What's New?

The facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari have been launched in India. The Tata Harrier facelift is priced from Rs 15.49 lakh with prices for the automatic starting from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier Dark Edition is priced from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Safari facelift's prices, meanwhile, start from Rs 16.19 lakh with the automatics and Dark Edition variants both priced from Rs 20.69 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The prices are introductory and valid for a limited period. The SUVs are priced at a premium over the outgoing models but pack in a lot more tech than before.

Starting with the exterior, both SUVs now get greater differentiation in design. Both SUVs retain the split headlamp design but now feature full-width lightbars up top with the main headlamps positioned lower down. Both SUVs also get different design bumpers with the Harrier featuring more triangular housings for the headlamps to the Safari’s more rectangular housings. The Safari also gets a silver-finished faux skid-plate element while the Harrier gets a black-finished piece. At the rear, both SUVs get revised tail lamps with a lightbar element along with redesigned bumpers.

Inside, both SUVs get a revised dashboard design with new control surfaces and more tech. Top models now feature a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, each trim level – Persona in Tata speak – gets its own unique interior trim finishes to stand out. There’s a lot to talk about by way of features as well with both SUVs packing in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, powered tailgates, panoramic sunroof with mood lights, electronic parking brake with auto hold, ventilated front seats, ventilated seats in second row (Safari), powered driver seat and more.

Tata has also revised the variant names going from the previous XE, XM, XT and XZ variants to using Smart, Pure, Adventure, Fearless and Accomplished. As with the outgoing model, Tata is offering both SUVs with the Dark Edition variants.

Expert Review on Tata Safari

  • Solid Road Presence
  • Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
  • Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
  • Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
  • Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
  • Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the mileage?

  • Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
  • Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Tata Motors is on a wild update streak with its models. First, the Nexon got an update, then the Harrier and now, the flagship Safari gets a revamp. This isn't a minor nip and tuck job, because Tata has gone to town with the changes, and crucially, has focused on giving the Safari its own identity, rather than it being deemed as just a Harrier with a third row. It gets a completely new look, refreshed interior with modern tech and mechanical changes. Let’s see how well it has worked out.

Tata Safari facelift exterior styling

The Safari carries over Tata’s new design language without any change to the sheet metal. The ‘soft’ parts like the bumpers, grille and lights are all new and this has completely changed the look of the car. The LED Daytime Running Lamp runs across the width of the nose, with the Safari also getting sequential turn indicators. The ‘parametric’ grille is a single-piece unit compared to the Harrier’s split setup and is a point of differentiation between the two models, and, for the Safari, they are body-coloured. Further down, the LED headlamps and LED fog lamps are housed in a black casing, which also gets Safari lettering in chrome. Since there is no split grille, the air intake is blacked out with a faux metal scuff plate for that butch look.

top model safari car price

Over to the side, the Safari gets 19-inch wheels on the top-spec variant and 17- and 18-inch options on the lower trims. The wheels do a very good job of adding road presence, and also get aero inserts that help reduce drag. You might also remember the wheel design that was previewed on the Tata Sierra concept shown at the Auto Expo. The alloys are wrapped with 245/55 R19 tyres, and being relatively lower profile, they have an impact on ride quality. More on that in a bit. Other Safari traits continue like a rising shoulder line and the roof with the famous kink.

top model safari car price

At the rear, things are simpler, with revisions to the tail-lamps, which make it sharper, and an LED strip joining the two. The bumper too is all new with sharp lines, and there is a faux metal bash plate for that rugged look. That said, one of the most important updates is seen when you wag your leg under the bumper: the boot now gets gesture control for opening, and is finally electric.

Tata Safari facelift interior and features

Like the Harrier, the Safari comes specced with the ‘persona’ that you choose. The top-spec ‘Accomplished’ gets a dual-tone interior with white and brown upholstery. It has an air of premiumness, but the light-coloured seats and panels on the steering and doors will be difficult to maintain. The passenger side also gets an artificial wood panel with pinstriping which looks upmarket but may not be to everyone’s tastes.

top model safari car price

The Safari gets the same four-spoke steering as the Harrier along with a gloss black panel and the backlit Tata logo that you just can't keep free of smudges and marks. There is also a fully digital instrument cluster that has customisable layouts, and the option of a map view once you’ve connected your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That said, for a full map view, Android users will have to use Google Maps and Apple users will have to use Apple Maps. The cluster also displays drive mode changes, terrain mode changes and ADAS settings as well. The brightness, sharpness and overall viewing angles are good.

Next is the 12.3-inch touchscreen that gets wireless connectivity for Apple and Android and is slick to respond. It also packs in a lot of the settings for HVAC, ADAS, air purifier, audio modes and mood lighting. The audio system is also updated from a 9-speaker system to 10 speakers, along with a sub-woofer and 13 presets in the screen to choose from. The presets are very well calibrated and do enhance the music experience. You can also have individual modes for individual seats making the whole experience even more personal. The other highlight on the Safari is the 360-degree camera, which is high resolution and is a big plus while manoeuvring this SUV.

top model safari car price

Under the screen are the HVAC controls on a gloss black panel, with the only physical buttons being the temperature toggles for the dual-zone climate control. Everything else, including the fan speed, is on a touch-based panel. Adjusting the fan speed or even functions like the electric tailgate opening is rather difficult as the feedback and response from the panel aren’t good. On the move, this would be an even more frustrating experience, and it’s better to use voice commands, which, despite not being the quickest, at least doesn't let you fumble.

