Best Excursions & Tours in Fethiye

Fethiye is one of the most stunning, and thus most popular Turkish holiday and yachting centers. This gorgeous city is located in the Aegean region, on the site of what was once the largest city of ancient Lycia, called Telmessos.

The location of Fethiye is so convenient that the city is the it-spot for both history buffs and fans of modern vacationing. The ruins of the ancient city are still visible and interesting to visit, as well as those of the Hellenistic theatre situated by the main quay. The city also features excellent marina, and gorgeous beaches with warm, clear-blue waters. Fethiye is also very convenient if you want to experience some of the charms of Turkish inland villages and its legendary hospitality. Turkish county-side is also gorgeous, fringed with pine trees and melodic waterfalls.

Since the history, nature and modern life are so intertwined here, it is no surprise that this is the only city where you can see sarcophagus lying on the street. These sarcophaguses are pre-Roman, ancient Lycan relics, that become even more spectacular when they get illuminated with floodlights at night. Nightlife of Fethiye is also very vibrant and exciting. The city offers numerous entertainment spots for nightlife-scene fans. Fethiye’s international charm is undeniable, as the city manages to balance out so many different characteristics.

Tips from locals: What to do in Fethiye?

Fethiye area offers a wide range of activities. So whether you are staying in Oludeniz, Hisaronu, Calis Beach or Fethiye itself, you can participate in all of the fantastic adventures in the region.

Here’s a brief guide from locals to help you plan the ultimate holiday itinerary.

What’s the best way to entertain young children in Fethiye?

There is so much to keep children and adults occupied during your holiday. The only bother you’ll have to choose what to do.

Of course, a day around the pool is great, but what do you do when that starts to get boring?

There are two absolute ‘musts’ for a day out with the kids. The first is the Oludeniz boat trip . What could be better than a day at sea playing pirates dress up? With onboard entertainment, the kids will be kept happy while the adults can relax and enjoy the sunshine.

The second is, of course, the water park. Whilst this is a relatively small park, you will be happy with the compact size and the small distance between a surprisingly large amount of slides. It is a great day out with peace of mind for parents who want to watch their kids closely.

What do you suggest for large groups and/or families?

When travelling in a large group, keeping the whole part happy can sometimes be challenging. There are many activities, but the most ideal for larger groups is 12 islands boat trip to swim and sunbathe in total relaxation.

If you are a group of thrill seekers, you could try rafting . Depending on numbers, you could even find yourselves with a raft of just your group!

There is also the most popular choice of the Jeep safari, which encompasses just the right amount of sun, swimming, adrenalin and places of cultural interest that you are sure to keep everyone in the group happy!

What about the solo visitor to Fethiye?

The people in the Fethiye region are some of the most friendly in Turkey. You are not likely to feel alone when you say good morning to the locals you pass by at the beach or market.

If you are looking for like-minded travellers, you can join almost any excursion and make friends in no time. On the other hand, if you prefer a bit more solitude, you may opt for a horse ride .

Tandem paragliding adventure might be another activity where you soar the skies with only your pilot and the birds.

Whatever your preferences, you will be welcomed with open arms and embraced by the locals!

Is there anything to do in Fethiye in the winter?

Fethiye is a working town that continues to run even after the last tourists have returned home. You will likely find the streets of Hisaronu and Oludeniz much quieter in winter, but Fethiye and Calis are still very much open for business.

New Year fetes and parties are organised; these are worth visiting. Whilst many excursions cease for the winter, you will find that it is still possible to take to the skies paragliding, as well as a few others.

A visit to the market in Fethiye is a lovely afternoon out, and tours are organised to visit Pamukkale or Ephesus too.

Are there any activities suitable for couples in the Fethiye area?

Couples looking for romance can travel to the restaurant on Babadag Mountain for a dining experience . This is a great way to watch the sunset in a setting with the best views.

If you are looking for daytime activity, a private boat hire will set you up for a romantic sea trip. If all the romance is a thing of the past, you may like to participate in any of the activities recommended above for groups or solo travellers!

What is the best way to enjoy the nightlife?

If you want a clubbing experience, you should head into Hisaronu, a haven for several nightclubs attracting younger Turks and clubbers.

If you prefer a more peaceful evening, there are many restaurants and bars to choose from, whichever area you stay in.

Oludeniz has a slightly more relaxed pace and is a great place to watch the sunset.

If you want entertainment or an evening away from the usual bars and restaurants, consider a trip to the top of Baba Dag to watch the sun setting.

You may also attend a Turkish Night, where you will combine culture and fun in one fabulous evening!

Fethiye day trips

Fethiye day trips - Minister Tours has been organizing trips from Fethiye since 1999. During this time, we were able to win the respect and trust of regular customers who turn to us from year to year, and the positive reviews found on the Internet are just confirmation of these words. Our advantage is that we truly love our work and value absolutely each of our tourists. We ourselves, without intermediaries, develop programs, annually add new ones and improve existing ones. Our prices are among the lowest in the travel market. But the most important rule is we do not take any prepayment and always meet our clients halfway, and therefore traveling with us is safe and convenient.

Fethiye news and travel portal

Useful information about the city fethiye:.

The resort is located in the south of the Aegean coast, very close to the invisible line where the Mediterranean and Aegean seas merge, so it is not surprising that this excursion from Fethiye is very popular. The season starts in April and ends in November. The hot months are July and August, when the air temperature rises to + 33C, and the coldest February is -4C, while there are practically no frosts and snowfalls. The nearest air gate from the center is Dalaman Airport, 50 kilometers away. You can get there by regular buses Hawash, for $ 5, or pre-order a transfer, the cost of which will be cheaper than a taxi, and the journey will take no more than 45 minutes.

