Taylor Swift Announces Opening Acts For Speak Now Tour

When it comes to opening acts for the North American leg of her Speak Now tour, Taylor Swift has compiled a nice list of eye candy, not to mention inspiration for her next album.

Frankie Ballard , Danny Gokey , Hunter Hayes , Josh Kelley , Randy Montana , James Wesley and Charlie Worsham will each play select dates on the tour (list below). As previously announced , Needtobreathe will appear on all North American stops, which kick off May 27 in Omaha, Neb.

"I'm so excited to go back out on tour again in 2011!" Taylor says . "The Fearless Tour was so much fun and even more unforgettable than I ever imagined, and I can't wait to get back out and play my new music from ' Speak Now !' The fans have been so amazing, and I'm thrilled to play in new cities around the world and meet even more of my fans in 2011!"

Joining the pack of relative country newcomers is 25-year-old independent artist Charlie Worsham, who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 12. Learn more about the multi-instrumentalist with a country-pop rock-bluegrass sound here .

It's an exciting week for Taylor, who topped the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart for the seventh time with 'Back to December,' her second consecutive No. 1 single from 'Speak Now.' In addition, Taylor's 2006 self-titled debut album was certified five-times platinum by the RIAA for sales exceeding five million units. Her 'Fearless' album is currently six-times platinum, while 'Speak Now' is triple platinum.

"I’m so excited to go back out on tour again in 2011! The 'Fearless Tour' was so much fun and even more unforgettable than I ever imagined, and I can't wait to get back out and play my new music from Speak Now! The fans have been so amazing and I'm thrilled to play in new cities around the world and meet even more of my fans in 2011!" [3]

While promoting her current album, Swift mentioned her excitement for her upcoming tour. She stated the tour was going to be "big" and "extensive". [4] On November 23, 2010, various media outlets—including Billboard Magazine announced the second tour by Swift. [5] It follows her successful Fearless Tour which played for over 100 dates in over five countries. The tour marked the singer's first tour to perform in stadiums. Before the tour commenced, Swift performed "The Allure of Taylor Swift" aboard the MS Allure of the Seas at the Allure of the Seas Aquatheater, as apart Royal Caribbean Cruises in January 2011. [6]

For fans lucky enough to have scored tickets during the Ticketmaster fiasco that left many empty-handed, we’ve compiled a list of what to know: how to get to the concert, rules at the venue, weather to expect and more.

And if you’re one of the countless Swifties who couldn’t get their hands on tickets, don’t worry, we have you covered, too. There are plenty of other events happening around the city this weekend to celebrate Swift mania.

Schedule of events

Noon: Merchandise sales open outside Soldier Field in four locations.

2 p.m.: On-site parking lots open. (All parking on site at Soldier Field is now sold out.)

4:30 p.m.: Soldier Field gates open.

6:30 p.m.: Show starts. (Owenn and Girl in Red are the openers on Friday and Saturday; Gracie Adams and Muna open Sunday.)

About 8 p.m.: Taylor Swift takes the stage. (Her set should last more than three hours.)

10:30 p.m.: Vehicles can enter the post-concert pickup area (Columbus Drive between Roosevelt Road and Balbo Drive).

Merch: Get it while it’s hot!

One of the first questions fans have about the shows is when, where and how can they get their hands on Eras Tour merchandise. As with other shows, merch will be sold in trucks inside and outside the stadium, inviting hundreds, if not thousands, of fans to line up.

The trucks will remain parked outside Soldier Field beginning Thursday all the way through Sunday, according to Soldier Field’s director of sponsorship and media, Luca Serra.

Merch will be sold early at the Stadium Green, outside Gates 3 and 4, and along the sidewalk north of the Waldron Deck. Merch will be sold Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until the show ends before midnight.

Venue rules and regulations. No fanny packs!

In order to make it inside, fans should familiarize themselves with venue regulations at Soldier Field, which include a long list of prohibited items. Water bottles, seat cushions, alcoholic beverages and balloons are some of the items not allowed inside the stadium; a full list can be found on the stadium’s website . There will also be security protocols in place such as bag searches and metal detectors at the venue’s entrances.

As with all NFL stadiums, bags should be clear and measure 12 by 6 by 12 inches . Small clutches no bigger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches are also allowed. “That being said, specifically no backpacks, fanny packs, nothing with a drawstring or any kind of a waistband,” said Serra.

Soldier Field parking and pickup. Don’t wear high heels — wear sneakers!

All parking on site at Soldier Field is now sold out. For concertgoers who purchased Soldier Field campus parking in advance, lots will open at 2 p.m. before each show.

Fans can be dropped off at the 18th Drive turnaround , which is at the 18th Drive exit ramp west of DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Traffic may be heavy, however, so dropping off at Columbus Drive or Michigan Avenue might be a better option. Be prepared to walk to Soldier Field from there.

Post-concert pickup for ride-shares and parents will be on Columbus Drive between Roosevelt Road and Balbo Drive. Vehicles will be able to enter starting at 10:30 p.m. Parents are asked to stay with their vehicle if they are using the pickup area.

Parking with shuttle service to Soldier Field:

If fans aren’t able to pre-purchase parking at Soldier Field, there are several other parking options near the venue. Serra said shuttles to and from the stadium will be available between Millennium Park Garage at 6 S. Columbus Drive, and 31st Street McCormick Place Lot B at 3050 S. Moe Drive. Shuttle services will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 1 a.m. Parking at Millennium Park Garage starts at $25-$30, and at McCormick Place Lot B it costs $50. In both garages, service begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.

Off-site parking (where to play Swift’s songs in the parking lot):

Attendees may also park at McCormick Place Lot D, 1832 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, which is a 10-minute walk to the stadium, or at the Grant Park South underground garage, 325 S. Michigan Ave., which is a 20-minute walk. Other off-site Millennium Garages — Millennium Lakeside Garage at 5 S. Columbus Drive and Grant Park North Garage at 25 N. Michigan Ave. — allow fans to purchase passes in advance.

