Puerto Vallarta at a Glance

Nestled on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is a captivating blend of natural beauty and rich culture.

With its sun-kissed beaches, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culinary scene, it’s one of the most unique places to visit in Mexico for foreigners and locals alike.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust!

Airport: PVR – Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport

Time Zone: Central Standard Time

Currency: Mexican Peso (credit cards accepted)

Language: Spanish, but English is common (you don’t need to know Spanish to visit)

Electric sockets & plugs: they use Type A (two-prong) and Type B (three-prong) – if you’re traveling with lots of electronics, bring a small powerstrip because most hotel rooms do not have enough outlets.

Getting around: Taxis, Ubers and local buses are all fine to use.

Top food to try: Tacos al Pastor

Top activity: Hidden beach at Marietas Islands

Where is Puerto Vallarta Located?

Puerto Vallarta can be found on the western coast of Mexico, right along the beautiful shores of the Pacific Ocean, as you can see in the map above.

It’s in the state of Jalisco, which is kind of like a Mexican version of a “state” in the U.S.

When you look at it on the map, it’s right in the middle of the Bahia de Banderas, or Banderas Bay.

How to Get There

travel guide puerto vallarta

Most major airlines fly directly into the Puerto Vallarta airport, named Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport.

The airport code is PVR so you can search easily for flights.

One of the best things about arriving in Puerto Vallarta is that the airport is in the city.

It’s located very close to the Marina and hotel zone, which are only about a 10 minute drive away.

To get to downtown neighborhoods (like centro and zona romantica), you’re only a 20 minute drive form the airport.

Here are flight times from some popular cities:

Los Angeles: 3 hours

Vancouver : 4 hours, 30 minutes

Calgary : 4.5 hours

Toronto : 5 hours

Phoenix : 2.5 hours

New York City: 5 Hours

Cancun: 5 hours

What’s the Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta?

travel guide puerto vallarta

November to April – high season

November to April is the time to visit Puerto Vallarta, when the temperatures are mild, and the humidity and mosquitoes are at bay.

You’ll find many American, Canadian and European travelers visit during this time.

A huge reason to visit at this time of year is because of the annual whale migration in Mexico.

From January to March, magnificent species like Pacific gray, humpback, orcas, and others gracefully traverse the Pacific coast of Mexico as they make their way to their breeding grounds.

Here are more details about what you can expect if you’re visiting in February , for example.

May & June – shoulder season

Many people still visit in May and June, which is considered shoulder season and the beginning of off-season.

It can be a great time to visit because the winter crowds have thinned out and hotel prices are a little cheaper.

The weather gets hot, but it’s not at its peak humidity yet.

You’ll also notice a lot more Mexican citizens start to travel and take holidays.

July to October – off season

July through October is the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta and it gets extremely humid.

However, it’s usually sunny during the day or at least until mid afternoon, and then it usually rains every evening.

Many restaurants in the ‘touristy’ areas shut down for the month of September, so I do not recommend visiting during that month.

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta (neighborhood guide)

travel guide puerto vallarta

For easy navigating and holiday planning, Puerto Vallarta is split into different zones, which all have their own features.

Starting from North to South, here is a summary of all the zones & why you might want to consider staying there.

North Zone (Zona Norte)

travel guide puerto vallarta

Starting about 30 minutes north of the airport and beyond, you’ll find small towns and secluded resorts.

Quiet and serene, this zone offers a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle, with secluded beaches and charming fishing villages.

This actually stretches into the next state, called Nayarit.

Stay here if you crave a serene getaway, surrounded by untouched beaches and quaint fishing villages, far from the bustling tourist crowds.

I recommend visiting Bucerias or La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Nuevo Vallarta

A bit north of Puerto Vallarta, this upscale area is renowned for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and water adventures, perfect for travelers seeking an opulent beachfront experience.

Stay here if you’re looking for an opulent beachfront escape with luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, and a taste of upscale coastal living.

Marina Vallarta

travel guide puerto vallarta

A paradise for golf enthusiasts and water sports lovers, this zone boasts a tranquil atmosphere, luxury resorts, and a picturesque marina with fine dining options.

Marina Vallarta, stay here if you’re a golf enthusiast or enjoy watersports, as it offers a tranquil atmosphere, luxury resorts, and a picturesque marina with fine dining options.

Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)

Perfect for beach lovers, this zone offers a plethora of beachfront resorts, water activities, and stunning views of Banderas Bay.

Stay here if you want beachfront resorts and being perfectly in the middle of the airport and downtown.

Downtown (El Centro)

travel guide puerto vallarta

This bustling area is known for its vibrant nightlife, historic charm, and a wide range of dining options, making it perfect for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the local culture.

Stay here if you want to experience Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant nightlife, soak up its historic charm, and savor a diverse range of dining options, all while immersing yourself in the local culture.

Romantic Zone (Zona Romántica)

travel guide puerto vallarta

Famous for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and LGBTQ-friendly scene, this area is ideal for travelers seeking a blend of relaxation and excitement.

Stay here for a blend of locals and tourists, old world architecture, a huge concentration of bars and the LGBTQ-friendly scene.

Here are my top 5 favorite (and affordable) hotels in the Zona Romantica .

Nestled between the beach and downtown, Amapas is a peaceful neighborhood, perfect for travelers looking to enjoy both serene surroundings and easy access to Puerto Vallarta’s lively attractions.

Conchas Chinas

Perched on the hillsides, Conchas Chinas offers upscale villas with breathtaking ocean views, making it a haven for those seeking luxurious tranquility.

South Zone (Zona Sur)

Nature enthusiasts will find solace in this lush area, known for its pristine beaches, tropical forests, and opportunities for hiking and eco-tourism.

stay here if you’re a nature-enthusiast seeking pristine beaches, tropical forests, and opportunities for hiking and eco-tourism.

Is Puerto Vallarta Safe for Travelers?

travel guide puerto vallarta

While no destination is entirely without risk, Puerto Vallarta maintains a reputation as a safe haven for tourists.

For first-time visitors to Puerto Vallarta, especially those new to Mexico, the city generally offers a safe and welcoming environment.

It’s a popular tourist destination with a strong focus on visitor safety.

The city center and tourist areas are well-patrolled, and violent crime against tourists is relatively rare.

However, like any tourist destination, it’s essential to take standard precautions:

  • be mindful of your belongings
  • avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas at night
  • use reputable transportation services

Like any city, there are some scams that visitors need to be aware of, which I discuss in my article here .

By staying aware and following common-sense guidelines, your visit to Puerto Vallarta is likely to be a safe and enjoyable experience.

I go in-depth about safety in Puerto Vallarta in my video here .

General Puerto Vallarta Travel Tips

After over 20 visits to Puerto Vallarta, I’ve made a list of some random travel tips that are helpful to know.

Greetings and Manners

It’s very common for locals to greet you and say hello, whether you’re passing them in the streets or at the resorts.

They’re just very friendly people! Don’t be afraid to smile and meet them with a greeting such as:

  • Hola: hello
  • Buenos dias: good morning
  • Buenos tardes: good afternoon
  • Buenas noches: good evening or goodnight
  • Por favor: please
  • Gracias: thank you

Haggling Culture

travel guide puerto vallarta

One of my favorite things to do is browse all the markets for handicrafts and other handmade souvenirs and trinkets.

If you’re looking at an item that doesn’t have a price, it’s very common to negotiate to come to an agreement on price. This is normal and expected!

I suggest asking them to name their price, and then off about 50% less. Usually you can meet in the middle and come to an agreement for a price of 65 to 75% of the original asking price.

And remember, if it’s not a price you’re comfortable paying, it’s perfectly acceptable to say thank you and walk away.

(they might even offer you a lower price at this point).

Street Food & Tacos

travel guide puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s food culture is all about tacos and street food.

You can’t visit this city without trying at least a few dishes.

First, if you’ve never tried street food (or traditional Mexican tacos for that matter), book a walking street food tour at the beginning of your trip!

Then, you can go back and visit all your favorite spots and have the confidence to branch out and try other places.

I also have a list of my favorite taco sta nds in Puerto Vallarta.

travel guide puerto vallarta

Also, meal times in Puerto Vallarta are a little different than what you might be used to in the USA or Canada.

While restaurants will always be open at traditional meal times, you might be wondering why some places are completely empty or packed at odd times.

Mexicans traditionally have a ‘first breakfast’ which is usually coffee and a light pastry. This is early, around 7 or 8am.

Then, around 10 am they have a second breakfast which is a little heavier, and is usually something like Birria tacos.

Then lunch is usually eaten around 1 or 2pm, and usually something like tacos, tostadas or tortas.

And dinner isn’t usually eaten until 7:30 or 8pm and even much later.

Your Trip to Puerto Vallarta: The Complete Guide

travel guide puerto vallarta

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast in the northwest corner of the state of Jalisco , Puerto Vallarta rings Mexico's largest natural bay, the Bahia de Banderas (Bay of Flags). This popular beach resort area is one of the main ports of call for Mexican Riviera cruises, has a well-deserved reputation as a foodie destination, and is also home to a wide variety of natural and cultural attractions.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : December through March is the best time, with excellent weather and fun activities including opportunities for whale watching.

Language: The most spoken language is Spanish, although many people working in the tourism industry speak English, and some of the indigenous people may speak Nahuatl or Huichol.

Currency: The local currency is the Mexican peso. Some upscale establishments offering goods and services to tourists list prices in US dollars and the symbol ($) is the same as the dollar sign, so if there's any doubt, enquire what currency prices are listed in.

Getting Around: Both taxis and Ubers are plentiful and economical, and public buses are convenient for longer journeys, and in town can be a good option for budget travelers.

Travel Tip: The best time to visit is also the most crowded (especially during holidays such as Christmas and Easter). For good weather and fewer crowds, visit in October and November or April and May.