The first settlements on this territory were known as early as the 6th century BC. Then the city was named as Telmessos and was glorified by its seer, who predicted the birth and great life of Alexander the Great. In the 8th century it was renamed Anastasiopolis, and in the 9th century - in Makri. The port received its modern name in 1914, in memory of the deceased military pilot Fethi-Bey

Unfortunately, little is left of such a rich past - due to the proximity to the edges of tectonic plates on these lands, earthquakes were quite frequent, erasing everything in their path. There are not so many excursions in Fethiye and in most cases you can visit them on your own, making a promenade to the ancient Lycian tombs carved into the rocks. And from them, in a 30-minute walk, at the highest point are the fragments of a fortress, once erected by the Greeks, from here beautiful panoramic views open. Old Town introduces the colorful life of the people living here, here you can visit inexpensive cafes and enjoy local dishes, delicious coffee and it is profitable to buy yourself and your loved ones a souvenir as a keepsake. And the archaeological museum will be of interest to all lovers of antiquities.

What to do in Fethiye?

We will tell you what to do and where you can go from Fethiye in the first place:

  • Dalyan and Turtle Beach - a river cruise on a boat with blue crabs fishing and a visit to Iztuzu - a reserved beach, which was chosen by the huge sea turtles Caretta-Caretta, which are on the verge of extinction.
  • Rhodes - spend the whole day on the sunny island of Greece, walking along the narrow old streets where knights once lived, visit the Palace of the Masters and other ancient monuments. You can get there by ferry, the ticket costs an average of 45 €, you must have a passport with an open Schengen visa..
  • Saklikent Canyon is a 20 km long gorge that attracts extreme lovers from all over the world, but not everyone dares to conquer it completely. The height of the cliffs reaches 600 meters, and a seething mountain stream flows along the bottom. On the way there are waterfalls, stone heaps and caves.

Oludeniz is located 15 kilometers from Fethiye, in fact, this is its suburb. You can come by minibus-dolmushi, the fare to any end of the region is only 5 liras or 0.50€. It is here that you can find the best beaches, over which the blue flag flutters, with the softest sand and the purest water surface:

  • The Blue Lagoon is a well-known and often photographed bay.
  • Belcekiz is the main municipal sand and pebble beach, 1 km long.
  • The Valley of the Butterflies is a protected area far from civilization and infrastructure. There are no hotels here, but camping is officially allowed, which means you can put up a tent or rent a wooden house and spend the day in solitude and complete harmony with nature.
  • Kidrak - the entrance to it is paid, and therefore there are fewer tourists.

Oludeniz is called the mecca of world paragliding, professional athletes hold trainings and competitions here. Jumping in tandem with an experienced instructor is carried out from the top of Mount Babadag and this pleasure is available to everyone who wants to tickle their nerves and experience the unforgettable feeling of free floating in the sky.

ABOUT FETHIYE

Indescribable Beauty! Located along the south-western coast of Turkey, Fethiye lies on the Mediterranean seashore. Offering a perfect balance between a bustling resort town and a working Turkish town, Fethiye is the ideal base for exploring the surrounding coastline and countryside. Magnificently backdropped by the Taurus Mountain Range, Fethiye (historically known as Telmessos) boasts pristine turquoise blue waters, innumerable tiny picturesque coves, lush Mediterranean vegetation and clear blue skies throughout the summer. A visibly culture-rich town, the friendliness of the people and the fantastic cuisine astound all! You will find everything you need here, a wide range of shops, eateries, bars, and accommodation, as well as an excellent transportation system around town and to the surrounding sights.

The wide bay of Fethiye provides a natural port and harbor and is popular with yachtsmen from around the world. It is also the starting point of many cruises along the coast and to the surrounding islands. The busy marina is great for a picturesque walk in the evening, leading into Paspatur the 'old city'. The most colorful shopping and entertainment center of the town, the Paspatur Market offers late night shopping with many bars and restaurants to help keep your energy levels up.

Soaking in history, Telmessos (Fethiye) was a very prominent city dedicated to the god Apollo and was the center of prophecy. The ancient Lycian tombs, a Roman theatre and a medieval castle surrounding the town are the only existing monuments from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. As well the fascinating history in the area, there are many natural wonders to explore around Fethiye. Such as Butterfly Valley, Saklikent Gorge, and Oludeniz beach to name a few.

Fethiye has a typical Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. The temperature often rising above 30ºC (86ºF) in July and August. Showers are unlikely in the summer months, but the rainfall is quite high in winter. The sea temperature never drops under 16ºC, even in winter.

Fethiye is easily reached by road, from all points north, south, east, and west. Dalaman International Airport is only fifty kilometers from the town center, while Antalya Airport is a three-hour drive away. Turkey, in general, has a very effective transportation system, with numerous private bus companies providing connections between cities, dolmuses (minivans) providing transport for local trips and taxis are available.

A NATURAL PARADISE!

