Shania Twain at AO Arena Manchester – setlist, support act, tickets and more

The Queen of Me tour is on its way to Manchester.

Daisy Jackson

Shania Twain, the queen of country music, will visit Manchester next week on her huge tour.

It’s her first world tour in almost five years (though there was a lengthy Las Vegas residency in between).

Shania Twain is set to perform at the AO Arena in support of new album  Queen of Me  on 3 February 2023 – her sixth full-length album.

The 49-date tour will see her performing in London, Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester next year.

Shania, a five-time Grammy Award-winner, has become the best-selling female artist in country music history thanks to hits like That Don’t Impress Me Much, Man I Feel Like A Woman, and I’m Gonna Getcha Good.

Here’s everything you need to know.

It’s slim pickings for tickets for Shania Twain’s AO Arena gig.

At the time of writing, the gig isn’t completely sold out, but most of the tickets are single seats.

There’s better availability in a couple of blocks which are essentially behind the stage, and that means an obstructed view. So not ideal.

Tickets are priced at £83.50 each, with quite a few tickets also being sold through Ticketmaster’s resale service.

What are the stage times?

Exactly stage times for Shania Twain aren’t likely to be announced until the week of the event itself.

But we do know that doors to the AO Arena will open at 6pm, and the show will start at 7.30pm.

Based on stage times from previous shows, Breland will perform at 7.30pm.

Shania Twain is then likely to hit the stage at around 8.30pm.

We’ll be sure to update this article as soon as stage times for Manchester are announced.

Who’s supporting Shania Twain in Manchester?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Breland The Pen Point Guard ✍️ (@breland)

Country and hip-hop star Breland – who has long cited Shania Twain as an inspiration for his music – will be supporting her on her Manchester tour date.

He stunned audiences across the US supporting that leg of the Queen of Me tour, and will now be heading over to this side of the pond too.

Breland’s breakout single My Truck established him as a force on the current music landscape ahead of releasing debut album CROSS COUNTRY last year.

Setlist for Shania Twain’s Manchester concert

The below is Shania Twain’s setlist from The O2 in London earlier this month, which is likely to be simiiar (if not the same) as what we’ll get in Manchester.

Waking Up Dreaming Up! Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) I’m Gonna Getcha Good! Come on Over You’re Still the One Giddy Up! Any Man of Mine Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? Honey, I’m Home Inhale/Exhale Air (with Breland) Party for Two (with Breland) Nah! / She’s Not Just a Pretty Face / Waiter! Bring Me Water! / When / Thank You Baby! (for Makin’ Someday Come So Soon) Pretty Liar From This Moment On Come on Over (A capella snippet with fan) When (A capella snippet with fan) Number One Forever and for Always Rock This Country! Encore: That Don’t Impress Me Much Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

The AO Arena has a few strict policies to keep gig-goers safe, so make sure to check  entry requirements carefully before you travel.

For example, only one small bag per person is allowed, and bags like backpacks, travel cases and laptop bags are not permitted inside the arena.

All bags are scanned on entry to check for prohibited items like laser pens, flares, projectiles, weapons, drugs and alcohol, and even selfie sticks.

Liam Gallagher reveals son Gene’s band to open for him on Definitely Maybe anniversary tour

He revealed the news responding to a fan on social media – as you do!

Avatar photo

Liam Gallagher has said his son Gene and his band Villanelle will support him on his upcoming Definitely Maybe anniversary tour.

The indie-rocker took to X (formerly Twitter) to reply to a fan who said they like Gene’s band and asked what Liam thought of them.

In his response, Liam said he thinks the band are ‘good’ and announced they will be ‘first on’ for his Definitely Maybe tour.

shania twain tour manchester

Gene, 22, is Liam’s youngest son and is the frontman and guitarist for the recently formed band Villanelle.

The band is set to hit the UK festival scene this summer, releasing their new music along the way, and will also be first up to support LG alongside the likes of music legends including Cast and The View.

Although the newbies haven’t officially released any tracks just yet, they have recently been spotted supporting Brummie band the Overpass on tour, and performed at King Tut’s in Glasgow on March 21st.

shania twain tour manchester

Clips online hint that Gene will most likely take after his dad and go on to create some classic British indie-rock tunes.

Aside from the upcoming Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary tour, Liam has a big year and is currently touring with John Squire, formerly of the Stone Roses, to support their joint, self-titled album. The pair performed live at Manchester Apollo last month and reviews are looking pretty positive for these two rock legends.

Liam will be coming to Manchester’s brand-new Co-op Live arena on his Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary tour on June 15th and 16th, with a final Manchester date on June 27th.

It’s not clear which tour dates Gene will be supporting his dad on but we look forward to seeing him live.

shania twain tour manchester

Liam Gallagher claims he asked Noel to reunite for the Definitely Maybe 30th Anniversary tour later this year but that he ‘refused’.