Swift pushed through inclement weather to perform in the pouring rain at concerts in Nashville, Tennessee, and Foxborough, Massachusetts, during earlier stops of the Eras Tour. But Chicago fans can expect “pretty ideal” conditions at Soldier Field throughout the weekend, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro.

Some inland rain is possible on Friday, Castro said, but conditions near the lake are expected to be dry “and comfortable, with low humidity.”

Temperatures will be warmer inland but cooler along the lakefront at Soldier Field, with highs expected to reach the mid to upper 70s Friday through Sunday, Castro said. Concertgoers may want to bring an extra layer (may we suggest a “cardigan”?). They can expect things to cool off to the mid-60s later in the evening.

In the unlikely case there are last-minute changes in weather forecasts, Serra said Soldier Field is prepared, as staff members are “no strangers to outdoors events.”

“Whether it’s a Bears game , a Fire game, another international soccer game, or even the concerts that we had with Coldplay … where we had to shelter in place,” Serra said. “We’re very accustomed to working in that environment, and we’ll work with it as we need to.”

Shows might be canceled or postponed or simply begin earlier or later than planned if the weather turns bad. Regardless, if attendees would like to prepare for rain, they should opt for a packable raincoat instead of an umbrella, which is a prohibited item.

Getting to and from the shows: Public transportation, Divvy bikes and Metra services

For concertgoers who prefer to ditch cars and ride-shares the night of their show — given complications with parking availability and costs, price surges and traffic — there are a variety of other options such as taking trains, buses and bikes to and from the venue.

Public transportation:

Concertgoers who live in a big city might be used to “waiting for a bus that never shows” or “for trains that just aren’t coming,” but hopefully they won’t experience these lyrics from Swift’s hit songs “Hits Different” and “New Romantics” as they take public transportation to and from Soldier Field.

Chicago Transit Authority:

Extra train and bus services for the nights of the show are planned for CTA, according to a statement the CTA emailed to the Tribune. A one-day unlimited ride pass is $5 and a three-day pass is $15. Route schedules are available at transitchicago.com . Download the Ventra app to buy and use mobile tickets.

“The CTA is experienced in accommodating an influx of crowds surrounding large events at Soldier Field, and transit is a convenient and affordable option for the Swift concerts,” the statement said.

The closest CTA train station to Soldier Field is Roosevelt Station , which serves the Red , Orange and Green Line trains. The station is less than a mile walk to the stadium entrance. The CTA will add trains and provide service well after midnight. If the concerts go past 1 a.m., riders may use the Red Line and transfer to the Blue Line, as both run 24 hours every day.

The CTA is also adding numerous buses on the No. 146 Inner Lake Shore Drive/Michigan Express route, which stops next to Soldier Field at the corner of McFetridge and Special Olympics drives. Other bus options that stop at or near Soldier Field include the No. 130 Museum Campus , the No. 3 King , the No. 4 Cottage Grove and the No. 12 Roosevelt .

The CTA pointed out that the elevator from the pedway to the street in the Roosevelt station transfer tunnel between the Green/Orange elevated lines and the Red Line subway is temporarily out of service, so people with accessibility needs will need to plan accordingly.

Brandon McFadden, data analyst for Commuters Take Action — a collective of self-described frustrated Chicago commuters — said he will be live-tweeting arrival information, including average intervals, for CTA trains during the weekend so that Swifties can get home from Roosevelt Station after the shows are over.

“Thankfully, the trains are scheduled to arrive at fairly decent intervals that night,” McFadden said. “For the most part, the trains are set to come every 10 or 15 minutes each night in the 11 p.m. hour.”

He said he and other members of Commuters Take Action — who are all “crossing their fingers” and hopeful that all runs smoothly — will head downtown Friday to document and share what’s going on regarding public transportation during the first night of the Chicago Eras shows.

“I have never done a concert, but I have tried to leave the area of Soldier Field after a Bears game. And it was not a fun experience at all,” McFadden said. “And the Bears game wasn’t even filled out the day that I was trying to get on the train at Roosevelt. So I can only anticipate how chaotic it’s going to be.”

Swiftie Molly Fleck, 36, inspired us with her Swift-themed puns in a tweet to the CTA where she expressed hopes for a smooth public transportation experience for all Chicago concertgoers. “Public transit and Taylor Swift are two of my great passions,” she told the Tribune over the phone.

While she won’t be attending the Chicago concerts (she’ll be at one of the Detroit shows next weekend), the Lincoln Park resident will be going to one of the Beyoncé shows at Soldier Field July 22-23, so she’s waiting to see how it all plays out this weekend. The nighttime and weekend frequency of CTA transit “hasn’t been very good” lately, which worries her.

“I think that our non-car infrastructure is one of the best assets that Chicago has as a cultural destination,” Fleck said, “because it’s easy for people who are not from Chicago — and even people who live in the city — to get around to all of the great things that we have to offer and not have to worry about the time and expense of having a car that needs a place to be while you are doing the fun thing that you want.”

“My No. 1 option right now for when I go see Beyoncé is riding my bike down there,” Fleck said. “Because I don’t have to worry about getting a ride-share, I don’t have to worry about whether the train’s gonna show up, or squeezing on the train with 80,000 other people. I can walk out of the stadium, I can get on my bike, I can get on the Lakefront Trail and I can be home in a predictable amount of time.”

Divvy bikes:

If concertgoers are similarly inspired by Fleck, an option for those who also want to have a main character moment after a show and swish through the city with “the breeze in their hair on the weekend” — as in Swift’s song “Karma” — might want to turn their attention to Chicago’s own Divvy bikes.

“Big events in the summer are really nothing new for us,” said Abel Braughton, associate general manager at Divvy. The company offers a valet service by sending field members to stations near event venues to help dock and corral their bikes.

