As the closest city to Japan's main island of Honshu, Kitakyushu is the gateway between the two islands and is packed with sightseeing spots.

How to Get There

JR Kokura is Kitakyushu's main station and is on both local and bullet train lines.

By bullet train, Kokura is about 15 minutes from Hakata Station in Fukuoka City. From Kokura Station, local trains and buses connect to the rest of the city.

Kitakyushu is serviced internationally by air, and the airline StarFlyer is headquartered at the city's Kitakyushu Airport.

The best things to do in Kitakyushu

Which do you like better, the sea or the mountains? Kitakyushu has both!

Are you interested in Japanese history, culture, tradition, modern life, nature, economy or the environment? You can learn and experience everything in Kitakyushu! Kitakyushu is located in the northern tip of Kyushu island in Japan. Kitakyushu played a significant role in the history of Japan and supported Japan’s modernization!

We would like to share some tips with you. Check out the best things to do in Kitakyushu! Come and visit our city to explore something new with a government licensed tour guide!

1. What a stunning wisteria shower!

Admire the beauty of wisteria at Kawachi Wisteria Garden (Kawachi Fujien). If you are in Kitakyushu city from the end of April to the beginning of May, you must visit Kawachi Wisteria Garden. This garden was selected as one of the 31 most beautiful places in Japan by CNN. There are 22 kinds of wisterias and people are fascinated by their beauty every year.

Walk under 110 m long wisteria tunnels in the Kawachi garden, the gradation of colors is breathtakingly beautiful! What’s more, you can enjoy the new green leaves of 700 maple trees here during the wisteria season. Of course, don’t miss the color of maple in autumn from the middle of November to the beginning of December.

2. History as a castle town

Kokura castle is a symbol of the city, which was founded in 1602 by a feudal lord, Hosokawa Tadaoki. Kokura was a pivotal domain since it was an important transportation hub at that time.

The characteristic of the castle is that it looks like a four-story tower, but it is made up of five-floors. Unfortunately, the entire castle was destroyed in a fire in 1837. Two years later, the castle was rebuilt except for the castle tower. In 1866, the castle was burned again in a war. In 1959, just the castle tower was reconstructed with reinforced concrete. The castle is used as a museum now, where you can learn about the rich history of Kokura castle. After the Hosokawa clan was transferred to Kumamoto, new leaders, the Ogasawara clan, ruled this area for 234 years.

3. Festival and fireworks display lovers!

There are many festivals held in summer, in Kitakyushu city.

Kokura Gion Drum Festival , held in the third weekend of July, was designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset in 2019. It imparts national prosperity, bountiful harvests, prosperity for people’s descendants and sound health by beating the drum from both sides. The sound echoes throughout Kokura area.

Kurosaki Gion Yamakasa Festival is held in the third weekend of July in Kurosaki area. The nickname for Kurosaki Gion Yamakasa Festival is “Battle Floats” since the decorative floats snake in the street and spin round and round! The decorative floats are illuminated gorgeously at night and the highlight of this festival is that eight decorative floats gather on the street for a timed race at the Yamakasa competition on the last day.

Tobata Gion Oyamagasa Festival is held in the last weekend of July. Huge floats 10m tall and weigh 2.5 tons are carried through the Tobata area, changing to its form with “the float with embroidered banners” in the daytime to “Pyramids of Light” at night. It was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and an important intangible cultural folk asset of Japan.

Kukinumi Fireworks in Wakamatsu is held in the third weekend of July. More than 4,000 fireworks will fascinate you over Dokai bay. A 260m-long Niagara Falls-like fireworks sparkling down from the Wakato Bridge, is the highlight of this festival.

Wasshoi Hyakuman Summer Festival which began in 1988, is an annual summer festival held on the first weekend of August in Kokura. It is the biggest festival in the city, and festivities from each of the city’s wards are carried out, there is a children’s stage and dances are performed by locals. Ten thousand fireworks are launched on the eve of the festival at Mikuni World Stadium.

4. Looks like Treasure Boxes! “Amazing Night Views”

Kitakyushu city was selected as one of the three most beautiful night view cities in Japan. There are many viewpoints in the city. The majority of people visit only in the daytime! It’s a shame not to visit these places at nighttime too!

5. A mainstay for Japan’s modernization

Mojiko literally means Moji port, and was chosen as an important port over 130 years ago by the Meiji government. After the feudal system collapsed, Japan worked hard to catch up with western countries. Western style buildings were constructed after Japan opened the nation. For Japanese people, western style buildings at that time were a symbol of new beginning!

The reason why Mojiko was selected as an important port was that they wanted to extend a railway here and they surmised it could be an indispensable point connecting Kyushu and other places.

6. World heritage sites and great companies leading the world from Kitakyushu!

World-famous companies such as TOTO, Yaskawa Robots, Nippon Steel Corporation (former name Yahata Steel Works) and the like, have their main office in Kitakyushu city.

TOTO produces high quality sanitary ware. TOTO Toilets Museum is one of the most unique museums in Japan.

Yaskawa Robots are one of the top robotic companies in the world, selling industrial robots with high robotics technology. Here, you can visit ‘Mirai-kan’ to see futuristic robots and related parts (need a booking and a group must be more than 10 people).

Yahata Steel Works was founded in 1901 by the government, and it influenced Japan’s economy for a long time. Some facilities of Yahata steel works were designated as UNESCO World Heritage-Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.

7. Knowledge of Environmental technology and “SDGs”!

After WWII, Kitakyushu flourished as an industrial city and contributed to Japan’s modernization and rapid economic growth. However, this growth polluted the sea and the rivers at the same time. Even fish couldn’t live there, and people called it a “Dead Ocean”.

The first group who made a movement to solve this problem was a group of mothers who worried about their children’s health. A public movement and the mass media raised awareness about the environmental problem and urged the city to face the challenge of antipollution.

In the 1980’s, the environment dramatically improved thereafter. From this experience, the city is now designated as an Eco-technology city by the government. The city is selected as an SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) future city thanks to this experience as well. You can learn about this experience from study tours in the city.

8. Getting hungry? Find delicious food in a gourmet city!

Shiroya , is the most famous bakery shop in the city, selling handmade breads and sweets at reasonable prices.

Yosuko Nikuman , steamed buns with meat fillings, are very popular among locals.

Tanga Market is a typical Japanese market. There are more than 120 shops in the 180m long arcade. One of the local specials is “Nuka-daki”, which is boiled fish with paste made from rice bran and soybeans. It goes well with rice and sake!

Daigakudo café is owned by Kitakyushu University students, and they offer a unique menu called “Daigaku-bowl”. Holding your rice bowl in one hand, you can walk around the market adding only the ingredients you want to eat. You can make a custom-tailored dish in your own bowl!

Authentic Sushi restaurants . There are some authentic sushi restaurants in Kokura. Many celebrities visit Kitakyushu only for the purpose of eating sushi.

Puffer fish . Yes, Japanese people eat puffer fish! Licensed chefs dress puffer fish and make puffer fish sashimi. Fried puffer fish is popular as well. Why don’t you try it while you are in Kitakyushu?

Kakuuchi originates in the city of Kitakyushu. It refers to the liquor shop where you may drink while standing with dry snacks or handmade food. The city of Kitakyushu flourished with Yahata steel works, and Kakuuchi culture spread to the shift workers at the steel works.

The shift workers who finished their work in the morning or daytime stopped by a liquor shop to buy some drinks and they quenched their thirst at the shop before going home. Why don’t you experience the unique Kakuuchi in the city?

Tetsunabe Gyoza are dumplings with minced pork, vegetables and garlic stuffing heated on an iron pan. It originates in Yahata, Kitakyushu. The steel workers loved Tetsunabe Gyoza because it was a stamina food available at a reasonable price.

Sukesan Udon is a long standing udon noodle restaurant and loved by locals. One of the most popular kinds of udon noodles is ‘Niku&Gobo’, which is toppings of sliced sweet beef and fried burdock on the udon noodles!

