Go Toiletry Free Okay, don’t go completely toiletry free. Although a thorough baby wipe bath can keep you clean(ish) while on the go, it’s not a great long-term solution. But you can buy everything you need when you get to your destination. Now, you may not find the exact products you’re looking for—especially if you’re traveling to more remote areas—so keep that in mind if you’re not the gambling type. Maybe do some research first. That way you can pack just those hard-to-find items.

Make Your Own For all you DIY or home-baking folks out there, homemade toiletry recipes are available all over the internet. Some made with ingredients you probably already have. While we haven’t tested these recipes ourselves, if you’re resourceful and have time to experiment, this could be your kind of thing.

Essential Travel Toiletries Guide for Your Trip: Carry-On Approved

Hi! I am very excited to share another packing guide , this time focusing on essential travel toiletries!

Finding the perfect travel sized toiletries for a trip can be a challenge. There are so many to choose from and it can be difficult to know exactly what you need for a trip.

That’s where this guide comes in! In this guide you will find all of our favorite travel toiletry products and packing tips! These toiletries are essential for any trip, no matter the length, and won’t take up too much space in your suitcase.

As some of you may know, Kate and I almost always pack only in carry-ons, so most of the products mentioned below will be travel size (under 3.4 ounces) in order to comply with TSA regulations. However, if you are packing in a full size suitcase, I recommend bringing whatever size products you have in order to reduce waste and money spent purchasing new travel size ones.

Essential Travel Toiletries – Overview

Toiletry bag, reusable containers, moisturizer.

• Facial Mist / Spray

Refreshing Wipes / Spray

Dry shampoo, chapstick / lip oil, storage + packing.

Per TSA regulations, airline passengers are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. The easiest, and most common, way to accomplish this is by using a Ziploc or other brand of disposable plastic baggie.

A more sustainable way to travel is to purchase a clear toiletry or makeup bag. For some clear, TSA-approved makeup bags, check out this affordable 3-pack from Amazon !

If your products are too large to bring, consider investing in some reusable travel bottles ! This will help to reduce waste and allow you to bring all of your essential travel toiletries from home! Amazon has lots of great options with varying prices, sets, and sizes!

Skincare products are some of the most important items you can pack for a trip. When traveling, your skin can be exposed to different germs, climates, and water. In order to help your skin adjust, make sure to bring along the skincare products you use daily. Below are some of my favorites!

When packing for a trip, make sure to throw in your daily facial cleanser. My personal favorite brand of face wash is CeraVe . Their Hydrating Facial Cleanser is great for dry skin, while the Foaming Face Wash works wonders for oily and acne-prone skin. This cleanser is affordable and comes in full-size , travel-size , and eco-friendly bar options .

Facial moisturizer is an absolute must, especially when traveling. Personally, I use a lighter daytime option and a heavier cream for nighttime usage. That being said, when going on a trip, I often will only bring one moisturizer to keep my packing light.

For a light, oil-control moisturizer I highly recommend Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer Balance . This product looks great on its own, but it also allows for makeup to apply seamlessly on top.

For a more heavy-duty product, Differin’s Oil Absorbing Moisturizer with SPF 30 is a great option. Its versatility makes this product awesome for traveling. However, it is 4 ounces, meaning it is not TSA compliant for carry-ons. After a few weeks of using, I had used enough product to bring it through airport security in my backpack and had no issues. Additionally, you could always transfer to a reusable TSA-compliant toiletry container , such as the ones recommended above.

Sunscreen is arguably the most important product on this list. From anti-aging/wrinkle prevention to reducing your chances of sun-related illnesses, make sure to use sunscreen all over your body, including your face and neck. Check out our post on the best travel sunscreens here!

When choosing a sunscreen, make sure to check that it’s reef safe and eco-friendly !! This is essential for protecting and preserving our oceans.

Facial Mist

While I do not use a facial mist or spray daily, I do find them useful for traveling, especially when flying. Facial mists are great for refreshing your skin and leaving it glowing. Check out Vacation’s Super Spritzer calming and soothing mist that is made for use with water-resistant sunscreens! Personal Hygiene

Before any trip, be sure to pick up some multi-purpose wipes! Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes and Cottonelle’s Flushable Wipes are two of my recommendations. The latter also is great for traveling in countries that do not provide toilet paper in public restrooms, but be sure to know if flushing toilet paper/wipes is allowed.

For a pick-me-up, Love Beauty and Planet’s Showerless Cleansing Mist is perfect for traveling. Just spray this on to feel refreshed during a long travel day.

Dry shampoo is an absolute must when traveling! R+Co’s Dry Shampoo works wonders on second (or third) day hair. Plus, their travel size options are perfect to throw in a purse or backpack. Batiste is a tried and true dry shampoo, and it’s very affordable.

You never want to be caught with dry, chapped lips on vacation! Glossier’s Balm Dotcom is an essential universal salve – great for lips, hands, dry patches, and more. Plus, the flavors are to die for. And, of course, for a classic chapstick, Burts Bees is always a great choice.

Dry shampoo is a necessity! This is such an important list, I must refer to it on my next trip!

Great recommendations..esp about keeping skin hydrated… esp during summer months, my skin gets so dry when I don’t bring my favorite products with me.

Great list. I’ve always wondered what facial mists are actually for, but can imagine on a long haul flight that it could be nice on your skin.

Great idea on the TA approved makeup bags, I thought the plastic bags were a requirement, but it’s great to know a sustainable alternative is acceptable!

Packing your toiletries in a carry on always adds a lot more consideration. I have not yet tried a facial mist so might want to add that to my kit. And I am definitely on the search for a good dry shampoo.

Awesome list! We are slowly learning how NOT to overpack and travel just by carry-on. We have already invested in some smaller bottles for travel, as well as a small toiletries bag for carry-ons. But no matter what way you travel, this list is awesome.

I sometimes travel with a big toiletry bag that I check, but it is so much more convenient to carry on my luggage (and my husband appreciates not checking). It requires a lot more thought on my part for sure!

Looking for a travel toiletries list to help you organise your packing? If you’re traveling soon, I’ve put together a helpful list of toiletries that work for any trip. As someone who travels very frequently, I’ve narrowed down exactly which toiletries for travel are actually essential. I also know of a few toiletry items that you might not have heard of before or thought you needed. This is the only toiletries packing list you’ll ever need!  I’ve put together a printable toiletries list for travel that you can download as a PDF and print off at home to make packing easy every time.

I’m also going to share a few tips for packing toiletries , how to lighten your load and share some of the  best travel toiletries I’ve come across over my years of packing toiletries for flying, cruising, road tripping or backpacking. The Complete Travel Toiletries List

Essential toiletries.

These are your travel toiletry essentials. Most of this stuff will feature on everyone’s toiletry bag checklist. If there are any things on this list of toiletries items that you don’t use at home then they’re probably not essential travel toiletries for you. A few of these items are personal preference only like hand cream or cotton buds. For guys, this is basically you whole toiletries list for men.

• Shampoo – Packed in  GoToob Travel Bottles if you’re traveling less than 2 weeks or traveling carry on only.
• Conditioner  – Packed as above
• Hair brush / comb
• Soap / body wash
• Toothpaste – Get a travel sized toothpaste if you’re traveling with carry on only
• Toothbrush – Folding toothbrushes like this are great for travel
• Dental floss – Pick a small travel size one
• Deodorant – Make sure it’s under 3oz if you’re traveling carry on only
• Facial wipes / cleanser – Wipes are easy and less messy than a liquid cleanser
• Facial moisturiser – I use Rosehip oil as it’s small, easy to pack and lasts a long time but whatever you use at home is right for you
• Body moisturiser – You can leave this out if you’re staying in hotels but bring it if you’re using Airbnb, cruising or prefer a specific brand
• Hand cream – Great for the flight!
• Lip balm – Great for the flight, sun or skiing
• Coconut oil – One of my top essential toiletries for traveling! Packing in a  GoToob , it is so useful for travel as a moisturiser, after sun, shaving gel, hair treatment, make up remover etc. If you plan on using this, you can omit other items on this list as necessary.
• Razor – I use this small women’s travel razor
• Shaving gel / oil – Shaving oil is more space efficient and is a an essential for a men’s toiletries list
• Small mirror – I use this small magnifying mirror which has suction cups so you can use it on a hotel room window or mirror
• Nail clippers
• Cotton buds / cotton pads

Nice to Have / Trip Specific Toiletries for Vacation

These items are either things that are just nice to have or depend on the type of trip you’re taking. Here are some of the extra toiletries to take on vacation:

• Sunscreen – This sunscreen smells amazing!
• Insect repellent spray
• After sun lotion / aloe vera – For sunburn or  moisturising your skin after sun exposure, toiletry bag essentials if you’re at the beach!
• Anti-chafe balm / powder – Get this anti-chafe balm if you’re traveling somewhere humid, doing a lot of activity or walking a lot.
• Foot powder – Pick up a travel size foot powder if you’re doing lots of hiking or walking around cities, you can also use anti-chafe balm for this.
• Tiger balm / Deep heat – If you’re on an active vacation like a ski trip this is great to have.
• Hand santizer
• Menstrual cup / Tampons / Sanitary pads – An essential part of any female toiletries list depending on what time of the month you’re traveling!
• Personal lubricant
• After shave / beard oil
• Contact lenses and solution
• Essential oils  – If you need them, pack them in these small travel bottles for essential oils

Hair & Beauty Toiletries for Women

A lot of these are women’s toiletries. Mens travel toiletries are a little more simple so guys can skip this section almost entirely. Most of these are toiletries to pack for vacation, when you’re going on a cruise, to a nice resort or on a weekend city break. If you’re backpacking toiletries like this probably aren’t necessary.