The Divvy station south of the Field Museum near East McFetridge Drive and Lake Shore Drive will offer valet services from 5 to 11 p.m. all three days of Eras Tour shows in Chicago. Riders need to have the Lyft or Divvy application downloaded on their phones to be able to use the bikes.

And as concertgoers come out of the shows, they may be able to use Divvy’s reservation feature, which holds a bike for a 10-minute window.

“Plan your trip. Take a look at the map before you get on a bike,” Braughton said. “Plan a safe bike route that you feel comfortable with. Don’t try something super new. Bring a helmet. And leave the rest to us.”

Of course, fans can also bring their own bikes and lock them in one of several racks located near Soldier Field. Bike racks are located on the east end of the stadium near Gate 14 and on the north end of the stadium near the Children’s Garden.

Metra services for suburban transportation:

While Metra is not planning to add extra services for the Eras Tour shows in Chicago, according to spokesman Michael Gillis, suburban fans may still get to and out of the city by using any of six Metra lines that connect to Union Station and Ogilvie Transportation Center and one that stops at 18th Street :

BNSF Railway , Milwaukee North and Milwaukee West lines arrive and depart from Union Station.

Union Pacific North , Union Pacific Northwest and Union Pacific West lines arrive and depart from Ogilvie.

Metra Electric stops at 18th Street.

Metra offers two weekend-pass options . Unlimited rides on Saturday or Sunday are $7. Up to three children age 11 and under can ride free with each fare-paying adult. A weekend pass includes unlimited rides for $10, available only in the Ventra app . Check metra.com for route schedules and maps.

Additional activities

Fans who were unable to score tickets for the shows have to know there is currently no plan to sell box office tickets at Soldier Field on the days of the shows.

And while shows at other stadiums across the country have drawn thousands of such fans to listen to the concerts from the outside, ticketless Swifties are “strongly discouraged” from tailgating the concerts, according to a press release from Soldier Field.

“While the acoustics are really good inside the stadium, they’re not very good outside the stadium,” Serra said. “So people expecting to come here and be able to hear the show might be disappointed. The acoustics are just such inside the stadium that they don’t bleed outside the building.”

But Swifties who lost out on tickets — as well as the lucky ones with concert dates who won’t be satisfied by Swift’s 44-song set list — can hear her music throughout the weekend at many local bars and venues.

Scarlet Bar, 3320 N. Halsted St.

From Thursday through Sunday this week, the Northalsted mainstay will host a series of no-skips events dedicated to playing two of Swift’s albums each night starting at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday is a doubleheader, with play-throughs of “Fearless” and “Speak Now” scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Swift’s debut album and her newest release, “Midnights,” will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Scarlet has hosted album release events for Swift’s releases since “1989? came out in 2014. Demand has skyrocketed since, said general manager AJ Miranda.

“‘Red’ was insane,” Miranda said, referring to Swift’s 2021 rerelease of her 2012 foray into pop music; the singer is in the process of rerecording and rereleasing her older albums, which she does not own. “I’m guessing that ‘Speak Now’ will only be 10 times bigger,” Miranda said, referring to the upcoming July rerelease of Swift’s fan-favorite third album.

Replay Lincoln Park, 2833 N. Sheffield Ave.

Replay, known for its themed pop-ups, is celebrating Eras weekend with a long list of Swift-themed events. Swifties can try drinks like the Delicate, with Earl Grey-infused gin, vanilla, lemon and honey, or the Cruel Summer, a blue raspberry jello shot.

Events at Replay this week include Taylor trivia on Thursday at 7 p.m., a singalong happy hour on Friday at 5 p.m. and dance parties Friday and Saturday nights. There is no cover.

Swifties still holding out hope for a chance to see her live can meet on the dance floor at midnight Thursday, when Replay will announce the winner of an Eras Tour ticket giveaway, said owner Mark Kwiatkowski. It costs $20 to enter the raffle and fans can do so in person or on Tock, he said. The winner will be awarded with two tickets to a show of their choice.

Burning Red at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave.

Chicago-based Taylor Swift tribute band Burning Red plays at Lincoln Hall Saturday at 8 p.m. VIP tickets, which include a merch package, are sold out, but general admission tickets are available for $22 in advance online or $25 day-of.

Bandleader and lead vocalist Gina Crosley-Corcoran said the band hopes to provide fans with and without tickets alike the opportunity to “dress up and trade bracelets and have that Taylor experience.”

Minors can attend the show with a parent or guardian.

Woodie’s Flat, 1535 N. Wells St.

Fans can enjoy themed drinks and photo opportunities at a Taylor Swift dance party at Woodie’s Flat in Old Town on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Tickets for $10 apiece are available on Eventbrite; as of Tuesday, the party was about 70% to 75% sold out, said event organizer Hannah Gamble. Some tickets for the 21-and-up event would be available at the door, she said.

Hopsmith Chicago, 15 W. Division St.

Tickets are also available on Eventbrite for an ages 21+ Champagne Problems brunch at Hopsmith Chicago Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets cost $15.

Swifties who want to get their fourth drink in their hands can take advantage of a $35 bottomless deal that includes mimosas, Bloody Marys and Bud Light. Brunch was about 50% sold out as of Tuesday, Gamble said, and some tickets would be made available at the door.

Roscoe’s Tavern, 3356 N. Halsted St.

The Northalsted bar is hosting an Eggs & Eras drag brunch on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Tables are almost all taken, said special events manager Shawn Hazen, but diners looking to save themselves a seat can make reservations on OpenTable or by emailing [email protected].

Roscoe’s is also hosting an After Eras dance party on Sunday at 11 p.m.

“We’re not sure what to expect,” Hazen said. “Are people going to be Taylored out by the end of the concert weekend? We don’t know.”

Taylor Swift Announces 'Speak Now' World Tour Dates

[artist id="2389485"]Taylor Swift[/artist] is ready to take Speak Now on the road. The singer will kick off her world tour February 19 in Singapore. She'll bring the show Stateside on May 27 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Before the tour wraps October 8 in Dallas, Swift will have played 87 shows in 19 countries. Swift also has plans to add additional dates in Australia and New Zealand. Ticket prices will start at $25.

