My family of six from the United States had a spectacular day touring while we were in Korea for my daughter’s wedding. Mr. Young was a fabulous guide. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Great tour of Seoul! Hit all the essential spots in one go, without having to plan more. Stress free experience with a knowledgeable guide!

Well, Good location, staff is good, my wife so happy in here. I will return in the future. thank you so much. Bridge is good!

We had Sadie as our tour guide. Sadie spoke English well and was very knowledgeable. Sadie was also very organised and made sure we stuck to the schedule without feeling rushed. Lots of free time between each stop. Unfortunately went on a rainy day and could not see anything from the observatory. Would recommend this tour if you want to know a little bit more about the divide/history between South Korea and North Korea.

K-pop girl group BLACKPINK made a triumphant return home on Sunday after wrapping up its “Born Pink” tour ― the largest-ever world tour for a K-pop girl group that attracted an unprecedented 1.8 million concertgoers worldwide.

The YG Entertainment stars held a sold-out tour finale concert at Gocheok Sky Dome in southwestern Seoul’s Guro District, the place where they started their globe-trotting journey last October. After staging 64 concerts in 34 cities including LA, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney and Abu Dhabi, the quartet has elevated its performing skills to the next level, showcasing the best version of itself during the 120-minute show.

“I am really happy that so many people have joined our last concert to support us,” member Rose said during the concert. “I am also glad that we can finish off our tour in Seoul.”

seoul tour group

Sunday’s extravaganza began with the powerful “Pink Venom,” a song from the group’s second full-length album, “Born Pink” (2022). Clad in dazzling white, the four members ― Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose ― popped up on stage amid ear-splitting screams and performed their smash-hits like “How You Like That” (2020) against a backdrop inspired by traditional Korean architecture. It was more sophisticated version of the one used for BLACKPINK’s show in April at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, one of North America’s largest music festivals.

Throughout the concert, BLACKPINK predominantly focused on delivering quality performances instead of talking between songs, letting fans immerse themselves in the group’s eclectic music and dance performances.

The four members created great synergy as a team, but they also displayed their impeccable solo artists sides. Jennie started off her solo performance with her take on “Solo” (2018) and “YOU & ME” (2022). “Gone” (2021) and “On the Ground” (2021) by Rose, which highlighted her mellifluous voice and wide vocal range, made the audience grow sentimental. Jisoo stole the show like the title of her solo release, “All Eyes On Me” (2023) before commanding the stage with “FLOWER” (2023). Lisa wowed people with her dancing prowess during her gripping rendition of “MONEY” (2021).

seoul tour group

One of the crown jewels of the concert was BLACKPINK’s performance of “Typa Girl” (2022), which wove together elements of a musical and "buchaechum," a traditional Korean fan dance. Dancing along with a group of male dancers with huge white feather fans, the K-pop stars manifested their ability to integrate Korean culture into their modern, global appeal.

“Unlike our previous shows, every performance today is striking a chord with me,” Jennie said. “We are marking an end to our one-year tour today, so I hope you all enjoy it until the end.”

Some BLACKPINK fans and K-pop industry insiders speculated that the singers would address the issue of their contract renewal with YG Entertainment during the show. The four members, who debuted in 2016, soon have to decide whether to maintain their partnership with YG. The members, however, did not disclose any specific details.

“We already have been together for 2,596 days,” Lisa, who was rumored to have rejected a contract renewal offer, told her followers. “We could perform in many great venues thanks to you. Thank you so much for brightening up my 20s with me.”

Jisoo said, “I want to show appreciation to you all for helping us build precious memories. I think it’s great that none of us got sick while we were on tour.”

Jennie recalled that it was a tumultuous year.

“We could only reach this point because we have each other,” she said. “This year marks the seventh anniversary of our debut, but in hindsight, we did not have much of a chance to meet our followers in Korea. That was why we wanted to play our last concerts in Seoul.”

The 27-year-old added, “In the days ahead, we will continue to work hard to be seen as a cool group.”

