a trip in vs. a trip to

Hello everyone, Would it be possible to use the preposition in after the noun trip instead of to ? In that case, is there any difference in meaning? Example: - a) The had organized a trip in [region/state/defined area/city - e.g. Normandy, California, the Alps, Berlin ] - b) They were on a trip in [region/state/defined area/city] Thank you .

"in" and "to" in a sentence about trips have slightly different meanings. They had organized a trip in Normandy. This sounds like they are already in Normandy, traveling around and seeing things. They had organized a trip to Normandy. This sounds like they are still back at home, waiting for the trip to start. But really, the difference is not very big, and everyone would understand you whichever word you used.

sdgraham

If you are trying to emphasize that they visited several places in that location I would use "around". They organized a trip around Normandy.

Breaking Down Travel Queries in an Age of AI-Powered Search

Rafat Ali , Skift

May 20th, 2024 at 1:44 PM EDT

The new Google search results in an age of AI-powered search is a fascinating mix of usefulness, uselessness, and sheer overwhelm of formats.

This past week, Google made a significant leap in the AI-driven search domain with the launch of its latest search capabilities and a more advanced Gemini AI model.

A new AI Overview stands out as a key feature in Google Search, and provides comprehensive summaries for complex travel queries. For instance, a query about the best time to visit London now generates a curated overview, complete with suggested itineraries, travel tips, and related multimedia content.

This represents a big shift from traditional search listings and new ground for travel and tourism brands and organizations to understand and master.

Many of these changes in Google Search have been going on for a few years now, and this is a new phase of AI.

I did a 10-minute video walkthrough based on the popular query, “What’s the best time to visit London?” You will see how mind-bogglingly complex this new world is, for travelers and industry folks alike.

Watch the Video

My observations:

  • It is still early: AI answers have not been turned on for all queries or for all countries – it is still being rolled out.
  • This works best for purely informational queries – “best time to visit”-type questions. Anything with shades of gray doesn’t yet turn up AI-generated answers.
  • Results are a lot richer on mobile than on desktop.
  • The travel information landscape is now infinitely more complex, as Google is pulling results from across many different media and display formats and creating many different formats of display within search results.
  • Besides the results for the actual query itself, Google is now trying to push many related queries down your throat in hopes of keeping you engaged for a longer time.
  • Official tourism board websites – which weren’t the most heavily trafficked sources of traveler information to begin with – will be even less relevant in this new environment. The most DMOs can hope for is that Google pulls some snippets from their sites. But as our example shows, Visit London barely gets two links or snippets in the very long results page. This was the same across many other destinations I tested.
  • Trusted reader forums take on an important meaning in this age. Google is prioritizing sites like Reddit and Quora and, in travel specifically, Tripadvisor’s forums, which have generally been ignored by the company and usually have very outdated information.
  • Reddit as a source of competition for any travel information query is the biggest new change in search in 2024, and there is very little the brands can do about it.
  • It will contextualize results based on your location, which has been the case for a while now.
  • YouTube videos are very important in the Google search environment and the technology has advanced a lot such that it can extract exact answers in the form of video snippets.
  • Ads on Google will continue to have a part. But it’s unclear how inventory to display them will be affected if people can get answers right away for many easy queries.

Many ancient cultures and religions celebrate celestial cycles, including finding ways to honor and harness the power of the full moon.

To make best use of this intense energy, many astrologers believe that a full moon is a great time to manifest your dreams.

Thomas said because Sagittarius is a Fire sign, incorporating fire into your rituals can be particularly powerful.

Using candles, incense or sage smoke for manifestation for examples, can be quite potent.

“Writing down things you’d like to release from your life or spirit on paper and then burning them can be a cathartic way of working with the energy,” according to Thomas.

Potential meditations, mantras or journal prompts:

  • I expand my horizons and pursue new adventures.
  • My mind, spirit, and life are limitless like the sky.
  • I choose to be an eternal sojourner.
  • I am curious about new ideas and lifestyles and am open to unique perspectives.

Reality is setting in, Gemini! According to Thomas, “You are at a time where you will be facing the truth in a significant partnership. On one hand, this could bring you closer…however, if you’re not in alignment, you’ll surely decide it’s time to part ways—hopefully amicably.”

'No sign of life' at crash site of helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, state media says: Updates

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on the crash of the Iranian president's helicopter for Sunday, May 19. For the latest news, view our live updates file for Monday, May 20.

Hope is dwindling in the search for survivors after "no sign of life" was detected at the crash site of a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister, according to Iranian state media.

Rescue teams had located the incident site on Monday after Raisi and other top officials crashed into a mountainous area of northwest Iran the day before. The officials had been missing for over 12 hours and search operations were hindered by blizzards and difficult terrain through the night.