• Hair ties  – Wrap your hair ties around the handle of your hairbrush and then slot your bobby pins in over the top!
• Travel Flat iron – If you have hard to control hair, consider bringing a flat iron. Here’s my list of the best travel flat irons.
• Travel hair dryer – Most hotels have a hair dryer in the room but bring your own if you’re staying in an Airbnb or at a friend’s house. Here’s my list of the best travel hair dryers on the market.
• Dry shampoo – Get a travel size dry shampoo spray
• Hair styling products – Travel size versions of hairspray and styling gel  are easy to find or put your gel into a GoTubb
• Shower cap – If you’re staying in a hotel, it’s not necessary but if you’re in an Airbnb or staying at a friend’s then it’s useful
• Make up brushes
• Make up remover
• Eye cream – You can scoop some into a little pot like this for travel
• Solid perfume – These are great for travel! The Pacifica brand has some lovely Hawaiian scents in their range.

First Aid Kit

A small first aid kit is a very useful addition to your travel toiletries list. I pack mine into a Ziploc sandwich bag and just tuck it away until I need any of the items. You don’t need to bring the whole box of Bandaids or rehydration sachets, just a few of each item is enough.

• Bite / sting cream
• Immodium – Anti-diaharreal tablets for any emergency situations!
• Pain relief  – Ibuprofen, panadol or asprin
• Antacids – These are so useful if you’re going somewhere that has spicy food!
• Rehydration salts – In case of any Delhi belly, important for kids.
• Vitamin C sachets
• Throat lozenges
• Digital thermometer – This should definitely be on your toiletries travel bag list for any families traveling with small kids.

The 10 Best Travel Toiletries Items

Add these to your toiletries shopping list! After many years, I’ve worked out these are some of the best toiletries for travel . Pack your favorite items, of course, but give these items a try when putting together your toiletry kit list.

Folding toothbrush

One of my latest travel toiletries essentials is a folding toothbrush. Not only do they take up less space and fit into a Ziploc bag but they also protect your toothbrush bristles from germy surfaces or cross-contamination.

One of my favorite travel kit toiletries for packing light! These squeezey silicone tubes are perfect for shampoo, conditioner, coconut oil, body wash or any liquid you want to turn into travel mini toiletries. It’s easy to squeeze the liquid out and they don’t leak at all. They come in 2oz or 3oz sizes so are ideal for traveling carry on only.

The tub version of GoToobs, a GoTubb lets you put an thicker creams or gels into smaller containers for travel. Very useful for things like eye cream or hair gel. You can also use them for pills, vitamins or even snacks.

Coconut oil

One of the most useful toiletries to take travelling! You can use coconut for so many different purposes. It’s one of the toiletries travel bloggers most often recommend. It does just about anything! I use mine in lieu of eye make-up remover, body moisturiser, shaving gel, massage oil, hair oil and after sun cream.

Solid perfume

I love having a little pot of solid perfume to travel with because it’s such a nice pick me up when you’re feeling travel tired, smelly or just want to juzz yourself up for a night out. This Pacifica one comes in lots of great travel themed scents also!

Ziploc bags

Ziploc bags are so useful for packing toiletries for plane trips as they make it easy to pull your liquids out for security checks. If I’m traveling carry on only then my toiletries for air travel go into a Ziploc bag. You can also use Ziploc bags to tip vitamins into and leave your bulky bottles at home. Just write the contents and dosage on the outside of the bag.

Magnifying mirror

A small magnifying mirror like this one is so useful for travel because it has suction cups so you can stick it to a hotel window or mirror when you’re doing your eye make up or using your tweezers.

Small brush

A decent travel size hair brush saves a lot of space in your travel toiletry bag.

Menstrual cup

For all the ladies, if you haven’t tried out a menstrual cup then you should definitely give it a go as it’s so useful for travel. A menstrual cup is a reusable tampon alternative that gives you 12 hours of protection and can simply be rinsed and reused. This collapsible one saves a lot of space and comes in a neat little travel container.

Another one for the ladies, BB cream is for your travel make up kit! It gives light coverage which is great for wearing make up in hot climates and also contains a sunscreen. I love this Tarte BB cream because it is very light and dries to almost a soft powder. Plus it comes in a 1oz travel size so is perfect for traveling light.

Tips for Packing Toiletries

Using my travel tips packing toiletries is easy! Here are a few of my best tips for traveling with toiletries and avoiding spillage or overpacking.

• Packing toiletries for flight – I always pack my flight toiletries in Ziploc bags in case of spillage as the air pressure of the plane can cause bottles to squeeze in and push the contents out, even if the lid is screwed shut! To avoid messy situations pack anything that might leak into a Ziploc bag and then put it inside your toiletry bag. You’ll notice that my toiletries list for air travel includes packing shampoo and conditioner into GoToobs. This is because these won’t leak. Still, be careful with any liquids.
• Packing toiletries for international travel – Unless you’re going somewhere very remote or off the beaten path, you will be able to buy most essential toiletries for travel when you’re abroad. You might not be able to get certain brands you love so if you’re picky, bring them with you.
• Packing toiletries for carry on luggage – When packing toiletries for air travel you need to adhere to the guidelines of items under 3oz or 100ml. It’s easy to purchase travel-size versions of most ladies toiletries and mens toiletries. Or you can decant your larger shampoo/conditioner bottles into GoToobs. Another alternative is to use a solid shampoo bar although I personally don’t like these and many of them require you to rinse your hair with vinegar afterwards anyway.
• Pick the right toiletry bag – When picking a toiletry bag, look for one that has good waterproof/spill-proof fabric in case of any leakages. A hook for hanging is also really useful so you can hang up your toiletries when there isn’t a lot of counter space. Printable Travel Toiletries Checklist

As it’s written from my perspective it’s obviously more a women’s toiletries packing list, but guys can definitely adapt it to a list of travel toiletries for men by cutting off the hair and beauty items and all the fancy creams. For families, these travel essentials toiletries are all the same so you’ll just need to add in your kids’ toothbrushes and make sure you have child suitable pain relief and a digital thermometer.

Here’s a quick summary: When you travel pack toiletries that you use at home, go for mini versions or put them in GoToobs, bring any trip specific items as needed and then use the best way to pack toiletries for air travel by putting them in Ziploc bags or a great toiletry kit bag.

Your Ultimate Guide to Solid Toiletries

For the last several months, I’ve been trying out tons of solid travel toiletries so I can recommend the best to you! Carry-on travelers have been highly restricted with their liquids since 2006 , and in 2018, powders came under scrutiny as well . In my own efforts to pack light and always travel carry-on only, I’ve tried tons of brands and products to figure out what’s the best, what’s most efficient, and what’s most effective to take with me when I travel. This guide is here to make things a little easier for you, so I hope it’s helpful!

Liquid Rules

Why do airlines and airports have rules about liquids? Well, in case you never heard about it or have forgotten, there was a plot (perhaps more than one) to create explosives onboard aircrafts using liquid explosives in 2006. So now the good travelers of the world have to be careful about what and how much liquid we bring onboard. The important things to note are:

• You may only bring liquids in containers of 3.4 ounces or less.
• All liquids must fit into  one clear, quart-size  bag.
• The exceptions to these rules are medical necessities such as contact solution, baby formula, prescriptions, etc.

Go lightly: How to Pack the Perfect Carry-on

Soap and shampoo.

This one is pretty common already, but the kind of soap you use matters. I love finding locally-made soaps when I travel, but there are some great ones on Amazon as well! Look for something coconut oil or shea butter, and I prefer soaps made with cold-press process, but that’s totally just a preference! Take a look at these:

*a note on dry shampoo.

The soap above is my personal preference for solid shampoo, but dry shampoo is certainly another option! Caution: it may be called “dry” shampoo, but it’s still a liquid inside, so travel size is what you’ll need. It doesn’t work well for me always because my hair is curly, and you have to brush it out. I have, however, used it after straightening my hair to make the straight locks last a couple of extra days, and it worked well! If you have straight hair, toss one in your liquids bag and give it a try. Just don’t forget your hairbrush!

Conditioner.

Coconut oil.

If you haven’t heard already, coconut oil has about a bajillion uses! It is solid at room temperature, but liquifies at around 75 degrees (or when rubbed between your hands). I’ve looked and looked for a good travel size container that won’t leak in my bag in hot climates, and I just recently found the 2-ounce, refillable jar below, as well as a gravity-feed tube! My favorite ways to use coconut oil are:

• Facial moisturizer
• Hair masque
• Makeup remover
• Shaving cream

Facial cleanser and moisturizer.

If you’re not a fan of coconut oil but still want a non-liquid makeup remover and moisturizer, wipes are definitely the way to go. They’re convenient for freshening up in-flight as well as keeping neat and tidy wherever you are in the world!

It’s easy enough to find travel-size toothpaste, but the space in that single, quart-size bag is precious! Make room in your liquids bag by packing these toothpaste tabs instead. Just chew, brush (or swish, if you’re caught without a toothbrush), and spit. Easy! The tablets below are good in a pinch:

If given a choice, however, I would bring Colgate Wisps. They make my whole mouth feel cleaner, and the little toothpick at the end means it can be your dental floss, toothbrush, and toothpaste in one!

I’ve tried quite a lot of deodorants in my time. As someone who works out daily and whose packing mantra is, “I can rewear that,” a reliable deodorant is perhaps the most important thing I pack for every trip!

