What to do on Boxing Day in London

Things to do on Boxing Day in London

What to do on Boxing Day in London, 26th of December, is a question you will ask yourself if you plan to spend a few days in London over the Christmas holidays.

Attractions, shops and public transport have different opening times or may close entirely on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so it’s essential to remember this when planning your itinerary.

Due to the many questions we have received in the last few years about shops’ and attractions’ opening times in London during these dates, I have written this article to easily have this very useful information at hand.

In 2023, Boxing Day falls on a Tuesday, and it is a bank holiday in the UK. Although it’s a public holiday, many shops are open to kick off the Christmas sales, so it can almost feel like a typical day in London. Most restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions will also be open on this day.

Some tourist attractions in London close completely from December 24th to 26th, such as the Tower of London and the British Museum . Therefore, if you plan on visiting any attractions during these dates, I recommend checking the opening hours to avoid disappointment.

Things to Do in London on Boxing Day

It’s the day after Christmas, and you’re still reeling from the excitement of yesterday’s festivities. Well, you’re in luck because on Boxing Day there are plenty of activities around the city that means you can carry on the fun, so you don’t have to sit indoors for another day. From hitting up one of London’s top nightclubs to taking a brisk wintery walk around one of the city’s lush parks, here’s our guide to the top things to do in London on Boxing Day.

(WA=Wheelchair Accessible)

Empty Oxford Street in London during the holidays; visiting this shopping hub for the best deals is one of the Things to do in London on Boxing day

Hit up the Boxing Day sales

If there’s one thing Boxing Day is famous for, it’s the Boxing Day sales taking place all across the country. Many high-street stores start their sales straight after Christmas, allowing you to bag a few bargains. Although sales usually last until around mid-January, you’re best getting there as early as possible if you want to nab the good stuff. Oxford Street (pictured above) , Westfield Stratford and Shepherd’s Bush are home to the big brands.

If you prefer to support small businesses, we recommend so many great shops in our London itineraries and Casual Tourist Guides . If you prefer to k eep things second-hand, check out our article on where to go thrift shopping in London . But make sure you double-check opening times and public transport ahead of your trip, it tends to be limited on Boxing Day and trains usually run at a reduced service.

Enjoy a winter walk in one of London’s lush parks

Nothing quite beats the feeling of a crisp, wintery walk, especially on Boxing Day when there’s a festive chill in the air, and everyone is still reeling from the excitement of Christmas Day. London is full of beautiful parks filled with towering trees and lake-lined trails. Victoria Park in East London is a favourite to walk around at any time of the day, but it feels extra special on Boxing Day morning. Wander around the 2.7-mile loop and see why it was crowned as the nation’s favourite park at the People’s Choice Award. Primrose Hill (pictured above) (WA) also makes for a lush Boxing Day walk, only 10-minutes from Camden. Stroll up the hill and enjoy the sweeping views of the city skyline from above. We also love Greenwich Park (WA) for its views of Canary Wharf, Regent’s Park (WA) for its secret Japanese Garden and Richmond Park (WA) for the hundreds of red and fallow deer that roam freely.

Cosy up in a London pub

There are fewer things as quintessentially British than an old, rickety pub, and cosying up in one has to be one of the top things to do in London on Boxing Day. Take a seat near a roaring fireplace with a mug of mulled wine in hand and soak up the jolly atmosphere. The Compton Arms is an old-school boozer in Islington known for its snug atmosphere and excellent food, or hit up Queen’s Head (WA) in King’s Cross if you want to get stuck into a board game. Other favourites of ours are The Holly Bush (WA) in Hampstead, a charming pub in a backstreet in the village-like borough of Hampstead and the Churchill Arms (WA) for its magnificent display of Christmas trees and lights, a true old-school London pub. We recommend pairing your pub visit with a walk through one of London’s lovely green parks.

BTW, before you head to the pub for what might be the first time, have a watch of our guide to visiting London’s pubs.

Attend a football match

One of the top things to do in London on Boxing Day is to attend a football match, which seems to be a long-standing tradition. Not only can you watch a football match at a stadium around the UK, but there’s also a festive TV fixture schedule of live matches taking place all across the country. Come match day, you don’t want to be cramped into a tiny pub with a barely-there TV screen with a minimal view, you want to make sure you’ve nabbed the best seats in the house, and there are a few places around the city you can do just that. The Adam and Eve in Homerton is a local favourite, home to six screens and a cosy interior, or try Bar Kick in Shoreditch, where you can watch a match followed by a table football game. Other football favourites include The Moretown Belle (WA) in London Bridge, The Kings Sports Bar in Leicester Square and Long Arm Sports Pub and Brewery in Old Street.