Girl group ARTMS debuts as virtual angels with album 'DALL'

ARTMS poses for the cameras on Thursday at Blue Square’s Mastercard Hall in Yongsan District, central Seoul. [MODHAUS]

There was once an idea to bring together 12 women and shoot for the moon. Then life got in the way, and friends had to go their separate ways. But later, five of the members decided to come together as a girl group once again, under the name ARTMS .

“It took a long time for ARTMS to finally debut,” group member Heejin said during a press showcase on Thursday at Blue Square’s Mastercard Hall in Yongsan District, central Seoul.

The girl group’s first full-length album, “DALL,” drops this Friday at 1 p.m., with the lead track "Virtual Angel."

“It's an album that we've prepared so hard for this hot summer," she said.

Girl group artms to kick off first world tour with seoul shows in july, five former loona members to debut as artms in may, loona member haseul joins modhaus's artms.

The girl group started rolling out songs from its album as a preview to its debut, starting with "Birth" on March 29. The group has since released three more singles, “Flower Rhythm,” “Candy Crush” and “Air.”

"I was almost overwhelmed with tears as we were performing 'Virtual Angel' earlier," said an emotional Heejin, seemingly reminiscing back to the days of hardship that led to the very moment.

ARTMS' single, ″Birth,″ released on March 29 [MODHAUS]

ARTMS' first full-length album, "DALL," is short for "Devine All Love & Live," similar to the EP "Love & Live," which was released by Loona subunit Loona 1/3 in 2017. “The album is about love and life, which are paradoxes of both blessings and violence,” said group member Kim Lip .

The music is evidence that ARTMS is not trying to deny its past; the songs from "DALL" use samples from the members' previous work.

“My favorite song on the album is ‘Candy Crush,’” said group member Haseul . “It samples my song ‘Plastic Candy’ (2023).”

Lead track, "Virtual Angel," from ARTMS’ first full-length album “DALL” [MODHAUS]

ARTMS is looking forward to a new future with a firm grip on its legacy. The music video of the lead track, “Virtual Angel,” was shot by art director digipedi, who worked with the members since Loona, but shows a complete departure from the members' past videos.

The video has a psychedelic aura with flashing montages of different scenes rapidly cut and pasted over each other. “I thought it was fresh because we used a lot of new techniques,” said Heejin. “If you focus on one particular scene, there is a story being told. I hope our fans can catch on after watching it multiple times.”

“We worked with digipedi since our debut in Loona,” said Haseul. “It was a pleasure to work with them again, and we got to try many new things this time as ARTMS.” The costume design reflected the darker and edgier editing, with the members posing in angel costumes contrasting against gothic makeup and high tech props like VR goggles.

ARTMS' debut full-length album,"DALL," drops on Friday, 1 p.m. [MODHAUS]

“DALL” features 11 tracks: the lead track “Virtual Angel,” “url,” “Sparkle,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “Flower Rhythm,” “Candy Crush,” “Air,” “Unf/air,” “Distress,” “Butterfly Effect” and “Birth.”

The music was just as adventurous as the visuals, with ARTMS stepping out of the K-pop mold to try different genres and moods. “Virtual Angel” is a Eurodance track with booming drums, and “Sparkle” is a jam with sparse rhythms one might hear at a rave. “Flower Rhythm” begins with meditative metallic melodies, and then suddenly transitions into bouncy synthesizers.

"I think we have to dream big, so our goal is to top the Billboard 200,” said group member Cheorry . “Our CEO promised to buy all of us a luxury bag if we get No. 1 on the Korean music charts,” she added.

ARTMS’ first full-length album, “DALL,” will be released on streaming platforms on Friday, at 1 p.m. The girl group will also go on its first world tour, “Moonshot,” which begins this year on July 20.

