About The Book of Mormon on Broadway

Video & photos.

The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic go-getter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Elders Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected.

Know Before You Go

Composed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon is an old-style musical with a modern sensibility. This blockbuster show features several big song-and-dance numbers accompanied by some old-fashioned Broadway belting. An equal opportunity offender, the show playfully pokes fun at religion, sexuality, poverty and race, while inspiring an after-the-show discussion of religion in general.

The latest national of "The Book of Mormon" plays the Waterbury Palace April 26-28. (Julieta Cervantes)

The unabashed and uncompromising satire of Broadway musicals, coming to the Waterbury Palace Theater April 26-28, has become one of the genre’s major mainstream successes.

The show was written by “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker with Robert Lopez of “Avenue Q” and “Frozen” fame. Still running in New York, “The Book of Mormon” is currently the 12th longest-running Broadway show of all time and one of the most profitable.

These days, a “Book of Mormon”  tour is greeted by audience members who come in costume, hold up signs and know every line by heart. That throng of devout fans has to co-exist with theatergoers who may be seeing this outrageous show for the first time. “The Book of Mormon” continues to do impressive business at theaters that have already booked it previously.

Neither Thomas Ed Purvis, who plays Mutumbo and is also the tour’s co-dance captain, nor Lamont J. Whitaker, who plays Mafala Hatimbi (the father of the show’s heroine Nabalungi) are old enough to have experienced that wave of amazement that met “The Book of Mormon” when this bad-taste-based musical spectacle exploded upon Broadway in 2011.

“I knew of the show, but it wasn’t one of the ones they taught at school,” said Purvis who attended the Boston Conservatory, a breeding ground for musical theater performers. “I first saw it when it reopened on Broadway after COVID.”

“I didn’t see it until we started rehearsals for this tour in 2022,” said Whitaker. “When I was in college, people would sing ‘I Believe,’ so I always knew what kind of show it was.”

That song, in which the show’s hero, a Mormon missionary named Elder Price, reaffirms his faith in his religion, includes lyrics like “I believe! That God lives on a planet called Kolob! I believe! That Jesus has his own planet as well. And I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri. If you believe, the Lord will reveal it. And you’ll know it’s all true — You’ll just feel it. You’ll be a Mormon!!! And by gosh — Mormon just belieeeeeeeeves!!!!”

Elder Price (played on this tour by Sam McLellan) and his pesky fellow missionary Elder Cunningham (Sam Nackman) attempt to interest Ugandan natives in the Mormon faith and become involved in village disputes with a local warlord.

Norwalk native Thomas Ed Purvis is the co-dance captain and also plays Mutumbo in the national tour of

Purvis is a Norwalk resident who previously sang and danced on tour in Connecticut in the long-running tour of “Rent”. “The Book of Mormon” has visited the same big theaters that “Rent” did, namely The Bushnell, the Shubert and the Waterbury Palace, some of them more than once.

”I dreamed of going to some of these theaters around the country,” Purvis said. He looks forward to playing the Waterbury Palace, partly because family members from Connecticut will be coming to see it. His grandmother has seen the musical 10 times.

Whitaker’s grandmother has been an influence as well. “She was a chief in Ghana. She got crowned. I pay homage to her in the way I carry my character.”

Whitaker’s mother, stepfather and brothers have all seen him play Mafala Hatimbi. He sees some cultural relevance in the show. “There’s been a lot going on in Uganda recently. We’re putting certain things out there.”

When he began with the tour, Purvis was a “swing” (the company member who understudies multiple small roles in the show) and assistant dance captain. His current job as co-dance captain requires him to “set up the show and maintain it on the road.”

Whitaker has performed the role of Mafala Hatimbi around 500 times at this point. He said the character is “very special. He’s a single father who wants his daughter to have the life he’s never had. He really changes by the end of the story.”

That is a sweet, sentimental way of describing a show that is also a riotous, foul-mouthed and violent tale of culture clashes and religious dogma.

“You do try to find the humanity,” Whitaker said.

As for the raucous comedy, “Someone is still feeling that impact for the first time,” Purvis said. “We have to keep it fresh.”

Whitaker notes that the show has been around so long, and this particular tour has lasted so long, that it’s bringing “The Book of Mormon” to areas that haven’t experienced it before.

“We’re reaching cities that have never seen it, that would never get this type of musical. We’re pushing the barriers,” he said.

“The Book of Mormon” runs April 26-28 at the Palace Theater, 100 East Main St., Waterbury. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. $44-$148. palacetheaterct.org/shows-and-events/main-stage/book-mormon .

The national Broadway tour of “The Book of Mormon” opens Friday and runs through Sunday at Chrysler Hall. The show — written by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matthew Stone, along with Robert Lopez, the co-writer of the stage hit “Avenue Q” — debuted on Broadway in 2011 to rave reviews.

“It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals,” wrote Peter Marks, theater critic for The Washington Post.

