It’s easy to manage, stays neat, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Whether you’re rushing through airports or attending a fancy dinner, this timeless ‘do adapts effortlessly.

8 Easy Travel Hairstyles For Your Next Adventure

One of the best things about the low bun is its low-maintenance nature. Once it’s up, it stays put through various conditions, protecting your hair from sun damage, salt water, or unexpected weather. It’s also great for disguising travel-induced bad hair days and works for all hair types and lengths.

For the perfect travel-ready low bun, consider using snag-free elastics that are gentle on your hair and strong enough to hold your bun in place all day, making them an essential addition to any travel beauty kit.

This hairstyle is versatile enough to work for various occasions, from casual beach days to impromptu dinners. This style is ideal for second-day hair, making it a practical choice when you can’t wash your hair daily on the road.

Creating a messy top knot is simple and fast. Gather your hair at the crown, twist, wrap, and secure. The beauty of this style lies in its intentionally undone look, so don’t worry about making it perfect.

To keep your messy top knot in place throughout your adventures, use sturdy hair ties that will hold your bun securely without snagging or damaging your hair. They’re a must-have addition to your travel beauty kit , ensuring your messy top knot stays put whether you’re sightseeing or dancing the night away.

8 Easy Travel Hairstyles For Your Next Adventure

The sleek ponytail keeps hair out of your face while exploring new destinations and works well in various climates, especially hot and humid ones. This timeless style transitions easily from day to night activities, making it ideal for busy travel itineraries.

A sleek ponytail is also great for disguising less-than-fresh hair during long trips when washing isn’t always possible. It’s quick to style and maintains a polished look throughout the day, whether you’re sightseeing or attending a dinner.

Loose waves work for various occasions, from sightseeing to impromptu dinners, and are ideal for second or third-day hair. To achieve loose waves with minimal effort, start with slightly damp hair, divide it into 4-6 sections, and twist each one away from your face. Secure the twists with hair ties and let them air dry. Once dry, unravel the twists and run your fingers through your hair for a tousled look.

For extra hold and texture, use a sea salt spray or lightweight hair oil. This style is easy to refresh with dry shampoo and by re-twisting a few face-framing pieces while on the go. To maintain your braided crown throughout your trip, pack travel-sized dry shampoo and hairspray. These will help you touch up your style on the go, keeping you looking fresh and put-together. With this practical hairstyle and the right tools, you’ll be ready for any adventure your journey brings.

The half-up style transitions seamlessly from casual daytime activities to evening outings, adapting to your travel itinerary. It’s suitable for different hair types and lengths, offering a quick solution for looking put-together on the go.

To achieve this look, gather the top half of your hair and secure it with a hair tie. For a polished finish, use gentle, snag-free elastics to hold your style in place throughout your adventures without damaging your hair. Look for compact, travel-friendly hair ties that you can easily pack into your beauty kit.

The side braid offers all-day comfort and prevents tangles, keeping your hair neat and manageable throughout your adventures. This versatile style is easy to create and maintain on the go, making it ideal for busy travel days. Part your hair to one side, gather it over your shoulder, and start braiding. Secure it with a hair tie, and you’re ready to explore.

The side braid works for all hair types and lengths, transitioning seamlessly from day to night activities. It’s suitable for various travel scenarios, from city sightseeing to beach relaxation. The scarf updo adds flair to your look while protecting your hair from various elements. This versatile style is perfect for battling humidity, and wind, or covering up unwashed hair during long trips. Creating a scarf updo is quick and easy, making it ideal for busy travelers. Start by tying your hair into a ponytail or bun, then wrap a folded scarf or bandana around your head and tie it at the nape of your neck. 9 Low-Maintenance Hairstyles That Are Beauty-Editor Approved and Perfect for Travelling

When you're preparing to travel, your hair is probably the last thing on your mind. You may have your bag packed , your outfit planned, and your in-flight skincare routine ready to go, but if you're anything like me than your travel hairstyle is probably at the bottom of your priority list.

With that said, I'm determined that that will all change this summer . Instead of leaving my hair loose—in which case it inevitably gets greasy quickly, accumulates knots and tangles, and makes me feel hot and frustrated—I've learned that simple up-dos really are the way forward.

Ahead of my summer travels, I've bookmarked the easiest, most low maintenance travel hairstyle ideas I could find, and shared them all below. Scroll and screenshot.

Summer Hairstyle Ideas:

1. low ponytail.

3. High Bun

A simple claw clip up-do is about as quick, easy, and travel-friendly as they come.

7. Slicked-Back Bun

Travel hairstyle ideas

Fuss-free, quick, easy, and actually very chic—a slicked back ballerina bun is one of my travel hairstyle go-tos.

8. Half-Up Half-Down

Five Easy Hairstyles for Travel (that aren’t a messy bun or ponytail!)

Alyssa adjusts her hair in a mirror

I think it’s fair to say that we all want to look our best when we travel, but we don’t want to spend hours at the hotel bathroom sink trying to make it happen.

So how do you look “normal” after traveling long distances for days at a time, often without access to a curling/straightening iron, let alone a shower? With five minutes and just a little prep, that’s how!

Today I’m sharing five hairstyles that can be managed while away from home, with minimal effort and styling tools and just a few minutes of precious travel time. Note : hair types and lengths vary, so I can only attest to the fact that these styles work well on my fine, armpit-length hair.

Let’s get stylin’:

1. LOOSE WAVES

a woman with loose waves is seen in the mirror

I begin just about every trip with my hair styled this way. I shower as close as I can to our departure, washing really well with a clarifying shampoo if I don’t expect to have the opportunity to wash it for a couple of days, and either blow dry or air dry my hair.

Once it’s dry, I curl it with a traditional curling iron, holding it vertically and avoiding my scalp and ends to curl 1-inch sections of hair at a time, working back to front (the barrel size I use depends on the length of my hair – right now I’m using a 1-1/4″ barrel iron ). I turn the barrel away from my face on all but a few curls, when I rotate the other way, which helps avoid that pageant-curl look. I then let the curls cool completely before spritzing them with a little sea salt spray  and/or texture spray .

Afterward, I break up the curls a tad by running my fingers through them and adding a little shine oil . At first, the curls feel a little much , but they eventually settle down. By the second, third, or, um, fourth day (with the help of some  dry shampoo and  lifting powder ), my hair just has a gentle bend and a lot more movement than if it was left straight. Here’s how I achieve that style:

a woman with clean long hair

2. AIR-DRIED + TWISTED

a woman with heat-free waves

It’s pretty safe to assume that a hotel will have a hairdryer for guests to use (if not in the room, then at least available for checkout from the front desk), but Airbnb is the Wild West of amenities. After a few instances of arriving at my Airbnb to find the promised blowdryer missing (I’ve been told more than once that oh gosh , the dryer was stolen by the guest right before me. Sure, Jan ), I turn to heatless waves.

To create texture without the use of heat tools, I make sure to shower before the end of the evening to allow my hair to fully air-dry before the next morning. My hair has a naturally irregular wave to it, so I tend to coax it into play while it dries. This can be done by scrunching it several times as it dries, but I prefer the more hands-off approach of gently twisting my hair away from my face and allowing it to set.

Many prefer a bun (and if that’s your go-to, go for it!), but I’m not a fan of how it only creates curls in one direction. Plus, I find it much more comfortable to sleep with my hair tied back this way than with a blob of a bun. Here’s how I get heat-free waves, step by step:

a woman with damp hair

When my roots are so greasy that all the dry shampoo in the world can’t sop up their oils, or if I’m going somewhere incredibly windy or where I expect to work up a sweat, I braid my hair. Sure, I’ll change the placement of the braid or change from a French braid to a Dutch braid depending on the day, but the formula is basically the same (if you’ve never mastered a French braid, I suggest checking out a few of the countless videos on Youtube and you’ll be a pro in no time!).