Further down is a wireless charging pad that is difficult to access. You need to angle your phone in an awkward manner trying to dodge the knurled terrain response selector and cram your phone in, which, inevitably, will hit the panels around. Taking it out is the same story as you more often than not end up hitting the HVAC buttons or scraping your phone. For charging, there is a USB-A and a 45W type-C port as well.

top model safari car price

Next is the terrain response selector that is unnecessarily large, and beside it are the non-backlit drive mode buttons. When you do change the drive modes, however, the ambient lighting too changes colour momentarily. Green for Eco, blue for City and red for Sport. What’s also new on the Safari is the drive selector for the automatic version, which is a shift-by-wire mechanism, and an electric parking brake, which replaces the aircraft-style brake lever on the top-spec version. The centre storage also gets vents to be used as a cool box, and a USB-A and a type-C port as well.

Tata Safari facelift seating

The seats on the new Safari are powered for both driver and passenger with memory functions for the driver and ventilation for both. They are fairly broad and supportive, but cushioning is on the firmer side. However, on the whole, the new Safari is leaps ahead of the previous gen, both in terms of features and design.

top model safari car price

There has been no change to the Safari’s wheelbase, so space in the middle row remains unchanged, The captain seat version also gets ventilation and there are USB-A and type-C ports here as well. There are AC vents in the B-pillar too, but surprisingly, no blower control for the middle row. The theatre-like seating position allows you to get a good view out, and the addition of sunblinds is a plus to have on hot days. What further elevates the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof, which gets ambient lighting and adds flair to the cabin at night.

Entering the third row past the captain seats isn’t easy since they don’t tumble down. They only recline and don’t slide forward enough for easy access. It’s easier to use the space between the two seats as a passage to access the third row. However, once you’re seated at the back, the amount of room is impressive even for tall adults. Sure, headroom is tight for occupants over six feet, but the adjustable backrest angle and sliding middle row make the third row properly usable, and the most spacious in its class. There are three-point seat belts for two, individual headrests, AC blower controls and USB-A and a type-C ports. The downside is the boot space, which, with all three rows up, is only good for a couple of soft bags.

In terms of safety, the Safari gets the usual goody bag of sensors and assists, along with ADAS. The Safari gets six airbags as standard, and the top-spec version gets an additional knee airbag, taking the count to seven.

Tata Safari engine, gearbox and performance

The updated Safari gets the same 2.0-litre diesel engine making 170hp and 350Nm as before, but in BS6.2 guise. Tata claims to have upped the damping and refinement but, to be honest, it is still one of the sore points of the Safari: there is that typical diesel clatter at idle that seeps into the cabin. As you get going and the engine speed rises, the gruff noise increases. That said, the engine feels strong to perform and has a wide torque band. Mid-range is where you will get that punch, and response overall is solid. The Safari is also very happy and comfortable at highway speeds. Changing the drive modes also changes the response, just as before. In Eco and City, the engine is laidback, but switch to Sport, and there is a noticeable gain in response. This is largely to do with the pedal mapping, which, as you change modes, alters the response to the accelerator, giving you a noticeable change in driving manners.

top model safari car price

Mated to the engine is the same six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Quick shifts and lightning-fast responses are not something it prefers, and the shifts are carried over in a leisurely manner. Sure, sport mode does help, but inherently, it's a relaxed gearbox.

To gain more control, there is also the option of paddle shifters, a new addition in the updated Safari. However, they don’t particularly enhance the driving experience as manually shifting via the paddles isn’t very quick or responsive. Operate the paddle shifters and the powertrain automatically defaults to Sport mode, but the experience isn’t exactly sporty. The shifts are slow and downshifts are frustratingly delayed if the engine is at high revs. This doesn’t allow for enthusiastic manual shifting and it's best to let the gearbox work on its own. What is another irritant is operating the new shift-by-wire shifter, which requires the right technique. During three-point turns, shifting from D to R and back is a fiddly affair, since there isn't a clear response from the lever. It often gets stuck in N or simply doesn’t change the gear. This will take owners some time to get used to, and a lot of patience.

Tata Safari handling and ride comfort

Speaking of three-point turns, arguably the biggest and the most important update on this Safari is the steering system. Gone is the older hydraulic power steering unit, and in its place is a modern electric power steering (EPS) that has transformed the way the Safari handles. To start off, at low and city speeds, you no longer have to muscle the car around, and get your arm workout done. The steering is light and easy in Eco and City mode, making parking very convenient. In Sports, it does weigh up to add some feel while driving. Three-point turns are done with minimal effort and getting it out of tight spots is very easy too. Tata has also increased the track on the new Safari owing to the bigger wheels, but it isn't something that was noticeable through corners.

On the subject of ride, Tata has retuned the suspension with updated dampers, spring rates and new bushings, giving the Safari a softer setup than before. However, shod with big, 19-inch wheels and lower profile tyres, bump absorption is compromised. Over a broken patch of road, you will notice sharp movements and potholes are met with quite a thud. The toughness of that Land Rover platform does shine through with the taut and tight body control the faster you go. On the highway, the ride is composed and flat, and the sense of control and stability you get is the hallmark of the Safari, which makes it a great high speed cruiser.

Tata Safari ADAS performance

The other big talking point on the Safari is the ADAS: it gets adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Lane keep assist is also part of the package, but will be introduced later as a software update.

top model safari car price

In our conditions, the ADAS works well, especially the adaptive cruise control which does the job even at slow bumper-to-bumper speeds. The lane departure warning system is good at detecting lanes correctly too. What could have been better, is the automatic emergency braking. We found that despite driving closer than usual to the car in front (done for testing the ADAS) it did not activate the brakes, despite adjusting the setting of the brake activation to the maximum distance. Tata claims this is done specifically with India’s erratic traffic conditions, but we would have liked the emergency braking to kick in from a safe distance. Rear cross-traffic alerts and blind spot monitoring, on the other hand, work flawlessly.

