Puerto Vallarta Travel Guide

Puerto vallarta mexico: at a glance.

Besides beautiful beaches, Puerto Vallarta has a lot of old world charm! It was famously immortalized in the 1964 film,  The Night of The Iguana , with Richard Burton.

He, and then-wife Elizabeth Taylor ended up buying a house in Puerto Vallarta — and you can now stay in the home the two owned, the  Casa Kimberly Boutique Hotel .

  • ✈️ Airport: Puerto Vallarta International (code: PVR) ⏰ Time Zone: Central Daylight Time (GMT-5)

  • 🎫 Mexico Visa: The vast majority of travelers do not need a visa for Puerto Vallarta — this includes Americans, Canadians, Japanese and most Europeans. Head here to see if you need a Mexico travel visa.
  • 🔌 Electricity Socket : You’ll mostly find Type A (two-prong) and Type B (three-prong) — the same as used in the United States. For visitors from other countries, you’ll need this  universal travel adaptor .

  • 🚙 Car Rentals : The Mexico rental car process can be a bit daunting, and many people are apprehensive to drive in a foreign country. I get it! Check out this guide to Renting a Car in Mexico for info on the process.

What’s the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta?

travel guide puerto vallarta

For the best weather: November to March are the ideal months to travel to Puerto Vallarta. This is, of course, the high season or busy season in Puerto Vallarta, so expect higher price tags and larger crowds.

Puerto Vallarta Shoulder Season: March to May is the shoulder season in Puerto Vallarta — a magical time when the weather is still nice, and the prices are still low. Note: Expect large crowds during Easter and Semana Santa (Holy Week).

For the best value: May to September will get you the most bang for your buck! However, know these months can be rainy, hot, humid and buggy. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountains, mosquitoes are an issue in Puerto Vallarta, especially in the summers, so don’t forget your eco-friendly bug spray 🦟

⛈ Note: June 1 to November 30 is the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Located on the Pacific Ocean (Banderas Bay), Puerto Vallarta is susceptible, though direct-hit hurricanes in Puerto Vallarta are rare.

Where is Puerto Vallarta located?

Puerto Vallarta is in central Mexico, and sits on the Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), an inlet just off the Pacific Ocean. It is about five hours east of Guadalajara , and about one hour southeast of Sayulita and the Riviera Nayarit.

What state is Puerto Vallarta Mexico in?

Puerto Vallarta is in Jalisco state . This is one of Mexico Pacific States, along with others like Oaxaca and Guerrero. Besides visiting Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, you’ll find other great things to do in neighboring Nayarit state. What’s the closest airport to Puerto Vallarta?

There is an airport in Puerto Vallarta — Puerto Vallarta International (code: PVR) — located only about 30 minutes from the Zona Romantica and Viejo Vallarta (Downtown). If you’re staying in the Puerto Vallarta Marina, it’s closer to 15-20 minutes.

What’s the best way to get to Puerto Vallarta?

islas marietas, hidden beach in mexico

The Puerto Vallarta Airport is one of the biggest airports in Mexico, and you can find direct flights to Puerto Vallarta from many places all over the world.

The easiest, safest and best way to get from Puerto Vallarta Airport to your hotel is via private shuttle service , but you can also catch a taxi, Uber, bus or other public transportation.

🚕💨 Note: If you’re planning to take Uber, make sure you have a Mexico SIM Card so you can call one. Trust me on this, the free Puerto Vallarta Airport WiFi is always spotty, so you’ll need data to call your Uber.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe?

According to experts, you are statistically quite safe while visiting Mexico. In fact, Puerto Vallarta is known as one of the safest cities in Mexico .

Millions of Americans go to Mexico on vacation every year, so if we play the numbers game, the number of incidents is very small… When I’m asked if Mexico is a safe place to go travel on vacation, my response is  yes . —Carlos Barron, FBI Veteran (source:  Forbes )

That’s not to say bad things don’t happen in Puerto Vallarta; they do. As with traveling anywhere, follow general travel safety like not walking home alone at night, watching your alcohol consumption and staying aware of yourself and surroundings.

For an added safety measure, pack these  travel safety items , dress in a way so your Mexico outfits blend in with the locals, and buy a Mexico SIM card .

Some other less-obvious things you’ll want to watch out for in Puerto Vallarta are dehydration, sunburns, mosquitoes and hangovers! Puerto Vallarta is hot year-round, and the mosquitoes are pretty bad in the summers. Speaking of summer, this is the Atlantic Hurricane Season, and Puerto Vallarta is susceptible.

What’s the best travel insurance for Mexico?

travel insurance for mexico paperwork

This is a question I get a lot as a Mexico travel writer and Mexico expat. To determine which Mexico travel insurance is best for you , consider factors like the policy’s total cost, your deductible, the coverage you need, your medical benefits, etc.

🏆 In general, I only ever recommend three companies to purchase Mexico travel insurance from:

  • World Nomads — For general travelers and adventure travelers.
  • SafetyWing — For general travelers and digital nomads in Mexico.
  • Travel Insurance Master — Mexico travel insurance search tool, for those who want to compare policies.

Is Puerto Vallarta Safe in 2024? Here’s What You Need to Know

the westin puerto vallarta reviews

My HONEST REVIEW of The Westin Puerto Vallarta in 2024

Puerto vallarta travel guide: frequently asked questions, can you drink the water in puerto vallarta mexico.

No — Unfiltered Mexico tap water is not safe for human consumption. However, you will need to keep drinking water and to stay extra hydrated, as Mexico is quite close to the Equator. In fact, dehydration is one of the most common ways people get sick in Mexico.

So what can you do?

  • If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, you can boil the water before drinking it.
  • You can keep buying bottled water — Though this gets expensive, and is horrible for the planet!
  • Use the Water-To-Go Filterable Bottle . This refillable bottle not only keeps you hydrated, but also filters your water so you don’t get sick in Mexico, and is good for the planet ♻️ Get 15% OFF with code SOLO15!

water bottles

The Water-To-Go Bottle has a built-in, three-stage filtration system that removes 99.9999% of all water-borne contaminants. These include bacteria, microplastics, viruses, heavy metals, chemicals and more. I personally own one, as you can drink Mexico water from any source (even the tap), and be completely safe.

What’s the Puerto Vallarta weather like?

puerto vallarta weather chart

Puerto Vallarta has a tropical climate — meaning you can expect warm and hot temperatures year-round, and heavy rains throughout the summer.

In the summers, temperatures hover around 95°F (35°C), though can feel hotter because of the humidity. For the best weather in Puerto Vallarta, visit between November to May.

How many days do I need in Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta isn’t a huge town — but you’ll still want at least four full days to see it all. However, if you want to explore the surrounding areas on some Puerto Vallarta day trips, you’ll want five full days; but of course: The longer the better!

This Puerto Vallarta Itinerary has options for planning the ultimate 3 days in Puerto Vallarta, 4 days in Puerto Vallarta or 5 days in Puerto Vallarta travel itinerary.

Is Puerto Vallarta expensive?

It depends — When comparing Puerto Vallarta to other beach towns in Mexico, it’s about average. Mid-range hotels in Puerto Vallarta cost about $100 USD per night, but you can save money by eating street tacos for 50¢ each; there’s Uber to get around, but also inexpensive public transportation.

Is Puerto Vallarta worth visiting?

Yes — Puerto Vallarta is one of the top beach towns in Mexico. However, there is so much more to it that makes Puerto Vallarta worth visiting. Besides beautiful beaches, Puerto Vallarta has a lot of old world charm — famously immortalized in the 1964 film,  The Night of The Iguana .

With the beaches along with the Bahía Banderas (Bay of Banderas) to one side, and the Sierra Madre mountain range on the other, this town will appeal to beach goers and adrenaline junkies alike. For some adventure travel in Puerto Vallarta, there are ATV Jungle Tours and Zip Line Excursions .

🗣 Mexico Language

Mexico Fun Fact : There’s actually no official language of Mexico!

Spanish is the most widely-spoken, so some mistakenly say Spanish is the official language of Mexico. However, the government actually recognizes 68 national languages, including the Nahuatl Aztec language, and the Maya language.

💰 Mexico Currency

Mexican Peso — Exchange rates vary, but have hovered around $18-21 pesos to $1 USD for about the last decade. You will find some places that take U.S. dollars, but usually at an unfavorable rate, so stick to using pesos in Mexico .

☀️ Mexico Weather

Mexico is a big country — the 7th largest on Earth, in fact! It’s hard to generalize the weather in Mexico, because it will vary greatly by where you’re traveling.

In general, temperatures are mostly mild everywhere all year long, though summers on the coast are hot and humid, and winters in Central and Northern Mexico are on the colder side. Throughout the whole country, the rainy season runs from (about) April through September.

✈️ Mexico Busy Season & Slow Season

• Mexico Busy Season: The busy season in Mexico runs October to March, as this is the dry season and you’ll get the best weather. December is the busiest month for tourism in Mexico.

• Mexico Slow Season : If you don’t mind some rain, you’ll often find the best travel deal during the Mexico slow season of April to September. Do keep in mind that June 1-November 1 is Hurricane Season, and Mexico beaches are all susceptible.

• Mexico Shoulder Season : The shoulder season is that magical time when prices are still low and the weather is good. The Mexico shoulder season is from about mid-October to November and January to early-April.

Check out this Ultimate Packing List for Mexico — so you know what to pack and what NOT to pack for Mexico! This article offers advice on packing for Mexico cities, and packing for a Mexico beach vacation.

Beyond what Mexico outfits and clothing you’ll want to bring, here are a few extra things to consider:

• Filterable Water Bottle: Mexico is close to the Equator, so you’ll need to stay extra hydrated. In fact, dehydration is one of the most common ways people get sick in Mexico.

A filterable, refillable water bottle not only keeps you hydrated, but also filters your water so you don’t get sick in Mexico.

The Water-To-Go Bottle has a built-in, three-stage filtration system that removes 99.9999% of all water-borne contaminants. These include bacteria, microplastics, viruses, heavy metals and chemicals.

• Mexico SIM Card: Want to be able to use your phone in Mexico?! Of course you do! Pick up a TELCEL Mexico SIM card before your trip, and swap it out on the plane while you’re waiting to exit, so you have phone and data service the second you arrive in Mexico.