Natural deodorant is also an important consideration for me because the aluminum and other ingredients in regular deodorants have been shown to cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, both of which run in my family. There are some decent natural options out there, but I recently found the one that absolutely, 100%, works far better than all the others. It’s called Native, and it comes in several incredible scents for both men and women! Go ahead and get the full-size: it’s solid!

It’s very important to use sunscreen that  works . I have been using Neutrogena for years because it’s one of the few that doesn’t break out my skin in a horrible rash. Just this summer I found their solid sunscreen, so I will never travel with a liquid suncreen again! It works like a dream, goes on smoothly and evenly, and it smells nice, too. This one is zinc-based, so it’s also reef-safe, which is essential for a beach vacation!

I’ve been looking for a solid bug repellent for years, and we finally found one! My husband is like a bug magnet (he’s just too sweet!), so an effective bug repellent is incredibly important for his comfort and overall health. We love to go hiking and just be outside, but we sometimes had to limit ourselves to certain times of day to avoid the worst of the bugs. Not anymore!

Liquids for which there are no solid options.

Unfortunately, there are some things for which there are no solid options, at least none that I can recommend. The liquids I must take with me when I travel are:

• Contact solution (medically necessary, so does not have to be restricted to the 3.4-ounce rule)
• Hair mousse, gel, foam, etc.

14 Brilliant Travel Hacks for Packing Toiletries

Packing toiletries for air travel (especially if you’re flying carry-on only) is always the hardest part of preparing for a trip.

But since I fly carry-on only about a dozen times per year, I’ve perfected my method of bringing all my bathroom supplies with room to spare and no spillage.

Here are my best travel hacks for packing toiletries whether you’re flying with carry-on or checked luggage (including tips about how to eliminate unnecessary liquids).

14 Travel Hacks for Packing Toiletries 

Use a quart sized ziploc bag for liquids.

If you’re flying carry-on only, you’re allowed one quart-sized bag for all your toiletries that are considered liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes.

There are dozens of toiletry bags that are marketed towards travelers as being TSA compliant, but beware.

In reality, I’ve seen so many travelers get caught in the security line having to remove items from their bag because it is too large. 

All you need is a quart-sized ziploc bag !

These bags are exactly 0.97 quartz in volume, so they will always pass the TSA test. 

Not only are they the cheapest option out there, they seal airtight and watertight (which can’t be said about the zippered liquids bag).

Use Liquid Pouches Instead of Bottles 

Most people tend to use refillable squeeze bottles when traveling with liquid toiletries. Unfortunately, these take up unnecessary space.

This is because if you don’t fill up the entire bottle, the bottle still takes up the same amount of space.

And if you’re only traveling for a few days to a week, chances are you’re not going to need an entire 3.4 oz (or 100 mls) of product. 

Instead, opt for liquid travel pouches .

These take up less room than bottles and allow you to bring a bigger variety of liquids!

They come in multiple sizes and are compact and lightweight.

Since they’re a ‘pouch’ and not a bottle shape, they only take up as much space as you fill them.

I have been able to bring so many more different liquids in my carry on this way. 

Using these travel pouches are the easiest way to pack shower gel for travel.

Cut Up Bars of Soap

I always pack a bar of soap instead of body wash, and this eliminates a large amount of liquids space.

If you’re only going for a few days or a week, you can even cut a bar of soap into smaller pieces to save even more space. 

Try Toiletry Sleeves for Spill-Proof Travel 

Leak-proof all your toiletry bottles - a must-have if you're flying carry-on only!

These toiletry skins are the coolest new travel hack product. 

They’re a plastic film with one closed end that you slip over the tops of your toiletry bottles, making them completely spill proof. 

If you’ve ever tried to place a piece of plastic wrap under the cap of your bottle, this is a much better method. 

While these skins should fit travel sized bottles, they were designed for full-sized bottles if you’re checking luggage.

Use Water Activated Facial Wipes

Facial wipes have always been handy for travel, but using ones that are water activated have so many benefits. 

First, you won’t have to pack a liquid face wash or makeup remover.

Second, these these ones won’t dry out since there’s no liquid in them to begin with. 

And they also double as a wash cloth. 

The Olay Daily Facials are my favorite because they’re gentle enough for sensitive skin. 

Use a Hanging Toiletry Bag to Save Space

Using a hanging toiletry bag has been my favorite toiletry travel tip. 

Many hotel bathrooms never have enough counter space, so I use this bag to hang up in the bathroom and then I can also see everything that’s in it. 

The genius thing about this bag is that the big compartment has zippers on both ends, so if you need something from the bottom, you can access it without having to take everything out first. 

Another reason why this bag is a travel game-changer – you can pack it flat if it’s unfolded in your luggage.

Use Lotion Bars and Lotion Sunscreen 

Another favorite travel hack is to use a lotion bar or stick instead of a liquid. 

Not only is it not considered a liquid, there’s also no need to worry about it spilling or exploding! 

You can also find sunscreen that comes in a stick.

Please note that for many North American airports, a lotion stick is not considered a liquid.

If you’re in Europe, Asia or Australia, double check your airport’s rules to make sure this is allowed.

Use Shampoo Bars

One of my favorite toiletry packing hacks is to bring a sha m poo bar instead of liquid shampoo.

As an added bonus, a shampoo bar is basically a zero waste travel toiletry since there’s virtually no packaging or plastic, especially if you go with a natural based bar. 

Put Deodorant in Chapstick Tubes

To save space, in the microwave, melt down your solid deodorant and then pour it into an empty chapstick tube. You can either clean out an old one or order empty ones for cheap . 

Deodorant sticks are quite large on their own, and you won’t go through a whole tube on your trip. 

Plus, this method saves you money!

It’s a great way to use up the last bits at the end of the stick that usually just gets thrown out.

Use Multi-Purpose Products

These can also be used as a body wash, face wash and even shaving gel. Multi-purpose products to save space!

Instead of using multiple different products, find one that can be used 3 or 4 ways. 

Squalene oil can be used as a face and body moisturizer, as hair oil or even as a leave-in conditioner. 

As an added bonus, squalene oil has anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce puffiness after a long day of travel.

Or use a gentle shampoo that can also be used as a body wash, face wash and even shaving gel. 

Vanicream Free & Clear Shampoo is one of the best multi-purpose products for this, and they even come in handy travel sizes.

Use Cornstarch Instead of Dry Shampoo

If you normally pack dry shampoo, this counts as an aerosol and needs to be packed in your liquids toiletry bag.

To save space, you can use cornstarch or baby powder as your dry shampoo!

If you have darker hair, you can also mix cornstarch with cocoa powder to avoid white-looking roots. 

Contact Lens Cases for Makeup and Lotions 

Don’t throw out your old contact lens cases – clean them and use them for makeup, lotions and creams.

This is a great way to pack your toiletries without having to buy extra jars or reusable containers.

They hold the perfect amount for a weekend trip and they seal rightly so no worries about any leaking.

Otherwise, you can use these inexpensive cream jars , perfect for moisturizer, foundation, lotion, even pills.

Use 1oz Dropper Bottles

If you use hair or facial oils, order yourself some empty 1 oz dropper bottles as the perfect space-saving toiletry accessory.

Use Toothpaste Tablets 

100 tablets so you can pack this for the whole family, or perfect for an extended trip.

Another way to eliminate a liquid is by using toothpaste tablets instead of your cream or gel toothpaste.

These are especially useful if you’re going on a long trip.

How Do You Pack Toiletries for a Carry-On?

When you’re flying carry-on, pack all of your liquids, aerosols, creams and lotions in a clear, quart-size ziploc bag. 

Since a quart isn’t that big, use my tips mentioned above to reduce the number of liquids you have. 

Since you don’t have much room, I like bringing only the amount of liquids I’ll need – which is why I like the fillable liquids pouches. 

All my non-liquid toiletries (bar soap, floss, toothbrush, hairbrush, bandaids, etc) go in my hanging toiletry bag, and I pack all my liquids in the ziploc bag separately. 

When I’m the security line at the airport, I can easily grab the clear liquids bag to put in on the scanner. 

After I’m through security, I usually leave my liquids in this ziploc bag, just in case anything does spill, it’s all contained and doesn’t mess up anything else in my carry-on.

Ready to pack your toiletries for travel? In this post, you'll learn options for travel-sized containers, how to fit everything in a small bag, and some special considerations for liquids. No disastrous spills for you!

It’s time to pack for your vacation and, oh my gosh...so much stuff!

If you're flying, you may be wondering how you can possibly fit all that stuff into a teeny-tiny 1-quart bag so you can pass through airport security.

And even more anxiety-producing, how will you keep things from spilling and ruining your clothes?

In my travels over the years, I’ve learned how to make one product work for multiple applications and how to calculate how much of each item to take. Most importantly, I've learned how to get everything to my location without spilling a drop.

So stay tuned, intrepid traveler. I’ve got all sorts of tips and tricks to help you pack like a pro. You’ll be able to take everything you need, fit it in a small space, and ensure that everything arrives just as you packed it.

How to Pack Toiletries for Travel Step 1: Create a Toiletry Packing List

Before you even think about packing your favorite products (makeup, cleanser, body wash, etc.), make a comprehensive list of all the toiletry items you'll need for your trip .

Having a clear checklist helps you remember all the important items you'll need to take with you.

Step 2: Gather Everything Together

There are two approaches when you get ready to pack your toiletries for travel: All-in-one bags or separate pouches. It depends on your preference, how much luggage you bring, and whether you’re flying.

Either way, start by gathering all your travel toiletries together, including what you're going to pack them in .