The former Oasis frontman shared details of his upcoming tour – to celebrate 30 years of Oasis’ seminal 1994 album – back in October.

So, a solo Liam will play their iconic debut album in full, including tracks ‘Live Forever’, ‘Supersonic’, ‘Slide Away’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’.

The indie-rocker also teased he’ll be playing ‘naughty’ B-sides from the era.

He’ll be kicking off the 12-date tour in Sheffield on June 2nd, heading to Cardiff for a night, then onto London for four, followed by three dates in his native Manchester at the Co-op Live arena .

From there, Liam will play two dates in Glasgow and two in Dublin, before heading back to Manchester for the finale.

Speaking to MOJO recently, Liam said that his brother refused to put aside their differences and join him on the 30th anniversary tour. He said: “Noel? He ain’t f**king doing it.”

“I did call him! Well, my people called Noel’s management team,” he told the publication.

“We put an offer on the table for an Oasis thing – because we got offered it – and he said no. It was a big tour, a lot of money. He turned it down. I get it, he’s got a divorce going down. I’ll do the ‘Definitely Maybe’ thing and have a nice time without him.”

On whether next year could see the feuding pair finally make amends and reunite for t he anniversary of second album ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, Liam said: “It’s down to the universe. It’ll happen when it happens, it’s not in our hands anymore.”

Either way, it seems Liam is up for the tour with or without him as he added: “Me, I love nostalgia though. I’m doing the lot. Every album, even… what was the last one?”

But are you going to give us the surprise that Noel is going to join the DM tour or not, Liam? 🤨 — 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯 (Makarov's version) ♡ (@sadtanasx) October 17, 2023

It’s not the first time Liam has claimed his estranged brother has turned down his offer to get back together.

Back in October, a fan asked whether he’d give us the surprise of joining him on the DM tour, to which Liam responded: “He’s been asked and he’s refused.”

It comes after Noel told talkSport radio back in May that he was ‘open to a phone call’ from Liam but said that he wouldn’t dare and accused him of being a ‘coward’.

He continued: “He doesn’t have to speak to me. He won’t speak to me, he’s a coward. So he should get some of his people, his agent, to call my people and say, ‘Look, this is what we’re thinking.’ And then we’ll have a conversation about it. Until then, he’s being a little bit disingenuous.”

shania twain tour manchester

He added that Liam is guilty of getting ‘people’s hopes up’ with his post on social media.

But Liam hit back with a string of posts on social media saying it wasn’t true and that Noel just ‘hates Oasis fans’.

The band parted ways in 2009 and ever since, the bickering brothers have exchanged spats publicly while being asked about whether a reunion may be on the cards one day.

Regarding the 30th Anniversary of Definitely Maybe, Noel confirmed in April last year that an Oasis reunion would not be happening any time soon but did confirm plans of a reissue of the record to mark the occasion.

The singer-songwriter also added that there had ‘never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together’.

Earlier this year, as he reflected on their split, Liam accused Noel of throwing him ‘under the f**king bus’ at the time.

Liam is now focusing his attention on his much anticipated collaborative, self-titled album with Stone Roses guitarist John Squires, which is out on March 1st. The pair will also announce details of an upcoming tour.

Wigan Casino to celebrate 50th anniversary with Northern Soul all-nighter

The rarest Northern Soul record was recently sold for £100k

shania twain tour manchester

The legendary Wigan Casino will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special Northern Soul all-nighter after its last song, Frank Wilson’s ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), played in 1981 and it shut its doors for good.

The all-nighter will play on BBC Radio 6 Music, featuring all the – often B-side – bangers discovered in Motown vaults from the likes of The Supremes, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Dobie Gray, Yvonne Baker, and many more.

From its opening in 1973, Wigan Casino saw crowds of music lovers desperate to dance the night away to all of the latest vinyl records, getting dropped off by the coach load outside the venue – the former Empress Ballroom.

shania twain tour manchester

Several DJs including Russ Winstanley, Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts and Richard Searling would take turns in spinning the decks for clubbers who would queue for hours just to get a taste of the action in the main dance hall.

Wigan Casino’s very last all-nighter was played on December 6th 1981 from midnight to the early morning, played by DJ Russ Winstanley.

Now, 50 years after the legendary night began, a special edition of Northern Soul programming dedicated to Wigan Casino will kick off on Saturday September 9th until 8pm on Sunday September 10th, on BBC Radio 6 Music.

shania twain tour manchester

The tracks will be played across The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show alongside a broadcast of Stuart Maconie’s Northern Soul Prom, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in July.

Kicking off the programme on Saturday, from 6pm to 9pm, Craig’s show will feature a ten-piece soul house band – The Signatures – and special guests including Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling and R&B group The Flirtations.