FETHIYE SIGHTS

HISTORICAL SIGHTS IN TOWN Anciently known as Telemessos, Fethiye was a very prominent city dedicated to the god Apollo and was the center of prophecy. Existing monuments from the Hellenistic and the Roman period bear witness to a city life that was rich and highly cultured. Ancient ruins include rock tombs, Lycian-type sarcophagi, a Roman theatre, and a medieval castle. Built high on the mountain slopes overlooking Fethiye Bay, the ancient tombs provide a magnificent backdrop to Fethiye. A short walk from the center of town, the tombs are easily accessible and are a great historic addition to a day spent wandering around the marina or the market. The largest of the tombs, the magnificent Amyntas' Tomb, is considered by many to be the symbol of Fethiye. Amyntas was believed to be the governor or the King of Telemessos during the Hellenistic period. Expect a number of stairs and a 5 YTL entrance fee to visit this tomb.

Walking through Fethiye, you will more than likely stumble across one of the few Lycian-type sarcophagi scattered throughout the town. The most noteworthy and beautiful of these sarcophagi is found near the government house. It bears reliefs depicting warriors.

The ancient castle stands on the place where the city was first founded. Its existing walls date back from the eleventh century. Rebuilt during the fifteenth century by the Knights of Rhodes, the castle was used as a naval base. The incredible views of Fethiye from the hill make up for the lack of general upkeep of the castle ruins and the short walk up the hill. At sunset there is no better place to enjoy a few drinks and watch quietly, as the city is bathed in a golden glow, the sky turns pink, outlining the islands lying in the bay and eventually the sparkle of the city lights below.   The Roman Theatre stands opposite the commercial harbor near the town center. Typically Roman in style, it was built during the second century on the ruins of a previously built Greek-style theatre. Excavated in 1993, the theatre is undergoing a Restoration Project.

CALIS Located roughly 5km from Fethiye town center and easy to reach via dolmus (minibus), ÇaliÅŸ beach stretches for many kilometers. This half sand, half pebbled beach lies opposite Sövalye Island and can offer superb views at sunset, with a cool evening breeze. ÇaliÅŸ is one of the prominent regions of accommodation and entertainment, with many hotels and restaurants lining the promenade. ÇaliÅŸ is also a fantastic kite-boarding spot, if you are keen to try this sport there is a school right on the beach.

KAYA KOYU - THE GHOST TOWN Kaya Koyu is an old Greek settlement, 13km from the city center. Kaya or Karmylassos was home to a sizeable Greek community until the 'population exchange treaty' was signed in 1923, between Turkey and Greece. After the exchange the Turks, coming from the Western Thrace to replace the Greeks who migrated to Rhodes, Crete and the outskirts of Athens, could not adjust to the physical conditions of the area and after a brief stay moved to the Northern Aegean areas. Hence, the appearance of a ghost town today. Incredibly, the remains of around three thousand deserted buildings, including houses, shops, churches, and schools are scattered across the hillside.  Directly translated Kaya Koyu means "rock town", which is very fitting as the ruined village blends into the rocky hillside. Easily reachable by dolmus (minibus), running every 10 to 15 minutes from the Small Otogar (bus station) in Fethiye, they will drop you at the main gate to Kaya Koyu. This dolmus ride will cost you 3YTL. From there you can enjoy a walk through the deserted village and if you are feeling energetic there is a magnificent hike (roughly 2 hours) over the mountain to the beautiful lagoon of Oludeniz. On the plains surrounding the "ghost town" is a Turkish village, where there are many charming cafes and fantastic restaurants.

OLUDENIZ A bustling resort town, Ölüdeniz offers breathtaking beaches, with the beautiful backdrop of Babadag mountain, only 14km from Fethiye. On the UNESCO "World Heritage" site list due to its rich flora, Babadag mountain is one of the best paragliding spots in the world. Lying on the beach below, the tandem paragliders litter the sky with their bright colors and entertain with their impeccable landings! Oludeniz beach remains one of the most photographed beaches on the Mediterranean. The Oludeniz Lagoon and the Belcekiz Beach are known as "the blue paradise" all over the world due to their natural beauty. The Oludeniz Lagoon, also called Kumburnu, is a national park. For a small entrance fee (if you are a student and can produce identity, a discount is available), you can spend the day in the national park. Restaurants, cafes and toilet and shower facilities are all available. Belcekiz Beach is free of charge, however, expect to pay for the umbrellas and sun lounges. Oludeniz is easily accessible from Fethiye, from the small bus station, with just a short 20 minute dolmus ride (approximately 3 Ytl). The dolmuses are clearly marked 'Oludeniz' and leave every 15-20 minutes, the same applies for returning to Fethiye from Ölüdeniz.

HISARONU VILLAGE 5 minutes before Oludeniz, en route from Fethiye to Oludeniz, Hisaronu is the administrative, commercial and entertainment center of the Oludeniz area. The main street is lined with accommodation, restaurants and bars and is known as the 'party' town. It is however a very touristy town and therefore expect to pay more.

SAKLIKENT GORGE Saklikent (Hidden city) Gorge is an incomparable natural wonder. The second-largest (300m - deep; 20km - long) gorge in Europe and the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey, Saklikent Gorge is only a 40 minute drive from Fethiye. The magnificent appearance of the canyon is a result of thousands of years of erosion by the snowmelt of the Taurus Mountains. After April, 4km of the gorge is walkable, as the waters have receeded from the snowmelt. During the summer Saklikent Gorge is a haven for those wanting to avoid the midday heat, with its ice-cold water and cool rock walls. An excellent place to enjoy outdoor activities, including canyoning, hiking or rafting. A 3 YTL entrance fee applies. After walking up the gorge, for an extra 25 YTL, you can also tube down the river for forty-five minutes and bath in the natural mud baths along side the river. An experience well worth it!

