAID THEY HAVE A 24 HOUR FULL CANCELLATION POLICY, but that the foreign booking companies formed their own rules. Very lucky for me, the United Airlines phone representative (Connie, and a big thank you if you read this), changed the departure flight of my wife to match my own.

I am an overseas Chinese, but so glad to be living in North America. Thanks, again, to United Airlines.

trip.com legit

Not one regular on Trip Advisor would recommend booking anything through TA, and there are much better search engines for flights than TA. A search engine merely searches the net for you and then presents the results, and you chose the cheapest option without doing any further research first.

I never ticked any such thing. Check the site.

Nor was there any notification on ther site of such a policy, ie non-cancellable or refundable.

I just used it and am having buyer's remorse. I booked a room and had to give my credit card but it's not "booked" until you get a confirmation email that can take up to 12-hours later (at least my email said it could take that long, but it only took about 10 minutes). The check-in time they listed wasn't until 7 PM when I accepted the terms but when I received the confirmation, there was a 3:00 check-in. If trip.com is not able to book it, you won't be charged. However, once you give them your credit card and they book it, your money is gone.

Be careful on the late check-ins because you will not be able to use the hotel's amenities until you check-in since you didn't book through the hotel's website. So basically you have to be watchful of the check-in time (because it can be later than a normal check-in time) and not need it right away because you pay and then wait to see if it's accepted.

I did check the site. For hotels, after you make your selection to book, comes the page where you enter your personal information. There's a red BOOK button to go on. Immediately under that button, almost touching it, is "By submitting this booking you agree to the Terms and Conditions & Privacy Policy ." with a link to the Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy.

The site does not treat me any different from you, so you did indeed tick it.

I can't know about notification of cancellation policy, because that's different for different hotels, but I see that it appears beside each of the possible room selections under "Policies."

Now, I agree there is no notice in the T&C or otherwise about fares being non-refundable, but it is naive to imagine that a cheapo site can do anything to offer a cheap fare but sell the cheapest available fare, which is always, including direct through the airline , non-refundable. In fact, the complete lack of information about cancels and refunds would put me off using them at all. So I take the uninformative T&C to, in fact, be highly informative in terms of whether I would use this site, which I would not, but imagining that their Asian base is why they behave as they do and contrasting that with "western" practices is absurd. Look around this forum at the many "western" travel sites with tons of complaints of the same kind.

Hence my belief that people who don't have a pretty solid grasp of the travel industry shouldn't let some web site make their decisions for them and should book direct with suppliers where the supplier web site makes them make knowing choices.

one of the conditions was that the ticket would not be issued straight away after booking, but within 72 hours of the flight departure. To get your ticket immediately was almost double the price.

once everything was paid, i received a payment confirmation to my email and held my breath waiting for the ticket to be issued within the week.

Pleasantly surprised to find that after 3 hours, the ticket was issued complete with a Virgin booking number. i looked up the flight on the Virgin website and was relieved to find it on their system, with correct details and everything.

i was nervous as trip.com doesnt have any published reviews and reading bad reviews on tripadvisor didnt help. the four star rating on skyscanner.com is a bit annoying as i cant find a way to see what other users experience was like and their recommendations. skyscanner shouldn't show the star rating if they cant back it up with a review system similar to what tripadvisor has.

if you choose to use trip.com, sign up for an account as all your ticketing info is held there, and get the app. it was an easy and quick method to book a cheap flight , especially with a deal that couldnt be missed.

i found the booking terms and conditions to be very clear. they have a booking and price guarantee if the airline has a change, however if you change your mind or cancel your flight , thats when it becomes non-negotiable and there is no refund.

I just ran AKL/MEL through SkyScanner, selected a Virgin, and booking with Virgin direct was $1 cheaper than trip.com. Why insert a third party between yourself and the supplier?

I would not choose to trip.com, and I certainly wouldn't want to add the complication of a third party and pay more for he privilege.

I booked, received a confirmation and a week later received a phone call asking my nationality, which is American. Half an hour later they called back to tell me only Chinese people may book and my reservation has to be cancelled, if I agreed within 3 hours they would refund me in full. I accepted as I saw no real option. I called trip.com to ask for an explanation which they are investigating. I provided a phone number and address from America, it was clear where I was from. This is fraud.

Very reasonable price bt u need to issue tickets within 1 day, or else for people it's just so breath taking! Otherwise pretty well♥️

Hi Stanly Saji, Thank you for your feedback regarding the ticket issuance timeframe. We understand that it can be challenging when there is a requirement to issue tickets within one day. We appreciate your positive feedback about our reasonable prices and will take your suggestion into consideration as we continue to improve our services. If you have any further concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your support. Best regards, Catherine Trip.com

Extremely accommodating

Extremely accommodating, friendly helpful staff, in particular Thomas on reception. Excellent meal and breakfast. Awesome staff in the dining room. Really appreciated quiet room, great drapes that helped to darken the room at night. Great location to Victoria station and central to shops, cinemas and pubs

I find the whole process easy

Our Verdict: Is Trip.com Legit?

We’re sure anyone with internet access knows what Trip.com is. This travel booking website has proudly made a name for itself, making it one of the biggest and most popular online travel agencies in the world. We’re regular users of Trip.com, and there are so many things to like about it, from its affordable rates to its wide array of travel services. However, is Trip.com legit? If you’ve never used its services before, you may have concerns about its legitimacy and whether it’s safe to book travel through it. Well, today is your lucky day, as we’re going to answer all of your questions. After reading this post, you’ll have a better understanding of Trip.com and be able to decide whether to use it for your upcoming trip. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

What is Trip.com?

Before we answer whether Trip.com is legit or not, let’s get to know about the online travel agency first. Trip.com is a Chinese company that works in the travel industry. It’s not just “a” travel agency, though, as it’s one of the biggest in the world. This isn’t shocking, considering it has more than 400 million users and offices in over 200 different countries.

Founded in 1999, its headquarters are located in Singapore. Also, CTrip, one of China’s biggest travel companies, acquired Trip.com in 2017. Thus, if you (or any English speaker) visit CTrip’s official website, you’ll be redirected to Trip.com. As a reputable company, Trip.com offers a wide range of travel-related services. These include flights, hotels, trains, rental cars, and even tours. No matter what service you’re looking for, Trip.com always has the solution for you.

Is Trip.com cheap?

While there are many big travel websites out there, Trip.com is considered to be a cheap option. It offers competitive prices on flights, hotels, and other travel services. In fact, we usually find Trip.com to be one of the cheapest websites to book travel, especially if we’re willing to be flexible with our travel dates and book in advance. By selling directly to the customers, it has low overhead costs so that it can offer you services at lower prices. However, it’s important to note that prices on Trip.com can vary depending on the time of year, the destination, and the type of travel service you are booking, just like any other website.

How to get the best deals on Trip.com?

As frequent travelers, we’re always looking for a way to get the best deal possible. If you decide to use Trip.com , we have several useful tips that may help you get the best deals!

  • Be flexible with your travel dates: Whether you want to use Trip.com to book a flight, hotel, or rental car, it’s best to avoid booking at a peak season to get the best prices. Try to see which dates offer the most reasonable prices. For instance, our flight to Montenegro’s hidden gems, Kotor and Perast , was cheap as we flew in early September instead of the peak season, which is the summer months. It’s one of the things that makes Trip.com legit.
  • Book the services in advance: We’re never sick of giving this classic tip. The earlier you book your flight or hotel, the bigger the chances are for you to get a good deal.
  • Make a Trip.com account: If you haven’t had a Trip.com account, it’s time to make one. Yes, the website often offers great deals and discounts exclusively to its members.
  • Download and use the Trip.com application: Booking a hotel or flight from your laptop screen may be more convenient since it has a bigger screen. However, if you want to get a better deal, try booking using the Trip.com app. We often get exclusive deals and discounts that aren’t available on the website.
  • Bundle & Save: Before you check out the prices, it’s good to have a proper travel itinerary. Once you know the exact dates of your trip and where you want to stay, you can consider using Trip.com’s Bundle & Save feature, which includes flights and hotels. This can help you save money on your overall travel costs.
  • Collect Trip Coins: By booking flights and hotels, writing reviews, and making posts about your trips, you can earn Trip Coins. 100 Trip Coins are the equivalent of 1 USD. So, the more you have, the bigger your discount is.
  • Check the top deals: Trip.com also regularly offers special deals, promos, and discount codes. For instance, students can get a flight discount on certain services. Additionally, you can also get a special deal by booking a flight directly on the official website. Learn more about Trip.com’s special offers here !

What do users say about Trip.com?

We’ve used Trip.com so many times, and our overall experience with the travel agency has never been bad; not even once. We’re not the only ones who feel this way, though. On Trip.com’s official website, there’s a review section that leads you to Trustpilot , a trustworthy review website. As of this writing, Trip.com has a score of 4.1/5 from almost 60,000 reviews on the website. And based on those reviews, Trustpilot labels Trip.com as “great”.

When you have a closer look at the reviews, you’ll see that 73% of them are 5 and 4 stars. The majority of the reviewers are thrilled with Trip.com’s excellent customer service, easy-to-understand UI, wide selections of hotels and destinations, as well as its cheap rates. Yes, there are some complaints from the reviewers, too. However, it doesn’t take long for Trip.com’s customer service agents to reply to the complaints and provide them with the necessary assistance.

In addition to that, you can easily find its customer service contact on its website. You can use the online chat feature, email, or call its global access number (+1-646-362-8606) if you want to speak with the agent directly.

What are the pros and cons of using Trip.com?

Like other legitimate travel agencies, Trip.com has its own good and bad, too. Based on our experience, there are several pros and cons of using its services, which are:

  • Competitive prices: The travel services, especially the flights, are often very affordable compared to its competitors. We also like how it has no hidden fee most of the time.
  • Tons of services: Trip.com is a convenient one-stop shop for all your travel needs. From booking flights and hotels to renting a car and buying attraction tickets, it can do quite literally everything.
  • Amazing customer service: As we said earlier, the customer service of Trip.com is great. One can easily contact the agent, and it’s available 24/7.
  • Great for trips to China: Compared to other online travel agencies, we can confidently say that Trip.com is the best choice for trips to China. It has better flight and hotel options in China.
  • It’s better to book directly from the official airline or hotel websites: This isn’t a flaw that only Trip.com has. Whether you’re using Trip.com or other travel booking websites, chances are you can get better prices and better change policies if you book your flight or hotel from its official website.

So, is Trip.com legit?

Yes, to answer your question, Trip.com is absolutely legitimate. It’s a safe online travel agency for booking travel. It has been operating for over 20 decades, so you don’t have to question its legitimacy. Trip.com offers competitive prices and a wide range of travel services. Also, to ensure everything is safe, it uses a highly secure website and SSL encryption, so all your information is safe. We also think the mobile application is easy to use. We’ve used Trip.com for God knows how long, and so far, we’ve never experienced anything bad. Even if we do have problems, its amazing customer service will be ready to offer help and solutions.

What is Trip.com used for?

Trip.com is one of the world’s largest travel agencies that offers a variety of travel-related services, which include flights, hotels, trains, car rentals, airport transfers, as well as tours and attraction tickets.

Does Trip.com have an app?

Yes, Trip.com has a mobile application for both Android and iOS devices.