The tour will include multiple costume changes and will show off Swift's musicianship, as she plans to play several instruments during the show.

"I'm so excited to go back out on tour again in 2011!" Swift said in a statement. "The Fearless Tour was so much fun and even more unforgettable than I ever imagined, and I can't wait to get back out and play my new music from Speak Now ! The fans have been so amazing, and I'm thrilled to play in new cities around the world and meet even more of my fans in 2011!"

If you’ve never experienced Swift perform up close and in person, Speak Now-World Tour (Live)—recorded on various stages and arenas during her 2011 global tour—is as close as you can get. The impassioned “Sparks Fly” kicks off these 16 collected performances against the wild cheers of her devoted fans. Speak Now Tour review - Taylor Swift

When Taylor Swift wrote the hit ”Today Was a Fairytale,” she totally wasn’t kidding. For Swift, every day is a fairy tale, and her Speak Now Tour is no exception. During a July 20 stop in Newark, Our Lady of Nice-Girl Pop played ”Long Live,” a song about kings and queens who slay dragons, for a crowd of 10,000 screaming munchkins. Ball gowns were donned. Staircases were slowly descended. A chapel wedding was staged. For the grand finale, ”Love Story,” Swift even performed from a balcony that floated up on wires and swooped over the nosebleed seats. It was kinda like magic. When she sang ”Sparks Fly,” they actually did. (Cue the fireworks.)

Whether strumming the ukulele under a twinkling tree (”Fearless”) or pounding the piano during a faux snowstorm (”Back to December”), the 21-year-old captures all the OMG wonder and I’ll-just-die darkness of adolescence. Every first date warrants harps and violins; every feeling is blown up to Jumbotron size. Those past the unicorns ‘n’ hearts stage may roll their eyes — but really, they’re not who Swift is speaking to. And considering how convincingly she sings about freshman-year angst on ”Fifteen,” it’s a little sad to think that she will never be that age again. Maybe that’s why she covered Bruce Springsteen’s ”Dancing in the Dark” and Bon Jovi’s ”Livin’ on a Prayer” in tribute to her Jersey audience: Both songs are about how things get harder when you get older. All the more reason to give yourself over to Swift’s girly fantasia. Today might’ve been a fairy tale, but you’ve gotta have something for tomorrow. Taylor Swift Confirms Speak Now World Tour Dates

Taylor Swift has released the dates for a world tour behind her new smash hit album Speak Now . The 87-date tour will find Taylor in Asia and Europe this winter before she hits the road in the U.S. next spring.

The mega-tour kicks off in Singapore on February 9 with stops in South Korea, Japan, The Philippines and Hong Kong coming later that month. She will then start a European leg in Brussels, Belgium on March 6.

After stops throughout mainland Europe and the U.K., Swift will start her U.S. tour with back-to-back shows in Omaha, Nebraska on May 27 and 28.

Ever since the first night of Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour — when the pop star announced she’d be performing two surprise acoustic songs at every show — fans have been waiting with bated breath to find out which gems from her discography will be unearthed next.

Swift kicked off the tour in Glendale, Ariz. in March with “Mirrorball” from “Folklore” and “Tim McGraw” from her 2006 self-titled debut album. Now, Swift has taken the Eras Tour worldwide, starting in Japan on Feb. 7 and continuing to Australia, Singapore and Europe in the coming months.

After two hit records, Taylor Swift decided that her third would be longer and more personal, and she would write it entirely by herself, no co-writers. The songs would concern major events in her life, many of which occurred in the public eye. The lyrics would take the form of letters, direct addresses, one-on-one conversations where she always got the last word. She wanted to use her newfound wisdom to reflect on her parents, her dreams, and how it felt to stand on stage and notice a bigger crowd every night, shouting the words back at her. The working title was Enchanted , though she didn’t always feel that way. After 2008’s massively successful Fearless , Swift wrestled with her outsider persona and sudden celebrity, and the dissonance weighed heavily on her relationships. But she was learning fast.

Swift was 20 when the album, eventually titled Speak Now , came out and sold over a million copies in its first week—a record high in 2010. She had, and would continue to have, bigger hits, but these songs were breakthroughs in their own right. Co-produced by Nathan Chapman, the album is patiently sequenced; the average song length is just under five minutes, giving Swift enough time to pace her hooks—which had never been bigger—and her lyrics, which had never sounded more careful or wise. It’s an album focused on growing up, something she was learning would often be confusing, sad, and uncomfortable. It’s her most unabashedly transitional work: between adolescence and adulthood, innocence and understanding, country and pop. She was at a crossroads, and she was feeling lucky.

Swift had already become known for her intimate and intense relationship with fans. On these songs, she took a more authoritative role. There’s “Sparks Fly,” an early song that developed a big reputation after a live acoustic version circulated online. It appears here with all its fireworks and rain-soaked drama, a call to arms for people who’d been following since the beginning. There’s also “Never Grow Up,” a quiet acoustic ballad that draws the clearest line to her old material. Only now, Swift is wistful and sentimental, sounding far older than her years as she urges girls younger than her to savor every moment: “I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone,” she sings softly. It’s a heavy thought for a young songwriter, and the key word is just . As in, this is all happening right now , and if I don’t document it, it may disappear.

Here is where Taylor Swift found a lasting source of inspiration: the inevitable rise and fall of life and love, recast as emotional emergency. In the past, she had written sweet, airtight story-songs by turning the characters in her life into archetypes—nice guys, popular girls. Now she was dealing with a more complicated set of characters, so she adjusted her scale accordingly. “Dear John” and “The Story of Us” are likely about the same older musician. One is a crushing six-minute ballad about a famous guitarist emotionally manipulating a teenage songwriter. The other is a comic send-up of the night they ran into each other backstage at an awards show after the romance ended. The magic is how she wrings their hyperspecificity for universal truths—the older musician could be the sophomore jerk from the football team; the CMA Awards could be an after-school assembly. The message was clear: Swift was moving on, but she wasn’t leaving you behind.

