Virgin Atlantic warmly welcomes colleagues from other airlines who we hold a staff travel agreement with, travelling on our flights.  

Everything you need to know before you make a flight listing and head to the airport can be found here .

Flight listing is required for all standby travel on Virgin Atlantic.  

- If you purchased your ticket through myIDTravel and your ticket number begins 932 (Virgin Atlantic ticket stock) a listing is made automatically at the time the ticket is issued.  No further action is necessary.

- If your ticket number does not  begin with 932 (i.e. it begins with your own airline ticket stock number), you must create a listing through Virgin Atlantic:

Email : [email protected] The subject should be XX listing request for DD/MMM/YY (where XX = your airline code/name) Please include: - All passenger names as per the ticket - Date of birth of all passengers - Route/flight number/date - Passenger contact telephone number

Telephone : +44 (0) 344 742 4390 (opening hours Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays UK time 10:00-14:00, Wednesdays 10:00-12:00, closed weekends and UK bank holidays)

Ticket numbers (consisting of 13 digits) will be required at the time of listing for all passengers

A flight coupon must be issued for each sector e.g. if for Heathrow (LHR) - Grenada (GND) this flight routes via Barbados (BGI), this must be issued as LHR - BGI - GND

Where possible use online check in and only use the Economy Bag Drop. Do not go to the Premium or Upper Class Check In.  Seats will either be allocated at check in or you will be given a 'seat at gate' boarding pass. 

All codeshare flights are excluded.

Please also refer to embargoes below.

Embargoes can be placed at any time, you're responsible for checking embargoes before travel.  Issuance of a ticket and/or creation of a listing does not guarantee that an embargo does not exist.

If you purchased your ticket through myIDTravel and your ticket number begings with 932 (Virgin Atlantic ticket stock), flights to/from St Vincent, Grenada, Antigua (Antigua only when operating via Barbados) and Montego Bay (Montego Bay only when operating via Nassau) are embargoed until further notice.

Caribbean inter-island flights are embargoed until further notice.

If you purchased your ticket through myIDTravel and your ticket number begins with 932 (Virgin Atlantic ticket stock) the system charges UK Airport Departure Tax.  Complete this online form  after travel to request a refund of this tax.

Virgin Atlantic Economy classic baggage allowance applies.  

When travelling on Virgin Atlantic, staff and their family and companions must always maintain a smart, clean and tidy appearance

·         All clothing and footwear must be clean and must not be torn or ripped  

·         Beach or swimwear is not allowed on staff travel, we have relaxed the policy to allow you to wear long shorts and t-shirts so the swimwear can be packed in your case. So please ensure you are not wearing the following for your flight: Swimsuits, Bikinis, Speedos, swimming shorts/trunks, sarongs or kaftans

·         Whilst we don’t expect you to be fully covered up, especially at some of our lovely sunny destinations, in order to be respectful of all local cultures and to maintain a certain appearance, please do not wear revealing or provocative clothing

·         This means no low cut tops, bare midriff, see through clothing, very short shorts/skirts or dresses (anything above mid thigh) or clearly visible underwear

·         Whilst slogans of branded clothing will be permitted, please do not wear offensive slogans on your clothes. Some terminology or images can be deemed offensive, if in doubt don’t wear it

·         The Company "reserves the right" to refuse boarding to anyone travelling whom it deems has not adhered to the Staff Travel Dress code Policy

·         The decision made by the Airport Staff will be final

Lounge/Clubhouse access is not permitted on leisure travel.

Flying Club tier benefits are not recognised on staff travel.

If you are lucky enough to be sat up front:

  • If you are offered a sleep suit in Upper Class please turn it down
  • You can have a drink at The Bar/Loft or Booth however please don't prolong your stay there
  • If your fellow travellers are in a different cabin, they won't be able to join you

Shai Weiss - Chief Executive Officer

Shai Weiss

Shai Weiss is Chief Executive Officer at Virgin Atlantic and an Executive Director of the Virgin Atlantic board.

Shai and the team are keenly focused on Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays together  becoming the most loved travel company.

Shai joined Virgin Atlantic as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in July 2014 from Virgin Management Ltd, where he had been an Investment Partner since 2012 and was a Founding Partner of Virgin Green Fund.  In January 2017 Shai assumed the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer responsible for shaping the airline’s strategic position in the market, driving opportunities for new revenue, and leading the loyalty, alliances and marketing programs that distinguish the airline.  Through his role at Virgin Group Shai has been a member of the Virgin Atlantic board from summer 2012.