•  Anti-Hangover Meds: Planning to party hardy?! Make sure you’re not wasting any of your precious travel time with a hangover. Liquid I.V. has about 70,000 reviews on Amazon, and is considered the best defense against a hangover.

•  Sun Hat: No matter if you’re headed to the beach or a city, you’ll want to wear a hat to shield yourself from the strong Mexican sun. This cute sun hat is the perfect stylish and practical accessory for your Mexico vacation.

•   Sunscreen: As you’ll want to reapply a few times throughout the day, a light, Mineral-Based Sunscreen is ideal.

Headed to the beach? Do your part to practice responsible tourism in Mexico by only using an eco-friendly reef safe sunscreen while swimming. You can even ditch the sunscreen altogether and opt for a long sleeve swimsuit (AKA rash guard) instead.

•   Bug Repellent: Mosquitoes are common throughout Mexico — especially on the beaches! REPEL Insect Repellent is an eco-friendly brand that’s DEET-free and plant based, with a pleasant lemon and eucalyptus scent. Don’t want to use a spray? Pick up some Mosquito Repellent Bracelets .

The vast majority of travelers do not need a visa for Mexico — this includes Americans, Canadians, and most Europeans. Head here to see if you need a Mexico travel visa.

🤔 What is the mexico FMM ?

When you go through Customs & Immigration to enter the country, you’ll receive your Forma Migratoria Multiple , or FMM Tourist Card (sometimes listed as FMT). If you’re coming by plane or cruise ship, there is no charge; for those driving across the border, the FMM costs about $30USD.

In most circumstances, all visitors get a 180-day (six month) visa — so you can legally stay up to six months!

🚨 Have your FMM on you at all times

Keep in mind that though it’s called an FMM card , it’s actually just a small piece of paper. Keep your FMM on you at all times in your wallet, as this proves your legal status in Mexico. It’s rare, but if an officer stops you, they can ask to see your FMM.

🎫 Don’t lose your FMM!

You need to have your FMM on you at all times, as proof of your legal status in the country.

Be sure to keep track of your FMM, as you’ll have to give it back to an Immigration officer at the airport, cruise port, or land crossing when you’re leaving the country.

If you lose your FMM, there is a $600 peso ($30 USD) cost to replace it, and some paperwork you’ll need to fill out before you can leave the country.

If you’re flying home, plan to arrive at the airport about one hour earlier than you normally would to do the paperwork and pay the fine.

As this question doesn’t have a yes/no answer ( I wish it did! ), I do my best to answer it in depth in this article, Is Mexico Safe for Travelers Right Now ? However, for the most part, Mexico is actually statistically quite safe for all travelers — including solo travelers.

As a general rule, you’ll want to know at least a few words of Spanish when visiting anywhere in Mexico. This is both a sign of respect, and will also help you have a better, smoother trip.

If you stick to the more touristic places in Mexico, you should be fine with basic Spanish. For those planning to venture off the beaten path, be advised most people in pueblos  (small towns) speak little to no English.

🗣 Here are some options:

  • Brush up on your Spanish: Use a language-learning program like Rocket Spanish , so you’re confident, and conversational, before your trip.
  • Download the Google Translate App: For this to work at all times, you’ll need a Mexico SIM card with data — as the app won’t work when you’re off-WiFi.
  • Travel with a Mexico phrasebook: This Lonely Planet Spanish Phrasebook is an Amazon best seller, and a great non-digital language assistant!
  • Save this infographic an image on your phone. This way, you have access to these common words, phrases and questions, even when you’re off-WiFi.

Your Trip to Puerto Vallarta: The Complete Guide

travel guide puerto vallarta

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast in the northwest corner of the state of Jalisco , Puerto Vallarta rings Mexico's largest natural bay, the Bahia de Banderas (Bay of Flags). This popular beach resort area is one of the main ports of call for Mexican Riviera cruises, has a well-deserved reputation as a foodie destination, and is also home to a wide variety of natural and cultural attractions.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : December through March is the best time, with excellent weather and fun activities including opportunities for whale watching.

Language: The most spoken language is Spanish, although many people working in the tourism industry speak English, and some of the indigenous people may speak Nahuatl or Huichol.

Currency: The local currency is the Mexican peso. Some upscale establishments offering goods and services to tourists list prices in US dollars and the symbol ($) is the same as the dollar sign, so if there's any doubt, enquire what currency prices are listed in.

Getting Around: Both taxis and Ubers are plentiful and economical, and public buses are convenient for longer journeys, and in town can be a good option for budget travelers.

Travel Tip: The best time to visit is also the most crowded (especially during holidays such as Christmas and Easter). For good weather and fewer crowds, visit in October and November or April and May.

In Puerto Vallarta, you can take it easy on the beach or fill your days exploring the city's historic center, given Cultural Heritage status by the state of Jalisco —it's entirely up to you. Either way, you’ll want to enjoy the city’s outstanding food scene wherever you go. Here are a few activities to enjoy:

  • Take a stroll along the Malecon to see the collection of sculptures. In the evenings, buskers here entertain passers-by.
  • Enjoy Puerto Vallarta's many beaches , eight of which are Blue Flag-certified . Check out a beach club such as Mantamar Beach Club where you can soak in the hip, upbeat vibe, or visit some of the best beaches located to the south of the city, many which are only accessible by sea.
  • Make a visit to Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden , where you can discover the exuberant flora and fauna of the area and take a dip in the Horcones River.
  • Go shopping for local art and handicrafts, such as the beadwork of the Huichol indigenous people, or hit the mall for some window shopping.
  • Get an adrenaline rush on an extreme adventure like riding an ATV or zip-lining through the Sierra Madre.
  • Treat yourself to a spa treatment at one of Puerto Vallarta’s excellent spas .
  • In the evening, find a spot on the Malecón or a beachside restaurant to enjoy Puerto Vallarta's beautiful sunsets.

What to Eat and Drink

Puerto Vallarta is well known as a foodie destination in Mexico , with its annual gourmet festival steadily gaining recognition internationally. Whether it’s at a street food stand selling tacos al pastor , a beachside palapa restaurant offering up the catch of the day, or a fine dining establishment serving haute cuisine, Puerto Vallarta offers some of the best food experiences you’ll find anywhere. Take a street food tour to discover all the wonderful street food and low-key dining options, or enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta's upscale restaurants like Café des Artistes or Trio .

When it comes to drink, Puerto Vallarta also has a lot to offer. It’s located in the state of Jalisco, just about four hours drive from the town of Tequila , so you’ll find many opportunities to sample this popular Mexican spirit—and there are even some places where you can see how it’s made. Another drink that is also made from the agave plant but has only recently gained popularity is raicilla, known by many as “Mexican moonshine,” it has recently been legalized. Puerto Vallarta's craft beer scene is gaining ground, and you can try some of the locally produced brews at Los Muertos Brewing or La Cerveceria Union . And of course at any of the many bars and nightclubs you'll find all the standard international drinks as well.

Check out some of our favorite Puerto Vallarta restaurants .

Where to Stay

There are a great many choices of hotels and resorts in Puerto Vallarta, in all price ranges and for all tastes. Some popular choices for both couples and families include the large resorts Marriott Puerto Vallarta and The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta . For an adult-only boutique stay, consider Casa Velas near the Marina, or Villa Premiere in the center of town. Fans of old Hollywood may want to book a stay at Hotel Rosita , where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed while filming "The Night of the Iguana." Airbnbs are becoming more common, and can be a good choice for families. Budget travelers have been flocking to the well-located Posada de Roger for decades.

Check out our recommendations for the best Puerto Vallarta hotels .

Getting There

The most common way to get to Puerto Vallarta is by air, arriving at Puerto Vallarta's Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (airport code PVR). There are also many visitors who arrive on cruise ships, as Puerto Vallarta is a popular port of call for cruises of the Mexican Riviera. Cruise ships dock at the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal, which can accommodate three full-size cruise ships. If coming by land, travelers can get to Puerto Vallarta from Guadalajara by bus in under five hours. The bus line ETN offers first-class service.

Culture and Customs

There are a few cultural differences and customs that you should be aware of in Puerto Vallarta. One thing that you may notice is timeshare salespeople and vendors who may come across as excessively pushy and aggressive when trying to get your attention. This is something that Mexicans and frequent visitors get used to and learn to block out. Here are some strategies you can use for dealing with pushy vendors .

Mexican mealtimes may be on a different schedule from what you're used to, with the main meal of the day taken in the afternoon between 2 and 4 p.m. In restaurants, the server will not bring you the bill until you request it. Ask for “ la cuenta, por favor, ” or make a sign of writing in the air. Usually the tip (“ propina ” in Spanish) is not included, and you should add 10 to 20 percent depending on the quality of service. Tipping is customary in bars and restaurants, but not so much in food stalls and markets (though always appreciated). It's also customary to tip bellhops and cleaning staff at your hotel.

There’s no need to break the bank on a trip to Puerto Vallarta. If you stick to a budget hotel or Airbnb, ride city buses, eat at economical restaurants and street food stands, and avoid taking high priced tours, you’ll find it can be a very inexpensive destination. Here are some other things you can do to save money:

  • Have a large breakfast, which is usually the cheapest meal of the day, then for a late lunch opt for a multi-course " comida corrida " fixed price meal. In the evening, a couple of tacos or other inexpensive street eats will suffice.
  • Find alternative transportation methods. For example, the water taxi from the Los Muertos pier to the beaches south of Puerto Vallarta can be pretty pricey, but you can cut the cost in half if you take the city bus to Boca de Tomatlan and get a boat from there.
  • There are plenty of free things to do in Puerto Vallarta. Strolling along the Malecón you’ll see art and will likely run into some performance to watch. The vast majority of the beaches are public and you can enjoy them without any cost if you bring whatever you need with you.
  • Instead of buying drinks at restaurants or bars, head to a local store to buy your water or cold cervezas, you'll find they cost a fraction of the price, and you can find a nice spot to enjoy them on the beach or in your hotel.
  • The main nightly show, the sunset, is free for all and a wonderful way to enjoy Puerto Vallarta.