Is Trip.com Legit? Reviews and How to Save Money

trip.com legit

Trip.com is the only website I use when booking a trip to China. However, it has increasingly also become a popular travel site for booking trips to the United States, Canada, and abroad.

In this article, I'll review Trip.com, let you know whether it's good for travel in the United States, and give you some helpful hints for using it to save money.

Is Trip.com Legit?

trip dot com home page

Let's start with the first question: Is Trip.com legit? Yes, Trip.com is legitimate and completely safe to use (at least as safe as any other travel website like Expedia or Travelocity). I've used Trip.com and CTrip.com (its parent company) for over 10 years.

Trip.com is now owned by CTrip , one of the largest travel companies in China (it was acquired by CTrip in 2017). If you've used CTrip to book your flights, you'll notice most English speakers are now automatically directed to Trip.com while Chinese speakers are directed to CTrip.com.

Is Trip.com a Chinese Company?

Yes, Trip.com is owned and operated in China.

Politics aside, this means that you'll often be dealing with Chinese customer support staff. In my experience, there are definitely some cultural and language issues you'll encounter if you need to get in touch with customer support.

Pros and Cons of Trip.com

Just like any other travel site, there are good and bad things about using Trip.com. Here are some based on my personal experience:

Pros of Trip.com

  • Earn “Trip Coins” (reward points) every time you book
  • Often very cheap prices (especially for airline tickets)
  • Easy to contact customer service via chat
  • Excellent for trips to China

Cons of Trip.com

  • Overseas customer support means there can be language and cultural issues
  • Still better to book hotels and flights directly through hotel/airline websites when possible
  • Polarizing User Interface (UI) – You'll either love it or hate it
  • Foreign (China) based company

Let me give a quick overview of the pros and cons:

(Pro) Trip Coins – When you book with Trip.com, you get Trip Coins, which are basically reward points you can use for booking future trips. It works out to around 5% of your purchase price, so it's not bad.

(Pro) Cheap Prices – Trip.com offer prices that are often much cheaper compared to competitors like Travelocity and Expedia, especially for airline tickets. You're typically not going to be surprised by any hidden fees either.

(Pro) Easy to Contact Customer Support via Chat – Opening up a customer chat is extremely easy (and not buried in a million sub-menus as is often the case with other websites).

trip.com legit

(Pro) Great for Chinese Travel – This won't be applicable to a lot of people reading this, but if you're traveling within China, Trip.com is basically  the site to use, especially for booking Train tickets.

(Con) Overseas Customer Support – Trip is getting better in regard to its customer support but it's still not uncommon to get overseas customer support which can lead to communication problems.

(Con) Better to Book Direct – There's one flaw with all travel booking websites (whether it's Trip.com or any others) and that's that it is better to book direct through airline and hotel websites when you can. Often you'll get better prices, more flexible cancellation/change policies, and easier customer service when you do.

(Con) Polarizing User Navigation – You're either going to love the UI for Trip.com or hate it. There's not a lot of bells and whistles which means you're not going to get inundated with a million upsells but you also won't be able to find detailed information on hotels.

(Con) Foreign Based Company – Trip.com is Chinese owned. For better or worse, I recognize in the current political climate this can be an issue for some.

Trip.com Reviews vs. Other Travel Websites

Trip.com ranks far better than other travel booking websites such as Travelocity, Expedia, and Booking.com on review aggregator websites such as Trust Pilot and the Better Business Bureau . To be blunt, most other travel booking websites rank terribly  while Trip.com ranks fairly well. To be fair though, there is likely a bit of “gamesmanship” involved with how Trip.com is managing its reviews, i.e., the score is likely over-inflated.

Is Trip.com Good for US Airline Tickets?

Trip.com is  the website for booking travel to China, but it is also good for booking trips to and within the United States. In many cases, Trip.com is the cheapest booking option, especially for airline tickets.

In my experience, the price of airline tickets on Trip.com is lower than on other travel booking websites. You might be suspicious of these prices that are “too good to be true” but, as someone who has booked countless flights through Trip.com, I can tell you there's nothing to fear.

Is Trip.com Good for Booking Hotels in the US?

When it comes to booking hotels, Trip.com, in my experience, is very comparable to other websites such as Expedia or Travelocity. However, I rarely book Western hotels through Trip.com simply because it's usually not the cheapest option.

trip.com coins

With that being said, it's worth noting that most hotel stays will earn you approximately 5% back in Trip Coins, which most other websites don't offer. So if Trip.com and another website offer the same price for the same hotel, keep this 5% bonus in mind.

Is Trip.com Good for Booking China Trains, Hotels, and Flights?

Trip.com is good for booking US trips, but where it really shines is travels to China. This probably won't concern many of the people reading this, but if you're planning to travel to China, then Trip.com is going to be your best friend.

Why is Trip.com so good for booking Chinese travel? First, in terms of train bookings, it's essentially the only English-friendly booking website. Second, when it comes to airline tickets and hotel bookings, most Western websites have limited options for Chinese flights and hotels.

How to Book a China Train Travel with Trip.com

china train booking on trip

Traveling by train in China is wonderful—booking train tickets is a different story. Most Chinese people use WeChat to book train travel, but this isn't an option for foreigners.

Foreigners have three options for booking trains:

  • Book at the train station. This requires you to get there hours in advance, try to figure out the train schedule, and deal with language barriers. The only advantage is there's no booking fee.
  • Book through the official Chinese railway website 12306.cn . Not an option for foreigners really, as you can't pay with a foreign credit card.
  • Book through Trip.com . Enjoy an extremely Western-friendly website, view easy-to-understand schedules online, and book easily with your credit card. The downside is you'll have to pay a $5 to $10 booking fee.

Is Trip.com Good for Booking Hotels and Flights in China?

Trip.com is also a better option for booking hotels and flights in China than other Western travel booking websites because of the number of options.

Western travel booking websites like Booking.com and Priceline will have many Chinese hotels and airlines available, but they won't have as many as Trip.com. Now, to be fair, if a Chinese hotel isn't available to be booked on your favorite Western travel website, you probably don't want to stay there if you're a first-time traveler to China (Chinese hotel standards are vastly different than Western Hotel standards).

For airline tickets, the same is true: Trip.com will have far more flight options to China than Western travel booking websites do. Western websites will have the major Chinese airlines like China Southern and China Eastern, but they won't have the smaller Chinese airlines.

In conclusion, Trip.com is a perfectly safe and legitimate website for booking travel both in Western regions like the United States, Canada, and Europe, as well as in China. Airline ticket prices tend to be priced below average compared to other major travel booking websites, and when it comes to booking trips within China, Trip.com is the best  choice.

Have you tried booking on Trip.com? If so, what has your experience been? Let me know in the comments below.

I called to complain but trip.com denies its their system issue and try to talk to the hotel but failed. I sincerely advised dont book from them anymore !!

do not trust this website or app!!! i lost over $6k and american express believes them. i’m so disappointed in american express too.

Despite what many of the comments have said here, I’ve had an excellent experience with Trip.com. The communications have been super clear and the refund process super quick with refunds coming back into my account within days as opposed to weeks for many vendors. Whenever I’ve had to speak with customer service through the live chat to amend details or ask questions I’ve been extremely impressed with how efficiently my requests are handled. I’ve only booked hotels through them though as I almost never book flights through a third party vendor due to the added complexities around needing to make changes etc. I wanted to point out an inaccuracy in the article that 12306.cn does take foreign bank card now, as of September 2023 when I last booked a set of train tickets through an Australian bank card with them. I agee that trip.com provides the best user experience for booking Chinese train tickets as a foreigner, but the booking fees end up being quite steep if you need to book a lot of travel. 12306.cn doesn’t take any fees and it also tells you how many tickets are left which is very helpful as seats can sell out very quickly. The learning curve is all in booking the first ticket and then after that it’s super easy.

Is Trip.com a Legitimate Travel Business?

Looking to go on vacation? You might've stumbled across Trip.com, but is it a legit company to use? Is it trustworthy?

Trip(dot)com offers excellent discounts on travel-related services. Are you considering using them for an upcoming trip? Using the website to book flights, hotel reservations, car rentals, and more can help you save lots of money, but will they add any real value to your long-awaited vacation?

What are the risks associated with booking travel-related services from Trip? How do people feel about the website? Are there any other reliable alternatives to it?

What Is Trip.com?

Founded in 1999, Trip is one of the longest-running businesses in its sector. Whether you are booking a flight with a favorite airline, looking for a hotel overseas, or renting a car, it offers almost everything you might need while on vacation. The best part is that all of this is available at a massively discounted price.

Being an international company, Trip covers nearly all regions, with operations in almost 200 countries. Thanks to the extensive hotel network that it has built and the flight network it has set up connecting 5000 cities, Trip offers excellent discounts and offers. Moreover, to serve the needs of global customers, the website supports nearly 44 languages.

Although the company has grown enormously, you might still be wondering whether it's legitimate and trustworthy.

Is Trip.com Legit?

Yes, Trip(dot)com is legit and not a scam. Here's why:

  • Trip(dot)com Group, a NASDAQ-listed company, owns this website.
  • Over two decades in business suggests it isn't a shady company.
  • Its extensive network of hotels and flights suggests other businesses trust the company.
  • The company currently has more than 45,000 employees, indicating it's a well-established enterprise.

So what do other customers say about it?

What Do People Think About Trip.com?

The company has a rating of 3.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot . Even though it seems pretty good, nearly 26 percent of its reviews are one-star. Based on the number of reviews it has, over 7,000 customers are dissatisfied.

However, after checking reviews in more detail, it appears most problems mentioned are related to the services booked through the website, over which Trip had little control. Some people complained about dirty rooms in hotels, airlines canceling flights at the last minute, or poor customer support from hotels they booked.

Trip is not responsible for all such things, but the blame is on businesses listed on the website. In other words, most negative reviews don't refer to the company as having caused the issue. However, some people have shared issues specific to Trip(dot)com. Some of them are:

  • Since the customer service representatives are not native English speakers, a language barrier is a major concern.
  • There is a slow response time from the company when it comes to handling complaints, which results in further delays.
  • The refund process takes a long time.

However, contrary to other companies, a Trip representative has responded to more than 91 percent of negative reviews and given reviewers instructions on how to resolve the issue and avoid it in the future. The company clearly cares about its reputation.

But why should you choose Trip over booking directly with the businesses?

Reasons to Use Trip.com for Your Travels

Here are some reasons why booking services from Trip(dot)com is a good choice:

  • In comparison to booking the same service directly from a business, Trip deals are cheaper.
  • There are numerous options for you to compare and choose from.
  • You can book hotels and rentals abroad from the comfort of your own home.
  • From one website, you can plan your entire trip and manage your finances effectively .
  • Trip claims to offer the best deals. If the same deal is available elsewhere for less, the website claims to refund the difference.

The above reasons make Trip a top choice, but you should follow some tips to book services smartly.

Tips for Booking Services Smartly on Trip

Here are a few tips to remember when booking services on Trip(dot)com:

  • Read the reviews of other customers who have used the same service through Trip.
  • Check airline reviews outside of Trip(dot)com to determine how reliable they are. Don't be afraid to pay more for trustworthy options.
  • Don't book flights through the website in emergencies. Getting them directly from the airline will enable you to reschedule it quickly in case of a cancelation or delay.
  • Refunds can take around a week or even longer, depending on the situation. Make sure you have an extra budget in reserve to counteract that.
  • Prepare a backup plan to deal with unforeseen circumstances.
  • Give the customer support team proper details about your complaint to get it resolved promptly.
  • Only book hotels and car rentals a few days before your vacation, so you don't have to request multiple refunds if your plans change.