Another plus point is that the Safari, along with the new Harrier, recently received a 5-star rating in adult and child occupant protection by Global NCAP.

Tata Safari verdict

Prices for the Safari start at Rs 16.19 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom, India) for the base Smart manual variant.  With this update, many of the Safari’s weaknesses have been addressed, with the electric power steering, electric tail gate, more features and a modern design. However, the engine refinement and some ergonomic issues are still present.

top model safari car price

But what the Safari will be banking on is its fantastic road presence, hugely practical and spacious cabin, and lastly, the wide array of variants on offer. It sure is a lot more car for the money now, and that’s something SUV buyers today are willing to pay for.

What is the logic of such a steep price hike within 4 years? Not just this model, it seems like the luxury makers have collectively driven up pricing of all models in the last 5 years in a super aggressive manner - which is neither linked to change in taxes/ duties or exchange rates. Could this be a collusion of some sorts?

Tata Safari Storme 2019 Verdict

The Safari has always been known for its presence and mighty demeanour and continues to do the same despite its design being decades old now. It is a spacious vehicle that will take a whole family of five with all their luggage without having to worry about broken roads or bad patches. But it feels too old now especially when compared to its modern competition.

Tata Cars Price in India - June 2024

Part of the gigantic Tata group founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, Tata Motors is one of the leading Indian car manufacturers. Established in 1945, Tata Motors’ diverse portfolio includes an extensive range of cars, sport utility vehicles, trucks, buses and defence vehicles. Jaguar and Land Rover; the two prestigious British car brands were acquired by Tata back in 2008.

Tata launched the Tata Indica in 1998; its first passenger car in India, which paved the way for the future models to come. Tata (Telco back then) was also responsible for bringing the three-pointed star (Mercedes-Benz) to India in 1995.

Product portfolio

Hatchback: Tata’s hatchbacks’ portfolio ranges from the Tiago to the Altroz.

Micro SUV: Tata offers the Punch as an entry-level micro SUV. It takes on the Mahindra KUV100 NXT and Maruti Ignis but due to its price, it also rivals the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.

Sub-compact SUV: The Tata Nexon represents Tata in one of the most competitive SUV segments in the industry where it goes up against the likes of Kia Sonet, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Venue.

EV: Tata ventured into the personal EV space with the Nexon EV which was then followed by the Tigor EV.

Mid-size SUV: With underpinnings derived from the Land Rover division, Tata offers the Tata Harrier and the Tata Safari as competitors to the mid-size 5-seater SUV segment and three-row SUV space, respectively.

Sedan: Successor to the Tata Zest, Tata Tigor is a sub-4 metre sedan offered by Tata which rivals the Hyundai Aura, Maruti Dzire, and Honda Amaze.

Greatest Hits

Tata’s top products in India have been:

Tata Safari: First made-in-India 4WD SUV, popular for its bold looks and off-road capabilities.

Tata Nano: At the time of launch, the Tata Nano was priced at Rs 1 lakh, making it the most affordable production car in the world.

Tata Nexon EV: Most affordable and practical long-range electric vehicle in its space.

Tata Indigo: A value for money proposition, Tata Indigo was one of the highest selling cars for Tata.

Tata Indica: India’s first fully indegenous vehicle, it ticked all the boxes for a hatchback at the time. It was also the most affordable diesel powered vehicle when it was launched in 1998

Tata Sumo: A rugged utility vehicle, Tata Sumo was the go-to car capable of taking on rural territories with ease.

Future Plans

Tata has shown great zeal towards electrification of its portfolio, as it’s the only brand with two electric vehicles available in the market at the moment. Tata Motors plans to have 10 EVs in its portfolio by 2025, which will include the Altroz EV and the Punch EV.

Tata Car User Reviews

For our recent trip to Rishikesh, we decided to take the Tata Punch and it proved to be a powerful little performer. The 1.2 liter Revotron petrol engine with 86 PS and 113 Nm torque handled the hill roads well. Despite its compact size, the high ground clearance of 187 mm helped us navigate through rough patches easily. The infotainment system and spacious cabin made the long drive comfortable, although the engine does get a bit noisy on highways.

I took the Tata Nexon on a weekend to Jaipur and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The car felt stable even at higher speeds on the Jaipur Highway. We were impressed with its 5 star Global NCAP safety rating which makes it a secure choice for family trips. The Harman powered infotainment system was a joy to use but I did find the touch response a bit sluggish compared to the Hyundai Venue. The 16 km/l fuel efficiency is decent but in real world conditions, it went down to around 14 km/l.

I recently took my Tata Harrier on a road trip from Delhi to Manali and I must say , it is a beast on the road. The 2.0 liter Kryotec diesel engine delivers 170 PS and 350 Nm torque, makes it powerful enough for hills rides. The panoramic sunroof gave us some stunning mountain views and the 14 speaker JBL sound system kept our mood high throughout the trip. The Harrier is quite bulky and movement of this through the narrow lanes of Himachal Pradesh was a bit challenging.

My family and I recently bought the new Tata Safari and we could not wait to take it on a long drive down the scenic routes of Kerala. Equipped with a 2.0 liter Kryotec diesel engine producing 170PS, the Safari handled everything with ease whether it was winding roads or smooth highways. The panoramic sunroof added a beautiful touch to our road trip by providing scenic views and endless fun for the kids.

A few weeks ago, I took my Tata Altroz to my father's house . I chose the 1.2L Revotron petrol variant, delivering a decent 84 BHP power. The Altroz’s premium design and 5 star Global NCAP safety rating were the key factors in my choice. The car felt very stable due to its solid build specially while navigating on roads. The 345 liter boot space was just enough for our essentials, though a bit more could have been better. The lack of rear AC vents was noticeable in Village's heat.