Why Go To Puerto Vallarta

This is more than just a coastal resort getaway. Somehow Puerto Vallarta – also known as "Vallarta" or just "PV" – maintains a small-town atmosphere, while still boasting one of the most unique and sophisticated oceanfronts in Mexico. The dining options and the hotel choices reflect more of the same – you'll find both elegance and efficiency mingled together within the hotel and restaurant areas.

Most people associate this west coast town with its boundaries – the Banderas Bay that snakes along the coast or the palm tree-lined Sierra Madre mountains that stand tall in the east – but Puerto Vallarta is more than its scenery. Take some time to discover its other perks for yourself by sampling the delicious food, discovering a hidden boutique in the Zona Romantica , sipping a signature cocktail at a bar along the Malecón  or dancing to a salsa beat in a Havana -style nightclub. When you want a little guidance exploring beyond your resort, sign up for one of the best Puerto Vallarta tours . And if you like to cruise, you'll be delighted to know that deals can be found year-round to this destination.

Puerto Vallarta Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is between April and June when the weather is pleasant and the room rates are affordable. During these months, rain is scarce and there are fewer tourists compared to the winter high season. If you're interested in whale watching, however, visit from December to March. Just prepare yourself for the area's most astronomical travel fares.

Weather in Puerto Vallarta

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

PV's a haven for timeshares You'll want to avoid the timeshare reps that circle the airport, the beach and even the restaurants. That is, unless you're willing to give up several hours of your vacation listening to a sales pitch.

PV's a haven for LGBTQ travelers This town is recognized as the gay beach capital of Mexico. Zona Romantica is the best neighborhood for gay nightlife and many of that area's condos, hotels and bed-and-breakfast accommodations are LGBTQ friendly.

PV's a haven for artists As evidenced by the elaborate sand sculptures lining the Malecón or the beautiful ceramics and paintings in the art galleries. There are clusters of galleries and art walks in El Centro, Zona Romantica and Bucerias .

How to Save Money in Puerto Vallarta

Buy a map  Taking the bus or a taxi around town is cheap in theory, but in practice, you could end up covering extra ground and paying unnecessary fares if you don't know where you're going.

Pack an umbrella  If you don't mind the frequent (but short) rain showers, then plan your visit for late summer. Just don't forget to bring your umbrella or a light rain jacket.

Just say no  From the beach vendors that stroll along Banderas Bay to the timeshare representatives that stroll along just about everywhere, there are plenty of ways to let go of more money than you intended. Learn to say a firm but courteous, " No, gracias ," if you're not interested in what they're selling.

Culture & Customs

Spanish is the primary language spoken, but many people – especially those who work in the tourist zone – speak English. It may be both helpful and respectful to know some basic Spanish vocabulary, such as "hello" ( hola ), "goodbye" ( adíos ), "please" ( por favor ) and "thank you" ( gracias ).

Puerto Vallarta's official currency is the Mexican peso. Since the Mexican peso to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the current exchange rate is before you go. American dollars are, however, widely accepted in Puerto Vallarta.

What to Eat

As is the case with neighboring Mexican and Caribbean vacation destinations, Puerto Vallarta's dining scene can be as narrow or expansive as you like, depending on how willing you are to venture off the grounds of your all-inclusive resort . From food carts to European fine dining establishments, PV's cuisine runs the gamut. For a crash course in the bold regional flavors that define the city, consider signing up for a food tour – Vallarta Food Tours comes highly recommended for its variety of experiences and knowledgeable and engaging guides. One of its most popular is An Evening Taco Adventure, which explores the night street foods of Vallarta. If you'd rather take your own self-guided tour, you may want to head over to Food Park, where you'll find a collection of food trucks, along with live music and a DJ on the weekends.

Of course, no visit to Mexico would be complete without a sunset dinner on the beach. For that, travelers and experts recommend La Palapa Restaurant . Sitting pretty on Playa Los Muertos , this family-run eatery serves what it calls "tropical Mexican cuisine" that combines combines Mexican, Asian and French flavors. If you're on the hunt for an upscale setting with a sophisticated menu to match, Barcelona Tapas , La Leche and the award-winning Café Des Artistes both come highly recommended.

The drug and gang violence that has afflicted much of Mexico in the past several years has not greatly affected Puerto Vallarta. That said, be sure to check U.S. State Department travel advisories before heading to Puerto Vallarta or anywhere in Mexico. Most of the dangers in Puerto Vallarta involve swimming and food safety. Never swim by yourself or without the supervision of a lifeguard. Travelers should also note that the surf is rougher in the days following rain or a thunderstorm, so proceed with caution after bad weather. If you're going hiking or walking in the wilderness, wear long pants and shoes to prevent serious injury from snake bites.

Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

The best way to get around Puerto Vallarta is by bus – there are plenty of stops and the fares are cheap. If you're looking for a less bumpy ride (though not by much) you can also take a taxi or an Uber. The bus is also the best means of getting from PV's Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) to the hotel zones. Renting a car is also an option, but you'll pay hefty fees for the privilege. To really get a feel for Puerto Vallarta's neighborhoods , you'll want to rely on your own two feet, especially in areas like the Zona Romantica .

Most travelers arrive via airplane or cruise ship. The cruise ship terminal sits about 3 miles north of downtown Puerto Vallarta. Meanwhile, the Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is located about 3 miles south of downtown. Expect a taxi ride from the airport to the Hotel Zone to start at around $26.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Citizens of the United States need a passport to visit Mexico. Travelers must also carry a Mexican Tourist Permit, which is usually issued free of charge upon arrival. Any additional fees for the tourist permit are usually absorbed in the cost of your plane ticket. Be sure to hold onto this card throughout your trip, as you will need to present it upon departure. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department's website .

Puerto Vallarta has incredible beaches, restaurants, shopping and nightlife – it's the ultimate Mexican vacation .

One Week in Puerto Vallarta Mexico: Easy 7 Day Itinerary

' src=

Puerto Vallarta is a stunning, tropical destination on the Pacific coast of Mexico. With sandy beaches, lush forests, and a vibrant town, one week in Puerto Vallarta is a perfect for girl’s trips, family vacations or spring break.

I have traveled to Puerto Vallarta with my family multiple times and it never disappoints. We typically split our time between the pool with a cocktail and outdoor adventures.

Additionally, we explore new restaurants each night to enjoy the local and international cuisine around town. Just writing this guide is making me want to book another trip back!

Follow this travel guide to learn how to perfectly navigate your getaway and spend one week in Puerto Vallarta.

One Week Puerto Vallarta Itinerary

Tambyana beach club Roatan

This Puerto Vallarta travel guide will go in depth into what to do, where to stay, the best restaurants, and travel tips. However, let’s start with an easy 7 day itinerary for Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta Itinerary – Day 1: Hotel Check in and Pool Time

I’ll mention this a few times in this guide, but I truly believe you should schedule relaxation into your Puerto Vallarta vacation. With such beautiful beaches and pools, it’s ok to spend time just lounging with a cocktail.

For the first day of your Puerto Vallarta itinerary, check in to your hotel then spend the rest of the day relaxing at the beach or pool.

For dinner, venture to the marina or downtown for a good meal and some light sightseeing.

Day 2: Private Boat Tour

My favorite thing to do in Puerto Vallarta is taking a private boat tour . There are many great water activities in Puerto Vallarta and this private tour allows you to do them all in one day.

Spend your second day in Puerto Vallarta looking for marine animals such as whales and dolphins, snorkeling, and swimming in Bandera’s Bay.

Day 3: Beach Day & Night at the Malecon

As I said, be sure to spend plenty of time at the beach. Start day 3 at your resort with your toes in the sand.

In the afternoon, visit downtown Puerto Vallarta. Spend a few hours shopping at the local boutiques. Then, wander the Malecon, where you will see street performers, food vendors, and local artisans.

Day 4: Explore Puerto Vallarta’s Jungle

For the halfway point of this Puerto Vallarta itinerary, head into the jungle. A great way to get amazing views of the jungle is one a ziplining tour .

Zip through the canopy of the trees and take in the views of the lush jungle and bright blue coastline.

Day 5: Taste of Puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a must-see destination for all foodies. Its unique mix of Latin American and Mexican cuisine can’t be found anywhere else. For day 5, take yourself on a DIY Puerto Vallarta food tour.

With so many incredible restaurants, it’s hard to know where to start. Here’s a four stop DIY food tour of downtown Puerto Vallarta that will make sure you get the full range of this amazing city’s flavors: Stop 1 – Casa Nicole : For breakfast, head to Casa Nicole Ristorante and try their chilaquiles. This classic dish of fried tortillas smothered in green or red salsa is served with crema and queso fresco.

Stop 2 – La Leche: For lunch, wander over to La Leche and try their camarones al mojo de ajo. Battered shrimp are cooked in garlic butter for an indulgent yet light seafood dish. Stop 3 – Pancho’s Tacos: For the first part of dinner, go to Pancho’s Tacos for the best tacos in the city. The al pastor is my favorite. Stop 4 – Las Flamas: To finish off your night, get yourself an order of flautas at Las Flamas. Their signature rolled tacos are filled with savory fillings like pork, beef or vegetables and served up with guacamole and lime wedges.

Day 6: Puerto Vallarta ATV Tour

One of my favorite adventures in Puerto Vallarta is an ATV tour. For your final activity, I highly recommend this private ATV tour that visits the beach, mountain, and rivers.

The views are amazing and you’ll get a bit of an adrenaline rush.

Since this is only a half-day tour, you can use the afternoon to hit any other items on your Puerto Vallarta bucket list.

Day 7: Final Day of Relaxation

For the last day of your week in Puerto Vallarta, I recommend a final day of relaxation. There’s nothing worse than going home and needing a vacation from your vacation.

Schedule at least a half day for pool or beach time. Spend your last moment in Puerto Vallarta soaking in the sun and amazing ocean views.

If you are interested in more sightseeing, head to downtown for a walking tour. Here are some of the best places to see:

Self-Guided Downtown Puerto Vallarta Walking Tour

Stop 1: Plaza de Armas (Main Square)

  • Begin your tour at Plaza de Armas, the central square of Puerto Vallarta.
  • Admire the iconic Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with its crown-topped tower.

2: El Malecón (The Boardwalk)

  • Stroll along El Malecón, the picturesque oceanfront boardwalk.
  • Discover the vibrant art installations and sculptures that line the path.

3: Los Muertos Beach

  • Walk south along the Malecón to reach Los Muertos Beach, the heart of the Romantic Zone also known as the Zona Romantica.