How to Contact Trip.com Customer Support

If you prefer to talk to customer support by phone, you can find contact information on Trip.com's help page . The details vary by region and country, so contact the appropriate number for better assistance.

The easiest method, however, is to contact Trip customer support via live chat. To connect to a representative:

  • Visit the Trip.com website .
  • Click on the headphone (Service Chat) icon in the lower-right corner.
  • You will need to sign in, so if you haven't already, do it now.
  • Choose the option you need assistance with.
  • Send any random question or query when the Trip chatbot greets you. You can say, for example, "I would like to speak with an agent."

By following these steps, you can avoid the annoying chatbot and connect with a real person.

Trip.com Alternatives

If you've had a poor experience with Trip or are concerned about the negative reviews, there are many other reliable options. The best alternative to Trip includes Booking(dot)com, Expedia, and TripAdvisor.

However, an even better option would be to use specialized services. Airbnb, for instance, can help you find affordable accommodation. Likewise, you can choose a well-known service for air tickets and rentals discounts. Despite the higher price, websites that offer dedicated travel services can assist you in better planning your journey.

Another excellent option is to use the local websites offering services in a specific country; the best local websites in the UK , for example. Besides being more trustworthy, you'll find better deals there.

Make the Most of Your Vacations

Those planning vacations can find everything they need at Trip. It does have some downsides, however. Hopefully, with some knowledge about choosing a deal on Trip(dot)com, you'll soon be one of the many happy Trip customers. And if the deals don't appeal to you, simply check out its alternatives.

What Is Trip.com?

Trip.com  is one of the most popular online travel agencies in the world. The company specializes in all kinds of reservations for travel purposes, including hotels, flights, car rentals, train tickets, and more!

screenshot of the trip.com homepage - header graphic for the "is trip.com legit" post on gigworker.com

The company is currently operated by Travel Singapore Pte. Ltd, which is a licensed entity and a part of the Trip.com Group.

Despite being a reputable name in the industry, the current format Trip.com has only been around since 2017.

This makes it a relatively new company, especially when we compare it to market giants like Booking and Trivago.

However, the company has technically been around for longer than that, as it’s a rebrand of the Chinese company Ctrip.com International, Ltd. The original company was founded in June 1999 in Shanghai, China.

In fact, according to the company’s website, the parent company has been listed under the NASDAQ stock exchange since 2003.

Besides being one of the large companies out there, Trip.com is also a parent company to many successful entities in the industry. This includes Skyscanner, Travix, Qunar, and more.

The company has partnerships with a huge variety of hotels, airlines, travel agencies, and other travel-related services all over the world.

This allows the company to offer tickets and reservations for competitive prices.

One of the main secrets behind the company’s success is its huge database. The company has a network of around 1.4 million hotels from over 200 countries and regions around the world .

It also has over 2.0 million flight routes  that connect over 5,000 destinations all over the world.

Additionally, the company has over 400 million users . To serve this huge number of customers, the company has over 45,100 employees worldwide.

Trip.com also has a mobile app available for both Android and iOS users. The app is fairly easy to use and offers all the features available on the main website.

Common Questions to Understand

If you’re interested in giving trip.com a try, you might be wondering about some aspects.

In this section, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most common questions that Trip.com users have:

One of the primary benefits of using Trip.com is its highly affordable prices. In fact, booking through Trip.com is usually a lot cheaper than booking directly.

Trip.com actually achieves that by taking advantage of two aspects, which are discounts and commissions.

As a travel agent, Trip.com earns a commission for every successful booking through the website.

However, instead of taking the whole commission for itself, the company passes some of it to the customer .

This ends up lowering the prices significantly. While this means Trip.com doesn’t earn as much per person, it relies on having so many customers to cover these losses and still turns a profit.

The other trick up their sleeves is discounts. Unlike regular customers, travel agencies get a highly discounted price  for flights and hotel accommodations.

This allows them to sell these tickets a lot cheaper than the airline or the hotel’s official prices.

Trip.com is an excellent resource for flights for many reasons. For starters, the company has a far-reaching network that connects millions of flights all over the world.

This allows you to find information on almost all commercial flights across the globe.

Not only that, but you can also learn about the ticket prices and departure/arrival times. You can use this information to both compare and book the most suitable flight ticket for you.

In addition to offering flights for much cheaper than carriers, Trip.com also offers a huge range of payment methods. This makes Trip.com both a reliable and affordable travel agent for flights.

One thing you should keep in mind here is that cancellation through Trip.com can be somewhat tricky. Yet, this is the case with any bookings made through almost any third-party agent out there.

For that reason, if you’re still unsure about the flight ticket, it’s usually best that you avoid booking it, especially if it’s an expensive one.

Is Trip.com Legit?

The short answer to this question is yes. Trip.com is a perfectly legitimate business. Whether you’re using the company’s website or mobile app, they’re both safe and easy to use.

The company also provides plenty of guarantees and reasons to establish its legitimacy as one of the most successful and popular online travel agents in the world.

While there are various reasons to find Trip.com legit, here are some of the major reasons users trust this company:

In total, Trip.com has over two decades of experience as a travel agent website.

Throughout the years, the company served hundreds of thousands of customers. This means that it established itself as one of the authority figures in the business.

Although we’re going to take a closer look at the company’s record and reviews later on, it’s fair to say that the company’s ratings are fairly positive.

Many satisfied clients shared their pleasant experiences while booking flights through the platform. These include good prices, ease of use, and much more!

Registration information is one of the main ways to establish legitimacy as an online travel agent. Trip.com publishes this data publicly, as its registration number is 201613701E.

The company also published its license number, which is 02943 under the Travel Agents Act of Singapore.

Trip.com launched its initial public offering (IPO) in April 2021 in Hong Kong. To go public, companies must submit multiple documents to various financial institutions.

These include information about the company’s assets, a clear business plan, and other guarantees of the company’s financial stability.

For that reason, many people regard a successful IPO as a testimony of legitimacy, which applies to Trip.com.

Trip.com is a highly reliable online travel agency. One of the best ways to assess a travel agency’s reliability is by the quality and quantity of services it offers.

Here are some of the reasons we find Trip.com reliable.

  • Wide Variety of Travel Services:  While some companies specialize in hotel booking or flight tickets alone, Trip.com does it all. You can use the website to browse through a wide range of items, such as flights, accommodations, train tickets, tours, and more!
  • Competitive Pricing: The main reason to use online travel agents is to get a better price for your travel ticket/accommodation, and Trip.com does that perfectly. Not only that, but you can also use features like price alerts to keep track of the items you’re interested in.
  • User-Friendly Platforms: Whether you’re browsing Trip.com through the website or through the mobile app, you’ll find no trouble booking your travel. Additionally, you can easily compare prices and find plenty of information about the items you’re looking for. This includes dates, destinations, amenities, special features, and much more!

Trip.com has a long-standing reputation for being an excellent website when it comes to safety. This includes both scam protection and cybersecurity.

For starters, the company is one of the oldest online travel agents in the world, and over the years, there wasn’t any news of major scandals about scams or foul play by the company.

The company posts and updates its legal information on the official website. The company’s terms and conditions are also fairly similar to other reputable online travel agencies.

In addition to that, the website features an SSL certificate  and other advanced features to ensure the safety of customer payments and billing information on its database.

What Are Users Saying About Trip.com?

Although Trip.com has been in business for many years, it debuted as an online booking agency in 2017. This makes it a relatively new company with a limited number of reviews and user experiences.

However, you can still find reviews of the company on multiple websites, especially TrustPilot and TripAdvisor.

Here’s a quick look at some of the aspects that they liked about the company:

As of June 2023, Trip.com has an average rating of 4.0 based on over 44,000 reviews. Here’s a quick look at what reviewers on the website liked:

  • Cheap Prices : Although users enjoyed various aspects of using Trip.com, the affordability of the tickets was the thing they liked the most, which makes it an excellent choice for anyone who wants to enjoy a trip without breaking the bank.
  • Availability and Variety:  Many users also noted that Trip.com sometimes offers tickets and hotel rooms that aren’t available on competitor websites. This makes it a perfect choice if you’re targeting accommodation at a particular hotel.
  • Ease of Use:  Another positive remark that many people left was about the user interface. Users found both the website and the app incredibly easy to use.

Reviewers on TripAdvisor share many positive experiences similar to the ones we discussed about TrustPilot. Here’s a quick look at them:

  • Booking is Easy:  The main theme here is how easy it is to book flights and trips through the website and the app. Customers and travelers also praised the affordability of the platform.
  • Up-to-Date Information: Users also liked that flight information is always up to date. This allowed them to compare prices with other platforms to pick the best options for them.

Why Are People Worried About Using Trip.com?

Despite the positive reviews, Trip.com is not perfect and has plenty of issues with its services.

In this section, we’ll take a closer look at the most recurring issues that customers reported on popular review websites.

While most trips on the website are smooth, TrustPilot users warned about some issues they encountered:

Problematic Cancellation

One of the most common issues that Trip.com users reported is cancellation issues. Most reviews mention that flights and reservations on trip.com are usually smooth.

However, if you need to cancel your flight, or there’s a delay to your flight, you may have a hard time getting your money back.

Delayed Confirmation

Another problem that the users discussed is the confirmation of hotel booking. Many customers had to wait long hours in lobbies before checking in until the confirmation arrived from Trip.com.

Negative experiences on TripAdvisor are fairly similar to the ones we discussed in TrustPilot. These mainly include:

  • Cancellation Refund Issues:  The most recurring issue is problematic cancellation and long delay before Trip.com issues a refund.
  • Reservation Conflicts: We also noticed that many customers complained about incorrect reservation details , which can cause a lot of inconvenience after long flights.

However, you should know that these issues are common among all online travel agencies, even the reputable ones.

Trip.com offers a variety of quality services and guarantees to its clients. One of the most common examples is their extensive 24/7 customer support system.

Additionally, the company promises multiple guarantees to ensure proper compensation for dissatisfied clients, these include up to 3x compensation for conflicted room reservations or no rooms on arrival

You can find out more about the guarantees that the company offers by checking Trip.com’s Customer Service Section .

Trip.com Customer Service

Trip.com has a huge network that includes hundreds of millions of users. One of the things that shows that the company takes its customer satisfaction seriously is the company’s customer support department.

You can contact the company’s  customer support  department by phone, chat, and email.

According to Trip.com, the company has 8 customer service centers around the world with teams that speak over 19 different languages!

The customer support team is available 24/7 and offers quick replies, especially if you contact them through phone or chat. However, the experience with customer service agents can be a hit or miss.

All in all, it’s fair to say that Trip.com is a legitimate website that provides a proper travel booking experience.

The company is part of a large enterprise that has been in the online booking industry for many years.

The company has its registration numbers and license numbers available on the website, which greatly improves its trustworthiness.

It also provides real services with competitive prices and plenty of great features to make the booking process easy for everyone.

With that being said, like other third-party booking websites, the company has some issues with confirmation and cancellation.

However, it’s nothing too serious and fairly similar to issues we found with the most legitimate businesses in the travel industry.