And while it’s no great revelation that the mechanics of high school don’t end after graduation, Swift was not content to simply reapply old morals to new stories. So many of these songs rely on the tension of hindsight—a perspective she always longed for but never wielded quite so artfully. Hear how regretful and apologetic she sounds in “Back to December,” the increasing desperation in each chorus of “Last Kiss.” Even “Innocent,” her much-anticipated response to Kanye West stealing her mic at the 2009 VMAs, takes a nurturing approach as she guides her tormentor through his old ambitions and career highs, asking how close he is to the man he dreamed of becoming. (After all, she acknowledges, public adoration can be a fickle thing, and one day, it might be her wondering what went wrong.) She affirms in the chorus, “You’re still an innocent.” It’s a strange, writerly phrase that she must realize sounds phonetically identical to “ You’re stealing innocence ”—a particularly Swiftian way to accuse and forgive in the same breath.

On Speak Now , the way things sounded became just as important as what they meant. Swift was honing her skills as a pop songwriter, imagining a future where “country” was a biographical detail as opposed to an accurate descriptor of her music. Her arrangements were louder—an anxious string section tugging its collar through “Haunted,” a harmony-layered coda unfolding at the end of “Enchanted.” “Better Than Revenge” is a pop-punk bloodletting that owes its existence to Paramore , and it foreshadows the work to come: “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Bad Blood.” Taking aim at a budding actress now dating her ex, it’s fascinating for how wildly Swift changes her perspective while maintaining focus: burning holes in her enemy’s eyes during the verses, pleading to her ex that “she’s not what you think” during each chorus, acknowledging the power and futility of her own response (“She thinks I’m psycho ’cause I like to rhyme her name with things”). You imagine her singing it, barging into a crowded room while everyone covers their mouth and avoids eye contact.

It’s the cathartic freakout during an otherwise elegant party, full of personal revelation. She has a moment of ecstasy in “Mine,” where she and a new love vow to “never make my parents’ mistakes,” which is precisely what you do at your first hint of independence and stability. In “Mean,” she puts her personal life on the back-burner to deal with the people antagonizing her professionally. Its lyrics are proud and snappy, as banjos pluck around her like sarcastic bluebirds on her shoulders. “One day I’ll be living in a big ol’ city,” she promises a man who tore her down in reviews. Does it actually hurt a critic to know that the artist will always be more powerful and rich? Probably not, but it’s not really for him anyway—Swift already got what she wanted. In “Ours,” a bonus track as good as any song she’s ever written, she sums it up with a smile that you can hear in her voice: “Don’t you worry your pretty little mind/People throw rocks at things that shine.” She knew she was approaching her supernova phase.

The ensuing tour was a blockbuster moment she had been preparing for. The intricate, explosive set design involved a full band, dancers, actors portraying the characters in her songs. There were fireworks, a massive bell she hurled herself at during “Haunted,” and a Shakespearean veranda that soared over the audience during “Love Story.” It was a little ridiculous. But for all the fans in attendance, this was how they always saw her: a superhero borne from their subconscious, someone larger than life and unafraid to look absurd. For the rest of the world, it was Swift’s reintroduction: Drop everything now—I have arrived. It’s the character she’d play for the rest of her career.

The concerts would begin with a recitation over the loudspeakers, a piece that also appears in the album’s liner notes. “Real life is a funny thing, you know,” it began. “There is a time for silence. There is a time for waiting your turn. But if you know how you feel, and you so clearly know what you need to say, you’ll know it.” It reads as inspirational but, in retrospect, it was also a warning: Things won’t stay the same forever. Life can be jarring, full of little interruptions. You won’t be prepared for everything. Near the end of the show, Swift introduced a heartland anthem called “Long Live,” tearfully confiding that it was written for all her fans, her whole band, and the team behind her. “It was the end of a decade,” she sings, “But the start of an age.” The young crowd roars, as if in anticipation.

This was all ahead of Swift as the album was nearing completion. Late in the process, she was out to lunch with mentor Scott Borchetta—among the first industry people to take notice of her in Nashville, offering a deal with his fledgling label Big Machine. By the end of the decade, he’d be just another on her long list of friends-turned-enemies. But for now, he was a confidant. She played him songs from the new record and discussed her plans for the rollout. She was excited. Borchetta was, too. But the working title didn’t seem right. Enchanted ? He thought of princesses, fairytales, childhood. The old Taylor. This seemed different. Maybe she felt miffed by someone second-guessing her vision; maybe she was grateful to be challenged. After all, this music was precisely about these moments when your fantasies no longer apply to reality, when you have to grow up and make a choice and live with it on your own. She excused herself for a moment, and when she returned, she had a better idea.

On May 5, the pop star announced at the Nashville stop of her The Eras Tour that she'll be releasing a re-recorded version of her 2010 album Speak Now. The enchanting revelation came just as she played "Sparks Fly," the fifth single from the record, as one of her two surprise songs of the night.

"I think rather than me speaking about it," she told the crowd, as the cover art for the upcoming Speak Now (Swift's Version) flashed across screens at the Nissan Stadium, "I thought I would show you." ( Click here to see the cover .)

The new album will be released on July 7. It will contain 22 tracks, including six previously unreleased songs from the vault.

"I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20," a message shared to Swift's Instagram announcing the re-recording read. "The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing … and living to speak about it."

The post was accompanied by a note signed by the 33-year-old, reading: "I always looked at this album as my album, and the lump in my throat expands to a quivering voice as I say this. Thanks to you, dear reader, it finally will be."

Speak Now is the third album from Swift's discography to be re-recorded. A re-recording of 2008's Fearless was released in April 2021, followed by an updated version of her 2012's Red seven months later.