To save time while making a maximum impact, I pull larger sections of hair into the braid to create a bolder shape. Braids work best on at least day-old hair, but if it’s freshly washed you can add a texturizing powder to help it stay put (it’s also great for adding definition to Dutch braids).

If the braid is even, you’ll also end up with nice S-shaped waves when you take it down – another heat-free style to work with! The braids shown below are the most common ones I wear when traveling:

I can hear you thinking, “ A hat is not a hairstyle ,” so hear me out:

Yes, sometimes hats are for those days when you’re roots are too greasy or your hair creased in a strange way because you slept on your pillow funny, but sometimes you need them to stay warm. But then, *horror of horrors*, you need to remove them when you arrive at your destination. And now you have hat head and think you maybe should have sacrificed warmth for style (at least that’s how I used to feel every time I wore a beanie).

Since I part my hair on one side, I eventually discovered that if I flipped my part before putting the hat on my head, I could just flip it back when I remove my hat. So simple, and it took me so long to figure it out! Now when I remove my hat, I’m often left with more volume than when I started – and with my fine hair, that’s a very good thing.

Step-by-step, this is how I flip my part (there aren’t many steps!):

a woman adjusting her hair

The first time I saw someone pull their hair back like this, I swore it was magic.

This hairstyle is classy and elegant, or can also be roughed up a bit to look more casual or edgy (my preference!). I’ll often pull my hair up like this briefly if it’s windy and I’m missing a hair tie, or if I need to shower and don’t want to wash my hair.

It takes a bit of practice to get it right, but once you have it down, you can accomplish this style in about thirty seconds. I find I have better success with this style on slightly dirty hair or with the use of hair texturizers, but if your hair naturally holds its shape well, you should be able to do this one anytime! Here’s how:

FINAL THOUGHTS ON QUICK HAIRSTYLES FOR TRAVEL

Perhaps one day I’ll have a travel budget with enough room to accommodate a visit to a blow-dry bar before every trip, but for the foreseeable future, that’s not in the cards. For now, I’m happy to have a few quick and easy hairstyles ready to deploy so I can get out and enjoy my destination.

4 Travel-Friendly Hairstyles for Your Next Trip

Styling your hair takes a little more effort when you’re traveling. No matter if you’re all set to go on a trip with your friends or spend time with your loved one in an exotic place, it can be challenging to find a low-maintenance hairstyle.

While it’s always a good idea to carry along essential hair styling tools and products for long vacations, you’ll want to spend more time enjoying your trip than styling your hair. But at the same time, you want to rock a beautiful hairstyle and capture Instagram-worthy photos. Here are some tips to get you through.

What if Your Hair Lacks Length and Volume?

If you’re concerned about your short, thin, or less voluminous hair, we recommend you get a set of clip-in extensions for your next trip. Clip-in wefts are best for traveling because you can apply and remove them yourself within a matter of minutes.

Clip-in human hair extensions are low maintenance, you can use them to create many different styles, and they look entirely natural. These extensions instantly add volume, thickness, and length to your hair. And, with a little bit of care, you can wear them comfortably throughout your vacation.

Be sure, however, to buy a set of high-quality human hair extensions like Zala clip-in hair extensions . These extensions are silky and smooth, last longer, and blend perfectly with natural hair.

4 Easy and Low Maintenance Travel Hairstyles

You want simple travel-friendly hairstyles that require little to no restyling or maintenance during your excursion. Simple hairstyles also don’t require you to pack too many products and styling tools.

Here’re some beautiful but easy hairstyles for your next trip.

1. Fishtail Braid

Braids are among the most popular travel hairstyles as they cause less hair breakage than styles like ponytails. A fishtail braid is simple to achieve but gives you a sophisticated look.

Follow these steps to create the fishtail braid:

  • Start off by dividing your hair into two equal portions.
  • Grab a small section from the outer area of the left portion, swaddle it over the tip of the left part, and then insert it under the right portion.
  • Repeat step 2 on the next side, taking a small section from the right side and tugging it under the left section.
  • Continue this process, alternating between the right and left segments until the braiding is complete.
  • Finally, use a hair tie to hold your hairstyle in place, and you’re good to go!

scrunchies.

2. Messy Bun With a Headband

The messy bun is our favorite travel hairstyle because you can achieve it within 10 to 15 seconds. Perfect for airplane travel! On top of that, it adds a dash of style to your overall look and hides any oily roots.

Here’s how you can get this hairstyle:

  • Make your hair into a ponytail and then form it into a bun of your choice, beginning from the base.
  • Put a hair tie around the bun while leaving out some loose strands.
  • Take your preferred headband and cloak it around the bun.

This hairstyle also works best with clip-in hair extensions in case your hair lacks length and volume.

3. Half-Up Top Knot

Yet another quick hairstyle, the half-up top knot is your best travel companion. It works perfectly even if your hair has greasy roots. In fact, it makes you look your very best even with a little bit of dirty hair.

Here’s how to get this hairstyle: Apply a tiny portion of dry shampoo (powder version) to the roots of your hair. Then, take the top half section of your hair and form it into a messy top knot.

Hurray, you’ve achieved the half-up top knot! That was quick, wasn’t it?

low braid.

4. Low Side Braid

Whether you’re traveling in a car or an airplane, you don’t want your hair to rub against the headrest because it can be pretty damaging and uncomfortable. With a low side braid, you can rest assured this won’t happen.

This travel hairstyle is the easiest of all; just tug your hair to the side and create a braided hairstyle. Now use a hair tie to hold it in place, and you’re done! For the strands above your collarbone, it is a good idea to use a bobby pin to keep them in place.

For travel hairstyles that take less than five minutes. We always want our hair out of our face when traveling, so I've compiled a few of my favorites that are simple and basic hairstyles, so you can have a few ideas for what to do with your hair the next time you're jetting off on a flight or packing up for a road trip. Let me know what your favorite hairstyle is to wear when you're traveling.

10 Super Easy Hairstyles For Your Traveling

1.braided bun.

braided bun

Braid is the best way to avoid your hair from getting frizzy. Try those or style your hair your own way. Braid the sides and bun it later, make multiple braids and bun them all at the back or you can even braid the hair and bun it on the side.

2.Milkmaid Braids

milkmaid braids

This style is the fusion of style and convenience- while intricate, it still doesn’t get in your way. You only need to weave two low pigtails, secure them on top of your head, and you’ll be good to go.

3.High Ponytail

high ponytail

Make a traditional ponytail into an airplane-ready style by moving up its placement to the crown of your head. That way, your ponytail won't press against the headrest on the airplane. To minimize breakage, secure the ponytail with a scrunchie rather than an elastic hair tie.

4.Add a Scarf

curly hair headband wig

The easiest way to make messy hair look Instagram-ready? Add a silk scarf! A colorful scarf looks cute and has the added benefit of hiding most of your hair. Plus, we love the idea of buying a scarf on vacation as a souvenir. There are countless ways to tie a silk scarf or check out one of the many; videos like this one; that makes it easy to perfect this simple hairstyle. I think the headband wigs are your best choice.

top knot

No time to blow out your hair when traveling? The top knot will be your best friend. The top knot is a go-to style for literally every hair type and whether your hair is curly or straight, long or short, thin or thick, we're confident there's a top knot out there that will look absolutely fabulous on you!

6.The Modern Messy Bun

messy bun

Most short hairstyles need heating tools to style them. However, when it comes to this traveling hairstyle, you don't need any heating tool. It is worn by wearing a headband that is then twisted to form a high bun. The top strands are then lifted to create a dramatic effect that is unnoticed, yet cute and perfect for any travel event.