Craig will also be going in search of the rarest Northern Soul record, which was recently sold for £100,000 – can you guess which one it was?

shania twain tour manchester

Then, from 9pm-12am, Craig will join Stuart to introduce a broadcast of the Northern Soul Prom – recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

It features Brendan Reilly, Darrell Smith, Frida Mariama Touray, Natalie Palmer, Nick Shirm and Vula Malinga as they perform the likes of You’re Gonna Make Me Love You, Open the Door to Your Heart and Hold Back The Night.

Stuart Maconie says: “Northern Soul was and is one of the most thrilling and vital music subcultures ever.

shania twain tour manchester

“It’s a dynamic, sympathetic union of the sounds and dreams of generations in the industrial heartlands of the North and Midlands of the UK and their counterparts in New York, Detroit, Philadelphia and beyond.

“At the heart of the scene is this wonderful, dramatic, vibrant and inspirational music, as well as the passion and knowledge of its devotees.

“They brought the communal rapture of the Northern Soul clubs and dancehalls to the Royal Albert Hall, which was on its feet on every tier for the Prom. It was a night the like of which that grand and esteemed old building has never seen before.”

shania twain tour manchester

From 12am-4am, 6 Music begins an audio tour of the UK’s iconic all-nighter venues, with hour-long playlists by DJs who were there at Golden Torch (12am-1am), Wigan Casino (1am-2am), Twisted Wheel (2am-3am) and 100 Club (3am-4am).

These key figures from the scene share stories and songs, taking listeners back to the dance floors of these legendary spaces.

From 4am-7am, 6 Music’s Morning After Mix, Northern Soul Special, brings listeners a playlist of mellow soul numbers, featuring classic ballads and as well as contemporary selections.

shania twain tour manchester

Stuart returns to the airwaves an hour earlier than usual at 7am on Sunday morning (September 10th) to present Lights On With Stuart Maconie.

He’ll bring the party to a close and bring listeners the original versions of Wigan Casino’s famous Three Before Eight – Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe and I’m On My Way by Dean Parrish.

The Wigan Casino 50th anniversary special on BBC Radio 6 Music can be listened to via BBC Sounds from 6pm on September 9th – 8pm on September 10th. You can also tune in via DAB Digital Radio, Freeview, Sky TV, and supported mobile devices.

Shania Twain looked sensational as she took to the stage at the AO Arena in Manchester on Monday night  during the European leg of her Queen of Me Tour.

The Canadian country icon, 58, made sure all eyes were on her as she performed in a very daring pink dazzling mini dress.

Her garment, which she wore with the collar up, boasted dramatic shoulder pads with mesh detailing cascading down to the floor.

Showcasing her amazing dance moves, Shania performedin a pair of pink glittering knee high boots and styled her long brunette tresses in luxurious waves.

She completed her outfit with a chunky jewelled pink necklace and a pair of coordinated drop earrings.

The star went all out to deliver the age-defying glamorous look as she performed her hits to fans.

Earlier this year, after wearing one dress with a thigh split that left little to the imagination, Shania said: 'Life's too short to wear boring clothes!'

She added in an impassioned Instagram post that fashion is a 'powerful tool' helping her to 'convey my personality and express my creativity'.

'Other than getting to hang out with my friends for the night, it's one of my favourite things about attending award shows!' she concluded.

The Man! I Feel Like a Woman singer said 'fashion is a playground and I have a lot of fun with it.'

'Style and fashion are part of the country music experience for both artists and fans,' Shania told In Style recently.

'For me, the creativity doesn't stop at the music. Fashion is an extension of the whole story,' she added.

And she didn't let the trolls bring her down, telling the outlet that she felt fantastic.

Shania recently spoke about  feeling comfortable in her own body as she embraces ageing naturally.

But it hasn't been easy, as she recalled having to battle with self-confidence issues over the years.

Shania admitted to there being times that she opted to keep the lights off in her bedroom as she didn't like her reflection.

The singer told The Mirror : 'I say you should look in the mirror and be fine with that. I am only going to get older and saggier — if I hate myself now then what state am I going to be in in five or 10 years?'

See Shania Twain Recover From Her Own 'Errors Tour' Moment

Shania Twain  isn't immune to onstage mishaps, but she's definitely a pro at handling them with grace and precision.

The 58-year-old Grammy winner proved she's certainly not lip-syncing on tour in a candid clip that's since gone viral on TikTok.

In the video, Twain is busy singing along and dancing to her hit song "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" which was released in 1995 as the fourth single from her second studio album,  The Woman in Me .

As the moment plays out, text on the screen prepares fans by asking viewers to "wait for it..." before three laugh-crying emojis appear in its place.

With a mic in one hand and a prop in the other, the country-pop sensation slipped up, confusing the weight of what she held in each hand, and began singing into her pink and white prop not once but twice.