Home > Türkiye > Fethiye Itinerary: Best things to do in one of the most popular towns in Turkey’s Turquoise Coast (map included)

Table of contents

In this post, you’ll find a Fethiye itinerary, including everything from some of Turkey’s best beaches to awe-inspiring national parks. All the tips you need to visit Fethiye and organise your own trip to one of the most popular destinations on the Turkish Riviera.

Turkey is an incredible country that has something for everyone. Places like Istanbul and Cappadocia are absolutely magnificent, but there’s also a certain magic to the Turkish Riviera and, in particular, Fethiye.

Fethiye Itinerary Blue Lagoon

Fethiye is one of the most popular destinations on the Turkish Riviera – an area known for its beautiful, pleasant beaches and particularly popular in the warmer months. However, don’t be fooled if you think that a Fethiye itinerary is just about beaches.

The Fethiye region is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Telmessos which was once one of the most important cities in ancient Lycia – a region of ancient Asia Minor. So, as you can already imagine, there is a vast historical heritage in Fethiye. And that’s what you can expect from this Fethiye itinerary: a combination of beautiful beaches, walks in nature, mysterious places and cute and lively old towns.

Fethiye Itinerary Old Town

In addition to the best things to do in Fethiye, in this article, you’ll also find other tips such as:

  • How to get to Fethiye
  • Best hotels in Fethiye
  • Best time to visit Fethiye
  • How many days in Fethiye

Where is Fethiye located?

Fethiye is a destination located on the Turkish Riviera and is part of the Muğla province, located in the southern region of Turkey by the Aegean Sea. It is a particularly popular destination in the warmer months, as it has beautiful landscapes, excellent beaches and, above all, very warm weather.

Fethiye Itinerary Kayaköy

So you can locate Fethiye on the map, this is the distance by car between Fethiye and some of the main tourist cities in Turkey:

  • Antalya: 198 km
  • Izmir: 335 km
  • Ankara: 616 km
  • Kayseri (Cappadocia): 762 km
  • Istanbul: 795 km

How to get to Fethiye?

The closest airport to Fethiye is Dalaman Airport. From Dalaman Airport to Fethiye is just 50 minutes by car (about 45 kilometres).

Some buses run between Dalaman Airport and Fethiye . However, I recommend renting a car to have more freedom when exploring Fethiye. In my case, as I was already on a road trip through Turkey and so, I had rented a car in another location.

Fethiye Itinerary Kaputaş Beach

Even if you’re travelling from other places in Turkey other than Dalaman Airport, several buses connect the different towns. I suggest checking out this website for more information on buses between Turkish cities or, alternatively, Rome2Rio .

Another interesting option is to fly to the island of Rhodes (Greece) and from there take a ferry to Fethiye. The ferry journey takes around 1.5 hours, and the availability of trips depends on the time of year. More information here .

Is Fethiye worth visiting?

Fethiye isn’t just about the beaches! It’s a very interesting destination in the heart of the Turkish Riviera with a lot of history to tell. It has incredible trails you can hike, charming historic centres, beaches that are just perfect for a dip on warmer days and even natural parks with fun hiking trails.

Fethiye Itinerary Saklıkent National Park

I know that many people who visit Turkey end up focussing more on destinations like Istanbul or Cappadocia . Many times, the Turkish Riviera is associated with all-inclusive beachfront hotels. However, the Turkish Riviera, and especially Fethiye, can be a very exciting and, I would even say, surprising destination. You can make it what you want it to be.

Personally, I enjoyed my visit to Fethiye and would therefore recommend this destination to any traveller who wants to taste a bit of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you want more tips on what to visit and how to organize the perfect itinerary on the Turkish Riviera, I suggest reading this post .

What is the best time of the year to visit Fethiye?

Fethiye has a Mediterranean climate, so summers are quite hot and winters are relatively pleasant. However, the best time to visit Fethiye depends on the places you want to visit in the region. For example, the summers can be excessively hot, but this is clearly the best season in Fethiye if you want to enjoy its beaches.

Fethiye Itinerary Amyntas Tombs

So I recommend visiting Fethiye from May to October . In my case, I was in Fethiye at the beginning of October and the temperatures were still high (without being too hot!) and I was even able to go to the beach several times!

How many days do you need to visit Fethiye?

In my opinion, 2 to 4 days is the ideal length of time to see Fethiye’s tourist attractions. In fact, at the end of the post, you’ll find a 2-day itinerary in Fethiye with the main sites I’m going to mention next.

Fethiye Itinerary Blue Lagoon

However, if you choose to do parts of the Lycian Way, discover more beaches or, for example, go paragliding over the Blue Lagoon, then you may need to add days to this itinerary.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you have more days available and would like to discover more of this incredible country, I suggest you read the post with my 12-day itinerary in Turkey or even this one on the 30 things you should know before travelling to Turkey .

💼 TRAVEL INSURANCE: Unexpected events happen anywhere in the world, so I always recommend getting travel insurance. I regularly use Heymondo , which offers some of the highest coverages on the market at very competitive prices. As well as covering medical expenses, Heymondo’s insurance also covers the loss or theft of luggage, electronic equipment and more. They also have a 24/7 customer service through their App. As A Ticket to Take Off reader, you get a 5% discount when purchasing Heymondo insurance . The purchase must be made using this link , and the price shown on the website already includes the discount.

