Doctor Orders Chaka Khan to Cancel Four Concert Dates in June

As reported on The Industry Cosign , famed vocalist, Chaka Khan, by doctor’s orders, has cancelled several upcoming concerts. Although Khan has cancelled the shows, she will definitely be in attendance at the Apollo Spring Gala, which is honoring her on Monday, June 10, at the Apollo Theater in New York.

She is being inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame at its 8th Annual Spring Gala Benefit where Erykah Badu will present Khan with the Apollo’s highest honor. In addition, the program will include special tribute performances by Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige and Deborah Cox.

“Due to her doctor’s orders, it’s best that we move the date to give her the proper and adequate time to promote and market the new album,” says Khan’s manager, Tammy McCrary of Chaka Khan Management and Enterprises. “We are looking forward to a great project and a very robust concert and tour schedule this fall.”

The cancelled shows include The Capital Jazz Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD (Saturday, June 8); the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, held outdoors in the downtown Cultural District in Pittsburg, PA (June 9); an appearance with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at Columbus Commons in Columbus, OH (June 14) and Joni: A Portrait in Song at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada (June 18 and 19).

Chaka Khan Says She ‘Will Not Do Another Tour’: ‘I Got This Rich-Ass Life’

“I’ll do dates, but it won’t look like a tour," the R&B icon told 'Rolling Stone' in a recent interview

“Ain’t Nobody” going to convince Chaka Khan to get back out on the road.

The Queen of Funk, 70, revealed in a new interview with Rolling Stone that she “will not do another tour” for the remainder of her career. While the music legend said that she doesn’t plan to retire from performing live — at least for the time being — she has had enough of traveling on a tour bus now that she has “this rich-ass life.”

“Some people, that’s all they have, you know?” Khan said of touring to the outlet. “I got this rich-ass life. I’ve got great-grandchildren I want to get to know better. So I will not do another tour.”

The R&B superstar continued, “I’ll do dates, but it won’t look like a tour. They’ll be far enough apart that I can have time to sleep in between.”

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

The “I’m Every Woman” singer also clarified why touring no longer suits her lifestyle. The star said, “Riding on a bus, pissing in a little bathroom, waking up in the morning and you’re five hours from your hotel where you can take a proper bath or shower and go to bed like a normal human being. And then you got a gig that night.”

“That’s friggin’ insane,” she added. “It was just insanity. It’s like being a truck driver and a performer. It’s lonely as all get-out.”

While the hitmaker (whose real name is Yvette Marie Stevens) may be retiring from playing shows over an extended period of time, she also discussed a potential full retirement from performing in the future. “Well, I might do that three or four times, like other bitches do,” she joked.

In 2023, Khan celebrated her 70th birthday and her 50th anniversary of being in the music industry with a handful of concerts. She’ll continue honoring the milestone next year — kicking off 2024 with a show in Los Angeles on Jan. 27, and then headlining a handful of festivals across the U.K. next summer.

Aside from celebrating her major music anniversary this past year, the “Through the Fire” artist was also among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ’s class of 2023 inductees .

Earlier this year, Khan reflected on her storied career , and how she doesn’t necessarily want to slow down any time soon, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight .

Khan said, "The thing is, if you have a calling or a dream, you're either going to realize it or you're going to crash and burn; kill yourself or kill somebody else or something, you know? You're gonna have to do it, it has to be done. Or you have to pick something else. Because the calling is just the calling. It's that simple. It's bigger than you. So, you have to do it. And if you don't, the post office is always hiring."

She jokingly added, “I've done everything but kick myself in the back of the head... I feel like I've done a great deal. I'm wondering, you know, what's next?"

Chaka Khan Cancels Tour Dates in June, Schedules Fall Album Release

Singersroom

Chaka Khan has been forced to cancel four tour dates in June due to her doctor's instructions. The legendary singer was directed to rest her vocal chords for several weeks before she can hit the stage for shows in July. The concert dates that she withdrew from are The Capital Jazz Festival, Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and Joni: A Portrait in Song.

