How to measure yourself, measure your height.
Our handy size charts match your height to the appropriate frame size so you need to be sure you’ve measured your height accurately.
- Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
- Make sure legs are together and your shoulders are back.
- Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
- Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.
Range of Reach
For most people to get the right frame size, measuring your height will suffice. However, you may find that your height is on the borderline of the range we suggest for a particular frame. If this occurs you need to measure the range of your reach or “Ape Index”. This will ensure you get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and your saddle.
- Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
- Life your arms out horizontally either side of you.
- Measure the distance from fingertip of one hand to fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
- Subtract your height from this figure to get your Ape Index.
- If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
- If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height you need the smaller size.
Stand Over Height
You should also consider your inside leg measurement when choosing your bike to ensure adequate stand over height. Stand over height is the clearance between the top tube and the bottom of your crotch. For mountain bikes we recommend a distance of 2-4 inches and for road or hybrid bikes 1-2 inches of clearance is required. This will ensure comfort when you’re stopped and standing astride the bike.
Our bike sizing charts take stand over height into consideration but if you have a particularly long or short inside leg measurement in relation to your height you will need to bear this in mind when selecting your frame size.
Riding Style
The way you ride and the type of bike you are into will also impact the frame size you should choose. For example, a trail devotee looking for an aggressive ride may prefer a smaller, more manoeuvrable bike size. It all comes down to personal preference and how the bike feels to you.
Our sizing charts aim to be as specific as possible so you can look up the particular type, make and model of bike you’re looking for. Remember, the sizes given in our guides are suggestions and should be used for general advice only. For the best possible fit we recommend popping in to your local Leisure Lakes Bikes store, or call 0800 083 0888 for expert advice tailored to you.

Brand new lightweight Trek Madone spotted: Has Trek killed the Emonda?
We get a close look at the bike that may become Trek’s one-and-only road race option
Liam Cahill / Our Media
Liam Cahill
A new, slimmed-down Trek Madone RSL has been spotted at the Critérium du Dauphiné, raising questions about the future of Trek’s road racing lineup.
The unreleased bike has been on a diet, compared to the current aero-focussed Madone – but retains the Madone name on the top tube. Trek's IsoFlow design – the hole in the seat tube – is present, too.
There are no official details on the new bike yet but, with Lidl-Trek riders using Trek's latest machine at the Dauphiné – a key Tour de France shakedown race – a release is likely to be around the corner.
One bike to rule them all?
The first notable aspect of the new bike is the slimmed-down silhouette.
Trek seems to have reduced the depth of tube shapes across the frame, suggesting the Madone has been on a diet to make it lighter.
This may mean that Trek claims the Madone can be used on all stages of a road race, be that the high mountains or flat sprint stages.
To do so, Trek will have had to take steps to retain the Madone’s aerodynamic credentials – though without wind tunnel and real-world testing data, it is impossible to decipher whether this is the case at this point in time.
What about the Emonda?
The key consideration is whether Trek has left space in its racing line-up for its current climbing bike, the Emonda .
Trek’s Emonda is currently the only bike the Lidl-Trek team has in use that can be built down to the UCI’s 6.8kg minimum weight limit. A 56cm Madone, for example, tipped our scales at 7.29kg for the existing model.
The slimmed-down tubes suggest weight savings.
Specialized killed off its Venge aero race bike, replacing it with the Tarmac SL7 and later refining the design with the current Tarmac SL8 . Pinarello, meanwhile, is among the brands to also offer one race bike, sticking steadfast to the Dogma for Team Ineos-Grenadiers.
If Trek has reduced the Madone’s weight to get closer to the UCI's minimum limit, it would be hard to see any racer opting for the less aero Emonda.
IsoFlow...lite
Trek sent the cycling world into a minor meltdown when it introduced the previous Madone in 2022 .
The IsoFlow seat tube hole and cantilevered seat post divided opinion, to put it mildly, but the design is back on the latest Madone, which comes only two years after the original release.
Back in 2022, IsoFlow replaced the IsoSpeed ‘decoupler’ system, which had been a feature of the Madone since it went all-in on aero with the 9 Series in 2015 .
