Owning a private island or beach resort is common among large cruise lines and is something many passengers have come to expect. CocoCay in the Bahamas (once called “Little Stirrup Cay”) is a private island owned by Celebrity’s parent company, Royal Caribbean.

Celebrity used to stop at this private island, but is not currently offering any itineraries that include CocoCay .

Evening Chic

You may be familiar with formal nights on other cruise lines, where passengers are expected to dress up for the evening. On Celebrity, formal nights have been replaced with Evening Chic nights . These nights are somewhere in between smart casual and formal.

On Evening Chic nights, women will want to choose a cocktail dress or a skirt, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top. Men will want to choose pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater. Blazers or sports jackets are optional.

Hot Tip: There are 1 to 2 Evening Chic nights on every Celebrity cruise except for Celebrity Xpedition, which sails exclusively in the Galapagos Islands and features casual attire only.

Bottom Line: Beverage packages are priced per person, per day, and must be purchased for every day of your cruise. They can’t be shared and they don’t apply to beverages sold in gift shops, the mini-bar, or room service. A 20% service charge will be added to some packages . Bottom Line: Celebrity’s loyalty club, Captain’s Club, offers perks based on your stateroom level and the number of nights you sail. You can expect some nice onboard benefits like complimentary internet, laundry, and beverage packages, but you won’t find free or discounted cruises as a benefit.

Do I have to dress up on a Celebrity cruise?

Here’s what you need to know about every Celebrity Cruises ship.

Celebrity Cruises is among our readers' favorite mega-ship ocean lines — coming in at No. 1 in 2022 and No. 2 in 2023 as part of our World's Best Awards (WBA) — and it's easy to see why. This WBA Hall of Fame honoree truly shines with its sophisticated, tasteful decor and sleek onboard spaces, including swanky lounges, dazzling bars, gourmet specialty restaurants, and contemporary suites. Almost all Celebrity ships, except the three Xpedition-class vessels, offer standard amenities like casinos, retail shops, spas, and Broadway-level shows and entertainment. There's also the adults-only Solarium and The Retreat, the latter of which is reserved exclusively for suite guests. With a fleet of 16 ships, it can be tricky to determine which Celebrity ship is best suited for your specific needs.Travel advisor Kari Becker of Marvelous Mouse Travels explains, "Whatever your taste, there is a perfect Celebrity cruise to meet your needs." She continues, telling T+L, "There are three main classes: the Edge, Solstice, and Millennium classes, all with unique features, benefits, and advantages." The Millennium-class ships are smaller which, per Becker, may "offer a more personalized experience." Solstice is the largest class of Celebrity's fleet, says Becker. "When designed, these ships focused on innovation, with unique spaces including a real grass lawn, and unique onboard experiences, such as glass-making classes." Last but not least is Celebrity's Edge class. Per the pro, the ships in the line's newest class are "the largest of the fleet, offering more space for additional experiences and restaurants, including a massive pool deck, floating platform at sea (aptly called the Magic Carpet), and Rooftop Garden." All in all, she says, "The Edge series is for guests looking for transformative cruising and splendor with countless gourmet restaurants and immersive entertainment."

Celebrity Ascent

Inaugural Year: 2023

Ship Class: Edge 

Ship Capacity: 3,260 passengers

Celebrity’s newest ship is also its flashiest — in the best way possible. The Celebrity Ascent offers an expanded Retreat area (exclusive to suite guests), complete with a 40-percent-larger two-story sundeck, and the swanky Sunset Bar, which is 180 percent larger. Beyond The Retreat, there are 32 bars, restaurants, and lounges, a lush Rooftop Garden, an adults-only Solarium, the three-level Eden restaurant and entertainment venue, and the Magic Carpet, a floating platform that reaches 13 stories above sea level. Finally, stay in one of the Iconic Suites, the largest in the Celebrity fleet, for the ultimate splurge. 

Celebrity Beyond

Inaugural Year: 2022

Celebrity Beyond is nearly identical to Celebrity Ascent . Both Edge-class sister ships have the same spectacular amenities and features, including a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center that’s sure to impress wellness-seekers, who will also be happy in one of the AquaClass Sky Suites, which offer in-room yoga mats and fitness equipment. It’s also worth noting that these suite guests also enjoy access to the SEA Thermal Suite and a dedicated spa concierge. Don’t miss the adults-only Solarium, the Rooftop Garden, the aforementioned Eden, or the Magic Carpet, which offers the best views at sea.