All-in-one travel toiletry bags

When considering toiletry bags, you want to look for something lightweight and water-resistant, if not waterproof. You'll have a choice of either a bag that hangs or one that sits upright on the counter.

If you carry a lot of toiletries, the  BAGSMART Toiletry Bag  the  WDLHQC Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag , or the  July Large Toiletry Bag  are good choices.

If you can get by with a little less space, the small  Sea to Summit Travelling Light Hanging Toiletry Bag is a winner for a hanging bag. If you prefer a stand-up bag, check out the Peak Design Women’s Toiletry and Cosmetics Bag  (which can also hang).

Travel toiletry pouches

If you want to pack all your toiletries in one piece of luggage, then separate your toiletries into smaller pouches or bags. That way, you can snuggle them in between other items in your luggage. For example, you could have a small bag each for your first aid kit, makeup, shaving kit, hair supplies, etc.

One problem with small travel bags or pouches is finding waterproof ones. So, if you’re concerned about anything leaking, put it in its own Ziploc bag before putting it in your pouch. Or eliminate some of your liquids . For example, use dry shampoo instead of liquids, toothpaste tablets instead of a tube of toothpaste, and solid deodorant instead of liquid.

I love Cotopaxi bags—so colorful!—and the smaller of their Cubos del Dia Travel Cubes  would fit this purpose. You can use the large one as a packing cube for clothes and miscellaneous items.

And Tom Bihn (my fave for top quality) has a variety of cubes and trays of different sizes. I use the  Travel Tray if I’m not flying. If I'm packing my toiletries for air travel, then I use a combination of an All-Fabric 3D Organizer Cube  for non-liquids and a  Clear 3D Organizer Cube for liquids. And I've recently started using the Ghost Whale Organizers, which come in a variety of sizes.

Special considerations for liquids

The right bag will help eliminate the stress of packing your toiletries. Whether you choose an all-in-one toiletry bag or separate pouches and small bags, look for waterproof or water-resistant bags to contain any potential spills .

Get the best bags you can afford. It will be worth the extra cost if you arrive at your destination with nothing spilled. If you use zip-lock bags, remember they can leak, so be careful.

Travel-Sized Toiletries

Opt for travel-sized containers since they don't take up a lot of space, and if you're flying, they comply with TSA's regulation of bottles no larger than 3.4 oz.

Transfer your lotions, shampoos, face wash, and other liquids into these containers, and label them clearly with a waterproof pen to avoid mix-ups. I learned this lesson after applying night cream to my hair instead of hair paste. Yep.

If you’re not concerned about ultra-light packing, my favorite way to pack my moisturizer, night cream, and makeup is with Cadence capsules . Reusable and environmentally friendly, these various-sized capsules can be transported together or separately so you can tuck them in empty spaces throughout your luggage. You can order labels for the top, or you can create your own labels.

If I'm flying, though, I prefer to travel carry-on only. So then, I use  Palette by Pak for my makeup. I ordered one with the long-handled spatula, and it’s super handy for scooping the last drops out of bottles and jars at home. I’ve been using the Palette for over a year and haven’t had any problem with leakage.

For sunscreen, moisturizer, etc., I use  GoToobs  and  GoTubbs by Humangear. There’s never been a spill with any of them, either.

Another option friends have recommended are the leak-proof Kitsch Travel Containers . The nice thing about them is they pack flat. Some have complained about them being tricky to fill, though, so you may need some patience (not one of my key strengths).

A favorite idea from some of my readers is to use old contact lens cases. Label them with permanent markers, as sunscreen, toothpaste, and hair gel can look the same after a few days on the road! And paint clear nail polish over the label so it doesn’t come off during travel.

If you’re taking travel-sized bottles or generic empty bottles and jars, consider removing the top and putting some saran wrap over them. Then, put the top on again to help prevent leakage. At least put them in a Ziploc bag in case they come open during travel.

And don’t fill any bottles all the way to the top. Changes in altitude cause changes in pressure, so you need to leave 20% or so for the liquid to expand.

Step 3: Pack Your Toiletry Bag

Now that you have your supplies ready, it's time to start organizing your toiletries.

Compartmentalize

Use the compartments and pockets in your toiletry bag or if you don't want everything in one bag, you can use pouches and mini bags. Assign specific sections or pouches for different categories of items – skin care, dental care, hair care, etc. This way, you don’t have to rummage through the entire bag to find what you need.

Layer Strategically

Place larger items at the bottom of your bag and smaller items on top . Place flat items on the bottom and against the sides if you're using an unstructured bag. This will save space and give the bag some shape. Items you’ll use more frequently, like a toothbrush and toothpaste for quick freshening up, should be easily accessible.

Label Everything

Clearly label each container with the product's name. This prevents confusion when you're reaching for an item. Yes…I’ve put moisturizer in my hair instead of hair paste, so I know what I’m talking about here!

Medications

All medications must go in your personal item, not even your carry-on bag in case you have to gate-check your carry-on at the last minute.

Keep electronics separate

Use separate bags or stuff sacks to corral your hair dryer, curling iron, electronic toothbrush, and other electronic items you might be traveling with.

Special considerations for air travel

When flying, TSA regulations come into play due to security restrictions on liquids:

• Liquids in 3-1-1:  If you're carrying liquids in your carry-on, adhere to the TSA's 3-1-1 rule : each passenger is allowed one quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag containing liquids in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. Heathrow Airport in London may be different, so check their website first if you're flying there. All other allowable liquids must go in your checked bag.
• Keep Essentials Accessible: This way, you can quickly take them out during security checks.
• Remember, there will be stores! The amount of toiletries that fit in a quart-sized bag should be sufficient for a short trip, so you won't have to worry about running out. If you're taking a long trip, use the space to pack the most important things and buy the rest at your destination.

Step 4: Regularly Re-evaluate Your Essential Toiletries

As you travel more, you'll refine your skills to pack your toiletries for travel. You'll also learn which of your favorite beauty products and other toiletries are truly essential for your comfort, and which you can leave behind for awhile. Be sure to assess your toiletry kit after each trip . Did you use all the items you packed? Were there items you wished you had brought?

Make notes on   your toiletries packing list . This feedback loop will help you optimize your toiletry packing list and organization strategy over time.

How to Pack Toiletries for Travel Summary

When packing your toiletries for travel, choose the best toiletry bag for your packing style—either an all-in-one bag or several smaller pouches. Either way, you want to have your liquids together and easily accessible when going through security.

Solid toiletries or travel-sized toiletries packed in leak-proof containers will ensure you arrive at your location with everything intact. Filling bottles to 80% capacity and using leak-proof bottles will prevent spillage. No puddles when you open your bag, no ruined clothes!

Be sure everything is labeled and in its proper place. You want to strike a balance between organizing efficiently with layers and pouches and being able to remember where things are.

With a bit of planning and attention to detail, you can master the art of organizing your toiletry bag and make your journey all the more enjoyable.

I’m hoping to travel light in a carry-on only. How should I pack my toiletries so they don’t take up too much space and weight?

One of the most common issues I see travelers encounter when they try to travel light is how to pack toiletries for carry-on. They want to take everything with them.

This is an issue I’ve personally tackled before! I made it my mission to not only choose the right clothes and shoes to downsize my packing but also do the same with my toiletries yet still able to take my favorite beauty products. Check out how I started in the video below:

There are many ways to downsize, from decanting to BIT (buying it there), to combining beauty products. Let’s break down some of  my tried-and-true strategies for how to pack toiletries for travel!

How I Downsize Toiletries for Travel

Start With a Toiletries Packing List

One of the things that I always recommend is a checklist or packing list. A list helps you brainstorm and determine everything you need to bring. A packing list helps you not forget anything once it comes time to pack.

Packing lists are important for everything you pack—from your wardrobe to your electronics to your toiletries.

The list features unique categories to help you pack for your trip efficiently. It includes all the items listed in various categories above and has spaces where you can fill in your own information:

Choose a Carry-On Toiletry Bag

A lot of readers ask me about my beauty and skincare routine, and I use quite a few products. (Feel free to read about my routine here .) However, I’m able to downsize them into travel-friendly sizes and pack them into this small toiletry bag.

Emme Petite Cosmetics and Toiletries Travel Bag

Many people have asked me what bag this is and are amazed at how small it looks, but it fits so much. The Emme toiletry bag is really compact and probably no more than 6 inches wide and 5 inches high. 

I love it because it has a couple of features that are really important to me. First, it’s small yet roomy. I can fit everything I need in it. Also, it’s very durable. Additional Tips to Help Downsize Toiletries

Run Through a List of Toiletries

I start by gathering everything I normally use, from my shampoo to makeup wipes, moisturizer, toothpaste, etc., and decide what’s necessary for a particular trip. For example, I go through my toiletry checklist and think, “What do I need for the shower?” I’ll need shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

If it’s a short trip, I won’t even bring my normal supplies, because I can use hotel-sized products that I already have. If I’m staying at an Airbnb, I’ll ask if they provide toiletries or look at their list of things they offer. 

Lastly, if I’m staying for a longer period of time, I’ll buy these supplies at my destination.

Start With a Day’s Worth of Toiletries

if I’m buying my beauty supplies for the length of my trip, I always like to start with at least one day’s worth of carry-on toiletries , including shampoo , conditioner , and shower gel. This is where I save the most weight and the most space.

Often, I even will go smaller than a travel-sized container and take a sample, which I usually get from Sephora . It’s just one-time use shampoo and conditioner, so it’s a really easy way to get started on my trip without taking up any space in my luggage. Decant Essential Toiletries

Many of us have products we can’t imagine traveling without. If they aren’t available in travel-sized containers, use reusable containers. These are awesome and allow me to take the product I want in a smaller size. 

