Fury as TWO traveller camps set up in Birmingham for Easter

Eviction notices served by council after unauthorised camps set up Kings Norton and Perry Park

Birmingham has been targeted by TWO new illegal traveller camps ahead of the long Easter weekend - sparking new calls for the authorities to get tough.

Around 20 caravans have pitched up at a building site off Foyle Road in Kings Norton - an area hit repeatedly by unauthorised camps over the last few weeks.

The site, on the Hawkesley estate, has been cleared for new housing to be built.

And a second camp has seen ten caravans set up home in picturesque Perry Park, home of the Alexander Stadium and the city’s official BMX track.

Council bosses are understood to have started the eviction process at both sites - but it is unlikely they will be able to move them before Monday.

Residents and councillors are calling for further action to prevent the regular incursions.

Cllr Val Seabright (Lab, Kings Norton) said: “We’ve have these camps moving around the area from site to site for about eight weeks solid.

“The damage and the cost of cleaning up these sites is huge. Whatever action is being taken is obviously not helping, we need a policy which works.”

Meanwhile, Perry Barr councillor Jon Hunt (Lib Dem) is wondering how the caravans got through the locked gates at Perry Park.

He told the Great Barr Observer : “This is very alarming and disturbing and I want to know how they got in. It is difficult for them to get into these sites; to get into Perry Park they would have had to cut locks and commit criminal damage.

“It is disappointing that someone is prepared to do this. I shall be speaking to the council and the police.

“This means we are stuck with them over the weekend. If they do start to cause problems we have park staff working in both Perry Park and Perry Hall Park. I am grateful to them for getting on to this so fast.”

Mark Croxford, head of environmental health at Birmingham City Council, said: “The council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where illegal encampments encroach upon it.”

Last week the council announced it was taking steps to open three official sites for travellers, two on under-used car parks in Nechells and the third would see the out-of-action Castle Vale site restored.

This would enable the council to speed up the eviction process and clear unauthorised camps more quickly.

The house is cosy for 4 people so probably only suited to 4 for a short stay (although 4 guests have happily stayed longer!). The road is in a quiet residential area so no parties or loud noise please. Shops, restaurants & pubs 5 min walk. Railway line behind the houses opposite but noise from this is minimal & house is double glazed.