Go to a pantomime performance

Nothing gets you into the festive spirit more than heading to a local theatre to watch a pantomime performance, which is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in London on Boxing Day. Pantomimes are light-hearted theatrical performances usually involving slapstick comedy and music. Many of the shows are based on old fairy tales or nursery rhymes we used to hear as a child, like Peter Pan , which is being shown this year at the London Palladium (WA) and Jack and the Beanstalk , which is being performed at Theatre Royal Stratford East (WA). Get comfortable and let the show unfold as you soak up the last of the Christmassy atmosphere.

Enjoy a Boxing Day lunch or dinner at a London restaurant

If you fancy one more blow-out meal before the Christmas period ends, consider heading to a restaurant to enjoy one last festive meal with loved ones. Prepare to loosen your belts another notch to make room for even more tasty treats. Mix it up and enjoy some fine-dining Chinese cuisine on the 33rd floor of The Shard at Hutong (WA) or enjoy French fare at Pont de la Tour (WA), located in a 19th-century former tea warehouse in Tower Bridge. Alternatively, keep it quintessentially British at The Flask (WA), a historic pub in the leafy borough of Highgate.

Do Tubes run on Boxing Day? How to get around London

Tube strike

It is the final countdown to Christmas and London  is – as always – a hotbed of activity.

It is the last week of work before the big day, and workers are still making their way into the office, while tourists are in the capital buying last-minute presents and soaking up the festive spirit.

Trains and the Tube are often the best way of getting around the capital. But what happens to these services during the holidays?

Read on to find out the best ways of getting out and about this  Christmas  and what will and will not be available underground.

Tube services

There will be no Tube services on Christmas Day , and no trains and no overground service at all. The only way to get around come Christmas Day is taxis, hire bikes, or walking.

On Christmas Eve, services will follow a Sunday timetable.

The Sunday service will also be in place for Boxing Day, when many of the sales start.

On Boxing Day, trains and the Tube will run from 7am all day as a Sunday service. There will be a reduced service from 8pm, and normal Sunday finish times will be in place.

There are pre-planned closures on some lines. The Bakerloo line has no service between Queen's Park and Harrow and Wealdstone, and there is no service on the Waterloo and City line.

On the District line, there will be no service to Kensington Olympia.

For full details on services running and to plan your route, visit TfL's site here.

How else can I get around on Boxing Day?

Overground trains.

On  Boxing Day , there will be no service on the Gospel Oak-Barking Riverside line, and the line that serves London Liverpool Street to Chingford/Enfield Town/Cheshunt.

There will also be no service between Highbury and Islington/Dalston Junction to Crystal Palace/West Croydon.

Bus services

Bus services will also run on a Sunday service on Boxing Day across the entire day on all routes.

There will also be a Sunday night service in operation, but there will be no night services at all in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

To plan your journey, visit here .

A Sunday service will operate on Boxing Day around the capital on trams.

Taxi and Private Hire

Taxis and private hires will be running across Christmas, but may cost more.

On Boxing Day and until 6am on Wednesday, December 27, black cabs will charge an extra £4 per journey and there could be an extra charge for private hire vehicles, including minicabs. Those wanting to travel via these means are urged to check with individual companies.

The first train to depart anywhere in the UK for more than 24 hours left London Victoria just after 5am, destination Clapham Junction, East Croydon and Gatwick airport.

Soon afterwards, another link aimed at airline passengers started up – between Stansted airport in Essex and Tottenham Hale in north London. The normal terminus in the capital, Liverpool Street, is closed for the day – along with most other major stations across the UK.

A handful of other services are running in England, mainly to, from and within London: from Victoria to Brighton plus some local South London trains; between Marylebone and Oxford; and Clapham Junction to Stratford on the London Overground.

In the Liverpool area, Merseyrail is running a “special service for some stations” including Aintree for the Boxing Day race meeting.

Despite a full football programme running – with matches including Manchester United against Birmingham team Aston Villa, and Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest – no long-distance links are running.

The only significant intercity service is between London St Pancras International and Continental Europe.

Starting at 8am, Eurostar is running a comprehensive service of 13 departures to Paris and eight to Brussels, with three continuing to Amsterdam via Rotterdam.

But connecting travel at St Pancras is difficult. While the London Underground is open, no East Midlands Railway, Southeastern or Thameslink trains are operating.