4: Basilio Badillo Street

  • Head inland to Basilio Badillo Street, known as the “Restaurant Row” of Puerto Vallarta.
  • Discover an array of charming shops, art galleries, and eateries.

5: Olas Altas Street

  • Continue on Olas Altas Street, lined with historic buildings and boutiques.
  • Visit the Lazaro Cardenas Park, a popular spot for cultural events and outdoor performances.

6: Molino de Agua and the Cuale River Island

  • Cross the Cuale River using the pedestrian bridge.
  • Visit Molino de Agua, a residential complex with beautiful gardens and water features.
  • Explore Cuale River Island’s cultural center, shops, and the flea market (if open).

What to do in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has activities for everyone. There are beautiful pools and beaches for the laid-back traveler.

Adventurous travelers can head to the jungle for adrenaline-filled activities. Foodies and culture enthusiasts can tour the streets and partake in food tours for an immersive experience.

For this guide to Puerto Vallarta, I recommend mixing a bit of relaxation with adventure to enjoy all that PV has to offer without needing a vacation from your vacation.

Snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta

A staple Puerto Vallarta activity is snorkeling. South of the town are some great coral reefs and coves with plentiful fish.

I highly recommend this private boat charte r, so you can tailor the trip to your own preferences. The crew will likely know of less common locations to provide a more personal experience.

This private tour typically includes sightseeing from the boat, snorkeling, and a private lunch on the beach. However, since it’s private, you can adjust the itinerary to your preferences.

Check prices and availability of this private snorkeling tour

2. Puerto vallarta ATV Tour

When people think about Puerto Vallarta, they often think of the ocean and beach. However, the jungle is equally as beautiful and fun.

A great way to explore the jungle in Puerto Vallarta is an ATV tour . This private ATV tour takes you through the mountains, rivers, and beach of Puerto Vallarta.

As you cover the diverse terrain, your private guide will teach you about the area, geology, and answer any of your questions. If you haven’t done an ATV your before, I highly encourage you to try this one!

Check prices and availability for this ATV tour in Puerto Vallarta

3. Luxury Sailing to Banderas Bay

You cannot visit this beautiful beach town with stunning views of the water without getting out on the ocean.

Situated an hour boat ride from the Marina is Banderas Bay, a secluded cove with a private restaurant. This is a fun spot to take a dip, swim to the beach or visit the exclusive restaurant.

This luxury sailing tour will take you to Banderas bay with time for swimming and snorkeling. It will also travel around to find whales, dolphins, or other wildlife sightseeing.

The tour includes lunch, snacks, and all beverages. I love how this tour includes food, sightseeing, and relaxation so your entire day is basically planned for you. Also, since it’s on a luxury sailboat, you won’t be overcrowded with other tourists.

Check the price and availability of this Puerto Vallarta sailing tour

4. Ziplining in Puerto Vallarta Jungle

Something that makes Puerto Vallarta unique to some other destinations in Mexico is the juxtaposition of the clear waters and jungle. When you fly into Puerto Vallarta, look out the window to get an idea of how lush this area really is.

A fun way to explore the Puerto Vallarta jungle is on a ziplining tour . Although ziplining may seem scary, your fears will quickly subside once you see the beautiful views from the canopy.

My boyfriend is severely afraid of flights and highly recommends ziplining!

This zipline tour takes you above the canopy of the jungle along 10 different lines. From the ziplines, you will have views of the jungle and the ocean. After the tour, relax your nerves with a complimentary tequila tasting.

Check availability of this ziplining tour

5. Walk the Malecon at Night

Malecon Puerto Vallarta

For a dose of culture, head downtown to the Malecon boardwalk. This stretch next to the beach is full of shops, restaurants, and fun street vendors. There are vendors offering local crafts, tasty foods, and entertainment. I recommend finding an elote vendor and trying this local street food dish.

The street truly comes alive at night, with crowds of people and the most vendors. With this vibrancy comes a risk of crime so be sure to keep an eye on your purse and pockets.

Tip : To get a taxi to drop you off at the end of the Malecon, ask to be dropped off at McDonalds. They will know where you are talking about and this location sets you up for a perfect walk.

6. Fishing Tour

Fishing in Puerto Vallarta

One fun water activity in Puerto Vallarta is fishing. Some fish such as tuna can easily be caught near shore and larger fish such as mahi or marlin can be pursued in the deeper waters.

There are also combo tours that include fishing with other activities such as snorkeling or swimming.

7. Pool day

Mexico pool day

As I mentioned above, be sure to include relaxation in your Puerto Vallarta itinerary so you go home rested. Some essentials to pack for a pool day are: Sunscreen : Be sure to bring plenty of high SPF sunscreen . The sun is intense in Mexico and will burn you more than you expect.

Sun Hat: Along the same lines, the sun is strong so protect your face with a comfortable sun hat.

Water bottle: As mentioned above, be sure to drink bottled water, not tap water. I like bringing an insulated water bottle to pour the filtered water into to keep it cold all day.

Fun Poolside Cocktails for Mexico:

Since you are bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated, you deserve some fun adult drinks as well. Some of my favorites are listed below. Always ask the bartender what they recommend for some fun and different options.

Miami Vice: A layered mix of pina colada and strawberry daquiri. You can make this fruity sweet drink at home by following this recipe .

Painkiller: A Caribbean classic, this mix of rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, coconut cream and nutmeg is super refreshing. I love this recipe to make it at home.

Blended White Russian: If you choose to get started drinking early (no judgement), this frothy mix of vodka, Kahlua and heavy cream is a great way to start your day. Find an easy recipe here .

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a wide range of accommodation options from hostels to all inclusive resorts to 5 star luxury properties. My favorite area to stay in Puerto Vallarta is the marina. There are many great restaurants and things to do, and it’s a short drive to downtown.

Below are the best resorts in Marina Vallarta and the luxury area of Punta Mita.

Where to stay in Marina Vallarta

As mentioned above, the Marina Vallarta area is ideal for people seeking luxury close to downtown. Marina Vallarta is located ten minutes from the international airport and thirty minutes from the downtown area, making it a great location for your trip.

Mid-Range Hotel: Marriott

Marriot hotel in Puerto Vallarta

This Marriott delivers above and beyond for its price point. Located within walking distance of the Marina, the Marriot is a great option for families and couples looking for affordable luxury.

The newly renovated pool area features stunning poolside cabanas, a swim up bar, and a relaxing tropical atmosphere. The pool and beachside day beds can be rented for those seeking a special experience. Otherwise, guests can park themselves in a pool chair and soak up a day of sun and relaxation.

The property has 6 restaurants and a coffee shop offering a range of food options including seafood, Japanese, a sports bar and traditional Mexican. There is also a fitness center and spa for guests to enjoy.

Luxury Hotel: Casa Velas

Another great option for where to stay in Marina Vallarta is the all-inclusive hotel Casa Velas . This hotel delivers on its higher price point and caters to adults only. This luxury Puerto Vallarta resort has ranked in the top resorts in PV by Trip Advisor and its no question why.

Each room at this resort is a suite with an upscale approach to traditional Mexican design. Larger suites offer private plunge pools for ultimate luxury.

As an all-inclusive resort, Casa Velas includes all food, drinks, transportation and some activities in the base room cost. The dining offered is a gourmet Mexican restaurant, fun pool bar, beach club bar and in suite dining.

Luxury Resorts Near Puerto Vallarta

Delta Riviera tonani beach club

For ultimate luxury and name-brand properties, head out of Puerto Vallarta to the neighboring town of Punta Mita. While this Puerto Vallarta guide does not cover what to do in Punta Mita, the below resorts are too amazing to not mention.

Delta Riviera Nayarit

The Delta by Marriott is a relaxing all-inclusive resort in the fishing town of Riviera Nayarit. The resort is situated in the jungle and ahs three pools, three restaurants and a water park on property. The resort also has exclusive access to a beach club.

The Delta Riviera Nayarit is a great, affordable, all inclusive resort option if you are looking for a very relaxing vacation. I wrote all about my experience staying at the Delta if you are interested.

St Regis Punta Mita

This 22 acre beachfront property will cater to all your needs. It features a world-class spa, golf course and adventurous watersports. There are also six restaurant options and a beautiful pool area. Take advantage of the iconic St Regis butler service to relax throughout your trip.

Four Seasons Punta Mita

Four Seasons properties are world-renowned for their luxury and fine touches; this property lives up to that expectation. This picturesque property is centered around the beautiful pool area and lazy river. Escape to this resort to escape reality and focus on elevated Mexican cuisine, culture and experiences.

What to Wear in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Beach and pool outfit ideas, swimsuits, cover up, beach bags, flip flops

Puerto Vallarta is a very tropical, beachy destination. Be sure to pack plenty of swimwear so you will always have a dry suit for the pool or beach. A beach bag and sandals are also a must.

For the day time, casual sundresses or shirts and shorts are very appropriate. Be sure to pack a versatile and comfortable pair of sandals.

Finally, dinner and nightlife in Puerto Vallarta is quite casual. I enjoy dressings gup a bit with a long sundress and casual heels. However, you can get away with wearing shorts and a tee to most restaurants in downtown.

I know packing for vacation can be stressful, so I wrote an entire guide dedicated to outfit ideas for Puerto Vallarta.

Where to Eat in Puerto Vallarta

A guide to Puerto Vallarta would not be complete without mentioning where to eat in Puerto Vallarta. Specifically, where to eat in Marina Vallarta and downtown.

Where to Eat in Marina Vallarta

La terrazza di roma.

Wow, an Italian place in Mexico? Trust me, this place is delicious, the service is incredible and the ambiance is beautiful. This overwater restaurant features classic Italian fare with fun drink options.

I recommend ordering a bottle of wine for the table. The prices are extremely low for the quality of global wines. I also recommend ordering anything from the pasta section of the menu and have personally love the four-cheese rigatoni, arrabiata, and shrimp garlic pasta.

If you are more of a pizza person, share one of the generous portions or get your own and enjoy leftovers for breakfast.

Victors Place Café Tacuba

Victors is rated #1 on yelp for restaurants in the Marina due to the amazing service and abundant freebies. While this is a must-visit location, I do not recommend coming for the food. The food is average at best but the drinks and people are top-notch.