9. Traditional and unique souvenir selection!

Unique souvenirs would be ‘Neji’ chocolate and ‘toilet’ chocolate . Neji is a screw. The city of Kitakyushu flourished with the steel works and some steel works facilities are designated as UNESCO world heritage sites. Screwed shaped chocolate was created to revitalize the city, and amazingly, the chocolate can screw like a real screw! Toilet chocolate is derived from TOTO company. Isn’t it interesting to eat toilet-shaped chocolate?

10. Beauty of nature! Explore Hiraodai Plateau.

Hiraodai karst plateau is located in the southeastern part of the city. A short 45 min drive takes you to a quasi-national park, called Hiraodai karst plateau. The limestones which are ubiquitous on the plateau look like a flock of sheep! There used to be a coral reef near the equator about 3 billion ago, and the limestones were moved to Kitakyushu city due to tectonic plate movement under the ocean floor.

Today’s Hiraodai Plateau was created over a long period of time. Explore the underground limestone-cave beneath the plateau which is very popular among locals. Enjoy the history of earth!

11. Come walk under the sea with us!

Japan is surrounded by the sea, and it consists of the 4 big islands of Hokkaido, the mainland called Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Kitakyushu is located in the northern tip of Kyushu. Kyushu and the mainland are separated by the Kanmon straits. There are 3 tunnels and a bridge connecting Kyushu and the mainland, and one of the tunnels is for pedestrians.

Have you ever walked under the sea? It will be a unique experience to step over the border between Fukuoka prefecture (Kyushu) and Yamaguchi prefecture (the mainland) in the tunnel!

12. Aspect as a mecca of Anime!

The city of Kitakyushu is well-known only to those in the know who are anime fans!

Good question! The city flourished as a industrial center and many people gathered there to find jobs after WWII. Many kinds of pop culture and entertainment were widespread among those people. Kitakyushu Manga Museum

The honorary director of the Museum is Reiji Matsumoto who is the famous manga artist of ‘Space Pirate Captain Harlock’ and ‘Galaxy Express 999’. This museum is designated as one of Japan’s 88 sacred places of Anime. You can learn the history of Anime and anime artists associated with Kitakyushu. Find one of your favorite manga from 50,000 manga books which someof them are translated into English and enjoy reading there! Exciting workshops are held to satisfy you.

The Stunning Views of Kitakyushu

Depart from Hiroshima on the San-yo Shinkansen bullet train and arrive at Kokura Station in the city of  Kitakyushu  in less than an hour. The fare cost is covered by a Japan Rail Pass on one of the world’s most pleasant and reliable forms of transportation . After arriving in Kokura, use the local JR train to get to Mojiko Station, close to historic Mojiko (Moji Port) .

Kitakyushu’s location made it a convenient point of trade with the Asian mainland, so the city has a long history of international relations with countries like Korea and China. The area was critical to Japan’s industrial advancements of the early 20th century, home to companies producing steel and coal. Mojiko (Moji Port) became an international trading port in the latter 19th century with the Imperial Steel Works, Japan starting operations here in Kitakyushu in 1901.

From here, board the cable car for a 1.1-kilometer 6-minute journey up Mount Sarakura, ascending 440 vertical meters. The famous master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi fought one of his best-known duels here at the Kokura domain . There is an exhibition about Miyamoto’s time in Kokura and a monument of his duel. There is even a dojo here that teaches students his two-sword style.

The view from the castle keep provides an overview of the city’s mixture of historic and modern, with the castle and lovely Katsuyama Park on the castle grounds and the recently built Riverwalk Kitakyushu just beyond. After touring the castle grounds, enjoy views of the river as you stroll through the complex’s shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Not far from the castle and Riverwalk, take a lunch break at Mojiko Retro Beer Restaurant , a microbrewery serving that has won first place in a craft beer contest in Japan. Their menu also features international favorites like sausage, pasta, fish and chips, and Kitakyushu’s famous grilled curry.

TOTO Museum

It might sound strange to include a museum of plumbing equipment on your “must-see” list, but with Japanese toilet technology all the rage globally, the TOTO Museum is a fascinating look at the history and evolution of Japanese sanitation. The museum was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company and to help visitors understand the ways TOTO is innovating products and manufacturing processes toward greater environmental sustainability. Beppu City: A Hot Springs Heaven

After enjoying the museum, head to Kokura Station to transfer to your next destination, Beppu city in neighboring Oita Prefecture, a little over an hour away on the Limited Express Sonic train. With our time in Beppu at an end, head to Beppu Station to board the Asoboy train to Kumamoto . This unique train runs on weekends and holidays and features dog-themed decor, an exclusive food menu, and, most importantly, panoramic views of the breathtaking Kyushu scenery between Beppu and Kumamoto through its oversized windows. 

Kumamoto city grew around Kumamoto Castle , which represented the supreme military power of the domain throughout the Edo Period history of Japan. The security provided by the castle enabled the city to grow large and prosperous, and Kumamoto remains the third-largest city in Kyushu even today.

On your climb to the cave, you’ll pass a hillside covered in hundreds of rakan stone statues of Buddhist disciples often carved with comical expressions. The cave is on the grounds of the ancient Unganzen-ji temple, which still exists today and maintains several artifacts related to Miyamoto Musashi, who remains as popular as ever centuries after his death.

Learn About the History and Resilience of Kumamoto Castle

Nothing represents the strength and resiliency of the people of Kumamoto than its iconic Kumamoto Castle . This historic castle’s two keeps opened in 2021 and has much to tell us about Kumamoto and its people. The castle’s strength was fully realized in 1877 during the Satsuma Rebellion when a garrison of 3,500 men inside the castle successfully repelled an assault by the 13,000-man-strong Satsuma army. As part of the most recent renovations of the castle, exhibits have also been updated with modern technology, including projection mapping and multilingual apps to make the castle’s history more accessible.

Kitakyushu City is by the Kanmon Strait , which goes from Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Kyushu . The city developed as it was a crossroad for transportation due to its proximity to the Korean Peninsula and China.

Various industries have thrived in Kitakyushu for many years. As such, much historic architecture still remains. Kitakyushu is also located near regions boasting beautiful nature.

Kitakyushu City faces the Japan Sea to the north and the Seto Inland Sea to the east.

The areas surrounding Kitakyushu are filled with historic cultural assets. Four facilities related to Yahata Steel Works, a steel company once located in Kitakyushu City, and the neighboring Nakama City, have been registered as a World Heritage Sites as Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution .

Various enterprises, such as TOTO Ltd., famous for its toilet Washlet, and Yaskawa Electric Corporation, the fourth-largest robotics company in the world, are headquartered in Kitakyushu.

Let's take a look at eight locations in Kitakyushu, an industrial city with a rich cultural history.

1. Walk Through a Flower Tunnel at Kawachi Wisteria Garden

In 2012, Kawachi Wisteria Garden was chosen as one of the 10 Beautiful Places in the World That Actually Exist by a travel website based outside of Japan. It was also on the list of Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places broadcasted by American CNN 2015.

Many tourists from all over the world come to Kawachi Wisteria Garden to view the beautiful wisteria trellis, which blooms from mid-April to mid-May, depending on the weather.

The size of the garden is approximately 10,000 square meters, with 22 types of wisteria flowers welcoming the visitors. The flowers bloom during the Japanese golden week holidays in early May. Currently, advanced reservations are required for the tickets if you want to visit during the golden week period, which can made at convenience stores in Japan beforehand.

Visitors outside of Japan can purchase tickets at JAPANiCAN beginning in early April. The price differs according to the blooming of the flowers, so be sure to check the website.

Wisteria is in season from mid-April to Mid-May, and after this the garden closes temporarily. It reopens starting mid-November to early December, which is the season for the autumn leaves .

2. Stroll Around Mojiko Retro

Mojiko , or Moji Port, prospered as a port town in early 20th century. Along with Kobe and Yokohama , Moji was one of the three major ports in Japan, playing an important role in the international trade.

There are many architectures at Mojiko built in that period. The whole area has been turned into Mojiko Retro , a popular sightseeing spot in Kyushu. You can take a walk around the area, but for an in-depth experience, you can also ride in a rickshaw . 3. Climb up Kokura Castle's Tower

Kokura Castle is located a twenty-minute walk from JR Kokura Station.