[Herald Review] Shinee wraps up 6th world tour with Onew back from hiatus

Published : May 27, 2024 - 14:57

Last day of Shinee's three-day encore concert

As K-pop veteran Shinee's final encore concert began Sunday at the Inspire Arena in Incheon, the giant LED screens showed video art of the boy band's silhouette. When the mid-section of the LED screens lowered, they revealed the main stage with Onew, Minho, Key and Taemin. The members kicked off the final performance of their three-day encore concert, "Perfect Illumination: Shinee’s Back," with their mega-hit singles “Clue” and "Sherlock."

The encore concert, held from Friday to Sunday, also marked the finale of the group's sixth world tour, which began on June 23, 2023, in Seoul. The boy band toured Singapore, Hong Kong and four cities in Japan -- Saitama, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo.

From Friday to Sunday, around 30,000 fans gathered at the venue to watch the group boast their powerful performance and vocal skills as K-pop artists with more than 15 years of experience.

When performing “Satellite,” a Side-B track of the group’s eighth full-length album, the main stage slowly moved toward the center of the venue to allow Shinee to get closer to their fans.

“Shinee World (fandom name) did you miss us? We missed you too,” said Minho of Shinee.

“This is the last day of our concert. Today we are going to enjoy as if there is no tomorrow, and we hope you do so, too. Those of you watching us from home should also join us by enjoying the show to the fullest,” said Taemin of Shinee.

Sunday’s show was also live-streamed via online streaming platforms Beyond Live and Weverse for global fans.

Shinee brought variation to the stages by using stand mics for the choreography of “Dream Girl” and chairs for “Good Evening.”

During a short dance performance by the SM dance crew, Shinee changed into grayish camouflage patterned outfits for the show’s second section.

Minho and Taemin showed off their abs when performing “Don’t Call Me,” a hip-hop-based dance song and “Body Rhythm,” a reggae genre dance song, making their fans go crazy.

The artists’ performance was so energetic that Key of Shinee’s head microphone broke in the middle of “Don’t Call Me.”

Onew of Shinee led the concert to its climax with his explosive vocal singing “Everybody.”

Cheers from the audience rose to an earsplitting level, and confetti exploded, making the concert feel like a festival.

Last day of Shinee's three-day encore concert

Shinee then charmed its audience with mellow songs such as “Replay,” “Love Like Oxygen” and “Aside.”

The members created a heartwarming scene by making a group hug at the end of “Aside.”

When the concert neared its end, Shinee’s fans surprised the artists by holding up their phones with flashlights on.

Taemin was brought to tears when singing “An Encore,” the last song on its set list of 21 songs.

“I got emotional because I was thinking about Jonghyun before getting up on stage for ‘An Encore’ and then I saw the flashlight. It felt as if I was dreaming,” said Taemin.

“Thank you for lighting up our lives. Because of your support, our journey continues to shine. Doing this concert, made me think of Jonghyun a lot. I always think that he is with us. We will always be a group of five,” said Key of Shinee.

Shinee debuted as a quintet comprising Onew, Minho, Key, Taemin and the late Jonghyun in 2008.

Jonghyun passed away in 2017.

This concert marked Onew's return to the group after a year of break due to health issues.

“Thank you for waiting for me. Because of you guys and our bandmates, I was able to return healthy back on stage. I missed you and I love you,” said Onew.

Fantastic DMZ Tour

The DMZ Tour was terrific. The tour starts very early but having just arrived in South Korea the day before from North America we were still jet lagged and up early anyway so the early start wasn't an issue. The tour guide Vincent was extremely kind and very knowledgeable. He confirmed the pickup place and time via WhatsApp so communicating with him prior to the tour was easy. Wearing comfortable clothes and shoes is a must. There's some hiking involved and coming back up from the 3rd infiltration tunnel was pretty intense . The weather wasn't the best on the day of the tour so we didn't get a clear view of N. Korea but the tour is definitely a must do. It was worth it!