No survivors were found, Iranian state news agency IRINN and semi-official news agency Mehr News reported. "President Raisi's helicopter was completely burned in the crash ... unfortunately, all passengers are feared dead," an official told Reuters.

Citing Pir-Hossein Kolivand, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Iranian state media reported that rescue teams had identified the incident site early Monday. Kolivand did not provide further details but said "the condition is not good," according to Iranian state news agency IRNA.

A Turkish drone identified a source of heat which was suspected to be the helicopter's wreckage and shared the coordinates of the possible crash site with Iranian authorities, Anadolu news agency said on X.

Darkness and cold, rainy, and muddy conditions made it difficult for rescuers to reach the incident site, according to Iranian state media, which said the rain later turned into driving snow. The chief of staff of Iran's army ordered all the resources of the army and the elite Revolutionary Guard to be put to use in the search and rescue operations, Reuters reported.

Raisi, Amirabdollahian, and other top officials were returning from a trip to the border with Azerbaijan for the inauguration of a dam. Raisi, 63, is second only to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the country's political hierarchy. The hardline Raisi has long been considered a strong candidate to succeed Khamenei, his 85-year-old mentor.

About an hour after the crash, rescue teams reached the area and started search operations, Iran's Press TV reported. But they faced an extremely tough task in the mountain terrain and Babak Mahmoudi, who leads the relief and rescue operation for the Iranian Red Crescent Society, told Press TV that visibility was less than 15 feet.

"We have rain pouring down and the ground is slippery and muddy,'' Mahmoudi said, according to the broadcast's translation. "That has really complicated the efforts there.''

The incident comes at a turbulent moment for Iran, the main supporter of anti-Israeli militia groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen. Last month, Iran took the unprecedented step of firing a barrage of missiles and drones into Israeli territory − an attack largely repelled with the help of U.S. forces − in retaliation for the killing of a top Iranian general and other military officials at the Iranian embassy in Syria, a strike widely attributed to Israel.

The U.S. has been making concerted efforts to keep the Israel-Hamas war from escalating into a regional conflict, most recently sending national security adviser Jake Sullivan on a weekend trip to Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Graphic close-up: Maps show how US, Israeli weaponry was used against Iran's aerial attack

Developments:

∎ Khamenei tried to appease public concerns in a statement, saying: "We hope that God returns the honorable president and his companions to the arms of the nation. All must pray for the health of this group of civil servants. The Iranian nation must not be concerned or worried; there will be no disruption in the work of the country."

∎ The Iranian armed forces have picked signals from the helicopter and a crew member's cell phone, informing rescuers about the location of the crash site, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported.

∎ President Joe Biden has been briefed on the helicopter crash, White House press secretary Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One. The State Department said it is "closely following reports" of the incident.

∎ Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Russia, have offered to help with search and rescue efforts. The European Union said it activated its satellite mapping service to lend assistance at Iran's request.

∎ Raisi and the rest of his traveling party were flying in a U.S.-made Bell 212 helicopter with capacity for 15 people, including crew, although it's not clear how many were on board, Al Jazeera reported.

Who is Ebrahim Raisi? Iranian president missing after helicopter crash: Here's what to know about Raisi

What power does the Iranian president have?

Raisi was elected president in 2021, and since taking office has ordered a tightening of morality laws, overseen a bloody crackdown on antigovernment protests and pushed hard in nuclear talks with world powers.

In Iran's dual political system, split between the clerical establishment and the government, it is the supreme leader rather than the president who has the final say on all major policies. Khamenei has strongly endorsed Raisi's main policies.

Raisi's victory in a closely managed election in 2021 brought all branches of power under the control of hardliners, after eight years when the presidency had been held by pragmatist Hassan Rouhani, who negotiated a nuclear deal with Obama administration officials.

But Raisi's standing may have been dented by widespread protests against clerical rule and a failure to turn around Iran's economy, hamstrung by Western sanctions.

Raisi had been at the Azerbaijani border for the opening of the Qiz-Qalaisi Dam, a joint project. Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi told state TV only that one of the helicopters in a group of three had come down in the incident, and that authorities were awaiting further details.

What happens if an Iranian president dies while in office?

If an Iranian president dies in office, the first vice president takes over, with the confirmation of the supreme leader, who has the final say in all matters of state, according to Article 131 of the Islamic Republic’s constitution.

A council consisting of the first vice president, the speaker of parliament, and the head of the judiciary must arrange an election for a new president within a maximum period of 50 days, the constitution says.

Cold, foggy in mountain forest where helicopter crashed

Weather information from the World Meteorological Organization indicates conditions in the region along and near the border of southern Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran were cloudy with high humidity early Sunday evening.