The castle was built by Tadaoki Hosokawa in 1602. It is constructed in karazukuri style , and the fifth floor is larger than the fourth floor, which was especially rare at the time. The current tenshukaku, or castle tower, was rebuilt in 1959 based on the strong wishes of Kitakyushu City citizens. The interior is used as an exhibition space displaying historical materials, and also as an observation deck offering an aerial view of the Kokura area. Kokura Castle is also a popular spot to view the sakura (cherry blossoms) in spring.

4. Try a Tasty Daigakudon Bowl at Tanga Ichiba

Tanga Ichiba is called the kitchen of Kitakyushu, and has a history of more than one hundred years. About 120 stores, which handles local seafood, vegetables and delicatessen, are lined up inside this traditional ichiba (market).

Visitors should try the nukamiso daki , a Kokura dish consisting of sardine and mackerel cooked with nukamiso (*2). It is filled with umami (a sweet and salty flavor) and goes very well with rice. Nukamiso daki can be purchased at various stores in Tanga Ichiba.

The Daigaku don , a type of rice bowl, has been attracting attention recently at this market. Visitors first buy a bowl of rice at Daigakudo, a restaurant located inside the market, for 200 yen. After obtaining rice, they visit the other stores to purchase toppings, return to Daigakudo, and eat.

There are a wide variety of dishes to choose from, such as the aforementioned nukamiso daki, sashimi and yakitori . The price varies according to each establishment, but most dishes cost only a few hundred yen . Daigaku don has become a specialty of Tanga Ichiba, providing the opportunity for guests to visit various stores in the market and enjoy a delicious meal.

5. Encounter Japanese Manga at Kitakyushu Manga Museum

Manga is one aspect representative of Japanese culture. While there are many museums and libraries related to manga, Kitakyushu Manga Museum is a facility that focuses not only on reading manga, but also on studying and education.

The honorary director of the museum is Leiji Matsumoto , author of "Galaxy Express 999" and "Space Battleship Yamato." His works are also displayed in the museum, allowing visitors to learn about his visions.

6. Bask in the Great Outdoors at Hiraodai

To arrive at Hiraodai from Kokura Station, it is a thirty-minute train ride on the JR Hitahikosan Line to Ishiharamachi Station, plus a fifteen-minute car ride away from Ishiharamachi Station.

This is one of the three major karst sites in Japan , a site with limestone deposits. It is also designated as a natural monument, semi-national park and a prefectural natural park. The rich natural environment in Hiraodai is so beautiful, making it hard to believe it's part of Kitakyushu City.

There are more than 200 limestone caves in the area. Visitors can walk into Senbutsu Cave , a natural monument designated by the Japanese government without any special equipment, and have fun trekking along a shallow creek.

TOTO celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017, and the TOTO Museum was built on the company grounds in 2015 to commemorate the anniversary.

The museum displays information on the company's history, its role in the development of plumbing equipment, and its craftsmanship. At this museum, visitors can learn about the change in Japanese society through the evolution of TOTO products.

8. Savor Local Kitakyushu Cuisine

We suggest trying the yaki udon , a dish of stir-fried pork, vegetables and noodles seasoned with Worcestershire sauce or shoyu (soy sauce). Although the dish now can be eaten throughout Japan, it is thought that this dish originated in Kokura, Kitakyushu.

After World War II, udon (wheat noodles) were used, due to a shortage of noodles typically used for yaki soba (stir-fried noodles).

Daruma Doh created this recipe and is still in business today in Kokura.

Moji Port prospered from international trade starting in the Meiji to the early Showa era. There were many restaurants serving Western-style dishes in the area, creating unique cuisine that mixes Western and Eastern cultures.

Yaki curry is thought to have been created at Moji Port during this period.

This is a variation on curry rice, baked in an oven with cheese and eggs on top. There are many restaurants in the Mojiko Retro area serving this, so be sure not to miss it.

Stay for a Day or Two in Kitakyushu

Most of the spots mentioned in this article, except the Kawachi Wisteria Garden and Hiraodai , both located in suburban areas, can be visited in a day .

If you plan to see the suburbs, or travel to Fukuoka and Hakata , reachable in twenty minutes using the Shinkansen, spend at least one night in the area.

Spring and Summer are the Best Seasons Visiting

Those who plan to visit Kawachi Wisteria Garden should do so from mid-April to mid-May , depending on how the flowers are blooming.

There are many events during spring and summer , such as the the Kokura Castle Sakura Festival and Kokura Gion Daiko . Visitors will enjoy the festive atmosphere during this period. The Senbutsu Cave, due to its cool temperatures, attracts many visitors in summer .

How to Get to Kokura from Hakata

Via shinkansen or jr train.

Kokura Station in Kitakyushu is the next stop after Hakata Station on the Shinkansen (bullet train). The one-way fare for a non-reserved seat is 3,670 yen. The train ride takes only fifteen minutes, so those who want to save time should take this route.

The train ride on the JR limited express Sonic takes about forty minutes and costs 2,360 yen for a one-way fare.

If you are using JR trains or the Shinkansen to travel around Kyushu and the rest of Japan, it is highly recommended to utilize a Japan Rail Pass . For those just traveling around Kyushu, the Kyushu JR Pass is a great deal for unlimited transportation throughout the region.

Highway Bus

Highway buses depart from the Tenjin area in Fukuoka, Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport. The bus ride from Tenjin/Hakata to Kokura Station takes about an hour and a half, and an hour and 45 minutes from Fukuoka Airport International Terminal.

The one-way fare is 1,150 yen from Tenjin/Hakata, and 1,260 yen from Fukuoka Airport. More than 120 buses run every day at fifty- to sixty-minute intervals. Reservations are not required.

There are direct flights from Tokyo and various cities in Asia, including Busan, Seoul, Dalian, Xiangyang, and Taipei to Kitakyushu Airport . For details, please check this official site .

Things to see and do in kitakyushu.

Kitakyushu is a large metropolis on the northern tip of Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Kita-kyushu covers an area of more than 483 square kilometers and has a population of more than 1 million.

Kitakyushu was formed in 1963 by merging the towns of Moji, Kokura , Tobata, Yahata with its main attraction of Space World (closed in 2018) and Wakamatsu.

Kitakyushu was the intended target of the second A-bomb in World War II but bad weather and smoke screens diverted the attack to Nagasaki .

Kitakyushu is the largest port in Kyushu, Shikoku, and the Chugoku region.

Known primarily as an industrial area, Kitakyushu was once among the most polluted places in Japan but is a now a government designated "Eco Model City".

For the visitor the areas of most interest are Kokura, Mojiko , Yahata/Space World, and Shimonoseki , across the straits in Yamaguchi Prefecture .

Kokura Castle , the only castle left standing in Fukuoka Prefecture , was first built in 1602 by Hosokawa Tadaoki and completed six years later. Kokura castle was destroyed by fire in 1837, with parts of it rebuilt by 1839.

Overshadowing the castle is the large Riverwalk Kitakyushu , a shopping and entertainment complex with a multiplex cinema, a food court, the Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center (Tel: 093 562 2655) and a branch of the main Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art (Tel: 093 882 7777). The Riverwalk Kitakyushu design was undertaken by the same Jon Jerde-led architectural team who built the similar multi-use Canal City in Fukuoka .

There are numerous local festivals held throughout the year in the Kitakyushu area but the most popular are the three Gion Matsuri held every July involving huge floats in the wards of Tobata, Kurosaki, and Kokura.

The biggest of these is the Tobata one. The biggest festival in Kitakyushu is the Wasshoi Hyakuman Natsu Matsuri held in early August.

This is a modern festival created to celebrate the creation of Kitakyushu and it features elements from the other traditional festivals as well as a massive yosakoi dance parade and a giant fireworks display.

The main Tourist Information Center for Kitakyushu is located within the concourse at Kokura Station.

Kitakyushu Access - Getting To Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu Airport is a new airport built on an an artificial island and is unusual in that it operates 24 hours a day. Several airlines run scheduled flights to and from Tokyo Haneda Airport, but Fukuoka Airport is less than 30 minutes away by train and has flights from many more domestic and international airports.