I find one small container that will usually last me about a month. If you aren’t sure, test it out! Do a trial run before your trip to see how long a travel-sized container will last for you.

Leakproof Travel Bottles

You even can use these reusable carry-on toiletry containers on extended trips. For long periods of travel, I might buy a full-size product at my destination, use what I need, and then decant the rest into a smaller container to take with me to my next destination.

Bring Double Use Toiletries

When I’m traveling, I try to cut down on the toiletries I use by blending them. 

For example, instead of using a moisturizer and a sunscreen, I use Cetaphil’s daily moisturizer , which is SPF 50. It’s super moisturizing and has a great amount of sun protection in it, so I’ll know my skin is protected, even in really sunny and tropical climates.

These are the best face moisturizers that also double as sunscreen according to our readers.

You can do this for a lot of other products, too, such as two-in-one shampoos and conditioners, and cream blushes that can double as lip products. You could also pack even lighter with this list of solid toiletries .

Consider the Travel Toiletries Available to You

Remember, if you have a product, such as a face wash you use, and it can be purchased at a drugstore or pharmacy, consider buying it at your destination. Many common drugstore brands are available around the world. Make a toiletries shopping list to take with you, if you decide to purchase at your destination.

For example, if you wear contacts and need to carry contacts solution , you usually can buy that anywhere. Before I got LASIK, I had to carry a contact solution, and it was such a pain, so I preferred to buy it when I got to my destination.

If you do travel with liquids like this, make sure you put some plastic wrap around the lid to keep it from leaking. This is a great tip for how to pack toiletries for air travel, too!

Body moisturizer is the same—I don’t pack it, I buy it at my destination. I find something simple that gets the job done. For this, I love Cetaphil’s moisturizing lotion . It’s nothing fancy, and it’s scent-free, but it moisturizes my skin and never irritates it. It’s also easy to find when I’m on the road.

• Once you’re ready to pack your toiletry bag , think strategically about how you want to layer everything to make the most of your space. Consider the pockets and spaces in your toiletry pack.
• On the outside of my toiletry kit, I always store my makeup wipes . In one pocket, I keep a shower cap, razor, and toothbrush head, and in another pocket, I keep cotton buds.
• Next, I tackle some of the larger items, like my shampoo , conditioner , face wash , toothpaste, and shower gel. I put them first in a quart-size reusable Ziploc bag in case they leak. 
• From there, I pack my more delicate items, like my skincare products, lotions, and electric toothbrush , filling in my toiletry bag as I go.

And voila! With a few packing strategies, you can cut your toiletries in half—or more—so you’re less weighed down!

5 clear toiletry bags for travel that are TSA compliant

Thanks to being a TSA PreCheck member for nearly a decade, I can't recall the last time a TSA agent asked me to remove my toiletry bag from my carry-on when passing through security. Not having to deal with rummaging through luggage to remove your toiletries (along with electronics) is just one of the many perks of TSA PreCheck, the expedited security program.

But unfortunately, PreCheck benefits do not extend internationally. In my experience, certain airports abroad, including London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) , are much stricter in enforcing the universal quart-sized toiletry bag rule. In fact, the last time I flew from Heathrow, a security agent actually made me empty my entire quart-sized bag, which admittedly had several of the mini-sized products from the hotel I had stayed at sticking out. (In my defense, the products in question were Le Labo from the London Edition in the West End.)

Even so, I stood there and watched him put every last item back into the two plastic bags he supplied. Although I was slightly irritated during this process, it was a good reminder to travel with a compliant toiletry bag and to not let the opportunity for free La Labo result in trying to cram nine bottles into your bag at the last minute.

When traveling in Europe, for example, passengers are restricted to a one-liter transparent plastic bag for their liquids, aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, creams, gels, etc., per the European Union . Domestically, you must put your liquids in a quart-sized bag (approximately 7 x 8 inches in size, though TSA does not specify measurement requirements), with each product less than 3.4 ounces, per the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule.

Even if you are traveling abroad, all travelers departing from the U.S. must adhere to the quart-sized bag rule, which is why we've compiled this guide with some of our favorite clear TSA-compliant toiletry bags.

TPG's favorite carry-on toiletry bags

Clear Toiletry Bag, Bagsmart 3 Pack , $11.99 at Amazon

Since we love a deal here at TPG, let's start with one of the cheapest options on this list. Thanks to Bagsmart, you can purchase a three-pack of bags measuring 7.5 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches for just under $12.

"Bagsmart bags are inexpensive and have held up to my frequent use," says TPG family travel writer Tarah Chieffi, who also uses them abroad. "They are great for international travel when you often still have to remove your liquids from your luggage and put them through separately. And they come in a lot of fun colors so you can match them to your luggage."

Stasher Quart Bag, $19.99 at Stasher

Another budget-friendly option comes to us from Stasher, which I can personally attest to as having high-quality yet affordable products — I've used the brand's Pocket Bag ($7.99) to hold my headphones when traveling. Thanks to the brand's range of reusable bags which meet any size needs, it has at least two options for TSA-friendly toiletry bags, such as the signature Quart Bag, measuring 8.75 x 7.5 inches.

"I started using them as my go-to toiletry bag because they're super durable, washable, see-through (so easy to find what you need inside) and they have a little stretch, which is great when you need to cram in just one or two extra things," TPG global features managing editor Melanie Lieberman told me.

She also likes the brand's stand-up bags, such as the Stand-Up Mini Bag ($17.99, 5.5 x 7.5 inches), whose flat bottoms allow the bags to stand up on their own, a feature that is hard to find.

The Clear Pouch Set , $45 at Away

Away is known for its ubiquitous hardshell suitcases, including its top-rated carry-on, my personal favorite. Beyond suitcases, the brand has expanded into travel accessories, including its Clear Pouch Set, which in true Away style, features two TSA-approved bags, one large and one small, that are also spill-proof.

With a leather-like trim, these bags have a folded bottom that expands for extra room but still packs flat. Bottom line

Each of these toiletry bag options is TSA-compliant to meet the agency's 3-1-1 liquid rule and quart-size bag requirements, so you shouldn't have any issues using any of them, even if you are not a PreCheck member and have to remove it from your carry-on to go through TSA security.

Although you could technically use a plastic Ziploc quart bag, it's 2022, and we simply cannot be out there using single-use plastic every time we travel.

One-of-a-Kind Design

The Topo Dopp Kit is different from other toiletries bags, and that’s why we like it. It’s the only one we tested with a flat-bottomed triangular design, which helps it sit easily on small bathroom counters (which I love). It’s also one of the few (good) toiletry bags that doesn’t come with any internal organization, again, a feature we really enjoy for streamlined minimalist packing and quick use.

Having too many internal organization pouches and pockets takes away from the overall storage space of your toiletry bag. But the real problem is how “organization” leads to overpacking. Stashing a ton of “just in case” items into your toiletry kit pockets is one of the easiest ways to pack too much stuff .

The Topo dopp kit is just one big pouch for all your stuff so you can see everything at a glance. The internal water-resistant nylon lining is even a bright contrasting color (like bright green) so you can easily locate all your stuff. It’s a small detail, but a nice touch. 

Coming in at 11 inches long, this dopp kit is big enough for full-size bottles (although I don’t recommend traveling with them), and can easily handle full-size toothbrushes, electric razors, and other larger items. However, the soft shape and lack of hard edges lets it conform to most carry on sized travel backpacks .

The 1000D cordura fabric is tough enough for whatever you pack and, while not perfectly waterproof, the nylon interior and YKK zipper are super reliable. The handle loop can work for hanging this bag in a pinch, and you can customize your bag with a leather, canvas, or even ripstop nylon exterior in a variety of colors to match your swagger.

What We Like: Simple, Durable, Reliable

A Clear Winner

TSA regulations mean that you’re supposed to store all your liquids under 3.4 oz in a clear quart-sized bag that you remove for inspection. But we don’t all do it. If you’re a frequent traveler who’s sick of getting hassled because you pack a lot of toiletries, be proactive with this regulation-sized toiletry bag and breeze through security screenings.

The Lermende clear quart-size bag is the max allowable size, yet still lightweight. It’s waterproof, well-designed, and quite simply, the easiest way to travel with liquids. We liked the strong PVC construction and simple carrying loop.

It can make a great second toiletry bag for overflow items and makeup if you can’t fit all of your toiletries in one bag.

What We Like: Clear and Lightweight

What We Don’t Like:  Boxy

• Boxy. The square shape can be hard to pack in some smaller or slimmer carry on bags
• See-through. The see-through case is great for security, but you won’t have any privacy when you land, which can be annoying in hostels or shared accommodation

Not Your Average Travel Toothbrush

There’s a reason the quip toothbrush doesn’t feel like a travel toothbrush. It’s because it isn’t a normal travel toothbrush.

Unlike the flimsy folding travel toothbrushes you’re used to, the quip is a powerful, portable electric toothbrush designed for everyday use. It just also happens to be built for travel, thanks to the clever carrying case/travel case and long battery life (it’s rated to last for 3-months on a single AAA battery).

I signed up for the quip refill plan (with the metal finished brush) last year, and it’s been fantastic. The 2-minute vibrating brush timer is amazing (and it keeps me honest), and I like getting a “new” brush every three months. But the best part is how well the toothbrush travels.

I like packing my “everyday” toothbrush knowing that I don’t have to compromise while traveling. And the ability to stick the case to the mirror and have it ready in the morning is a simple thing, but instantly makes anywhere I’m staying feel more like home, especially during extended stays.