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf).

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations.

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers.

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

1. lada granta.

top model safari car price

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000).

2. Lada Vesta

top model safari car price

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car.

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

top model safari car price

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals.

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

top model safari car price

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model.

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

top model safari car price

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

top model safari car price

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner.

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800).

7. Lada Niva

top model safari car price

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas.

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

top model safari car price

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.”

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

top model safari car price

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

top model safari car price

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).

EV Comparison Test: The best electric SUV for the average price of a new car in 2024

G oing electric on a budget might sound like a far-fetched idea, but you can hop into a highly competent EV for a perfectly acceptable price in 2024. The average cost of a new car these days hovers between $45,000 and $50,000, or right around $10,000 more expensive than it was just five years ago. Does “average” also mean “affordable?” Your perspective may depend on whether your paycheck has swelled at the same rate as new car prices . This is the new normal regardless of the country’s ability to afford it, so we used the average price of a new car as a guide to pit several electric SUVs right smack dab in the middle of the car market against each other.

Entrants for comparing electric SUVs include the Tesla Model Y Long Range, Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, Hyundai Kona Electric Limited and Kia Niro EV Wave. We invited mainstays like the Ford Mustang Mach-E , Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 (and even the Nissan Ariya ), but those automakers either declined to participate or elected to send alternative vehicles. Of course, the Tesla was a rental, but a necessary entry considering the SUV’s popularity – it was quite literally the best-selling vehicle in the world in 2023 .

“The affordability of electric vehicles is a hot-button issue, as technology, value and even politics are intersecting in ways the car business seldom sees,” Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore said. “With this test, we sought to analyze the merits of these vehicles through the lens of the consumer, while weighing their strengths and weaknesses against cost.”

With the field feeling a little lopsided in stature from the beginning, it became a question of which EV is the best value for around $45,000. While the low-trim and spartan Model Y and ID.4 had size on their side, both the Niro EV and Kona Electric came fully loaded with every goodie in the trick-or-treat bag. Other vitals like driving dynamics, charging speed, range and the charging network itself played into the scoring. In the end, two EVs shone the brightest, but there can only be one winner.

Fourth place: Kia Niro EV Wave. $46,760; 155 points

Our very own Senior Editor James Riswick just so happens to own a Niro EV, but it fared the worst in this test. Like the Kona Electric, the Niro EV starts out life under a platform that supports multiple powertrain types — in the Niro ’s case from a regular hybrid to a PHEV. Its lowlights are its charging performance, mediocre driving enjoyment, no federal tax credit and general lack of utility versus others in this test.

Personality-wise, the Niro EV wins big, though. Its slick aero blade scythes from top to bottom. The car-like height and hatchback utility give it an attractive stance with plenty of practicality. That said, the backseat and cargo space (while fine for some use cases) are undeniably tight compared to the ID.4 and Model Y. At least the tech interface is a roaring success, as most of us found the switchable toolbar center stack and dual widescreens sitting before us a great interface to use, minus the absent wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Unfortunately for the Niro EV, we can’t overlook its sticking points in spite of its strengths. Fast-charging peaks at 85 kilowatts, which makes it a poor road trip vehicle. We saw no better than 77 kW when testing the Niro EV’s charging capability on Electrify America chargers , which is going to require some patience in the parking lot should you rely on public chargers.

Driving the Niro EV isn’t exactly a heart-pounding experience either, as it takes a second for its 188 pound-feet of torque to get those front wheels (no AWD option, another strike) turning before traction control reins them back in. It’s sorta fun to try and manage the silly torque steer, but Kia hasn’t designed the chassis to encourage any sort of enthusiastic driving.

“I was having a grand time scooting around in it until I was thoroughly embarrassed by a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid pulling away from a stoplight,” Associate Editor Byron Hurd noted. “These 2WD EVs are a lot like diesels; the torque makes them feel a lot quicker than they really are. And that's the Kia in a nutshell – it feels like a lot more car than it really is, and that's just not good enough in a segment becoming saturated with dedicated BEV models.”

Third place: Hyundai Kona Electric Limited. $42,420; 165 points

Most of what we said about the Niro EV also applies to the Kona Electric, but despite how similar these two are, the Kona is a shoo-in over the Niro. Having just been redesigned for 2024, it enjoys a much more coherent and feature-rich tech interface than the Niro. Its plethora of physical interior buttons are a big plus in our book, and the design simply brings more excitement to the table in terms of colors and textiles. Not to mention, it’s over $4,000 less than the Kia, and the Niro doesn’t do much to make up for its extra cost.

The Kona’s charging – 100 kW max speed – is also notably better than the Niro EV, though it’s hard to get very excited about that still-slow charging or even how the Kona Electric drives. Its soft chassis tuning makes for a comfy and forgiving ride, and while the previous generation Kona was known for its enthusiast-friendly handling, this one prioritizes plushness and size over all-out driving capability. This turn toward civility also means the Kona is a respectable size, hauling along a big enough back seat and an eminently usable cargo space for how small it is. That said, it’s no better than the Niro where utility is concerned and certainly takes a backseat to the ID.4 and Model Y.

To make up for a lack of space, all those features like ventilated seats, mega-huge screens and epic upholstery help the Kona stand out in ways it probably shouldn’t in this crowd. None of its pluses bring it near the top of the leaderboard, but the Kona is an EV that can work splendidly for many folks’ lifestyles.