Kokura is the first station of the Sanyo Shinkansen in Kyushu and all trains stop here. It takes less than 5 hours from Tokyo , 3 hours from Nagoya , and a little over 2 hours from Osaka. The newly opened Kyushu Shinkansen connects to Kumamoto in less than an hour and  Kagoshima in just over 100 minutes. From Kokura take the Sonic Limited express to Kunisaki , Oita & Beppu .

The Sanyo Line runs a fast shuttle to and from Shimonoseki. The Kagoshima Line and the Nippo Line connect to all areas of Kyushu. Within Kitakyushu the Monorail runs about 9 km from Kokura Station to Kokura Minami.

Kitakyushu is served by several long distance domestic car ferries . A daily ferry from Tokyo stops at Tokushima on Shikoku, There are several ferries from Osaka and one from  Kobe , and a direct ferry from Matsuyama on Shikoku. There are also small passenger ferries across the narrow straits to Shimonoseki and also to some smaller nearby islands. There is a high-speed speed ferry to Ulsan in Korea.

5 Days in Kyushu: A Guide to Exploring Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Kagoshima

Day 1: Kitakyushu

The gateway to Kyushu, Kitakyushu lies on the northernmost coast and has long been a hub for international and domestic trade. Hit this city for beautiful coastal views, historic buildings and exceedingly fresh seafood.

9:20 am – Arrival in Kyushu

Get an early start by taking a 7:40am flight from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Kitakyushu Airport. Take the airport bus directly to Kokura – a short 30-minute journey – on one of several departures to this old castle town within Kitakyushu city.

11am – True Japanese Tradition

Dive into the region’s history at Kokura Castle, which gives insight into the region’s illustrious past as well as a panoramic view of the area’s present. Make the most of your visit by booking a tea ceremony experience at the Kokura Castle Japanese Garden. (Note that group reservations must be made in advance by telephone at 093-582-2747.)

1pm – Lunch at a Local Market

Wander over to charming Tanga Ichiba, a bustling local market that’s nicknamed the Kitchen of Kitakyushu. It retains a nostalgic postwar feel and is known for its fresh and pickled fish. Its colorful atmosphere and tantalizing aromas make it a great pitstop on your trip. Rub shoulders with locals as they shop for groceries and their favorite foods such as nukadaki (sardines boiled in rice-bran paste), then stop by one of the many eateries along the arcade for lunch. Here you’ll find a selection of local specialties, including sushi, udon and soba noodles, tempura, daigakudon and more.  

2pm – A Historic Harbor

After lunch, head to Moji Port, which opened its doors to international trade in 1889. Beautiful brick buildings that were then the epitome of modernity remain well-preserved and give the area a comfortable retro feel. Grab a map of historic buildings at the newly refurbished Mojiko Station, then head out on a historic city walk. Highlights include the former Moji Mitsui Club, where Albert Einstein and his wife stayed on a visit in 1922, the stunning Sankiro restaurant, and the Dalian Friendship Memorial. 4pm – On a Border Under Water

For an underwater thrill, visit the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel next to Moji Port. It connects Kyushu to the main island of Honshu underneath the Kanmon Strait. Straddle the border – marked clearly in the tunnel – to stand in two prefectures at once. The tunnel is 780 meters long and takes about 15 minutes to cross over to Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi. Best of all, it’s completely free.

5:30pm – Bolt Down Some Baked Curry

Tuck into an early dinner of one of Moji Port’s most famous dishes: baked curry. There are more than 20 eateries to choose from, many of which offer a broad selection of curries that you can pair with award-winning local craft beers.

7pm – All Aboard!

It wouldn’t be a visit to a port city without a trip out on the water. We recommend a short cruise to enjoy views of Kitakyushu’s illuminated factories from the ocean. Kitakyushu is one of Japan’s four main industrial areas and has contributed greatly to the development of the country’s modern industry. Look out for the beautifully lit steel mill and chemical plant, located on the stretch of coastline between Kanmon Strait and Dokai Bay.

9pm – Moji Port By Night

End your first day in Kyushu at Bar Tempo, with its deep red interior and view over the sparkling waters of the port. Enjoy a selection of Japanese and international whiskies, local brews and original cocktails before turning in for the night.

Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan’s four main islands and though it’s one of the least explored, it has a lot to offer the intrepid traveler. Visit four of Kyushu’s most fascinating cities in five days to get a taste of this southwestern island paradise.

Day 2: Kitakyushu and Fukuoka

10am – toilet tour.

Start your morning by going down the drain at Japan’s most famous toilet maker TOTO’s own museum, TOTO Museum. The company has been at the forefront of Japan’s famously high-tech toilets since its foundation in 1917, and this is the place to learn all you could ever need to know about potties and related products.

11:30am – Arty Afternoon

Designed by Kyushu-born architect Arata Isozaki, Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art is a unique structure located on top of a hill, offering views of the city and the ocean beyond. The museum boasts a collection of more than 7,000 artworks, and the surrounding Bijutsu no Mori Park showcases a number of sculptures scattered across the grounds. Grab a bite at Cafe Musée and shop around for souvenirs before heading south to your next destination: Fukuoka city.

As Kyushu’s largest city and Fukuoka Prefecture’s capital, Fukuoka has a burgeoning startup culture and a vibrant nightlife. Originally two separate cities on opposite sides of the Naka River, Hakata and Fukuoka merged in 1889 and the contrasts between the areas are still clearly visible today.

1:30pm – Historical Hakata

Travel back in time in Hakata Old Town, an area that is littered with temples and retains its traditional charm. Wander the streets and alleyways to get a taste of the past and find a slew of hidden photo spots. Tochoji Temple is one of these. It was founded in 806 and is the head temple of the Buddhist Shingon sect – and it is a treasure trove of new and old points of interest. Its bright vermillion five-storied pagoda almost seems to glow against a blue-sky backdrop. The Fukuoka Daibutsu near the entrance to the main temple building was completed as recently as 1992 after four years of work, and is tucked away in the Great Buddha Hall.

Next, head to Kushida Shrine, a compact shrine complex that is bursting at the seams with fascinating cultural insights. Here you’ll find a yamakasa festival float on display, otherwise seen in action in the summer at the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival. Before leaving, test your strength with the lifting stone on display. Several sumo wrestlers, including the record-breaking Hakuho Sho, have proven their power to the gods by carrying one of these rocks here. Drop by the lively Kawabata-dori shopping street adjacent to the shrine for an afternoon coffee and a look at daily life in Fukuoka city.

6pm – Get to Know the Locals

Fukuoka is famous for its night street stalls – especially in the Tenjin area. Here locals and tourists alike gather to eat, talk and drink, many wandering from stall to stall and sampling dishes instead of staying put all evening. Other local haunts include tachinomi (standing bars) and the custom of kakuuchi (drinking nihonshu at a sake store rather than at a restaurant) is becoming an increasingly popular pastime.

Explore the back alleys and narrow streets for charming hole-in-the-wall bars to get a vibe of the city. For creative seafood nibbles, an extensive selection of Kyushu’s distilled spirit, shochu, as well as wine and local craft beers, head to the Daimyou Akasaka area. Here, you’ll find plenty of popular standing bars and even a few venues offering live music.

Day 3: Fukula and Kumamoto

10am – a one-stop cultural spot.

No matter what kind of activities you enjoy, you’ll find something to pique your interest at Fukuoka’s biggest green space, Ohori Park, and the adjacent Maizuru Park. The park area was once a part of the moat for Fukuoka Castle and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals. While away a few hours here at one of the cafés, playgrounds or walking courses if you want to take it easy. If you’re a history buff, head to the Fukuoka Castle ruins, where a virtual reality experience brings old stones back to life.

The Fukuoka Art Museum houses contemporary art by Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and other acclaimed names. The Ohori Park Japanese Garden is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city and is stunning year-round. If you’re here on the first or third Tuesday of the month, you can drop by the teahouse (usually available by reservation only) for a reasonably priced mini matcha green tea and confectionary set. For an interactive and intergalactic experience, head to the Fukuoka City Science Museum, which offers a closer look at the universe through the museum’s planetarium dome.