The singer is in the process of re-recording her six earliest albums after a dispute with her previous record label Big Machine Label Group. As Swifties know all too well, Swift started the venture after Scott Borchetta, who ran the label, sold her masters to Justin Bieber 's manager Scooter Braun .

"Thankfully, there's power in writing your music," Swift said of her decision in a 2019 interview with Billboard. "And the reason I'm rerecording my music next year is because I do want my music to live on. I do want it to be in movies, I do want it to be in commercials. But I only want that if I own it."

Rather than mine the genre’s past, the South Side native draws from his decades of experience as a CTA bus driver to write songs about struggles in everyday life. His guitar playing and stage persona are both wildly entertaining, and his music feels overly modern, more than most contemporary blues players. This show is an album release party for “Shut Up and Play!,” his latest on Chicago’s Alligator Records.

Winnetka Music Festival

5 p.m. June 14-15, Lincoln Avenue and Pine Street in downtown Winnetka; tickets $49+

This is the eighth year for this North Shore indie music festival. This year, it features Seattle rock band Band of Horses, German rock duo Milky Chance, British soul singer Yola, the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans, singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter and Austin garage rockers Heartless Bastards.

This veteran singer-songwriter is a Chicago luminary for his deep catalog of records, both with his band Dolly Varden and collaborative solo efforts with Chicago’s free jazz community. He’s also a beloved songwriting teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and he often takes his instruction out of the classroom and into the recording studio, where he has recorded several albums by local songwriters. This is an album release show for “Ghosts,” his latest record on Chicago’s Pravda Records.

This festival, now in its sophomore year, attempts to curate the most exciting — and youngest — bands on Chicago’s thriving indie music scene. On the bill this year are lo-fi noise pop duo Sharp Pins, rockers TV Buddha, the electronic soundscapes of Donkey Basketball and noise-pop band — and sibling duo — twin coast.

The hill country blues of Mississippi sound much different from what you’ll hear in Chicago or anywhere else, and the only opportunity to hear it directly from the source is from the next generation of those who invented it. Cedric Burnside’s grandfather, R.L. Burnside, was a longtime musician who only gained prominence during the alt-rock era of the 1990s; Cedric — a guitarist and drummer — has carried the torch ever since. His minimalist sound and hard grooves create the backdrop of “Hill Country Love ,” his latest record.

Sun Ra Arkestra

8 p.m. and 10 p.m. June 28 at Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave.; tickets $40+

The pioneering composer, bandleader and otherworldly presence Sun Ra may no longer be with us, but his Arkestra continues his music throughout the world. This two-show stand features saxophonist Marshall Allen, who has been with the group since 1958, and more than a dozen players performing Sun Ra compositions. Expect many excursions ranging from big band swing to free jazz.

One of the most consistently rewarding events of the Chicago summer, this three-stage, multi-night celebration of American roots music offers something for everyone: zydeco, blues, jazz, country, folk and beyond. Nikki Lane and Sierra Hull are headliners along with the Jayhawks, the Old 97’s and Robert Randolph & The Family Band, along with FitzGerald’s favorites like Marcia Ball, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, The Waco Brothers, Michael McDermott and Jon Dee Graham. Plus, there’s barbecue.

When Charlie Musselwhite was a teenager, he moved from his native Memphis to Chicago to hang out at South Side blues clubs and learn from the first generation of electric blues masters. Soon enough, the harmonica player became one himself. Making his name on the psychedelic blues scene on the West Coast, Musselwhite has built a long and distinguished career as a singer, sideman and composer, collaborating with everyone from Bob Dylan to Ben Harper. Now recording for Chicago’s Alligator Records, Musselwhite is as vibrant a performer as ever.

The Baseball Project

7 p.m. July 4 at Space, 1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston; tickets $27+

Summer is the natural time for this supergroup to emerge on concert stages to play perfectly crafted songs based on little-known stories of baseball history. If you’re not a baseball fan, no problem: The songs on “Grand Salami Time!,” the group’s most recent record, are perfect power-pop fare for secular fans of the sport. This is also a special opportunity to catch half of R.E.M in a rare club show: Along with drummer Linda Pitmon, guitarist-singers Scott McCaughey of the Young Fresh Fellows and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate, the Baseball Project’s lead guitarist and bassist are Peter Buck and Mike Mills.

Def Jam Records veteran Teairra Marí most recently emerged through a series of mixtapes featuring cameos from Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy and Nicki Minaj. This show, billed as “the Ultimate Black Party’’ for Chicago Black Pride weekend, includes a series of guests including Stevia Smoke Da Rapper, GakTrizzy, ThizzMarley, Aki Da Rapper, Cash Da Trapper, Ok’Jaycen and DJ Gucci Roxx and DJ Brice. And yes, there’s a twerking contest.

Frankfort Bluegrass Festival

10 a.m. July 13-14; downtown Frankfort, free

One of the country’s largest bluegrass weekends of the summer happens in Chicago’s south suburbs every July. The festival spans two days and takes over four stages in Frankfort’s historic downtown, featuring groups from across the U.S. This year’s headliners include bluegrass veteran Peter Rowan and his band, Nashville singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale & The Po’ Ramblin Boys, Chicago’s Special Consensus, AJ Lee & Blue Summit from California. South Korea bluegrass even gets the spotlight, thanks to sets by Country Gongbang, a group that sings in two languages.

8 p.m. July 12 at the Hideout; 1354 W. Wabansia St., tickets $30+

Jah Wobble is widely known for his role as the bassist in Public Image Ltd (PiL), fronted by former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon. He has had a long solo career, too and is now credited as a pioneer in bringing dub music to the mainstream. The British musician has been a much sought-after collaborator throughout his musical life, having recorded with Baaba Maal, Sinead O’Connor, Brian Eno and Pharoah Sanders, and his pursuit of world rhythms continues to make him an influence on a wide range of music from industrial rock to hip-hop. For this show, he will perform dub arrangements to the 1979 PiL classic album “Metal Box.”