“This is the EV I'd want to hop into for jaunts around the city, being able to dice it up in traffic, maneuver tight parking lots and narrow one-way streets, and fling around every corner I encounter,” Senior Editor, Electric, John Beltz Snyder writes. “I also appreciate the tech on hand — the infotainment system is user-friendly, and the safety systems work well without being annoying. It's a shame about the rear-seat space (still a little tight for families) and slow charging rates, though.”

Second place: Volkswagen ID.4 Pro. $46,595 (w/tax credit $39,095); 177 points

The ID.4 Pro came a mere point away from stealing this comparo, and a couple of editors even voted for it to win. Its value proposition is spectacular since it’s able to take advantage of the point-of-purchase $7,500 tax credit. That leaves you with a family-friendly EV that can go 291 miles on a charge and get you back on the road in a semi-reasonable time on a road trip, and it still drives commendably well.

One important item to note for this ID.4 is that it’s the refreshed 2024 model with the new infotainment system and more powerful electric motor. Funnily enough, that infotainment system is still a weak point despite it being vastly improved compared to its predecessor . We’d suggest using the wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as much as possible. The lack of amenities inside the ID.4 compared to the Niro and Kona are reflective of its price, and cost-savings in the form of dreary interior appointments and mediocre materials keep it from being aces across the board. Another interior snag on the ID.4 are its manual seats (no power at this trim level!) with its slide adjustment lever sticking far enough out from under the seat that it would often tangle with our ankles getting in and out.

The more powerful electric motor from its refresh makes the ID.4 the second-most exciting vehicle to drive in this test, though, as it scoots forward with enough verve to keep us entertained going straight. Of course, it’s nowhere near as exhilarating to drive as the Model Y, but a get-around-town SUV doesn’t necessarily need to be a 0-to-60 barnstormer. We enjoyed the forgiving ride on rougher roads, though its composure through corners had us scratching our heads a bit. The ID.4 drives around on its tippy-toes, a little unsure of itself before taking a more confident set. And man, those brakes are a real downer. There’s no one-pedal drive mode like every other car in this test, and the pedal feel is egregiously squishy and difficult to modulate. Just fixing a few of these driving snags might have been enough to tip the scales in the ID.4’s favor.

So why’s the ID.4 come home in second? Despite its downsides, the Volkswagen doesn’t suffer from the more debilitating compromises seen in the Niro EV and Kona Electric. It’s built on a dedicated EV platform and enjoys the benefits of such construction like a big 82 kWh battery pack with an impressive 175 kW max charge rate and a superior RWD layout. Plus, its spacious backseat and cargo area see it skyrocket ahead in utility scores. The near-win is really driven home when you see the price is under $40,000 thanks to its ability to qualify for the federal tax credit.

“It's awesome to drive a single-motor EV that feels really gutsy, thanks to that punchier 285-horsepower rear unit,” News Editor Joel Stocksdale said. “And the whole car feels so light and tossable. With that light nose, too, it dives for corners unlike most crossovers of this size, electric or otherwise. I genuinely had fun driving it, and that goes a long way with me. I've come away from the ID.4 as a real defender for it.”

First place: Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. $52,630 (w/tax credit $45,130); 178 points

The Tesla wins by a hair. When you take a look around at what $45,000 can buy you in the world of EVs, there simply isn’t a more comprehensive package of range, performance, charging network, interior space and tech than what the Model Y offers.

Our tester was a 2021 model year rental in the Long Range AWD spec – today, that model is rated for 292 miles and does the 0-60-mph sprint in 4.8 seconds. It feels damn quick from behind the wheel, and its handling backs up the acceleration with excellent composure and balance at every turn. There’s zero doubt that the Model Y is the most fun-to-drive car in this comparison, from its sporty steering to the rapid response to every input, there’s plenty for an enthusiast to enjoy.

Its ride and general refinement are the exact opposite, as a crashy suspension over road heaves and general rattliness are off-putting on poor roads. Sure, our test car had over 40,000 miles on it, but that’s no excuse for a rear suspension booming and crashing over bumps as much as it did. That would get tiresome on a road trip, but, despite that, the Model Y is the best road trip vehicle in this group. The Tesla Supercharger network – while coming soon to other brands – is the single biggest advantage Tesla holds over the competition. It’s not just access to chargers either, but the ease with which you can locate them, pay and get back on the road again seamlessly. Plus, the Model Y charges fast at a peak of 250-kW, meaning your stops will be far quicker than most other EVs. During testing, the bank of Electrify America chargers were going in and out of service all day (something we see commonly when testing EVs), but there wasn’t a single hiccup over at the Superchargers we tried out.

The Model Y’s infotainment system drew a mixed bag of reactions. Many of us applauded its fluid and iPad-like functionality, but it’s a good thing the screen is as competent as it is because the lack of an instrument cluster or HUD is still a huge knock against the Tesla. There are shortcuts, gestures and more that you learn when you spend more time with the system that don’t necessarily present themselves at first glance. This can make first impressions rougher than most, but spend time learning what Tesla has designed, and you’re likely going to enjoy a lot of its tech. Most of us made our peace with the system, minus some grumbling about the absence of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Lastly, it’s impossible to talk Tesla without mentioning Autopilot and Full-Self Driving (note that it’s a Level 2 system and not autonomous). Our test car was subscribed to FSD – $99 per month these days – and we tested it extensively. In many cases, like the highway, it’s a splendid stress reliever that you can largely rely on. But it will also steer you very wrong off the interstate in ways that are verging on uncomfortable to dangerous. Use it in the areas that Tesla has better ironed out at this point, though, and it becomes a huge positive for the Model Y over the others.