Pictures circulating in media reports showed rescue workers in dense fog, and that’s supported by images from European satellites that show clouds and fog in the region.

The helicopter reportedly went down in a heavily wooded part of the vast Arasbaran forest where three countries have conservation areas and where scientists study endangered species such as the Persian leopard.

Think you’ve just got a hangover these symptoms after drinking alcohol mean you may have something worse.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A pounding headache and stomach-churning nausea are hallmark signs you had a few too many — but experts say it could mean something more dangerous to your health .

While a post-holiday hangover is to be expected after downing copious cocktails or brews, health professionals say you should be concerned if the symptoms come on after only one or two drinks.

It could be a sign of alcohol intolerance, they say.

“In reality, an alcohol intolerance is different from an alcohol allergy,” allergist-immunologist Dr. Jeffrey Factor told HuffPost , noting that the issue arises in his own patients “a fair amount.”

“Alcohol intolerances are much more common than a true alcohol allergy,” he declared.

Young woman sleeping in bed after a party, with a bottle of whiskey next to her as sunlight shines into the room

Symptoms of an alcohol intolerance include flushing and redness, hives, worsening of asthma, a stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting and low blood pressure.

According to Mayo Clinic , an intolerance to alcohol, which is typically genetic, occurs because the body is unable to efficiently break down the toxins that are present in alcohol. However, other chemicals, ingredients, sulfites, preservatives and histamine, which is a result of brewing or fermenting alcohol, can also trigger a reaction.

“This is even further complicated when you talk about cocktails, which can be mixed with anything,” Trevor Craig, a corporate director of technical consulting for Microbac Laboratories, told HuffPost.

It is different from a true allergy, in which the immune system triggers a response to the alcoholic beverage. An intolerance, per Factor, does not involve the immune system, although the symptoms are very similar to that of an allergy.

“So, you can’t look at a particular reaction and say, ‘Oh that’s definitely an allergy versus an intolerance to alcohol,’” said Factor, who is also a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Unfortunately, there is no tried and true way to test for an alcohol allergy. Unlike other allergies, pricking the skin with the suspected allergen — in this case, alcohol — will not yield accurate results.

There are other tests available, like a blood test, but a doctor may test patients for an allergy to the common ingredients in alcoholic drinks, such as yeast, barley, dairy and more, which can crop up at any age.

According to Factor, patients commonly come in describing sudden intolerance or allergy-like symptoms related to alcohol consumption.

If you’re allergic to the ingredients within alcoholic beverages, it may be wise to skip the drinks all together, as experts claim that the Food and Drug Administration does not require allergens to be listed on alcohol bottles, unlike other foods and drinks.

Not to mention, “you might be ordering from a bar and not even have access to the bottle,” noted Craig.

“If you don’t know what’s in your drink and your allergy is serious, then skip it,” he advised.

Unfortunately, the guaranteed tactic to avoiding a reaction is to stop drinking booze — or at least the ones you notice are aggravating your symptoms.

“The bottom line is this: There’s no treatment, no testing of any significant value, and the solution is really just to avoid that alcohol, or alcohol in general,” Factor explained. “It’s not a very pleasing solution for a lot of people, but that’s what it is.”

What to Know About the I.C.C. Prosecutor’s Request for Warrants for Israeli and Hamas Leaders

The International Criminal Court prosecutor requested arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Hamas leaders. Here is a closer look at the court and the warrant.

Karim Khan, the International Criminal Court prosecutor, in his judicial robes in a courtroom.

By Emma Bubola and Charlie Savage

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Monday that he had requested arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and the leaders of Hamas. Here’s a closer look at the court and the warrants.

The prosecutor is accusing both sides of war crimes.

The court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, said in a statement that he was applying for arrest warrants for Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas because he had “reasonable grounds to believe” that they were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity, which included “the killing of hundreds of Israeli civilians” in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, and the taking of at least 245 hostages.

Mr. Khan said that the Hamas officials “planned and instigated the commission of crimes” on that day, and that they “have acknowledged their responsibility for those crimes” through their actions, such as personal visits to hostages shortly after their kidnapping.

The prosecutor cited accusations of murder, extermination, hostage-taking, and acts of sexual violence as war crimes. He also said he had reasonable grounds to believe the officials were responsible for acts of torture and cruel treatment.

Mr. Khan also said that he had requested arrest warrants for Mr. Netanyahu and Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, because there were reasonable grounds to believe that they bore responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the starvation of civilians as a weapon of war and “intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population.”

Mr. Khan said that these crimes were committed “as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population.” He also said that in his office’s view, some of the crimes “continue to this day.”