I recommend ordering a margarita, Miami vice or Mexican coffee if you are visiting for dessert. Each visitor will be treated to a round of mezcal shots on the house which makes this restaurant truly memorable. Another great touch is the complimentary round of White Russian cocktails after your meal. Victor’s truly has the best White Russian I have had anywhere in the world.

Las Palomas Doradas

Las Palomas Doradas Marina Vallarta

Las Palomas Doradas is the oldest restaurant in the marina, making it a staple for all visitors. Featuring French and Mexican fusion, this restaurant is a good change of pace from the traditional food you will be enjoying.

I recommend ordering the escargot and any of the baked fish dishes. In addition to tasty food, this restaurant has a greenery canopy, bistro-style tables and a fountain centerpiece making it a great location for a romantic date night.

Where to Eat in Downtown Puerto Vallarta

Joe jacks fish shack.

Joe Jacks FIsh Shack Puerto Vallarta

This British-owned joint is always packed. They serve British food and great seafood. Some menu items I recommend are the fish and chips, shrimp bucket and the fruit-flavored mojitos.

The ambiance of Joe Jacks is on par with the quality of the food and drinks. The rooftop patio is covered by greenery and colorful string lights. The location of the restaurant is on a bustling street which showcases the vibrancy of the city.

Cuates y Cuetes

Beachfront dining near malecon

When visiting a tropical destination, nothing beats dining with your toes in the sand. A great place to do this is Cuates y Cuetes with tables directly on the sand. In addition to the unbeatable location, the food is delicious.

If you are a seafood person, you cannot go wrong ordering any of the shrimp dishes. The shrimp are large, juicy and perfectly cooked. If you prefer something else, the fajitas are a fun and tasty classic.

For more restaurant tips, check out my Puerto Vallarta Food Guide .

General Tips for Visiting Puerto Vallarta

Shangri La Condos Puerto Vallarta

The official currency of Mexico is the peso. The conversion rate is approximately 20 pesos to 1 USD. Most vendors will accept dollars as payment but will give change in pesos. Be sure to have plenty of cash on hand as many restaurants and shops will only accept cash, not debit, or credit card.

The primary language of Mexico is Spanish but many people are bilingual and speak English as well. While you will be able to navigate your trip in English, the locals appreciate any attempt at speaking Spanish and are extremely helpful in teaching it.

After one week in Puerto Vallarta, you will have the basics down as long as you practice!

Some key Spanish phrases to know include:

Hello   …   Hola Thank you   …   Gracias Please   …   Por Favor Taxi/ Van  …   Taxi/ Camioneta Check  …   Cuenta How much?   …   Cuantos?

Water Safety

You have likely heard to not drink the water in Mexico (most Puerto Vallarta travel guides bring this fact up). This is true. While locals are used to the water and tolerate it well, it can cause stomach issues for tourists. Avoid tap water, ice, and produce washed in the tap water such as lettuce.

To enjoy these items request they are made from or washed in bottled water. Bottled water will likely be available in your hotel room or for purchase at restaurants. Luckily, bottles of water are affordable at markets and stores to stock up at cheaper-than-hotel prices.

Regions of Puerto Vallarta

View in Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is broken into many regions including downtown, Marina Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta.

Downtown PV: Beachfront resorts, the famous Malecon and many restaurants and clubs. Downtown is best for those looking for nightlife such as girls trips or bachelorette parties.

Marina Vallarta: 30 minutes from downtown and centered around an upscale yachting Marina with restaurants and high-end hotels. The Marina area is best for people looking for luxury within driving distance of downtown.

Nuevo Vallarta: Separate town located 45 minutes north of downtown. It is a resort-area that is good for families and people seeking the ultimate resort experience, but willing to sacrifice some local culture.

Note : The Puerto Vallarta area falls between the Nayarit and Jalisco states of Mexico. Since they have different time zones, be mindful of timing related to flights.

Outside of Puerto Vallarta is the luxury area of Punta Mita that hosts the most expensive and exclusive properties. This guide will not cover what to do in Punta Mita but I have some accommodation suggestions below.

If you are spending more than one week in Puerto Vallarta, divide your time between multiple locations for good variety.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta

Guide to Puerto Vallarta

Located in the central west coast of Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is an easy trip from anywhere in North America. To get to Puerto Vallarta, book a flight into the international airport PVR.

Conveniently, there are many direct flights from US cities on airlines such as Alaska, Delta and Southwest. For reference, a direct flight from Seattle to Puerto Vallarta is only 4 hours.

Once you arrive in Puerto Vallarta, follow the ground staff directions to the immigration line. This line is long as typically winds down a hallway. Make sure you join the line at the end to avoid getting redirected after waiting some time in the wrong area. Luckily, the line moves quickly, and the immigration process is standard. Be sure to keep your immigration ticket in a safe place as you will need it to leave the country.

Once through immigration, proceed to baggage claim then join the line for customs. Again, expect a long but quick line. Answer the custom agents’ questions then click a button to be selected for a random search. “Green” means you are good to leave, “red” indicates a random x-ray screening.

To exit the airport, you will pass hundreds of locals offering taxi service, tours and other services. While they are quite persuasive, continue straight to the exit. Upon exiting, you will find a taxi queue with the official Puerto Vallarta taxis.

Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

Mexico beach

The best option for transport from the airport is booking a private car service . This is a great option for large groups or anyone who wants a stress-free arrival in Mexico.

Getting around Puerto Vallarta is best navigated by hired taxis or rideshare services. I do not recommend renting a car for daily transport since the roads are confusing and drivers are aggressive.

The only case to rent a car is if you are planning a road trip or are staying far from the city. If you rent a car, avoid driving it in downtown.

As mentioned above, taxis are abundantly available and the easiest option for getting around Puerto Vallarta. They are also economical, costing approximately 15 USD for a large van for 30 minutes.

Before getting in the taxi or van, agree to a fair rate to avoid being up charged. If you enjoy your taxi driver, tip well and get their card for a reliable on-call driver for the duration of your trip.

31 Incredible Things to do in Puerto Vallarta [2023 Local’s Guide]

Looking for the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mexico? Look no further!

This article has been written by a local and contains a selection of the best renowned and off-the-beaten-path attractions that you can do in the area. The Mexican seaside town of Puerto Vallarta is just a short flight away from Mexico City and a quick drive from the city of Guadalajara, making it the perfect vacation spot to get the most out of your trip to Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta sits in the central state of Jalisco. It is something of a hidden gem among the popular seaside destinations in Mexico. In Vallarta, you’re more likely to avoid the almost certain crowds of Cancún or Tulum while still enjoying the many benefits of a tourist-friendly destination where it’s easy to get around.

Puerto Vallarta provides the ideal Mexican town experience combined with an array of adventure possibilities and a paradise feel. The Mexican Riviera is famous for its white sand beaches and year-round warm weather. No matter the time of year you’re planning on visiting, you’re guaranteed a good time and blue skies.

The city is divided into four major areas: Marina Vallarta, Downtown, The Romantic Zone, and The South Zone. Once a quaint and quiet fishing town, Vallarta has quickly grown and integrated certain areas to the north.

All of these spots offer a variety of things to see and do and it can be tricky to narrow it down. But don’t worry – that’s why we have crafted this expert insider guide to help you!

Best Things to do in Puerto Vallarta

travel guide puerto vallarta

A selection of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is detailed below. There is something for everyone here. Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach getaway, you want to venture out to secluded beaches and coves, or you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, you will find something here that you enjoy.

Visit the historic town center

The first must-see stop on your trip has to be downtown Vallarta. The town center of Puerto Vallarta is known for its lively cobblestone streets and its colorful atmosphere. In the downtown area, you’ll find a wide array of local businesses, artisans and craftsmen, souvenir shops, and local restaurants.

While you’re exploring downtown Vallarta, pop by the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Hidalgo 370, Proyecto escola, Centro). This is one of countless stunning Catholic churches in the city.

Here, you can admire the neoclassical-style structure and its baroque elements. Access to the church is free and you will not want to miss the beautiful interior and vibrant frescoes inside. If you are interested in attending a service, the Church leads services in English on Saturdays and mass in both English and Spanish on Sundays.

The city center is also home to quite a few jewelry stores that sell beautiful and unique sterling silver pieces at great prices, as well as authentic talavera and traditional pottery shops. From local street food markets to luxury five-star restaurants and fancy shops, Puerto Vallarta is known for its gastronomy, and you’ll find all of this and more downtown.

Take a walk along the Malecon

travel guide puerto vallarta

While you’re around the downtown area, head for a sunset walk along the famous Malecon de Puerto Vallarta. This 12-mile-long boardwalk is mostly closed off to vehicle traffic and is the perfect path for a sunset stroll.

Walking along the boardwalk is a must when visiting Vallarta. All of the things that you can anticipate finding along your path – and those you can’t – are guaranteed to make this a memorable experience.

While you make your way along the boardwalk and enjoy a beautiful ocean view, stop to have a bite at one of the many restaurants by the sea, grab some souvenirs and take lovely scenic shots or artsy pictures of the bronze sculptures that garnish the walkway. Many of these art pieces were created by renowned Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante.

The Malecon is a lively spot 24/7 and it is known for its amazing nightlife. The streets here really come to life after sunset. Many of the charming restaurants and quaint coffee bars transform into live music venues and host local and international musicians after dark. If you are looking to party until the sun comes up, check out the nightclubs ‘La Santa’ and ‘Strana’.

Watch the ritual ceremony of the Papantla Flying Men

If you’re lucky, you may be able to witness the ritual dance of the Papantla flying men while you walk along the Malecon. This dance is a cultural and artistic representation that dates back to pre-Colombian times.

The people of Papantla in old Mesoamerica used to carry out this ritual dance, showing gratitude to the Gods in appreciation of Earth, bounty, and fertility. Today, watching the Papantla flying men is a little glimpse into the rich cultural and historical memory of Mexico.

The ceremony starts with the dancers climbing a 98 ft tall pole. Four of the five dancers, tied to ropes, launch themselves from the top of the pole while the fifth dancer stays at the top and plays the flute and a drum.

This ritual dance is one of the oldest surviving traditions in Mexico. It is a crucial piece of cultural heritage, and it is not every day that one gets the chance to see it. You may be able to catch a glimpse of this dance in various parts of Mexico – from Chapultapec park in Mexico City to the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk.