Shai has extensive financial and operational expertise. Prior to joining Virgin Group, he held several senior management positions at ntl:Telewest (now Virgin Media), the UK and Europe’s largest cable operator. Shai was part of the turn-around of ntl with roles including Managing Director of Consumer Products, Director of Operations, and Director of Financial Planning for the Consumer division. Shai was also behind the merger between Virgin Mobile UK and ntl:Telewest and the re-brand to Virgin Media.

Prior to ntl, Shai established the European office of early-stage technology venture fund JVP and was a senior associate with Morgan Stanley.

Shai also serves as a non-executive director of Checkpoint Software Technologies (NASDQ: CHKP), a leading provider of cyber security solutions to governments and corporate enterprises globally.

Shai holds an MBA from Columbia University in New York and a BBA from City University of New York, Baruch College. He resides in London with his family, attends Arsenal games whenever he can, reads The New Yorker magazine from cover to cover and attempts to play basketball.

Siobhan Fitzpatrick - Chief Experience Officer

Siobhan joined Virgin Atlantic as VP, Digital & Distribution in 2018 after 15 years in senior roles in the retail industry at brands including Argos and Homebase. Earlier, she gained deep digital experience through roles in media and publishing. Siobhan’s background includes digital commerce and transformation, customer experience and marketing.  She is passionate about creating seamless experiences for customers, delivered through amazing people and great technology.

Siobhan lives with her partner, son, three cats, one dog and one horse. When she’s not on the horse riding, she’s normally avidly reading.

Corneel Koster - Chief Customer & Operating Officer

Cornell Koster

Corneel Koster is Chief Customer & Operating Officer at Virgin Atlantic, responsible for the delivery of the unique customer experience of Virgin Atlantic, as well as its safe and reliable operations. Corneel leads all customer facing teams, including Airports, Cabin Crew, Customer Centres, Clubhouses and Inflight Services to the operational teams, including Engineering & Maintenance, Flight Operations, Operations Control, Crew Logistics and the Safety & Security function. Corneel expanded his responsibilities from his previous role as Chief Customer Officer at Virgin Atlantic. Corneel brings to the team over 23 years’ experience in aviation, including leadership roles with some of our closest partners.

Before he returned to Virgin Atlantic in 2019, he was Delta Air Lines’ Senior Vice President - Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, overseeing sales and partnerships in the EMEAI region while coordinating the operational aspects and the service delivery to Delta’s customers, working closely with Delta’s joint venture partners Air France-KLM, Alitalia and Virgin Atlantic.

Before joining Delta, as Chief Operating Officer for Grupo Aeromexico Corneel was responsible for the operational excellence and service delivery of the Mexican airline and its regional feeder airline, as well as the company’s cargo and ground-handling subsidiaries. Corneel has also held several commercial leadership roles in the passenger, ground handling and cargo businesses of Air France-KLM, and before that KLM.

Corneel serves as a Board Member for Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited and as a Board member of BritishAmerican Business.

Originally from the Netherlands, Corneel holds an MSc (drs.) in Business Administration from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Corneel has UK settled status and lives on the south coast of the UK with his wife and three sons.

Oliver Byers - Chief Financial Officer

Oliver Buyers

Oliver Byers was appointed Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Financial Officer in September 2020. He is responsible for financial planning & operations, legal and fleet planning and is focused on achieving profitable growth combined with a healthy return on capital deployed. Oliver brings to the team over 10 years of commercial aviation experience from both Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Group

Since joining Virgin Atlantic Oliver has held several leadership roles including Senior Vice President Revenue Management; Senior Vice President Global Sales & Loyalty; Senior Vice President Data & Customer Loyalty; and Chief of Staff. Oliver currently serves as a Board member of Virgin Group Loyalty Company and as an alternate Board Member for Virgin Atlantic Limited

Oliver joined Virgin Atlantic in early 2013 from the Virgin Group, in the role of Chief of Staff to the CEO. In this role, he supported the overall implementation and delivery of the Group’s strategic agenda and advised Virgin-branded businesses, including the successful growth then IPO of Virgin America, formation of Virgin Atlantic’s industry-leading Joint Venture with Delta Air Lines and the strategic development of Virgin Galactic. Oliver began his career as an investment banker at UBS, working in UK mergers and acquisitions and raising equity from capital markets. 