7.Low, Side Ponytails

low side ponytails

Whenever you are on the road for a holiday, you need to discard that fussy do that requires lots of maintenance. Low, side ponytails are the worthy alternatives. They are perfect for long trips when you cannot blow dry or wash your hair.

Just gather the hair into a low ponytail, move it to the side of the nape, and fasten it in place. Finally, tousle the tail to achieve a casual and textured look.

8.A Bob Hairstyle

short bob human hair wig

This stylish, chic, and versatile crop is arguably the best haircut you can go for when preparing to embark on a long trip. It can be incredibly messed up for a day look, is incredibly attractive, and shows off your feminine features. Now that's incredible versatility.

9.Wander Around Wearing a Hat

short straight hat wig

Honestly, a hat is an adventure traveler's best friend. Sometimes, you'll find yourself in remote locations, realize you haven't showered in days, and resort to wearing your favorite baseball cap.

A hat is useful for all aspects of a trip and isn't just a way to cover up greasy hair. For long hikes in the sun, a ball cap helps to shade your eyes. And if you often forget to reapply sunscreen while sightseeing, a wide-brim hat will protect your skin. At Julia Hair Mall, we recommend you to wear our baseball cap wigs to enjoy your traveling.

10.French Braid

french braid

Going to the beach? Try a single or double French braid. French braids hold every hair firmly in place, ensuring that hair stays tangle-free even in water or on windy days. Plus, you can undo your braid in the evening for effortlessly cool waves.

11.Low Side Braid

low side braid

Pulling your braid to the side means your hair won't rub up against the back of your headrest. Plus, this airplane hairstyle couldn’t be easier! Just pull hair to the side, braid and secure with a hair tie. If your hair is above collarbone length, use a bobby pin to secure the back and keep this side-parted style in place.

Some Tips About Your Hair When Traveling

While on a road trip or cruise, there are a lot of tricks you need to keep up your sleeve to avoid making your hair fussy or messy or unsightly. For example, you might want to slather your hair with moisturizers or oils before plunging it into chlorinated or salt waters.

You should also shield your hair from the sun and keep brushing it often. Find a moisturizer or oil that works for you, and stick to it.

Pack your bags, and your travel accessories, and get ready for the summer months ahead. Incorporate these must-have styles into your travel look to achieve hassle-free hair and unique beauty.

Quick and Easy Travel Hairstyles

Nuku Hiva Excursion

There isn’t a single girl in the world who refuses to acknowledge their deep affection for their hair. Sincerity be damned, girls, we’re hair addicted! Women are aware that certain hairstyles will enhance their appearance. However, there are several hairstyles for women that you may not be aware of yet, but they will keep your hair unharmed when you’re on the road. Ladies, we are there for you!

When all you want to do is tie your hair in ponytails for the day, these rapid and straightforward hairstyles will still make you appear more gorgeous. For the most part, a couple of rubber bands will do the rest work! Some, depending on the length of your hair, may need a couple of bobby pins. However, if you’re traveling, these are the 7 easiest travel-worthy hairstyles to consider!

If you have really long hair and love to flaunt your cuteness, a top bun should be the best yet easiest hairstyle for you. This ideal travel hairstyle helps cover the top of your head, where your tresses often look greasy.

If your hair is a little shorter in length, you can still have a top bun; just be careful to use bobby pins to secure any unruly hairs at the back of your head; otherwise, you may use a securing hairspray to manage any stray hair. I use a bun kit to make myself look like I have a fuller bun.

2. Dutch boxer braids

These women’s hairstyles look good on the move and prevent frizz. After dividing your hair into two identical sections, create a Dutch braid on both sides. For shielding your hair from dehydration and pollutants from the city, Dutch boxer braids are the ideal option. Your hair still appears natural and stylish aside from this. This matches your outfit while protecting your hair.

3. Bubble Ponytail

This has swiftly gained popularity as a substitute for the monotonous ponytail. Although the ladies can’t pull off this look with their short hair, the bubble ponytail looks great on long hair . For ladies with long hair, a standard ponytail can be quite annoying when traveling for extended periods, particularly when undertaking adventurous activities. You may end up with a hot mess-like appearance, flyaways, and hair that gets glued to the nape of your neck.

4. High Ponytail Braid

If you’re blessed with long hair, this is an even better option. Especially if you like to be outdoors and want a practical hairstyle . Compared to a standard braid, it offers a slightly higher rise. For a person with a round face, this looks more appealing than pulling the locks back into a low braid without twisting them up first. Try various appearances depending on your face’s anatomy and the volume of your hair.

5. Milkmaid bun

This is the most suitable hairstyle for ladies visiting tropical locations. When wearing a milkmaid one-side braid, your hair stays in place since no part of the braids is visible. No frizz means no exposure!

Creating this hairstyle could be a little challenging at first, but as you get the hang of it, you’ll become an expert every day. By the way, that hairdo is stunning. This is what you need to do in order to succeed in every aspect of life. Simply put, one hairdo you can wear while on the run with any imaginable outfit is the milkmaid one-side bun.

6. The Classic Ponytail

The ponytail is the Swiss Army knife of hairstyles—simple, versatile, and perfect for most travel situations. To add a twist to the classic style, pull some strands out to frame your face or wrap a section of hair around the base to hide the elastic. This look is practical for sightseeing days or when you’re on the go from dawn till dusk.

7. Blunt bob

The blunt bob is an ensemble that your hairstylist can create for you, and there are plenty of variations you can rock. Either straight or moderately curled hair is an option; your personality will grow, and your locks will look fantastic in both cases. A blunt bob is merely a hairstyle that can be accessorized with various hairpieces.

Everyone wants to look their best, even though they’re sweating profusely on an extremely sultry day in Thailand , Mexico , or anywhere else. This is especially true in the days of Instagram and documenting every detail of your travels on camera. Hopefully, these 7 cute, elegant, and easy hairstyles allow you to look your best while traveling.

  • Step 3 / Twist the band over your dominant hand and then use the other hand to spread the hair around the ponytail base.
  • Step 4 / Wrap the hair band twice more over this base. You can wrap it more or less depending on the thickness of your hair.
  • Step 5 / Pull on the edges of the bun until it’s as big as you want. T

Half Up Bun Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Start by gathering a section of hair at the top of the head.
  • Step 2 / Twist the section together and wrap it clock-wise into spiral then pull the end through the middle and continue wrapping the ends around the bun.
  • Step 3 / Wrap a clear elastic band around the bun and then pin down any edges so it’s flush with the head.

Topsy Tail Side Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style, bring all of the hair over one shoulder and tie it together with an elastic band.
  • Step 2 / Now tie a second elastic band about 3 inches down from the first elastic.
  • Step 3 / Create a gap in the hair between the elastic bands and flip the ends through the gap to create a twist.
  • Step 4 / Then you can pull on the edges to make the twists a little bit bigger so they’re easier to see.
  • Step 5 / Next tie a third elastic band another 3 inches down and then create a gap above the band and clip the ends through the gap.
  • Step 6 / Then pull on the edges of the twists to make them a little bigger.

I love this style with a baseball cap as well and it only takes a few minutes to do.

Side Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style start by bringing all of the hair over the left shoulder.
  • Step 2 / Then divide the hair into three smaller sections and cross the side strands under the middle strand.
  • Step 3 / Continue the braid down the section and then once the braid reaches the bottom you can go back over it, pulling on the edges to make the braid wider.
  • Step 4 / Tie off the end with an elastic band.
  • Step 5 / Then take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic band and tie a second elastic over the bottom of the wrapped piece making sure to include the ends and this will hold the wrapped piece in place.