Paul Brady was onboard the Beyond in October 2022. “My stateroom, 9164, was a Sky Suite, with a king bed facing a private terrace and a clever roll-open mirror that let natural light into the spacious bathroom. Dining at the Daniel Boulud restaurant Le Voyage was one highlight — with seven courses — but so too were casual cocktails at Sunset Bar, with its touch of Moroccan design influence courtesy of Nate Berkus, who dreamed up the multi-level lounge,” said Brady of his experience.  

Celebrity Apex

Inaugural Year: 2020

Ship Capacity: 2,910 passengers

The second Edge-class ship, Celebrity Apex , made its grand debut in 2020. It boasts an abundance of stylish onboard spaces, including the Rooftop Garden and the adults-only Solarium. Access to the exclusive Retreat area is reason alone to book one of the contemporary suites. Other highlights include the dazzling three-story Grand Plaza, where you’ll find the aptly named Martini Bar, one of 29 bars, lounges, and restaurants aboard Apex , along with the orange-hued Magic Carpet, which offers live music and a full bar 13 feet above sea level.  

“I was fortunate to snag one of just a handful of Royal Suites on the ship, 12105, which had the look of a chic coastal Florida cottage, elevated with pops of bright green, geometric tiling, and contemporary art on the walls. The bathroom, with a deep soaking tub and spacious shower, rivaled any I’ve seen at land-based resorts,” said Brady of his November 2021 sailing. “Same with the Grand Plaza at the heart of the ship, a gathering place with a hotel lobby vibe in the best possible sense — and a glitzy Martini Bar.”

Celebrity Flora

Inaugural Year: 2019

Ship Class: Xpedition 

Ship Capacity: 100 passengers

Cruise the Galapagos in style aboard Celebrity Flora , which made its maiden voyage in 2019. The vessel was designed with sustainability in mind: It's built with natural materials and features anchorless technology to protect the seabed. Certified naturalists from Galapagos National Park are on board to help guests gain a better understanding of the region for an educational trip. The ship also offers a once-in-a-lifetime glamping experience, which includes dinner and drinks, a naturalist-guided stargazing session, accommodations in a cabana-turned-double bed, and a private breakfast. Plus, with its all-suite accommodations, the small ship has a mega-yacht feel.

Celebrity Edge

Inaugural Year: 2018

Ship Capacity: 2,918 passengers

This sophisticated ship — the first in Celebrity’s Edge class — changed the game following its 2018 debut. What’s more, Edge was the very first Celebrity ship to feature the Magic Carpet, the multifunctional Eden, and the Infinite Veranda Staterooms, which, with the touch of a button, transform your living space into your very own private balcony.

Celebrity Reflection

Ship Class: Solstice 

Ship Capacity: 3,046 passengers

The fifth, final, and largest Solstice-class cruise ship, Celebrity Reflection , will impress even the pickiest of travelers with its onboard activities, amenities, and spaces, including a total of 22 bars, restaurants, and lounges. In addition to The Retreat (reserved exclusively for suite guests) and The Solarium (adults-only), Reflection — along with all Solstice-class ships — boasts the Lawn Club. The adults-only Persian Garden area at the spa is a favorite amongst wellness enthusiasts.

Celebrity Silhouette

Inaugural Year: 2011

Ship Capacity: 2,902 passengers

Celebrity Silhouette is elegant in every sense, from the aptly named Grand Foyer — with its marvelous marble floors, extravagant staircase (which is prime for photo opportunities), and the first panoramic oceanview glass elevators at sea — to stylish lounges like The Hideaway or the natural light-filled Sky Lounge. While suite guests gain exclusive access to The Retreat, anyone can relax in one of the swanky pool areas or the laid-back Lawn Club. Then, when hunger — or thirst — calls, passengers can take their pick of over 20 food and drink options.