Oliver holds an MEng (hons) in Aeronautical Engineering from Durham University. He now lives in London having previously lived in San Francisco and Geneva and loves cycling and ski touring during the winter.

Juha Järvinen– Chief Commercial Officer

Juha Jarvinen

Juha Järvinen is Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic with over 25 years’ aviation, travel and logistics industry experience.  He leads the Commercial unit with responsibility for Passenger, Cargo, Holidays tour operator and Ancillary Revenues, Network planning, Joint Venture with Delta Air Lines and Air France KLM, SkyTeam Alliance and other airline partnerships, Global Corporate and Travel Trade Sales, Revenue Management and Distribution, and in its core to become  the most loved travel company .

Juha joined Virgin Atlantic as Chief Commercial Officer in January 2019 from Finnair Plc, where he had been Chief Commercial Officer and Executive Board Member since 2014 and Managing Director of Finnair Cargo from 2012 to 2016. Prior to Finnair, Juha held a number of senior commercial and operations positions at SAS Scandinavian Airlines during his 14 years at the airline.

Juha is non-exec board member at British American Business, chamber of commerce trade organisation driving trade and investment between the UK and US. Previously, Juha acted as non-exec board member, Chairman and President Emeritus of the Airline Passenger Experience Association [APEX] Board, a US based non-profit association representing the global airline, technology and entertainment industry during 2016-2021. The association thrives to elevate improvements in customer experience, digitalisation and created APEX Official Airline Ratings and Awards during his tenure.

Juha holds an MBA from Danube University in Austria and a BA Honours from London Metropolitan University. He resides in London with his spouse. Experiences curious Finn loves travelling and exploring the world. Enjoys gym training and completely switches off at a hot yoga class and running by River Thames.

Every member of the Virgin Atlantic team is entitled to discounted staff travel – but they can only take it when there's a spare seat on an aircraft. Unsurprisingly, that means Virgin's staff are extremely interested in finding out how many seats are available on upcoming flights. In Virgin-speak, that's called checking the "load".

But load checking was tricky, especially for frontline workers with limited access to computers. The answer? A custom Workplace integration called Load Checker, which uses a Workplace Chatbot to automate the heavy lifting while bringing the entire process to mobile for the first time.

This post provides details of becoming Virgin Atlantic Cabin Crew.

Application Process

Virgin Atlantic advertises all of their current openings on their website . Once you find an opening that you are interested in, an online application is filled out along with the submission of your resume to the airline. Now, this may seem very simple but don’t get too comfortable! Included in the application are questions aimed to learn more about your personality and some motivational questions to decide if you meet the criteria that Virgin Atlantic is looking for.

Now, if you move on to the next step in the process, you will be asked to submit a video interview where you will be asked to answer questions that center around Virgin Atlantic’s brand. If they feel you have what it takes to become a member of their team, you will be asked to attend an assessment day.

These assessment days consist of group activities to demonstrate your teamwork skills and problem solving skills as well as sitting on a crew seat and reaching the overhead bin. Being a certain height is actually very important when becoming a cabin crew member! There will also be a short test on your assessment day followed by an interview. After this full day, everyone will be sent home and the successful candidates will be chosen!

For a very intense few weeks, the newest members of the cabin crew will be put through rigorous training. Some people won’t make it through these weeks but if you are determined, focused and study for the multitude of tests, you will do it!

The training will take about 6 weeks and includes exams everyday, emergency landings, fire training and security and ditching in water. The training is very physically demanding and can be emotionally draining but so worth it! You will learn all about the different Virgin Atlantic aircraft types, where everything is on the aircraft and you will also be tested on life support protocols.

Working Life

Unlike some airlines, such as British Airways, there is only one fleet at Virgin Atlantic, so you are all one big team!  Your rosters will differ every month but your flights will generally consist of long haul flights with a day or two stopover in the destination. Virgin Atlantic does the occasional charter flight which might be short haul, but otherwise all of their flights are long haul.

Working for Virgin Atlantic is great because they fly to some amazing destinations which you can explore during your stop overs. They fly to many holiday destinations as well as cities. Some destinations do not have regular flights, which means an extra long stay for you as crew too!

Virgin Atlantic cabin crew are paid industry average in terms of wages. Their salary is made up of base pay (around £13,000 per annum), trip pay (£25 per sector) and an overnight allowance. The overnight allowance varies depending on how long the trip is and the destination. This money is loaded onto a a debit card, known as the ‘little red card’, and you get to keep the money that you don’t spend. You are also entitled to generous staff travel benefits.