Best places to stay in Fethiye

Since Fethiye is a popular destination in the summer, there’s a lot on offer when it comes to accommodation. In fact, it’s very common to find all-inclusive hotels in Fethiye when you search for accommodation there.

However, I confess that I’m more of a fan of other types of accommodation! In my case, I ended up staying in Ölüdeniz, near Fethiye. Although I found the accommodation I chose ( Olympos Hotel ) quite old-fashioned and the breakfast very poor, the room was clean and spacious. But for the price (20€/person per night), the truth is that I can’t complain too much 😁.

Accommodation Oludeniz

However, the good news is that there are many more interesting places to stay near Fethiye! Here are some suggestions for accommodation in Fethiye :

Activities & tours in Fethiye

Map of the best places to visit in fethiye.

Fethiye Itinerary: What to Visit

01 | visit fethiye’s town centre.

Fehiye’s Old Town is relatively small but quite interesting. Without a doubt, one of my favourite ways (and the one I recommend!) to visit this place is to walk through the streets of Fethiye without much of a destination in mind.

In the historic centre of Fethiye, you’ll find a few streets with shops, cafés and a few bars. Most of the streets are covered, making it an excellent option for escaping the heat, especially in the warmer months.

Fethiye Itinerary Old Town

The shops scattered around the historic centre sell a bit of everything, from jewellery to spices. This is also a great place to try some Turkish cuisine. For example, it was at Servet Fethiye that I tried lokum (commonly known as Turkish Delight) for the first time. The shop had lots of things and it was hard to choose what I wanted to try. But I loved the experience!

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you visit Fethiye on a Tuesday, make sure you take a look at the local Fethiye market .

02 | Admire the Amyntas tombs

Relatively close to Fethiye’s city centre, you can also visit the tombs of Amyntas. These rock tombs are carved into the rock and date back to ancient Lycian times. Although the tombs are large on the outside, their interior is rather small.

Fethiye Itinerary Amyntas Tombs

The visit is relatively quick, as the tombs can only be seen from the outside and there aren’t that many of them in this particular place. What’s more, this is one of the best viewpoints over the Fethiye region, including Fethiye Bay!

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: The ticket to visit the Amyntas rock costs 60 TRY (~1.8€), but is included in the Museum Pass . Honestly, since the tombs are visible from the street, I only think it’s worth visiting if you have the Museum Pass.

03 | Travelling back in time in the ghost town of Kayaköy

Did you know that you can visit an abandoned city near Fethiye? Personally, I always find these places very mysterious, which is why it was one of my favourite places on the Turkish Riviera . What’s more, it’s certainly one of the most unique things to do in Fethiye.

Kayaköy was evacuated in 1923 and since then the town’s houses and other buildings have been abandoned and only ruins remain.

Fethiye Itinerary Kayaköy

This city was home to mostly Greek Orthodox Christians, who coexisted with the rest of the country’s Muslim population. However, after the Greek-Turkish war in the early 1920s and following a treaty, there was an exchange of population between Greece and Turkey.

Access to the village is quite easy and can be found next to this restaurant .

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: There is a ticket office next to the entrance to the city and the ticket costs 60 TRY (~1.9€). As for parking, you can leave your car on the side of the road.

04 | Enjoy the calm and turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon

Without a doubt, one of the most popular spots in Fethiye is the Blue Lagoon. Located in Ölüdeniz, the Blue Lagoon is a long sandy beach and the perfect place for a few swims.

Fethiye Itinerary Blue Lagoon

Although this is one of the best-known beaches in Turkey and is considered by many to be the best beach in Fethiye, it is quite long, and so, I didn’t think it was too crowded (note: I visited at the beginning of October). This beach has good facilities, such as a few cafés and restaurants. There are also some water sports options to add some fun to this trip to the beach.

05 | Paragliding over the Blue Lagoon

Ölüdeniz is one of the most popular paragliding destinations in the world. So don’t be surprised when you get close to the Blue Lagoon and see hundreds of paragliders in the air.

Departures are made from Babadag Mountain, located at an altitude of 1960 metres. Seeing the ramp from which the flight takes off imposes a certain respect, I confess. In my case, I didn’t dare to try it. But the truth is that the views you get of the whole area and the Blue Lagoon look absolutely breathtaking.

Fethiye Itinerary Oludeniz Paragliding

If you’re one of the brave ones who dare to try paragliding over the Blue Lagoon, I suggest a few options for booking your flight :

One of the most popular options among tourists who do this experience is this 2-hour tour , which has excellent reviews and includes hotel pick-up.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you’re not flying over the Blue Lagoon, one of the best viewpoints over the Blue Lagoon is the Montana Seyir Tepesi . Although I haven’t been there in person (for lack of time), it looks like an incredible place from what I’ve seen online.

06 | Take the cable car up to Babadag mountain

For those who aren’t so fearless and don’t have the courage to go paragliding in Fethiye, I suggest a cable car ride to the top of Babagad mountain. This is where the paragliding flights depart from!

The cable car has four stops, but it’s from 1700 metres up that the views start to become more worthwhile. It starts at around 200 metres and then there are stations at 1200 metres, 1700 metres, 1800 metres and also at 1900 metres. There are restaurants with panoramic views at all the cable car stations.

Fethiye Itinerary Babadag

From 1700 metres, the ascent is made using a chair lift and not the cable car. Also, be aware that the opening hours of the cable car and chair lift vary according to the time of year and it even closes in some months. Check the Babadag cable car opening times in advance.

