Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival is heading back to Sepang International Circuit in celebration of its 10th year anniversary.

Among the major acts set to headline the festival are Grammy award-winning rock sensation The Strokes, English rock band The 1975 and Australian hitmaker The Kid Laroi.

Other international acts who will be performing include Sabrina Carpenter, Giveon, Alyph, Dermot Kennedy, Dhruv, DPR Ian, Gryffin, NxWorries, Peach Tree Rascals, Porter Robinson and Rini.

Apart from international talents, Good Vibes Festival 2023 will also feature a number of local artistes namely Airliftz, Blink, Emo Night KL, Forceparkbois, JAIE, Jovynn, Lunadira, Resort, and Talitha.

According to the organiser, Sepang is a significant venue as it’s where the very first Good Vibes Festival was held in 2013.

This year’s homegrown music festival will be held over the course of three days instead of the usual two-day weekend. The event will be held from 4pm to midnight on July 21, 22 and 23.

Tickets will go on sale from 11am on Feb 22 at www.goodvibesfestival.com .

General admission three-day passes are priced from RM788 to RM4,190 (bundle of five) whereas VIP three-day passes are priced at RM1,388. All prices are subject to a 3% ticketing fee.

In the hours after the cancellation of Malaysia's Good Vibes Festival due to the actions of The 1975 singer Matty Healy, many artists and fans have stepped up to help out those affected.

The latest act to do so is American rock band The Strokes who recently announced that they will be performing an additional show in Singapore on Aug 3 to accommodate Malaysian fans. As such, they will now be performing at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre for two nights: On Aug 2 and 3.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Strokes (@thestrokes)

The Last Nite hitmakers were previously scheduled to perform on the last day of the Good Vibes Festival in Malaysia.

Tickets for The Strokes' additional Singapore show will go on sale at 4pm on Friday (Jul 28) via Marina Bay Sands' website  with prices starting at S$148. There will also be a VIP Experience package for an additional S$108 which gives fans an exclusive VIP poster, a limited-edition tour laminate and lanyard and access to a dedicated VIP merch bar and an express VIP queue at the bar/concession area.

In their announcement post, The Strokes said: "We know this isn’t perfect for our fans in Malaysia but it was the closest and most convenient location to put on a show in such a short time...Thanks for your patience while we work through all of the possible solutions and we look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it out to the show next week."

In a separate post on his personal Instagram page, lead vocalist Julian Casablancas added that they will be offering "mega discounts" for people traveling from Kuala Lumpur to "try and offset (and alleviate) the cost of travel".

The Strokes' upcoming Singapore shows will probably be the best way Malaysian fans can see the band up close as they will not be performing in Malaysia any time soon. In a press conference held on Thursday (Jul 27), Wan Alman, Director of Entertainment for Future Sound Asia revealed that "there were initial discussions with The Strokes to bring them back (to perform in Malaysia)". However, due to scheduling issues, this was impossible.

About The Strokes

The Strokes announce additional concert in Singapore after cancellation of Good Vibes Festival in Malaysia

"We tried [Kuala Lumpur first] but they are not ready for concerts in Malaysia yet – understandably," wrote Julian Casablancas on Instagram

The Strokes have announced a second concert in Singapore to cater to Malaysian fans after the cancellation of Good Vibes Festival last week .

The band’s frontman Julian Casablancas took to Instagram to announce the second show, which will take place on August 3 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

Tickets go on sale at 4pm SGT on Friday, July 28 and can be purchased here . Tickets will cost S$148 and $188.

An additional VIP package has also been announced for $108, which will give attendees access to a dedicated VIP merch counter and an express VIP queue at the bar/concession area. Also included are exclusive VIP posters and a limited edition tour laminate with special filters and a lanyard.

Casablancas wrote on Instagram: “We know it’s not the iDEAL (or even possible) for everyone, so forgive (&we tried KL 1st, but they are not ready for concert in Malaysia yet ~understandably) but the best we could do with such short notice to try and make it possible for die-hard fans to have some chance to come to our concert — & as our Singapore show (which is ~relatively close) is sold out – the Strokes will be adding a second Singapore show to try and accommodate folks in Malaysia best we could.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julian Casablancas (@minorbutmajor)

While ticket prices could not be reduced for Malaysian attendees, Casablancas confirmed that merchandise at the show will be heavily discounted for Malaysian fans to offset the cost of travel.