I love the metallic finish option (I have slate) ($40), but at $25, the plastic handle quip is an affordable way to see if a quip electric toothbrush is right for you.

Pro tip: Save your money and skip the quip toothpaste add-on since the tube is 4.7 oz (not TSA compliant).

What We Like: Doesn’t Feel Like a “Travel” Toothbrush

• The timer: I am a bad brusher. Or, I was before the quip. The two-minute timer helps me keep good brushing habits even on the go
• The travel case : The case transforms this sleek stylish toothbrush into a badass travel toothbrush in seconds. It lets your toothbrush breathe to dry off (which is nice), and you can attach it to a mirror (the back is sticky) to keep your toothbrush handy on longer stays
• It’s a normal toothbrush: I have one toothbrush for home and for travel, which is one less thing to think about

What We Don’t Like: A Tad Heavy

• The weight : The quip toothbrush is heavier than just about every other travel toothbrush, thanks to the battery and handle. But we’re talking a few ounces. If you’re an ultralight minimalist, obviously a little extra weight isn’t ideal, but a great toothbrush is absolutely worth a little extra weight in your toiletry bag
• Price : Yes, $25 is a bit much for a “travel” toothbrush, but it’s your teeth. You can pay a little extra to keep your teeth a little longer. 

Jason Sea Fresh Fluoride-Free Toothpaste

Everything you need for a clean mouth, and none of the harsh chemicals you don’t

Who this toothpaste is for: Minimalists, frequent travelers, and people who want a natural toothpaste that actually works

Naturally the Best

Jason sea fresh travel toothpaste is a slam dunk. It’s exactly the right size for long trips (3 oz)—not too small, not too big for the TSA. It’s also a great alternative to big name brand toothpaste packed with harsh chemicals that can actually harm your enamel.

I’m obviously not a dentist, so take any recommendations here with a grain of salt, but Jason toothpaste doesn’t have any fluoride, gluten, saccharin, artificial sweeteners (which is hilarious that some toothpaste does). It’s also free of parabens, propylene glycol, and SLS, which can cause canker sores in lots of people.

Basically, Jason toothpaste is a great natural alternative to some of the bigger name brand toothpastes with stuff that you just don’t want in your mouth. But if that’s not for you, here’s what to look for if you still prefer a “traditional” travel toothpaste:

• ADA Seal : Make sure your toothpaste is approved by the American Dental Association
• SLS-free : Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS causes your toothpaste to “foam” and it can be harmful to your mouth, causing things like cancer sores
• Avoid whiteners: Whitening agents can strip the enamel from your teeth. Some experts also claim that whitening ingredients in toothpaste aren’t in contact with your teeth long enough to do much to whiten teeth anyway
• Avoid Triclosan : This antibacterial ingredient supposedly helps prevent gingivitis, but has been largely removed from all toothpastes (although not technically banned) since it can interfere with your thyroid and cause antibiotic resistance

What We Like: Not Just Another Tiny Tube of Toothpaste

• It lasts forever: One tube of toothpaste can last for weeks
• Tastes great : The natural flavor is fantastic
• No harsh chemicals : You don’t want SLS or sweeteners in your mouth

What We Don’t Like: 

• Not much: Honestly, for the price and the quality, this product is fantastic

Natural Deodorant

Deodorant is one of the most important toiletries you can pack. Heck, it might be one of the most important things in your travel backpack , period. Make sure you get a deodorant that makes you smell great, but one that you want to use day in and day out.

The natural deodorant from Little Seed is a crowd favorite, but that’s not just because of the cute goats and marketing. This natural deodorant works using activated charcoal—not baking soda or heavy metals, like aluminum, to filter out your stank, for cleaner smelling travel days.

If you’ve ever had to toss out a favorite travel shirt due to sweat stains in the armpits, that’s likely to due the aluminum in your deodorant. Seriously.

Activated charcoal is a great “scent” but you can order test-size samples in each scent to find one that best works with your body chemistry. And test-size samples are perfect for short trips.

Try switching to a natural deodorant that not only smells great, but doesn’t use harmful chemicals or cruel production practices. You might want to transfer this deodorant from the glass container into a lighter plastic screw top container or an empty tin.

What We Like: It’s Naturally Good

• Lasts forever: A container can last for several months (I’m on month six)
• No aluminum: Don’t ruin your shirts (or your body!) with harsh chemicals and heavy metals

What We Don’t Like: It’s a Little Different

• Takes getting used to: Unlike roll on or spray deodorants, you have to spread this one by hand (or wooden applicator). It takes a little getting used to

Dr. Bronner Pure Castile All-in-One Soap Bar

Bar ($5) It’s Dr. Bronners. It’s amazing. What else do you need to know?

Who this soap is for: Long-haul travelers and people who want a natural all in one soap that actually works for all the things

The Dr. Is In (your bag)

If you don’t know about Dr. Bronner’s All-In-One soap, I don’t know who you are or how you’ve managed to avoid this fantastic product.

Dr. Bronner’s is literally the “do everything” soap since you can clean just about anything with it including your hair, skin, clothes, and I’m sure any funky mess you happen across.

I prefer the Dr. Bronner’s soap bar to the ever popular Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap simply because it lasts forever. Sure, it’s heavier than the liquid soap, and you need to carry a soap container or ziploc bag to keep it from gooping up your toiletry kit, but aside from that, you can travel with absolute confidence knowing that whatever mess you make, you can clean it up.

5 oz bars are all they sell, which can be a bit much for shorter trips. So I recommend cutting a bar in half to lighten the load. 

What We Like: One soap to rule them all

• Use it for everything: I use this for hair, body, and clothing
• That smell : That smell, tho. Mmmmmm… 

What We Don’t Like: Soap bars are a bit annoying

• Soap bars : Like any bar of soap it can be a hassle to pack. If you’re taking a short weekend trip, snag a tube of the Dr. Bronner liquid soap in a 3 oz bottle

Who this travel soap is for: Germaphobes and people that really need a little extra (lightweight) soap on the go

Forget Hand Sanitizer

Here’s the thing about travel—it’s messy. Not everywhere you go will have soap in the bathroom (or a bathroom for that matter). If you’re a germaphobe, or know you’re traveling off the grid and need to keep your hands clean, the Sea to Summit soap flakes are one of the only “just-in-case” toiletry items I heartily recommend.

The easy to use click-shut case contains 50 leaves of “soap” so it will last a while if you ration them out. Great for dirty bathrooms or sketchy places when you just need a quick wash.

Honestly, they make a whole line of travel soaps, from body wash to laundry soap, but the hand soap is the only useful item. One leaf is enough to lather you up for a quick wash, just make sure that you take out the soap leaf before you get your hands wet, or you might use the whole thing in one go. Seriously.

What We Like: Weighs Nothing

• Lightweight: This featherweight container weighs next to nothing for ultralight cleanliness on the go
• Pocket-size : You can put this in a purse, fanny pack , or your pocket without adding any bulk
• Easy to use : Just open it up, grab a flake, click the case closed, and lather up

What We Don’t Like: Not a Ton of Use

• Single use: Each soap flake is pretty small, so you’ll need multiple flakes for truly messy situations
• Don’t get wet : Not great if you’re already wet (or muddy) as the leaves will stick together if you touch them with wet hands

Harry’s Truman Shave Kit

Get an easy, accurate shave from a lightweight travel razor that costs less than $20

Who this razor is for: Minimalists, frequent business travelers , stylish budget backpackers

You need a razor if you’re traveling for more than a few days. Sure, growing a vacation mustache seems like a good idea, but you still need to trim and shape that lip caterpillar if you want to pull it off.

The choice to go with a travel (disposable) razor or an electric razor is a personal one, and has a lot to do with the frequency you need to shave (daily vs weekly), and how long you’re traveling. However, a good disposable razor with a few extra blades and a good case can last for weeks or even months.

Are disposable razors allowed in a carry on bag?

• Disposable razor w/ extra blade heads: YES
• Electric razor: YES
• Straight razor: NO
• Safety razor (the old school ones with removable blade heads): NO

The Truman travel razor from Harry’s is a solid choice that you can get cheaper than most Gilette or other disposable razors at your local drug store. Plus, the weighted core handle and rubber grip are actually a pleasure to use.

To get the most bang for your buck, skip CVS and order the Harry’s Truman Travel Kit for $30 to get a razor handle, three five-blade razor heads, 3.4 oz shaving gel (which is way better than bulky shaving foam), travel cover, and a pretty decent dopp kit bag all for the price of a 3-pack of regular blades at the store. 

What We Like: Affordability in a Travel-Sized Package

• Just the right price: For $15, you get a travel-ready razor and shaving gel that will last for weeks
• Portability : No charging or batteries required

What We Don’t Like: Not Great for Long Trips

• Still disposable : If you have to shave everyday, this isn’t a great setup for long trips, since even great disposable razors only last so long

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

The best lightweight electric travel razor for minimalists and business travelers on the go

Who this electric razor is for: Long-term travelers, minimalists, business travelers

A Reliable Shave

I don’t always use an electric razor when I travel. Mostly because they’re heavier than a disposable razor, and I don’t have to shave all that often. Plus, it’s one less thing to charge.

However, the Braun M90 travel razor has me rethinking my old-timey shave options.

This  travel-friendly, compact razor only weighs 3.2 ounces and is packed with useful features. The blade guard protects the shaving foil during travel and also locks the razor into “off” mode so it won’t turn on in your bag. And when you flip the guard down to use the razor, it turns into an extension for a better grip, which is partly why the razor is so compact.