During Black Music month, Khan will be inducted into the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame at its 8th Annual Spring Gala Benefit. Patti Labelle, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige and Deborah will honor Khan with a presentation and performance.

Khan also plans to release, The iKhan Project: Alive album, to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of her entertainment career. The multi-genre album is tentatively scheduled to be available for purchase in the fall.

It’s been a long wait for Chaka Khan fans, but the Queen of Funk is finally making her grand return! After months of anticipation, the singer just announced that she’ll be releasing a new album this fall and has canceled all tour dates in June. Her loyal followers have been eagerly awaiting news from the icon since she last released an album back in 2007.

Chaka Kahn needs no introduction: She’s one of music’s most influential artists with decades worth of hits such as “Ain’t Nobody” and “I Feel For You.” The 10-time Grammy award winning artist continues to create timeless classics that are beloved by generations of music lovers around the globe. Now, after more than ten years away from studio recording, Chaka Khan is ready to bring us something fresh and exciting later this year!

The anticipated new release will mark Chaka Khan’s first full length album since 2007. As part of the promotional build up leading to its launch date, Khan has cancelled all upcoming performances scheduled for June. Fans can look forward to hearing some brand new tunes soon enough though; we’ve heard rumors that there might even be a few singles dropping before then!

Overview Of Cancelled Tour Dates

It’s been a tough month for Chaka Khan fans. The iconic singer announced that she had to cancel her upcoming tour dates in June due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite the disappointing news, there is some good news on the horizon: She has scheduled an album release this fall.

The cancelled tour was set to take place across North America and Europe from May through July 2020. Unfortunately, venues have not yet reopened since they were shuttered due to Covid-19 restrictions last year. This means that many of these concerts cannot go ahead as planned; however, Khan hopes to reschedule them in 2021 if possible.

Khan will be releasing her new album later this year with an accompanying tour. Although further details are still being kept under wraps, it looks like we can look forward to some exciting music coming our way soon! We’ll just have to wait a bit longer before we can see the Queen of Funk back on stage again.

Details Of Upcoming Album Release

Khan has not released an album since her Grammy-nominated ‘Hello Happiness’ in 2019, so fans have been eager to hear what she has up her sleeve for this upcoming project. Luckily, the wait is almost over.

The new album will reportedly feature previously unreleased tracks as well as some of Khan’s classic hits from throughout her career. It promises to be a nostalgic journey through time that we can all enjoy together!

Although we don’t know when and how it will be released just yet, we are sure that the Queen of Funk won’t let us down with whatever she comes up with next. We’ll keep you updated on any news related to the release date and tour dates once they become available.

In conclusion, it’s clear that Chaka Khan has had to make some tough decisions about her upcoming tour dates and album release. Despite the cancellation of her June shows, she is still planning an exciting new album for this fall. She knows how much her fans have been looking forward to seeing her perform live again, and she wants them to know that there will be plenty more chances in the future when they can experience her incredible music together.

It’s inspiring to see a legendary artist like Chaka Khan continuing to create art despite all these setbacks. We are sure that she will bring us something truly special with this new project. It’s going to be well worth the wait! Everyone should keep their eyes open for news on what promises to be one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

Chaka Khan is known for pushing boundaries and creating groundbreaking music over four decades in the industry. With every new release, she proves time and time again why she remains one of the most influential artists ever. Her next album is sure to be no different – we just need a little patience until then!

Chaka Khan (born March 23, 1953) otherwise known as Yvette Marie Stevens is an American funk and soul singer/songwriter and Grammy winner, born in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

Raised into an artistic household, when Kjan was young her grandmother introduced her to jazz music and as a pre-teen started her own all-female singing group with her sister Taka named the Crystallites. Whilst still in high school the singer joined the Afro-Arts Theatre through which had the opportunity to tour with Motown star Mary Wells.