I was expecting more drama more wires high and electrical. But I saw a quite beautiful place along the border. Comparing I've seen similar situations in very bad conditions but here greenery, working fields, very clean with parks.

seoul tour group

This was all-around an excellent tour. The tour guide Vincent is funny and very knowledgeable about everything that has to do with the DMZ and a lot of Korean history too. The tour is very well paced and I don't feel like anything was left out or that anything was too much. It's also great that it's a small group tour (we were 8 in total, and judging by the space in the minibus I'd say there was maybe space for one or two more people at the most). The only "negative" is how early we get picked up, but that's absolutely necessary to get the most out of the tour and not come back too late. All in all, a very easy 5* to give!

Writing the review on behalf of my wife. I’ve taken many customers over the years on the DMZ tour. At least 3-4 per year. Family vacation in Korea and the fam. Two young adult kids. So when my wife booked this…. At this price…. I was a little worried. Picked up early in a Hyundai Solati. Roomy and comfortable. Very impressed compared to my past experience. The entire trip was outstanding. I told Vincent that he was the best guide overall I’ve had in all my years of doing this. Very good guide regardless of price, but thankful of its moderate price. Very impressed with Vincent. I would do any tour that he leads. From California

I was business traveling in the area. With the geographical opportunity and my father was in the war, I wanted to experience the DMZ. Ironically we did pass an area that he actually fought. The tour which like most tours has an element of hurry up and wait or waiting for people to be respectful of time. Was a great experience. Being a smaller group help minimize the downfalls of tours. The few dollars extra was worth it.

seoul tour group

Great and efficient tour, well explained and ensured being well placed in different queues . In addition, the overall schedule was greatly managed.

Very interesting tour and friendly guide Joo Eee! Early wake up but worth it. Just make sure to bring something to snack/eat around noon.

South Korea tours

South Korea is a country of contrasts. There are busy 21st century cities with modern skyscrapers and hi-tech factories supplying the world with the latest electronic goods, but also ancient temples, palaces, fortresses and burial mounds to discover. Similarly the concrete and glass of the cities are twinned with lush national parks, remote sandy beaches, high mountains, hot springs and tiny islands. The bustle of the country all then stops at the de-militarised zone and heavily guarded no-mans land which separates the country from North Korea.

All these contrasts make South Korea a really exciting country to visit and explore. Added to what you'll see, are a set of very friendly people and some world famous cuisine to taste, including some dishes you may find challenging with plenty of pickling and chillie heat going on.

The climate is mainly welcoming too, with four seasons through the year. The rainy season months of July and August are the hottest, with the colest months being December to February. The most popular time to visit are the spring and autumn months where the weather is generally mild and dry. Occasional typhoons can bring high winds and floods between June and September.

TOUR REVIEWS

I liked the fact we were met at the airport and helped thru customs and getting a visa and then upon leaving taken to where we needed to go. Its always tough to figure out where everything is in a foreign airport when you do not travel much Everything was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and liked that we were interested in what he was telling us. We were lucky to be in a group with like minded people who also wanted to stay in places longer of which our guide accommodated. Only negative thing was the sitting train. Best to just take the flying option. Train was not bad but has no services, no alcohol, and breakfast was all carbs and an egg. Egypt really seems to like their breads and pastries....

Trip booked through Groupon at a Great offer price - Encounters was nothing but professional from the start. I even purchased insurance - extra days and got the best flights from my local airport- Great experience

My experience with Encounters was excellent from start to finish. The Tour Guide, Sheriff, was the most passionate, enthusiastic and professional guide I have ever had on a tour and his love for Egypt really made me enjoy my time so much more. I was cautious about arriving in Egypt given the current circumstances about the country, but felt safer that I did living in London as soon as I arrived. All of the Encounters staff are very professional.

I have dealt with Anthony Horrobin on a number of occasions and it is like talking to an old friend on the phone. Anthony is super-efficient and will always go the extra mile to create the perfect trip.

When a single women in her 50's, traveling from the US to Egypt, stumbles across a website offering a tour, and then they make her feel totaling comfortable about every step of the process, you know you've hit a homerun!

Everyone has their own way to get hype before a concert, including NCT DREAM's members: Mark, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung and Renjun (who was absent from this interview).