If you want to book a flight, hotel room, or train ticket, Trip.com should be a good option to consider.

Now that you know more about trip.com, here’s a closer look at some other websites that offer similar services and what others think of them:

  • Is Booking.com Legit? : Booking.com is one of the largest online travel agencies in the world. The company offers information about hotels, flights, car rentals, and other travel-related services for millions of customers.
  • Is Traveluro Legit? :  Traveluro is a company that specializes in hotel booking. Since it was recently established in 2015, many people are curious about whether its services are reliable. Check out this guide to find out more about it.
  • Is SnapTravel Legit? : Despite also being a relatively new company, SnapTravel made a name for itself as one of the best newcomers in the online hotel reservation industry.

This marks the end of today’s guide that walks you through everything you need to know about Trip.com.

As you can see, Trip.com is a well-established business that many users find legitimate and reliable. However, it’s not for everyone.

If you don’t find the Chinese-owned website reliable, you can check out any of the alternatives we have above!

Also, if you’re booking a room or a flight with a decent chance of cancellation issues, you should consider other options with better cancellation policies.

Q&A (22)

Is trip.com a scam or a legit company.

Do not book with them. If anything happens and you need to modify your booking they will not help you. They have canceled people's bookings at the last minute as well. This company is all about the money. Once they have your payment they are done with you. DO NOT book travel arrangements with them. Read the reviews and I'm speaking from experience. The price is good but if anything happens they will take your money and will not help you.

Is this a scam? the email i received after booking said my payment went through, but i won't receive my itinerary until 24hrs before the flights.

THESE PEOPLE ARE LIARS PURE AND SIMPLE. THEIR WHOLE SERVICE MODEL IS JUST BASED AROUND LIES. IT TOOK 374 MESSAGES, 167 PHONE CALLS AND FINALLY LEGAL ACTION FOR ME TO OBTAIN A REFUND AFTER AN AIRLINE CANCELLED MY FLIGHT.

Isnt there any place where complain can be launched agaist trip.com i suppose iata should be contacted for its fraudulent dealing with cistomers

Lying/cheating company. When I found out they were based in China, that explained everything. Stay away!

Anyone booked train tickets with trip.com? i'm worried after seeing the reviews

Hi Nia R. Thank you for considering Trip.com for your travel needs. We have been able to offer customers wonderful trips with trustworthy service for over five years. Your satisfaction is our top priority. We look forward to your next trip with us. Thank you.

Similarly if we check out Trip.com on either the Google Play or Apple App Store we find that the mobile app scores fairly highly, with a score of between 4.4 and 4.8 depending on which country you are browsing from. In addition, on Google Play alone we can see that the app has had over 10 million downloads. You can read the reviews for yourself, but we can easily tell from the high overall score that the app is legitimate.

Trip.com App Store Scores

When it comes to their website we can see that it uses HTTPS for secure browsing. While this is common place amongst almost all travel sites these days it’s good to see Trip.com is living up to the standard.

How else can we see that they are indeed legitimate? First of we can check their company LinkedIn profile, both for Trip.com (the brand) and Trip.com Group. The first thing you’ll notice is that they have a significant amount of jobs advertised for various roles in various countries around the world. And if we look at what they are posting we can see videos and interviews with their staff and offices, as well as commercial deals they are signing and industry events that they are attending. At the time of writing they’ve just signed a deal with Amazon Web Services to build a joint innovation lab, signed an MOU with Tourism Fiji, and detail what initiatives their staff are taking part in in terms of environmentally sustainable development.

Trip.com LinkedIn Profile

To establish whether or not Trip.com is legit we should also look at their industry connections. When we look at their promotions we can quickly gather this information. From just looking at their various homepages in different countries we can see that they have many cooperations with local and international tourism boards, reputable banks, global payment processors like Visa and MasterCard as well as a huge amount of airlines and hotel chains. If you’ve taken a look at their LinkedIn page this will come as no surprise as they are always advertising for business development (BD) roles.

What Does Making A Booking on Trip.com Look Like?

As already mentioned, we’ve made numerous bookings on Trip.com over the years. Here’s what will happen after you have made a flight or hotel booking.

Flight Bookings

  • Confirm your selection, and make payment.
  • After payment you’ll receive an email letting you know that Trip.com has received your booking. (Another feature of Trip.com is that at this point you’ll probably get taken to a page which unlocks a whole lot of cheaper hotel rooms as a reward for booking a flight).
  • Once the flight has been ticketed you’ll get another email with the flight PNR and/or ticket number. Sometimes the ticketing is instant and you’ll get this basically at the same time as the confirmation email, while other times it will take a few hours depending on the airline.
  • If you need to check your booking details you can do this via the website or mobile app from the “My Bookings” menu. Once you’re in there you can get your PNR/ticket numbers, contact customer service, as well as seat selection and check-in on some airlines only. If these aren’t supported for your particular airline just grab the PNR number and do it on the airline’s own website.
  • In the “My Bookings” section you can also change and cancel your flight, if you’ve booked a flight which allows this. There’s no need to talk to a customer service representative on the phone, you can do it all yourself, although I’m sure this is also an option if you really want.
  • Attached to one of the emails, you’ll get a PDF receipt attached. You can also get this issued again (including with a company name on it) from the booking details page at any time.

Hotel Bookings

  • Once your payment has been made you’ll get an email letting you know that Trip.com has received your booking. They’ll probably try to cross-sell you some things right now such as airport pickups, car rentals and attraction tickets.
  • Once the hotel has confirmed your booking you’ll get another email letting you know your booking is confirmed. For most hotels the booking is “Instant confirmation” however for some properties Trip.com might need to contact the property so it will take a little bit longer to get the confirmation.
  • From either their mobile app or the website you can cancel or change you booking, assuming that you booked a room which allows this. There’s also often a method to chat to the hotel directly, or at the minimum a phone number. Of course you can also contact their customer service through here. Hint: Even if your booking is non-cancellable, Trip.com may be able to get it cancelled for free if you ask really nicely.
  • As with flights, you’ll get a receipt attached to one of the emails in PDF form. You can, at any time, visit the booking details page on the mobile app or website and get another one issued in your own name or company name.

How can I protect myself when booking with Trip.com? If you still don’t trust them, you could try making a hotel booking which comes with free cancellation. Once the booking is confirmed you can double check by calling the hotel directly to see if they have received your order. Besides flights and hotels, what else does Trip.com offer? Trip.com is a full service online travel agency, much like Expedia, although it offers an even greater number of products. Besides flights and hotels, it also offers a flight + hotel service where you can book both products in one transaction to get a discount – we haven’t tested this product yet. Trip.com also offers car rentals, airport transfers, attraction tickets and tours, train tickets for Europe, China, Korea and select other countries, gift cards and a comprehensive travel guide. In certain markets they also offer cruises. If Trip.com is so big, why haven’t I heard of them? Probably because you’re living in the wrong country. While Trip.com’s largest markets have been in Asia over the last decade, it appears to be making bigger and bigger pushes into North America and Europe. If you haven’t seen them advertising yet, you probably will soon.

In Summary: Is Trip.com Legit? Trip.com is as legitimate as any other online travel agency. The fact that it’s such a huge company, had been around for so long, and has relatively positive reviews when compared to its competitors shows that it’s still going to be around tomorrow. More importantly, here at 9travel we’ve used Trip.com several times, for both flights and hotels, and never encountered any problems. We’ve also booked some of their minor product lines like car rentals, airport transfers and attraction tickets, and to date have always had a smooth experience.

Thanks

I had some suspicions about using the…

Hi Stanly Saji, Thank you for your feedback regarding the ticket issuance timeframe. We understand that it can be challenging when there is a requirement to issue tickets within one day.

Date of experience : 02 May 2024

Trip.com Review - Has Anything Changed in 2024?

Trip.com Review - Has Anything Changed in 2024?

If you're looking for budgeted discounts as a traveler, trip.com might just be the best fit for you when it comes to discounted accommodations. From a wide selection of travel-based packages, this review will help you decide whether you can score epic deals on your next adventure.

trip.com legit

If you're scavenging the internet in a travel planning frenzy, you probably feel overwhelmed by what's being offered. There are so many ads, so many websites, and so many options!

Where is one of the only places I browse? Trip.com. This good oldie can help you piece together an epic holiday—it sure has in the past for me.

Top-notch destinations, tedious transportation, and many accommodations are just a few things you must choose between when planning a trip. Sorting through all those travel-related details can feel exhausting, and it can take a lot of work to get everything right.

That's where platforms like Trip.com come in. Coined as a convenient, all-in-one travel platform, you expect to have an easy time planning.

But how can you be sure you're getting the best deals? And do you know if it's even reliable? Is it better than travel deal sites like Priceline , Fareportal , and Momondo ?

Whether you're hunting down a budget-friendly vacation or a month-long backpacking trip, let's find out whether Trip.com should be the go-to platform that'll help you figure out all your trip plans...

Trip.com Logo

What Is Trip.com?

Trip.com offers many travel-related booking services like flights, accommodation, and transport options. It also covers all-in-one packages and deals on attractions and activities for a convenient experience.

With everything all in one place, the platform makes things easy by narrowing down your search time.

Operating all over the globe, including over 200 countries and regions, you can find something tailored to your travel style in the destination you're looking for.

Trip.com boasts 24/7 support, advice, and assistance for any travel-related concerns.

And with a relatively easy-to-use setup, this travel platform is a popular option among the competition. What sets Trip.com apart? Many people say it's the deals and promotions, especially on hotels and flights.

How Did Trip.com Start?

Gone are the days of flipping through the pages of travel books, calling flight companies, and scavenging your purse for your tickets.

Nowadays, platforms like Trip.com make travel planning hassle-free. But who even started it?

Trip.com sprung out from Ctrip Group's urge to provide the global travel community with solutions. Founded in 1999 in Shanghai, China, it's since become a leading travel booking website.

This convenient platform allows customers to enjoy booking and planning services in one spot.

Ctrip Logo

How Does Trip.com Work?

Trip.com's simple layout allows travel enthusiasts to search, compare, and book their desired vacation. You can find bargains on tours, tickets, rental cars, trains, flights, hotels, and packages.

Here's how it works:

  • Search – Take a look at the various options you have. Simply enter a destination, then select your travel dates. After finding what works for you, research flights, activities, and accommodations.
  • Compare – Weigh up the list of options. Don't forget to consider prices, amenities, and other information that could affect your trip.
  • Book – Once you've got the details set in stone, it's time to click confirm! Enter your personal information and payment details at the checkout, and you've booked! After that, check your emails for your flight itinerary, hotel information, or other trip details.
  • Customer support – Don't be afraid to ask for help if you have any doubts. With 24/7 access, you can rely on the customer support team for anything.

Trip.com Booking Page

Does Trip.Com Have a Mobile App?

Yes, Trip.com has a very easy-to-use mobile app. I was using Trip.com when it was still Ctrip, and even back then, the app was super helpful.

I'm someone who doesn't like to do a lot of important tasks on their mobile—I like to feel and look at having all the info on a large desktop screen. That being said, I've booked through the Trip.com app and haven't had any issues.

Why Is Trip.com So Cheap?

Now that you've scanned this popular travel platform, you're probably wondering why the prices are so affordable. Compared to other travel booking websites, the prices don't make sense.