It won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, and took home the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

The plot centers around two Mormons who are training for missions in Uganda to convert the residents of a village. Upon arrival, they learn that the village is wracked by AIDS and ruled over by the show’s antagonist “The General.”

“It’s not just one type of people, or one group of people, getting talked about or made fun of …” said Dewight Braxton Jr., who plays the General, “… it’s everyone!”

Having toured with the show for two years, Braxton estimates that the song “Man Up” probably gets the most laughs:

“I’m taking the reins, / I’m crossing the bear! / Just like Jesus, / I’m growing a pair!”

WHAT IS THE BOOK OF MORMON ABOUT?

The musical tells the story of two Salt Lake City Mormons sent as missionaries to Uganda, hoping for a few baptisms and a couple of conversions. Instead, they are welcomed by some very harsh realities and a particularly unpleasant warlord.

The lyrics are guaranteed to have you weeping with laughter.

Written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone , the comedy giants behind South Park and Robert Lopez (Avenue Q and Disney’s Frozen), The Book Of Mormon is a hilarious musical that breathes three-dimensional, all-singing, all-dancing life into the absurdities of Mormon dogma, whilst simultaneously being incredibly rude, potentially offensive and above all, unexpectedly endearing.

Since making its world premiere in March 2011 at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, where it won nine Tony® Awards, including Best Musical,  The Book of Mormon  has been performed on three continents and won over thirty international awards. The musical has smashed long-standing box office records in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney and cities across the U.S.

The London production opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre in February 2013 when it set the record for the highest single day of sales in West End history and went on to win four Olivier Awards® including Best New Musical.

Kravis on Broadway for 2024-25 has 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' 'Funny Girl,' 'Book of Mormon'

Call it a Sweet 16: The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach has released the lineup for its 16th season of Kravis on Broadway performances, and it's packed with Tony Award winners, including six West Palm Beach premieres.

The season kicks off with "Mrs. Doubtfire" from Oct. 29-Nov. 3, and continues with "The Cher Show" from Jan. 7-12, the Kravis Center announced in a news release. That will be followed by "Funny Girl" from Jan. 28-Feb. 2, "Peter Pan" from Feb. 12-16 and "The Book of Mormon" from March 11-16.

The season is rounded out by "Moulin Rouge! The Musical" from March 25-30, "Les Misérables" from April 22-27, and "Mystic Pizza" from May 13-18.

"The 2024-2025 season features eight hit musicals, including several Tony and Grammy Award-winners, hilarious comedies, whimsical adventures, touching true-life stories and spectacular theatrical celebrations of truth, beauty, freedom and love," Kravis Center chief executive Diane Quinn said in a news release.

Current subscribers will have first access to season passes beginning at noon May 6 at kravis.org . New subscribers will be able to buy season tickets starting May 13, the Kravis Center said.

Subscriptions include an eight-show series that has "The Book of Mormon," or a seven-show series that does not include "The Book of Mormon."

The eight-show series package prices range from $387 to $1,012, and the seven-show series package ranges from $341 to $884.

Here is a look at each of the performances included in the coming season's Kravis on Broadway series:

"Mrs. Doubtfire," Oct. 29-Nov. 3: The internationally acclaimed musical based on the hit movie that starred Robin Williams. The stage adaptation again tells the story of an out-of-work actor who goes to great lengths to get closer to his children.

"The Cher Show," Jan. 7-12: The story of pop superstar Cher, packed with 35 of her greatest hits across her more than six-decade career.

"Funny Girl," Jan. 28-Feb. 2: A Broadway revival of the beloved 1964 Bob Merrill-Jule Styne musical that tells the story of Fanny Brice, who dreams of life as a star of the stage.

"Peter Pan," Feb. 12-16: A new adaptation of the 70-year-old Carolyn Leigh-Moose Charlap musical, bringing to life the story of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Darling children as they embark on a magical journey.

"The Book of Mormon," March 11-16: The 2011 Trey Parker-Robert Lopez musical comedy that follows a pair of mismatched missionaries; it was the winner of nine Tony Awards and countless accolades, including The New York Times' proclamation that "The Book of Mormon" is "the best musical of this century."

"Moulin Rouge! The Musical," March 25-30: The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's hit 2001 film, with Bohemians, aristocrats and, above all, love, with songs, sets and costumes that earned the production 10 Tony Awards.

"Les Misérables," April 22-27: A tale of broken dreams and unrequited love set four decades after the French Revolution, with classic songs including "I Dreamed a Dream," "One Day More" and "Master of the House."

"Mystic Pizza," May 13-18: Three women navigate life and love in a small-town pizza shop, with a soundtrack that features highlights of the 1980s and ’90s, including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

In a press release announcing the news on Friday, the Safety Institute claimed that Inspect marks "the first time that an AI safety testing platform which has been spearheaded by a state-backed body has been released for wider use."