“International law and the laws of armed conflict apply to all,” he said. “No foot soldier, no commander, no civilian leader — no one — can act with impunity. Nothing can justify willfully depriving human beings, including so many women and children, the basic necessities required for life. Nothing can justify the taking of hostages or the targeting of civilians.”

The International Criminal Court was set up under a 1998 treaty, but the U.S. and Israel aren’t members.

The International Criminal Court is an international court that has jurisdiction to prosecute people for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

It was established in 2002 as a standing body to investigate those crimes under a 1998 treaty known as the Rome Statute. Previously, the United Nations Security Council had set up ad hoc tribunals to address atrocities in specific places, like the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

The I.C.C. is based in The Hague, a Dutch city that has long been a center for international law and justice. It is separate from the International Court of Justice, an international tribunal also in The Hague which is an arm of the United Nations and handles civil disputes between countries. The latter is currently weighing a claim brought by South Africa that Israel is conducting a genocide in Gaza . Israel has strongly denied the accusation.

Many democracies joined the International Criminal Court, including close American allies like Britain. The court has recognized Palestine as a member since 2015.

But neither Israel nor the United States is a member. The United States, which conducts numerous military operations abroad, has taken the position that the court should not exercise jurisdiction over citizens from countries that are not parties to the treaty.

That position, however, has been tested by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia is not a member, but Ukraine is. Last year, the court issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir V. Putin and another Russian official, saying they bore individual criminal responsibility for the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After a lengthy internal debate, President Biden ordered the U.S. government to share evidence of Russian war crimes with the court.

The arrest warrants have the immediate effect of limiting travel for targets.

Mr. Khan’s request for warrants must still be approved by judges on the court. If they are issued, the warrants would put both the Israeli officials and Hamas leaders at risk of being arrested and sent to The Hague for trial if they travel to one of the court’s 124 member nations , which include most European countries.

Presumably they would not go to countries that would arrest and extradite them, in which case they may never stand trial. But the effective travel restrictions would function as a kind of punishment in and of themselves.

“Israel will be more isolated after this action,” said Stephen Rapp, a former U.S. ambassador at large who headed the Office of Global Criminal Justice in the State Department. He said that if the arrest warrants go ahead, the named officials “will find it hard to travel to two-thirds of the world.”

The warrant request represents one of the harshest condemnations of Israel’s strategy in its war against Hamas and its campaign’s toll on Gaza’s civilian population. But Mr. Rapp said that Israel “has proved itself sort of immune to international pressure, ” and it was unclear whether the prosecutor’s actions would have an impact on its strategy in Gaza.

The I.C.C. cannot try defendants in absentia . It also has no police force, relying on member states to arrest fugitives and transfer them to The Hague.

In the case of Mr. Putin, the judges approved the request within weeks.

The prosecutor is accusing Israeli officials of intentionally targeting civilians and using starvation as a weapon.

Mr. Khan said that he believed Israeli officials were responsible for intentionally attacking civilians, but he largely focused on allegations of starvation, and extermination or murder “including in the context of deaths caused by starvation.”

For months, Israel has been criticized for the scale of civilian deaths, but Israeli officials have blamed Hamas for the toll, accusing the armed group of using civilians as a shield, its fighters deliberately hiding among and beneath noncombatants.

Under the laws of war, it can be lawful to pull the trigger knowing that some civilian bystanders are likely to be killed, so long as the harm to innocents is deemed to be necessary and proportionate to striking a legitimate military target.

Mr. Rapp, the former U.S. ambassador, said that prosecutors’ greater emphasis on accusations that Israeli officials have restricted the transfer of critical supplies of food and medicine to civilians may be because that issue is “relatively simple” compared to second-guessing targeting decisions.

“The humanitarian rules are very strict,” he said, adding that a state which conducts a military operation in an area of which it controls the perimeter must ensure that civilians have the means of survival.

“If you look at the black letter of international law in this area, it is actually very, very clear,” he said.

Israel’s foreign minister denounced the warrant applications.

Neither Mr. Netanyahu nor Mr. Gallant immediately commented on the decision.

Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, said that he had ordered the immediate establishment of a special committee aimed at fighting the decision, which he said “was intended first and foremost to tie the hands of the State of Israel and deny it the right of self-defense.”

The “scandalous” prosecutor’s decision, he said, “is a frontal attack without restraint on the victims of Oct. 7 and our 128 hostages in Gaza.”

In a statement on Telegram, Hamas condemned the warrant requests against its leaders. It said that the prosecutor should demand the arrest not only of Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant but of all “leaders, officers and soldiers who participated in crimes against the Palestinian people.”

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article said that the United States and Israel hadn’t signed the treaty that set up the International Criminal Court. They signed, but are not members.