So, why won't Trip.com put a dent in your wallet? Let's find out:

  • Trip.com is part of a massive online travel agency, Ctrip Group, which allows them to score much lower prices. This means it can get customers better discounts on airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc.
  • The competitive prices can change in real time, according to supply and demand. Known as dynamic pricing, Trip.com offers travel services that adapt to the current market.
  • Thanks to its 20 years in business, Trip.com has managed to form partnerships with airlines, hotels, and other services. This platform can offer exclusive discounts and special deals to its customers. The deals are something that makes it stand out to budget travelers and backpackers.

Is Trip.com Reliable?

So now you know how it works, but is Trip.com legit? Having been in the travel industry for over 2 decades, this travel platform has built up a decent reputation.

With 24/7 customer support, people tend to rave about the convenience of having a solution just a phone call away.

Plus, as it's part of the Ctrip Group, Trip.com is included as one of the biggest online travel agencies. This association ups its credibility and reliability, resulting in higher reviews as a secure booking platform.

Whether it's your first time traveling or you're a newcomer to budget trips, you can get peace of mind knowing that you haven't been ripped off.

Trip.com even uses encryption technology to keep people's information safe and protected. Thanks to these modern services, you don't have to worry about your sensitive information or payment details being leaked.

Trip.com Mobile Application

Cancellation Policy of Trip.com

Trip.com's cancellation policy can vary greatly depending on what you're looking for. There are some flight deals or hotel bookings that you can get free cancellation policy with. That being said, it varies greatly.

I've broken it down into the 3 main booking types and what you can expect if you need to cancel your plans.

  • Flights : When it comes down to flights, some airlines may charge a cancellation fee. In fact, some airlines may even charge up to 100% of the ticket price. So, make sure you review the fine print before booking!
  • Hotels : Depending on the hotel, the cancellation policy can vary significantly. Like flights, some hotels can even take up to 100% of the total price, so don't book without reading the details.
  • Rental cars : In most cases, there's no extra fee for cancellation. The only catch is the time period. Be sure to check out the specific cancellation details for each provider.

The Good and the Bad of Trip.com

  • Comprehensive Services: Trip.com is one of the most comprehensive travel booking sites. From flight tickets and hotel stays to vacation packages and car rentals, you can seamlessly book various travel services. Plus, it often offers a better price compared to similar competitors.
  • User-Friendly Interface: The platform's intuitive design ensures even the most tech-averse users can easily navigate the site, making the booking process simple and straightforward.
  • Round-the-Clock Support: Travel mishaps don't stick to a 9-5 schedule, nor does Trip.com. Its 24/7 customer support means you're never alone, even during those unexpected mid-journey hiccups.
  • Limited Personalization: While Trip.com provides a broad array of options, the depth of personalization sometimes leaves something to be desired. Depending on your travel dates and preferences, you might not always find the travel experience you're hoping for.
  • Availability Issues: Because of how popular the booking system Trip.com is, there are instances when desired accommodations or flights might be booked out.
  • Hidden Costs: The allure of a great deal can sometimes be overshadowed by additional fees. Charges for baggage, service, or other add-ons may not be immediately visible during the booking process, which can result in unexpected costs down the line.

Trip.com Rewards Program

You heard that right... Trip.com has a rewards program. This loyalty program is similar to Expedia's rewards, another considerable competitor in the market.

Calling all new users to Trip.com! If you're looking for more ways to save money while using Trip.com, signing up for the free rewards program is the way. And, depending on how much you book through Trip.com, you can benefit more!

The rewards program has 4 tiers: Silver, gold, platinum, and diamond members. You'll get access to more benefits as you move up in the tiers. And once you sign up, no matter your tier, you'll start earning "Trip Coins" that you can spend like money.

I've attached a screenshot from Trip.com's website that'll give you a better idea of the perks of each tier...

What Are Others Saying?

There are a lot of mixed reviews online. Some are overwhelmingly positive, while some customer reviews are so angry they want to give a 0-star rating. Let's break down the main points people are talking about online.

Many of the people who've left positive feedback talk about receiving acceptable resolutions to problems after speaking with Trip.com's customer service. Other customers say the website is easy to navigate, making the overall experience less stressful!

In contrast, the customers who wrote 1-star reviews contradict the positive reviews about terrible customer service experiences. Others complain about an inconvenience they experienced while on vacation where Trip.com did not help them with a good resolution.

My Personal Experience

I'm giving Trip.com a pretty decent rating—see below. But why? Well, I used it very often while living in China and traveling around Asia. I had minimal issues with it.

As I mentioned above, I really enjoyed my experience using the phone app. It made mobile bookings easy, and I found all my tickets without hassle.

I've booked several types of reservations with Trip.com, including cheap flights between Asian countries, train tickets between mainland Chinese cities, and discount hotels in a couple of Asian cities.

I did run into some hiccups with my bookings but I had an okay time with customer service. Yes, sometimes it was frustrating because the worker's English wasn't stellar, but they got me what I needed. Whether it was a refund or changing my flight tickets for a fee, I could do it by calling its 24/7 customer support line!

That said, I don't use it as often when traveling around North America or Europe!

Is Trip.com Worth It?

I think Trip.com's offerings are valuable enough for most travelers, whether for budget travel or a business trip, that you should browse the site whenever you're trying to plan your upcoming trip.

If you're seeking the convenience of having everything in one travel-related platform, then Trip.com is an excellent option. You can easily compare prices and then book flights, accommodation, tours, and transport in one spot.

Whether you're trying to compare pricing and options ahead of time or you're booking a last-minute trip, Trip.com is definitely one of the online travel agencies that you should look into.

Since Trip.com provides discounted prices on travel services, it's a fantastic option for budget travelers and backpackers. Even if you don't end up booking through Trip.com, you can feel good about your purchase knowing you've checked a variety of reliable travel booking sites.

On the other hand, who should skip out on using Trip.com? If you're looking for a personalized trip with specific details, you might not find what you're looking for.

My only words of caution are to make sure that you start searching early to avoid availability issues and check the details for any additional fees!

My Rating: 3.9/5

  • Budget-friendly, competitive prices
  • Easy-to-use
  • Wide variety of services
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Encryption technology
  • Restricted personalization
  • Varied customer support quality
  • Limited availability on dates, deals, tours, etc.
  • Extra costs and fees

Is Trip.com Legit? (Beware Before Booking)

Last Updated: November 21, 2023

is trip.com legitimate

Trip.com generally offers cheaper rates than booking directly with a hotel, airline, or car rental company.

As a result, the following questions surely arise in the mind of a first-time user:

  • Is Trip.com legit, reliable, and safe?
  • Why is Trip.com cheaper than booking direct?
  • Should I book through Trip.com?

So if you’re also looking for the answer to these questions, this article is for you.

Let’s begin straight away.

Is Trip.com Legit?

Should you book through trip.com or directly, 8 tips to book safely on trip.com, why trip.com is cheaper than booking directly.

Trip.com is legit as it is owned by Trip Group, the world’s leading online travel company. However, booking through Trip.com carries greater risks of issues than booking directly since it acts as an intermediary between the customer and the travel provider.

Trip.com

Though problems can happen with booking directly as well, the chances are much lower compared to booking through Trip.com.

Why are the risks associated with Trip.com high?

Well, it is due to the involvement of a third party (Trip.com).

Let me explain!

Basically, Trip.com solely acts as an intermediary between the traveler (you) and the hotel, airline, car rental companies, and other travel services.

How Does Trip.com Work

As a middleman, Trip.com collects the payment and is responsible for your booking.

Since your contract is not directly with the hotel, car rental, or airline company you booked with, they are not responsible for your booking, and don’t expect any direct help from them.

In case of any issues between you and the travel provider , you will have to involve Trip.com, and then they will reach out to its partner travel provider on your behalf to resolve the matter.

But the problem is:

There is a lack of customer support on Trip.com.

It is not just Trip.com where customer service can be lacking; online travel agencies (OTAs) generally skimp on customer service to keep their costs down and offer you cheap bookings.

The lack of customer support is one of the reasons why Trip.com and other OTAs are able to offer cheaper rates than direct bookings.

Therefore, if you’ve booked through Trip.com then there is a good chance you are going to be stuck in a lot of back and forth between you, the host, and Trip.com before your issue is finally resolved.

How Trip.com Works

However, there are possibilities that your issue might not be resolved either, especially if it is urgent due to the lack of customer service.

Similarly, when you are booked through Trip.com then it becomes complicated to make changes or cancellations to your bookings, especially in the case of flight reservations.

While you may be able to easily make changes or cancellations to other travel services, doing so for a flight reservation is very challenging.

In fact, it is almost impossible to cancel or change flights booked through Trip.com.

The reason is that even if you booked directly with the airline, making changes, especially cancellations to your flight, is challenging.

And if you booked flights through Trip.com, things are going to be more complicated because of the third party involvement.

Having a middleman can complicate any mishaps because airlines will tell you to coordinate any issues through Trip.com rather than offering you direct assistance.

And Trip.com may then turn around and push things back to the airline, leaving you stuck in the middle.

Trip.com Middleman

On the other hand , it is far more convenient to make amendments, cancellations, or resolve other issues when you book directly since there are no intermediaries involved.

Additionally, the travel provider (hotels, airlines, car rental, etc.) gives high priority to customers who booked directly with them rather than those who booked through Trip.com.

The reason is simple:

They make more profits from direct sales over those made through Trip.com since they won’t have to pay any fees.

Aside from that, it is much easier for them to manage the customers who booked directly rather than those who booked through online travel agencies like Trip.com , Booking.com , Agoda , Expedia , Kiwi.com , Super Travel , etc.

One example of it is that the hotels may not receive your booking confirmation from Trip.com , resulting in overbooking for the same room.

Because of this, there have been many instances where a guest has been stranded in a strange city without any room availability in the hotel, despite making an advance booking with them through Trip.com.

Direct bookings, on the other hand, do not have any risks of missing your booking confirmation since there are no third parties involved (Trip.com).

In a nutshell:

Trip.com works out just fine until something goes wrong.

The major advantage of booking anything through Trip.com is that they usually offer cheaper prices than booking directly.

But if things go wrong, it gets complicated to make cancellations, changes, or resolve any other issues when you’re booked through them because of the involvement of an intermediary (Trip.com).

Having said that, let’s conclude: Is Trip.com legit?

Even though booking through Trip.com carries a higher risk of issues than booking directly, it is indeed a legitimate platform.

Trip.com’s legitimacy cannot be questioned because it is owned and operated by one of the largest online travel companies in the world, Trip.com Group (formerly Ctrip.com), who also owns Skyscanner , Ctrip , and Qunar .

Trip.com Group has been in business since 1999 , listed on NASDAQ , and has over 45,100 employees and over 400 million members, making it one of the world’s leading online travel agencies.

If Trip.com were a scam company, it probably would not be a part of the Trip.com Group.

Considering these facts, one can easily judge whether or not Trip.com is legitimate.

There is almost never a reason to book through Trip.com if the price difference is the same or slightly cheaper.

However, if the price difference between booking through Trip.com and directly is significant then it mostly comes down to personal comfort.

Personally, I highly recommend you to AVOID booking flights through Trip.com

As you know, the process of making changes, cancellations, or resolving other issues becomes more complicated if you’ve booked flights through Trip.com.

Contrary to this, dealing directly with the airline is much more convenient in case of changes, cancellations, or any other problems.

I always recommend booking flights directly even though the price difference is significant.