12pm – Ramen Time

Chow down on Kyushu’s famous tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen. This specialty dish originates in Fukuoka so you can’t throw a stone without hitting a top-notch ramen joint. Whether it’s a tiny hole-in-the-wall or world-famous chain restaurant, each place has its own special recipe so it’s almost worth hitting two or three different eateries if your stomach can handle it.

Now that you’ve sampled some of Fukuoka’s finest offerings, it’s time to head to a new city and a new prefecture…

Kumamoto city is a sprawling, modern place with one clear central point: Kumamoto Castle. Considered one of Japan’s three premier castles, this structure and its grounds create an awe-inspiring presence, and the samurai spirit here remains strong.

2pm – Tour a Samurai Abode

Though Kumamoto Castle was severely damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, it is undergoing reconstruction and is set to be completed in approximately 20 years’ time. Many inhabitants feel that the city cannot be considered fully recovered from the earthquake until the castle is properly restored. This will take time as workers are using old photos and documents together with modern technology to faithfully restore the castle.

Take a guided tour to learn about the castle, its samurai legacy and the reconstruction work. Book in advance at the Kumamoto Volunteer English Tour Guides website ( www.k-yokatoko.com/english.html ). Note that some areas are still not open to the public but there will be special viewings (9am to 5pm) on Sundays and national holidays from October 5, and on Saturdays only during the Rugby World Cup (October 5 to 12) and the Women’s Handball World Championship (November 30 to December 12). It will open on weekdays (1pm-5pm) from October 5 to 14 as part of the Kumamoto Castle Dai-Tenshu Facade Restoration Commemorative Week but visitors will only be able to enter special viewing areas.  

3:30pm – A Taste of History

For one of the best selections of Kumamoto’s specialties, souvenirs and snacks, look no further than Sakuranobaba Johsaien. It is located at the foot of Kumamoto Castle and is easy to access from the castle grounds either on foot or by free shuttle bus. Here you’ll get further insight into Kumamoto’s illustrious samurai history, culture and cuisine in one convenient location. For an in-depth exploration of the past, check out Wakuwakuza’s virtual reality exhibits, plays and live camera feeds of the Kumamoto Castle reconstruction work. You can also dress up in kimono or transform into a ninja or samurai and parade the traditional shopping arcade.

6:30pm – A Soak in Hot Springs

Now that you’re a few days into your trip, it’s time to relax and take it easy. Head to Ueki Onsen, a hot spring resort inside the Kumamoto city limits. Despite its city address, you’ll find rice paddies, a winding river and a sense of serenity in this perfect hot spring getaway. Ueki Onsen has more than 10 traditional inns and hotels to choose from, but you needn’t choose just one. Get a bathing coupon set and make your way around the various hotels, trying a bath at each one. The waters here are low in alkali, which is purported to be good for the skin.

Retire at your chosen inn for the night and enjoy the ultimate Japanese omotenashi (traditional hospitality) with a traditional multicourse kaiseki meal before bed. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try a bite of basashi (raw horse meat), a local Kumamoto specialty.

Day 4: Kumamoto and Kagoshima

Start your morning with a soak in a hot spring to make the most of Ueki Onsen’s relaxing vibe before checking out and heading back into Kumamoto’s busy city center.

10am – Shopping Heaven

Now that you’re back in the heart of Kumamoto city, it’s time to explore one of its most famous shopping streets: Shimo-tori Shopping Street. You’ll find anything and everything you may need, and it’s a great place to people watch as locals go about their business.

12pm – Kumamoto Magic

Scour the streets around Shimotori Shopping Street and beyond to find a spot for lunch before moving on to the next city. While there are plenty of mouthwatering dishes available, we recommend trying Kumamoto Ramen, a local specialty bursting with fragrant garlic in multiple forms for a pungent but delicious experience. Karashi renkon and hitomoji no guruguru are two excellent side dishes usually found in home kitchens, but often available at restaurants as well. Karashi renkon is a boiled lotus root filled with Japanese mustard and miso, then fried in batter. Hitomoji no guruguru consists of boiled green onions tied into knots and covered with a tart miso and mustard sauce. For something a little milder, try dagojiru, a mild miso soup with flat dumplings and brimming with fresh vegetables.

Hop on the shinkansen to head to the final city and prefecture on your trip. It only takes approximately 45 minutes from Kumamoto to Kagoshima – you’ll be in Kyushu’s southernmost prefecture before you know it.

Another notable region in Japan’s samurai history, Kagoshima city is located in what used to be known as the Satsuma Domain. The area played a vital role in moving Japan towards modernity and was ruled by the Shimadzu family, whose influence is still visible today at the breathtaking Sengan-en garden. On the peninsula across the bay from this well-curated space, you’ll find Sakurajima, an active volcano that towers over the city.

1:30pm – Ascend an Active Volcano

Take a ferry across the bay to explore Sakurajima, one of Kagoshima city’s most notable symbols. This active volcano – which sometimes erupts multiple times a day – stands at 1,117m high and occasionally sends up puffs of ash into the air. There are several observation decks around the Sakurajima peninsula so you can get a closer look at this amazing force of nature. The Sakurajima Visitor Center’s mini museum showcases facts about the volcano then and now, including diagrams of the 1914 eruption that was so powerful it made the former volcanic island of Sakurajima into the peninsula it is today. Whether you prefer to see it up close and personal or you are content to see it from afar, Sakurajima is a must for any visitor to Kagoshima.

5:30pm – Kyushu Spirits and Soul Food

Head back into Kagoshima’s city center for dinner at Kagomma Furusato Yataimura to sample Kagoshima specialties and meet some locals from the area. Opened in 2012, this village of approximately 25 bars and eateries is a compact location and the perfect starting point to explore the region’s delights. Here you’ll find a thrilling selection of Kyushu’s famous spirit, shochu, rare delicacies such as raw chicken and unagi, as well as standard items such as ramen, tempura and skewered dishes galore.

10pm – Bed and Bath Time

For a peaceful night’s slumber, scale the Shiroyama Hill to reach Shiroyama Hotel Kagoshima. At 108m in height, the hotel looks over the city and across Kinko Bay to Sakurajima, offering panoramic views both day and night. The best view is found from the open-air hot spring baths (note that people with tattoos are not permitted to enter the shared baths).

Day 5: Kagoshima

10am – samurai gardens.

The Shimadzu clan was one of the most powerful samurai families in Japan at one point and has owned Sengan-en, one of the most stunning gardens in Kyushu, for over three centuries. The gardens are vast and a joy to explore and offer multiple views of Sakurajima. Before heading out, take a tour around the house – a central location where state guests and foreign dignitaries were received in the 19th and 20th centuries. Wander up to the hiking trail towards the back of the garden to immerse yourself in its tranquility. You’ll be rewarded with a view over a beautiful waterfall and a commanding view of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima for your efforts.

Back in the main area of the garden you can try on authentic replica samurai armor (make sure to reserve at least three days in advance) for an unforgettable photo opportunity with Sakurajima as a backdrop. The garden also has several eateries and plenty of options for high-quality handcrafted souvenirs. Drop by next door to the Satsuma Kiriko Glassworks to marvel over master craftsmen cutting glass with ultimate precision, and skip into Shoko Shuseikan Museum to learn more about the Shimadzu family’s 800-year history.

12pm – Perfect Pork

Kagoshima is famous for its black pork, known as kurobuta. It’s tender, rich in protein and vitamin B, and has an unrivaled natural sweetness due to the pigs being raised on sweet potatoes much of the year. It is often served either as tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlets) or shabu shabu (sliced into thin strips and dipped into a bubbling broth). Everyone has their favorite way to eat it, but you can’t go wrong with either of these two methods. There are excellent places to enjoy kurobuta across Kagoshima city, but Ichinisan is a guaranteed hit. Sure to satisfy any appetite, Ichinisan has a range of reasonably priced lunch sets ranging from lighter tofu-focused meals to larger portions for those with bigger appetites.

