It takes passengers on all-inclusive tours to some of the most popular destinations in India, with particular emphasis on holy places. Train Features

However, 3AC carriages have now been introduced on some train tours as well. There's a pantry car for on-board catering. What's Included

The price includes train travel, lodge or dormitory accommodations on a multi-sharing basis (it's often possible to pay extra for a hotel) at places where there are overnight stays, vegetarian meals, tourist buses for visiting sightseeing spots, tour guides, and train security guards. Entrance fees for attractions are additional.

Passengers must carry their own bedding.

Is Travel on the Bharat Darshan Suitable for You?

The answer to this question will depend on your individual comfort zone!

There are a number of drawbacks to the Bharat Darshan train that travelers should be aware of. The tours can get very tiring as the itineraries are hectic. They are not leisurely tours! Passengers are taken to different places every day and there is little opportunity for rest. What's more, the tours aren't always well-organized or managed, and delays can be encountered.

The focus of the tours is on visiting temples at each destination, which may become monotonous for anyone who's interested in sightseeing more than going on a religious pilgrimage.

It can get hot and uncomfortable inside the train, as there is no air-conditioning in Sleeper Class. Sleeper Class also offers little privacy and the toilets are often dirty.

While some overnight stays are included on the tours, long stretches can be spent traveling on the train. However, if you don't mind budget travel and are quite adaptable, it's an easy way of seeing India.

How to Book Your Tickets

You can find out more information about the tours and make a reservation for travel on the Bharat Darshan by visiting the Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation's rail tourism website, or at Indian Railways Tourist Facilitation Center at New Delhi Railway Station, Zonal Offices, and Regional Offices.

Fighting Overtourism: Madhya Pradesh Looks to Introduce Tourist Registration System — India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 27th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Religious travel is a significant aspect of tourism in India. However, overcrowding at key religious destinations often leads to potential dangerous situations such as stampedes. Uttarakhand has taken its first step to solve this issue, and Madhya Pradesh is now likely to follow.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

The central state of Madhya Pradesh could introduce a tourist registration system for its religious sites, including the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Skift has learnt from sources. The move aims to tackle the issue of overtourism and overcrowding at the state’s top tourist destinations.

The registration system is in line with Uttarakhand’s mandatory registration for pilgrimage to the temples of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, or Hemkund Sahib.

“We want to ensure that we cap the number of tourists according to our infrastructure capabilities, so that we can provide visitors with a good experience,” according to sources. However, this is still in the planning stage and the details are yet to be finalized.

Tourism Boom in Madhya Pradesh: The government of Madhya Pradesh last week revealed that it received over 112 million tourists in 2023, surpassing pre-Covid levels.

This was significantly higher than the 34.1 million visitors recorded in 2022, an increase of nearly 230%.

Places of religious significance are often visited by a lot of people, especially during festivals and religious events, leading to overcrowding and overtourism. This has led the state to explore measures such as mandatory registration of tourists for these destinations, sources added.

Religious Travel and Its Impact: Nearly 50% of the tourists that visited the state last year visited Ujjain, mostly due to its religious significance. The second most-visited city in Madhya Pradesh was Maihar, another destination of religious importance. Omkareshwar was also a popular tourist destination with nearly 3.5 million pilgrims visiting the city.

Places of religious travel in India witness significant pilgrimage. In the first two months after the revamp of Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya and the opening of a controversial Hindu temple , the city witnessed over 11 million tourists. A report by brokerage firm Jeffries estimates that the city could attract over 50 million visitors annually.

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh received an upgrade with the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor in December 2021. Post that, in 2022 and 2023, a cumulative 130 million tourists visited the pilgrim town, Skift earlier reported .

Data released by India’s ministry of tourism showed that in 2022, over 1.4 billion tourists visited religious sites across the country. Moreover, places of religious tourism earned INR 1340 billion (over $16 billion) during the year.

MakeMyTrip Introduces New Features for Train Bookings

India’s largest online travel company MakeMyTrip has introduced new features for passengers booking their train journeys using the platform.

Seat Lock Feature: This feature aims to allow passengers to secure a confirmed ticket by paying a quarter of the fee at the time of booking, with the remaining payable up to 24 hours before the journey. This, the company said, would allow passengers with unsure plans to have an assured ticket in case they decide to travel.