Additionally, I do not recommend Trip.com for booking rental cars, taxis, and other travel services except hotels.

I only recommend Trip.com for booking hotels but only under the following conditions:

  • The price difference is significant between booking directly and through Trip.com.
  • Booking an average hotel, not an expensive luxury hotel.
  • Not making reservations for a large number of days at once.

Apart from these conditions, you must be aware of these:

Before you book anything, here are the eight tips you need to know to minimize the risks associated with booking through Trip.com:

1. Choose a Safe Destination For Your Stay

Before you book, thoroughly research the travel destination you’re considering for your stay to be aware of common scams, political issues, and other safety concerns.

Look for an area that appears safe and friendly.

I highly recommend you to always book your stay in urban areas, where there are plenty of people and access to basic facilities in case you need any help.

2. Check The Photos of The Hotel & Its Rooms

Prior to booking any accommodation, check multiple photos of it provided in the listing.

Trip.com Hotel Photos

If the property seems good to you, then make sure to check the photos of the room you’re considering booking.

Note: The hotel presents its best side to you in the photos. To get a realistic picture of a hotel and its rooms, you need to:

3. Read Guest Reviews

Be sure to read guest reviews thoroughly before booking your accommodation to know what other guests have said about the property.

It is recommended to choose your accommodation with a minimum of 70+ reviews and a star rating of at least 4 out of 5 and also check the photos uploaded by other guests in the reviews.

By checking the reviews, you can get plenty of behind-the-scenes insights into what the accommodation is like and what to expect from it before making your reservation.

In case you’re wondering:

Are the reviews on the properties listed on Trip.com real?

Absolutely, since the reviews can only be submitted by people who have genuinely stayed with the property before.

Booking.com Reviews Real

4. Be Aware of Policies

Oftentimes, guests overlook the policies when booking which results in unsuccessful cancellations and refunds later on.

To avoid such issues, be aware of the room cancellations and refund policies before booking.

Trip.com Room Policies

In addition, make sure to read the property policies as well.

Similarly, carefully read the policies of other travel services (flights, cars, taxis, etc.) when booking through Trip.com.

However, I do not recommend booking anything through Trip.com except hotels.

5. Check Your Hotel & Room Amenities

Before making the reservation, make sure the hotel you’re considering has the amenities you need.

Most importantly, you should also check if the room has the amenities you require.

Following the tips above, you’re ready to book your accommodation.

When booking, however, you must:

6. Make Sure The Booking Details Are Correct

Providing incorrect details can cause problems, especially in the case of flight reservations since making changes to flights booked through Trip.com is almost impossible.

To avoid any problems, make sure the booking details are correct when booking anything through Trip.com.

7. Confirm Your Booking

As you know, one of the major risks associated with booking a hotel through Trip.com is that the hotel you’re booked with might not receive your booking confirmation from Trip.com.

This could result in no room availability when you arrive at the property.

To avoid such problems, you must confirm your booking from the hotel as soon as you book and before arriving at the property.

With that being said, the final tip for you is to:

8. Print Out Your Itineraries

Upon successful booking, Trip.com will send you a confirmation email outlining the details of your stay, what’s included in your package, cancellation and refund policies, and other important information.

Trip.com Booking Confirmation

While you can present an electronic copy of your booking confirmation at check-in, it is preferable to print out your itineraries before you begin your vacation to avoid any problems.

There you have it!

By following these eight tips, you are less likely to run into any problems when booking through Trip.com.

Trip.com is able to offer cheaper prices than booking directly because of these two primary business models they employ:

  • Merchant Model
  • Agency Model

1. Merchant Model

Trip.com uses the merchant model to buy hotel rooms or another type of booking in advance and in bulk to get discounts and then turns around and sells them to you and me over time at a higher price, passing some of its commission on to us.

Confused? Consider this example:

Trip.com uses its purchasing power to buy rooms in bulk and in advance to get a discount rate from the hotel.

For instance, Trip.com books a block of 50 rooms from a hotel for $100 per night while the current market rate sits at around $150 per night.

why trip.com is cheaper

Over time, Trip.com resells those rooms at a higher price but not than the current market rate by the hotel.

  • Trip.com gradually resells those 50 rooms for $130 per night.
  • Trip.com profits $30 if one customer books a room through them.
  • The customer (you) is still able to purchase below the current market rate by the hotel which can’t be lower than $150 since Trip.com already reserved those rooms.

By selling these rooms at a higher price than they purchased them for, Trip.com made a profit but also presented savings to us over the current market rate.

Trip.com also employs the merchant model with airline tickets, cars, and other travel services and then combines the different bookings to offer an attractive vacation package with built-in savings over booking the components independently.

So that’s one of the major reasons why Trip.com is able to offer cheaper prices to us than booking directly.

Another reason how they are able to offer cheaper rates is because of:

2. Agency Model

In the agency model, Trip.com acts as a salesperson and facilitates a booking between the customer and the hotel, airline, car rental company, and other travel services it provides.

To help them sell their bookings, Trip.com gets a commission in exchange.

Basically, Trip.com allows anyone to list on their platform for free and charges a percentage of commission (varies between 10% to 20%) from them once a sale is made through their platform.

Since the travel providers (hotels, airlines, taxis, etc.) pay a commission to Trip.com when a traveler books through them, Trip.com, in turn, may pass some of that commission on to consumers.

Thus, Trip.com is able to offer you cheaper rates than booking directly.

As far as the legitimacy of Trip.com is concerned, it is certainly a legitimate online travel agency.

However, if something goes wrong when you’re booked through Trip.com, resolving your issues and making changes or cancellations can be challenging.

Although issues can arise even if you are booked directly, the chances are lower and it is much easier to resolve your problems since there are no third parties involved (Trip.com)

On the plus side, Trip.com typically offers cheaper rates than direct bookings with the hotel, airline, and other travel services.

To wrap up, here are my two cents:

Avoid booking everything, especially flights, through Trip.com except hotels or other types of accommodation but only under these conditions:

  • The price difference is significant.
  • You’re not booking an expensive luxury hotel.

In addition, you must be aware of the safety tips shared above before you book your stay.

Hopefully, all of your concerns are cleared up regarding Trip.com’s legitimacy, reliability, and safety.

If you’ve any questions or want to share your personal experience, please feel free to comment below.

is trip.com legit?

Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)

If you’re searching for flights through popular flight search sites such as Skyscanner, you’ll have probably come across trip.com.  Flights listed on their site are often significantly cheaper, sometimes even 50% cheaper than those listed in other places. The temptation to grab these tantalisingly cheap deals is understandable, but, if Internet searches are anything to go by, many budget travellers are asking themselves whether trip.com is legit, trustworthy, reliable or safe to book with . Having had an absolutely terrible experience with this company in July 2022, I’m here to answer your questions with some hard truths, and hopefully save you a lot of hassle, money and heartache.

TLDR: Never book anything with trip.com. They are absolutely the worst travel company I’ve ever dealt with.

Here’s a little bit about what happened to me. If you’re asking yourself is trip.com legit or safe and just looking for straight answers to your questions, feel free to skip my horror story and just read the rest, though I assure you that you will be thinking twice about booking with them once you hear what happened to me (and others!).

I booked a return flight on trip.com, as I was due to go to an important family event in California. The day before my flight was due to leave the UK, I received an email from trip.com saying my flight was cancelled by the airline . When trying to rebook travel through their website, I was told there were no available flights, although there were plenty of flights still going (including on their own site). UK / EU law states that if your flight is cancelled by the airline you have a right of being rerouted to your destination by any means necessary, or alternatively receive a refund. As I was supposed to go to a specific event, I wished to be rerouted.

I then found out that trip.com, even though they have a UK phone number, are actually a Chinese company . Dealing with their Chinese call centre was terrible – agents with poor English repeatedly giving me contradictory information about whether or not I was being booked on a flight, then insisting there were no flights available. They didn’t care at all that I  was going to an important event . When I asked to speak to a manager, they always said one wasn’t available, and if I insisted and refused to get off the phone, they’d get another agent, which I’m pretty sure was only pretending to be the manager, seeing as they had no additional authority or knowledge (but hey, at least they didn’t just change their voice and pretend to be the manager, like what happened to this lady when she tried to speak to one!). I was told I was being put on another flight, then when I woke up at 4am to go to the airport, had an email saying the airline rejected the request.

After spending several days trying to sort this out, I was eventually told there were no flights and forced to take a refund or lose my money . This refund would apparently come in “up to 14 working days” because of the airline. To cut a long (and horrible) story short, I missed out on the event I’d been looking forward to for many months, because they would not put me on another flight. I was left with no ticket and a vague promise of a refund that may or may not come.

Having left them one star reviews everywhere I could ( here and here , for example)  they offered to “expedite” my refund request so that it takes up to 7 working days (how? I thought the airline made that impossible? Hmm) and offered me $50 in site credit as compensation, which is absolutely insulting considering they ruined my trip with their incredibly poor customer service . They keep insisting it’s not their responsibility to reroute me if the flight is cancelled and seem to think I should be grateful that I am even getting a refund.

As of today, I am not even sure the refund is really coming, as I only have their word that it’s on its way.

As far as I am concerned, booking through them does not negate my legal rights, which, since the flight was due to leave from a UK airport, mean I have the right to be rerouted by any means necessary to get to my destination in time. Having booked through them, I couldn’t go directly through the airline, so it’s up to them to ensure my legal rights are upheld. I believe they broke the law by refusing to reroute me when I repeatedly and clearly stated that was what I wanted.

But regardless of whether they broke the law when they refused to reroute me or were unable to do so because of constraints placed on them by the airline (which is what they are claiming), the bottom line is that I booked through them and was therefore denied my legal rights . Reading the many many bad reviews they have on sites like Trustpilot  , Sitejabber , and others, it seems like I am far from alone. At least I wasn’t stranded abroad because of their screw up like this person , or had my flight changed to another country without my consent like this one ! Still, my summer plans have been absolutely ruined because of their awful customer service .

I should also note that Trip.com have also repeatedly ignored a subject access request from me. This is a legal requirement in the UK that states they have to provide me with the personal information they have on me if I request it. This includes recordings of any calls made to the customer service centre, including the one where I repeatedly said I did not want to cancel my flight and wanted to be rerouted.

( UPDATE: 8 days, several calls and dozens of emails later, I was finally provided with the details on how to get my information out of them as per my subject access request. This happened after I emailed Skyscanner’s CEO , which got this handled by Skyscanner’s customer service manager. After emailing their data compliance people I was told I’d get an answer within one working day . It’s now been almost two weeks and I’ve heard nothing back . Meanwhile I was being offered more compensation, but still not what I asked for, which is the equivalent of a flight to my original destination. trip.com then basically disappeared and stopped answering my emails , even though I’ve asked for an official response if the insufficient offer of compensation they’d made is their final offer.)

Eventually, after chasing Skyscanner again, I got a reply and some compensation. It basically took me over a month of constant hassling and going on a bad PR rampage to get it, and it was still less than what I thought was fair.

After my terrible experience and the resulting research I did, I am now able to answer some of the most common questions about trip.com,  including things like “Is trip.com legit?”, “Is trip.com safe to book with?” and all those other questions that show people are not quick to trust this company. So…

Is trip.com legit?