In Puerto Vallarta, you can take it easy on the beach or fill your days exploring the city's historic center, given Cultural Heritage status by the state of Jalisco —it's entirely up to you. Either way, you’ll want to enjoy the city’s outstanding food scene wherever you go. Here are a few activities to enjoy:

  • Take a stroll along the Malecon to see the collection of sculptures. In the evenings, buskers here entertain passers-by.
  • Enjoy Puerto Vallarta's many beaches , eight of which are Blue Flag-certified . Check out a beach club such as Mantamar Beach Club where you can soak in the hip, upbeat vibe, or visit some of the best beaches located to the south of the city, many which are only accessible by sea.
  • Make a visit to Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden , where you can discover the exuberant flora and fauna of the area and take a dip in the Horcones River.
  • Go shopping for local art and handicrafts, such as the beadwork of the Huichol indigenous people, or hit the mall for some window shopping.
  • Get an adrenaline rush on an extreme adventure like riding an ATV or zip-lining through the Sierra Madre.
  • Treat yourself to a spa treatment at one of Puerto Vallarta’s excellent spas .
  • In the evening, find a spot on the Malecón or a beachside restaurant to enjoy Puerto Vallarta's beautiful sunsets.

What to Eat and Drink

Puerto Vallarta is well known as a foodie destination in Mexico , with its annual gourmet festival steadily gaining recognition internationally. Whether it’s at a street food stand selling tacos al pastor , a beachside palapa restaurant offering up the catch of the day, or a fine dining establishment serving haute cuisine, Puerto Vallarta offers some of the best food experiences you’ll find anywhere. Take a street food tour to discover all the wonderful street food and low-key dining options, or enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta's upscale restaurants like Café des Artistes or Trio .

When it comes to drink, Puerto Vallarta also has a lot to offer. It’s located in the state of Jalisco, just about four hours drive from the town of Tequila , so you’ll find many opportunities to sample this popular Mexican spirit—and there are even some places where you can see how it’s made. Another drink that is also made from the agave plant but has only recently gained popularity is raicilla, known by many as “Mexican moonshine,” it has recently been legalized. Puerto Vallarta's craft beer scene is gaining ground, and you can try some of the locally produced brews at Los Muertos Brewing or La Cerveceria Union . And of course at any of the many bars and nightclubs you'll find all the standard international drinks as well.

Check out some of our favorite Puerto Vallarta restaurants .

Where to Stay

There are a great many choices of hotels and resorts in Puerto Vallarta, in all price ranges and for all tastes. Some popular choices for both couples and families include the large resorts Marriott Puerto Vallarta and The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta . For an adult-only boutique stay, consider Casa Velas near the Marina, or Villa Premiere in the center of town. Fans of old Hollywood may want to book a stay at Hotel Rosita , where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed while filming "The Night of the Iguana." Airbnbs are becoming more common, and can be a good choice for families. Budget travelers have been flocking to the well-located Posada de Roger for decades.

Check out our recommendations for the best Puerto Vallarta hotels .

Getting There

The most common way to get to Puerto Vallarta is by air, arriving at Puerto Vallarta's Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (airport code PVR). There are also many visitors who arrive on cruise ships, as Puerto Vallarta is a popular port of call for cruises of the Mexican Riviera. Cruise ships dock at the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal, which can accommodate three full-size cruise ships. If coming by land, travelers can get to Puerto Vallarta from Guadalajara by bus in under five hours. The bus line ETN offers first-class service.

Culture and Customs

There are a few cultural differences and customs that you should be aware of in Puerto Vallarta. One thing that you may notice is timeshare salespeople and vendors who may come across as excessively pushy and aggressive when trying to get your attention. This is something that Mexicans and frequent visitors get used to and learn to block out. Here are some strategies you can use for dealing with pushy vendors .

Mexican mealtimes may be on a different schedule from what you're used to, with the main meal of the day taken in the afternoon between 2 and 4 p.m. In restaurants, the server will not bring you the bill until you request it. Ask for “ la cuenta, por favor, ” or make a sign of writing in the air. Usually the tip (“ propina ” in Spanish) is not included, and you should add 10 to 20 percent depending on the quality of service. Tipping is customary in bars and restaurants, but not so much in food stalls and markets (though always appreciated). It's also customary to tip bellhops and cleaning staff at your hotel.

Money Saving Tips

There’s no need to break the bank on a trip to Puerto Vallarta. If you stick to a budget hotel or Airbnb, ride city buses, eat at economical restaurants and street food stands, and avoid taking high priced tours, you’ll find it can be a very inexpensive destination. Here are some other things you can do to save money:

  • Have a large breakfast, which is usually the cheapest meal of the day, then for a late lunch opt for a multi-course " comida corrida " fixed price meal. In the evening, a couple of tacos or other inexpensive street eats will suffice.
  • Find alternative transportation methods. For example, the water taxi from the Los Muertos pier to the beaches south of Puerto Vallarta can be pretty pricey, but you can cut the cost in half if you take the city bus to Boca de Tomatlan and get a boat from there.
  • There are plenty of free things to do in Puerto Vallarta. Strolling along the Malecón you’ll see art and will likely run into some performance to watch. The vast majority of the beaches are public and you can enjoy them without any cost if you bring whatever you need with you.
  • Instead of buying drinks at restaurants or bars, head to a local store to buy your water or cold cervezas, you'll find they cost a fraction of the price, and you can find a nice spot to enjoy them on the beach or in your hotel.
  • The main nightly show, the sunset, is free for all and a wonderful way to enjoy Puerto Vallarta.

El Malecón El Malecón free

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you're hoping to book accommodations within walking distance of El Malecón, be selective when choosing a hotel or all-inclusive resort. Many properties are situated along the main pedestrian stretch, whereas some resorts require at least a 20-minute cab ride to get back and forth. – Holly D. Johnson

Stretching approximately 12 city blocks along Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), El Malecón is a great place to stroll any time of day, but especially in the evenings. Along the way, visitors will see everything from sand sculptures and bronze sculptures to the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe . El Malecón is also home to the open-air Los Arcos Amphitheater, another iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta that plays host to free performances, featuring live musicians and traditional Mexican dance troupes, just about every night.

Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) free

This charming south side neighborhood is like a detached, unpretentious beach village that serves PV's more laid-back and less resort-conscious tourists. It's also the center of the city's thriving gay scene and has a bevy of gay beaches, bars and restaurants lining Olas Atlas. Travelers should keep in mind that this area is also known as Old Vallarta or Old Town.

Most agree that Zona Romantica is a must-see. The area contains a number of the city's best restaurants, excellent cultural opportunities and the most popular beach in the city: Los Muertos Beach. It's also home to a pier built in 2013 that offers seating for pedestrians and illuminates each evening with a kaleidoscope of colors. From the pier, travelers can board water taxis to some of the area's more secluded beaches. Recent travelers said you'll find a bunch of smaller grocery stores, restaurants and cafes away from the beach, as well as fewer peddlers selling souvenirs. Lázaro Cardenas Park (also known as Tile Park) is another popular stop here thanks to the colorful mosaics adorning the benches, columns and planters.

Bucerías Bucerías free

A great place to experience the joys of a resort town without the tourist-palooza that is Puerto Vallarta, the small fishing village of Bucerías is steadily becoming a popular day trip for PV vacationers. If you have the time to spare, take a bus to this beach hideaway up the coastline for an afternoon of fishing or swimming.

Recent visitors recommend spending Thursday evenings (November to April) doing the Bucerías Art Walk, a self-guided tour of more than a dozen galleries and arts boutiques. The Bucerias Bike and Food Tour is also highly rated because it visits several local eateries with a local guide leading the way. Beachside dining at places like Mar y Sol also comes highly recommended. If you're looking for a place off the tourist track, Bucerias is your secluded oasis.

Playa de los Muertos Playa de los Muertos free

The most popular shoreline in Puerto Vallarta, Playa de los Muertos (Deadmen's Beach) in the  Zona Romantica , offers opportunities to Jet Ski, windsurf and even parasail, as well as an assortment of excellent restaurants and bars. Try out some of the land sports as well, such as beach volleyball, which can be equally fun but cheaper than the water sports.

Travelers generally say that Playa de los Muertos is a nice area with plenty of space and a great spot for people-watching. Visitors also note that, unlike elsewhere in the Zona Romantica, beachside peddlers can be particularly aggressive when selling small items to tourists. A simple " no, gracias " should allow you to avoid any haggling. Because of the high concentration of gay-friendly accommodations along the southern shore, Playa de los Muertos is also considered a party haven for PV's LGBTQ travelers. A few travelers warned of the beach's strong current, advising parents with children to take extra precautions when swimming.

Puerto Vallarta Food Tours Puerto Vallarta Food Tours

If you're looking for a break from sunbathing and enjoying umbrella-garnished drinks on the beach, consider signing up for one of the best Puerto Vallarta food tours. While you can always head into town to try fresh local seafood, tacos and an array of Mexican desserts on your own, booking a tour with a company like Vallarta Food Tours , Vallarta Eats Food Tours  or ChocoMuseo can make the experience more festive and fun while paving the way to even more adventurous culinary options.

All foodie tours in Puerto Vallarta are led by savvy locals eager to share their expertise with curious visitors, and you may be surprised at the delicacies you can try. For example, Vallarta Food Tours offers downtown PV tasting tours that let you nosh on regional dishes like tacos, birria (meat stew), seafood and mole, but they also offer specialized tours geared to vegans or seafood lovers. There are also spirit-focused tours that allow participants to sample several different types of local tequila, mezcal or craft beer.

Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours

U.S. News Insider Tip : Book a tour for one of the first days of your trip. Whale-watching tours in PV frequently get canceled due to choppy seas or lack of local whales. Booking early in your vacation gives you a chance to try another day if your first tour doesn't pan out.– Holly D. Johnson

Spotting a humpback whale as it crests the surface of the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight, and Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places to do just that. Whale watching season runs from early December through March, when humpback whales congregate in the sheltered, warm waters of Puerto Vallarta's Banderas Bay to have their babies. The peak of whale watching season is between January and February. And although you can bring your binoculars and look for whales from the shore – try the Malecón – your best chance for seeing them up close is aboard a tour operator's boat.

Yelapa Yelapa

For a break from the tourist crowds of Puerto Vallarta, head about 20 miles south to Yelapa. Considered by travel experts to be one of Mexico's few "undiscovered" beach towns, Yelapa is only reachable by boat, which is part of the reason why it sees relatively fewer travelers than other popular areas along Bahía de Banderas.

Many travelers come to Yelapa for its unspoiled beach, but if you're looking for a little more adventure, you won't be disappointed. There's a waterfall not too far from town that you can reach via a paved walking path. Recent visitors suggested swimming in the pool beneath the waterfall, praising the clean, refreshing waters. Because of the paved path and short hike, many said it was suitable for children. However, a few visitors were disappointed with the unimpressive size of the falls.