It’s washable which makes it easy to keep clean, and the wider foil prevents you from those painful nicks and scratches you can cut with budget electric razors. There’s also a convenient sideburn trimmer (aka “mustache shaper”) that flips out from the side, which I really enjoy.

This is a thoughtful travel razor that packs a serious punch for the small size. Personally, I like that it runs on (2) AA batteries, not rechargeable USB, because you can’t always find a plug in the bathroom, and charging a razor isn’t my top priority. 

Affordable, compact, and packed with travel-friendly features—the Braun M90 is a solid travel razor for guys that just need to keep it clean on the go.

What We Like: Powerful and Portable

• Long battery life: You can run this thing for weeks on (2) AA batteries (120 hours of run time)
• No charging: Batteries mean you don’t have ever have to charge it

Yes, sunscreen is a “toiletry” item, and yes, you should use it every day.

As a former surf instructor, I’ve been applying sunscreen to my forehead, cheeks, and (pretty big) nose for decades. And I’ve always had three big problems with most sunscreens:

• They’re not travel-friendly : Liquid sunscreen can’t fly carry on  
• They’re super obvious: Most zinc sunscreen looks like you smeared your face with paint, which is fine in the surf, but not great for walking tours 
• They get in your eye : I can’t handle sunscreen that runs when you swim or sweat

• Sweat proof: You can swim, surf, and sweat in this sunscreen
• Small package: This is a face sunscreen. You can put this elsewhere, but it won’t last nearly as long or work as well
• Cost : $18 is a bit steep for a sunscreen stick, but it’s worth it

All Good Organic Zinc Sunscreen Butter

Who this sunscreen is for: Long-term active travelers and minimalists who want a little extra daily sun protection

Everyday Zinc Protection

All Good is a sunscreen company from California that’s dedicated to making the best reef safe zinc sunscreen you can buy. And they nailed it. This tiny tin of zinc has been with me on multiple adventures, and it’s still going strong.

Seriously, just a dab of zinc for my face and hands is all I typically use for long surf sessions and outdoor activities like driving my moped (on my arms and neck). It’s so effective because there’s no filler in the formula.

In fact, they only use six ingredients to make this stuff: organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic calendula flowers, organic jojoba oil, vitamin E, and 25% pure zinc oxide.

One tin will last you for months, and it’s easy to fit in the waist belt pocket of your backpack for easy use on the go. 

You have to make sure you rub this zinc in, since it doesn’t go on clear, and yes, you will have a bit of a pale tint if you really lay it on thick, but if you’re going hiking, swimming, sailing, or just out walking all day, toss this little tin in your day bag for easy effective sun protection on the go.

What We Like: Good for You & the Environment

• It lasts forever: One container can last for months (I’m on month six with half a tin to go!)
• Reef safe : Made with natural ingredients that not only keep you safe, but also the delicate aquatic life around you
• Ghostly. It can be a little pasty if you put on too much; start with just a dab, it’ll last longer
• Cost . $21 seems like a lot for sunscreen, but not when you see how long this lasts

What Not to Pack: Toiletries to Avoid

Avoid silicone travel-sized bottles.

Silicone reacts with all kinds of ingredients including alcohol and salicylic acid (which is in more than you think)

Aerosol Bottles

Aerosol gels and creams are notorious for malfunctioning, especially in pressurized cabins and flights not to mention hot bus compartments and other “non-optimal storage environments.” Avoid any pressurized cans if you can.

Anything 3.5 oz & Above

The TSA caps carry on liquids at exactly 3.4 oz (100mL). Don’t try to sneak your favorite full-size toiletries on or you might land with nothing.

Leather Dopp Kits

For some reason, bespoke leather bathroom bags have become popular. They shouldn’t be. Leather is heavy, and holds the smell of liquids and gels for longer. You can’t air out leather if something goes wrong in your toiletry bag, and honestly, leather bags are heavy and more expensive than better travel fabric alternatives like waxed canvas and ripstop nylon.

How to Pack Carry on Toiletries

You cannot just scatter your toiletries around in your carry on bag and expect to get through the TSA security checkpoint at the airport without experiencing delays and problems.

Any toiletry items that are considered a liquid under the TSA liquid rules must be placed in a one quart size bag. This is basically a toiletry bag that is both transparent and resealable plastic bag. Your liquid toiletries must go in this together with any other liquids you may be carrying.

However, you cannot pack liquid toiletries that are in a container that is larger than 3.4 ounces (100 ml) as they are not permitted through airport security at all. Note that it is the size of the container, not the amount of liquid it contains, that is important.

What this means is that you cannot take a 7-ounce bottle that only contains 3.4 ounces of liquid as this would be confiscated by security agents.

You can carry as many liquid toiletries and other liquid items that are below this size as you can pack in your quart-size bag. Only one quart-size bag containing liquids is permitted per passenger.

Toiletries that must go in a liquids bag

The following is a list of the most common toiletry items that are considered to be a liquid so must go in a liquids bag. It is not an exhaustive list so if you have any other toiletries which can either be poured or spread then they will probably also fall within the liquids rule and will also need to go in the quart-size bag.

• Deodorant /antiperspirant – this includes aerosols , roll-on and spray but not solid stick types
• Dry shampoo
• Shaving cream
• Body lotion

Toiletries that can stay in your carry on bag

You can take solid versions of most toiletries in your carry on bag without removing them or placing them in a liquids bag including:

• Solid deodorant/antiperspirant
• Solid bar soap
• Solid conditioner bars
• Solid shampoo bar
• Any other solid toiletries

How can you take full sized bottles of toiletries in carry on bags?

As you now know you cannot pack full size toiletries in your carry on bag and take them through airport security. So if that is the case, how can you actually take larger bottles of liquid toiletries on a plane?

The answer is, if you are traveling from a reasonably large airport that has stores in the lounge area after passing through the security checkpoint, you can purchase toiletries from there. Those stores are not limited to simply selling travel size products but can also sell regular size too.

Any size of toiletry you can buy in one of these stores can be taken on board the aircraft with you in your carry on bag.

How to pack toiletries in checked luggage

The checked baggage liquid toiletry rules.

Firstly, the regulations on what toiletries you can pack in your checked bag are must less restrictive than those that apply to toiletries and liquids in carry on bags.

The 3.4 ounce rule does not apply to liquids in checked bags so any liquids, including toiletries, can be larger full-size versions and not travel sizes. The one restriction that applies to aerosol toiletries is that the container cannot be larger than 18 ounces and the total no more than 70 ounces.

This is the rule on the TSA website:

“The FAA limits the total amount of restricted medicinal and toiletry articles, including aerosols, in checked baggage. The total aggregate quantity per person cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). The capacity of each container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces). See the  FAA regulations  for more information.”

Also , liquid toiletries do not have to go in a zip-lock quart bag so you can just pack them in your normal toiletries bag if you wish.

Don’t worry about your aerosols as they will not explode in checked bags .

How to pack your toiletries

The most important thing to prevent when you pack liquid toiletries is that the containers do not get squashed and the toiletries leak out.

You can try and stop this by stuffing them into shoes and other items that will protect them.

You can also pack toiletries in a rigid toiletry bag with your other toiletries kit. This will offer them some protection and also protect items outside of the toiletry bag as the bag will be quite leakproof.

Resealable sandwich bags make a great deal of sense to use too . Pack each toiletry item that could leak in individual bags, so should one leak it will not damage anything else in your bag.

Toiletries packing tips

Buy travel-size toiletries.

Some toiletry manufacturers are aware of the TSA liquid rules so manufacture small bottle versions of their products in what is referred to as travel sized bottles. These are 3.4 ounces or less in size so are permitted in carry on luggage (in your liquids bag). Hunt them out in your local store or online.

Buy refillable bottles

Decant each of your favorite liquid toiletry products into an individual refillable bottle that is designed for air travel and as they (normally) hold 3 ounces each. This way you should be able to take enough for a week-long trip if traveling with carry on only.

Buy solid equivalent toiletries

Since there are no restrictions on the size of solid toiletries you can take on a plane it makes sense to consider substituting your normal liquid toiletries if going on a trip, particularly if you are only taking hand luggage.

They are also easier to pack too and can save space, particularly if you dispose of any unnecessary packaging.

As well as soap there is a whole range of solid toiletries you can buy, some of which I had never heard of before researching this article, such as:

Share space with a partner

If you are traveling with someone, it may be that they will not be using all of the available space in their liquid bag (particularly if they are male) so you could put some of your additional toiletries that qualify as liquids in that too.

Buy toiletries at the airport

Particularly if you are flying from a larger airport, there are likely to be some stores after you pass through security where you can buy full-size toiletries. There are no restrictions on actually taking these on the flight with you if purchased after the security checkpoint.

You will probably need to use them up and perhaps throw away some that are partially used though as you will be unable to take them through security for your return flight.

Buy at your destination

Believe it or not, if you are flying to most other countries, particularly in Europe and other developed countries, they actually have these items for sale there too!

So just save weight and space in your carry on bags and buy them when you arrive.

What is the 311 rule?

The 311 rule is what the TSA refers to as the liquids rule – no larger than 3 ounces (actually 3.4), in a 1 quart liquid bag and only 1 liquid bag per passenger.

Do toiletry bags have to be clear?

A toiletry bag that is being used to take liquids through airport security must be a clear plastic bag that is resealable with a capacity of no larger than 1 quart.

Is deodorant allowed in flight?

You can take deodorant on a flight if it is no larger than 3.4 ounces (or you buy it after the security checkpoint) and you can use it during the flight.