Connected Travel: This helps travelers combine bus and train journeys and provides multiple combinations while considering layover time and overall travel duration to present the customer with various options. Confirmed tickets are not always available on direct trains or trains of choice for the preferred date of travel, MakeMyTrip said this feature offers more options to travelers.

Apart from these the other new features are: Route Extension Assistance, Nearby Stations Recommendations, Free Cancellation, Food in Train, and Train Tracking and Platform Locator.

Co-Founder and Group CEO Rajesh Magow said the new features serve the entire thread of train travel — from planning and identifying the right train, to the actual purchase experience and all the way through to pre-arrival stages.

Cygnett Hotels to Open 15 Hotels Over Next Year

Cygnett Hotels and Resorts is set to open 15 hotels comprising 1,200 keys over the next year, the company revealed during its annual meet. Currently, the company has 10 properties under development and in the pre-opening stage.

In the next three months, the group will be opening new hotels in Sonipat (near Delhi), Mahad in Maharashtra, and Jaipur. The company cited a report released by HVS, saying that it was ranked second in new hotel signings in 2023.

At present, Cygnett has about 20 operational properties across India and Nepal, and plans to increase this number to 33 by the end of 2024. It is especially looking at northern and northeastern regions in India to expand its presence.

55% Surge in Bus Ticket Demands in Delhi

There has been a 55% increase in the demand for bus tickets in Delhi, according to online bus ticketing platform redBus. This is in line with the summer vacations in the Indian capital city.

In order to cater to the increased demand, private bus operators are running more than 1,400 daily services from Delhi, the company said.

Nearby destinations such as Manali, Kasol, Shimla, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Nainital, and Agra are witnessing the most significant demand for bus travel this summer.

“The data underscores the critical necessity of bus travel to meet the increased demand during this important period and the growing trend of Indians indulging in leisure travel,” said redBus CEO Prakash Sangam.

'Limit travel', Central Railway urges Mumbaikars amid 63-hour mega block — 10 key things to know

Infrastructure upgrade alert: The Central Railway has urged Mumbaikars to “limit travel" as it will operate a 63-hour mega block from May 30 at midnight for platform extension works on the Mumbai network. This will likely affect the services of local trains and the work schedule of lakhs of commuters.

The mega block will be operated for platform extension and widening works at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai and the Thane station.

The block for the works will end at 3.30 pm on Sunday, as per a Central Railway statement.

“We strive to minimize cancellations and request passengers to limit travel, emphasizing the necessity of travelling only when it is truly unavoidable," the Central Railway said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Here are 10 key points to know about the mega block:

  • Services of local and long-distance trains are expected to be affected during the block period. Therefore, the railways have appealed to commuters to avoid travelling by local trains, if not necessary.
  • "A 63-hour mega block for the widening of platform nos 5 and 6 (in Thane) will start from Thursday midnight while a 36-hour block for the works related to the extension of platform nos 10 and 11 (at CSMT) will kick in from Friday midnight," said Rajneesh Goyal, divisional railway manager of the Central Railway's Mumbai division. He said once the platform breadth is widened, facilities like escalators or wider staircases for Foot Over Bridge (FOB) can be provided.
  • Swapnil Nila, Central Railway chief public relations officer, said a total of 72 mail-express trains and 956 suburban trains on the main and Harbour corridors will remain cancelled from Friday to Sunday.

  • Several mail-express and suburban trains will be short-terminated and short-originated from Wadala, Dadar, Thane, Pune, Panvel and Nashik stations.
  • "There will be unavoidable cancellation of suburban trains. Hence, we request all the establishments to allow your staff to work from home or any other means possible to reduce the number of passengers on these days," Nila said.
  • He said the railways has requested the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to operate extra buses for the convenience of passengers.

  • At CSMT, the length of platform nos 10 and 11 has been extended to accommodate 24-coach trains from the earlier 16 coaches. While the extension-related work is already completed, the mega block will be operated mainly for carrying out non-interlocking (related to track changing points) works.
  • "These blocks are essential for infrastructure upgradation and long-term benefits. Passengers are requested to bear with the Railway administration for the inconvenience caused," the Central Railway said.
  • "Usually, it takes six months for the construction of a platform and, if done very fast, at least three months. That is not possible in Thane's case and hence we are using hollow pre-cast blocks," an official said.

  • In a release issued late Thursday evening, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport said it plans to run 254 extra services on nine routes with 43 extra buses during the mega-block period.