In 1967 Khan joined the Black Panther Party and worked on their breakfast program, during her membership she was given a name change by a African shaman to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi. Khan would perform with small groups around the Chicago, U.S., area including the group Lyfe, which featured her then boyfriend Hassan Khan whom she would later marry and change her stage name to Chaka Khan.

Another group Rufus spotted Khan in 1972 and asked her to replace their current singer, the band signed to ABC Records a year later. The 1973 self-titled album from the group had limited success despite a powerful cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Maybe Your Baby”. However, a year later in 1974 Stevie Wonder himself collaborated with the band on the song “Tell Me Something Good”, which he had written for Khan and the band broke out into the mainstream reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s subsequent albums “Rufusized”, “Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan”, “Ask Rufus”, “Street Player” and “Masterjame” all achieved platinum status and highlighted Khan’s vocal talents.

1978 brought Khan’s solo career and her debut album “Chaka” which achieved platinum status in the U.S. largely due to the success of the singer “I”m Every Woman”. Her follow-up album titled “Naughty” was released in 1980 on Warner Bros. Records and went gold with the help of disco single “Clouds”. Khan released a number of albums from 1980 onwards but it wasn’t until 1984’s sixth studio album titled “I Feel for You”, written by Prince, featuring a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder, and an introductory rap by Grandmaster Melle Mel, that the singer once again came to the forefront of the charts and hearts of people.

The singer has since released the albums “Destiny” (1986), “CK” (1988), “The Woman I Am” (1992), “Come 2 My House” (1999), “ClassiKhan” (2004) and “Funk This” (2007), has won no fewer than 10 Grammy Awards, two Soul Train Awards and has been inducted into the SoulMusic Hall of Fame.

Live reviews

Chicago born singer and songwriter Chaka Kahn is an American soul and funk singer. The multi Grammy winner has experienced an incredible musical career ranging several decades and has garnered an incredible amount of fans over the span of her career. The dedication and devoutness of her fans was clear when going to see her live: they turned up in full force to see the legend perform, some carrying home-made banner and painted signs hoping to get spotted by their idol. Fans ranged from the old to the young, with parents and children to couples and groups of old high school buddies who had reunited to see the queen perform live. Despite her age, Chaka Khan proved that she still had it in her and blew everyone away. She was charismatic and powerful on stage, her voice as brilliant as ever. She sang all the classics that everyone had come to hear as well as a few less known songs and some new ones thrown in. When she started singing ‘I’m Every Woman’ the arena went wild with cheers and everyone, from parents to OAPs, were wiggling their hips and belting along. The energy was fantastic and only got better with every hit, from ‘Ain’t Nobody’ to ‘I Feel For You’.

Dubbed 'The Queen of Funk', we owe many of the greatest soul records of the 70s and 80s to the legend that is Chaka Khan.

Despite being a Chaka fan for as long as I can remember as my parents played her music around the house as grew up, I was only blessed with the opportunity to see the queen live last year. And it was definitely worth the wait! We hopped aboard the soul train as Chaka sang us through the decades with huge hits such as "Ain't Nobody", "I Feel For You" and "I'm Every Woman".

With a career spanning four decades, you would think that she would be long gone from the world of touring. But to the delight of fans like myself, Chaka makes performing one of her top priorities so there are plenty of opportunities to experience a live show!

Her music is timeless and enjoyed by people of all ages, from those who were around at the height of the Funk/Soul movement in the 70s and 80s, to those of younger generations, like myself, who can still appreciate just how great it is. With ten Grammy Awards and 70 million record sales worldwide, her track record speaks for itself. Chaka Khan is one of the greats.

Yvette Marie Stevens better known by her stage name Chaka Khan enjoyed huge success with her disco/pop in the 80s and 90s. She has a handful of iconic hits and was often dubbed the queen of funk during her heyday. Although with an energetic and vibrant live show that incorporates the values of soul and funk, the nickname is very apt to this day.