Accommodation 

There is no need for accommodation when working for Virgin Atlantic as you will be based at either London Gatwick or London Heathrow, where you will be expected to have your own accommodation. High quality hotels are provided down-route.

Which Airline Has the Best Business Class Seats?

Time to break down some of our favorite business class seats..

When it comes to choosing the best business class experience, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Different airlines offer unique features and perks that cater to a variety of traveler preferences, from gourmet dining and luxurious lounges to innovative seat designs and exceptional service.

In this post, we’re breaking down some of our favorite business class seats from three top airlines—Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic—to help you decide which might be the best fit for your next journey.

Whether you're prioritizing comfort, privacy, or an unforgettable in-flight dining experience, we'll guide you through what each airline has to offer, so you can make an informed decision for your upcoming trip.

1. Turkish Airlines

Voted the Best Airline in Europe, the Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines is always one of our favorite airlines to fly.

With the dedicated check-in counter and security line, business class check-in is a quick and stress free experience.

All of the Turkish Airlines lounges are amazing, but if you ever get the opportunity to experience the Business Class Lounge in Istanbul, we’d highly recommend it.

This lounge is absolutely massive and includes masseuses, billiard rooms and amazing food. One unique part of the Istanbul lounge is the secret hotel with access available to passengers that meet a few special criteria (must be business class passengers, must have at least an 8 hour long flight departing from Istanbul, and you must have a layover of 4-9 hours).

Food and Drinks

Turkish Airlines does business class meal times on a different level than any other airline we’ve flown before and we always look forward to the experience.

Instead of just bringing pre-portioned dinners to each seat, Turkish Airlines’ chefs push around carts of appetizers, mains, and desserts for you to pick from (baklava and apricot ice cream, anyone?). There are plentiful tasty vegetarian options too! Breakfast is your standard meal service of champagne, a cheese plate and a main dish.

The new Turkish Airlines Business Class seats are very sleek and reminded us of a fancy BMW. Each seat includes the standard TV and lie-flat seats.

There is plenty of legroom but the foot hole is a lot smaller than we’ve seen on other airlines. If you are seated next to a stranger, your flight might be a little rough because there is not much privacy between seats but it’s great for flying with friends or family.

Amenity Kit

Turkish Airlines is the only airline we have experienced that gives out separate amenity kits for men and women. These luxurious Ferragamo branded kits include all the typical amenity kit fare including slippers, lip balm and other small toiletries.

The Turkish Airlines staff is always friendly, professional and go above and beyond to make sure you have a pleasant journey!

2. Qatar Airways

We’ve flown Business and First Class on many different Airlines, but our experience on Qatar Qsuites was one of our absolute favorites!

When flying business class with Qatar, the lounge isn’t just a place to rest before a long journey, it is part of the journey.

The business class lounge in Doha is absolutely massive and has everything you could ever need from water features to a full bar, multiple sit-down restaurants, and relaxation rooms to shower or take a nap before the flight.

It seems like we say this about every business class flight, but the meals on Qatar’s business class are just next level.

For starters, Qatar is one of the only airlines we’ve flown that serves candlelit dinners (not real candles of course). Meals might include dishes like lobster, caviar, Arabic mezze boards, and paneer curry.

Qatar’s Qsuites are one of the only business class seats in the world that include lie-flat double beds for couples or families, which was one of the biggest perks of these seats for us.

Those flying alone will get their own lie-flat single bed and all of the suites have a sliding door which provides ultimate privacy. Each suite also includes a 21.5-inch TV with hundreds of movies and music playlists for passengers to enjoy.

Every passenger receives an amenity kit stocked with skincare from Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio, socks, and an eye mask.

When it’s time for bed, the flight attendants will bring a set of pajamas for everyone, which feels very fancy as this is an amenity usually reserved for first class passengers.

3. Virgin Atlantic

Before flying Virgin Atlantic upper class, we had heard a lot of hype and anticipated this would be one of our favorite business class seats ever. Our experience did not disappoint!

Like other airlines, Virgin Atlantic has a dedicated check-in desk for business class passengers. We weren’t super blown away by the service here, but it got the job done.

Every business class passenger gets access to the Virgin Atlantic clubhouse. For some reason, Virgin Atlantic likes to give things unique names so clubhouse is just another name for a lounge.

If your airport doesn't have a Virgin clubhouse, you’ll get access to a partner lounge, like the Delta Lounge. In our lounge we enjoyed food and drinks on the outdoor deck before boarding our flight.