Playa Palmares Playa Palmares free

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you don't want to navigate the bus routes in Puerto Vallarta, consider downloading the Uber app before your trip. You can easily order an Uber from nearly anywhere in and outside the city for convenience, and for less than you would pay for a taxi. – Holly D. Johnson

This beach is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its clean sand and clear water. Situated about 3 miles south of the Romantic Zone , Playa Palmares is Blue Flag certified, meaning it offers a high standard of cleanliness, safety, water quality and accessibility.

Playa Las Animas Playa Las Animas free

This beautiful beach just south of Puerto Vallarta makes for a lovely day trip, according to past visitors. Best accessed via water taxi, Playa Las Animas offers a stunning shoreline, calm waters and restaurants dishing out tasty food. Plus, recent visitors report that this stretch of sand is less crowded than other popular beaches like Playa de los Muertos (as long as you arrive in the morning).

When you're not sunbathing or enjoying a tropical drink, you can also rent a variety of water sports equipment, including kayaks, or sign up for a parasailing adventure or banana boat ride with one of the outfitters headquartered at the beach. This beach is also home to the Las Animas Beach Adventure Park, which offers zip lining, canopy tours and other adventure activities just steps from the ocean.

Vallarta Botanical Gardens Vallarta Botanical Gardens

To explore beyond Puerto Vallarta, you might want to try the popular Jardín Botánico Vallarta (Vallarta Botanical Gardens). The gardens feature an assortment of wildflowers, including orchids, and insect life that provides a relaxing and romantic getaway from the day-to-day hustle of Vallarta's downtown.

Some travelers expected to spend one or two hours walking around the gardens, but ended up staying the entire day since along with enjoying the magnificent plant life, you can also boulder the jungle's rocks and swim a section of the river. Some reviewers only recommend these activities for fit travelers. Also, be sure to buy a meal or, at the very least, a drink at the on-site restaurant, which comes highly recommended by both travelers and experts. If you plan to hike, you'll want to bring insect repellent (it's also available to purchase on-site) and consider wearing long sleeves and pants.

Los Arcos National Marine Park Los Arcos National Marine Park

Los Arcos National Marine Park is an iconic natural area that sits just 20 minutes south of the main square in downtown Puerto Vallarta. This park is protected from agricultural and developments and new construction, so it's become a haven for a range of bird species as well as sea life, including tropical fish.

Visitors here can take advantage of a range of adventure activities in and out of the water, including diving, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling and more. There are also guided tours you can book that include transportation and entry into the marine park, some of which include Jet Ski rides or snorkeling. Tickets for snorkeling tours start at about $50; Jet Ski tours start at about $145 per person.

Mirador de La Cruz Mirador de La Cruz free

Mirador de La Cruz is a lookout that offers spectacular views of the city of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas. While frequently referred to as a "hike," visitors can get to this lookout with a walk uphill and a set of stairs. There is also a funicular that travelers can ride when it's working, but you may not want to plan on using it since it is often out of service (according to recent travelers). Either way, Mirador de La Cruz is popular among travelers in search of incredible views of the sunrise or the city's overwater sunsets, as well as those who want to stay active during their PV vacation.

Travelers say the trek to the lookout is well worth the time and effort, but that people in poor shape may find the uphill climb and stairs fairly strenuous. They also recommend bringing water, and note that there are restrooms you can use at the top (for a fee), so make sure to bring cash.

Playa las Gemelas Playa las Gemelas free

Playa las Gemelas is a small shoreline located amid condo and beach rentals. Located about 10 miles south of central Puerto Vallarta, its cerulean waves and sandy shore are a nice place to break away from some of PV's more crowded beaches. Still, because Playa las Gemelas is relatively small, it can feel quite congested, especially on the weekends. To avoid the crowds, travelers should visit during the week and arrive in the morning to stake their spot in the sand. They should also pack their own supplies – drinks, snacks, sunscreen and towels – since there are very few vendors or shops nearby.

With its clear waters and sandy bottom, recent travelers liken Playa las Gemelas to a big swimming pool. They also say taking a cab or an Uber is the easiest way to reach the beach. Though the lack of vendors means you'll have to pack all your own supplies, you may find it more peaceful thanks to the lack of pushy vendors. However, keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities here, and visitors can’t access any of the amenities within the condo towers along the shore.

Las Caletas Beach Las Caletas Beach

Las Caletas is another beach in Puerto Vallarta that's away from the more touristy beaches found in and around downtown. While the beach itself is located about 20 minutes south of PV geographically, you can only get here via a guided boat tour booked through Vallarta Adventures , who controls access to the dock and private beach. The beach itself is known for its powder-white sands, clear waters and hammocks strewn throughout. Visitors who book this tour can enjoy activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, and they can also arrange encounters with monkeys and parrots.

Note that the beach tour itself is rather pricey at around $159 per adult and about $115 per child ages 4 to 11, although prices may be lower if you purchase your ticket online. However, the experience includes a gourmet lunch and open bar, along with the use of kayaking and snorkeling equipment, access to a Teen Adventure Cave and Kid's Adventure Park and more. The tour itself also has excellent reviews, with travelers raving about how much fun they had and the quality of the food and drink. However, some complained that their time there was too short and they wished they could have stayed longer for the cost (the experience lasts about seven hours in total).

Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe free

The silhouette of this church in downtown PV is one of the most defining images of the resort town and its chiming church bells are one of the most recognizable sounds. During the Feast of Guadalupe, held every year from Dec. 1 to Dec. 12, the church is a hub of activity. During the annual festival, there is plenty of music, dancing and street processionals.

Recent visitors suggest pausing during a Malecón stroll to admire the church's Renaissance-style tower. Others recommended stopping inside to see the gorgeous interior or attending Mass (English services are held Saturdays at 5 p.m. – a bilingual service is held every Sunday at 10 a.m.).

Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach

The Marietas Islands are a collection of small, uninhabited islands off the coast of Riviera Nayarit. Punta Mita is the closest departure point for reaching the islands, but many Puerto Vallarta vacationers add the Marietas Islands to their itineraries given its close proximity (about an hour’s drive north). The islands are known for their incredible beaches, flora and fauna, and marine life, including sea turtles, tropical fish, dolphins and manta rays. However, the islands' "Hidden Beach" is what really attracts tourists thanks to its Instagram-worthy views and location that's tucked within the jungle on a remote island. When you search for photos of Hidden Beach, you can clearly see that it's completely surrounded by land. The water is only accessible during low tide as well, and you can only get there by snorkeling with a mask (but no flippers) when the tide is low. The best way to reach this natural wonder is via an organized boat tour .

Vallarta Adventures is a top-rated company that offers Hidden Beach guided tours as well as a full-day Marietas Islands Eco Discovery tour that goes to other islands, but not Hidden Beach. However, it's worth noting that some past visitors to Hidden Beach say they didn't get enough time on the beach itself (visits are limited to 15 to 20 minutes due to federal regulations). Others said the swim from the boat to the beach, which requires participants to swim beneath a rock arch, is treacherous due to strong currents, and may not be suited to those who aren’t capable swimmers. For many, spotting whales and other wildlife during the boat ride is the highlight.

Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures

Rhythms of the Night is a five-hour dinner show that is bookable through Vallarta Adventures. The show is advertised as a "feast for the senses" that begins with a sunset cruise from Puerto Vallarta to Las Caletas , where the dinner and show take place.

A candle-lit buffet meal commences once you arrive at the outdoor dining area, during which a range of singers, dancers and other performers entertain you with songs, fire dancing, acrobatics and more. Past travelers said that, while long, the Rhythms of the Night experience was worth it thanks to the high-quality dining and entertainment, which some compared to Cirque du Soleil. However, some travelers complained that part of the show took place before dinner, which caught them off guard and left them hungry until the formal meal began.

Isla Río Cuale Isla Río Cuale free

Isla Río Cuale is a mystery to many first-time Puerto Vallarta travelers. The fact that it's often difficult to find only adds to the enigma. In fact, Isla Río Cuale is almost in the heart of the city and is actually an island set upon an inlet of the Banderas Bay. To see the island, simply walk south from El Malecón until you reach a bridge that spans the river, and you'll discover the island, which is home to market stalls selling local wares.

Some visitors advised that there are the same trinkets on sale at Isla Rio Cuale as there are elsewhere in Puerto Vallarta, but they tend to be more expensive. Still, they admit that the locale has a great, car-free ambiance and is worth at least one visit during your time in PV. Isla Río Cuale is accessible free of charge.

Puerto Vallarta Travel Guide

Puerto vallarta mexico: at a glance.

Besides beautiful beaches, Puerto Vallarta has a lot of old world charm! It was famously immortalized in the 1964 film,  The Night of The Iguana , with Richard Burton.

He, and then-wife Elizabeth Taylor ended up buying a house in Puerto Vallarta — and you can now stay in the home the two owned, the  Casa Kimberly Boutique Hotel .

Puerto Vallarta Mexico: Know before you go

  • ✈️ Airport: Puerto Vallarta International (code: PVR) ⏰ Time Zone: Central Daylight Time (GMT-5)

  • 🗣 Language: Spanish, though English is common, and you may even hear some indigenous languages
  • 🎫 Mexico Visa: The vast majority of travelers do not need a visa for Puerto Vallarta — this includes Americans, Canadians, Japanese and most Europeans. Head here to see if you need a Mexico travel visa.
  • 🔌 Electricity Socket : You’ll mostly find Type A (two-prong) and Type B (three-prong) — the same as used in the United States. For visitors from other countries, you’ll need this  universal travel adaptor .
  • 📲 Mexico SIM Card : Wondering, Do I need a SIM card for Mexico? The answer is yes, every traveler will want a one for the reasons explained in this article all about the best Mexico SIM cards .
  • 🚙 Car Rentals : The Mexico rental car process can be a bit daunting, and many people are apprehensive to drive in a foreign country. I get it! Check out this guide to Renting a Car in Mexico for info on the process.

What’s the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta?

travel guide puerto vallarta

For the best weather: November to March are the ideal months to travel to Puerto Vallarta. This is, of course, the high season or busy season in Puerto Vallarta, so expect higher price tags and larger crowds.