Her gigs are always sell out as fans who have followed the singer since her beginning pack out as well as the new fans who simply adore the classics such as 'I'm Every Woman'. This particular track achieves huge cheers during a jazz heavy introduction and the crowd are ready to sing along with the beaming front woman. The instrumental influence of the show is fantastic as it feels like a classic jazz show as all the disco numbers have been laced with extra percussion and brass.

'I Feel You' sounds so wonderful in the venue and the saxophone notes resonate as Stevens' synonymous vocal does not appear to have faltered with age. A finale of 'Ain't Nobody' with that warm brass is a perfect send off to the true queen of funk.

Last night at the WARNER THEATRE in Washington, DC, Chaka Khan was in better form than she was for her summer concert at WOLF TRAP in Vienna, VA, proving to her beloved public that "age" is just a number! Right from the beginning Chaka Khan had the audience singing along with her on her age old hit, "This Is My Night". Even though she was late to this performance, Chaka Khan exhibited unusual politeness when she offered the audience an explanation for her tardiness ... her driver and his name! Chaka Khan's performance and singing were exhilarating, as they always are, and she gave a special tribute the late & great artist, PRINCE, as well as a playful stab at STEVIE WONDER; therefore, the audience had a joy filled evening. The only sad note to this performance and her summer performance at WOLF TRAP was that Chaka Khan has dropped the hit, "At Midnight" ... . LIVE LONG & PROSPER, Yvette Stevens!

The opening video grabbed my attention and pumped me up for Chaka's appearance on stage. Her opening vocals were awesome. After 30 minutes she left the stage with no explanation and was gone for about 20 minutes. The band carried on as the crowd got increasingly more restless. Many left the row I was sitting. Chaka returned at the end of a song. She sang two more songs and ended the concert. She may have performed between 35-40 minutes and the total performance was about an hour and 15 minutes. It was short and much of her performance was getting the audience and her backup singers to fill in the concert. It was disappointing. I traveled from upstate NY and stayed overnight. I would not recommend a Chaka Kahn concert. It appeared that she may not have been feeling well. I would have appreciated a more honest explanation for such a short performance.

WOW!! Queen Chaka was AMAZING!!

She looks happy, healthy and in total peace. The band and her back up singers complimented her to perfection. I am so proud that Chaka has enough wisdom as to not overwork her instrument, that being her voice. With closed eyes, I was awed at how much each of the ladies "replicated" her "sound".

Total symmetry.

I am also a fan of Ro James. I was excited to see his name on the venue. Very talented young man.

Peace, love and blessings to them all.

GO CHAKA! YOU ARE TRULY "EVERY WOMAN"

Chaka Khan gave an absolutely amazing show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. This was my first time experiencing Chaka live and the only thing was that the show wasn't two or three hours longer. She belted very good funk covering her early career with the band Rufus and some of her solo anthems. A great evening of ver um good music, amazing entertainers, top notch musicians and powerful energy from singer, band and crowd.

Definitely a can't miss.

We thought Chaka was great and her band, especially the drummer, was excellent. Fun to hear some of her old tunes, but the show was too short! She came on at 8:15, left the stage for about 10 minutes during the show, and we were out by 9:30. Our seats were great, but for us to come from CT to Staten Island three hours each way and $187 for two tickets was a little disappointing that she didn't perform longer.

chaka khan tour cancelled

Fair officials have been notified that Chaka Khan has cancelled her show at the Stanislaus County Fair which was set for tonight, Wednesday, July 13. It was announced on Feb. 4 that she was set to perform.

Representatives for Chaka Khan announced that she has entered an addiction rehabilitation and aftercare program which will cause her to postpone all dates scheduled for the month of July. Chaka has struggled with a dependence on prescription pain medications and has voluntarily entered the program to get healthy and stay that way.

“We are extremely disappointed Chaka Khan cancelled because we knew how much the community was looking forward to it, yet at the same time we wish her the best in her health and full recovery,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are very excited to announce that Jody Watley and Shalamar will be replacing her. They will bring a high energy performance that our guests will love.”