The answer to this depends on what you mean by “legit”. trip.com is a real company, though in practice they may as well be a scam . The experience myself and many others have had with them often ends up being out of pocket, with no flights , wasting whole days trying to get anywhere with their agents, having to spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars or pounds to get to your destination, being stranded or having to give up on your holiday.

Is trip.com legit for flights?

Absolutely not. If your flight gets delayed, cancelled or is otherwise affected by the sort of issues that are now happening all the time you may well lose your money and not have a ticket . Trip.com may refuse to refund you the money or hold onto it for months or even years.

Is trip.com legit for hotels?

I’ve never booked a hotel through them (and never will), but reading people’s reviews, it seems they are just as bad for hotels as they are for flights . They often forget to notify the hotel of reservations , leaving people stranded and their site doesn’t update when hotels are closed down or are full, meaning people can turn up in the middle of the night with nowhere to stay. If you book with trip.com you are gambling away your money and potentially also your safety .

Is trip.com trustworthy?

In my opinion: absolutely not . Trip.com is based in China. Nothing inherently bad about that, but they do seem to have very poor customer service standards and don’t always understand or uphold the law in the countries they serve.

Paying trip.com and getting a confirmation from them   doesn’t mean you will fly . Sometimes they fail to pass your payment to the airline , meaning you don’t actually have a ticket. Check out this review for one of many examples .

If anything goes wrong with your booking (which is likely in this climate of delays, cancellations, strikes and other travel disasters), you will not be looked after by trip.com . They plaster their website full of “guarantees” and talk about “peace of mind”, but these are just for show.

For example, the first time I tried to book a flight through them, they sold me a “price freeze” for £9 to lock the price of the flight for 12 hours . After just two hours I got an email saying there were “no more flights at that price” . So what did I just pay for? Thankfully I got a refund for the fake price freeze, but in hindsight that should have been a red flag not to believe anything they say. Here’s another person this happened to , making me think this is not a freak incident!

Others have been less fortunate. Take this guy , for example, who paid for a refund guarantee , only to discover he’s wasted his money when he actually needed the refund. This is just one of many bad reviews people in similar situations have left trip.com

Trip.com agents are trained to get you off the phone no matter what . I was repeatedly told things were going to happen and I would get an email about it, but then either an email never came, or I got one saying the exact opposite.

Is trip.com safe?

It is absolutely not safe to book with trip.com. They are not members of any trade associations (at least in western countries like UK, USA, CA and EU countries), they are not ATOL protected . If anything goes wrong, you have nothing to protect you from the consequences. And things do go wrong all the time. Their agents make a lot of mistakes and won’t rectify them , or at least not in time for you to catch your flight. They hold onto your refund from the airline for weeks or even months if you are issued one . They make changes to flights without telling you and won’t refund the money if you can no longer travel as a result. And worst of all, sometimes they tell you they’ve issued your tickets, but don’t confirm with the airline , so you never get to travel at all!

Who are trip.com?

Trip.com, formerly Ctrip, are a big Chinese travel company . Trip.com group now own a lot of travel websites, including budgetair, cheaptickets and others , some of these are owned through a company called Travix, which trip.com also owns. Most importantly, they also own Skyscanner , which in my opinion is one of the reasons why it’s no longer a trustworthy site. Skyscanner pushes trip.com and their properties all the time, giving them prominent placement and creating a false sense of security for visitors. I only booked with trip.com because I found them on Skyscanner and thought they were a trustworthy company. Don’t make the same mistake I (and many others) did. Avoid booking with trip.com.

How can you contact trip.com?

If you’re trying to contact trip.com then perhaps you are already having a problem with them, in which case, I’m sorry. If you google “trip.com contact number” followed by your country, you should be able to find their contact number. However, in my experience, going through to an agent on the phone is no better than using their online chat. In fact, the online chat might give their agent the opportunity to cut and paste stuff into their translation software so they might understand you better. In my experience, there is no advantage to trying to use your voice to elicit any kind of response from them. Save yourself the hassle and use the chat service. You’ll get nowhere, but at least you can say you tried before getting to the next stage I will detail below.

How can you get through to a real person on trip.com’s annoying chat feature?

Trip.com’s chat (you can access it through their customer support page ) is designed to get rid of you rather than help you . As such, it will keep throwing crappy, useless answers at you rather than giving you the option to speak to an agent. To get to an agent, pick the relevant topic from their list, which should give you a bunch of questions and answers. Pick a random question to get the answer. If there’s no option to “consult an agent” at the end of that, click the “give feedback” at the bottom left. Make sure you click the “terrible” option to let trip.com know what you think of their crappy chatbot. As part of their automatic apology for their failure to provide a decent service, they’ll provide you with the option to speak to an agent. Click that and you will (eventually) be connected to someone in their Chinese call centre. Don’t expect any actual help, though!

How can you get through to a manager on trip.com?

To get someone actually dealing with you as a person, you’ll need to think outside of the box. Once you’ve tried dealing with their incompetent agents and gotten nowhere (and only then, sadly, because you have to give them a chance to do their job, even though they will ultimately fail), you can start making some noise on social media. The easiest way to get their attention is to give them a one star review on sites like Trustpilot or Sitejabber .  If you’ve downloaded their crappy app, you can also give them a one star review in the Apple or Android store, though the character limit is annoying and it’s harder for them to get in touch with you on there (still fun, though). Now sit back and watch the fake caring reply appear in all its poor Google Translated glory. Do not be fooled. Trip.com doesn’t care. But if you’ve provided your booking reference, you will hopefully get an email from (supposedly) a “customer success manager” you can deal with. Make sure you give them details of your booking or they won’t be able to contact you.

If you have a Twitter account, you can also tweet trip.com on there with your complaint. They will ask you to message them your details for them to contact you.

Personally, I prefer Trustpilot and Sitejabber, because they will let you edit your review as many times as you want. I edited my review repeatedly to keep up with the developing situation and to refute their various lies.

Sadly, none of this helped me fly to my destination in time or receive adequate compensation, but it seems to have worked for some people looking for refunds, as some reviewers have changed their one star reviews to reflect the fact that trip.com have provided a refund / compensation. Maybe it will work for you.

In my experience, these are the things they respond to. For myself, I googled “trip.com reviews” and have been going through and adding mine everywhere, including on reddit threads. It might not make a difference to what happens in my case, but it sure as hell might save others from going through the same shit I did.

What other things can you try if you’re getting nowhere with trip.com?

If you’re not getting anywhere with them, you might also want to leave some bad reviews for Skyscanner (that is, if you found the trip.com flight through them). Their customer service agents are marginally better, plus the company itself is based in the UK. They will contact trip.com for you to ask them to look into issues, though there’s no guarantee anything will come out of it .

Many people seem to have had good results with doing a chargeback through the credit card . If you booked the flight on your credit card and trip.com won’t give you a refund you’re entitled to, you can ask your bank or credit company to do a chargeback in many cases.

Other people seem to have had some luck contacting airlines directly when trip.com wouldn’t help them, but your mileage may vary with this one. The airline may well refuse to deal with you, because you have booked through a third party.

Trip.com are an awful company and no one should book with them ever . They should really go out of business for being this bad, and if there was justice in this world, they would. My advice to you is to always book directly with the airline if you can afford it. If you can’t afford it (which nowadays with crazy flight prices may well be the case), book with a company that’s based in your own country and is a member of reputable local trade associations you can turn to if anything goes wrong and the company misbehaves.

Have you had a bad experience with trip.com?

Feel free to comment below and tell your story. If you want to link to your reviews elsewhere, you are more than welcome to do that as well.

You are also more than welcome to let me know if you were considering booking with them and have changed your mind as a result of reading this post.

If you’ve had the misfortune of dealing with trip.com, you have my sympathies. I hope this page helps in some way for you to get the refund and compensation you deserve from these outright scammers.

Who are you really booking for when you book flights with Booking.com?

25 thoughts to “Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)”

I was just about to book a flight to Spain through them but then I saw your initial post about how terrible they were. Thanks for saving me!

I was about to pay them for my flight but my payment failed since they were not accepting my card for some reason. As you mentioned in your article, the customer person was useless as usual. Thankfully, when I opened twitter and searched for TRIP, i came accross this article. All I could do is thank you for writing this piece. I’m getting rid of this application straightaway. Will pay extra bucks but will get the tickets booked for elsewhere. Thanks again.

Thank you for letting me know! I’m so happy to have helped protect you from this awful company.

Looks like I just dodged a bullet. Thanks for sharing your experience, I’ve not travelled in a while and it can be so hard to figure out who are reliable travel companies and who are not. I won’t be using Trip.com and I’m sorry you had such an atrocious experience with them.

I have a similar experience. I had to purchase 4 different flights to Barcelona, all cancelled at the last min in the same week. The last booking I made i didn’t get a cancel notification but when i got to check in they said i was not listed and never was issued a ticket. I was at the airport for hours, the flight departed and I got an email saying to book the same flight for the next day but it was sold out. I did get the refund and they told me since there were no longer any non stop flights JFK to BCN and the price went up significantly that it would be fine to book any flight with another airline. I made sure to call 5 different agents to make sure that this was ok, ALWAYS GET AN EMAIL. They assured me that they had spoken to their manager and that there were notes on my account saying i was good to buy this expensive flight. The next day I was happy and positive I was getting on my flight so I called back to make sure that everything was ready only for them to tell me that they can no longer pay me the difference of my flight and that I am not eligible to cancel. This flight was 1,613.80 economy flight leaving from the same airport JFK, the only difference was that it had a stop in Frankfurt. Her solution was to buy ANOTHER flight from LGA…..a diff airport, I would have been tricked again due to it departing from another location. I have been trying to get this taken care of since June and all the agents keep telling me is that they will issue a ticket with their dispute team but I am stuck with a charge for a flight I was told to buy and never used after I realized I had been scammed. I had to buy a whole new flight the next day for $900 to get to Spain and Chase has not done anything to help me even though this is a fraudulent site. I have called back recently and the agents keep telling me to drop my disputes with the bank and they will refund me but when i tell them i want it typed out in an email they say that it is not possible. I have recordings of these misleading agents but banks cannot legaly use them. I thought it was a safe site because it is linked to sky scanner and PayPal but they know what they are doing and get away with it. Do NOT book on this site I am still dealing with this 4 months later and it will ruin your trip.

Wow. The more I read about these shysters, the more disgusted I am. Seems I got off lightly compared to so many others.

I was about to book a hotel on there, which is $200 cheaper than anything else I could find on any other platform. But, I am always wary of booking anything through new or unknown websites to me, so I did some research and found tons of bad reviews and no good reviews. This wasn’t the first bad review of them I found, but yours and everyone else’s reviews do help. They saved me from potentially losing over $800, so keep it up, please!

I just had in the last 3 days a most unhelpful , frustrating horrible experience with trip. com . I will certainly NEVER ever book with them again . It cost me 3 days of vacation and precious time , that I would rather have wanted to spend with my friends

I visited my daughter in Mexico and she vooked our flights through Trip.

We flew from Ottawa to Cancun and then had a connecting flight in Cancun to Mexico. Our first flight was late by almost 2 hours so we were unable to make the second flight from Cancun to Mexico. We had to stay a night in Cancun at a hotel and rebook with another airline the next day. That added up to 850.00 $ along with the cost of the original flight.