Celebrity Eclipse

Inaugural Year: 2010

An impressive modern art collection, an expansive spa, a half-acre lawn, and top-notch dining: Find all this and more aboard Celebrity Eclipse , which debuted in 2010. This Solstice-class vessel also boasts an onboard nightclub, popular among party-centric travelers, a striking Grand Foyer, and, last but not least, the Solstice Club. Celebrity Equinox

Refurbished in 2019, Celebrity Equinox exudes cool. On board this stylish ship, guests can sip cocktails in style at one of several hip bars, including the Martini Bar and Slush, enjoy a picnic lunch or practice their golf swing at the half-acre Lawn Club, or soak up the sun at the adults-only Solarium or the plush lounge-lined pool area. The ship also has a handful of specialty dining restaurants (in addition to complimentary ones, of course). Le Petit Chef is well worth the added fee thanks to a combination of gourmet eats and exhilarating entertainment complete with tabletop animations.

Celebrity Millennium

Don’t sleep on Celebrity’s oldest ship, which includes a handful of fan-favorite amenities and spaces such as The Retreat, the Solarium, the Rooftop Terrace, and the Grand Foyer. Last refurbished in 2019, Millennium now features a more contemporary design aesthetic, similar to what you’d find on the newer ships. There are also more than 15 bars and restaurants on board.

The biggest Celebrity cruise ships are, as you might expect, the Celebrity ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars, showrooms and decktop pool zones. They also have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Celebrity cruise fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 3,000 passengers or more, the biggest Celebrity ships are like floating versions of the big resorts you find on land in places like Orlando or Las Vegas, although they're not quite as large as the very biggest resorts on land or sea (for the latter, you'd probably want to try a Royal Caribbean or MSC Cruises vessel). If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, the biggest Celebrity Cruises ships are the Celebrity ships for you.

Still, Celebrity doesn't just operate large vessels. The Miami-based cruise brand also markets several relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or so people and have a much more intimate feel. Are bigger Celebrity Cruises ships coming?

Not right now. Celebrity Cruises currently has two new cruise ships on order. However, each of the vessels is projected to be roughly the same size as the recently unveiled Celebrity Beyond — about 141,000 tons.

That size estimate can change, of course, as construction on the ships draws closer to completion. Celebrity might add elements to the ships that increase their size.

The first of the two ships on order, Celebrity Ascent, is due to start sailing in December 2023. It will be followed by an as-yet-unnamed vessel in 2025.

The two Celebrity Cruises ships on order will be the fourth and fifth ships in Celebrity's Edge-class series of vessels that began debuting in 2018. The first three ships in the series are Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond.

The Edge-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Celebrity Cruises ships?

The biggest Celebrity cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Celebrity ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Celebrity's biggest vessel, Celebrity Beyond, for instance, you'll find an expanded "resort-within-a-resort" area for suite passengers called The Retreat that isn't on the smaller vessels in the same Edge-class series or on other smaller ships in the Celebrity fleet. It offers a new two-story sun deck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that are open exclusively to passengers staying in suites.

Celebrity Beyond also has 179 more cabins than its smaller sister vessels, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge, which each have 1,467 cabins. As a result, it holds 3,260 passengers at double occupancy. That's up from a 2,910-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Apex and a 2,908-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Edge.

Celebrity's smaller Millennium-class ships, by contrast, only carry about 2,100 passengers at double occupancy. As a result, they have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships.

That makes the latter vessels a good choice for someone who wants to try Celebrity but isn't eager to travel with big crowds. The smaller ships in the Celebrity fleet thus appeal to a subset of Celebrity fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Before You Board

• Travelers must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the completion of their cruise (or three months for cruises with ports in the European Union). If you are on a voyage that begins and ends at the same port in the U.S., you will only need a government-issued photo ID or a birth certificate. Consult Celebrity's  FAQ page  to determine if (based on your nationality and travel plans) you need to acquire a visa before sailing.  
• Along with your passport, remember to bring necessary health documentation, like an inoculation certificate. Vaccination requirements vary by destination. Celebrity advises passengers to consult the  website .
• To expedite the process, you can check-in online up to three days prior to departure. In-person check-in is required at least two hours before your scheduled sail time. You must board the ship at least one hour before your cruise departs. 
• Celebrity recommends booking port excursions and dinner reservations through your Celebrity account before your cruise begins. Travelers can also book dinner reservations and shore excursions once they board the ship. To book dinner reservations during your cruise, call or visit the restaurant's maitre d'. Additionally, Specialty Dining Packages must be purchased at least two days before your departure date.