Puerto Vallarta Shoulder Season: March to May is the shoulder season in Puerto Vallarta — a magical time when the weather is still nice, and the prices are still low. Note: Expect large crowds during Easter and Semana Santa (Holy Week).

For the best value: May to September will get you the most bang for your buck! However, know these months can be rainy, hot, humid and buggy. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountains, mosquitoes are an issue in Puerto Vallarta, especially in the summers, so don’t forget your eco-friendly bug spray 🦟

⛈ Note: June 1 to November 30 is the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Located on the Pacific Ocean (Banderas Bay), Puerto Vallarta is susceptible, though direct-hit hurricanes in Puerto Vallarta are rare.

Where is Puerto Vallarta located?

Puerto Vallarta is in central Mexico, and sits on the Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), an inlet just off the Pacific Ocean. It is about five hours east of Guadalajara , and about one hour southeast of Sayulita and the Riviera Nayarit.

islas marietas, hidden beach in mexico

The Puerto Vallarta Airport is one of the biggest airports in Mexico, and you can find direct flights to Puerto Vallarta from many places all over the world.

The easiest, safest and best way to get from Puerto Vallarta Airport to your hotel is via private shuttle service , but you can also catch a taxi, Uber, bus or other public transportation.

🚕💨 Note: If you’re planning to take Uber, make sure you have a Mexico SIM Card so you can call one. Trust me on this, the free Puerto Vallarta Airport WiFi is always spotty, so you’ll need data to call your Uber.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe?

According to experts, you are statistically quite safe while visiting Mexico. In fact, Puerto Vallarta is known as one of the safest cities in Mexico .

Millions of Americans go to Mexico on vacation every year, so if we play the numbers game, the number of incidents is very small… When I’m asked if Mexico is a safe place to go travel on vacation, my response is  yes . —Carlos Barron, FBI Veteran (source:  Forbes )

That’s not to say bad things don’t happen in Puerto Vallarta; they do. As with traveling anywhere, follow general travel safety like not walking home alone at night, watching your alcohol consumption and staying aware of yourself and surroundings.

For an added safety measure, pack these  travel safety items , dress in a way so your Mexico outfits blend in with the locals, and buy a Mexico SIM card .

Some other less-obvious things you’ll want to watch out for in Puerto Vallarta are dehydration, sunburns, mosquitoes and hangovers! Puerto Vallarta is hot year-round, and the mosquitoes are pretty bad in the summers. Speaking of summer, this is the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and Puerto Vallarta is susceptible.

What’s the best travel insurance for Mexico?

travel insurance for mexico paperwork

This is a question I get a lot as a Mexico travel writer and Mexico expat. To determine which Mexico travel insurance is best for you , consider factors like the policy’s total cost, your deductible, the coverage you need, your medical benefits, etc.

Puerto vallarta travel guide: frequently asked questions, can you drink the water in puerto vallarta mexico.

No — Unfiltered Mexico tap water is not safe for human consumption. However, you will need to keep drinking water and to stay extra hydrated, as Mexico is quite close to the Equator. In fact, dehydration is one of the most common ways people get sick in Mexico.

So what can you do?

  • If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, you can boil the water before drinking it.
  • You can keep buying bottled water — Though this gets expensive, and is horrible for the planet!
  • Use the Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle . This refillable bottle not only keeps you hydrated, but also filters your water so you don’t get sick in Mexico, and is good for the planet ♻️ Get 15% OFF with code SOLO15!

water bottles

The Water-To-Go Bottle has a built-in, three-stage filtration system that removes 99.9999% of all water-borne contaminants. These include bacteria, microplastics, viruses, heavy metals, chemicals and more. I personally own one, as you can drink Mexico water from any source (even the tap), and be completely safe.

What’s the Puerto Vallarta weather like?

puerto vallarta weather chart

Puerto Vallarta has a tropical climate — meaning you can expect warm and hot temperatures year-round, and heavy rains throughout the summer.

In the summers, temperatures hover around 95°F (35°C), though can feel hotter because of the humidity. For the best weather in Puerto Vallarta, visit between November to May.

How many days do I need in Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta isn’t a huge town — but you’ll still want at least four full days to see it all. However, if you want to explore the surrounding areas on some Puerto Vallarta day trips, you’ll want five full days; but of course: The longer the better!

This Puerto Vallarta Itinerary has options for planning the ultimate 3 days in Puerto Vallarta, 4 days in Puerto Vallarta or 5 days in Puerto Vallarta travel itinerary.

Is Puerto Vallarta expensive?

It depends — When comparing Puerto Vallarta to other beach towns in Mexico, it’s about average. Mid-range hotels in Puerto Vallarta cost about $100 USD per night, but you can save money by eating street tacos for 50¢ each; there’s Uber to get around, but also inexpensive public transportation.

Is Puerto Vallarta worth visiting?

Yes — Puerto Vallarta is one of the top beach towns in Mexico. However, there is so much more to it that makes Puerto Vallarta worth visiting. Besides beautiful beaches, Puerto Vallarta has a lot of old world charm — famously immortalized in the 1964 film,  The Night of The Iguana .

With the beaches along with the Bahía Banderas (Bay of Banderas) to one side, and the Sierra Madre mountain range on the other, this town will appeal to beach goers and adrenaline junkies alike. For some adventure travel in Puerto Vallarta, there are ATV Jungle Tours and Zip Line Excursions .

Spanish is the most widely-spoken, so some mistakenly say Spanish is the official language of Mexico. However, the government actually recognizes 68 national languages, including the Nahuatl Aztec language, and the Maya language.

💰 Mexico Currency

Mexican Peso — Exchange rates vary, but have hovered around $18-21 pesos to $1 USD for about the last decade. You will find some places that take U.S. dollars, but usually at an unfavorable rate, so stick to using pesos in Mexico .

☀️ Mexico Weather

Mexico is a big country — the 7th largest on Earth, in fact! It’s hard to generalize the weather in Mexico, because it will vary greatly by where you’re traveling.

In general, temperatures are mostly mild everywhere all year long, though summers on the coast are hot and humid, and winters in Central and Northern Mexico are on the colder side. Throughout the whole country, the rainy season runs from (about) April through September.

✈️ Mexico Busy Season & Slow Season

• Mexico Busy Season: The busy season in Mexico runs October to March, as this is the dry season and you’ll get the best weather. December is the busiest month for tourism in Mexico.

• Mexico Slow Season : If you don’t mind some rain, you’ll often find the best travel deal during the Mexico slow season of April to September. Do keep in mind that June 1-November 1 is Hurricane Season, and Mexico beaches are all susceptible.

• Mexico Shoulder Season : The shoulder season is that magical time when prices are still low and the weather is good. The Mexico shoulder season is from about mid-October to November and January to early-April.

🧳 Download your FREE Mexico Packing Checklist here!

Check out this Ultimate Packing List for Mexico — so you know what to pack and what NOT to pack for Mexico! This article offers advice on packing for Mexico cities, and packing for a Mexico beach vacation.

Beyond what Mexico outfits and clothing you’ll want to bring, here are a few extra things to consider:

• Filterable Water Bottle: Mexico is close to the Equator, so you’ll need to stay extra hydrated. In fact, dehydration is one of the most common ways people get sick in Mexico.

A filterable, refillable water bottle not only keeps you hydrated, but also filters your water so you don’t get sick in Mexico.

The Water-To-Go Bottle has a built-in, three-stage filtration system that removes 99.9999% of all water-borne contaminants. These include bacteria, microplastics, viruses, heavy metals and chemicals.

• Mexico SIM Card: Want to be able to use your phone in Mexico?! Of course you do! Pick up a TELCEL Mexico SIM card before your trip, and swap it out on the plane while you’re waiting to exit, so you have phone and data service the second you arrive in Mexico.

•  Anti-Hangover Meds: Planning to party hardy?! Make sure you’re not wasting any of your precious travel time with a hangover. Liquid I.V. has about 70,000 reviews on Amazon, and is considered the best defense against a hangover.

•  Sun Hat: No matter if you’re headed to the beach or a city, you’ll want to wear a hat to shield yourself from the strong Mexican sun. This cute sun hat is the perfect stylish and practical accessory for your Mexico vacation.

•   Sunscreen: As you’ll want to reapply a few times throughout the day, a light, Mineral-Based Sunscreen is ideal.

Headed to the beach? Do your part to practice responsible tourism in Mexico by only using an eco-friendly reef safe sunscreen while swimming. You can even ditch the sunscreen altogether and opt for a long sleeve swimsuit (AKA rash guard) instead.

•   Bug Repellent: Mosquitoes are common throughout Mexico — especially on the beaches! REPEL Insect Repellent is an eco-friendly brand that’s DEET-free and plant based, with a pleasant lemon and eucalyptus scent. Don’t want to use a spray? Pick up some Mosquito Repellent Bracelets .

The vast majority of travelers do not need a visa for Mexico — this includes Americans, Canadians, and most Europeans. Head here to see if you need a Mexico travel visa.

🤔 What is the mexico FMM ?

When you go through Customs & Immigration to enter the country, you’ll receive your Forma Migratoria Multiple , or FMM Tourist Card (sometimes listed as FMT). If you’re coming by plane or cruise ship, there is no charge; for those driving across the border, the FMM costs about $30USD.

In most circumstances, all visitors get a 180-day (six month) visa — so you can legally stay up to six months!

🚨 Have your FMM on you at all times

Keep in mind that though it’s called an FMM card , it’s actually just a small piece of paper. Keep your FMM on you at all times in your wallet, as this proves your legal status in Mexico. It’s rare, but if an officer stops you, they can ask to see your FMM.

🎫 Don’t lose your FMM!

You need to have your FMM on you at all times, as proof of your legal status in the country.

Be sure to keep track of your FMM, as you’ll have to give it back to an Immigration officer at the airport, cruise port, or land crossing when you’re leaving the country.

If you lose your FMM, there is a $600 peso ($30 USD) cost to replace it, and some paperwork you’ll need to fill out before you can leave the country.

If you’re flying home, plan to arrive at the airport about one hour earlier than you normally would to do the paperwork and pay the fine.

As this question doesn’t have a yes/no answer ( I wish it did! ), I do my best to answer it in depth in this article, Is Mexico Safe for Travelers Right Now ? However, for the most part, Mexico is actually statistically quite safe for all travelers — including solo travelers.