“Judged solely on specifications, the Model Y travels further and charges faster than anything else in its price range,” Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski wrote. “It’s also quick, full of technology, safe and reliable. As much as I may complain about its bland and bulbous styling, the lack of instrumentation in front of the driver and its oddly loud and boomy cabin — which, incidentally, isn’t an issue that plagues the Model 3 sedan — the overall Model Y package is just plain superior to its competition.”

For right around the average price of a new car today, the Model Y is the most EV you can buy. There are cheaper (and perhaps even better) options coming like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Volvo EX30 . And if we had entry-level versions of cars like the Ioniq 5 or EV6 , the results may not add up the same, but, for today, the Model Y stands tall.

Electric Cars Are Suddenly Becoming Affordable

More efficient manufacturing, falling battery costs and intense competition are lowering sticker prices for battery-powered models to within striking distance of gasoline cars.

Three electric vehicles parked at a dealership. There are several yellow school buses in the background.

By Jack Ewing

Alex Lawrence, a dealer in Salt Lake City who specializes in used electric cars, has seen a change over the last year in the kinds of customers who are coming into his showroom. They used to be well-heeled professionals who could drop $70,000 on a Rivian luxury pickup truck.

Recently, Mr. Lawrence said, customers have been snapping up used Teslas for a little over $20,000, after applying a $4,000 federal tax credit.

“We’re seeing younger people,” Mr. Lawrence said. “We are seeing more blue-collar and entry-level white-collar people. The purchase price of the car has suddenly become in reach.”

Regarded by conservative politicians and other critics as playthings of the liberal elite, electric vehicles are fast becoming more accessible. Prices are falling because of increased competition, lower raw-material costs and more efficient manufacturing. Federal tax credits of up to $7,500 for new electric cars, often augmented by thousands of dollars in state incentives, push prices even lower.

At the same time, technology is improving quickly and making electric vehicles more practical. Cars that can travel more than 300 miles on a fully charged battery are becoming common, and charging times are dropping below 30 minutes. The number of fast chargers, which can top up a battery in less than half an hour, grew 36 percent from April 2023 to April 2024.

Carmakers including Tesla, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, the owner of Jeep, have announced plans for electric vehicles that would sell new for as little as $25,000.

“The E.V. market has hit an inflection point,” said Randy Parker, chief executive of Hyundai Motor America, which will begin producing electric vehicles at a factory in Georgia by the end of the year. “The early adopters have come. They’ve got their cars. Now you’re starting to see us transition to a mass market.”

All this is good news for proponents of electric vehicles and the Biden administration, which is aiming for half of new cars sold to be electric by 2030 as part of the president’s plan to combat climate change. Even if Republicans gain control of the White House and Congress and follow through on promises to dismantle electric vehicle subsidies, they may not be able to undo the market forces pushing down prices.

“There may be some hiccups in the exact pace and scale of E.V. sales if there are major policy changes, but I wouldn’t expect the E.V. market to flatline,” said Peter Slowik, who leads research on passenger cars at the International Council on Clean Transportation, a research organization. “Most automakers are committed to an all-electric future, and many are planning on a timeline that goes far beyond the next administration.”

Electric cars, sales of which have slowed in recent months, are still more expensive than gasoline models, costing an average of $55,252 in the United States in April, according to estimates by Kelley Blue Book. That is a decline of 9 percent from April 2023, but still about $6,700 more than the average for all vehicles.

But Mr. Slowik’s group estimates that cars and sport-utility vehicles capable of traveling 400 miles on a full battery will cost less than cars with internal combustion engines in 2030, even before taking into account government subsidies. (Pickup trucks, which require bigger batteries, will take a little longer, not reaching parity for 400-mile models until 2033.)

Those calculations do not take into account lower fuel and maintenance costs that strengthen the financial argument for electric vehicles. Electricity is almost always cheaper per mile than gasoline, and battery-powered vehicles don’t need oil changes, engine air filters or spark plugs. For people who drive a lot, electric cars may already be a better deal. At the same time, some automakers are offering strong discounts on E.V. models as an enticement for buyers.

While prices are clearly trending downward, there are risks. China supplies more than half of the lithium-ion batteries used in cars sold in the United States, according to Interact Analysis, a research firm. Those batteries will become more expensive because the Biden administration announced in May that it would raise tariffs on them to 25 percent from 7.5 percent.

Many companies are building battery factories in the United States and Canada , but most of these won’t produce enough batteries to replace China for several years.

Raw materials are another risk. The price of lithium and other materials required for batteries has plunged in the last 12 months, making electric cars cheaper. But commodity prices could soar again.

The recent slowdown in the growth of electric car sales has prompted Tesla, Ford and others to delay plans to expand manufacturing. But many analysts expect sales to pick up as a glut of models pushes down prices, and as the charging network grows. High prices and the fear of not being able to find a place to recharge are the two biggest reasons people hesitate to buy an electric vehicle, surveys show.

For many people, the car’s price is not the only expense to consider. People who live in apartments often depend on public charging plugs. Public charging, besides being less convenient, tends to be more costly than charging at home.

Still, the forces pushing prices down are powerful. Manufacturing costs are dropping as traditional carmakers, who were slow to sell electric vehicles, start to apply their decades of experience with mass production to the new technology.

Later this year, for example, General Motors will begin selling an electric version of its Chevrolet Equinox sport-utility vehicle that will have a range of more than 300 miles and sell for less than $30,000 after the $7,500 federal tax credit. And the company plans to sell an even cheaper car, a new Chevrolet Bolt, next year.

The Equinox and Bolt will be built on G.M.’s Ultium platform, a collection of components that can be used for a variety of vehicles including pickups and luxury Cadillacs. G.M., which has cut costs by using the same batteries and parts for different models, has said its electric vehicles will become profitable in the second half of this year.