Two Fishtail Braids Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Begin by dividing the hair into two equal halves, a left and right side.
  • Step 2 / Take one side and divide it into three sections.
  • Step 3 / Begin a regular braid crossing the side strands over the middle strand.
  • Step 4 / Then combine two sections together and braid the rest of the section into a fishtail braid.
  • Step 5 / Half way down the hair go back over the braid, pulling on the edges to make the braid fuller.
  • Step 6 / Then just continue the braid down to the ends, pull on the edges to make the braid bigger, and tie it off with an elastic band.
  • Step 7 / Then repeat the same steps braiding the other half into a second fishtail braid.

Two Dutch Braids Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Start by dividing the hair into two equal halves and tie off one side.
  • Step 2 / Then simply braid each half into a dutch braid. As a reminder, when creating a dutch braid, the side strands are crossed under the middle strand and small sections of hair are brought into the braid as you work your way from the forehead down to the nape of the neck.
  • Step 3 / Once all of the hair is brought into the braid continue braiding the section down to the ends.
  • Step 4 / Tie off the bottom of the braid with a little clear elastic band.
  • Step 5 / Then repeat the same steps with the hair on the opposite side.

Tip: You can go back over both braids, pulling on the sides to make them fuller or leave them tight against the head, it just depends on your own personal style.

Half Up Fishtail Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / First, divide off a section of hair on both sides of the head right above the ears and tie it together at the back of the head.
  • Step 2 / Then with this tied off section, create a fishtail braid by splitting it into two sections and crossing small pieces of hair from one half over to the opposite side.
  • Step 3 / Continue the braid as far down the section as you prefer and I like to pull on the sides of the braid as I go to make it fuller and more casual and then just tie off the end of the braid with a clear baby elastic.

simple travel hairstyles

Low Bun Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style, start by  combining all of the hair together at the nape of the neck.
  • Step 2 / Take a hair band and wrap it over the hair only pulling the ponytail half way through.
  • Step 3 / Then twist the left hand which will twist the hair and the hair band at the same time and then grip the base of the ponytail with the left hand.
  • Step 4 / With the right hand, pull the hair band over the hair. This will create the base of the messy bun.
  • Step 5 / Then take any hair left sticking out and tuck it back into the hair band.

simple travel hairstyles

Dutch Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Begin by gathering a section of hair at the top of the head and split it into three sections.
  • Step 2 / Cross the side strands under the middle strand while bringing in new sections of hair and working down the back of the head until the braids reaches the nape of the neck.
  • Step 3 / Then continue the braid down the section of hair without bringing in any new hair.
  • Step 4 / Then tie off the end of the braid with a clear elastic band.

Bonus Sleep Bun Instructions:

This next style really isn’t a wearable hairstyle but it;s great if you got a blow out or curled your hair before the trip and want to take a nap without getting any kinks in your hair.

  • Step 1 / Simply combine all of your hair together at the top of your head.
  • Step 2 / Twist it together and wrap it into a spiral or bun on the top of your head.
  • Step 3 / Then secure the ends with a claw clip.
  • Step 4 / Once you’ve arrived at your destination simply let down your hair and it’s still maintained a bit of the curl or volume you had put into it before the trip.

7 Backpacking Hairstyles: Cute, Heatless, Easy Travel Hairstyles

Are you looking for quick and simple backpacking hairstyles? You came to the right place!

In this article, I will show you the best hairstyles for traveling that are easy, cute, and require no heat!

When I go backpacking, I want my hair to look cute, but I don’t want to spend too much time on it. I pack minimal hair styling products as I tend to pack in personal items only , so the space I work with is minimal.

This article is for all my girly backpackers looking for easy hairstyles for travel!

I always get compliments on my hairstyles when I travel and on my Instagram, and I think it is funny because it takes me no time!

I don’t like to have my hair flying around or touching me when I’m hot, so I always look for cute hairstyles for traveling.

As a solo female traveler, my main criterion is that my travel hairstyles keep the hair out of my face, are easy to create, and look good in photos.

Keep on reading to learn all my best travel hairstyles!

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link. I hope you find the information here helpful!

Best backpacking hairstyles

I will organize these travel hairstyles based on how many days you can go without washing your hair, and they can still look good. As a backpacker, you know it is a very important criterium.

You can create all these easy hairstyles for traveling yourself in your hostel dorm room or bathroom with a nice mirror.

However, for the last one, you might need two mirrors or help from a friend you made while traveling .

1. Half-up ponytail

girl with a Half-up ponytail hairstyle backpacking

Half-up ponytail is an effortless hairstyle that takes less than 2 minutes to make. It could take 30 seconds if your hair ties nicely on the first try, without awkward bumps.

This hairstyle works great for all types and lengths of hair, as you are only tying up the top layer of your hair. It looks amazing on curly hair!

This hairstyle works best for 2nd to 3rd-day hair, as I like to keep my hair loosely tied with some front pieces framing the face. However, adding dry shampoo helps to make it look good for longer!

  • Hair type : All types of hair; long, short, straight, curly
  • Tools : 1 Hair tie or a claw clip
  • Days without washing: 2nd to 3rd-day hairstyle
  • Time : 1-2 minutes

2. Half-up braid

girl facing backwards with a half up braid in antwerp

Half-up braid is an elevated version of a half-up pony. For this hairstyle, I gather the same amount of hair as for the half pony and braid it down. You could do a half pony first and then braid it down if you want your hairstyle to be tighter.

Similarly, as the half pony, this hairstyle works best for 2nd to 3rd-day hair. It looks great in photos on straight hair because it adds some texture to the hair!

Half braids are fantastic travel hairstyles for medium hair, as you can see in the second photo.

  • Tools : 1 small elastic or 1 big hair tie, or both!
  • Days without washing : 2nd to 3rd-day hairstyle
  • Time : 2-3 minutes

3. French braid

a girl overlooking kotor cove with a french braid hairstyle

French braid is such a versatile hairstyle! If you are good at braiding your own hair, it takes you less than 1 minute to make it.

If your hair is wet, a quick French braid is the best travel hairstyle!

While it is definitely a cute hairstyle, I mainly do it as a heatless curls method for traveling.  If you saw my hair with more texture in some photos, I probably let it air-dry in a French braid.

And here is a tip for my girls with fine, straight hair! If you want to add more texture to your hair while traveling, let it dry in a French braid. It is the best hairstyle for fine hair as it gives you so much texture to work with.

  • Tools : 1 small elastic or 1 big hair tie

4. High Ponytail

a girl in granada facing backwards with her hair in a ponytail

We are going back to the basics with a ponytail. Yes, everybody can make it, and it takes no effort at all. However, it gets your hair out of your face and brings back the volume your greasy hair needs.

Some people might want to go for a low ponytail. They look elegant if it works for you! However, it does not work for me.

A ponytail is a fantastic hairstyle for active travel days, a great hiking hairstyle, and if you sleek down your hair, a ponytail can also be an elegant hairstyle.

Don’t underestimate the power of a ponytail!

  • Tools : 1 big hair tie
  • Days without washing : 3rd-day hairstyle

5. Simple bun

a girl with a bun in paros greece

Sometimes, you just want your hair not to touch you, especially if you’re backpacking Europe in summer . I can’t count how many times I gave up on having my hair down, just to put it in a messy bun on top of my head.

However, spend 3-5 minutes making your bun look nice, and it is a great travel hairstyle.

I found that a bun looks and stays in my hair best when my hair is longer.

The way I do my bun is like bun #3 in this hair tutorial (go to 2:00 to see the bun I am talking about) This bun stays in place the whole day once I add a couple of bobby pins!

  • Hair type : Works best on hair longer than shoulder length, straight or curly
  • Tools : 1 big hair tie and 4 bobby pins, or 1 claw clip
  • Days without washing : 3rd – 4th-day hairstyle
  • Time : 3-5 minutes

6. Half-up double dutch braids

half double dutch braids hairstyle

We are getting into some more complex backpacking hairstyles. Half-up double Dutch braids will take approximately 5-10 minutes to make, depending on how good you are at braiding your own hair.