07 | Visit the uninhabited island of Gemiler

One of the most popular day trips from Fethiye is to visit the uninhabited island of Gemiler, located quite close to the Turkish coast. The island is small (1000 x 400 metres), but it has an interesting history. It is commonly known as the island of St Nicholas of Myra, as it is estimated that there was a tomb of this saint on this island.

Although the island is not currently inhabited, there are several ruins scattered around the island (namely several churches) that tell us stories of other times. This is an excellent addition to an itinerary in this part of the Turkish Riviera and one of the best things to do in Fethiye.

Although it’s an uninhabited island, it’s a very popular spot during the warmer months, as it’s a stopping point on many of the boat trips departing from Fethiye. So, without a doubt, one of the most convenient ways to visit the island of Gemiler is an organised tour with a stop on the island. For example, this full-day tour includes a stop at Gemiler Island as well as other popular sites in Fethiye, such as the Butterfly Valley.

Fethiye Itinerary Butterfly Valley

💡 EXTRA TIP: Although the Butterfly Valley features in most of Fethiye’s travel guides, I chose not to include it in this guide. The viewpoint from which you can see the valley is, in my opinion, quite dangerous to access. It also gets crowded very quickly. So I don’t recommend visiting this viewpoint. Alternatively, you can visit the valley on a boat trip . I didn’t get to try this option, but it might be more interesting.

However, if you like travelling at your own pace and don’t want to go on excursions, there are alternatives for getting to this island. There are water taxis from Gemiler Beach (in mainland Turkey). In addition, this option will allow you to spend more time on the island as most tours only stop there for a short time.

08 | Trail into the Saklıkent gorge

Just a 45-minute drive from the historic centre of Fethiye, you can visit one of the must-see places in Fethiye – Saklıkent National Park. In fact, this was one of my favourite places on my trip to Turkey .

Fethiye Itinerary Saklıkent National Park

In this park, you can walk along the Saklikent Gorge and the experience is incredible. The gorge is over 18 km long and 300 metres deep. However, you can’t walk the entire route.

💡 EXTRA TIP: At certain times of the year (usually from November to March), it may be impossible to visit this gorge due to the high water level.

The good thing about including this experience in your Fethiye itinerary is that you can walk only part of the gorge or be adventurous by taking a longer and more difficult route. For example, in my case, I chose to walk only about 2 kilometres (round trip). And even though I only walked a few kilometres of the gorge, I still had an unforgettable experience.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you don’t have a car when visiting Fethiye, I recommend this full-day tour which includes a visit to this natural park and lunch.

Fethiye Itinerary Saklıkent National Park

The water is quite cold (so cold that your bones ache!!), but the initial part where the water flow is stronger is the worst. From that point onwards, the volume of water decreases and it’s much easier to walk through the gorge. There is also a lot of mud along the way, which can lead to a few funny moments.

Some useful information for visiting Saklikent Gorge:

  • The car park costs 50 TRY (~ 1.6€)
  • Entry to the gorge costs 24 TRY (~ 0.77€)
  • If you don’t have your water shoes, you can hire them. I rented mine in the car park and it cost 60 TRY (1.9€). The quality was poor, but without them, you won’t be able to walk through the gorge.
  • There are helmets at the gorge’s entrance, but most people don’t use it. I confess I only saw them when I had finished the route.
  • There are some cafés with drinks and light meals near the gorge’s entrance

09 | Diving into the icy waters of the Gizlikent Şelalesi waterfall

Relatively close to the Saklikent Gorge, there is also an easily accessible waterfall. Although it’s not as impressive as walking along the gorge, the waterfall is majestic nonetheless.

To get there, you have to walk for about 1 km from the entrance, the last 300 metres of which are over water. As such, you also need waterproof shoes to make it all the way. Again, I ended up renting some more waterproof shoes for 40 TRY (~1.3€). There is also a staircase along the route, which is the hardest part on the way back (but perfectly doable 😉).

Fethiye Itinerary Gizlikent Şelalesi

The entrance to the area where the waterfall is located has a car park which costs 50 TRY (~ 1.6€). There is a whole supporting infrastructure where you’ll find souvenir shops and restaurants. This is also a popular spot for other activities such as zip-lining.

10 | Walk part of the Lycian Way

One of the best things to do in and around Fethiye is to hike part of the famous Lycian Way. My suggestion is to only walk part of this long-distance trail, as it is actually over 500 kilometres long. On average, it takes around 30 days to walk this trail.

Fethiye Itinerary Lycian Way

This trail runs mainly along the southern coast of Turkey, in what used to be Lycia. Most visitors choose to dedicate a day to a part of what is considered one of the most beautiful trails in the world or, in some cases, even a few days. For example, in this article you’ll find lots of information on what it’s like to walk this trail for a week.

11 | Enjoy the famous Kaputaş beach

While Blue Lagoon is often praised as one of the best beaches around Fethiye, there’s another beach that’s just as popular. It’s called Kaputaş and can be reached by taking some stairs near the beautiful road that runs along the coast of the Turkish Riviera .

Fethiye Itinerary Kaputaş Beach

The beach is really quite beautiful. However, it’s small and, given its popularity, it gets crowded very quickly. Not only is it difficult to find free space on the beach in the summer months, but parking can also become a nightmare. Even so, it can be interesting to stop by, if only to admire the beach.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you’d like to relax a little on the beaches of the Turkish coast while avoiding the hustle and bustle, try one of the following alternative beaches (Küçük Çakıl, Büyük Çakıl or Inceboğaz).