To answer the question, Is it safe to drive in Mexico? — YES , it’s considered safe to rent a car and drive in Mexico.

As the country is quite large, road trips are a great way to see a lot in a little time, and especially popular in the Yucatan Peninsula and Baja California Peninsula.

The one caveat to Mexico driving safety is that you’ll be in a foreign country, unfamiliar with their laws and customs. Head here for a complete guide to Renting A Car in Mexico: Everything You Need to Know , where you’ll also get 10 useful Mexico driving tips!

As a general rule, you’ll want to know at least a few words of Spanish when visiting anywhere in Mexico. This is both a sign of respect, and will also help you have a better, smoother trip.

If you stick to the more touristic places in Mexico, you should be fine with basic Spanish. For those planning to venture off the beaten path, be advised most people in pueblos  (small towns) speak little to no English.

🗣 Here are some options:

  • Brush up on your Spanish: Use a language-learning program like Rocket Spanish , so you’re confident, and conversational, before your trip.
  • Download the Google Translate App: For this to work at all times, you’ll need a Mexico SIM card with data — as the app won’t work when you’re off-WiFi.
  • Travel with a Mexico phrasebook: This Lonely Planet Spanish Phrasebook is an Amazon best seller, and a great non-digital language assistant!
  • Save this infographic an image on your phone. This way, you have access to these common words, phrases and questions, even when you’re off-WiFi.

31 Incredible Things to do in Puerto Vallarta [2023 Local’s Guide]

Looking for the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mexico? Look no further!

This article has been written by a local and contains a selection of the best renowned and off-the-beaten-path attractions that you can do in the area. The Mexican seaside town of Puerto Vallarta is just a short flight away from Mexico City and a quick drive from the city of Guadalajara, making it the perfect vacation spot to get the most out of your trip to Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta sits in the central state of Jalisco. It is something of a hidden gem among the popular seaside destinations in Mexico. In Vallarta, you’re more likely to avoid the almost certain crowds of Cancún or Tulum while still enjoying the many benefits of a tourist-friendly destination where it’s easy to get around.

Puerto Vallarta provides the ideal Mexican town experience combined with an array of adventure possibilities and a paradise feel. The Mexican Riviera is famous for its white sand beaches and year-round warm weather. No matter the time of year you’re planning on visiting, you’re guaranteed a good time and blue skies.

The city is divided into four major areas: Marina Vallarta, Downtown, The Romantic Zone, and The South Zone. Once a quaint and quiet fishing town, Vallarta has quickly grown and integrated certain areas to the north.

All of these spots offer a variety of things to see and do and it can be tricky to narrow it down. But don’t worry – that’s why we have crafted this expert insider guide to help you!

Best Things to do in Puerto Vallarta

travel guide puerto vallarta

A selection of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is detailed below. There is something for everyone here. Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach getaway, you want to venture out to secluded beaches and coves, or you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, you will find something here that you enjoy.

Visit the historic town center

The first must-see stop on your trip has to be downtown Vallarta. The town center of Puerto Vallarta is known for its lively cobblestone streets and its colorful atmosphere. In the downtown area, you’ll find a wide array of local businesses, artisans and craftsmen, souvenir shops, and local restaurants.

While you’re exploring downtown Vallarta, pop by the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Hidalgo 370, Proyecto escola, Centro). This is one of countless stunning Catholic churches in the city.

Here, you can admire the neoclassical-style structure and its baroque elements. Access to the church is free and you will not want to miss the beautiful interior and vibrant frescoes inside. If you are interested in attending a service, the Church leads services in English on Saturdays and mass in both English and Spanish on Sundays.

The city center is also home to quite a few jewelry stores that sell beautiful and unique sterling silver pieces at great prices, as well as authentic talavera and traditional pottery shops. From local street food markets to luxury five-star restaurants and fancy shops, Puerto Vallarta is known for its gastronomy, and you’ll find all of this and more downtown.

Take a walk along the Malecon

travel guide puerto vallarta

While you’re around the downtown area, head for a sunset walk along the famous Malecon de Puerto Vallarta. This 12-mile-long boardwalk is mostly closed off to vehicle traffic and is the perfect path for a sunset stroll.

Walking along the boardwalk is a must when visiting Vallarta. All of the things that you can anticipate finding along your path – and those you can’t – are guaranteed to make this a memorable experience.

While you make your way along the boardwalk and enjoy a beautiful ocean view, stop to have a bite at one of the many restaurants by the sea, grab some souvenirs and take lovely scenic shots or artsy pictures of the bronze sculptures that garnish the walkway. Many of these art pieces were created by renowned Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante.

The Malecon is a lively spot 24/7 and it is known for its amazing nightlife. The streets here really come to life after sunset. Many of the charming restaurants and quaint coffee bars transform into live music venues and host local and international musicians after dark. If you are looking to party until the sun comes up, check out the nightclubs ‘La Santa’ and ‘Strana’.

Watch the ritual ceremony of the Papantla Flying Men

If you’re lucky, you may be able to witness the ritual dance of the Papantla flying men while you walk along the Malecon. This dance is a cultural and artistic representation that dates back to pre-Colombian times.

The people of Papantla in old Mesoamerica used to carry out this ritual dance, showing gratitude to the Gods in appreciation of Earth, bounty, and fertility. Today, watching the Papantla flying men is a little glimpse into the rich cultural and historical memory of Mexico.

The ceremony starts with the dancers climbing a 98 ft tall pole. Four of the five dancers, tied to ropes, launch themselves from the top of the pole while the fifth dancer stays at the top and plays the flute and a drum.

This ritual dance is one of the oldest surviving traditions in Mexico. It is a crucial piece of cultural heritage, and it is not every day that one gets the chance to see it. You may be able to catch a glimpse of this dance in various parts of Mexico – from Chapultapec park in Mexico City to the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk.

Experience the Puerto Vallarta dining scene

Best things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

There are a plethora of excellent restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. The eateries here serve up all types of cuisine from across Mexico and the globe. Whatever your preferences and budget, you will find something here that suits you.

If you want to sample authentic Jaliscan food, El Palomar De Los Gonzalez (Aguacate 425, Alta Vista, 48380) is a great place to have dinner. This beautiful restaurant is nestled on the top of the mountains right in the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s downtown.

The menu is made up of family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Everything is lovingly-prepared with locally-sourced ingredients.

Start with Tere’s Salad. Then, follow it up with some Minionetta shrimp, yelapa tostadas, or a mariscada if you are in the mood for sharing. The Flambéed bananas are the perfect dish to end up an amazing meal.

If you are into fine dining, reservations at Tintoque (Aquiles Serdán 445, Zona Romántica, Emiliano Zapata) are a must. This restaurant is the brainchild of Chef Joel Ornelas, born and bred in Puerto Vallarta.

After traveling the world, Ornelas opened up his restaurant so that he could serve traditional Jaliscan recipes with an international twist. The eatery offers fusion cuisine at its finest, and the setting is every bit as wonderful as the food.

Eat your way around town with a Puerto Vallarta food tour

If you consider yourself a foodie traveler, a Puerto Vallarta food tour is a great way to immerse yourself in the local gastronomy. Various local companies offer food tours that give you the opportunity to sample Jaliscan treats and street food favorites.

Enjoy sinking your teeth into carnitas tacos, tamales, atole, local seafood, birria, fresh churros, and much more. Many local food tours take you on a journey through offbeat residential neighborhoods such as Pitillal which are untouched by tourism.

Your tour guide will take you to street food markets and stalls that you would not find independently. Better still?

They will be able to help you communicate with the local vendors so that you can learn about their backgrounds and life stories. This is something that would otherwise be tricky to do unless you are fluent in Spanish.

Taking a Puerto Vallarta tour also means that you have a local expert on hand to offer recommendations. You can ask them for their suggestions on the best places to hang out, go for drinks, go shopping, etc.

Visit the Romantic Zone and Playa de los Muertos

travel guide puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone is part of the old town of Vallarta and is known as “La Zona Romántica”. This neighborhood sits just south of the town center and is known for its highly rated cafes, shops, and restaurants.

It is generally a pretty busy and lively area of the city. This neighborhood is found in the heart of Old Vallarta and is one of the most visited areas of the city. The Romantic Zone is also a great area to look for accommodation options.

The hotels and resorts found here are usually budget-friendly. Not to mention, opting to base yourself in a central location allows you the opportunity to experience the city to its fullest.

If you’re looking for a traditional place to have lunch or dinner by the beach, the seafood restaurant ‘La Palapa’ in Playa de Los Muertos serves some of the best lobster tacos and ceviche in town. Enjoy an amazing meal accompanied by traditional live music and breathtaking ocean views.

For a quintessentially Mexican drink , wash it all down with a michelada. Micheladas are beer cocktails that Mexicans go crazy for, even if they may seem like obscure concoctions to outsiders!

To make a michelada, beer is poured into a mixture of tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Maggi sauce, lime juice, and spices. It’s an acquired taste for sure but it is something that you must try while in Mexico.

Take a day trip out to Mascota

Mascota is a charming colonial-style Pueblo Magico that is situated halfway between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara . Pueblo Magicos are quaint towns and settlements that have been recognized by the Mexican tourism board for offering a particularly special culture, architecture, or gastronomy.

When you see that somewhere has been identified as being a Pueblo Magico, you can generally feel assured that it is a worthwhile place to visit. This definitely rings true of Mascota.

This little town is home to just 8,215 people. It is frequently overlooked by most visitors to Jalisco and sits beside El Circuito Rural.

This is a 35km route that connects Mascota with various small towns in the region. This includes Lake Juanacatlan, Yerbabuena, Cimarrón Chico de la Raicilla, Santa Rosa, and Navidad.

Consider basing yourself in Mascota for a day or two and using it as a jump-off point to explore these lesser-known spots. The town itself, with its picturesque central square and cobblestone streets, is deserved a day’s attention.

Spend a day in San Sebastián del Oeste

San Sebastián del Oeste is one of the most popular day trips that you can take from Puerto Vallarta. However, if your schedule permits, it is well worth spending a night here. This beautiful Pueblo Magico is nestled high in the Sierra Madre mountains. Its highest point is a mountain known as “La Bufa”.

One of the most exhilarating things to do here is to rent an ATV and drive to its peak, passing traditional villages as you go, to admire the view at the top. Once upon a time, Sen Sebastian was a prosperous silver mining town and it thrived during the colonial era.