No rail services are running in Wales or Northern Ireland. The one nation with a significantly expanded Boxing Day rail service is Scotland.

Traditionally services in Scotland on Boxing Day have been restricted to a very small number, mainly in the Glasgow area.

On 26 December 2023, though, trains will also run to and from Perth, Dunblane and Glenrothes, and between Bathgate and Edinburgh.

Between the Scottish capital and Glasgow, passengers will have a choice of four trains per hour.

Alex Hynes, managing director of Scotland’s Railway, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “We’re operating our biggest Boxing Day service for many years. Thank you to everyone at ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland who will be working.”

In a social media poll on X, a clear majority of respondents voted in favour of restoring more trains on 26 December .

With more than 5,000 votes in so far, 57 per cent say the UK should emulate Continental Europe – where most countries run a near-normal service through the festive season – and operate a coherent rail network on 26 December.

Almost three out of 10 (29 per cent) say that trains should also run on Christmas Day. But over one-third (36 per cent) believe staff should have the day off.

Just seven per cent believe there is no demand for Boxing Day trains.

Long-distance coach operators – National Express , Flixbus and Megabus – are running near-normal services.

Cross-Channel ferry services have resumed from Dover to Calais and Dunkirk after the 25 December closedown.

12 Boxing Day Walks In And Around London

12 Boxing Day Walks In And Around London

Epping forest, essex.

Once home to a royal hunting ground in Tudor times, Epping Forest straddles the border between London and Essex, with more than 6,000 acres of vast woodland and bursting with wildlife. It’s a great choice for a Boxing Day walk as the woodland area looks beautiful on a cold, crisp day. There are a few routes to follow, but one of the most scenic has to be the Oak Trail which starts at Theydon Bois underground station. From there, the signposted route is easy to follow and passes through beautiful surroundings, including fields, babblings brooks and a deer sanctuary.    Visit VisitEppingForest.org

Hascombe Hill, Surrey

Hascombe Hill in Surrey is a 90-minute drive from London, but its postcard views are well worth the journey. There are a few routes to take in the dense woodland area, but one of the prettiest is the Hascombe Hill Circular trail. The signposted 4.2km loop starts at Log Bench, before continuing towards Hill Corner. There are several places to stop where you’ll be able to see as far as the South Downs, but for some of the best views, look out for the sculptural seating along the path. Hascombe Hill is a great place for dogs, so be sure to bring your four-legged friend along, too.    Visit AllTrails.co.uk

Chiltern Hills, Buckinghamshire

If you’re after a more challenging trail, head to the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire. Just over an hour’s drive from London, the area is home to one of the most stunning vistas in the south east, which looks particularly beautiful during the winter. For a crisp Boxing Day walk that can be completed in a few hours, follow the trail from Rickmansworth to Chesham. Look out for historical ruins along the way, as well as local wildlife such as water voles and robins.   Visit VisitChilterns.co.uk

Hatchlands Park, Surrey

Just over an hour’s drive from London, Hatchlands Park is a beautiful National Trust property in Guildford. Although the manor house is currently closed, you can still head on a lovely Boxing Day walk around the 400 acres of rolling parkland and woodland. There are three main walking routes to choose from, but one of the best is the Wix Wood walk which takes an hour to complete. Along the route, there’s a children’s adventure area and a beautiful bluebell valley. Follow the signposts and watch out for roaming cows along the way.

Visit NationalTrust.org

Hascombe Hill

Petworth Park, West Sussex

Petwork Park is a little further afield, but it’s well worth the journey if you want a longer Boxing Day walk. With 700 acres of woodland and lush lawns to explore, a lovely walking route to take is the Petworth Circular Trail. The trail, which is clearly marked, passes beautiful views of the South Downs and one of the largest deer parks in England. At the end of the circular walk, you’ll pass the historic Petworth House, (a stunning 17th-century Grade I listed country property). If you’ve got little ones in tow, they can follow a Peter Rabbit activity trail around the estate to find Peter and his friends.    Visit NationalTrust.org

Bourne Wood, Surrey

Bourne Wood is a huge open heathland in Farnham, Surrey. The wood is also an iconic filming location, where scenes from Gladiator , Robin Hood and the Harry Potter series were filmed. Once you’ve made the 90-minute drive from London, set out on one of the walking trails for a leisurely Boxing Day stroll. The routes aren’t waymarked, but the paths are clear. Bourne Wood looks especially majestic in the morning, so set off early for a beautiful frosty walk.    Visit ForestryEngland.uk