Nonetheless, this hairstyle is worth the effort. Nobody will know you haven’t washed your hair in days. It looks fabulous in the photos!  It is my most complimented hairstyle on my Instagram.

Also, this is one of the best travel hairstyles for medium hair. As you can see in the second photo, your hair doesn’t need to be long for it to look good!

  • Tools : 2 small hair ties or 1 big hair tie
  • Days without washing : 3rd day and more!
  • Time : 5-10 minutes

7. Double Dutch braids

girl with double dutch braids hairstyle backpacking, sitting in the mountains looking at the landscape

Finally, we have the double dutch braids. They are one of my favorite cute hiking hairstyles that works great for active days on your vacation itinerary .

It takes some effort to make this hairstyle, but it is worth it.

Once you braid your hair in double dutch braids, it stays put for a whole day, even two! Some people keep it in for even longer, but my scalp starts hurting after a while.

These hairstyles for hiking take some time. Firstly, you need to evenly divide your hair. For that, you need two mirrors or help from a friend. Then you have to braid it.

I admit that this hairstyle can look better when somebody else makes it for you, but I do it myself. It works best on longer hair, but you can do it on shorter hair!

This hairstyle works great if you’re backpacking in winter and you want to wear a hat outside and have your hair look good when you take it off as well.

  • Tools : 2 small hair ties

What’s my hair type?

I wanted to quickly address this, as you will see in the photos, my hair is relatively long and straight .

It gets greasy quickly, so ideally I would wash it every three days.

If you can go longer between the washes, I am jealous!

However, these hairstyles keep my hair looking fresh for longer and look great in photos.

These are my best travel hairstyles for long hair and medium-length hair . I will show you examples of how they worked on my hair when it was a different length.

However, most of them can work as hairstyles for short hair too!

My hair is straight, but all these hairstyles work great on wavy to curly hair.  Unfortunately, I don’t know much about coily, or natural hair, but if you girls try it out, let me know!

Travel hair styling essentials for backpacking

My travel hair care routine is very simple. Depending on the length of the trip, I will pack travel-sized bottles of my usual shampoo and conditioner or a solid shampoo bar.

I will transfer my usual hair products in travel-sized bottles for up to a month-long trip. I find it best if you can keep your regular hair care routine while traveling. It is also a great way to save money for travel .

I will bring a solid shampoo bar if I am backpacking for more than a month.

You could buy full-sized products once you reach your destination, but I don’t like the additional weight in my backpack.

I don’t bother bringing dry shampoo if I travel in hot climates. You can easily wash your hair, and it will be air-dried in an hour. On the other hand, if I travel in the winter, I will pack a travel-sized dry shampoo bottle.

Hair styling must-haves for backpacking

  • Hairbrush – Tangle Teezer
  • Regular hair ties
  • Small elastics

I love my Tangle Teezer brush because it t is compact and efficient. It is the best hair brush for traveling and the only hair tool I bring backpacking!

You will also need hair ties. Pack at least 3 regular-sized hair ties that can hold your hair securely in a ponytail. Then, pack at least 10 mini hair elastics. Unfortunately, they tend to snap easily and be single-use products.

I pack at least 5 bobby pins. That is how many I need for my bun to stay in place. If your hair is thick and curly, pack as many as you need!

Finally, bring a claw clip. You can clip it to your backpack, and it is the easiest way to wrap your hair in a quick bun!

A cute headband can keep those bangs out of your face when you’re beachside or strolling through local markets.

And don’t forget a handful of bobby pins—they’re the unsung heroes of hair emergencies. Oh, and a chic silk scarf not only protects your locks from the sun but also adds a splash of glamor to any outfit.

12 Effective Shampoos for Straight Hair that Add Body and Shine

5 quick and comfy travel-friendly hairstyles.

Travel with ease and comfort with these fun hairstyles.

In case you didn’t know, planning travel outfits is actually a thing. You know what’s also a thing? Finding the right hairstyle that’s quick, cute and comfortable to wear while traveling. Hairstyles like mid-buns and ponytails may be quite uncomfy when it’s time for a nap. Ever wondered why the center of your head felt like you got hit by something hard after a long flight? Yeah, blame your bun. And sometimes, wearing your hair down or out can leave you with parched hair — thanks to the dry airplane air. So, how about trying out hairstyles that ensure a sound rest and tangle-free hair all while still being stylish? Sounds like to perfect travel plan to us! Whether you’re taking a road trip or flying across the country, here are some of our favorite travel-friendly hairstyles to wear during your commute.

Comfy and Cute Travel-Friendly Hairstyles

travel-friendly hairstyle blonde hair bun

1. Undone Top Knot

Ideal travel-friendly hairstyles for the rough sleeper and for the gal that simply has no time to do her hair before her red eye, involve a style that is undone, but still cute. Sweep your hair up into a messy bun. Make sure your bun is high enough to maximize comfort. This hairstyle is so easy you could do it on a plane.

travel-friendly hairstyle four strand braid long hair

2. Side Braid Ponytail

This look is a bit more polished and great for traveling, especially if you’re heading straight to your destination without any time to pull yourself together. Smooth hair into a low ponytail, then create an intricate side plait. Opt for our four-sided braid  for a more stylish and modern touch. Be sure to finish off the look with a hairspray like Dove Style + Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray for hold.

travel-friendly hairstyle twisted hair

3. Twist & Pin Hairstyle

This style is one of the easiest travel-friendly hairstyles to do while you’re en route to your destination. Create a low ponytail then secure with a hair tie. Twist two front sections of your hair, and pull it towards the back of your head. Gather your twisted sections and ponytail together to create a bun.

4. Natural Hair Top Knot

Resting on pillow soft curls while you travel can feel comfy, but sometimes the feeling of your curls grazing across your face and neck can feel annoying. Wrap your hair up into a quick top knot hairstyle. If your curls feel parched, reach for your travel sized oil or hair serum and smooth onto your curls before creating your bun. Try Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil   as this formula works to revive and condition your locks, resulting in shiny and smooth hair. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, undo the bun, give your hair a shake, and let your curls free.

5. Low Undone Side Bun

These days, it’s all about having the perfect in-flight beauty routine that will leave you looking and feeling fresh. Prep your hair before you move onto your in-flight skin care routine. Here’s an easy sheet mask-friendly style (meaning all your hair is out of your face), and a great way to create subtle waves to your ends post-commute. Gather hair into a low side ponytail and loop around, leaving the ends out to create a messy bun. To enhance the wavy effect, opt for some sea salt spray. This formula can create all-over body in your hair and a loose texture that’s designed to last up to 24 hours! Before you begin to disembark, undo the bun and tousle your hair.

Fashionable Travel Hairstyles for Women for Every Season!

BannerImg

No girl in this world can deny the fact that they have this immense love for their hair. We girls honestly are obsessed with our hair. There are different hairstyles for women that women know will look good on them. But there are a few hairstyles for women you probably don’t know of yet, but they will save your hair while travelling. We’ve got your back girls.

Let us walk you through the door you never opened. We will suggest you a hairstyle that will not only save your hair from damage but also are stylish and trendy.

Here are hairstyles for women according to the season:

Winter hairstyles for women:.

Winter is nice weather for your hair. You can style your hair in many ways and not worry about the frizz and heat that your hair faces in summer. But travelling can make your hair face a lot of dryness and dirt that can make your hair frizzy and brittle. What if we give you hairstyles that can actually make your hair face lesser damage? Told ya! Got your back girl! Keep reading!