Jisung , 22, says one of his go-to pump-up songs is " City Lights " by Avicii, while Jaemin , 23, says his playlist puts a "zen mode" before hitting the stage.

For Jeno , 24, there's usually a lot on his mind before a performance. Instead of listening to music, he tends to put on his headphones and play nothing. "I like to block all the sound out, to stay still and to empty my mind."

As part of his pre-show routine, Chenle , 22, watches interviews of late basketball player Kobe Bryant , "on every tour, before every concert."

"It gets me pumped up for the concert and ready to put on great performance," he says.

How NCT Dream relaxes after a show

Before a performance, Chenle takes precautions toward his health, including taking vitamins. Especially after a show, he uses products to prevent vocal issues and alleviate any strain since his voice gets "really hoarse."

Jeno also prioritizes his well-being on tour. "I always like to take a shower and I always make sure I use cold water at the end, especially because we're using our bodies a lot for shows and it really tires out our muscles," he says.

Haechan , 23, usually winds down by taking a warm bath and occasionally drinks some wine.

Sleep is key for the all group's members, but Jisung often find himself staying up late after a show.

"I'm on my phone all night," he says. "I want to learn how to relax."

What does NCT Dream do during downtime?

When the guys have a chance for free time on tour, they still spend it together.

"I like taking pictures. I'm not a professional, (but) I like to see the scenery and everything. Having a nice walk every once in a while is good in a different city," Mark says.

"We get to see a lot of different architecture in each city and that's another thing I like to look out for while we go out and take pictures," says Jaemin.

An avid basketball fan, Chenle keeps his sneakers on hand wherever he goes. "I've played basketball in pretty much every city we've been to so far," he says, adding how Mark usually plays pickup with him.

But each member uses his personal time-off differently.

"One of my most important essentials is my laptop so I can play games," says Haechan. "I can go outside during downtime but that makes me use up more energy. So I prefer to stay indoors … It's like me-time."

Jisung enjoys watching other K-pop artists' music videos, as well as some of the other content they have on their channels.

NCT Dream tour must-have items

Jaemin lists several must-haves for tour: wireless headphones, perfume, hydration cream, a Thai product for sinus relief, vitamins and an energy drink to name a few.

Chenle says his good luck charms for a great performance are the friendship ring that he shares with his members, plus his watch. "I have to put it on as soon as I wake up; there's like a routine," he says.

Besides his headphones, Mark's other must-have isn't tangible – it's his concentration.

"I always remember to bring myself," he says.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The Japanese and South Korean leaders raised sensitive topics like Taiwan, North Korea and the South China Sea as well as ways to boost cooperation when they individually met China’s premier Sunday on the eve of a fuller trilateral meeting.

It was unclear how serious discussions the three leaders had on those thorny issues, which are not among the official agenda items for Monday’s three-way gathering in Seoul, the first of its kind in more than four years.

No major announcement is expected from the meeting, but observers say that just resuming the highest-level talks among the three Northeast Asian neighbors is a good sign and suggests they are intent on improving relations. Their trilateral meeting was supposed to happen annually but it had stalled since the last one in December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and complex ties among the three countries.

After meeting Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that he expressed serious concerns about the situations in the South China Sea, Hong Kong and China’s northwestern Xinjiang region. He said Japan is closely monitoring developments on self-governed Taiwan.

He referred to China’s military assertiveness in the South China Sea, clampdowns of pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong and human rights abuses against minorities in Xinjiang. Last week, China also launched a large military exercise around Taiwan to show its anger over the inauguration of the island’s new president who refuses to accept its insistence that Taiwan is part of China.

During a separate meeting with Li, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, on his part, asked China, as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, to contribute to promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula, while speaking about North Korea’s nuclear program and its deepening military ties with Russia, according to Yoon’s office.

Yoon’s office said Yoon and Kishida in their separate meeting expressed worries about North Korea’s nuclear program and agreed to strengthen their cooperation with the United States.