Today, it is home to some of the friendliest people in Jalisco, and its winding cobbled streets and passageways, and traditional architecture are a photographer’s dream. Many old haciendas have been converted into luxury hotels and offer a truly unique place to stay.

Raicilla, a strong, distilled Mexican spirit, originates from the southwestern part of Jalisco close to San Sebastián del Oeste. Many distilleries are scattered around the region and it is possible to organize a tour and tasting. In particular, consider stopping by Tesoro del Oeste.

Fall in love with Talpe de Allende

Talpa de Allende is a Pueblo Magico in the Sierra Madre mountains, just two hours away from Puerto Vallarta. It is perhaps best known for being the final stopping point on “la Ruta del Peregrino”.

This is a 72-mile pilgrimage through the state of Jalisco. The pilgrimage takes place every year and thousands of people from across Mexico trek to the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

They come to pay their respects to a tiny Virgen del Rosario statue known as “La Chaparrita” which they believe can perform miracles. But religion aside, there is plenty to see and do in the area.

Look out for the Murales Magico – a colorful alleyway that is painted from top to bottom with vibrant murals. The paintings here display everything from aspects of Mexican traditions, to animated movie characters.

Since the town is situated at a relatively high altitude, the climate up here is much cooler than elsewhere in Jalisco. Go for an afternoon stroll through el Bosque de Maple (the maple forest).

This is a gorgeous wooded park filled with lakes and numerous walking trails. It provides you with a wonderful opportunity to get back to nature.

Venture off the beaten path at Real del Alto

If you have access to a vehicle, you can stop by the rural community in Real del Alto when you take a trip to San Sebastián del Oeste. This is a centuries-old settlement that today is only home to around 40 people.

The village is located at a very high altitude, atop a steep mountaintop. Access to the village requires driving up a treacherous mountain pass.

For this reason, over the decades, the villagers are starting to slowly relocate elsewhere and Real del Alto’s future looks uncertain. Many of the buildings here are falling into abandonment.

There is not an awful lot to see here. An hour or so is a sufficient amount of time to spend here.

However, Real del Alto provides a wonderful glimpse into rural life in Mexico, and in some ways, traveling here feels like venturing back in time. There are just a couple of stores and many residents live off the land.

The views across Jalisco state from up here are unparalleled. The little church at the village peak (Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario del Real Alto) is charming. There is an ancient rose bush (Rosa de Castilla) growing outside of the church that is from Spain.

Get lost in a downtown oasis at the Cuale River Island

The Cuale River Island is a paradise oasis hidden right in the heart of urban Vallarta. It is named after the river that flows from the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains into Banderas Bay.

The river essentially divides the city in two. You will find the downtown area to the north of the river and the Romantic Zone to the south.

There’s a lot to explore on the island. Pop by the Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale, a traditional indoor market that sells everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, to souvenirs and nick-nacks.

You’ll likely find talented artisans and lovely traditional crafts in every corner of the city and within the Mercado Municipal. However, you may prefer to look for these along the Malecon and around the Cuale River Island.

These are generally better quality, original and traditional artesanías made by talented craftsmen and local indigenous women. Venturing here, away from the swarms of tourists looking for cheaper trinkets, can help you secure a better price on your souvenir purchases.

Immersing yourself in the rich history and culture of the country is an essential part of visiting Mexico. While you’re at Rio Cuale Island, pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum.

Here, you will get the chance to see an amazing collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, pottery, and even tombs! This is a great place to learn a bit about Mexico’s history.

See the Rhythms of the Night show

Not sure how to spend an evening in Puerto Vallarta but not big on partying? One of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to see the Rhythms of the Night show

This is an immersive, cultural experience that was founded by the creators of Cirque du Soleil. The experience takes you to a steamy tropical rainforest at Las Caletas, close to the sun-bleached remnants of an old pyramid.

Your evening starts with a sunset cruise across Banderas Bay. Your boat takes you to the secluded cove of Las Caletas where tiki torches light your way through the jungle to your dining table.

As you meander through the jungle paths, you are greeted by dancers, acrobats, and fire jugglers. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Mexican meal overlooking the sea, as incredible performances take place from every angle around you.

Snorkel or scuba dive at Los Arcos de Mismaloya

If you’re up for an underwater adventure, head over to the Mismaloya beach and out to Los Arcos. This natural attraction is the perfect site for nature lovers visiting Vallarta.

Both swimmers and non-swimmers alike can enjoy the beach. This is one of the best spots in Jalisco where you can admire the unique blue-green color of the warm, tropical waters off the coast of Puerto Vallarta.

There are many tour options that you can look into, catering to whatever mood you’re in for your visit. Whether you’re an experienced diver, a keen snorkeler, or simply looking to spend a nice day by the sea, Los Arcos de Mismaloya offers wildlife spotting and the chance to experience a uniquely mysterious natural wonder!

Head north to Nuevo Vallarta and witness a baby sea turtle release

If you’re looking to explore more of the Mexican Riviera, head north from Puerto Vallarta to the newer part of town known as Nuevo Vallarta. This area is located north of the Ameca River and just across the border into the state of Nayarit.

The area of Nuevo Vallarta differs from South Zone in its organic nature. The North Zone is more of a purpose-built tourist destination that grew in response to the quickly developing town of Vallarta.

It is filled with luxury beach resorts and upscale international restaurants. The vibe here is very different from the local, authentic feel of the old town.

However, that is not to say that a visit to Nuevo Vallarta is not worth your time. This area is famous for its white sand beaches with calm, translucent waters that are safe to swim in year-round and perfect for families.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Nuevo Vallarta during hatching season (July to December ), you are in for a treat. You could have the chance to watch baby sea turtles being released and making their way into the ocean for the first time.

Conservation programs in Vallarta work extremely hard to protect and preserve sea turtles. There are local sanctuaries located all over Banderas Bay.

During the hatching season, sea turtles hatch and are released almost daily at the different sanctuaries across the bay. You could be part of the conservation efforts that ensure baby turtles make it safely into the ocean!

Take a day trip to Punta de Mita

Punta de Mita is the place to visit if you’re looking for a luxury beach escape away from the hordes in Puerto Vallarta. This area is located just under an hour away from Puerto Vallarta and is home to many luxurious, upscale hotels.

The Four Seasons, St. Regis Punta Mita, and other luxe hospitality brands have properties here. If your budget allows and you are looking to treat yourself, this area makes a wonderful place to stay for a week or two.

Punta de Mita provides a stark contrast to other highly sought-after beach tourism destinations in Mexico. It is still known for being a relatively tranquil place to vacation. This rings true even during the peak season ( January to March)!

This lovely little peninsula is surrounded by breath-taking aquamarine ocean waters on three sides and is home to a number of heavenly white sand beaches. Playa La Lancha is the ultimate surfing destination.

Accessing the beach requires following a mile-long dirt trail through the woodland. This helps this paradisical secluded beach avoid the eyes of most tourists. Unless you specifically knew where Playa La Lancha was, you would never stumble across it accidentally.

Meanwhile, Playa Anclote is the best option for a day of family fun and beautiful views. Whatever type of beach experience you’re after, you’ll find it at Punta de Mita.

Sample some of the best street tacos in town

If you are renting a car in Mexico and plan on driving to Punta de Mita, make a strategic pit stop at ‘Tacos On The Street’ for authentic Mexican tacos! This is a real local place that is as popular among Mexicans as it is among international tourists. Expect a short wait to be served but know that it is well worth it.

Indulge in exquisite artisanal chocolate

When visiting Mexico, you can’t miss out on the opportunity to try artisanal Mexican chocolate. One of the most interesting facts about Mexico that a lot of people do not realize? Chocolate was invented here!

You can find a variety of stores that sell artisanal chocolate. It can be a fun experience to head to the various stores independently and try a few different chocolate varieties.

Alternatively, you can take your experience further and go on a chocolate tour at a beautiful cacao garden. At ‘Planeta Cacao’, you can learn everything about the production process. Your guide will walk you through the stages that chocolate goes through: from the cacao pod to the store.

The space was created with the purpose of educating people on the history of cacao, from pre-Columbian times to the present. It gives a detailed look into the process of production and discusses the importance of chocolate within Mexican culture and gastronomy.

Puerto Vallarta chocolate tours

You can take part in one of their chocolate workshops or simply take a guided tour of the garden and take it all in. A number of Puerto Vallarta chocolate tours are detailed below for your consideration. Some even teach you how to make truffles!

  • Puerto Vallarta: Bean to bar chocolate workshop
  • Two-hour chocolate truffles workshop in Puerto Vallarta
  • Mole Poblano workshop in Puerto Vallarta

Go whale watching at Las Islas Marietas

The Islas Marietas is a beautiful natural sanctuary that is home to a plethora of endangered wildlife, flora, and fauna. Hawksbill sea turtles, Mexican spiny-tailed iguana, and Prairie Falcon are just a few of the endangered species that call the island home.

The area was designated as a protected biosphere reserve in 2008. It is one of 40 such places in Mexico, several of which are recognized by UNESCO.

Las Islas Marietas are located on the northern end of Bahía de Banderas. You can reach them in just over an hour from Puerto Vallarta’s main pier and in only fifteen minutes from Punta Mita.

The Marietas Islands are a paradise for nature lovers. Birdwatching, snorkeling, and whale watching are all popular activities on the islands.

Dolphin sightings are common around the islands year-round. It is not unusual to see them in large groups or in pairs, swimming alongside boats that are out on the water. However, during the winter months (approximately December through March), humpback whales arrive at the centuries-old breeding ground that is Banderas Bay.

They are certainly the guests of honor at the islands! This is one of the best places for whale-watching in Mexico.

The humpbacks stay for a short while in the waters of Mexico’s Pacific Coast before continuing their journey in their annual migration route. There are several tour options available to go whale watching.

Best whale-watching tours in Puerto Vallarta

travel guide puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta whale-watching tours offer you the opportunity to experience the once-in-a-lifetime chance to share a part of these gentle giants’ migration journey. Although a sighting cannot be guaranteed, it is very uncommon to go out on a whale-watching tour here and not see a whale or two.

Some tour companies will give you a refund or offer you the chance to participate free of charge in their next scheduled tour should you be unfortunate enough not to see a whale or two. Several reputable tours are detailed below for your consideration.