As the youngest son of pioneer Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti is Afrobeat royalty. He began performing as a saxophonist and percussionist in Egypt 80, his father’s sprawling band, and he became the frontman once the elder Kuti died. In the decades since then, Kuti has made a name for himself as a formidable bandleader and vocalist who, like his father, channels urgent social and political messages through the music.

Out of Space Skokie

5 p.m. July 26-28 in Illinois Science + Technology Park Field; 4900 Searle Parkway, Skokie, tickets $49.50+

Out of Space, the annual festival on Evanston’s Canal Shores public golf course, moves this summer to neighboring Skokie while its original location gets restored. The indie rock lineup is just as strong, however. This year, headliners are Courtney Barnett with Bob Mould and Squirrel Flower (July 26), Thee Sacred Souls and St. Paul and the Broken Bones (July 27), and Guster with The Lone Bellow and Devon Gilfillian.

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour set list features a surprise song (or two), so far performed during a mini acoustic set, on each date of the the superstar’s trek, which kicked off in March 2023.

Guitar in hand and making her way to the end of the stage’s catwalk at March 17’s Eras kickoff in Glendale, Ariz., Swift revealed her intentions for the acoustic portion of her long-awaited live show. She’ll perform a surprise song that will not be played again on this tour — probably.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” she said with a small laugh, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

Here Are All the Celebrities Who Have Attended Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour is her first real tour in five years, and the first time the prolific songwriter is getting to perform selections from Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights to sold-out stadium crowds.

Eras Tour night one introduced a career-spanning, whopping 44-song setlist with a runtime of more than three hours, with Swift playing anywhere from one to eight tracks from all 10 of her full-length studio albums. The show’s nightly surprise is sure to keep her fans on their tallest tiptoes, waiting to hear what gem will be unveiled at their concert.

"Mirrorball"

Performed at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (March 17, 2023)

“I was thinking about the first one I would play for you,” Swift said at the very first Eras Tour concert, to a crowd of fans who were still gloriously spoiler-free about what was in store for the rest of the show. “I was thinking about what song to play first, and I was thinking about how one of the songs that I wrote with you in mind during the pandemic was one of the first songs I wrote for Folklore , and it was me writing about how badly I craved the connection that I feel from the care that you have directed in my way. I’m trying to tell you I love you, and I’m babbling,” she noted. Swift tried again: “I was trying to think of sort of an eloquent way to say that I love you and I need your attention all the time, and I came up with ‘I’m a mirrorball.'” After the wordy intro, Swift begins singing “Mirrorball” at the 2:17 timestamp in the video above.

"Tim McGraw"

“I was thinking about tonight and how special this is,” Swift explained on the opening night of The Eras Tour, and then added, “So I thought it might be kind of fun to play the very first song I ever put out.” The crowd gladly sang along to her pretty piano rendition of her debut single, nearly 17 years after it was first released. “Tim McGraw” was the only track from her first album to make the Eras setlist in Arizona.

"This Is Me Trying"

“I keep forgetting what key it’s in — one second. It’s lost all concept to me,” Swift joked before launching into the emotional Folklore track as the first of two surprise songs, at the second show of The Eras Tour.

"State of Grace"

Swift brought the Red album opener down to its roots as a piano ballad in Glendale. Her delicate vocals were echoed by a stadium of thousands joining in, making for a chilling moment of connection between a singer-songwriter and her fans.

“I do get ideas from places. I actually saw an interview that Beabadoobee did — who is our amazing, brilliant opening act tonight — and they were saying, ‘Oh, you’re going on The Eras Tour. What song might you want to hear?’ And she was like, ‘I grew up listening to songs on her first album.’ And she named a specific song. So I figured, you know what, for her first show with us, I’ll play the specific song that she said she would want to hear. So this is a song I wrote for my ninth-grade talent show. It’s called ‘Our Song.’”

"Snow on the Beach"

“Lana Del Rey put out a new album. It’s called Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Guys, it’s so good. You probably already know that, but it’s just extraordinary. I just think she’s the best that we have. I think we need to make it a priority as a group to stream, buy, support this album and this artist. She knows I’m obsessed with her, and she was kind enough to make a song with me on Midnights called ‘Snow on the Beach’ because she’s a generous king. She did that for me, and I’ll never forget how nice she’s been to me. It’s so cool when you have favorite artists and they turn out to be so nice to you. "Cowboy Like Me" (with Marcus Mumford)

“Sad Beautiful Tragic”

Swift worked in “Sad Beautiful Tragic” from Red to the setlist during her acoustic portion of the Arlington show. Strumming it on just an acoustic guitar, she introduced the song saying, “I love this one. When I love a song, I don’t care what anyone says.”

"Mad Woman"

Swift picked up the guitar for surprise song No. 2 of the night, complimenting the particularly loud Tampa crowd. She explained that she thought she’d play a song they might know and want to sing along with. “Just thought that would be nice, which is the opposite of mean,” she quipped.

"Today Was a Fairytale"

“You make every day on this tour feel like a fairytale,” Swift told her fans before performing the song, originally featured on the soundtrack for the 2010 film Valentine’s Day , on piano. (At the second of three Houston shows, she admitted that The Eras Tour has basically become her “entire personality.”)

"Begin Again"

“No shade to the other songs on the album,” Swift joked, expressing an utmost love for the emotional ballad from her debut album, which she played at the piano for the night three Houston audience. “Cold as You” immediately trended on Twitter while she sang the song live on tour for the first time in a decade.

“This is one of my favorite moments in the show because it kind of keeps me on my toes,” Swift said to a wild crowd in Atlanta.

“When I was rerecording my album Fearless , I looked back and I was listening to this one … I remember when I wrote this one I was so obsessed with this sort of, like, rant I put at the end of the song,” she said, hinting at the deep cut that was to come. “And I never, I don’t think I really got to perform it live. "Coney Island"

A pretty long speech came before the first-ever solo (and first-ever at all) live performance of the heart-wrenching Evermore highlight, originally a duet with with Matt Berninger.