South Korea, Japan and the U.S. have long urged China — North Korea’s major ally and economic pipeline — to use its leverage to persuade the North to abandon its nuclear ambitions. But China is suspected of avoiding fully enforcing U.N. sanctions on North Korea and sending clandestine aid shipments to help its impoverished neighbor stay afloat.

The three leaders also discussed how to bolster economic and other cooperation.

Yoon and Li agreed to launch a new South Korean-Chinese dialogue channel involving senior diplomats and defense officials in mid-June. They also agreed to restart negotiations to expand the free trade agreement and reactivate dormant bodies on personnel exchanges, investments and other issues, according to Yoon’s office.

Chinese state media reported Li told Yoon that the two countries should safeguard the stability of their deeply intertwined industrial and supply chains and resist turning economic and trade issues into political and security-related issues.

Kishida said he and Li reaffirmed Japan and China will seek progress on various areas to promote mutually beneficial relations. Kishida and Yoon also said they agreed to further strengthen ties, which have warmed significantly since last year following an earlier setback over issues related to Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean officials said that a joint statement after Monday’s trilateral meeting will cover the leaders’ discussion on cooperation in areas like people-to-people exchanges, climate change, trade, health issues, technology and disaster responses.

The three Asian nations are important trading partners and their cooperation is key to promoting regional peace and prosperity. They together make up about 25% of global gross domestic product. But the three countries have been repeatedly embroiled in bitter disputes over a range of historical and diplomatic issues originating from Japan’s wartime atrocities. China’s rise and a U.S. push reinforce its Asian alliances have also significantly impacted their three-way ties in recent years.

Experts say South Korea, China and Japan now share a need to improve ties. South Korea and Japan want better ties with China because it is their biggest trading partner. China, for its part, likely believes a further strengthening of the South Korea-Japan-U.S. cooperation would hurt its national interests.

China, meanwhile, has always sent its premier, the country’s No. 2 official, to the trilateral leaders’ meeting since its first session in 2008. Observers say China earlier argued that under then-collective leadership, its premier was chiefly in charge of economic affairs and best suited to attend the meeting, which largely focuses on economic issues.

But they say China may face more demands for President Xi Jinping to attend because he has concentrated power in his hands and defied the norms of collective leadership.

The Black Keys Quietly Cancel International Players Tour 2024

The Black Keys

The Black Keys have quietly canceled their upcoming International Players Tour, which was scheduled to bring them to arenas throughout North America.

The tour, announced in early April, was scheduled to kick off in September, with dates set for New York City’s Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. The 31-date trek would have brought them across North America, with stops planned in Seattle, Boston and Milwaukee before concluding at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on Nov. 12. All dates have been marked as canceled on Ticketmaster’s website.

Popular on Variety

Management and publicity for the Black Keys did not respond to Variety ‘s requests for comment.

After news broke on Saturday that the tour had been canceled, the group posted on Instagram explaining that they had to reconfigure their tour to bring a similarly “exciting, intimate experience” for fans and that tickets for the original trek would be refunded in full.

“The band wants to assure everyone that Dan & Patrick are alive and well,” reads the caption. “Following the recent run of shows in the UK & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly. Everyone who had purchased tickets and/or VIP to the initial tour dates will be fully refunded – and when the new plans are announced, will be the first to be able to buy tickets. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for the surprise change… We’re pretty sure everyone is going to be excited when you see what we have in mind though, and look forward to seeing everyone soon.”

The Black Keys, which consists of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, were set to kick off the tour in support of their most recent album “Ohio Players,” which released in April. On Wednesday, the pair appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” where they performed “Beautiful People (Stay High).”

The band also recently debuted the documentary “This Is a Film About the Black Keys,” which had its world premiere at SXSW last month. The film explored the historical tensions between the bandmates as well as what united them. “We’ve figured each other out, for the most part,” said Auerbach in the doc. “We’re just two very opinionated, hard-headed people, trapped for eternity together.”

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

  • Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences.
  • Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
  • Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Insider Today

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."