Deserve a much higher rating

I do not understand why they have such a low rating. I have cruised with many cruise lines including Disney virgin and Royal Caribbean and I have to say the customer service and celebrity is as good as it is on Disney which is the market leader. We went on the celebrity apex out of Southampton and had an amazing four night cruise. The food was exceptional as well as the service at every level. My only gripe would be with the lack of real entertainment in the evenings other than the shows which were two closely scheduled together making it impossible to see both they only had one musician on board playing guitar and lacked a piano player or something similar in one of the bars. But that is a small gripe.

The Beyond Celebrity Ship is aptly named because it was beyond our expectations in almost every way. It began with a warm welcome into the Retreat private waiting area where Eva completed ID check and provided good information for our cruise. From meeting our personal butleress, Rhona, who was amazing, ( sweet and service 5 star) and Edy who was a detailed and friendly man who took care of our room to the staff at The Retreat’s exclusive restaurant, Luminaire, service was outstanding . Victor in the Luminaire stands out for his exuberance and kindness as well as knowledge of menu and drinks. He is a delight. His positivity was contagious. Ohran and Strajinga were very engaging and provided good service and conversation.😁 Hi guys! Rolando was a hard worker and always ready to take care of our order. There was a young lady, Raginah, who never stopped working. She took care of us and others at The Retreat pool and then she appeared in the Retreat Lounge and then I saw her wiping down windows and glass doors. She is a whirlwind worker and as sweet as can be. I hope Celebrity acknowledges these standouts. Let me not forget Caesar and Prasheen from the Retreat Lounge Bar. Caesar wins at dancing at silent disco. He has some crazy moves. They are both so funny. We just wanted to hang out with them. (Love ya guys.) I also noticed Captain Leo taking the time to be outside wishing us a great day at our ports. Nice gesture. Negatives: Bartenders at Martini bar as well as other bars seemed disconnected. On other cruises, I have found them to be some of the friendliest of staff, upbeat and have big personalities. Not on this Celebrity cruise (btw this was my first Celebrity Cruise and we were Retreat guests). Many times they actually ignored people waiting to order. Also very understaffed in Retreat Pool bar and slow service until after 11:30am. The selections at Oceanview Cafe buffet was the best I’ve seen. Italian, Indian, Asian, American, Latin, Mexican… pastries, breads, desserts and ice cream bar. Pool whether in the Retreat or Main pool and even Solarium tended to have those people who just stayed in and drank and talked most of the day. Annoying. I stayed in Retreat and enjoyed the quiet and slipped into the jacuzzi with beautiful view. Before I write a novella, in closing, I highly recommend Celebrity Retreat Suite level.

Booked what I understood to be a 12…

Booked what I understood to be a 12 night Alaskan cruise. When I received confirmation it was a 7 night. Went through the horrible process of calling them to cancel less than 48 hours after booking. They refused refund even though I was a regular customer. Now I see on the confirmation that they added an additional $1200 for vacation protection which I did not ask for. I don't recognize who these people are anymore. Need to chop heads beginning at the top and reset the culture of this company. Will be looking elsewhere going forward

I’m on the celebrity celebration as I write this.1st time on celebrity 8 times on Royal Caribbean.11 day cruise in Europe the gym sanitation wipes have been out for 2 days,so much for health protocols ,the app is the absolute worst you can’t do everything thing that the app says is supposed to do like make and alter reservations, the food is terrible the burgers poolside are always chard beyond belief the choices for dinner are the same thing every night where’s the lobster?? The drinks are always short poured even with the premium package and tonight I order 2 glasses of vueve chliquot in the “wine celler bar”and they ran out of cold vueve what a joke .definitely last cruise on celebrity … forgot to mention the premium internet another joke you get kick off all the time and have to keep signing back in… annoying

Norovirus instead of dream cruise

7 days into the cruise I caught Norovirus which had been going around. It was utter misery made worse by staff failure to contact medical team as my husband requested 3 times. We are in a suite and get Retreat services. It was only after the 4th phone call to Retreat concierge with my husband begging for help as I lay on the bathroom floor in my own sick that the Retreat concierge bothered to contact the medical team. The medical team were excellent. I got IV fluids and medication. I was extremely dehydrated. The Retreat concierge staff failure to help is unforgivable. This is not the holiday we dreamt of.