The meals on Virgin Atlantic are an integral part of the business class experience. Dinner is a 4-course meal served on linen tablecloths and branded plates. We appreciated the seasonal menu options that were healthy and very delicious.

This might sound funny, but Virgin Atlantic is famous for their airplane shaped salt and pepper shakers (dubbed Wilbur and Orville) that passengers are quietly encouraged to take home as a souvenir of their business class experience.

We have not seen anything like the Virgin Atlantic business class seats on any other airlines. First off, the seat design is very unique. Everything is sleek and beautiful with red and white leather that gives off total sports car vibes.

The tray table is huge and sets up just under the TV that glides out of the seat with the press of a button. All of the seats in a row are facing different directions, which provides a lot of privacy. You never have to look at another passenger if you don’t want to.

The beds are not completely lie-flat, but enough that you’ll be able to get a good night's rest.

The Virgin Atlantic amenity kit includes all the standard items but in eco-friendly versions which environmentally-conscious passengers will surely appreciate.

In our experience, the staff on Virgin Atlantic are AMAZING. Maybe the British accents had something to do with it, but we felt very taken care of the entire flight. Seriously, we have nothing but good things to say about the crew!

Which One is Best?

Let’s start with a quick disclaimer that regardless of which airline you choose, flying business class is a million times better than economy.

All of the business class seats we have flown have had their own unique perks, so it’s hard to say which one is the best business class suite of them all.

The airline you chose to fly with will probably all depend on the experience you are looking for. If you’re flying as a couple or a family, Qatar’s Qsuites will provide a private space for you to enjoy your flight together.

If flying business class for you is all about the food, Turkish Airlines’ dinner service is so much fun to experience. And if you’re looking to fly in pure, modern luxury, Virgin Atlantic’s (possibly?) Ferrari-inspired business class seats are right for you.

Every member of the Virgin Atlantic team is entitled to discounted staff travel – but they can only take it when there’s a spare seat on an aircraft. Unsurprisingly, that means Virgin’s staff are extremely interested in finding out how many seats are available on upcoming flights. In Virgin-speak, that’s called checking the ‘load’.

Virgin Atlantic to offer seasonal London-Cape Town flights

Virgin atlantic seasonal flights return.

D ue to its’ popularity, Virgin Atlantic will soon resume its’ seasonal winter route from London to Cape Town, this time with a month-long extension.

According to Travel News , the seasonal flights, which usually run from October to March, will now continue until 30 April 2025.

“The extension has been made to cover the higher demand over the Easter period,” Virgin Atlantic Country Manager for South Africa, Marc Harding, told Travel News .

Flights will take off on Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9, the airline’s most fuel-efficient aircraft, which offers travellers the option of Upper Class, Premium and Economy Light, Classic and Delight cabins.

A return to the Mother City

Back in May 2022, Virgin Atlantic announced that they would be resuming their direct services between Cape Town and London, for the first time since 2015. Operations officially began in November 2022, making Virgin Atlantic flights to Cape Town available, once more,  on a daily basis .

Cape Town one of the most affordable destinations for Britons

Time Out  recently listed the 15 most affordable holiday destinations for UK travellers for 2024 and South Africa’s very own Mother City took the number two spot.

Based on data from the 18th annual Post Office Travel Money’s ‘Holiday Money Report’, which takes into account a change in currency value compared to the British pound, as well as the local price of eight tourist essentials (coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, suncream, insect repellent and a three course meal), the study determined which destinations are most affordable to visit. 

Cape Town, which came in first spot in last year’s same ranking, placed second, as prices of the eight essentials increased in 2024 by nearly 5% to cost £54.35.

Virgin Atlantic extends seasonal London to Cape Town service

Virgin Atlantic has announced an extension of its popular seasonal service between London Heathrow (LHR) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) for the 2024/25 season. Due to increased demand, the airline will now operate flights until 30 April 2025, covering the UK’s Easter school holidays.

The service, which typically runs from October to March, has been extended by an additional month to cater to the growing number of travellers seeking to visit Cape Town during the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn, a period known for mild weather and popular events like the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Virgin Atlantic operates this route using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offering passengers a choice between Economy, Premium, and Upper-Class cabins. The extended schedule provides both UK holidaymakers and South African tourists with greater flexibility in planning their trips.

This move reinforces Cape Town’s status as a key destination for British tourists, with increased connectivity expected to boost local tourism and business travel.