Book your place in advance! These tours are popular and do sell out.

  • Puerto Vallarta: responsible whale-watching experience
  • Whale-watching cruise in Puerto Vallarta
  • Puerto Vallarta: Whale-watching photo safari
  • Dolphin-watching cruise with a biologist
  • Puerto Vallarta: Dolphins in the wild tour

Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta

1. arriving: puerto vallarta airport tips.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta is easy as there’s an international airport ( Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz ) with daily flights to many cities in North America.

It’s not a big airport, so it doesn’t take long to get through once you arrive, especially if you’ve already cleared customs in another city in Mexico.

In fact, when I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, it only took me 15 minutes from the time the plane landed to collect my bags and get out of the airport.

The airport is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the city center, and there are several options for getting there.

Once you’ve got your luggage, you can either grab a taxi right outside the main airport doors (many people will ask you if you need one), take a public bus, or get an Uber.

And if you need to connect, there is free Wi-Fi in the airport.

Knowing important travel tips for Puerto Vallarta will help you plan the perfect trip to Mexico

Ubers are about half the price of a taxi, but they do not come to the airport terminal doors; you will have to walk five minutes.

When you exit the airport, turn left (walk to the end of the building), and turn left again. You will see a pedestrian bridge across the street. Walk across the bridge and catch an Uber from over there as this is the only place they pick you up. It should cost about $5-10 to get from the airport to most accommodations.

Alternatively, you can take a public bus. The station is right under the pedestrian bridge on the same side as the airport.

There are several busses that go into the various neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta , which will be marked on the front of the bus.

If you aren’t sure, you can always ask the bus driver by saying the name of the area you are going to. The bus costs 50 cents.

2. US Travel To Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for travelers from the United States due to its close proximity, warm weather, amazing atmosphere, and an international airport that makes it easy to get to and from.

As a US citizen, you will automatically be given a six-month visa on arrival, making it a great place to work remotely if you want to extend your stay. In fact, it’s a popular place for creators to stay when trying to start a travel blog and make money .

There are direct flights from dozens of popular cities in the U.S. including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.

American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest all fly there as well as several other international airlines.

3. Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta Safety

Safety is always a concern for visitors traveling to Mexico, but Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the safest destinations in the country.

Millions of tourists visit Puerto Vallarta every year with no problems. I’ve lived here for three months as a solo female traveler and have never felt scared or in danger.

This being said, I do have a few safety tips for Puerto Vallarta to share:

Like any city, petty theft does happen so you should be vigilant when walking with your belongings, especially at night.

Keep your phone or attractive electronics away when you’re wandering the cobblestone streets, and don’t leave them unattended at the beach. You might also invest in some pickpocket-proof garments to more easily avoid pickpockets .

Moreover, always protect yourself with travel insurance , as theft can happen anywhere.

As a solo female traveler, I try to avoid walking at night no matter where I am. Instead, I get Ubers — which are very affordable in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon , a beach boardwalk in the center of Puerto Vallarta, is safe to walk alone at night as it is always full of people and police.

During Covid-19, Puerto Vallarta received the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council, which recognizes the ongoing implementation of strict safety measures in destinations around the world.

4. Travel Insurance For Puerto Vallarta

Here is one of the most important tips for travelers to Mexico :

When visiting Puerto Vallarta — or anywhere else in the world — it’s important to get travel insurance. If we’ve learned anything in the last year, it’s that the unexpected can and does happen.

While there are many providers out there, one of the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country.

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

5. Puerto Vallarta Weather

One of the top travel tips for Puerto Vallarta is to see the sunset

Puerto Vallarta has warm weather year-round, making it a perfect beach destination for those looking to escape the cold winters in the northern hemisphere.

Temperatures never get colder than 72°F, so you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful beaches and ocean no matter what time of year you visit!

June is the hottest month of the year and the start of the rainy season which goes until October.

The rain typically only happens for a few hours in the afternoon or in the evening so you’ll still get lots of beach time even if you visit during the summer.

6. When To Visit Puerto Vallarta

Exploring the beaches of Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your tolerance for heat and crowds. October to April is the high season which coincides with the most pleasant (driest) weather and whale-watching season.

Since this is right after the rainy season, it’s also ideal for hiking as there will be lush green scenery and full waterfalls. In fact, the destination offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the world , with this being the best time to take in local scenery at its most stunning.

The downside of visiting during the high season is that this is when you’ll find the biggest crowds and the highest prices on accommodation.

The weather starts to become what many would consider unpleasantly hot in June, so avoid traveling to Puerto Vallarta then then if you don’t like the heat.

Additionally, the summer coincides with the rainy season but can be a great time to get deals on accommodation and tours.

You could also time your trip to Puerto Vallarta to attend one of the city’s many events like Pride month in May or Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November.

7. What To Know About Puerto Vallarta Travel

Exploring El Centro while traveling to Puerto Vallarta

Now, there are a few things to know about Puerto Vallarta before traveling.

When planning a trip to Mexico , you’ll be happy to know that the country has some of the most relaxed entry protocols anywhere in the world during COVID-19 — so if you’re wondering “Can I travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico” the answer is very likely “yes!”.

You do not need a test to enter the country, although I always recommend it.

Infection rates are declining on the whole in Mexico, and in Puerto Vallarta, there are few restrictions.

At the time of writing, everything is open, there is no curfew, and for the most part, life feels normal here. You must wear a mask inside establishments, and some places take your temperature before entering.

Moreover, Puerto Vallarta is extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Zona Romantica is the gay neighborhood, and it’s filled with rainbow flags and gay clubs. There are lots of events for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially during Pride at the end of May.

You do not need to know Spanish to travel around Puerto Vallarta, but it’s always helpful to know a few key phrases like hello ( hola ), thank you ( gracias ), and how are you ( cómo estás? ).

This being said, don’t be nervous if you can’t speak Spanish; most locals speak English and are used to travelers who do not know Spanish.

8. Puerto Vallarta Hotels

There’s no shortage of amazing hotels to stay at in Puerto Vallarta. Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive family resort or an LGBTQ+ friendly hotel, you’ll be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta.

The biggest resorts and hotels tend to be concentrated in the north and south neighborhoods of the city where you’ll find nicer beaches.

If you want to stay in a resort, some good areas are Conchas Chinas , the North Hotel Zone , and Marina Vallarta . These places are known for having some really great all-inclusive Mexico resorts as well as delicious vegan-friendly Mexico resorts .

Conchas Chinas is one of the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta

If you prefer to stay in the heart of the city then book your accommodation in 5 de Diciembre , El Centro , or Zona Romantica .

From these neighborhoods, you’ll be able to walk to The Malecon where you can find restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. You won’t find as many all-inclusive resorts here but there are plenty of boutique hotels and cute Airbnbs to choose from.

In reality, it doesn’t really matter which part of the city you stay in, as getting around is easy.

And to help you easily find great places to stay, here are a few resources:

You can also use the map below to search for local stays:

9. Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is not a huge city which makes it easy to get around.

In terms of the best way to travel in Puerto Vallarta , if you stay in Centro or Zona Romantica, you’ll be able to walk to bars, restaurants, and the beach easily.

Visiting Los Muertos Pier is one of the top things to do in Puerto Vallarta

Even if you stay in one of the neighborhoods a little further out like Conchas Chinas, you can still get around Puerto Vallarta cheaply by using the bus or ride-sharing apps.

There are buses that run all over the city and only cost 50 cents to get on.

Alternatively, you can take an Uber or inDriver (a local car ride app). A 20-minute Uber across town costs around $2.50-$5 depending on demand.

There are also taxis readily available on populated streets, but these are typically more expensive. Always remember to negotiate the price beforehand if you get a taxi!

Of course, you can also rent a car. While it’s not really necessary to have a car if you’re staying in and exploring Puerto Vallarta thanks to the many budget-friendly public transportation options, some travelers like to rent one if they’re doing a lot of day trips to traveling to other places in Mexico.

One recommendation:

Use Discover Cars to quickly compare your car rental options.

10. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants

No list of Puerto Vallarta travel tips would be complete without talking about the food.

Mexico is world-famous for its cuisine, and Puerto Vallarta is no exception to this.

Given that the city is right by the ocean, you can enjoy excellent quality seafood here with Mexican flavor. Some of the top restaurants are:

  • Mezcal y Sal
  • Barcelona Tapas
  • The Blue Shrimp

Mezcal y Sal offers some of the best cheap eats in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The street food is also amazing here, so don’t be afraid to try it. There are taco stands on almost every corner where you can enjoy a filling meal for just a couple of dollars.

In terms of Puerto Vallarta money tips , this is a great way to save if you’re traveling on a budget.

Puerto Vallarta also has plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Check out Vegan Ramen , the Green Place , and Salud Super Food for healthy veggie-friendly options.

11. Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta

Although Puerto Vallarta is a city, one of the best things about it is the quick access to the ocean and mountains, making it a perfect place to go on outdoor adventures .

Some of the most popular things to do here include whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, or simply relaxing by the beach and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.

For the best diving, head to Los Arcos National Marine Park .

Los Arcos Marine Park Mexico is one of the top attractions in Puerto Vallarta

There are also a lot of hiking trails to explore around the city. One of my favorites is Los Arcos which leaves from Boca de Tomatlán to Las Animas Beach .

It takes two hours, passing by secluded beaches along the way you can stop and enjoy.

From Las Animas, you can grab a water taxi back to the city.

No Puerto Vallarta visitor's guide would be complete without mentioning Colomitos Beach

Another popular walk within the city is to the Mirador La Cruz del Cerro , an observation deck with some of the best views of the city.

Within the city, there are many fun things to do too.

Walking along The Malecon is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening just people watching and exploring the many restaurants and shops of Puerto Vallarta.

You can join a paid food or drink tour, and there are also free city walking tours and art walks that happen every Wednesday.

Additionally, Puerto Vallarta has lively nightlife with clubs that go into the early hours of the morning. Salsa dancing is very popular here!