I have been arguing with them for weeks to get the refund for the second flight, which will not make up for the cost of rebooking but it is something at least. They kept telling us that the airline said there was not a 2 hour delay in the flight. We sent them screenshots of the arrival time of our flight at the airport and other additional information supporting the delay but they kept saying that the airline had not updated their system with thise times. They told us not to contact the airline about it, which of course means I did.

After I did contact the airline and sent them the proof we had of our arrival time in Cancun with a request that they update their information my daughter was partially refunded for the flight we missed. I say partially because the have not refunded us for our baggage as of yet. They are telling me that they do not refund baggage expenses. We requested they refund our baggage as well. We would have not payed for baggage without booking a flight. They are connected. Right now we are working on a method of refund. They are telling us because they have to do this manually they need our banking information. I told my daughter to refuse to do this and insist.on a refund through her.credit card, which is where all her other refunds have gone.

My return trip from Ottawa to Cancun was cancelled by the airline. I did not bother booking another one through trip. I vooked it through an airline directly. It took a while to get the money back from trip for this flight as well.

This has been the worst travel experience that I have had. I will never use Trip again. I would have rather paid more instead of being faced with additional costs at the last minute. There also would have been less frustration and time waisted contacting them and the airlines. It was not a good start to a vacation 😕

We booked a trip to NZ from Dublin via USA as it was far cheaper to take the route. We had to change our flights due to vaccination status for USA and we’re on attempt 4 of trying to do this. I wish we had never booked with trip.com every ‘travel consultant’ you ring and speak to will book the flight you request however you’ll get an email a few hours later saying that request has been cancelled due to no flights being available. It’s extremely frustrating and the time delays on trying to book a holiday is ridiculous.

Can absolutely confirm @Trip is a scam. Upon payment for an RT flight (second leg from India) I received an email confirmation saying “Your tickets are on the way to you”. None came. I started on Twitter and 2 days ago by emailing them demanding full refund. I received a canned reply telling me I can pick up my E-tickets at the airline counter. That was the first time I was informed that it is an E-ticket. Told them they did not answer my email upon which they (of course another person) pointed me to an email I had received after I changed the date of the return flight. “In your email you will find your ticket”. There is none in the email. Still working on it …. and will shortly contact consumer protection my country. Some details I found: Skyscammer (they use the name Skyscanner) is owned by Trip and Trip is in joint venture with TripAdvisor. Go figure.

BTW, an E-ticket would be an absolute no go for me because of the validity of 72 hours of a PCR test.

Here is a follow-up. It gets even better. I have been communicating by now with three girls of the Trip Customer Bullshitting Department. More entertainment from scam house @Trip Flight was on Jan. 30, 7:10 am local time. Trip sends email ‘Booking confirmation’ on Jan. 30, 10:01 am local time. Time diff. btw. two countries 4 h 30 min. !! Distance btw two countries 4,200 miles! That makes it 2:31 pm at the place of the fight departure.

Nuthouse @Trip doubles down.

Email from Jan. 30, attached PDF states Return flight February 5! Email from Jan. 18, Flight change confirmation for Return flight March 5!!! Of course they charged money for the change.

I requested the confirmation of the company address and name of Managing Dir. and his/her email address. 3 times! This is when they finally responded to that request. Before they continued sending me the flight details and would be happy to help… yadayada.

“I under stand (sic) that you need the name of the director and his/her email address.

Hier ein Artikel “Is trip.com legit? Why you should never use them in 2023 (or ever)”.

“… Regarding your flight from Delhi to Kathmandu round trip [xxx], I under stand that you need the name of the director and his/her email address.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide this information, but I will be more than happy to help you, if you have another questions…”

I think I found out your post pretty. Actually, I am having the very same issue you have, right now. I booked the ticket on trip.com about a month ago for the flight which I will be taking in next few weeks and just last week, I am informed that the flight is cancelled by the airline. When I desperately reached out to them, they replied that there are no more flights flying in the entire week and next week. I told them I am ok with different airline to connect since I cannot miss my flight for urgent meetings. Even so, they keep saying they cannot arrange it as they are just ticket selling agents and can do nothing more. I mean why the heck I am booking through them if they cant take any responsibilities at all. I talked to several agents through customer service but no one makes effort to help. They said they cannot do a thing to help me, even if I apply for refund, it is not sure for that is decided by airline. When I asked them to check with airline for me to arrange a replacement (ultimately the airline cancelled the flight based on what trip.com said), they replied airline say cannot and they dont give me the contact or not even the name of the office the airline when I said that I will reach out to the airline myself. Now, I am trying my very best to reach out the airline directly and seek help. Some of my friends from the industry said the responsibility lies with the ticketing agent but trip.com does not even bother to have consideration for the customers. So, fo fellow travelers, make no mistake. Dont ever use trip.com and please let your society know about it. Fraud like this company should not exist in our society and I sincerely do not want any more person to face this shitty experience.

I just gave a 1-star review on TrustPilot UK about Trip.com and the Hong Kong Regal Airport Hotel. I had to change my travel plans and need to go back to London earlier. i made a request to cancel one night of hotel reservation at the hotel booked through Trip.com. I called the hotel which said I had to t go through Trip.com. The advisor at Trip.com did not ask me for any reasons and replied “We tried very hard but hotel has strict policy…”. I then emailed my reasons and produced a new flight electronic ticket. Same reply. Total waste of time and space! Didnt know Trip.com was the successor to CTrip. Avoid at all costs!!

Hi there I have very similiar horrible experiences with trip.com. I had to book ticket to HK last year July and due to issues at the airports my flight got cancelled by trip.com. Subsequently I immediately cancelled my hotel in HK (quarantine hotel) in order to receive my refund on time and also requested for a refund at trip.com. But then a couple of days later, they booked me on another flight without my confirmation and I sent them emails/called telling them that I did not confirm and that I want my refund back because the time would have been conflicting with my quarantine hotel dates and anyways I cancelled my hotel! They refused to send me refund and customer services is absolutely useless and ignoring me even though at one time they even admitted that they made a mistake! So I got my lawyer to contact them, its now been nearly 9 months and they are refusing to give me a compensation or refund! My ticket cost me 1760EUR! From what I am reading I think i have no hope to get my money back 🙁 Unfortunately it is difficult to sue them because they have no office here in Germany (only postal address and they are not responding to my lawyers official letter) My lawyer cant help me either besides using the same stupid customer service email address.

but I will try skyscanner, this is a helpful tipp. Cheers

Anybody who would ever think of booking via trip.com DON’T. You will lose your money if things dont go as planned!

Wow! What a terrible company. I don’t know how it works in Germany, but in the UK you can take a company to the small claims court and if they don’t show up, then you win by default. Maybe it’s the same in Germany? Though I guess if it were, your lawyer would know about it and tell you. In the UK they would get the official letter with the court summons and then the court date happens with or without them. You win the money and costs if they don’t bother replying, which I’m guessing is what would happen in this case.

Having an absolute nightmare with trip.com. Booked flights for a wedding costing £3045 to find out by chance my flights were non existent. I received a call at 6am from trip which made me suspicious so I called the airline directly who said there was a booking for me however it had since been cancelled. Qatar airways would not give anymore information due to booking with a 3rd party. Trip denied all knowledge. “No ma’am everything is fine, I don’t know why they would give that information”. Currently 2 months down the line with zero help from trip and my credit card now maxed from adding more flights. I have a charge back ongoing with my credit card provider but I am now receiving very threatening emails from trip. Upon look through any correspondence from them. My flights weren’t “paid” till 5 days after my transaction, no word of a cancelled flight and I have 5 different reference numbers. I would strongly recommend no one books with them. This experience has truly knocked me ill.

What a nightmare! Good thing you can do a chargeback. Let them work it out with the credit card company. I guarantee you it’s not the first time they’ve had a chargeback. And the more they get those, the more at risk they are of not being able to work with the credit card companies!

wished that I have read your post earlier. My flight got cancelled due to weather and it affected all my subsequent flights. I decided to follow their prompt to rebook my flight, and was charged ~$700 for that. After that, it turned out that the other part of the flight couldn’t get rescheduled. As a result, I had to cancel the already rescheduled flight, which cost me another ~$700. In total, I lost $1400 rescheduling fee to Trip.com for nothing.

All their customer service cared about was to say “policies say so” that they couldn’t even explain what those policies are.

Worst travel company that I’ve dealt with.

We have had the worst experience ever in our lives with trip.com. Our business class airfare has essentially doubled because we had to change dates. Now we are stuck in France because of flight cancellations affecting planes using Heathrow due to a fault with the air traffic control system and trip.com again want to charge us thousands of dollars to change our booking dates which we have to do because we can’t get from France to Heathrow to connect with our flight back to Sydney.

Thank you for your information here. I will be writing on social media warning people never to book through trip.com. EVER!!!

Trip.com is really big scam bullshit I have a terrible experienced first time entire in my life we booked round trip from Sydney to Manila we booked September 17-23,2023 then we paid it I received an email my booked it was September12–18,2023 so I panic I cancelled straight away this is really bullshit I chat how many hours from the bullshit agents and their always repetitive and same explanations and words I said I want to talk from who’s asshole manager are in charge I have my contact number agent always telling their expedite my refund I said I want my money back that’s the only savings that I have no conscience no shame no fear from God their trained wisely their fucking asshole employee how to deal with the customer when I research about their reviews and complaints mostly are really bad their big scammer I’m asking all the time my money back they said had a time frame processing for this and their always sending about my refund application number I’m really frustrated until now I don’t have a job and that asshole trip.com that I encounter it’s really bad

I am a travel agent and wanted to test Trip.com however what I found out is very interesting

1) not bonded 2) They use fake photos to sell hotel rooms 3) there Chatbot over takes live Chat with agents 4) the are not booking directly with airlines they have to use 3rd parties 5) when you catch them cheating and over charging. Including not paying for baggage you pay them for they lie and lie and lie. 6) they have even cancelled a used airline ticket.

I have all the proof including the emails and chat records. Showing their issues and they dont care. Why should they as people have paid them. And when you go to your bank and do a charge back they get upset and start crying to you about the interest.

As for the Hotel industry ask most of them they dont like dealing with them. I can give you a list of them too

They just completely ruined two of my flights- always book through the airline, do not trust this company

Trip.com is $1100 (shortest possible flight times) The Cathay Pacific site (with the same flight length) is $1350. I could an extra 11 hour layover on the return flight and bring the price down to $1200, which isn't really ideal. Edit: clarification.

  14. Is trip.com legit as of 2021? : r/travel

The cost to buy my ticket (a round-trip flight from California to Las Vegas) was $33 from trip.com but $44 from Frontier.com. Generally I travel to Las Vegas for longer (and more expensive) trips, but for this trip, it was not worth it for me to pay the usual $150 round trip. I was either going to travel cheaply or just not go at all.

  21. Is trip.com legit? : r/TravelHacks

Yes they're legit and they try with their customer service, but it's not as smooth as buying direct from airline. I recommend being absolutely sure you get your trip /passenger details right the first time because it's annoying to change your reservation afterwards. I also had to checkin in person instead of online.

  22. Is trip.com a scam? : r/travel

THIS WEBSITE IS A COMPLETE SCAM! Normally, a 24-hour grace period is provided in case of errors in names. I simply forgot to include my surname, and TRIP.COM, after sending an email with a 30-minute deadline late at night, refused to issue a refund because the email was sent a few minutes past the deadline. This is clear bad faith!