Jody Watley is one of music’s prominent visionaries and style icons brings a newly reloaded Shalamar with new members Nate Allen Smith and renowned choreographer/dancer and vocalist Rosero McCoy to the stage. She’s combining Shalamar songs as part of her new set-list inspired by her retro-futuristic new album Paradise, fusing the group’s patented sound (rich harmonies, soulful melodies, and funky moves) with her own iconic hits, making their shows more of an experience than a concert.

The 2016 Fair will feature a spectacular children’s area presented by Sky Trek Aviation. Also planned for 2016 are free celebrity concerts included with Fair admission, a total of three stages of live entertainment, upwards of 30,000 local exhibits and over 1,750 animals.

CHAKA KHAN: SINGER, SONGWRITER, ACTOR, PHILANTHROPIST AND ENTREPRENEUR

Chaka Khan is one of the world’s most gifted and celebrated music icons. A singer, songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist, Chaka has influenced generations of music creators during her four decades as an artist. A ten-time GRAMMY ® Award winner, she has the rare ability to sing in a number of musical genres, including R&B, pop, rock, gospel, country, world music and classical. She is revered by millions of fans as well as her peers for her timeless, unmatched vocal style and image. The late, great Miles Davis noted that Chaka “sings like my horn.” And none other than the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has said that Chaka “is a one-of-a-kind, premier vocalist.”

During her legendary career, Chaka has released 22 albums and racked up ten Number One songs on the Billboard charts, seven RIAA-certified gold singles and ten RIA-certified gold and platinum albums. Chaka’s recordings have resulted in more than 2,000 catalog song placements.

“I am so humbled by the love, support and gracious spirit of my fans worldwide and the continuous support my peers have shown over the years,” says Chaka. “Throughout my career, I have been through the fire a few times over and I’m still here as a living testament to God’s love and grace.”

Still at the height of her astounding vocal powers, Chaka Khan is creating new projects and earning new honors. Her latest single “Like Sugar” has earned high marks from tastemakers; the track is from her brand-new album-length project Hello Happiness , due in the first quarter of 2019. In addition, Chaka is making history once again, as she has been named Grand Marshal of the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade, making her not only the first African American Grand Marshal in the traditional New Year’s Day celebration’s 130-year history, but the first Grand Marshal to perform during the parade.

Beginnings:

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Chaka began singing in local groups as a teen before being invited to join the group Rufus. Her fiery vocals on the group’s debut album caught the attention of music icon Stevie Wonder, who penned her first smash hit with Rufus, “Tell Me Something Good” The single from the group’s 1974 platinum-selling album, Rags to Rufus , earned Chaka her first GRAMMY ® Award. With Chaka as the group’s dynamic lead singer, Rufus was soon selling out shows across the country and dominating the airwaves with such hits as “You Got the Love” “Once You Get Started,” “Sweet Thing,” “Everlasting Love,” “Do You Love What You Feel?” and “Ain’t Nobody,” which earned a second GRAMMY ® Award for the group. Together, Rufus and Chaka Khan racked up five RIAA-certified gold and platinum albums.

In 1978, Chaka blazed onto the music scene as a solo artist with the release of the smash hit “I’m Every Woman,” written by Ashford & Simpson. This enduring and iconic hit has been re-recorded numerous times, inspired by Chaka’s incredible original performance. Continuing her work with the late mega-producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler), her catalog grew with such hits as “Clouds,” “Papillon,” and “What ‘Cha Gonna Do For Me?” It was during this time that Chaka began pursuing her love of jazz. She and Mardin brilliantly re-worked the classic “Night in Tunisia” with the song’s originator, Dizzy Gillespie, on trumpet. Chaka also recorded an album of jazz standards titled Echoes of an Era , which featured jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White. Her crowning achievement in jazz was the GRAMMY ® Award-winning tune “Be Bop Medley” from the 1983 album Chaka Khan , which also won a GRAMMY ® for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

In 1984 Chaka Khan was catapulted to global superstardom with the release of her smash hit “I Feel For You.” Originally written and first performed by Prince, this chart-topping, GRAMMY ® -winning recording also made history as the first R&B song to feature a rap, which was performed by Grandmaster Melle Mel. Chaka also topped the charts with “This Is My Night” and the instant classic “Through The Fire.”