Trek claimed IsoFlow allowed the Madone SLR to match the compliance of the previous IsoSpeed system on its stiffest setting. It was also said to improve the aerodynamic performance of the frame by “around 3 watts”, while saving weight.
It is unclear whether Trek has refined the IsoFlow system in any way. As a result, we’ll have to wait for word from the brand about drag reduction.
Aero water bottles
While the standard shape of a water bottle is ideal for fitting any bottle and cage to your bike, their tubular profile is not exactly aerodynamically optimised.
Some brands, such as Pinarello, make an effort to smooth the airflow onto the down tube bottle by recessing the mounting points into the tube.
Others, such as BMC, design proprietary bottle cages that sit flush with the down tube and seat tube.
Trek appears to have taken a different approach, creating a bottle and cage system that, at first glance, is specifically designed for the Madone SLR.
It’s a measure that we often see on time trial bikes, but with racers requiring several bottle hand-ups throughout a stage, it hasn’t yet been a common sight on the road.
Given that the new Madone has been seen with specific aero bottles, we would expect Trek to admit this plays a key role in keeping the Madone SLR as fast as the outgoing bike, if not making it faster.
When will we find out for sure? Well, there's no official news yet, but we'll bring it to you when Trek's ready to announce this new Madone.

Unbound Gravel was racing at its best
The Trek Driftless crew gave some of the gutsiest performances at one of the most grueling races in the world
In Emporia, Kansas, 200 miles of dry dirt road racing was decided by mere meters. Paige Onweller and Haley Hunter Smith finished third and fourth, respectively, in the largest heads up sprint in Unbound Gravel history. Nine women gunned it for the line, and Onweller and Smith would finish just one second back of winner Rosa Klöser.
Those results are praiseworthy on their own. They’re downright astounding given what both riders have gone through the last several weeks. Onweller is just 12 weeks removed from serious ankle surgery . Smith has been battling breathing issues since finishing fourth at Sea Otter last April. Neither expected to find themselves within spitting distance of the win at one of the hardest bike races in the world.
Torbjørn Andre Røed (yellow kit) and Russell Finsterwald (purple kit) sprinting to the line.
“I am absolutely blown away by my ride,” Onweller said. “I just committed to the process of racing aggressively, and I think that set me up really well to have a good day out there. And then ultimately, I never made any excuses.”
For the first time in the history of Unbound, the women were given their own start at 6:05 a.m., 15 minutes after the men. A battle of attrition ensued, with 30 riders getting whittled down to the final nine with under 100 miles to go.
“It was really cool to do a women’s only race,” Smith said. “It was my first time doing that in a drop bar event, and I honestly got pretty emotional out there a couple times at just how cool it was to roll in a peloton of 30 women, and just witnessing that strength and being empowered.”
Haley Hunter Smith just after a historic sprint finish.
With neither Smith nor Onweller feeling 100 percent, they had to use their energy wisely. Smith rode as efficiently as possible and smartly measured her fuel so that she didn’t agitate her breathing issues. Onweller, knowing that she was lacking top end speed, proactively took the front of the group on climbs to discourage attacks.
“I think about halfway through the race, I started recognizing that I was one of the stronger riders of the day,” Onweller said. “I also figured if I blew up, then at least I knew I gave it a good shot, and I could learn and bring that into the following years to try to come back and win the thing.”
Paige Onweller leading the pack.
Smith summed up the day succinctly.
“It was hot. It was fast,” Smith said. “I’m very surprised that I was able to stick in. I had a pretty decent breathing day and it all came down to the sprint. Fourth, so I’m pretty happy about that. And I’m very glad that Paige got on the true podium. I’m stoked that one of us was able to do it.”
In the men’s race, Torbjørn “Toby” Andre Røed and Russell Finsterwald also finished right next to each other, taking 11th and 12th respectively in a deep men’s field. They both battled hard.