Experience the Puerto Vallarta dining scene

Best things to do in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

There are a plethora of excellent restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. The eateries here serve up all types of cuisine from across Mexico and the globe. Whatever your preferences and budget, you will find something here that suits you.

If you want to sample authentic Jaliscan food, El Palomar De Los Gonzalez (Aguacate 425, Alta Vista, 48380) is a great place to have dinner. This beautiful restaurant is nestled on the top of the mountains right in the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s downtown.

The menu is made up of family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Everything is lovingly-prepared with locally-sourced ingredients.

Start with Tere’s Salad. Then, follow it up with some Minionetta shrimp, yelapa tostadas, or a mariscada if you are in the mood for sharing. The Flambéed bananas are the perfect dish to end up an amazing meal.

If you are into fine dining, reservations at Tintoque (Aquiles Serdán 445, Zona Romántica, Emiliano Zapata) are a must. This restaurant is the brainchild of Chef Joel Ornelas, born and bred in Puerto Vallarta.

After traveling the world, Ornelas opened up his restaurant so that he could serve traditional Jaliscan recipes with an international twist. The eatery offers fusion cuisine at its finest, and the setting is every bit as wonderful as the food.

Eat your way around town with a Puerto Vallarta food tour

If you consider yourself a foodie traveler, a Puerto Vallarta food tour is a great way to immerse yourself in the local gastronomy. Various local companies offer food tours that give you the opportunity to sample Jaliscan treats and street food favorites.

Enjoy sinking your teeth into carnitas tacos, tamales, atole, local seafood, birria, fresh churros, and much more. Many local food tours take you on a journey through offbeat residential neighborhoods such as Pitillal which are untouched by tourism.

Your tour guide will take you to street food markets and stalls that you would not find independently. Better still?

They will be able to help you communicate with the local vendors so that you can learn about their backgrounds and life stories. This is something that would otherwise be tricky to do unless you are fluent in Spanish.

Taking a Puerto Vallarta tour also means that you have a local expert on hand to offer recommendations. You can ask them for their suggestions on the best places to hang out, go for drinks, go shopping, etc.

Visit the Romantic Zone and Playa de los Muertos

travel guide puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone is part of the old town of Vallarta and is known as “La Zona Romántica”. This neighborhood sits just south of the town center and is known for its highly rated cafes, shops, and restaurants.

It is generally a pretty busy and lively area of the city. This neighborhood is found in the heart of Old Vallarta and is one of the most visited areas of the city. The Romantic Zone is also a great area to look for accommodation options.

The hotels and resorts found here are usually budget-friendly. Not to mention, opting to base yourself in a central location allows you the opportunity to experience the city to its fullest.

If you’re looking for a traditional place to have lunch or dinner by the beach, the seafood restaurant ‘La Palapa’ in Playa de Los Muertos serves some of the best lobster tacos and ceviche in town. Enjoy an amazing meal accompanied by traditional live music and breathtaking ocean views.

For a quintessentially Mexican drink , wash it all down with a michelada. Micheladas are beer cocktails that Mexicans go crazy for, even if they may seem like obscure concoctions to outsiders!

To make a michelada, beer is poured into a mixture of tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Maggi sauce, lime juice, and spices. It’s an acquired taste for sure but it is something that you must try while in Mexico.

Take a day trip out to Mascota

Mascota is a charming colonial-style Pueblo Magico that is situated halfway between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara . Pueblo Magicos are quaint towns and settlements that have been recognized by the Mexican tourism board for offering a particularly special culture, architecture, or gastronomy.

When you see that somewhere has been identified as being a Pueblo Magico, you can generally feel assured that it is a worthwhile place to visit. This definitely rings true of Mascota.

This little town is home to just 8,215 people. It is frequently overlooked by most visitors to Jalisco and sits beside El Circuito Rural.

This is a 35km route that connects Mascota with various small towns in the region. This includes Lake Juanacatlan, Yerbabuena, Cimarrón Chico de la Raicilla, Santa Rosa, and Navidad.

Consider basing yourself in Mascota for a day or two and using it as a jump-off point to explore these lesser-known spots. The town itself, with its picturesque central square and cobblestone streets, is deserved a day’s attention.

Spend a day in San Sebastián del Oeste

San Sebastián del Oeste is one of the most popular day trips that you can take from Puerto Vallarta. However, if your schedule permits, it is well worth spending a night here. This beautiful Pueblo Magico is nestled high in the Sierra Madre mountains. Its highest point is a mountain known as “La Bufa”.

One of the most exhilarating things to do here is to rent an ATV and drive to its peak, passing traditional villages as you go, to admire the view at the top. Once upon a time, Sen Sebastian was a prosperous silver mining town and it thrived during the colonial era.

Today, it is home to some of the friendliest people in Jalisco, and its winding cobbled streets and passageways, and traditional architecture are a photographer’s dream. Many old haciendas have been converted into luxury hotels and offer a truly unique place to stay.

Raicilla, a strong, distilled Mexican spirit, originates from the southwestern part of Jalisco close to San Sebastián del Oeste. Many distilleries are scattered around the region and it is possible to organize a tour and tasting. In particular, consider stopping by Tesoro del Oeste.

Fall in love with Talpe de Allende

Talpa de Allende is a Pueblo Magico in the Sierra Madre mountains, just two hours away from Puerto Vallarta. It is perhaps best known for being the final stopping point on “la Ruta del Peregrino”.

This is a 72-mile pilgrimage through the state of Jalisco. The pilgrimage takes place every year and thousands of people from across Mexico trek to the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

They come to pay their respects to a tiny Virgen del Rosario statue known as “La Chaparrita” which they believe can perform miracles. But religion aside, there is plenty to see and do in the area.

Look out for the Murales Magico – a colorful alleyway that is painted from top to bottom with vibrant murals. The paintings here display everything from aspects of Mexican traditions, to animated movie characters.

Since the town is situated at a relatively high altitude, the climate up here is much cooler than elsewhere in Jalisco. Go for an afternoon stroll through el Bosque de Maple (the maple forest).

This is a gorgeous wooded park filled with lakes and numerous walking trails. It provides you with a wonderful opportunity to get back to nature.

Venture off the beaten path at Real del Alto

If you have access to a vehicle, you can stop by the rural community in Real del Alto when you take a trip to San Sebastián del Oeste. This is a centuries-old settlement that today is only home to around 40 people.

The village is located at a very high altitude, atop a steep mountaintop. Access to the village requires driving up a treacherous mountain pass.

For this reason, over the decades, the villagers are starting to slowly relocate elsewhere and Real del Alto’s future looks uncertain. Many of the buildings here are falling into abandonment.

There is not an awful lot to see here. An hour or so is a sufficient amount of time to spend here.

However, Real del Alto provides a wonderful glimpse into rural life in Mexico, and in some ways, traveling here feels like venturing back in time. There are just a couple of stores and many residents live off the land.

The views across Jalisco state from up here are unparalleled. The little church at the village peak (Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario del Real Alto) is charming. There is an ancient rose bush (Rosa de Castilla) growing outside of the church that is from Spain.

Get lost in a downtown oasis at the Cuale River Island

The Cuale River Island is a paradise oasis hidden right in the heart of urban Vallarta. It is named after the river that flows from the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains into Banderas Bay.

The river essentially divides the city in two. You will find the downtown area to the north of the river and the Romantic Zone to the south.

There’s a lot to explore on the island. Pop by the Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale, a traditional indoor market that sells everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, to souvenirs and nick-nacks.

You’ll likely find talented artisans and lovely traditional crafts in every corner of the city and within the Mercado Municipal. However, you may prefer to look for these along the Malecon and around the Cuale River Island.

These are generally better quality, original and traditional artesanías made by talented craftsmen and local indigenous women. Venturing here, away from the swarms of tourists looking for cheaper trinkets, can help you secure a better price on your souvenir purchases.

Immersing yourself in the rich history and culture of the country is an essential part of visiting Mexico. While you’re at Rio Cuale Island, pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum.

Here, you will get the chance to see an amazing collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, pottery, and even tombs! This is a great place to learn a bit about Mexico’s history.

See the Rhythms of the Night show

Not sure how to spend an evening in Puerto Vallarta but not big on partying? One of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to see the Rhythms of the Night show

This is an immersive, cultural experience that was founded by the creators of Cirque du Soleil. The experience takes you to a steamy tropical rainforest at Las Caletas, close to the sun-bleached remnants of an old pyramid.

Your evening starts with a sunset cruise across Banderas Bay. Your boat takes you to the secluded cove of Las Caletas where tiki torches light your way through the jungle to your dining table.

As you meander through the jungle paths, you are greeted by dancers, acrobats, and fire jugglers. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Mexican meal overlooking the sea, as incredible performances take place from every angle around you.

Snorkel or scuba dive at Los Arcos de Mismaloya

If you’re up for an underwater adventure, head over to the Mismaloya beach and out to Los Arcos. This natural attraction is the perfect site for nature lovers visiting Vallarta.

Both swimmers and non-swimmers alike can enjoy the beach. This is one of the best spots in Jalisco where you can admire the unique blue-green color of the warm, tropical waters off the coast of Puerto Vallarta.

There are many tour options that you can look into, catering to whatever mood you’re in for your visit. Whether you’re an experienced diver, a keen snorkeler, or simply looking to spend a nice day by the sea, Los Arcos de Mismaloya offers wildlife spotting and the chance to experience a uniquely mysterious natural wonder!

Head north to Nuevo Vallarta and witness a baby sea turtle release

If you’re looking to explore more of the Mexican Riviera, head north from Puerto Vallarta to the newer part of town known as Nuevo Vallarta. This area is located north of the Ameca River and just across the border into the state of Nayarit.

The area of Nuevo Vallarta differs from South Zone in its organic nature. The North Zone is more of a purpose-built tourist destination that grew in response to the quickly developing town of Vallarta.

It is filled with luxury beach resorts and upscale international restaurants. The vibe here is very different from the local, authentic feel of the old town.

However, that is not to say that a visit to Nuevo Vallarta is not worth your time. This area is famous for its white sand beaches with calm, translucent waters that are safe to swim in year-round and perfect for families.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Nuevo Vallarta during hatching season (July to December ), you are in for a treat. You could have the chance to watch baby sea turtles being released and making their way into the ocean for the first time.