Short hair:

Parted twists:

This is one of the easiest and quickest hairstyles for women that you can make. It will literally take you a minute to make it. You just have to part your hair from the front in the middle and then take your front hair, twist it, and tie it at the back with a bobby pin. Repeat the same for the other side and TADA! You are done and super ready. This will not only save your hair from the wind but make it less frizzy.

This is your party-ready look and you can carry it with a cute casual outfit

Two space buns

If you are that girl who doesn’t like to spend time on her hair-do and doesn’t like to play with them. Part your hair from the middle into equal halves and make a high bun on each side with the help of a rubber band. Do this and forget about your hair for the rest of the day. Another casual day-ready look that is superbly easy and looks damn cool.

Hairstyles for women in winter

Half up top knot (High)

Hair handling is a pain for you, but style is also important, right? IDEA! Take the first half of your hair and bun it up high. This hairstyle for women is trending for a reason. These days we do not want to spend much time on our hair but still want a look that will make us shine like a star. Well girls, here is what you asked for.

Half up top knot (Low)

Half up top knot (low) is the same as that of half up top knot (high). The only difference is the placement of the bun. This knot is placed at the nape of the neck. The making of the bun is the same as that of the high knot. Take the front part of the hair and tie a half knot at the back of your head and not on the crown.

Dutch braid buns

Every girl must be aware of Dutch braids. It is just the easiest braid that you can make and will not take you more than five minutes.

Dutch boxer braids

These hairstyles for women are comfortable and will not make your hair frizz out when you are on the go. Part your hair into two equal halves and make a Dutch braid on each side.

Dutch boxer braids are the best when you want to protect your hair from city pollution and dryness. Apart from this, your hair looks trendy and casual as ever. This protects your hair and is stylish enough to go with your attire.

Ribbon pony

Your hair is long and pretty. You can easily tie an elastic band on your head to tie your hair into a ponytail and then wrap that band with a ribbon. If you have a wavy hair texture, this is the best and easiest hairstyle for you. This gives a cute look to your hair and personality.

Beach waves

Beach waves are beautifully loose curls that can suit everyday casual, business and event looks. You do not need to tie them up or even bun them up. These are the best, most relaxed hairstyle for you.

Twisted side braid

Twist your front hair to one side and braid them from the side. This will be your twisted side braid. As simple and as beautiful as ever. Go ethnic or go classy, this will make you look gorgeous.

The side braid is another simple and classy way to style your hair and look elegant. Instead of making a dutch braid at the back you make it on the side. You can always accessorize your look with a fancy hairband or a hair clip or even a scarf. This is your everyday classy and beautiful look that only takes a minute or two.

Summer hairstyles for women:

Summers are neither good for your skin nor your hair. You need to take extra care of your skin during summers . Travelling in summer means, dust and sun extended exposure to your skin and hair. You will have to take care of your hair a lot. But apart from that, there are also a few hairstyles that will help you save your hair from the heat and city dirt.

You might also want to know how to take care of your hair when on the go .

Double-ups are two Dutch braids wrapped up to make them into double buns half-up. This hairstyle for women is trendy and super easy to make. Pull them up and forget about taking care of them for the entire day.

Lazy side pony

As the name suggests, this is a lazy ponytail. For every girl, it is super easy to tie a ponytail. All you have to do is grab all your hair and tie them low with an elastic band at the side of your head.

Chasing waterfalls

This hairstyle for women is one of the cutest hairstyles. You might take time to learn this hairstyle but when you do, you will look gorgeous and will make it faster. Chasing waterfalls look beautiful in a full-length dress or a short dress. You do not need any hair accessories to beautify this hairstyle. Chasing waterfall can be a long-hair hairstyle for women too.

The blunt bob is a hairstyle that your hairdresser can make and you can easily use this style in different ways. You can have straight hair or a light curl. Both ways your hair will look amazing and your personality will flourish. A blunt bob is just a haircut. You can always accessorize it using different hair accessories. It is a simple, low-maintenance hairstyle.

Sleek fishtail

Fishtail is a sleek and classy braid that you do not need to think of before making. Fishtails go with any attire and you need only two minutes to make them when you are a pro at making them. And if you are not a pro, with a little practice you can be 🙂

Rope braid ponytail

Ever tried making rope braid ponytail and failed? Yeah! We know. This Particular hairstyle is a beautiful look and is made to look like a rope. Maybe to give you a Rapunzel look. But the final result of it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. You look like a princess and you feel one too.

Bubble ponytail

A bubble ponytail is a fancy ponytail that goes with any attire and makes long hair look beautiful. This is a simple hairstyle and will take you less than 3 minutes to make it. A bubble ponytail helps you to keep your hair intact since the entire hair is tied. So, no chance of frizz.

Double twisted bun

Part your hair in two equal parts and make a twist on each side of your hair and roll them into a bun on each side. That is your double-twisted side bun. This is your party-ready look, any-day travel look or just another day look. You are more than ready girl!

Half-up rope braid

This hairstyle is half open and half rope braided. This gives a beautiful and cute look to your personality. Wear it with any attire and you will just beautify your look, nothing else.

Fishtail braid bun

The fish braid bun is a bun made from fishtail braid. You make a one-sided fishtail braid and wrap the braid into a bun. So that way you combine two hairstyles and prepare a beautiful hairstyle for yourself. Here is how you do it.

Humid hairstyles for women:

Fun fact: The hair follicle is made up of protein, hydrogen, oxygen, and a few other amino acids. The more water content in hair, the straighter the hair is. Which means curly hair is naturally dry. When you head towards a humid destination your hair tends to absorb the moisture in the air and thus become frizzy. Before you jump into hairstyles you might also want to read some tips to maintain frizzy hair and which serum works best.

Here are a few hairstyles for a humid environment, to keep your hair away from the frizz and make them manageable.

Braided bun

Braid is the best way to avoid your hair from getting frizzy. Above I have already given a few hairstyles for braided buns. Try those or style your hair your own way. Braid the sides and bun it later, make multiple braids and bun them all at the back or you can even braid the hair and bun it on the side.

Messy up-do

The most classy and easy hairstyle is the messy updo. This is a raw hairstyle and looks great. It is a hairstyle you can adapt to when you do not want to do much to your hair and still want to look great and stand out from the crowd. This can be a low and a high bun.

Yes, it is as simple as the name shows. Just tie a knot on with your hair and use bobby pins to keep it intact. The tie knot hairstyle is a clean and simple bun hairstyle for women and can be made of half or full of hair.

Funky ponytail

Ponytails are the easiest way to style your hair and all it takes is 3-4 minutes to complete the hairstyle. Here are a few ways in which you can style your hair and still be frizz-free all day long. Go, girl! Style your day.

Milkmaid bun

This is the best hairstyle for women who are travelling to a humid destination. Milkmaid one-side braid keeps your hair intact as no segment of your hair is out in the open. No open equals no frizz.

It might be a little tough to make at first but getting used to it means being a pro day by day. it is also a beautiful hairstyle by the way. Here is what you have to do to make it. Milkmaid one-side bun is the one hairstyle that you can carry with any possible attire while on the go.

We hope you have a great vacation and we also hope that this article helped you manage your bad hair day and convert it into a gorgeous hair day. Let us know in the comments section below and tell us about your experience with these hairstyles.

6 Travel-Friendly Hairstyles For Long Hair

simple travel hairstyles

I have yet to come off of a flight with hair I'm happy to spend the rest of the day in. It's always that awkward combination of being way too dry and way too greasy at the same time. Maybe it's because I haven't taken the time to sport any of the best travel-friendly hairstyles when I'm en route. My hair generally just stays down the whole time, making it more susceptible to not only the effects of the dry air associated with being inside any sort of vehicle for too long, but also the effects of my oily little fingers constantly adjusting and tucking stray pieces. So the result when I emerge at my destination is not cute.