After spending five days and four nights exploring the southern island of Kyushu, it’s time to head back to Tokyo. Though Kyushu may feel like a whole world away, it takes less than two hours to fly there from Tokyo – a very doable distance for those who decide on a return visit.

Kitakyushu: A Guide to the City’s Attractions and Must-Try Foods!

Kitakyushu City is located in the northern region of Fukuoka Prefecture , at the northernmost tip of Kyushu, and serves as a junction with Honshu across the Kanmon Straits. Located less than 20 minutes by bullet train from Fukuoka City , the gateway to Asia, Kitakyushu boasts a wealth of attractions, including Kokura Castle, Mojiko Retro District, Hiraodai (one of Japan’s three major karst plateaus), and the Sarakurayama Observatory (with a panoramic view of over 200 degrees). It also provides a range of delectable mountain and seafood delicacies. Kitakyushu City serves as an excellent hub for sightseeing excursions, offering convenient access to the highly sought-after destinations of Yufuin and Beppu .

Kokura Castle

The Exhibition Hall inside Kokura Castle Tower was renovated and reopened in March 2019. There is also a stunning Japanese Garden next to the castle, where you can immerse yourself in all things Japanese culture, including traditional customs and tea ceremonies.

Retro Building Cluster (Formerly the Osaka Shosen)

Mojiko, or Moji Port, has flourished as an international trade port since the Meiji era. Take a walk through Mojiko’s history by visiting the former Moji Mitsui Club , Osaka Shosen and Moji Customs House , which are all still standing and look just the same as they did in the past! From the Mojiko Retro View Lounge, you can see the Kanmon Straits in one stunning sweep. Spend a day exploring the onsite souvenir and variety shops, and enjoy the restaurants and cafes for their tasty sweets, craft beer, and baked curry.

Mt. Sarakura

Chosen as one of Japan’s new “Three Most Spectacular Night Views,” Mt. Sarakura provides a majestic vantage point from which to appreciate the glimmering city lights that symbolize Kitakyushu City. Take a ride on the Sarakurayama cable car or the monorail if you wish to experience this fantastic scenery on a whole new level.

Kanmon Tunnel Footpath

A rare, 780-meter-long undersea tunnel provides a unique footpath connecting Honshu Island and Kyushu Island. In fact, the prefectural border is also inside the tunnel and serves as a very popular photo spot!

Kawachi Fujien (Wisteria Garden)

Kawachi Fujien , or Wisteria Garden, was chosen as one of Japan’s “31 Most Beautiful Places” by CNN (USA). An incredible variety of 22 different types of Wisterias bloom in here in the spring and more than 700 colorful trees fill the garden with crimson foliage in the fall.

Must-Try Foods:

As Kitakyushu City is surrounded by a beautiful and clean ocean, there is a rich supply of fresh seafood. Restaurants serve original Kyushu-style sushi, unique from that which is found in Tokyo or other mainland cities. Some local restaurants have even been reviewed as serving some of Japan’s tastiest sushi!

Yahata Gyoza

Gyoza was developed as a stamina-boosting food for local steelworkers. The unique Yahata style, as found in Kitakyushu City, includes a citron and pepper condiment. The true charm of Yahata gyoza, however, is in the wide variety of cooking methods. Such cooking methods include homestyle, mom’s recipe, as well as the professional, which uses iron pans.

Kokura Nukadaki

Nukadaki is a local dish from Kokura’s castle town, dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868). The traditional version consists of mackerel or sardines boiled with highly nutritious nukamiso, a rice bran paste that has been pickled in salt. Locals usually have this dish with rice, or even liquor, as it is rich in umami. More recently, local souvenir shops have begun producing Nukdaki snacks, bringing this historical flavor into the modern era.

Many original Yaki Udon recipes can be enjoyed across a variety of restaurants centered in the Kokura area. The local style of Yaki Udon is unique in that it maintains the texture of dry noodles where the surface is crispy, but with a soft, doughy texture inside. To achieve this, and to enrich the flavor, a splash of rice wine is added to the oil right before the noodles are done frying.

The local style of Yaki Curry in Kitakyushu City is topped with toasted cheese and a half-boiled egg. Many restaurants around the Mojiko area serve their own unique take on this dish, try a few to see which one you like best!

A visit to Kitakyushu City provides travelers with a one-of-a-kind Japanese experience, from sites of historical importance to local versions of some of Japan’s most well-known foods. Bursting with color from cherry blossoms in the spring to rich foliage in the fall, Kitakyushu makes for a fantastic day trip from Fukoka any time of the year!

Kitakyushu: Kyushu's Northern Port City

As the hub between Kyushu and Honshu, Kitakyushu has become one of Japan's busiest ports and most important international cities. The surrounding areas are filled with diverse geographic locations from underground caves to highland plateaus. Kitakyushu is also home to several of Kyushu's most popular historical landmarks and museums.

Kitakyūshū (北九州) is a large city in Fukuoka prefecture on the island of Kyushu , Japan . Together with Shimonoseki it is part of the Kanmon Straits area. In terms of area it is the largest city in Kyushu, though Fukuoka has the bigger population. The population of Kitakyushu is about one million (or 1.3 million including Shimonoseki). Kitakyushu was created in 1963 from the five smaller cities of Kokura (小倉), Moji (門司), Tobata (戸畑), Wakamatsu (若松) and Yahata (八幡), and it retains this sense of being a country area with much diversity and beautiful nature, despite its reputation as a steel town.

Understand [ edit ]

Kokura, the heart of Kitakyushu, is an ancient feudal castle town guarding the Straits of Shimonoseki. Kokura was supposed to be the target of the second nuclear bomb in World War II. However, it was cloudy on the day of the attack and the plane diverted to Nagasaki instead.

The modern city of Kitakyushu dates back only to 1963, when the cities of Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata and Wakamatsu were merged by administrative fiat.

Districts [ edit ]

• Moji is the city's most touristic ward due to its charming historical center, containing several buildings from end of 19th-early 20th centuries. Offers also great views of the imponent Kanmonkyo Bridge leading to Shimonoseki
• Kokura is Kitakyushu's main transport, shopping and nightlife hub, also containing a nice riverside area where the Kokura castle is located
• Tobata is a more suburban and industrial area, hosting cheap, good-quality restaurants and the most important cultural event of the city, the Tobata Gion Yamagasa festival
• Yahata contains a former industrial wasteland which has been completely redeveloped, now containing excellent museums.
• Wakamatsu , in an island linked to the continent by the "unnecessarily huge" Wakato bridge, is popular among locals for its pleasant green areas and beaches

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

More than 30 buses per day run between the airport and the Kokura station, many of them nonstop, but most stopping at each train station along the way. Buy the tickets before boarding for ¥620. The first bus leaves Kokura station Bus Center at 04:00, and the last bus leaves the airport at 24:55, after the last flight from Tokyo. Buses also run to/from Shimonoseki station eight times per day (70 minutes, ¥1000). If coming from the southeastern side of Kyushu, instead of going all the way to Kokura you can disembark at Kusami station (朽網駅), which has shuttle buses every 30 minutes or so to the airport, 20 minutes away, but only local trains stop at Kusami, no express trains.

By train [ edit ]

Kokura Station (小倉駅) is the main railway station and is on the San'yo Shinkansen Line. All San'yo Shinkansen trains stop at Kokura. Nozomi , Mizuho , Sakura and Hikari Rail Star trains make frequent runs to/from Hiroshima , Okayama and Osaka , with some Nozomi trains also running from Kyoto , Nagoya and Tokyo . Sakura trains also run to/from Kumamoto and Kagoshima . Remember that the Japan Rail Pass covers all the forementioned sections above, except Nozomi and Mizuho trains.

Both the San'yo Shinkansen Line and the Kagoshima Main Line (鹿児島本線 Kagoshima honsen ) connect Kitakyushu to Hakata station in Fukuoka . On the Shinkansen, Kokura can be reached from Hakata in 15-20 minutes at a cost of ¥2050 for an unreserved seat. Frequent Kodama runs are made between the two stations during rush hours.