So many mistakes made by Celebrity X & they still can't provide correct invoice, final payment due in 7 days! This has been going on for 6 months. Have rang & emailed numerous times to no avail! Incapable of providing timescale or advise who is managing this. Speak to someone different everytime. Very frustrating & stressful. Even my written complaints have not been acknowledged. I would give zero stars as the service goes beyond poor.

Beware of costs

We went on a cruise with Celebrity had a fantastic time, ship great, crew great everything great until we got home! I had settled our account on the ship the evening prior to departure and they gave me an invoice clearly showing zero balance.then when we got home they took the whole amount for the account again! This has been dragging for over 2 months I now have the bank involved because Celebrity will not accept that they been paid twice! Whilst on the ship we paid £150 deposit towards a future cruise but as we had so many issues with Celebrity I now want to cancel and gain a refund for this deposit which seems like another mammoth task to try and get anyone at Celebrity to help. Be very careful with Celebrity they do not appear to care that they are taking money from your bank without permission and then do not want to refund!

Very expensive for a solo traveller

Cruise very expensive ( double !) for a solo …..flew business class with KLM from UK to Buenos Aires….very expensive!!!!! All the places visited were incredible….Argentina, the Falklands, Ushuaia, Drake Passage, etc b…. Once in a lifetime experience …. Insurance Co would not allow me to go on my preferred ship. So had to go with a large cruise line !

Celebrity Eclipse Buenos Aires to Rio

Just returned from 7 days cruise on Celebrity Eclipse from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro. Pre Cruise arrangements couldn't be faulted. Boarding process smooth. Onboard - cabins clean but one major downside, there were no charging points near bed in cabin. They were concentrated at the table next to TV. Show quality was good. One major fault that needs correcting is Celebrity's inability to recognise Global Money Visa Debit cards on their onboard charging system. This really needs to be fixed, luckily I had a credit card with me but it meant incurring extortionate unnecessary forex charges. Also be very careful with buying the drink package. If you like cocktails, there are very very few included in the classic package and you'll be charged extra! Ports of call could have been more varied. Sao Paulo is industrial and has very little of interest so tours concentrate on the Coffee Museum which quite frankly was a bore. We missed Punta Arenas due to bad weather and this was substituted with Ilhabela which has nothing of interest within a short distance of the port.

Avoid the infinity

Avoid the infinity. Celebrity is quite big scam now... they do all the speak of luxury etc thinking their customers must be thick... but what you see in reality is more like Costa cruises! Seriously... the ship was dirty and falling apart. Hair in dining room napkins... the floor got filthy and no one cleaned.... the plates came out of dish washer filthy...a whole stack of them.... I'm really disappointed to hear the same of millennium as going on that thinking it was better

This company is nothing but a scam

This company is nothing but a scam. We have had the worst experience ever. We booked our next trip on board upon promise of good rates to Japan. 400 $ was transferred, but according to them, they could not find it, even though my bank gave them the documents. After many calls and complaints I gave up the whole thing after three months. They could not find the funds and automatically the trip is cancelled according to the contract. Now three months prior to the trip they suddenly ask if I want to upgrade my cabin, while we long time ago planned something else. Now they are so rude and send us an invoice. I will use lawyer to get them off the business in at least Norway. Avoid this cruise line. Aside from all the irresponsible booking system, the food quality the elite feeling they used to have is gone. Just ridiculous low quality service and food.

Disappointing Hotel. We have just arrived from Heathrow into…

We have just arrived from Heathrow for our two day stay in The Hotel Gambrinus Roma . Very disappointing . Poor location, Very basic, soulless hotel. Hard bed and inefficient air conditioning. I hope this is our only complaint on our Celebrity Greek Islands and Turkey cruise commencing on the 28th September. It certainly doesn’t match the five star cruise we chose. Regards Maureen

Avoid Celebrity Cruises

Would never recommend Celebrity Cruises - when we were on their Norwegian cruise last year we were 'encouraged' to sign up for a cruise in 2024 and we had 6 months to cancel and get back the refund. We contacted them via email & phone numerous times within the 6 months to request the refund and cancel the cruise but never heard back from anybody! All a scam!

Pearl Island bahamas..

I would not recommend anyone from any cruise ship to go on this tour. Totally disorganised. Poor quality sun loungers. They ran out of food. We never found the snorklling guide as promised. The island was totally overcrowded with people from 3 cruise ships. Drinks were additional and over priced. The worst cruise excursion I've ever been on. People on the ship still discussing how bad it was the following day. I have given 1star because the sail to and from the island was interesting notwithstanding there was a mechanical fault with the boat which was also worrying.