Casablancas wrote: “couldn’t do it with the tix, but we think w/ the Merch (which we control), for people traveling from KL we’re gonna offer meGa-discounts (with proof of residence/travel etc) to try and maybe offset/allieviate a bit of the cost of travel 🤷🏻‍♂️? sorry – we tried! (and took a lot of pushing🙏🏼)”.

The announcement comes after the cancellation of Good Vibes Festival in Malaysia, for which the band were meant to headline on July 23. It would have been their first show in the country.

The festival was cancelled following The 1975’s controversial headlining slot on Friday, July 21. During their set, The 1975’s Matty Healy  criticised  Malaysia’s government for their anti-LGBTQ laws . Healy – who was drinking onstage – also smashed a festival-owned drone and kissed bassist Ross MacDonald onstage, before announcing just seven songs into their set that they had been banned from Malaysia and had to leave.

The following day (July 22), the country’s communications minister announced that he had  ordered the rest of the festival cancelled .

After hearing that the festival had been cancelled, Julian Casablancas took to social media to share that The Strokes were working on a way to perform in Malaysia , and that they would let fans know as soon as possible.

Earlier today (July 27) during a press conference held by Arts, Live Festival and Events Association (ALIFE) and Good Vibes organiser Future Sound Asia, Future Sound’s founder Ben Law revealed that they had “initial discussions” with The Strokes to plan a standalone Malaysia show, but were unable to proceed due to scheduling issues.

Live reviews

The Strokes are unquestionably one of the best bands out there, and you can really tell that they have been influenced by The Doors. I love The Doors and so I love The Strokes.

Just like Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Strokes (Julian Casablancas) has an element of shyness to him. The band works together very well and they just look like they belong together: if you watch Fab Moretti (the drummer), he's always looking up and watching the other players really intensely. I really enjoy watching them play together and I love to see them live. They don’t talk to the audience much, and mainly just focus on playing, but they do make some contact with the audience. You can tell that their fans really love them and their concerts are always filled with good people.

Due to the fact that they are so popular they usually play for really large crowds, but if you are very lucky you can catch one of their smaller more intimate performances. I've only ever managed to see them with a large crowd, but I have to say it was still really fun. You get a much bigger atmosphere when there are more people; everyone is so excited, but Julian looks so cool and reserved in his leather coat and sunglasses.

Since I've been a fan of theirs (for more than 10 years), I really think that The Strokes are getting better over time and that is good because I want them to be around for a long time!

I was lucky enough to see the Strokes at Governor's Ball in 2014. It had been 3 years since legendary rock band The Strokes had played a show. They surprised New York with a pop up Governor's Ball pre-party show a week prior so it was their second show back after not touring their latest album. Either way, it felt just as special to be their first festival show in a while. I have never had a better concert experience than my Strokes show. Between exploding with "Barely Legal" and ending with "New York City Cops," all 5 albums were touched upon. Frontman Julian Casablancas is extremely confident in the best way possible. He interacted with the audience, sang every song perfectly and messed around with other bandmates during some songs. He even goofily covered Nikolai's eyes while dancing around stage. The fact that there were times when the crowd was singing guitar riffs louder than they were being played is a sign of an amazing show in my opinion. The crowd was on fire and it was obvious the Strokes fed off this energy in an amazing way.

If the Strokes come back for a real tour, do NOT miss out on the opportunity to see them; the show will be so good you'll get chills thinking about it even a month later.

It’s official: they’re back.

The Strokes played in Berlin their first show (in a venue) in Europe in 9 years with a solid combination of their 3 first records, one song from Come Down Machine and 2 new songs (The Adults are Talking and Bad Decisions).

They played with a great mood between them and we could see one of the best Casablancas, joking with the band and the crowd, even singing Last Nite jumping to the public.

I hope this is just the beginning and they play in more venues than during last 14 years.

As someone who grew up listening to The Strokes and holding this band in high regard, it kills me to say that this show was a major disappointment.