Røed got up from two crashes and crossed the line with a bloody elbow. He was able to chase back onto the front group after his first fall just 40 minutes into the race. His second occurred with 20 minutes to the line, however, and prevented him from making his bid for the podium on a day when the Mid South winner was feeling on top of his game.
There's no topping the atmosphere at Unbound.
“It felt pretty bad to not be able to fight for that third place that I wanted to fight for,” Røed said. “I felt good enough to compete for it. So I’m definitely excited next year to come back and properly smash it, hopefully without any crashes.”
Finsterwald had a clean day, in which his only lament was just missing out on a move for a potential podium spot.
“Where to begin in a race as crazy as Unbound? In a field larger and deeper than ever, it was a hectic day of fighting for position, protecting equipment, and trying to play it smart tactically,” Finsterwald said. “The legs were good, but I didn’t play my cards right in the final miles and missed the move that went up the road to the podium. Still, I’m really proud of the effort, and really excited to see all my teammates excel over the weekend.”
Finsty in the heat of battle.
Including Joris Nieuwenhuis, who finished 34th in a guest appearance in the midst of the cyclocross offseason with Baloise-Trek, all five Trek-sponsored athletes crossed the finish line. They suffered no mechanicals at a race that is notoriously punishing on equipment. From frames, drivetrains and tires, to fueling and pit stops, the team support effort ran smoothly.
“Equipment performed flawlessly and the staff was incredibly dialed,” Smith said. “It was a really good day for everyone on the team, which is very rare at Unbound.”
The Trek Driftless family portrait.
After Unbound, Smith is now the No. 1 ranked rider on the women’s Life Time Grand Prix standings , having finished fourth in two events. Røed is sixth on the men’s standings, and Finsterwald is 13th. Four events remain in the series. Next up: The Leadville Trail 100 MTB on Aug. 10 in Colorado. Based on Saturday, the battle for the top of both standings could come down to the final pedal strokes of the season.
In the meantime, let’s bask in Saturday’s glow. Racing doesn’t get much better than what took place in Emporia. The Trek Driftless crew put on a show of strength, grit, and bravery — what people mean by “the spirit of gravel.” This crew showed that no matter the challenge before them, they’ll fight every inch.

Trek’s Carback Bicycle Radar Light Takes on the Market Leader
The Carback claims a better detection range than the Varia RTL515, but its real-world performance doesn't quite match up.
Takeaway: The Trek Carback is a serious contender to Garmin in the on-bike radar market. However, while the Carback nears the Varia RTL515’s performance, Trek’s claim of increased radar detection range fell short in our side-by-side testing.
Trek CarBack Radar Rear Bike Light
The Garmin Varia is so widely used and functions so well that Garmin essentially cornered the on-the-bike radar market. Competing units from Bryton and Magicshine are available, but they suffer from inconsistent car detection or poor battery life, so it’s hard to recommend anything other than the Varia.
I trust the Varia so much that I purchased a second one for my cargo bike right before having my first kid. While I know the radar cannot protect me from being run over by someone staring at their cell phone, it will at least alert me that a car is approaching me from behind.
If you were to force me to bet which brand would attempt to make a run at Garmin in the radar game, I’m not sure I would have picked Trek. But with its new Carback system, Trek comes closest to unseating Garmin from the taillight radar throne.
Overall, Trek’s Carback is a good product. The device offers solid detection, plus a few other very nice features that are upgrades over the Varia. Unfortunately for Trek, I don’t think the Carback beats out the Varia as the best product in the category, but it gives the category leader a run for its money.
Carback Details
Trek put a lot of thought into designing the Carback. Trek boosted the Carback's detection range from 460 feet claimed by the Varia to 790 feet (claimed by Trek) for the Carback. The brand switched from a 24Ghz radar to 77Ghz to accomplish this.
To support the more powerful radar, Trek installed a new 2,000 mAh battery, which provides the light a claimed 7-hour run time. However, in testing, I found the light’s run time closer to 8 to 9 hours, depending on the light mode used. The Carback has a very convenient LED light battery life gauge on the side of the device, something the Varia lacks. (Both lights also give you a low battery warning on your paired cycling computer.) The Carback charges with a USB-C plug, another nice upgrade from the Varia’s Micro-USB. The Carback and the Varia carry an IPX7 waterproof rating, and the lights are ANT+ and Bluetooth capable.