Chaka’s vocal intensity, soulfulness, and ability to work within different genres made artists in pop and rock take notice. Chaka lent her voice and production skills to two of the biggest hits of 1986, Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.” Both eventually earned GRAMMY ® Awards. She has since worked with a who’s who of artists, including Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Steve Winwood, Mary J. Blige, George Benson, Larry Graham, the London Symphony Orchestra and countless others, earning awards and accolades along the way. Her 2007 album project Funk This! , featuring collaborations with former bandmate Tony Maiden, Michael McDonald, and Mary J. Blige, earned two GRAMMY ® Awards for “Disrespectful” with Mary J. Blige and the album as a whole.

Other Noted Achievements:

Chaka Khan has received a steady stream of accolades for both her artistry and philanthropy. Her awards include the Soul Train Legend Award (2009), the BET Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), the GRAMMY ® Honors Award from the NARAS Chicago Chapter (2006) and the World Music Award Lifetime Achievement Award (2003). Previously nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame four times – twice as a solo artist and twice with Rufus – she has been nominated again as a 2019 inductee candidate.

In 2011, Chaka received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was honored with the United Negro College Fund’s An Evening of Stars Tribute with performances by Stevie Wonder, Fantasia, Ledisi, El Debarge, Faith Evans, Angie Stone, Ginuwine, Chaka’s brother Mark Stevens, and her daughter, Indira Khan, among others. In June 2012, she was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, alongside such music greats as Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, and others. In 2013, the City of Chicago honored her by designating July 28, 2013, as “Chaka Khan Day” and naming the street of her high school alma mater “Chaka Khan Way” after her.

Chaka shared her life’s recollections in the autobiography Through the Fire , was published by Rodale Books in 2003 and is currently being adapted into a screenplay. In 2004, Chaka received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. She has also performed in musical theater, debuting on London’s West End in “Mama I Want to Sing” in 1995; appearing in the Las Vegas production of “Signed, Sealed Delivered” in 2002; and taking over the role of Sofia in Broadway’s adaptation of “The Color Purple” in 2008.

Despite her busy schedule, Chaka has always made time to support and uplift her community. In 1999, inspired by her autistic nephew, Chaka established the Chaka Khan Foundation to raise awareness, provide resources, and explore treatments for children with autism in underserved communities. She later expanded the mission of the foundation to focus on women and children at risk. In July 2012, Chaka received the McDonald’s Corporation’s 365Black Award for her leadership of the Chaka Khan Foundation. The organization raised $1.4 million for autism awareness and research and, on behalf of the autism community, Chaka lobbied on Capitol Hill meeting with the Black and Hispanic Caucuses’ to reauthor the Combating Autism Act of 2006. As a result, the act was renewed and is slated to provide more than $3 billion for autism research and other services by 2019.

Chaka Khan is also an entrepreneur. In 2019 she will be gearing up to launch in collaboration with her long-term hair stylist and creative director, turned manager, George Robert Fuller, a full collection of Chaka Khan inspired wigs and hair pieces for the everyday, modern female consumer, powered by Indique Hair. Chaka’s latest body of work, Hello Happiness , a 7-track album executive produced by English production powerhouse Switch, was released on February 15th, 2019 under Diary Records/Island Records. The 10-time GRAMMY® Award-winner is looking forward to a celebration of a lifetime this year and beyond!

Feel for Chaka Khan. The acclaimed singer has been forced to cancel four upcoming concerts and delay her album because of exhausted vocal cords. Chaka Khan Enterprises announced the disappointing news on Thursday via press release.