Greys Court, Oxfordshire

Located near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, Greys Court has some of the most picturesque view in the south east. Visitors can appreciate the National Trust property bedecked in Christmas decorations, before heading on a scenic walk around the gardens, which will be open to visitors on Boxing Day. Walk around the impressive gardens, or for a longer route, continue to the Chiltern Hills, just a short drive away.    Visit NationalTrust.org

Box Hill, Surrey

Explore the Surrey Hills on a walking tour of Box Hill. Forming part of the North Downs, the historic area can be reached in just over an hour’s drive from London. Head to the hills on Boxing Day morning and follow the Hilltop Stroll – an easy route than can be completed in 30 minutes. At the top, you’ll see panoramic views of the hills where you can stop for a takeaway drink at the small indoor café. Box Hill is particularly popular with dog walkers, so make it a family affair and bring your pup along, too.   Visit NationalTrust.org

Leith Hill

Blackheath Common, London

Just a short distance from Greenwich Park, Blackheath Common is a beautiful green space in south east London. The area, which dates back to the middle ages, is steeped in history, but today, it’s a World Heritage Site. From Point Hill, you can spot parts of Essex and Kent in the distance, and there are a number of vantage points which run along the Thames, too. There isn’t a set trail to follow, so it’s best to do a bit of exploring.    Visit RoyalGreenwich.co.uk

Leith Hill, Surrey

Located in the picturesque town of Dorking in Surrey, Leith Hill has a great selection of walking routes for those looking for a country stroll. There are several routes to choose from, but one of our favourites is the Woodland Trail, which takes around two hours to complete. It’s quite steep in parts, so it’s best to wear proper walking shoes. If you’re up for a challenge, make an afternoon of it and climb the 78 steps of  Leith Hill Tower  for a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.    Visit NationalTrust.co.uk

Richmond Park, London

Once a deer hunting park in the 17th century, Richmond Park is London’s largest royal green space. For a scenic route the whole family will enjoy, Richmond Park to Ham House is a circular walk that takes around 90 minutes to complete – passing through Pembroke Lodge Gardens and Petersham Meadows, there are plenty of scenic stops along the way. For a longer walk, follow the Tamsin Trail, a guided perimeter of the park which can be completed in four hours.    Visit RoyalParks.org

Hampstead Heath, London

For a brisk Boxing Day walk, there are several walking routes to take on Hampstead Heath, but the Hampstead Heath Circular Trail has the best scenery. Starting at Parliament Hill, follow the path past the ponds to Millfield Lane. From there, the route continues to Poets Lane (named after Coleridge and Keats who frequented the area), Kenwood House, and the ancient Wylde Wood. Via Golders Hill Park, make your way to the summit of Hampstead Heath, before finishing at Pryors Field. The trail is popular with families, so head here on Boxing Day morning to avoid the crowds.

Public Transport in London over Christmas and New Year

Here’s a handy guide to service disruptions and reduced transport timetables in London across the festive season

Isabelle Aron

Travelling at Christmas is NOT easy. The festive period always needs that bit of extra planning in London, especially as you’ve got to see one grandma in Essex and another in Yorkshire before the New Year. So we’ve made it easy for you. Here’s what  TfL , the Underground, buses, trams, trains and the Overground are up to this Christmas and New Year.

Is public transport running in London over Christmas?

The answer is sort of yes and no. Between Friday December 22 and Tuesday January 2, there’s planned work, closures and service changes on the network, so make sure you check before you travel.

On Christmas Eve, for example (December 24 falls on a Sunday this year), services will finish earlier than normal across the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Elizabeth line, London Overground and London trams. This normally means things close around 9pm, but it tends to start being a reduced service from around 7pm. There are also no night bus services on Christmas Eve, so don’t stay in the pub too long and get caught out in the (possibly) rain.

When are the train strikes over the Christmas period?

There haven’t been any announcements about planned strike action on the network over the Christmas period... yet. But, if the past year is anything to go by keep your eyes peeled and be prepared for your travel plans to change. Check back for updates.

Is public transport running on Christmas Day?

Everything  stops running on Christmas Day: the tube, buses, TfL Rail, DLR, Overground, trams, river buses, the cable cars and National Rail. The only transport available will be taxis, private hires and Dial-a-Ride. But you can still grab a Santander bike or an electric scooter in the boroughs that have them.

If you’re driving, note that the Ultra Low Emission Zone won’t operate on Christmas Day, and the Congestion Charge won’t operate from Christmas Day to January 2.

Are trains, tubes and buses running on Boxing Day?