Electric cars still cost more to manufacture than cars with internal combustion engines, said Prateek Biswas, an analyst at Wood Mackenzie, a research firm. But costs will come down as companies learn how to produce the cars more efficiently, Mr. Biswas said — for example, by eliminating rare minerals from electric motors or replacing copper wiring with aluminum.

At the same time, the cost to make a gasoline car is rising because of stricter emissions regulations. “At some point it will be easier to just move toward E.V.s,” Mr. Biswas said.

Competition is also intensifying. Toyota and other Japanese carmakers with a reputation for delivering reliable and affordable vehicles are belatedly offering electric vehicles. Honda plans to begin producing them at an Ohio factory next year.

There will be more than 100 fully electric models for sale in the United States by next year, according to Cars.com, an online sales platform, double the number available last year. “We’re at the point now where anybody that wants an E.V. for a price point can actually get an E.V.,” said Rebecca Lindland, senior director of industry data at Cars Commerce, which operates Cars.com.

Used car prices are arguably more important than prices of new cars. Most people buy used cars. A vibrant used market vastly increases the number of people who can consider an electric vehicle.

Models from Tesla, Nissan or G.M. have been on the road for three years or more, generating inventory for dealers as the original owners buy new ones. More than half of the used electric vehicles on the market sell for less than $30,000, according to Recurrent, a research firm that focuses on the used E.V. market.

Jesse Lore, owner of Green Wave Electric Vehicles in North Hampton, N.H., recently sold a used Chevy Bolt for $15,000. After applying a federal tax credit for used electric vehicles, the price was $11,000. Besides the lure of affordable prices, he noted, his customers like that electric vehicles are quieter than gasoline models, better for the environment, and faster because an electric motor generates instant torque.

“The car is more fun than whatever they’re driving now,” Mr. Lore said.

Thinking of leasing a Toyota Camry?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $2,287 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $63 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive & Performance 6.8 /10

The 2024 Toyota Camry performs admirably for a family sedan. Steering is accurate, nicely weighted and predictable, which makes the Toyota an easy daily driver. Handling is composed, but we wouldn't call it sporty. The Camry's ride quality is smooth, which will please driver and passengers alike, especially on long hauls. Brake performance is good overall: The Camry provides light and easy brake pedal modulation and quick, secure stops.

The Camry is available with two engines. The base version is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 203 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque, and you can opt for a 3.5-liter V6 with 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Both variants come with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is available on all models except for the TRD. Both of the Camry's engines provide adequate get-up-and-go for most driving situations. The base four-cylinder isn't especially quick, but it pulls the Toyota off the line from a standstill quickly enough and allows for drama-free passing and merging on the freeway. The engine can get a little noisy at high revs, but that's the only big complaint. The optional V6 is markedly more muscular and injects a welcome bit of sportiness into the Camry. Both engines come with a smooth and quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy 10.0 /10

The 2024 Camry gets good fuel economy estimates for the midsize car class . Models with the base four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive get an EPA-estimated 27 to 28 mpg in the city and 38 to 39 mpg on the highway, and versions with all-wheel drive get 25/34 mpg city/highway. V6-powered models earn 22 mpg in the city and 31 to 33 mpg on the highway.

Interior 7.3 /10

The 2024 Camry has a solidly built and attractive interior, though it doesn't feel as fresh as what you'll find in some of its newer rivals. There are also some visible hard plastics scattered about, but this is pretty common for the segment. Upper-trim models can feel positively upmarket and comparable to an entry-level luxury sedan. The Camry seats five people. The front row is spacious and comfortable, and the seats provide a nice balance of cushioning and support. Visibility is good all around, as well. The back seats can accommodate two adults with minimal fuss, though three people could be a squeeze. The Toyota's low roofline might make tall occupants feel cramped, but second-row legroom is pretty good for the class.

The Camry falls short of segment rivals when it comes to cargo space. Its trunk provides 15.1 cubic feet of room, which is below average for a midsize car . That said, it can easily haul a pair of large suitcases or a sizable load of groceries. The trunk also has a low lift height, which makes loading and unloading heavy items less of a chore.

Value 8.9 /10

The 2024 Toyota Camry has a below-average value rating for the midsize car class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.6 /10

The 2024 Camry gets mostly good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Camry comes standard with a decent number of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. There's also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat, and you can borrow lower anchors from either outboard seat when they're not in use. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good+. The "+" indicates that it's among the easiest and most versatile to use.

Quality and Reliability 88.0 /100

The 2024 Toyota Camry has a predicted reliability score of 88 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 7.6 /10

The 2024 Toyota Camry receives a critics' rating that is average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

How Much Is a 2024 Toyota Camry?

The 2024 Toyota Camry starts at $26,420 for the base LE model, which comes with equipment like a power-adjustable driver's seat and adaptive cruise control. The SE (base MSRP: $27,960) gains features such as synthetic leather upholstery and sportier styling, while the XLE (base MSRP: $31,170) gets amenities like leather upholstery and a larger touch screen. The XSE is priced from $31,720. This model retains the XLE's features and also gets the SE's more aggressive-looking exterior. The TRD trim starts at $33,485 and comes standard with a V6 engine and larger brakes, among other sport-focused features.

Which Is the Best Toyota Camry Model to Buy?

We recommend stepping up to the upmarket XLE model. Although this trim is markedly pricier than the base LE, we think the extra cash required is justified. In addition to the LE's solid set of standard features, the XLE comes with niceties such as leather upholstery, heated front seats, wireless device charging, a larger touch screen and blind-spot monitoring.