Conservation programs in Vallarta work extremely hard to protect and preserve sea turtles. There are local sanctuaries located all over Banderas Bay.

During the hatching season, sea turtles hatch and are released almost daily at the different sanctuaries across the bay. You could be part of the conservation efforts that ensure baby turtles make it safely into the ocean!

Take a day trip to Punta de Mita

Punta de Mita is the place to visit if you’re looking for a luxury beach escape away from the hordes in Puerto Vallarta. This area is located just under an hour away from Puerto Vallarta and is home to many luxurious, upscale hotels.

The Four Seasons, St. Regis Punta Mita, and other luxe hospitality brands have properties here. If your budget allows and you are looking to treat yourself, this area makes a wonderful place to stay for a week or two.

Punta de Mita provides a stark contrast to other highly sought-after beach tourism destinations in Mexico. It is still known for being a relatively tranquil place to vacation. This rings true even during the peak season ( January to March)!

This lovely little peninsula is surrounded by breath-taking aquamarine ocean waters on three sides and is home to a number of heavenly white sand beaches. Playa La Lancha is the ultimate surfing destination.

Accessing the beach requires following a mile-long dirt trail through the woodland. This helps this paradisical secluded beach avoid the eyes of most tourists. Unless you specifically knew where Playa La Lancha was, you would never stumble across it accidentally.

Meanwhile, Playa Anclote is the best option for a day of family fun and beautiful views. Whatever type of beach experience you’re after, you’ll find it at Punta de Mita.

Sample some of the best street tacos in town

If you are renting a car in Mexico and plan on driving to Punta de Mita, make a strategic pit stop at ‘Tacos On The Street’ for authentic Mexican tacos! This is a real local place that is as popular among Mexicans as it is among international tourists. Expect a short wait to be served but know that it is well worth it.

Indulge in exquisite artisanal chocolate

When visiting Mexico, you can’t miss out on the opportunity to try artisanal Mexican chocolate. One of the most interesting facts about Mexico that a lot of people do not realize? Chocolate was invented here!

You can find a variety of stores that sell artisanal chocolate. It can be a fun experience to head to the various stores independently and try a few different chocolate varieties.

Alternatively, you can take your experience further and go on a chocolate tour at a beautiful cacao garden. At ‘Planeta Cacao’, you can learn everything about the production process. Your guide will walk you through the stages that chocolate goes through: from the cacao pod to the store.

The space was created with the purpose of educating people on the history of cacao, from pre-Columbian times to the present. It gives a detailed look into the process of production and discusses the importance of chocolate within Mexican culture and gastronomy.

Puerto Vallarta chocolate tours

You can take part in one of their chocolate workshops or simply take a guided tour of the garden and take it all in. A number of Puerto Vallarta chocolate tours are detailed below for your consideration. Some even teach you how to make truffles!

  • Puerto Vallarta: Bean to bar chocolate workshop
  • Two-hour chocolate truffles workshop in Puerto Vallarta
  • Mole Poblano workshop in Puerto Vallarta

Go whale watching at Las Islas Marietas

The Islas Marietas is a beautiful natural sanctuary that is home to a plethora of endangered wildlife, flora, and fauna. Hawksbill sea turtles, Mexican spiny-tailed iguana, and Prairie Falcon are just a few of the endangered species that call the island home.

The area was designated as a protected biosphere reserve in 2008. It is one of 40 such places in Mexico, several of which are recognized by UNESCO.

Las Islas Marietas are located on the northern end of Bahía de Banderas. You can reach them in just over an hour from Puerto Vallarta’s main pier and in only fifteen minutes from Punta Mita.

The Marietas Islands are a paradise for nature lovers. Birdwatching, snorkeling, and whale watching are all popular activities on the islands.

Dolphin sightings are common around the islands year-round. It is not unusual to see them in large groups or in pairs, swimming alongside boats that are out on the water. However, during the winter months (approximately December through March), humpback whales arrive at the centuries-old breeding ground that is Banderas Bay.

They are certainly the guests of honor at the islands! This is one of the best places for whale-watching in Mexico.

The humpbacks stay for a short while in the waters of Mexico’s Pacific Coast before continuing their journey in their annual migration route. There are several tour options available to go whale watching.

Best whale-watching tours in Puerto Vallarta

travel guide puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta whale-watching tours offer you the opportunity to experience the once-in-a-lifetime chance to share a part of these gentle giants’ migration journey. Although a sighting cannot be guaranteed, it is very uncommon to go out on a whale-watching tour here and not see a whale or two.

Some tour companies will give you a refund or offer you the chance to participate free of charge in their next scheduled tour should you be unfortunate enough not to see a whale or two. Several reputable tours are detailed below for your consideration.

Book your place in advance! These tours are popular and do sell out.

  • Puerto Vallarta: responsible whale-watching experience
  • Whale-watching cruise in Puerto Vallarta
  • Puerto Vallarta: Whale-watching photo safari
  • Dolphin-watching cruise with a biologist
  • Puerto Vallarta: Dolphins in the wild tour

Final Thoughts

If you’re still weighing the pros and cons and debating on where your next trip to Mexico will take you, Puerto Vallarta is a perfect choice. At Vallarta, you can explore a bustling and lively town without missing out on the beach resort experience.

Many people are concerned about safety when traveling to Mexico for the first time. However, Puerto Vallarta is a very safe place.

Whether you’re after the nightlife, the food, the water sports, or the family fun, Vallarta is guaranteed to give you a memorable trip. The town is guaranteed to make you fall in love with the Mexican Riviera.

Have you been to Puerto Vallarta? What did you think?

Are there any other things to do in Puerto Vallarta that you have enjoyed and feel are missing from this list? Have a wonderful time in Mexico! Buen Viaje! xo

Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta

1. arriving: puerto vallarta airport tips.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta is easy as there’s an international airport ( Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz ) with daily flights to many cities in North America.

It’s not a big airport, so it doesn’t take long to get through once you arrive, especially if you’ve already cleared customs in another city in Mexico.

In fact, when I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, it only took me 15 minutes from the time the plane landed to collect my bags and get out of the airport.

The airport is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the city center, and there are several options for getting there.

Once you’ve got your luggage, you can either grab a taxi right outside the main airport doors (many people will ask you if you need one), take a public bus, or get an Uber.

And if you need to connect, there is free Wi-Fi in the airport.

Knowing important travel tips for Puerto Vallarta will help you plan the perfect trip to Mexico

Ubers are about half the price of a taxi, but they do not come to the airport terminal doors; you will have to walk five minutes.

When you exit the airport, turn left (walk to the end of the building), and turn left again. You will see a pedestrian bridge across the street. Walk across the bridge and catch an Uber from over there as this is the only place they pick you up. It should cost about $5-10 to get from the airport to most accommodations.

Alternatively, you can take a public bus. The station is right under the pedestrian bridge on the same side as the airport.

There are several busses that go into the various neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta , which will be marked on the front of the bus.

If you aren’t sure, you can always ask the bus driver by saying the name of the area you are going to. The bus costs 50 cents.

2. US Travel To Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for travelers from the United States due to its close proximity, warm weather, amazing atmosphere, and an international airport that makes it easy to get to and from.

As a US citizen, you will automatically be given a six-month visa on arrival, making it a great place to work remotely if you want to extend your stay. In fact, it’s a popular place for creators to stay when trying to start a travel blog and make money .

There are direct flights from dozens of popular cities in the U.S. including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.

American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest all fly there as well as several other international airlines.

3. Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta Safety

Safety is always a concern for visitors traveling to Mexico, but Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the safest destinations in the country.

Millions of tourists visit Puerto Vallarta every year with no problems. I’ve lived here for three months as a solo female traveler and have never felt scared or in danger.

This being said, I do have a few safety tips for Puerto Vallarta to share:

Like any city, petty theft does happen so you should be vigilant when walking with your belongings, especially at night.

Keep your phone or attractive electronics away when you’re wandering the cobblestone streets, and don’t leave them unattended at the beach. You might also invest in some pickpocket-proof garments to more easily avoid pickpockets .

Moreover, always protect yourself with travel insurance , as theft can happen anywhere.

As a solo female traveler, I try to avoid walking at night no matter where I am. Instead, I get Ubers — which are very affordable in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon , a beach boardwalk in the center of Puerto Vallarta, is safe to walk alone at night as it is always full of people and police.

During Covid-19, Puerto Vallarta received the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council, which recognizes the ongoing implementation of strict safety measures in destinations around the world.

4. Travel Insurance For Puerto Vallarta

Here is one of the most important tips for travelers to Mexico :

When visiting Puerto Vallarta — or anywhere else in the world — it’s important to get travel insurance. If we’ve learned anything in the last year, it’s that the unexpected can and does happen.

While there are many providers out there, one of the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country.

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

Click here to price out travel insurance for your trip in just a few clicks .

5. Puerto Vallarta Weather

One of the top travel tips for Puerto Vallarta is to see the sunset

Puerto Vallarta has warm weather year-round, making it a perfect beach destination for those looking to escape the cold winters in the northern hemisphere.

Temperatures never get colder than 72°F, so you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful beaches and ocean no matter what time of year you visit!

June is the hottest month of the year and the start of the rainy season which goes until October.

The rain typically only happens for a few hours in the afternoon or in the evening so you’ll still get lots of beach time even if you visit during the summer.

6. When To Visit Puerto Vallarta

Exploring the beaches of Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your tolerance for heat and crowds. October to April is the high season which coincides with the most pleasant (driest) weather and whale-watching season.

Since this is right after the rainy season, it’s also ideal for hiking as there will be lush green scenery and full waterfalls. In fact, the destination offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the world , with this being the best time to take in local scenery at its most stunning.

The downside of visiting during the high season is that this is when you’ll find the biggest crowds and the highest prices on accommodation.

The weather starts to become what many would consider unpleasantly hot in June, so avoid traveling to Puerto Vallarta then then if you don’t like the heat.

Additionally, the summer coincides with the rainy season but can be a great time to get deals on accommodation and tours.

You could also time your trip to Puerto Vallarta to attend one of the city’s many events like Pride month in May or Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November.