12 | Take a day trip to Kaş

Kaş is another of the most popular towns on the Turkish Riviera and is located about 1.5 hours by car from Fethiye, making it an interesting option for a day trip from Fethiye.

Fethiye Itinerary Kaş

The city is very lively (especially at night) and has a few souvenir shops where you can easily get lost. The centre isn’t very big and you can quickly wander around the main points of interest. In fact, one of the best ways to explore this city is to get lost in its historic centre.

Fethiye Itinerary Kaş

Other places you can also include in your visit are the market that takes place every Friday, Kaş Square and the Antiphellus Amphitheatre .

Finally, don’t miss out on one of the best views of the city at Kaş Panorama , even though it’s slightly further away from the historic centre.

13 | Visit the Tlos ruins

The list of things to do in Fethiye can continue to Tlos. This was one of the most important cities in ancient Lycia. Like many of the other ruins you can visit in Turkey , the ruins of Tlos are very well preserved and tell us stories of other times.

Fethiye Itinerary Tlos Ruins

Here too we can see some of the tombs so typical of the buildings of ancient Lycia. Many of these tombs were built directly into the mountains, as the population believed that there was a figure with wings that carried the dead to the afterlife.

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: The ruins of Tlos are open every day from 8.30 am to 6 pm and the ticket costs around 3€, which is included in the Museum Pass . All the most up-to-date information is available here .

14 | Visit some of the islands near Fethiye

There’s no denying that Fethiye is an especially popular destination in the warmer months: the beaches are beautiful and the sea is warm. So one of the most popular activities in Fethiye includes taking a boat trip around the main islands off this part of the Turkish coast.

There are several options available, but I particularly recommend these two tours:

Fethiye Itinerary – How to organize your visit

As I said at the beginning of the post, a trip to Fethiye can be as long as you want it to be. This is a very complete destination in Turkey… it suits beach lovers, nature lovers and history buffs as well.

However, in my opinion, a 2-day itinerary in Fethiye will allow you to visit the main points of interest in the region . This is how I’d organize my 2 days in Fethiye:

  • Day 1 : Ghost town of Kayaköy+ Fethiye Old Town + Amyntas Tombs + Blue Lagoon
  • Day 2 : Saklıkent National Park + Gizlikent Waterfall + Kaputaş Beach + Kaş Historical Centre

If you’re also keen to take one of the boat trips to the various islands around Fethiye or if you’re brave enough to go paragliding over the Blue Lagoon, then I suggest adding one or two days to this Fethiye itinerary. I don’t think you’ll regret it 😉!

Overview of 2 Days in Fethiye Itinerary

Here’s a glance at what you’ll see and do in two days in Fethiye:

Day 1 in Fethiye

Enjoy breakfast at kamkat cafe, lake köyceğiz, visit i̇ztuzu beach, grab lunch at turtle beach restaurant, amyntas rock tombs, eat dinner at middoor restorant cafe&bar, shop at the fethiye market in old town, day 2 in fethiye, enjoy breakfast at gogo the eatery, discover the ghost town of kayaköy, swim in the ölüdeniz blue lagoon, grab lunch at inci_restaurant, boat ride to butterfly valley , sunset paragliding experience, eat dinner at the pinehill alacarte restaurant.

Fethiye, southern end of the town and marina Turkey

Start your 48 hrs in Fethiye with breakfast at Kamkat Cafe , a relaxed restaurant near Fethiye’s Çalış Beach.

They have a covered outdoor terrace and serve a range of local Turkish and Mediterranean dishes as well as more classic breakfast dishes (bread, preserves, pastries, etc.) that you might be more used to back home.

Lake Koycegiz is 100 km up the coast from Fethiye but it’s totally worth travelling the distance. Plus, there are other things to do in this area that make the journey worthwhile.

Lake Koyegiz isn’t just a beautiful lake, but it also has natural mug baths, a sandy lake-side beach and beautiful views of the surrounding area.

You could also take a boat ride on the lake or simply stroll around the promenade if you don’t feel like getting wet (or getting muddy).

Panorama of mountain lake Koycegiz at sunset in Turkey

There are many great beaches in Fethiye but some are better than others. While Fethiye’s local beach Çalış is long and sandy with great waters for swimming in, Iztuzu Beach has something that it doesn’t: loggerhead turtles! Plus, it’s just a short distance away from Kale Koycegiz.

These turtles lay their eggs from May to October and access to the beach is usually prohibited during the night at this time to protect the eggs. Hatching season is from November to April.

Sun loungers on a famous Iztuzu beach in Turkey

While you’re at Iztuzu Beach, stay for lunch at the local beachside restaurant . It’s a relaxed seafood eatery with excellent reviews. You can either consume your catch in the restaurant or get your food to take away and eat on the beach.

Head back to Fethiye and discover one of the most important historical ruins in the town. The Anyntas Rock Tombs of Fethiye are similar to the Lycian Rock Tombs of Myra which are much further down the coast.

These rock tombs are much closer to Fethiye as they literally overlook the harbour so they’re in a much more convenient location at the end of the Fethiye Kordon hiking trail. Or you can take this day tour to see Anyntas Rock Tombs .

They are the remains of the Greek ancient city of Telmessos dating back to the 4th century BC. Like Petra in Jordan, they are hewn into the cliff face.

They are one of the ancient architectural wonders of Turkey and are well worth visiting up close. Not to mention the view of Fethiye from where the rock tombs are is spectacular.