By ferry [ edit ]

Kokura ferry terminal connects with Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture , Shikoku with an overnight ferry service. The ferry departs at 21:55 and arrives at 05:00 (you may stay on board until 07:00). A second class bunk costs ¥11,100 (as of April 2022). You need to fill out a short form before boarding the ferry.

Shin Moji ferry terminal connects with Osaka , Kobe and Tokyo . The Tokyo service is operated by Ocean Tokyu Ferry, 03-5148-0109; passenger fares are ¥14,000 for second class and ¥26,600 for first class.

Get around [ edit ]

For a tourist, JR trains are the easiest and likely the most convenient means of transport (except to and from the airport), as they give access to most of the city's non-natural attractions. Acquiring the JR Northern Kyushu pass is an overkill if you just want to go around Kitakyushu, but an attractive option if you also intent to go to nearby cities like Fukuoka and Beppu . Take note that the JR Northern Kyushu/JR Kyushu passes do not allow you to use the Shinkansen to go from Kokura to Hakata (but the normal JR Pass does).

By bus [ edit ]

Nishitetsu Bus operates local services as well as highway buses to nearby cities. Nishitetsu Buses accept most Japanese transport smartcards (Suica, PASMO, Sugoca, etc.) which will save you a lot of hassle and also save you some money when you transfer to the train or another bus to get to your destination. Bus stops are very informative, containing complete information about lines and time tables, although you will need to figure out the Kanji and delays of up to 5 minutes are normal.

By monorail [ edit ]

The Kitakyushu Monorail runs every ten minutes from JR Kyushu's Kokura station to Kikugaoka in Kokura Minami ward. The monorail is fun to ride and provides interesting views of the city, but its usefulness is impaired by the fact it offers no discount for transfer to trains or buses. Only a few station announcements are in English (including the stop for the Kitakyushu Media Dome and for the University of Kitakyushu).

On foot [ edit ]

Walking around the Kokura station is a breeze as there are many covered pedestrian pathways and arcades. Mojiko and Yahata are also more conveniently explored on foot.

The city has the reputation of being just an industrial area, but this is only true of part of the coastline. The city covers a very large area (much larger than Fukuoka , 486 km² as compared with 340), and there are many pleasant spots for sightseeing and recreation.

Kokura [ edit ]

• Mori Ogai house in Kokura. Literary giant Ogai wrote his Kokura Nikki (Kokura Diary) here. Ogai was based at the castle at the turn of the 19th-20th century when it was a military base. He was born in Tsuwano in Shimane prefecture .

• Hiraodai (平尾台). A rare karst plateau in Kokura Minami ward, 30-40 minutes by car from Kokura station. The grassy mountains are covered with large gray round rocks which the locals will tell you look like sheep grazing. Great for walks, hiking and camping. Caves can also be visited and the Shonyudo cave is not to be missed - wade through ice cold water in midsummer. There is no direct public transportation to Hiraodai, but a reasonably priced taxi service is available. The taxi leaves from the Nakatani Nishitetsu bus terminal (中谷車庫) and stops five minutes later at the JR Ishiharamachi Station (石原町駅) on the Hita-Hikosan Line (日田彦山線). It leaves the bus terminal twice a day M-F (09:40 and 16:05) and four times a day on Sa Su and holidays (09:40, 10:45, 13:40, 14:50). For more information about the taxi, call Hiraodai Kankou taxi at 451–0201, or ask at Kokura station information desk on the third floor.
• Sugao no taki waterfall in Kokura Minami ward - cool and popular with Japanese residents in the summer. Watch out for baby wild boars (uribo) which have been known to nibble at feet in search of food (from personal experience). You can rent bicycles from Dobaru cycling terminal and cycle around the whole area for a few hundred yen. Buses run to here from Kokura Station.

Moji [ edit ]

• Moji-ko Retro , a few minutes walk from Moji-ko station, is also attractive, and aimed specifically at the tourist trade. You can hire a rickshaw, visit the old buildings (including the room where Albert Einstein stayed the night at the Mitsui Club in 1922) and shop for souvenirs. Also be sure to go up the Moji Port Retro Observation Deck - there is a great 180-degree view from the 31st floor on fine days. Moji-ko is linked by a small and rapid ferry with Shimonoseki on the other side of the Kanmon straits. There is also an underground walk-way through the Kanmon Strait that connects Kyushu to the main island of Honshu. Moji-ko is famous for its Yakicurry, rice topped with Japanese curry, covered in cheese with an egg thrown in, and then baked. There are several restaurants in the area that serve variations of this specialty. The shabu shabu restaurant in Moji-ko station is also well worth a visit. Moji supposedly was a place where bananas were shipped to once and you can now buy banana soft-serve ice cream and other banana treats at touristy places there. For those with a little extra cash and an adventurous appetite, it is also famous for its Fugu (blowfish).

Wakamatsu [ edit ]

• Iwaya beach in Wakamatsu ward. You can catch the Kitakyushu City bus No. 41 from JR Kokura and Orio Stations. Get off at the last stop, Iwaya. Direct buses from Kokura station leave at 12:09 on weekdays and 10:16 on weekends and holidays. ¥440. Beware jellyfish after mid-August!

Yahata [ edit ]

• Kawachi reservoir in Yahata Higashi ward has an onsen (hot spring) with a rotenburo (outdoor bath). Courtesy bus from Yahata station. You can walk round the reservoir in about an hour, or rent a bicycle.
• Mount Sarakura , accessible by Hobashira cable car, provides superb views of the city, especially at night.

• 33.88583 130.87595 4 Zenrin Map Museum ( ゼンリン地図の資料館, zenrin no chizu no shiryōkan ) ( in Riverwalk, on the 14th floor ). M-F 10:00-17:00, closed at weekends and on national holidays . The Zenrin company, whose head office is in the black segment of the Riverwalk complex, is a major local employer which pioneered mapping software in Japan. This location has been chosen because a famous Edo period mapmaker, Ino Tadataka, started making his map of Kyushu here. Do [ edit ]

• Visit the Blast furnace near Space World train station. Japan's steel industry began here in 1901 and the original furnace is preserved as steelmaking was so important to Japan and the development of Kitakyushu in the 20th century. Also nearby are the city's natural history museum and environment museum.

• Cruise the Dokaiwan sea inlet between Tobata and Wakamatsu wards at night. Advanced bookings required, 19:00-21:00, Fridays in August, leaving from Tobata ferry stage, about seven minutes walk from Tobata station. Four trips only each year. ¥3,000 per person. Includes visit to former Furukawa Kogyo building in Wakamatsu where we were treated to live Hawaiian music and beer. Overall a good evening. The boats used for the cruise are the ferry boats which ply between Tobata and Wakamatsu, Japan's shortest and cheapest ferry (3 minutes, ¥50 per person, ¥50 per bicycle).
• Walk to Honshu! Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel starts in Moji-ko, near Mekari Park. The tunnel runs underwater between the islands of Kyushu and Honshu. After about ten minutes' walk you have emerged in Shimonoseki in Honshu, where you can ride a cable car up Hinoyama and enjoy a nice view of the Kanmon straits and Kitakyushu. Best on a clear day!
• ChaCha Town ( チャチャタウン小倉 ) ( Take the ¥100 bus marked "Sunatsu/Chacha Town" from the bus platform underneath Kokura Station ). shopping and amusement center with a movie theater, game center, food court, clothing stores, a grocery store, and a very big ¥100 shop. Popular with families and younger teens. On weekends there are concerts and other attractions in the amphitheater- usually a kids' dance group, a magician, or a local musician. The shopping center's token large red ferris wheel isn't the biggest, but it's kind of a fun way to see the city at night. ( updated May 2024 )
• Aru Aru City ( linked by pedestrian bridge to Kokura station north exit ). Easily reached from Kokura station, Aru Aru City is Kitakyushu's center of otaku culture, hosting frequent events per year, several stories of anime-, manga-, and game-themed shops, game arcades, a manga kissa, and the Kitakyushu Manga Museum . While obviously not as huge as Tokyo 's Akihabara or Osaka 's Den Den Town, it is far more specialised than those two and has the obvious convenience of having all shops under the same roof.  