Nobody could hear Julian's vocals. I'm not sure if the instruments were too loud or if Julian's mic was indeed too loud, but the fact of the matter is that you could not hear Julian at all.

Besides that, the band themselves sounded awesome and seeing Albert go off during Last Nite was simply awesome. Singing along with the whole crowd to classics like 12:51, Reptillia, and Hard to Explain felt like a dream.

The Floor GA tickets were not cheap and considering the major flaw that basically ruined the show, I can't say I would ever go out of my way to see The Strokes again if they toured nearby.

More than 1,300 people died during Hajj, many of them after walking in the scorching heat

CAIRO — More than 1,300 people died during  this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia  as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday.

Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel said that 83% of the 1,301 fatalities were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances in soaring temperatures to perform the Hajj rituals in and around the holy city of  Mecca .

Speaking with the state-owned Al Ekhbariya TV, the minister said 95 pilgrims were being treated in hospitals, some of whom were airlifted for treatment in the capital, Riyadh. He said the identification process was delayed because there were no identification documents with many of the dead pilgrims.

He said the dead were buried in Mecca, without giving a breakdown.

Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.

Saudi authorities cracked down on unauthorized pilgrims, expelling tens of thousands of people. But many, mostly Egyptians, managed to reach holy sites in and around Mecca, some on foot. Unlike authorized pilgrims, they had no hotels to return to to escape the scorching heat.

In a statement Saturday, Egypt’s government said the 16 travel agencies failed to provide adequate services for pilgrims. It said these agencies illegally facilitated the travel of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia using visas that don’t allow holders to travel to Mecca.

The government also said officials from the companies have been referred to the public prosecutor for investigation.

According to the state-owned Al-Ahram daily, some travel agencies and Hajj trip operators sold Saudi tourist visas to Egyptian Hajj hopefuls, violating Saudi regulations which require exclusive visas for pilgrims. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said.

The fatalities also included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. citizens were also reported dead.

The AP could not independently confirm the causes of death, but some countries like Jordan and Tunisia blamed the soaring heat. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj. Some vomited and collapsed.

Historically, deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, which has seen at times over 2 million people travel to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimage’s history has also seen deadly stampedes and epidemics.

But this year’s tally was unusually high, suggesting exceptional circumstances.

In 2015 a stampede in Mina killed over 2,400 pilgrims , the deadliest incident ever to strike the pilgrimage, according to an AP count. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede.  A separate crane collapse at Mecca’s Grand Mosque  earlier the same year killed 111.

The second-deadliest incident at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 people.

Image: TOPSHOT-SAUDI-RELIGION-ISLAM-HAJJ

During this year’s Hajj period, daily high temperatures ranged between 117 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit (46 to 49 degrees Celsius) in Mecca and sacred sites in and around the city, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some people fainted while trying to perform the  symbolic stoning of the devil .

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures for those attending the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer number of participants makes it difficult to ensure their safety.

Climate change could make the risk even greater. A 2019 study by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that even if the world succeeds in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, the Hajj would be held in temperatures exceeding an “extreme danger threshold” from 2047 to 2052, and from 2079 to 2086.

Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the Hajj comes around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will occur in April, and for several years after that it will fall in the winter, when temperatures are milder.

Here are the updated results from the 2024 Memorial Health Championship at Panther Creek

Friday's results.

Ryan Gerard nearly matched Thursday’s career low round to extend his lead to four strokes in the second round of the Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS on Friday.

The University of North Carolina alum moved to 17-under-par following a bogey-free round. That included an eagle on the par-5 No. 16 for a second straight day.

His 9-under on Thursday was just two strokes shy of the tournament record for a single round set by Rob Oppenheim in 2022. Gerard is currently projected No. 3 in the Korn Ferry Tour standings.

Steven Fisk and Max McGreevy, both projected inside the top 10, are among four golfers tied at 13-under.

University of Illinois alums Dylan Meyer and Jackson Buchanan are tied at 10-under. Meyer came up a stroke shy of the tournament record after going even-par on Thursday. Fellow Illinois golfer Brian Campbell missed the cut by two strokes at 4-under.

The tournament resumes with the third round on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