7. What To Know About Puerto Vallarta Travel

Exploring El Centro while traveling to Puerto Vallarta

Now, there are a few things to know about Puerto Vallarta before traveling.

When planning a trip to Mexico , you’ll be happy to know that the country has some of the most relaxed entry protocols anywhere in the world during COVID-19 — so if you’re wondering “Can I travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico” the answer is very likely “yes!”.

You do not need a test to enter the country, although I always recommend it.

Infection rates are declining on the whole in Mexico, and in Puerto Vallarta, there are few restrictions.

At the time of writing, everything is open, there is no curfew, and for the most part, life feels normal here. You must wear a mask inside establishments, and some places take your temperature before entering.

Moreover, Puerto Vallarta is extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Zona Romantica is the gay neighborhood, and it’s filled with rainbow flags and gay clubs. There are lots of events for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially during Pride at the end of May.

You do not need to know Spanish to travel around Puerto Vallarta, but it’s always helpful to know a few key phrases like hello ( hola ), thank you ( gracias ), and how are you ( cómo estás? ).

This being said, don’t be nervous if you can’t speak Spanish; most locals speak English and are used to travelers who do not know Spanish.

8. Puerto Vallarta Hotels

There’s no shortage of amazing hotels to stay at in Puerto Vallarta. Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive family resort or an LGBTQ+ friendly hotel, you’ll be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta.

The biggest resorts and hotels tend to be concentrated in the north and south neighborhoods of the city where you’ll find nicer beaches.

If you want to stay in a resort, some good areas are Conchas Chinas , the North Hotel Zone , and Marina Vallarta . These places are known for having some really great all-inclusive Mexico resorts as well as delicious vegan-friendly Mexico resorts .

Conchas Chinas is one of the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta

If you prefer to stay in the heart of the city then book your accommodation in 5 de Diciembre , El Centro , or Zona Romantica .

From these neighborhoods, you’ll be able to walk to The Malecon where you can find restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. You won’t find as many all-inclusive resorts here but there are plenty of boutique hotels and cute Airbnbs to choose from.

In reality, it doesn’t really matter which part of the city you stay in, as getting around is easy.

And to help you easily find great places to stay, here are a few resources:

9. Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is not a huge city which makes it easy to get around.

In terms of the best way to travel in Puerto Vallarta , if you stay in Centro or Zona Romantica, you’ll be able to walk to bars, restaurants, and the beach easily.

Visiting Los Muertos Pier is one of the top things to do in Puerto Vallarta

Even if you stay in one of the neighborhoods a little further out like Conchas Chinas, you can still get around Puerto Vallarta cheaply by using the bus or ride-sharing apps.

There are buses that run all over the city and only cost 50 cents to get on.

Alternatively, you can take an Uber or inDriver (a local car ride app). A 20-minute Uber across town costs around $2.50-$5 depending on demand.

There are also taxis readily available on populated streets, but these are typically more expensive. Always remember to negotiate the price beforehand if you get a taxi!

Of course, you can also rent a car. While it’s not really necessary to have a car if you’re staying in and exploring Puerto Vallarta thanks to the many budget-friendly public transportation options, some travelers like to rent one if they’re doing a lot of day trips to traveling to other places in Mexico.

One recommendation:

Use Discover Cars to quickly compare your car rental options.

10. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants

No list of Puerto Vallarta travel tips would be complete without talking about the food.

Mexico is world-famous for its cuisine, and Puerto Vallarta is no exception to this.

Given that the city is right by the ocean, you can enjoy excellent quality seafood here with Mexican flavor. Some of the top restaurants are:

  • Mezcal y Sal
  • Barcelona Tapas
  • The Blue Shrimp

Mezcal y Sal offers some of the best cheap eats in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The street food is also amazing here, so don’t be afraid to try it. There are taco stands on almost every corner where you can enjoy a filling meal for just a couple of dollars.

In terms of Puerto Vallarta money tips , this is a great way to save if you’re traveling on a budget.

Puerto Vallarta also has plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Check out Vegan Ramen , the Green Place , and Salud Super Food for healthy veggie-friendly options.

11. Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta

Although Puerto Vallarta is a city, one of the best things about it is the quick access to the ocean and mountains, making it a perfect place to go on outdoor adventures .

Some of the most popular things to do here include whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, or simply relaxing by the beach and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.

For the best diving, head to Los Arcos National Marine Park .

Los Arcos Marine Park Mexico is one of the top attractions in Puerto Vallarta

There are also a lot of hiking trails to explore around the city. One of my favorites is Los Arcos which leaves from Boca de Tomatlán to Las Animas Beach .

It takes two hours, passing by secluded beaches along the way you can stop and enjoy.

From Las Animas, you can grab a water taxi back to the city.

No Puerto Vallarta visitor's guide would be complete without mentioning Colomitos Beach

Another popular walk within the city is to the Mirador La Cruz del Cerro , an observation deck with some of the best views of the city.

Within the city, there are many fun things to do too.

Walking along The Malecon is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening just people watching and exploring the many restaurants and shops of Puerto Vallarta.

You can join a paid food or drink tour, and there are also free city walking tours and art walks that happen every Wednesday.

Additionally, Puerto Vallarta has lively nightlife with clubs that go into the early hours of the morning. Salsa dancing is very popular here!

13. Day Trips From Puerto Vallarta

San Pancho in Mexico should be listed in every travel guide to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is an excellent base to explore surrounding places as fun day trips .

Sayulita and San Pancho are two up-and-coming beach towns in Mexico popular for surfing. Sayulita is notorious for its nightlife, and San Pancho is more relaxed.

From Boca de Tomatlán — which is a half an hour drive from Puerto Vallarta — you can get a taxi boat to many secluded beaches and small towns along the coast.

Yelapa is one of the most popular places to visit. This laid-back beach town is only accessible by boat or hiking trail, and there you can find many waterfalls to explore.

There’s also the charming mountain town of San Sebastian , an hour and a half drive away. It’s a great place to go hiking and cool off from the heat.

San Sebastian is one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta

14. Solo Travel In Puerto Vallarta

Going on a vacation to Puerto Vallarta on your own? You’ll be happy to know that the city is one of the top solo female travel destinations for many.

It’s easy to make friends in Puerto Vallarta as a solo traveler. I found an amazing group of friends within two days of moving here that I’ve loved getting to know.

Staying at hostels is always a good way to meet people, but if you prefer to stay at an Airbnb or hotel, it’s still easy to meet other travelers.

Facebook groups are one of the most popular ways to connect with other travelers in Puerto Vallarta. Here are some of the best ones:

  • Puerto Vallarta: Everything You Need Or Want to Know  (big, general group for asking questions about anything)
  • Puerto Vallarta Digital Nomads  (coworking meet-ups and events)

Tourists Visiting Los Cabos Warned To Be Cautious On Popular Beaches

Travelers heading to Mexico typically choose between Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and luxurious Los Cabos for the ultimate beach vacation.

All are incredible but are not without their flaws.

Whether it's unsightly crowds, hurricane season, or various beach hazards, expectations should always be tempered.

Right now, as travelers begin flocking for summer vacations, the city has recommended all beachgoers to remain cautious at popular beaches in Los Cabos.

This might come as a surprise since so many Cabo beaches have earned the prestigious blue flag, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans .

That's the case as of June 14, 2024, as jellyfish have made their home in Cabo's pristine waters.

Waiving The White Flag

Travelers shouldn't necessarily give up on vacation in Los Cabos right by waiving the white flag, but that's exactly what many beachgoers will find along Cabo's shores.

Of course, like many popular beach destinations, a color-tiered flag system has been put in place to let visitors know certain risks of that particular beach.

In this case, it's one of man's most common nuisances – jellyfish.

This aquatic alien has been causing figurative headaches and literal rashes on many tourists across the globe, and now it's Cabo's turn.

White flags are posted at Medano Beach, El Corsario Beach, and Palmilla Beach , which signifies the notable presence of these spineless sea creatures.

To pile on to tourists' annoyances, yellow flags have been posted at Santa Maria Acapulquito Beach, La Ribera Beach, Hacienda Beach, El Surgidero Beach, and Acapulquito Beach, warning of strong currents.

Invasion of Medano Beach

It's not just one single sighting that gives lifeguards the green light to post a white flag. No, it's a plethora of sightings putting swimmers health at risk.

While this breed of jellyfish is no more than an annoying rash, that doesn't mean it's pleasant. Especially after splurging on one of the most expensive destinations in Mexico.

If you have Cabo in your sights, then you are probably aware of Medano Beach.

And if that's the case, then you are simultaneously aware of how un-swimmable many of Cabo's beaches are. Medano is one of the most popular for swimming due to its beauty, safety relative to other beaches, and location.

Well, that is until lifeguards decided to post a white flag at one of the most sought-after beaches in all of Mexico.

Lined with stunning all-inclusive resorts and breathtaking waters, this gorgeous beach is typically numero uno on travelers' wishlists.

Unfortunately, it may have to stay there as there is no timetable for pesky jellyfish to make their way elsewhere.

On the bright side, jellyfish are strictly marine animals, so you're perfectly safe indoors at your cushy resort with all the top amenities.

The problem is that the views are spectacular, so you may have trouble resisting the temptation to bypass the white flag warnings.

Ways To Avoid Stings

Los Cabos is stunning; there's no way around it. However, visiting the most swimmable beach in Cabo doesn't mean you have to dive right in.

There are plenty of ways to experience this iconic vacation hotspot, but perhaps no more than hiring a tour guide to take you by boat to the famous ‘El Arco' (the Arch).

Boating across Cabo's beautiful waters ensures you stay safe from one of the ocean's most bothersome animals.

Despite white flags, nobody is stopping you from hopping aboard a boat, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply lounging in the sun.

Jellyfish can pop up anywhere in the water, no matter how shallow. It's best to take the flag warnings seriously to avoid risks of contact.

What To Do If Stung

You know where this is going…

We've all heard the old wise tales of what to do if stung by a jellyfish. You know, find somewhere private and see how good your friendship really is by asking them to urinate on the wound.

In a day and age where science has never been questioned more, this old wise tale may create more problems than solving them.

According to Health.com , rubbing cool vinegar or placing hot water on the affected area is the way to go.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are also said to help, which is easy to keep on hand.