“Any time I’m gonna talk about or even reference another artist, I feel inclined to tell you that if they’re not here, they’re not here,” she warned the crowd. “No one else is here. You are stuck with me. It’s only me. But I am gonna talk about another artist. I just feel like, you know, stadiums are huge and it’s important to really communicate, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m gonna talk about another artist who has an album that just came out that is so incredible. The National just had an album come out. This band has influenced me beyond my ability to verbalize how much they’ve influenced me — just lyrically, their ability to set a scene, their ability to tell a story. And obviously, Aaron Dessner is in The National and he has completely changed my life. Before playing the next surprise song at the piano, a selection from her debut, Swift reflected on her early years in Nashville, noting that she’d moved to the city while in eighth grade. “I’d been writing songs since I was 12, but when I think about Nashville I think about writing all the songs that would end up on my first album,” she told the crowd.

Swift welcomed “kind, wonderful genius” Aaron Dessner to the stage on a stormy night in Nashville to join her on the surprise song from the 3AM version of Midnights . “He was warned about the rain, and he did accept the challenge anyway,” she said.

“Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” was “one of our favorites when we made it,” Swift noted.

“I want to play a song that when I wrote it, I was writing about all these relationship things that hadn’t happened yet,” Swift said from her seat at the piano. She described how “it’s crazy” to go back and listen to songs that at the time were rooted in “fantasy” but at her age now are relatable, and then introduced the Speak Now track that was coming next: “This is called ‘Mine,'” Swift said.

"Gold Rush"

“I wanted to start out with this one in Philly because there was sort of a — I don’t know how large the debate was, but I did see the debate,” Swift told the audience, referencing the “Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door” lyrics from “Gold Rush.”

“I take requests if they are polite and decently worded,” Swift told the sold-out crowd, adding that the request came from special guest Phoebe Bridgers.

"Forever & Always"

"The Best Day"

Tears had to have been aplenty throughout the stadium on Mother’s Day as Swift told the story of “The Best Day” and performed it on piano.

“I secretly recorded a song on Fearless ,” she told the crowd, recalling being 16 or 17 at the time and explaining that it was very tricky to get this project done without her mother knowing. “It was very sneaky and fun,” she said.

“I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother but her as a friend,” Swift said. After playing the sweet song for her mom for the first time, while showing her the video of personal family footage set to the track that she edited together herself, she asked her mom, “Did you like the song?” “It’s such a beautiful song. Where did you find it? It sounds exactly like the things we went through” Mom replied, not even comprehending that her own daughter would write a song about the two of them. “I wrote it and recorded it secretly,” Taylor told her. “It is our memories. That’s about us.” Needless to say, there were plenty of tears that day, too.

Before giving this Midnights track its live debut, Swift got candid with fans about how her life’s going behind the scenes.

For the first time in Eras Tour history, Swift performed both surprise songs on guitar. That’s because her piano took on a life of its own after getting damaged by rain during the show the night prior, causing Swift to last-minute switch over to guitar for “Red.”

“Literally, it was like a water park under the stage,” she recalled to fans at the May 21 show. “This has clearly broken my keyboard. It was literally underwater — I don’t know how any of the instruments were working last night.”

“Getaway Car”

“I know you’ve wanted to hear this song,” Swift teased before her first surprise acoustic offering. And she wasn’t exaggerating. The pick was “Getaway Car,” a beloved fan fave, and for the song, frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff joined her on stage. “He’s been one of my best friends — he feels like a family member,” Swift said while welcoming “Jersey’s own” Antonoff. In addition to singing lead on a few lines, Antonoff aided Swift with some forceful acoustic strumming on the Reputation highlight.

Midnights is the most recent album to drop before Taylor’s Eras Tour, so it’s no surprise that it takes up a good portion of the setlist. Even so, the standard Eras Tour setlist doesn’t include one of the album’s absolute best songs — but the evening’s night’s crowd was in for a treat. “This is one of my favorites off Midnights , but I haven’t played it yet,” Swift said, before performing a gorgeous rendition of “Maroon” while seated at an upright piano festooned with a floral design.

For this first-ever live performance of the “From the Vault” track off of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) , Swift decided to make it all the more special for her fans in Chicago. “When I was re-recording  Fearless , I thought it would be really cool to have one of my favorite artists sing on one of the song,” she told the screaming crowd. “We are so lucky Chicago … because not only did that artist say ‘yes,’ but Maren Morris is actually here tonight.” Morris joined Swift on stage for a beautiful rendition of the ballad, later writing on her Instagram that she “won’t ever be shutting up” about getting to perform the song live.

“Because it’s one of our favorites, there’s more pressure on it,” Swift  told  the crowd. “Also, this is one of the wordiest songs. I have been rehearsing this for weeks, OK? And I’ve never, ever gotten it 100% right. Not even one time. If this is the time that I get it right, you have no idea what kind of celebration I’m going to be exhibiting after that. And also, this goes for you. If you can get all the words right to this song, you get to pat yourself on the back. You win an imaginary prize. It’s yours. We love this song and I hope that I somewhat do it justice.”

Swift’s second surprise song on July 28 at Levi’s Stadium was the first live performance of “Castles Crumbling,” from her recently released album,  Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , which  debuted at No. 1  on the Billboard 200. The studio version of the track features  Paramore ‘s  Hayley Williams , but Swift delivered the track solo on piano.

When Swift played the opening chords of “Exile” from 2020’s  Folklore  for the second surprise song, the crowd cheered wildly and started searching the stage for her duet partner  Bon Iver . After all, the only other time Swift has performed the song live is alongside Justin Vernon when she  popped up during a Bon Iver concert in London  last year. But the singer/songwriter ended up performing the duet solo instead on Monday night – which made for an incredible communal experience when the crowd filled in for Vernon on the bridge, creating a powerful call-and-response between Swift and her ever-prepared fans.