And while a sleek and chic ponytail could usually come to the rescue in a hair crisis, unless you're still comfortable lounging with a hard knot on the back of your head, ponytails just don't cut it when it comes to travel-friendly hair . What we need is the yoga leggings of hairstyles. 'Dos that are cute and comfy, but still keep all hair secure and out of the way is what we need for travel. 'Dos like these:

1. French Braid

A French braid is great for travel because not only does it keep every single piece of hair out of your way, but when you reach your destination, you can undo it for effortless waves . If you're not super confident doing one on yourself, peep this tutorial .

2. Top Knot

Top knots are the ultimate greasy-hair day 'do, but they're also great for keeping your locks on lock while you travel. And because they sit so high on your head, you won't have to worry about messing it up when you're relaxing in your seat.

3. Fishtail Braid

Fishtail braids are so chic and simple. Just pass one section of hair from side to side ( check out this tutorial for more in-depth instructions ), and don't forget to tug on it for extra volume. This is another great style to undo when you arrive to achieve some beachy waves .

4. Low Pigtails

Tying off some low pigtails, or even braiding them, will keep your hair under control and out of the way. And it doesn't really get simpler than this.

5. Milkmaid Braid

For something a little more intricate that still won't get in your way, try Milkmaid braids on for size. Simply braid two low pigtails, and then pin them on top of your head.

6. Double Buns

When one top knot is not enough, add another! Pull your hair into high pigtails, and then wrap the ends of each as you would a regular top knot. Use bobby pins to secure your mini buns in place.

Your traveling hair-game is about to be so on-point.

Travel Hair Tips

Table of contents.

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want to do is spend two hours fixing your hair. You’ve got to make the most of every minute.

Truthfully, though, styled hair and fresh-faced makeup truly add the finishing touch to create a polished appearance to your travel outfit . That’s the real secret to chic style. It doesn’t matter how perfect your travel wardrobe looks if these other factors are missing.

Now this doesn’t mean that you need to bring your entire beauty cabinet on a trip, or start using hair tools if that’s not your thing. It’s just a reminder that you don’t need to skip your hair routine entirely, because you can just bring the essential items that enhance your features for a natural yet chic look.

The goal is to find the easiest hair solution that works for you. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Choose Essential Styling Tools

Don’t pack all your styling tools into your suitcase and never pack a full-size hair brush. Call your accommodation in advance to see if they offer a blow dryer. If not, look for a foldable travel hair dryer . Don’t forget about a mini brush and mini comb.

Unfortunately, mini flat irons aren’t as effective as travel blow dryers, especially if you have extremely curly hair. If needed, pack a slim 1-inch or smaller iron. Also, some flat irons can double up as curling irons like the one shown above. Give it a try! Read our tips on  how to style curly hair while traveling !

It’s important to note that hair styling products may not work in other countries. Look for items with dual voltage to be sure. Keep reading for more information about voltage and adapters.

For bad hair days, these beauty hacks might help:

  • Bun – an easy way to hide dirty or disheveled hair
  • Ponytail – whether you tie it high or low, a ponytail can create a clean and chic appearance on a hot day
  • Bobby Pins – twist it, pin it, hold it down. Do what you have to do with these little wonders
  • Hats – add style and hide bad hair days. What’s not to love?
  • Dry Shampoo (or Baby Powder) – throw it on and shake it out when you’re on the go
  • Headbands – a thin, delicate style can transform you from blah to glam
  • Braids – learn how to create at least one braid look

Heatless Hairstyles

If you decide to leave your tools at home, these are some heatless hairstyle ideas:

  • For volume and waves, pack a few foam curlers  that you can wear overnight to set your hair. Remember, just pack a handful, not a whole set!
  • Do you use claw clips ? If so, after you wash your hair, clip it into a low bun while still wet. It will air dry to create natural looking waves. As a bonus, if you have frizzy curly hair, this method may also create smooth waves instead of tight curls. Add some styling product before tying it back.
  • Create an elegant up do with the sock bun method. Opt for a pre-made bun roller that weighs nothing and can be crammed into a small space if needed. If you leave your hair rolled in a bun for an extended period of time, it can also create volume and waves. Perfect for a day-to-night transition!
  • Similar to a sock bun, braids also result in waves and are a feminine way to style your hair. This style is great for an active trip because it’s feminine yet keeps your hair out of your face.

You can also find hair tutorials for just about anything on Pinterest . Search for short easy hairstyles or simple braid ideas. Alternatively, try out a new look!

Using Hair Styling Tools Abroad

One of the biggest questions about voltage arises from hair styling equipment.  Is it okay to use you hair dryer or flat iron in Europe?

The answer? Maybe.

Having the right voltage is crucial when you use electronics abroad including your hair tools. Because blow dryers and flat irons (straighteners) require a large amount of power, you need to look for products with  dual voltage  options.

Read our full explanation on how voltage works when you travel and which adapters/converters to use!

Need to find ways to dry your hair quickly? Try these  tips !

travel-hair-tips

T3 Singlepass

Dual voltage electronics have two voltage options: 110-120V and 220-240V.  They are ideal for travel because they are safe to use at home and abroad, too.

Some electronics, such as newer Macbooks and iPhones have dual voltage that automatically adjust in their destination. However, other electronics such as hair tools  you may need to adjust the voltage manually by moving a switch.

Voltage refers to electricity; different countries have different types of electricity. This means that your electronics are the same voltage as the country in which you bought them so if you take them to another country, they may not work. Visit  this  website for a full list of voltage by country.

For example, in the US we use 110-120V whereas in Europe they use 220-240V. If we plug our electronics into each other’s outlets they can blow a fuse and stop working. In some cases, they can even fry your hair.

Keep in mind that this does not always guarantee your hair styling tool will work as well abroad as it does at home, even with the dual voltage setting. Flat irons generally work well but hair dryers tend to experience more issues!

travel-hair-tips

Conair Ceramic Mini Curling Iron

To ensure you won’t have voltage problems, buy one there.

The ideal situation would be to pack a foldable travel blow dryer with dual voltage options like the ones shown above. However, this feature doesn’t always guarantee it won’t blow a fuse when you arrive ruining your dryer and possibly frying your hair. Sometimes it’s better to buy locally at the airport or drug store.

Dealing with changes in voltage can be concerning to some travelers especially if you’re headed to  Europe . To avoid voltage issues with travel blow dryers, it might be easiest to buy one upon arrival especially if you plan to spend an extended period of time in your destination.

Here are a couple lists of dual voltage hair tools:

  • Best Dual Voltage Flat Iron
  • Best Travel Dryer with Dual Voltage
  • Best Travel Curling Iron
Visit  this website for a full list of voltage by country!

travel-hair-tips

Compass Rose International Travel Adapter  for products that are  dual voltage

Don’t Forget an Adapter (NOT a Converter)

It’s important to understand that an adaptor and converter are NOT the same thing. An adapter fits the outlets and a  converter  changes the electrical current.

Travel adapters don’t work well with hair tools that are not dual voltage. You need a converter for hair tools that are not dual voltage.

If your hair tool requires a converter ( it’s not dual voltage ) then it’s best to leave it at home, buy one that is dual voltage, or buy one at your destination. While there are some travel-friendly converters like this one, they’re usually only good for products up to 50 watts (hair tools are higher than this).

Note: if you decide to try to use a converter abroad you’ll also need an adapter so you can plug it into the local outlets! (See below)

travel-hair-tips

Travel Converter  for products that are not dual voltage

If your hair tool is dual voltage, then you do not need a converter . What you will need for your hair tools and all electronics is an adapter, which allows your devices to plug into various outlets abroad.