Kicked off Silhouette

Kicked off Silhouette last week in Tenerife, Canary Islands because my wife (double vaxed & tripple boosted) tested herself and got a positive reading. She did the right and required thing, masked & confined herself to our cabin and reported it. Big mistake. Third day into a 3-5 day virus we were put off the ship at my wife's sickest and most contageous. What an ordeal ensued, 64 hours of pain, discomfort, stress and anger. Wrong move, Celebrity! We came aboard 'negative' and healthy. Your actions exacerbated my wife's illness and lengthened her recovery period. Shame on you!

Daylight Robbery

Booked a cruise and within a few weeks of booking they removed one stop, changed another stop to a poorer choice and then made new poorer stop into an overnight stay. This wasn’t the cruise we booked. Customer service wasn’t interested I had back and forth emails and in the end they said they would half the admin fee to change the cruise. The issue is when you transfer the booking it’s actually more expensive than to cancel, lose £300 deposit and book a new one with better discounts ! Stupid situation caused by them. Basically now lost £300 because they changed the cruise. Just so you know the changes were made many months before we sail so it wasn’t a weather or issue whilst on board which I would have accept if that was the case. Never sailed with them and don’t intend to ever with this absolute farce. They supposed to be a premium company I wouldn’t put them anywhere near premium based on this experience. I should have just given some random person £300.

Nice cabin but so expensive

Nice cabin, staff friendly but it's pr7ce gouging at its finest. Gratuity before you leave, added to every bill and extra to wanted to. Internet 45 dollars a day. Was thinking of doing another cruise but not now.

Their customer service in non-existant

Their customer service is non-existant. I've been on holdr over 47 minutes after entering the "call-back" line- only to not get a customer service supervisor as requested. When I again requested supervisor - gal said absolutely nothing and my clock on my phone is approaching 60 minutes on hold. Oh! Joy at exactly 57 minutes the call disconnected. Starting over again...will never book on this cruiseline again.

We had to cancel our trips

We had to cancel our cruise with celebrity cruises due to an unforeseen family emergency situation where we had no choice but to cancel our holiday. We booked through a holiday agency it was 5 months before the sailing date!. We had pre booked trips for the cruise to Celebrity costing over £500. When we asked for a refund they withheld our money saying it was their policy for cancellation! NEVER prebook trips with this company they will keep your money if you cancel!

Why the journey is the destination when it comes to Alaska cruises

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person. 

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. 

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views. 

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship. 

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.

Actions in response to the outbreak

In response to the outbreak, Celebrity Cruises and the crew aboard the ship reported the following actions:

• Collected stool specimens from gastrointestinal illness cases for testing.
• Isolated ill passengers and crew.
• Staged disembarkation for active cases to limit the opportunity of illness transmission to well guests.
• Sanitation of terminal and transport infection control procedures.

VSP remotely monitored the situation, including review of the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

Gastrointestinal illness is a commonly used term for acute gastroenteritis (AGE). Cruise ships report cases that meet our case definition for AGE. We define a reportable case of AGE as

• Three or more loose stools within a 24-hour period or what is more than normal for that person OR
• Vomiting along with one of the following symptoms: diarrhea, muscle ache, headache, abdominal cramp, or fever.

Case totals

Cases reported are totals for the entire voyage. It does not mean all people are sick at the same time, such as when they arrive or leave a port or ship.

The Vessel Sanitation Program helps the cruise ship industry prevent and control the introduction and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships.

I'm a cruise musician on an adults-only ship. I make $4,000 each month and get to travel the world — but there are drawbacks too.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with English musician Jack Nolan, 32, about his experiences living and working on cruise ships over the last seven years. Nolan runs a TikTok account detailing his life on the high seas. The following has been edited for length and clarity. 

I'm currently on the Valiant Lady, which is a Virgin Voyages ship. We're sailing around the Mediterranean for the summer.

Almost every day you wake up in a new place. It's amazing to have the opportunity to travel and get paid for it, as well. I don't think there are many jobs where you can meet so many people from all over the world. And we're all here to do the same thing, which is enjoy the perks of working on a cruise.