U.S. News Expert Review

top model safari car price

Despite buyer preferences shifting to SUVs, midsize cars are still popular in America’s automotive marketplace. Long a strong seller, today’s eighth-generation Toyota Camry deserves a look if you’re in the market for a midsize sedan. I’ve driven several models of the current-generation Camry, and while I’m generally impressed, I think there’s room for improvement in a few areas. Designed more to satisfy than delight, the Camry does just about everything well, with few weaknesses to be found. The Toyota sedan’s archrival is the Honda Accord , which was recently redesigned and is, in my opinion, the best Accord yet. Oft-overlooked are the Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata — both excellent vehicles with far better warranty coverage than the Toyota. This model year marks the current-gen Camry's final year, and the next-generation Camry has already made its debut.

What We Like

Compared to previous Camrys, the current model has a more dynamic, almost sporty look, taking on a lower, longer and wider stance than ever. The look hides its rather basic sedan layout, like putting sprinkles on vanilla ice cream. I find the Camry’s cabin comfortable in both rows, though I wouldn’t try to put three adults across the back seat, and the rear headroom is compromised a bit by the sedan’s low roofline. I feel the Camry is a good car for shoppers trying to avoid the complexity found in many new vehicles. Yes, there’s an infotainment touch screen, but there are also easy-to-use physical controls for many vehicle functions. Toyota pioneered the idea that advanced driver-assistance and safety technology should be standard, and they still equip the Camry with a host of standard features.

What We Don’t Like

The Camry’s cabin is starting to get the dated feel that many cars get late in their product cycles. Its mix of lateral and curvy design feels stale, especially in lower trims with their multitude of hard plastic materials. The standard 7-inch infotainment screen isn’t as crisp as newer models and is small by today’s standards, though a better 9-inch system is available. One new bit of technology that Toyota touts as a safety feature is Curve Speed Management, which slows the car as you approach a corner. However, it’s far too aggressive and unpredictable, especially when you’re on the freeway. It’s so annoying that I feel many drivers will just shut it off and won’t have any benefit when it would be helpful.

How It Drove

While it’s not a powerhouse when fitted with its base engine, there’s nothing to complain about the Camry for daily driving. Sure, it makes a racket when you romp on the gas pedal, but that’s expected of most four-cylinder vehicles. It is paired with an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission, which feels more refined than the continuously variable transmissions found in some rivals. Four-cylinder Camrys are available with all-wheel drive, making them an excellent all-season alternative to the Subaru Legacy . I think the Camry’s ride is composed and predictable, making it a superb highway cruiser. However, the Camry I like the most is the least Camry-like model in the lineup. The sporty Camry TRD simply doesn’t make sense on paper, but it’s a whole lot of fun to drive. It features a 301-horsepower V6 and significant suspension upgrades, turning the car into a quick, yet stealthy, road warrior. If you want a V6 Camry, though, you need to buy one now, as the 2025 model won’t have the option.

Is the 2024 Toyota Camry a Good Car?

Yes, the 2024 Camry is a very good car. It has two sufficiently powerful engine options, a well-built interior, lots of standard features and agreeable ride-and-handling dynamics. It also comes with an easy-to-operate infotainment system. This Toyota's cabin can become noisy at high speeds, however, and its trunk is on the small side.

All told, the Camry is a well-rounded and sensible choice in the midsize car class. It's well worth considering if you need a solidly built car and don't care much about athleticism. The Honda Accord is a good alternative if you want a more fun-to-drive car, and the Accord also comes with a more upscale interior, more cargo space and a similar set of standard features. It does have a notably higher base MSRP than the Toyota, however. The Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata both have lower starting prices than the Camry and come jam-packed with standard features. They also provide solid gas mileage and smooth rides. Like the Camry, neither are especially entertaining to drive, and the Sonata feels particularly dull behind the wheel.

2024 Toyota Camry Versus the Competition

Toyota camry vs. honda accord.

The Honda Accord is the Camry's perennial rival in the midsize car segment , and both sedans have their pros and cons. The Accord has a higher base MSRP than the Camry, but it also provides more engaging handling dynamics, a nicer interior, more rear-row legroom and a larger trunk. On the other hand, the Toyota is available with all-wheel drive and a V6 engine, neither of which are offered on the Toyota. Both also come standard with plenty of driver-assistance features. The Camry and Accord are both capable and comfortable, but the Honda is the better overall vehicle.

Compare the Camry and Accord »

Toyota Camry vs. Kia K5

The Kia K5 is a relatively new vehicle in the class, but it gives the Camry a run for its money. The sleek Kia comes with a fresher-looking interior, more cargo room and a few more standard features than the Toyota. Like the Camry, it also provides a smooth ride and an easy-to-use infotainment system. That said, the K5 is a bit short on second-row headroom, and the optional upgraded infotainment system isn't as intuitive as the standard setup. Overall, both the K5 and Camry are very good sedans. Your choice will likely come down to personal preference.

U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years of combined experience in the auto industry.

This 2024 Camry review combines 37 professional reviews with concrete data like performance specs, fuel economy estimates and safety ratings and incorporates applicable research for all models in this generation, which launched for 2018. Check out excerpts from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

"Thanks to strong fuel economy, a comfortable interior and good value, the Toyota Camry is one of our higher-ranked midsize sedans. It's an easy go-to choice."

"Midsize sedans were once seen as rather vanilla, but as an alternative to the ubiquitous SUV, cars like the Toyota Camry can be comparatively responsive, nimble and satisfying to drive. They’re also comfortable, efficient, and remain spacious enough to suit most of the driving population."

"Spacious and safe, the Camry delivers on family-sedan basics. When it comes to interior materials and the driving experience, however, it can't compare to class leaders."