12. Tours In Puerto Vallarta

Speaking of tours in Puerto Vallarta, here are some highly-rated ones to check out:

  • 🍹 Food and Mixology Tour: Tequila, Tacos, and Mexican Cocktails
  • ⛰️ Sierra Madre ATV Adventure from Puerto Vallarta
  • 🐒 Puerto Vallarta Outdoor Adventure Zip Line and Speedboat Ride
  • 🐠 Yelapa Waterfall & Majahuitas Snorkeling Tour from Puerto Vallarta
  • ⛵ Day Sailing on Banderas Bay

13. Day Trips From Puerto Vallarta

San Pancho in Mexico should be listed in every travel guide to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is an excellent base to explore surrounding places as fun day trips .

Sayulita and San Pancho are two up-and-coming beach towns in Mexico popular for surfing. Sayulita is notorious for its nightlife, and San Pancho is more relaxed.

From Boca de Tomatlán — which is a half an hour drive from Puerto Vallarta — you can get a taxi boat to many secluded beaches and small towns along the coast.

Yelapa is one of the most popular places to visit. This laid-back beach town is only accessible by boat or hiking trail, and there you can find many waterfalls to explore.

There’s also the charming mountain town of San Sebastian , an hour and a half drive away. It’s a great place to go hiking and cool off from the heat.

San Sebastian is one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta

14. Solo Travel In Puerto Vallarta

Going on a vacation to Puerto Vallarta on your own? You’ll be happy to know that the city is one of the top solo female travel destinations for many.

It’s easy to make friends in Puerto Vallarta as a solo traveler. I found an amazing group of friends within two days of moving here that I’ve loved getting to know.

Staying at hostels is always a good way to meet people, but if you prefer to stay at an Airbnb or hotel, it’s still easy to meet other travelers.

Facebook groups are one of the most popular ways to connect with other travelers in Puerto Vallarta. Here are some of the best ones:

  • Puerto Vallarta: Everything You Need Or Want to Know  (big, general group for asking questions about anything)
  • Puerto Vallarta Digital Nomads  (coworking meet-ups and events)
  • Puerto Vallarta Gays  (LGBTQ+ information, meet-ups, and tips)
  • Young & Fun Xpats  (social meet-ups for people 20-40 years old)

I hope these tips could help you plan an amazing trip to Puerto Vallarta!

While the city is touristy, there’s a reason its so popular and I’ve fallen in love with it over the last few months. If you’re looking for a fun place to explore for your next vacation, Puerto Vallarta is a great choice!

What travel tips for Puerto Vallarta would you add to the list?

Puerto Vallarta Weather — The Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta

Young people in sitting on a sailboat during a Vallarta Adventures tour

The best times to go to Puerto Vallarta are determined in large part by two forces: prices and weather patterns. Since Puerto Vallarta sits relatively close to the Equator, the latter are fairly uniform year-round, with most monthly temperature averages sitting well above room temperature. Summer is the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta and thus most likely to have inclement weather. Winter is the season during which most people visit Puerto Vallarta, driving prices higher during November through February. Keeping both pricing and Puerto Vallarta weather in mind, the best time to visit the region is between April and June, when the weather is pleasant and the room rates are affordable.

An alternative to this is using Uber, which is a reliable and affordable service. However, be aware that you may be asked to take one of the authorized taxi services in these areas.

Historical building in San Sebastian

Puerto Vallarta was made famous with the film The Night of the Iguana entirely produced on location in 1963. For the first time, Puerto Vallarta received big Hollywood stars, national celebrities and American intellectuals. Deborah Kerr, Ava Gardner, Sue Lyon and Richard Burton led the cast. Tennessee Williams, author of The Night of the Iguana, visited the set frequently. Elizabeth Taylor's romance with Richard Burton was unveiled in Puerto Vallarta during this time. Charmed by Vallarta's magic, Richard and Elizabeth purchased a house, Casa Kimberley. John Huston built a house in the small cove of Caletas where he lived until his death.

The international media followed the stars and Puerto Vallarta was no longer a secret, waiting to be discovered. Recognizing this new opportunity, visionary leaders such as Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, then president of Mexico, along with Francisco Medina Ascencio, then governor of the state of Jalisco, shared the vision to make of Puerto Vallarta a model tourist destination and initiated projects that provided the town with appropriate infrastructure.

Puerto Vallarta has grown ever since to become one of the most favorite vacation destinations of North American travelers. Puerto Vallarta presently offers first rate infrastructure to accommodate the most discriminating travelers.

Puerto Vallarta showing a beach, a bay or harbor and tropical scenes

Visit Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is an oceanfront city on the west coast of Mexico. The area began as a collection of sleepy fishing and pearl-diving villages. Today, the city and surrounding parts of the Bay of Banderas (Bahía de Banderas) are popular with tourists as a resort destination. You will find a range of outdoor family activities here, from water sports to secluded beaches and botanical gardens. The Bay of Banderas is a 62-mile (100-kilometer) stretch of beach with rocky outcrops, white sand and clear water. Puerto Vallarta is the largest community here, and is home to the elegant Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Snorkel or scuba dive off the coast and see manta rays, sea bass and dolphins. Las Caletas is a small, private beach accessible only by water. Take the Vallarta Adventures catamaran to go on hikes in the jungle, visit a small zoo and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch. The beach is the former private residence of Hollywood director John Huston. Take an evening stroll along the Malecon, the pedestrian promenade that lines the Puerto Vallarta coast. The area is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists and is lined with restaurants, street performers and food vendors. Enjoy a cool tejuino, a local drink made with fermented corn, or buy grilled fish by the skewer. The Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens give insight into the local wildlife and vegetation. The gardens include conservation areas dedicated to the blue agave plant, used in tequila production, as well as native vanilla orchids. Puerto Vallarta is particularly popular between January and March. Gostavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport is a short bus trip from the city center. Get around the city on foot or by local buses, which are cheap and run frequently. Try taco stands for cheap street food, or the cafés and restaurants in the old town for sit-down meals.

Getting around puerto vallarta.

By far the easiest way to get around the Puerto Vallarta area is by taxi. As fares are relatively low, this is a less indulgent option than in many other destinations. Take a water taxi for something a bit different. Public buses are another alternative, and the network is cheap and easy to use. Although you can rent a car at the airport, this is rarely necessary and can end up being quite expensive. Browse Puerto Vallarta rental cars .

Best time to visit

Different people will prefer Puerto Vallarta at different times of the year. If you are interested in whale watching, be sure to visit between December and March so you can spot these impressive animals. Note that this is high season, so there will be bigger crowds and higher room rates. Enjoy a quieter break by visiting between April and June. This is the off-season, but the weather will still be good.

I would like to go there on my next trip to PV. Besides the souvenir shops what else is there to do?

It all sounds lovely. I'll have to see what would be best for us as far as how far to walk and the least steps.

If you started at The River Cafe, coming by taxi, instead of back on the Malecon, would save you quite a few steps (literally, both distance and staircases).

The only steps will be going down from the Malecon entrance at Oscars Restaurant, if you start there, and they are wide. That's assuming if you want to do the length of the island and prefer going down steps rather than up steps.

The ramp is super gradual if you start at Insurgentes.

kansas, yes, there are no steps after coming down from the Malecon to Oscars. The tunnel runs under insergentes, and immediately to your right after the tunnel is the Circle Bar. If you don't want steps going back, go east to the cultural center and take the foot bridge south. Brings you near the old Rizos. Nice walk, and cold cerveza along the way.

The stairs from the Malecon have handrails and are very wide across. If you need to stop and rest you wil not be blocking other foot traffic. I would rather access the island by these stairs rather than the swinging bridges. Sometimes when crossing one of those bridges , youngsters on it will jump up and down to make it even more unstable. I have often waited until there isn't any youngsters on it before I cross.

I would definitely not recommend the swinging bridges for anyone with concerns about mobility! If steps are a consideration, those suspension bridges are out. Even for a fit person (over the age of 10 years old -haha) it is a challenge.

I mentioned The River Cafe because it is such a nice restaurant and fits in well with the idea of seeing a bit of Isla Cuale.

Hopefully the link below with photos will open to the photo I want you to see. The first photo should show an aerial of the stairs from the Malecon to the island. As you can see, they are not steep. Hopefully it helps you make a decision.

Any other photos you might see in the link are not necessarily representative of the island. Some are old, and some aren't even on the island. I just wanted you to see that aerial photo. :)

Thank you all for the information. I think for us the best option would be going from the Malecon or possibly the River Cafe by taxi, I have to look into that. Where is a good turn around place to get a taxi?

Another wonderful thing you could do is the hike up to El Mirador (cross) there’s stunning views of the city and the ocean and great exercise walking. Start at la Chata restaurant on the malecon and it will take you straight up the mountain.

Phoenix gets new flights to these 2 popular beach destinations. Here's where you can fly

travel guide puerto vallarta

American Airlines is adding more flights from Phoenix to Mexico.

The airline with the largest flight capacity at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will expand the frequency of two routes to Mexico, it said on Thursday, May 16.

The move was part of a larger announcement of expanded service in Latin America and the Caribbean on its winter 2025 schedule. American introduced new routes to these regions out of Philadelphia, New York City and Charlotte, North Carolina, while expanding service on popular routes across the nation.

American's most recent new route between Phoenix and Mexico was the nation's first nonstop flight to Tijuana , which began flying in February.

American Airlines new Phoenix-Mexico flights

American Airlines is increasing its daily service between Phoenix and these destinations in Mexico:

  • Cancun: Two daily nonstop flights starting Nov. 5.
  • Puerto Vallarta: Three daily nonstop flights starting Nov. 5.

Right now, American flies once daily between Phoenix and Cancun and twice daily between Phoenix and Puerto Vallarta.

Why is American Airlines adding flights to Mexico?

American said adding and expanding service connecting the U.S. with Latin America and the Caribbean is designed to give customers more choices for warm weather getaways.

"Customers will have more reasons to choose American than ever before for nonstop fun in the sun this year," Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning, said in a statement. "We are excited to continue growing our network to the region with more flights this winter to the Caribbean and Latin America than any other U.S. carrier ever."

American said its 2024-25 winter schedule would include 11% more departures and 10% more seats than their "record-setting" 2023-24 schedule.

More new flights from Phoenix

Travelers who prefer mountains to beaches can consider American's new route from Phoenix to Provo, Utah .

And American isn't the only airline expanding its service this year. JetBlue plans to increase flights to the East Coast from Phoenix, while Alaska Airlines is adding flights between Phoenix and Portland, Oregon .