Tube services resume on Boxing Day, but a chunk of it will still be closed. Buses will also start running from about 5.30am (so you can hit up those Boxing Day sales). The tube and Overground should open at 7am, but parts of the Elizabeth line will be shut that day along with parts of the Overground, so definitely check before you travel.

Most trains are not running on Boxing Day, with only a select number of airport transfer train services running, like the Stansted Express and Heathrow Express. Network Rail also uses the Christmas period to carry out a lot of its engineering works, so make sure you check back for any announcements.

Here’s the full list of London bus timetable changes for Christmas 2023, including Boxing Day .

What services are running on New Year’s Eve?

Last year, TfL ran the Night Tube on New Year’s Eve, so that partiers all over the city could get home safe (but you couldn’t beep in for free like previous years, sad face). We’re hoping it’s going to be the same this year, so check back for updates.

Keep in the know with TfL’s updates here .

Sounds like a lovely way to spend boxing day.

As long as you have the right time tables you'll be fine. They'll always be a way back though.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Abbey_Road_DLR_Station_Beatles_Sign.jpg

😂😂 Only in the UK would you see an Official sign like that!

Maybe they should just arrange for a similar zebra crossing to be painted there.

The mischievous side of me thinks they should decorate that station with Beatles album artwork. Help! might be a good choice.

That's a great sign - hadn't seen that before!

You won't have any trouble doing the other things in your plans.

Mike Tyson ‘doing great’ after falling ill during weekend flight from Miami to Los Angeles

L OS ANGELES (AP) — Mike Tyson was recovering Monday after falling ill a day earlier during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, his representatives said.

The 58-year-old boxing legend “became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare up 30 minutes before landing” on Sunday, his publicist’s office said in a statement.

“Thankfully Mr. Tyson is doing great,” the statement said. “He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him.”

American Airlines flight 1815 was met by first responders upon landing at LA International Airport “due to the medical needs of a customer,” an airline statement said.

Tyson is preparing to fight the 27-year-old social media star-turned-boxer Jake Paul this summer at the 80,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys. Netflix will carry the fight live, a first for the streaming platform.

Tyson was the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. He retired in 2005, but most recently fought in an exhibition in November 2020 against Roy Jones in California.

Primary school wants to ban skirts because pupils wear them ‘too short’

primary school in devon looking to ban skirts

Pupils at a primary school in Cornwall could soon be forced to wear trousers or tailored shorts because of a proposed ban on skirts.

Newquay Junior Academy in Newquay, wrote a letter to parents asking their views and would look to implement the new rule from September.

The school is part of Cornwall Education Learning Trust and executive head teacher Craig Hayes wrote to parents: ‘The proposed change is that there will no longer be an option to wear skirts within our uniform policy.

‘Instead, we are proposing that instead of a skirt, pupils will all wear either tailored black school trousers or tailored black school shorts.

‘The rationale for this, is that we are concerned about the way that some of our girls are wearing their skirts, and this is reflected in comments from many of you, as parents and carers, but also from visitors and our community.’

The letter added: ‘Some skirts are just too short, and the length is difficult to rectify and/or monitor.

‘The length of the skirt is not in line with school uniform, and we are at a point now where this must be addressed.

‘As such, we are reviewing the wearing of skirts for September 2024 and considering a move to trousers for all.’

Cropped image of school kids in uniform walking together in a row through corridor. Focus on legs of students walking through school hallway.

The letter does go on to address the controversy around the situaion.

It says: ‘We want our pupils to express their individuality through their beliefs, passions, talents, and minds and not through their clothing and image.

‘We all know that, unfortunately, some feel pressure to customise their uniform in a way that we know none of us would encourage.

‘Our pupils deserve to attend an academy where they feel safe and can thrive and where all are treated fairly.

‘Academy uniform creates an inclusive atmosphere because it does not differentiate pupils by background. We believe that a uniform worn without modification is the best way to ensure equality.

‘We do not want pupils feeling vulnerable and stressed by the pressure they feel to wear the latest trend or status symbol.’

The school said it will make its final decision after the May half term.

But one mum said: ‘It seems ridiculous that girls have no dress or pinafore option and to be asked to dress in a uniform that will make some girls feel uncomfortable/not themselves.

‘Young girls especially in the junior school are suffering because teachers can’t handle the discipline it takes to teach kids to roll down their skirt. It is unfair and a blanket ban on skirts seems crazy.’

Launceston College in Cornwall planned a skirt ban in March but this was scrapped following a backlash from parents.

Cornwall Education Learning Trust has been contacted for additional comment.