If you’re traveling to several countries during your trip, or if you are a frequent flyer, you may want to use a universal travel adaptor like this one.

However, if you only have one stop on your trip, just pack an individual adapter for that country’s plug type. Visit this power outlet guide for travelers to see a full list of plugs and outlets by country.

Remember, an adaptor does not convert voltage, it just allows you to plug your electronics into the local outlet. Always check the voltage for all your electronics. Learn more here!

Travel Hair Care

Aside from styling your hair, one of the other challenges when trying to pack light is limiting toiletries. But how do you limit shampoo when you can easily use up an entire travel size bottle in one shower?

Unless you are absolutely married to your hair shampoo, this is the one place where you can easily save space as many hotels and even some Airbnbs offer shampoo as part of their amenities.

If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, purchase shampoo as you go and if you’re traveling for a weekend, take a travel size bottle. You can also decant your favorite shampoo into a reusable bottle like this.

travel-hair-tips

Lush Godiva Solid Shampoo Bar

A popular option for female travelers is to travel with a solid shampoo bar . They’re great if you’re traveling for a long time because they can last up to 50 washes. As a bonus, they’re also handy if you want to eliminate liquids.

Unfortunately, there aren’t that many solid conditioners . A few ideas to downsize your products are to use a 2-in-1 shampoo conditioner or opt for a multi-use product such as coconut oil. You can use natural oils for a variety of things from hair care to skincare. Learn more!

Take a look at these solid toiletries for travel !

Easy travel hairstyle how-to: the twist and pin updo.

' src=

The following is an easy travel hairstyles tip from the fabulous Christina Butcher, otherwise known as the hair behind Hair Romance .

Hair Romance - easy twist & pin updo for curly hair

This Twist & Pin hairstyle will change your mind.

It’s much easier to create than it looks, and will have everybody asking, “How did you do that?”

It’s perfect for those days when your natural curls are looking more than a little messy. It works in straight hair too.

You can pin your hair up in less than two minutes to create this simple style.

The Twist & Pin is a great way to hide your “second-day hair” when you don’t have time to wash it.

All you need to pack are some bobby pins to do this updo.

Hair Romance - curly Twist Pin updo

How to get the look

  • Start by taking a one-inch section of hair near your left temple and twist it around your finger. Twist it around into a mini bun at the back of your head and pin in place with a bobby pin.
  • Repeat with a section from the right side, and twist and pin in place. It helps to twist with one finger, and then use your other index finger to hold the twist down so you can make the bun.
  • Continue twisting and pinning your hair across into mini buns at the back of your head. Try and keep the sections even, so you have evenly-sized twists.
  • Finish the style by pinning the final sections of hair at the nape of your neck.

Hair Romance - Keep your curls under control - easy twist & pin updo

This hairstyle is infinitely customizable to your hair, so adjust it to suit you. Place your part where it sits naturally or pull all your hair back. If you have bangs/fringe, you can leave them out or pin them loosely to the side.

The Twist & Pin also keeps your hair out of your way if you’re backpacking . Nothing worse that getting your hair caught under your bag straps – ouch!

I wish I could do these hairstyles, but with my straight, fine hair it never looks right. Plus, I’ve never really learned to master the bobby pin. Guess I better get practising!

Spanish Getaway: 3 Insta-Worthy Travel Hairstyles

When you're on vacation, especially in beautiful Barcelona, you want to spend at little time as possible on your hair, and as much time as possible exploring the breathtaking sights, soaking up the culture, or indulging in the local cuisine. It goes without saying that you also want your hair to be on its A-game for the Instagram photos you capture while enjoying all of the above.

Situated on Costa Brava, Barcelona is full of life, with a thriving culture of art, world-class restaurants, and of course, breathtaking beaches that stretch all the way to the French border.

Our beautiful friend Josie was recently lucky enough to go on her own getaway to Barcelona, and shares her top three hairstyles that not only do the scenery justice, but take only a few minutes, so you can spend less time curling, and more time twirling under the Spanish sun.

View Josie's travel diary and hair tutorials below—she's added her 220g Dirty Blonde Luxy Hair extensions for added length and volume to these looks.

Hairstyle 1: Voluminous hair with loose curls

Easy travel hairstyles

You can never go wrong with classic curls, elevated with Luxy  Hair extensions for beautiful volume. This hairstyle is perfect for those days spent strolling Las Ramblas street, watching street performers and immersing yourself the human heartbeat of this magnificent city.

Easy travel hairstyles

Start off by clipping in your Luxy Hair extensions, which are what's going to take this hairstyle to the next level. Since Josie has thicker hair, she stacks her wefts on top of each other to create more volume at the bottom, but feel free to disperse the wefts around your head as you see fit.

Easy travel hairstyles

With a 1" to 1 1/2" curling wand, start curling your hair with the extensions. To ensure that your hair blends seamlessly with the extensions, incorporate some of your natural hair in with the Luxies, curling them together. Leave about 2 inches off the end so that the curl has a more beachy vibe, keeping the hair wrapped around the curling wand for about 5 seconds (more if you have thicker or coarse hair).

Easy travel hairstyles

Before setting your hair free, hold the curl in your hand and let it cool down. This will help the curl set and make it more bouncy, ensuring that it holds during your days exploring.

Easy travel hairstyles

Continue this process until all your hair is curled. Then, once all the curls have cooled down, rake your fingers through your hair, loosening up and breaking up the curls.

Give your hair a quick, gentle brush, add a spritz of hairspray, and you're good to go!

Easy travel hairstyles

Hairstyle 2: twisted ponytail

Easy travel hairstyles

A twist on the humble ponytail (pun intended), this travel hairstyle is perfect for a romantic barefoot stroll on  Barceloneta  Beach with the warm, salty air.

If you're wearing Luxies for this hairstyle (which we recommend you should!), take out any wefts toward the front of your head.

Pull out a few bang pieces that will frame your face once you've finished the hairstyle. Then, take a 1 1/2 inch section of hair and begin creating a French twist.

Easy travel hairstyles

Split the section into two then twist the hair twice. Continue twisting the strand, adding a bit of hair to the bottom half everytime you twist.

Once you've reached your ear, finish off by twisting the strand normally until the bottom. Either tie off the end with a hair tie or with a clip, to keep the twists secure.

Repeat steps 2 – 4, then pancake the twists, pulling at them slightly to create more volume and romance. Once you have both twists complete, clip them together at the front of your face while you work on the ponytail. (Yes, you will look like you have a twisted beard for a second, but it's all part of the fun!)

Easy travel hairstyles

Gather the rest of your hair into a ponytail, then carefully add each twist into the ponytail and tie the whole thing off.

Since you're on vacation, you can spice this style up with a headscarf or even some flowers to go along with the local culture's vibe. Bellisima!

Hairstyle 3: voluminous double side braid .

Easy travel hairstyles

While Barcelona is filled with shopping and good eats, it is also home to Mt. Tibidabo, featured in one of our favorite films, Vicky Christina Barcelona. With your hair out of your face and ready for a hike, bask in the views from the top of this mountain and be sure to visit the Temple of the Sacred Heart while you're there.

Create a deep side part, then start Dutch braiding your hair, slowly working in the hair from the other side of your head as your braid.

Easy travel hairstyles

Once you reach the nape of your neck and all loose pieces have been incorporated into the braid, you're going to Fishtail braid the rest of the hair. Instead of crossing each strand over, however, cross the strand under , to continue the pattern of the Dutch braid for a seamless transition.

Tie off the ends, pancake the braid, and enjoy your day out in beautiful Barcelona!

Easy travel hairstyles

Whether you're visiting Barcelona or someplace else, we hope we've inspired you with these travel hairstyles. Be sure to share your travel stories with us and your hairstyle recreations by tagging #luxyhair on Instagram. Happy travels!