For mounting, the Trek Carback uses the same mount as Trek’s popular Flare RT series of lights. Basically, it is a rubber strap with Trek’s proprietary Blendr accessory mount attached. The best method to attach the Carback is directly to the saddle. If you ride with a Trek or Bontrager saddle, you can attach a Blendr mount directly to the shell with an adapter (sold separately).
A few places sell 3D-printed mounts and GoPro-style adapters to attach a Blendr accessory to various saddles and seatposts from other brands. If you want to move the Carback between different bikes, the rubber strap works fine., but I will eventually get annoyed with it, as I do with every other strap of this kind, and buy the right adapters for my bikes.
Side-by-Side Comparison to the Varia RTL515
I tested the Carback a few different ways. First, I rode with both the Carback and a Garmin Varia on my bike, each paired to a different cycling computer. I also rode quite a bit with a colleague, with one of us using the Carback and the other using the Varia. Finally, I did some back-to-back rides where I switched which radar system I used.
The good news is that the Carback is nearly as good as the Varia. And I recommend it to riders who already own the Flare RT lights and matching Blendr accessory mounts. It’s a no-brainer upgrade for these folks.
But there are two things that bug me about the Carback. First, Trek claims over a 71% improvement in detection range versus the Varia (790 feet vs 460). However, in real-world testing, this was not the case. In every scenario, either riding with both radar systems or riding side by side with a colleague, there was never any discernible difference between which system detected a car first. And in several instances, the Varia warned me of a car a second or two before the Carback.
Had Trek not claimed the greater detection, the Carback’s range would be at the same level as the Varia (which is great). But since the Carback only works on par with the Varia and not better (as claimed), I feel that Trek’s claims are somewhat misleading.
Second, the Carback lacks the variable light pattern of the Varia. When the Garmin detects a car, the Varia’s light pattern changes from steady red to flashing. Knowing that the Varia has another method to grab a driver's attention—short of slapping the cell phone out of their hand—that a cyclist is on the road is extra peace of mind for me. It’s a small detail, but it makes me always reach for the varia over the Carback.
I wanted to hear from Trek on both points and Alex Applegate, Trek's Electronics Marketing Manager, was kind enough to respond. “It was an intentional decision not to move away from our best and most visible flash pattern as cars were detected and approaching,” Applegate said regarding the lack of light pattern change. He also left open the possibility that this functionality might be added to the Carback.
Applegate also addressed the detection range question, “It is important to note that Radar requires line of sight, and in many cases, especially in city and suburban areas, the environment is the limiting factor.”
He continued, “Factors such as the crown of the road, curves in the road, and the angle of the rider and mount can all affect the line of sight and detection range. It is more common than you’d think for environmental factors to affect the range.” So, while I did not see an increased detection range in my extensive testing of the Carback, Trek is confident and fully stands behind its claim.
Final Thoughts
Trek produced a light and radar that functions almost equally to the Varia. And the Carback certainly is better than the other on-bike radar alternatives to Garmin. The Carback is slightly heavier than the Varia (86 grams vs. 72 grams). While it has less battery life, Trek’s nine-hour run time (compared to the Varia’s 16 hours) should be plenty for most riders. However, not needing to charge the device as often is convenient if you ride a lot.
Where the Carback improves on the Varia is with USB-C charging, which is almost a requirement for electronic accessories, especially at this price. Trek’s unit also has very easy-to-read battery life indicators. They are much more convenient than the Varia’s tiny little blinking LED, which is sometimes hard to see.
In the end, I can recommend both lights. If you already own Blendr accessories, going with the Carback is an easy choice. But because of the slimmer form factor or longer run time, the Varia still comes out a bit ahead. Plus, Garmin has the Varia RTL515 on sale right now for $50 less than the Carback, which makes it a no-brainer for anyone who doesn't already own a radar light. It’s nice when some competition can benefit the consumer.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