Does stick deodorant count as a liquid?

Stick deodorant is not considered a liquid for the purposes of TSA security liquid rules so its size is not restricted and it does not have to go in a quart-size liquids bag either.

Can I take full size toothpaste on a plane?

You can take full-size toothpaste on a plane in checked bags but not in carry on as it will be larger than the maximum size of 3.4 ounces.

Is Vaseline a liquid TSA?

Vaseline does fall within the TSA’s liquids rules so to be carried through security in carry on it can only be in a container that is no larger than 3.4 ounces and must be in a toiletries bag (quart size resealable liquids bag).

Is mascara considered a liquid when flying?

As surprising as it may seem, mascara is considered a liquid under the TSA’s liquids rules so to be carried through security in carry on it can only be in a container that is no larger than 3.4 ounces and must be in a toiletries bag (quart size resealable liquids bag).

Do wipes go in liquid bag?

Wet wipes do not need to go in a liquid bag as the TSA does not consider them as being liquids even though they are wet.

Can I bring full-size shampoo in checked luggage?

You can bring a full size shampoo container in your checked luggage as the carry on liquids rules do not apply to liquids in hold baggage.

Liquids Rule

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

Inbound International Flights

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:

• The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight.
• The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
• The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

The items inside the secure, tamper-evident bags must be screened and cleared. Any item that alarms or is unable to be screened will not be permitted in your carry-on bag. We recommend packing all liquids, gels, and aerosols that are over 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your checked baggage, even if they are in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

I'm an Overpacker Who Swears by My Trunk Suitcase — Plus, 9 More Spacious Options for Month-long Trips

As a travel writer and chronic overpacker, I was beyond relieved when I first discovered that retro-inspired trunk suitcases were coming back in style. What exactly are trunk suitcases ? Before modern suitcases were a thing, travel trunks were the sturdily-constructed luggage carriers that could handle the long-haul train trips that preceded today’s speedy air travel. Trunks tend to be the large-and-in-charge improvement on the smaller suitcases that I had been struggling with for years, typically offering a bigger storage capacity with their taller and narrower constructions — which I experienced firsthand on a recent cruise . 

When my sister and I signed up for an 11-day Grand European Viking Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, we were excited about all of the unique experiences we’d have during the trip. We had also booked a few additional nights before and after the trip to do our own thing, meaning that we had to pack for 15 days of cruising, hiking, biking, exploring cities by foot, and also attending classical music performances in Vienna. We also didn’t want to have to wind up paying the sky-high laundry prices cruises are known for, so we had to bring large luggage. On the packing list? A big trunk that could accommodate shoes, sandals, books, a C-Pap machine, and two weeks' worth of clean clothes organized in packing cubes .

Let's start with my trunk suitcase of choice: The Trunk by Away. With 107 liters of packing space, this trunk is not playing around. You can fit 18 to 21 outfits in here, which is why it was perfect for the Viking River Cruise I took in Europe. Initially, I got this suitcase because my seven-year-old niece performs with a folkloric Mexican dance group and we needed something that could haul her expensive costumes to performances across the country without them getting damaged. While the suitcase works perfectly for her performances, it also comes in handy for general travel, especially when I'm transporting large and awkward items like snowshoes and bulky camping gear to and from my apartment in New York to my mom’s house in Wisconsin.

Travel + Leisure 's testing team was most impressed with how durable this Delsey Paris trunk is, especially considering that it’s on the lower-mid end of the price range. One tester noted that it “protects your belongings like a tank,” which may not be a surprise considering that the suitcase is a collaboration between Delsey and French automobile-maker, Peugeot. It’s not every day that you get automotive industry-level technology in luggage, is it?

The trunk’s two main compartments have compression straps and are deep enough that you can stack packing cubes or transport bulkier gear. The testing team also found that the trunk's wheels were very easy to spin and maneuver. It’s worth noting, however, that at nearly 12 pounds when empty, the sheer weight of the trunk could make it heavy to lift when fully loaded (also keep an eye on the total weight to avoid being charged overweight fees).

Briggs & Riley Extra-large Trunk Spinner

For those truly monumental packs, you’re going to need an enormous trunk that can fit the biggest, bulkiest, and most awkward-sized items that you can find. Enter: the Extra Large Trunk Spinner by Briggs & Riley, which can accommodate a whopping 123 liters in its colossal two compartments. The 80-20 lid and cinch-down garment panels ensure easy packing and crisp clothing, even when dealing with delicate items.

In addition to now-standard features like built-in TSA locks and smooth-spinning wheels, this premium trunk ups the ante by adding self-repairing zippers and a complimentary monogram. The three-layer Makrolon polycarbonate material is also super lightweight and scratch-resistant. Taking to the review section, a traveler said that the suitcase recently endured a 21-day trip to Europe, including six flights, five trains, and a bus. She added that “it fit a mad amount of clothes, shoes, boots, toiletries, and souvenirs; and due to it being about 3 pounds lighter than other luggage this size, it still came in underweight with the various airlines.” 

Level 8 Large Trunk Suitcase

Though most trunk suitcases are on the more expensive side, Level 8 proves that a more affordable travel trunk is still possible. The Amazon-favorite luggage brand's Large Trunk Suitcase has all of the key features, like 360-degree spinner wheels, a four-level adjustable handle, built-in TSA locks, and a roomy interior (that can accommodate 99 liters), as its pricier counterparts. The bag also comes in five colors, including a pretty frosty pink, which makes it stand out among the mostly black, blue, and beige options that will make up the majority of the bags on the carousel. 

"It's easily the best piece of luggage I have owned," an Amazon shopper raved , noting that it fits up to two weeks' worth of items and "has at least four to five different sleeves you can utilize, a few separators, and multiple straps to keep larger items like shirt, pants, and shoes in place." They even added that the outer shell "is very solid, so it could easily handle some rough handling by the airport staff or just general travel wear and tear." 

Traveler's Choice Maxporter II 30-inch Hardside Spinner Trunk

Another affordable option for a super spacious trunk is the Maxporter II by Traveler’s Choice. This 106-liter trunk features a 70-30 split, so you can fit large and bulky items in the main compartment, but it also has two removable dividers in case you want to add a bit more organizational structure in there. The spinner wheels let you easily glide around, while the protective corner guards prevent the suitcase from getting too banged up on the conveyor belt.

The suitcase's tall and narrow design was much appreciated by one Amazon shopper , who shared that it could stand up straight in his small hotel room in Japan to take up less floor space. He went on to say that the model's large packing capacity allowed him to “easily fit a full set of clothing, plus winter items (a packable shell jacket, insulated hiking-style boots, and dress clothes) in the upper zipper portion," and quipped that he could "easily blow past airline weight limits with this thing.”

Herschel Supply Co. Heritage Hardshell Large Luggage

Herschel Supply Co. may not call this a trunk suitcase, but its large, tall and narrow build definitely fits the bill. Able to accommodate 95 liters, this beautiful bag is ready for the runway — oops, we mean jetway. TSA locks, 360-degree spinner wheels, and convenient side-carrying handles check all of the basic boxes, plus the Heritage also comes with nice features like reinforced corners, interior mesh storage sleeves, and garment straps. If a white checked bag isn't your first choice, it also comes in a punchy (and almost sold out) camo print that will add flare to your travel gear. 

One Nordstrom purchaser summed up the suitcase as “sleek, stylish, and wonderful to use,” adding that “as an overpacker, this is the perfect size to feel like I have enough, but since the luggage is so lightweight, it's easy to travel with.”

Delsey Paris Cruise 3.0 Hardside Expandable Luggage Trunk

Don’t let the price tag fool you, as this affordable suitcase is one of the best trunks that T+L editors have tested for both value and durability. Its polycarbonate shell and spinner wheels showed no signs of wear and tear and it was super easy to maneuver along various surfaces. Even when fully packed (which tends to make heavy trunks even more unwieldy), this suitcase could quickly change directions with no drag, which the testing team found impressive. With a 90-liter capacity and handy features like double-spinner wheels, and three TSA combination dial locks, this bag is easy to love. What's more, its 70-30 split allows for flexible packing, and the removable mesh divider and lining (which are machine washable) are just the icing on the cake for making everything fit and look tidy. 

Its best feature, however, is Delsey’s patented Overweight Indicator, which lets you know when your luggage weighs over 48.5 pounds. Considering that airline checked baggage fees continue to climb, this handy feature could easily save you $30 to $50 per trip. In fact, when comparing it to an older version, an Amazon shopper was happy to report that "it's noticeably lighter than the other one, and even when fully packed, it was not overweight…Before, we could only pack our checked bag half-full because it would be overweight, but with this bag, it won't be such an issue." 

Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 26-inch Spinner Trunk

This splendid suitcase offers 91 liters of real estate in a modern, attractive design that holds true to the values of the original trunk — sturdy and reliable. T+L testers reviewed this trunk over the course of three months, packing in bulky and oddly shaped equipment like ski boots and helmets. Though this beautiful beast can accommodate large sports equipment, the testing editors also loved that the zippered pockets on the two-divider flaps could be used for smaller items. Additionally, they found it to be a very packing cube-friendly trunk that could easily allow the cubes to be stacked on top of each other inside the deeper compartment.

As the true test of durability is in how well a suitcase holds up during and after long trips, T+L testers were pleased to find that the tough polycarbonate construction and the trunk’s four double-spinner wheels held up remarkably well despite numerous hits and drops. This was even the case for the dreamy cream Angora color, so you don't have to worry about it getting damaged on the baggage carousel.