My passion for music led me to a life at sea

I grew up loving music. Ever since I was a kid, I was always into rock music and bands. My dad put a guitar in my hands when I was about 9 years old and taught me songs he knew from his favorite bands.

I went to university to study music and I met a bunch of musicians. From there, I joined bands. I was playing in wedding bands and original bands.

Then I met a drummer who was a bit older than me and had already been on the ships. He was starting his own cruise ship band and he asked me if I wanted to play guitar. 

Cruises don't directly hire the bands, they go through an agent. So, we just needed an initial in. Our drummer already knew the process of how to get a cruise ship gig , so he led the way. He knew that, as a brand new band, we needed to film some content to use to apply to the right agents.

We would rehearse and record as much of the rehearsal as possible. We even put on a gig ourselves and funded it just so we could record a crowd clapping between some of the songs.

It took a good four or five months of waiting. But luckily, it worked. It got us a gig on Celebrity Cruises. We were on Celebrity cruises from 2016 all the way until the start of 2022. After that, me and the keyboard player joined Virgin in May 2022.

I currently play guitar in a band on an adults-only ship

The bread and butter of our performances is playing as a five-piece band: guitar, drums, bass guitar, keyboards, and lead singer. 

We have a large rep of songs and genres that we play, a real mix of mid-tempo songs and upbeat tunes. We play everything from Elvis to Etta James to Bruno Mars to Daft Punk. 

We play two or three hours a day. They have us break into acoustic trios and duos and sometimes I do solo guitar sets. It's not strenuous at all. We have one day off each week, as well. 

It depends on if I've played late the night before, but sometimes I'll actually wake up around noon because we've played until almost 2 a.m.

If we're in port, I'll go out and explore. If it's a sea day, I'll hit up the gym. There's honestly so much free time, especially on this ship. It's quite incredible. 

We're playing usually from 5 or 6 p.m. throughout the evening. It's a very cool lifestyle.

There's no kids on board. It's amazing. The people on here are in good spirits because there's no stress. People are just adults having fun.

They give us the freedom as performers to interact with the guests. They encourage us to go get drinks with them, to sit and chat with them, interact, and help them feel more immersed within the crew. 

I can easily save money because my living expenses are covered

We were making $3,000 a month on Celebrity. At the time, we thought that was great. But then we heard about Virgin. They were a new company and they were offering more money for musicians, so we were quick to jump ship.

As musicians, we're now making $4,000 a month.

Your rent, your board, your food onboard — it's all covered by the company. You save money so easily.

Being British and working for American cruise lines, we're paid in dollars and we're not taxed on those because we're not from the US and we're also living on a ship.

There's a thing called Seafarers' earning deduction . If you're from the UK and you're not living in the UK for more than half the year, then you don't need to pay income tax, as well. 

That's a really sweet part of being a full-time cruise ship musician, to save so much money. 

My favorite parts are traveling and meeting new people

I always get off the ship whenever we're in port, just for sanity. If you spend too much time on board, it kind of messes with your head.

We're one of the positions on board that is lucky enough to have so much downtime, so we can get off the ship usually whenever we want. 

Kangaroos in Australia; snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef; bungee jumping in New Zealand; sailing through the Norwegian fjords; taking quad bikes around Greece — it's been amazing to have the opportunity to travel to all these places and get paid for it, as well.

The downside is you only get a few hours to explore. You get to go to these amazing places, but you don't really get to immerse yourself in them.

But usually, these cruises are week-long and they repeat. So you can go back the next week to the same spots and find your local coffee spots, Wi-Fi spots, beaches, hangouts. 

And you learn so much when you're meeting people from all over the world, the different cultures they have, the experiences. I think that's my number one favorite thing. I've made friends for life.

But life at sea isn't always luxurious

Living in a small, windowless cabin can suck. It can be nice at times. It can feel cozy and you can nap at any time of the day because you haven't got daylight.

But if you miss daylight too much, it's not great.

Keeping up a long-distance relationship is extremely tough, too. I have a girlfriend and she's in LA. 

Luckily, the Wi-Fi on Virgin is free, so we get to FaceTime every night. But it does cut out at times, which is frustrating. The internet is often slow. 

My plan is to head over to California after this contract. I want to move on and keep my relationship healthy.  

There's no job quite like this one

If you're thinking about joining a ship and working as a performer, go for it , especially if you're young and you're single. It's a great time.