“Due to her doctor's orders, it's best that we move the date to give her the proper and adequate time to promote and market the new album," Tammy McCrary, Khan's manager, said in a statement. “We are looking forward to a great project and a very robust concert and tour schedule this fall."

Khan's album, "The iKhan Project," is now set for release in the fall. Per the press release, the 60-year-old singer was forced to cancel her June appearances in Columbia, MD (June 8), Pittsburgh, Penn. (June 9), Columbus, OH (June 14) and Toronto, Canada (June 18 and 19).

One event Khan won't miss despite the required vocal rest is at the Apollo Spring Gala in New York on June 10 . Khan is being inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame that night; Erykah Badu is expected to present Khan with the honor.

Chaka Khan: Tiny Desk Concert

Mitra I. Arthur

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the ladies their flowers. We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women artists, from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths.

When the “Queen of Funk,” Chaka Khan , began to sing her hit “Sweet Thing” at the Tiny Desk, she seemed surprised at how the audience enthusiastically joined in. It’s just one example of how ingrained her work is in the fabric of music history. Since she emerged in the 1970s with the funk band Rufus, Khan has crafted a legacy that includes 22 albums, 10 Grammys, forays into jazz and theater and collaborations with Prince , Stevie Wonder , Joni Mitchell and Quincy Jones . Her 50 years in the music industry recently culminated in a long overdue 2023 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The moment guitarist Rob Bacon opened the set on the talk box, with bassist Melvin Davis and drummer Jay Williams laying down the beat, it was clear we were about to get a lesson in some naaaasty funk with “Tell Me Something Good.” If the way our in-office audience was jamming to “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me” and “Ain’t Nobody” is any indication, be prepared to watch this show in a location where you can comfortably groove. “Sweet Thing” showcased vocalist Tiffany Smith killing the most iconic (and most vocally difficult) moment in the song, something that has humbled many a singer.

And what better way to close out this Tiny Desk during a month celebrating the contributions of Black women in music than with the anthem that has empowered woman-identified audiences for decades: the Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson-penned “I’m Every Woman.” Throughout the set, I’m reminded that Khan’s unfathomably big and powerful voice is a glue that holds intergenerational music together.

SOUL diva Chaka Khan has cancelled her show at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester just hours before she was due to take the stage.

The Bridgewater Hall was left with the task of trying to alert concert-goers not to turn up at the venue.

A spokesman for Chaka Khan’s publicists in the UK said: “We found out about 11am today from her management that she had lost her voice. “She did a gig last night at the O2 Indigo in London, which is probably what led to her losing her voice.”

The soul legend has long kept a home in London, and was recuperating in the capital under the care of a doctor.

The Bridgewater Hall was directing ticket holders to the box office for details of refunds, but the 55-year old singer’s publicists said that the star is hoping to reschedule the gig for October. Chaka Khan – born Yvette Marie Stevens in Great Lakes, Illinois – has been an entertainer since the age of 11, singing with a series of groups before finding success in the 1970s with funk group Rufus. She went solo in 1978 and gave the world her career-defining hit I’m Every Woman. Funk This

Chaka Khan has been making music ever since, right through to 2007’s Funk This album, which earned her two Grammy awards.

She has had battles with drugs, plus long-standing problems with weight, but the drugs are now behind her, and she has latterly embraced Christianity.

There was little hint that Chaka’s mighty voice may be stilled when she took the stage at the O2 Indigo on Tuesday night. Fans sang along and the star turned in what one reviewer said was a “blistering vocal” on her big hit Ain’t Nobody.  The Bridgewater Hall has also tried to contact ticket holders by phone where possible to alert them that the Manchester gig was off.

“We are trying to secure a date for a rescheduled show and we will contact patrons by letter or e-mail with further details as soon as we have them,” said a spokesman for the venue. “In the event that the concert is rescheduled, all tickets will be transferred across to the rescheduled date.  Patrons who cannot make the revised date will have the face value of their tickets refunded.”