Midsummer festivals [ edit ]

Watch one of the summer festivals held in July:

• Kokura Gion ( 小倉祇園太鼓, Kokura gion daiko ). Third weekend in July  
• Tobata Gion ( 戸畑祇園大山笠, Tobata gion yamagasa ). Designated an important intangible cultural asset of Japan and dates back to 1802. It involves the carrying of large floats called Yamagasa by about 100 men who shout "Yoitosa" to keep in time. Fourth weekend in July.  
• Kurosaki Gion ( 黒崎祇園山笠, Kurosaki gion yamagasa ). July 20–23  
• Wakamatsu Summer Festival ( 若松みなと祭り wakamatsu minuto matsuri ). in July  
• Wasshoi Hyakuman Summer Festival ( わっしょい百万夏祭り, Wasshoi Hyakuman Matsuri ). Early August. Many dance groups. Ends with a parade and firework display.  

Midsummer Fireworks (hanabi) [ edit ]

Summer firework displays (hanabi taikai) are also held in various places in and around Kitakyushu in July and August. Usually at least 3,000 fireworks are let off.

The biggest one with no less than 13,000 fireworks (!) is the Kanmon Straits display between Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki (mid-August 13). Be prepared for big crowds, especially on the trains to and from Kokura to Moji-ko.

One of the best and most popular places for hanami is around Kokura castle, but there are many others.

Buy [ edit ]

• Explore the spacious and ultra-modern Riverwalk shopping complex by the Murasaki river and near the castle
• Visit the classical department store, Izutsuya
• Stroll through Uomachi shopping area.
• The tiny traditional open-air Tanga market has fresh fish, fruit and vegetables in abundance. It is the oldest shopping arcade in Japan.
• Aru Aru City ( linked by pedestrian bridge to Kokura station north exit ). Aru Aru City is certainly the place for buying manga, anime, games and all related trinkets (posters, cards, action figures, etc.). Highly remarkable is the shop selling a large variety of old second hand videogames - if you still have a working Famicom, there will surely be something for you there.  

Eat [ edit ]

• Rihga Royal Hotel has several high-priced restaurants.
• There are many restaurants to suit all budgets in the Uomachi area near Kokura station, and at the top of the Izutsuya department store. Also try the sixth floor of Amu Plaza building above Kokura station.
• There is a McDonald's and a Lotteria Burger near Kokura station for the starving and desperate.
• In the sixth floor of Amu Plaza building, there is a kaiten (revolving) sushi restaurant. The chefs will make sushi to request and oblige requests for substitutions or no wasabi. They also make some grilled/seared fish sushi -- delicious! They have a few vegetarian options like kappamaki and you can also get fresh fruit and fried chicken and other non-sushi dishes. Service can really vary from time to time though -- sometimes the waitresses are more helpful and sometimes they ignore you.
• For cheaper stuff or deli take-out, you can find lots of good things to eat in the basement of Izutsuya.
• Towards the back of Kokura Station, across from the Shinkansen gate, there is a shopping area called Himawari Street. Downstairs in this area you will find another cluster of places to eat, including a sports yakitori bar, oden, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, Ringer Hut for fast food, and a 1950s-60s retro-styled area of tonkotsu ramen places.
• Popular foods in Kitakyushu include karashi mentaiko (辛子明太子, spicy pickled cod roe), tonkotsu ramen (the stinkier the better, apparently), and yaki-udon (just like yakisoba but using udon noodles). Chanpon, yakiniku, and Korean food such as bibimba also seem to be enjoying strong popularity.
• Hardtack has been sold since the 1920s in Yahata. Be careful not to break your teeth.
• Kokura is, quite literally, synonymous with a type of finely filtered red bean jam known as ogura-an (小倉餡) with an alternative reading of kokura-an , which makes its way into all sorts of Japanese pastries and desserts. But in fact ogura-an is from Ogurayama, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto , and ogura-an pan (red bean jam in bread rolls) was first made in Tokyo .

• Booties ( Opposite Izutsuya department store ). Open from 17:00 most days . Irish pub, Japanese-run, Guinness and pub food available. Big screen for viewing sports. ( updated May 2024 )
• There are three Starbucks in Kokura, one in Riverwalk, one near Kokura station and one inside the SunLive City shopping mall.

There are all sorts of options from the lap of luxury down to the cheapest ryokan. Ask at the Information desk, third floor of Kokura station.

• MediaCafe , 802-0001, Fukuoka Prefecture Kitakyushu, Kokurakita Ward, Asano１丁目-１- ( North exit on street level ). They have an English price list, and you can find monthly on the bottom of the sheet. Depends on how long you want to stay. Renting from ¥100 to sit down per hour and use their wifi in the common room, open booth, privates and monthly is under ¥40,000 .

• Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kokura-ekimae ( ダイワロイネットホテル小倉駅前 ). Good rooms and food.  

Splurge [ edit ]

• Rihga Royal Hotel Kokura ( リーガロイヤルホテル小倉 ), 2-14-2 Asano ( north of Kokura station ), ☏ +81-93-5311121 . The top hotel in town and the only Rihga Royal hotel in Kyushu .  

Stay safe [ edit ]

Kudo-kai , a yakuza organization known to use firearms and explosives, headquarters in Kitakyushu, and have records of using firearms and explosives to deal with anyone and any organizations dare to resist them, and in rare occasions, causing death of innocent civilians. The current situation have been improved, yet for the sake of your safety, stay away from gang activities .

During gang wars, explosives, especially hand grenades, are used often. If you encounter any suspicious objects, do not touch them . You should instead, dial 110 for local police assistance.

Kitakyushu: Getting there and around

Getting to kitakyushu.

• ¥ 22,000

Tokyo and Kitakyushu (Kokura Station) are connected by the Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen . The one way trip by direct Nozomi trains takes about five hours and costs about 22,000 yen. The Japan Rail Pass fully covers the trip if using Hikari and Sakura , but a supplement fee is required on Nozomi trains. The trip by Hikari and Sakura trains adds about one hour to the total travel time and requires a transfer of trains at Shin-Osaka Station.

JAL and Starflyer operate multiple flights per day between Tokyo 's Haneda Airport and Kitakyushu , with ANA codesharing the Starflyer flights. Flight duration is just under two hours. The regular one way fare by JAL and ANA is around 50,000 yen, but discount fares are typically available for 20,000 to 34,000 yen. The fares by Starflyer are typically around 10 percent lower than those of JAL and ANA.

Ocean Tokyu Ferry operates daily ferries between Tokyo (Tokyo Ferry Terminal on Odaiba ) and Kitakyushu (Shin-Moji Port) via Tokushima . The one way journey takes 34 hours and costs around 20,000 yen in the second class.

Getting around

Kokura Station is the transport hub of Kitakyushu and a major station along the Sanyo Shinkansen . It is also served by the JR Sanyo Line in the direction of Honshu, the JR Kagoshima Line, which runs south towards Fukuoka and north to Moji Port , and the JR Nippo Line, which runs in the direction of Oita . The Kitakyushu Monorail also departs from Kokura Station.

Most of Kitakyushu 's main tourist attractions are located within walking distance from a JR railway station with frequent connections to Kokura Station.

Kitakyushu Airport is located on a man-made island outside the city center and connected with Kokura Station by direct buses (40 minutes, 710 yen one way, about 1 bus/hour). Alternatively, the nearest train station to Kitakyushu Airport, JR Kusami Station, can be reached in a 20 minute bus ride (520 yen one way, about 2 buses/hour). From Kusami, it takes about 25 minutes and costs 280 yen one way to travel to Kokura Station by local train.

Most long-distance ferries to/from Kitakyushu use Shin-Moji Port ("New Moji Port", not to be confused with Moji Port ) far outside the city center, including the ferries to/from Osaka and Tokyo . Shin-Moji Port can be reached by shuttle buses operated by the ferry companies from Kokura Station (about 40 minutes) and Moji Station (about 20 minutes). However, the ferries to/from Matsuyama use the more central Kokura Port , which can be reached in a 15 minute walk from Kokura Station.