Back in Fethiye, enjoy eating dinner at Middoor . It’s located right on the beach and has a relaxed, covered outdoor terrace overlooking the coastline. They serve a mix of local Turkish dishes and seafood.

Fethiye is a beach town that really comes alive at night. Take the opportunity on the first night of your 2-day itinerary for Fethiye to get lost in the winding cobbled streets of the Old Town. Stop by Fethiye Market to see if you can source any cool, local items or souvenirs to take home with you.

FETHIYE, TURKEY. A traditional Turkish carpet shop in fethiye, turkey,

Instead of eating right on the beach for breakfast on your second day in Fethiye, head into the heart of the Old Town and stop by Gogo The Eatery . This café has a cool vibe and serves artisanal coffee with western breakfasts like eggs benedict. They have a beautiful, upmarket outdoor terrace too.

Yesterday you explored the coastline west of Fethiye, today it’s time to explore the cool spots along the eastern coast. The first stop on your itinerary will be the ghost town of Kayakoy .

Kayakoy was first inhabited during the time of the Ancient Greeks and remained inhabited until the 20th century during the Greco-Turkish War. All Greek Orthodox residents (which was most, if not all of them) were exiled and therefore left the village abandoned.

It’s an incredible sight to see so many old houses left completely empty and it’s a must-see when staying in Fethiye.

abandoned and destroyed ghost town kayakoy in Turkey

After visiting Kayakoy, head further down the coast to the Oludeniz Blue Lagoon. Unlike the Blue Lagoon in Iceland , this is simply an area of coastline near Oludeniz that is an incredibly vibrant and vivid blue.

Part of the coastline is almost totally enclosed due to the shape of the beaches so this part, especially, is Oludeniz’s Blue Lagoon.

You can swim in it as the whole coastline is very clean and calm or you can just admire how blue and beautiful it looks! Visiting in summer is key because only then will you see the vibrancy of the water.

Before leaving the area, enjoy lunch at INCI Restaurant on Oludeniz Beach which is also near the Blue Lagoon. It’s in an easy-to-reach location and serves standard western food alongside seafood stews and Turkish dishes. It’s relaxed and the view is lovely.

There are several ways to reach the Butterfly Valley nature reserve, but the easiest is to take a ferry or water taxi from Olundeniz as it’s right on the coast. Otherwise, you’d have a long, arduous hike as there are no main roads that access this largely untouched area! Another option is joining this tour .

Hiking through Butterfly Valley will allow you to be completely surrounded by over 100 species of rare and diverse butterflies. Some of the rare species are the orange, black, and white Jersey Tiger varieties.

In total, the Butterfly valley is around 86,000 sqm. You’ll only be able to see a small fraction of that on your trip but you won’t regret making the effort.

Finish your 48 hours in Fethiye with a bang by braving one of the most popular adrenaline-inducing activities in the area: paragliding! It’s the best way to truly appreciate the vivid blues of the Blue Lagoon and the stunning Fethiye coastline.

There are lots of tandem paragliding companies by the beach so you’ll have no problems finding one with availability and great reviews.

Tours in Fethiye

Paragliding in ölüdeniz.

No Fethiye itinerary is complete without taking a tour, half-day, or full-day trip to somewhere in the local area.

There are just too many awesome things to see and experience! One of the top activities for travellers to do outside of Fethiye is to paraglide over Olundeniz .

The harbours, the nature reserves, the beaches… It’s just such a beautiful place! The weather allows for paragliding almost year-round and it’s much cheaper to paraglide here than in many other places around the world.

Scuba Diving Experience

Fethiye’s calm, clear turquoise waters (it is the Turquoise Coast, after all) make this a fantastic place for a diving experience if you’re a scuba diving newbie and want to try it out. This half-day tour will give you the perfect taster.

You’ll explore coral reefs, submerged caves, and lots of colourful fish on this at least two epic dives. Safety is paramount and lunch is also included.

Day Trip to Saklikent National Park

Turkey has 45 national parks and Saklikent National Park is only 45 km/28 miles or a 50-minute drive from Fethiye. It’s the perfect place for a half-day or full-day tour!

You can hike up the deep river Saklikent Gorge and visit the ancient Lycian city of Tlos near the national park.

How many days do you need in fethiye.

When deciding how many days in Fethiye you want to spend, you need to know what kind of trip you want. If you want a relaxing beach break, you might want to stay for a week.

However, if you’re looking for a fun coastal city break or are visiting Fethiye as part of a backpacking trip, you only need two full days in Fethiye. There are plenty of tours and excursions you can take around the local area if you’re spending three or four days, though.

Is it worth going to Fethiye?

It is absolutely worth going to Fethiye! Fethiye has so many historical and natural wonders that it offers something for all types of travellers. Plus, Fethiye is a cheaper alternative to other Turkish resort towns like Antalya.

Is it better to stay in Fethiye or Oludeniz?

Oludeniz is another small, coastal resort town in Turkey only 20 km/12.5 miles along the coast from Fethiye, which is only a 20-minute drive. Oludeniz is a more typical touristy beach resort town with more people, high-rise resort hotels and a busier beach. If you prefer a more typical beach resort town, Oludeniz.

However, most travellers would probably prefer staying in Fethiye. It’s less touristy but still has all the amenities you need and lots of gorgeous resorts and accommodation options to choose from. Plus, you can easily take a day trip to Oludeniz so by staying in Fethiye you will get to explore both Fethiye and Oludeniz.

In a nutshell, it’s better to stay in Fethiye than in Oludeniz!