The mistake, which, honestly, anyone could have made, was enough to make the superstar chuckle, as seen in the clip.

"I’m really glad somebody captured this moment, it’s made me laugh all over again 😂 #ontour," she quipped in the caption before giving credit to the presumed videographer, writing, "🤳  @Ben Zane ."

TikTokers were just as entertained by the blunder as Twain, taking to the comments to praise the singer for her authenticity and how she handled the oversight.

"at least you know she isn't lip syncing," one fan wrote. "love her!"

"When we realize our idols are just like us, it makes them even better ❤️❤️," another added.

"I love how you just continue singing into it. 🤣," a third pointed out.

A different user exclaimed, "Congrats @Shania Twain for keeping it REAL!!"

This may be one for the Canadian singer-songwriter's books but it doesn't compare to the many gaffes  made by Taylor Swift  during her international Eras Tour , which has since been dubbed the "Errors Tour" by Swifties.

Shania Twain laughs off blunder on stage as fans react — here's what she had to say

The "that don't impress me much" singer couldn't help but laugh.

Ahad Sanwari

Over three decades into her career, Shania Twain has established a reputation for herself as not only one of the most influential country-pop artists, but also one of the most professional.

The 58-year-old Canadian musician is currently residing in Las Vegas while commandeering her latest residency Shania Twain: Come On Over — The Las Vegas Residency — All The Hits! , and it's already gotten off to an eventful start.

Kicking off last month, the latest run of shows is slated to continue till December, and it's not just eye-catching fashion Shania's been serving , but also candid moments.

One of the star's on-stage moments during a recent show caught the eye of fans, and a clip of the incident has quickly gone viral and made the rounds on the internet.

While performing her 1995 song "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!" Shania also joined her background drummers for a drum solo, and performed half the song with a drumstick in her hand.

However, at one point, just before the chorus, she ended up confusing the drumstick for her microphone, and tried singing through it. As she realized her blunder, she quickly tried to pull off a switcheroo and correct herself.

Of course, as charismatic as always, Shania was left in hysterics by the incident on stage, bending over in laughter and shouting out: "Oh my god! That was hilarious!"

The singer took it in good spirits, singing out of her drumstick a couple more times for comedic effect while seamlessly carrying on the show and continuing to giggle throughout. A fan captured the moment on video and shared it on social media, and it quickly began sparking up a frenzy.

Fans found Shania's reaction to the gaff extremely charming, while many also took it, at the very least, as an indicator that she was in fact singing completely live, and composed herself rapidly enough to keep going.

A week after the video was first shared, the "You're Still the One" singer posted the clip on social media herself and reacted to the blunder, writing: "I'm really glad somebody captured this moment, it's made me laugh all over again."

Shania twain looks back on incredible career as she launches vegas residency.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- From classic music videos to record album sales, sold-out concert tours and countless awards, Shania Twain is every bit a music icon.

A special new episode of On The Red Carpet is celebrating Shania's incredible career featuring an intimate interview with the five-time Grammy winner inside the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas where she's performing her classic hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," "From This Moment On" and "That Don't Impress Me Much" at her residency titled, "Come on Over."

Shania sat down with George Pennacchio to talk about her music and her remarkable life story, including a difficult childhood living in extreme poverty in Canada.

"When I was a child, I always dreamt that the days or the weeks that we didn't have any food, or we didn't have any heat in the middle of winter that somebody would come and save us," she said.

Shania told George about her iconic fashion, which of her famous music videos was her favorite and what she thinks about current top-selling artists like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

She also told a wild story about an incident during her early days in Nashville involving someone pulling a gun in the parking lot outside a honky-tonk bar where she was perfoming.

"It was a new experience for me," Twain said. "In my bars where I grew up singing, they fight all right. But they fist fight."

Glastonbury announces full line-up and set times for 2024 festival

The iconic music festival returns to Worthy Farm this month

  • 11:11, 4 Jun 2024

Glastonbury Festival has finally confirmed its full line-up and set times for this year's festival.

The iconic music event takes place later on this month, between June 26 and June 30. Some 200,000 attendees will descend on Worthy Farm in Somerset to see some of the world's best artists.

It was revealed back in March that Glastonbury veterans Coldplay, and first-timers Dua Lipa and American singer Sza, will all headline the Pyramid Stage at this year's festival, with country singer Shania Twain taking the Sunday afternoon legends slot.

Sought-after Glastonbury tickets initially went on sale in November and were snapped up in a matter of minutes. Those who missed out had another chance to secure tickets during a general resale in April.

Bring Me the Horizon

Rock music and streaming have rarely been a successful combination – but the surprise release of British metal stars Bring Me the Horizon ’s new album, “Post Human: Nex Gen”, is bucking that trend.

Related Stories

The ad market is not ready for the imminent streaming sports boom, nintendo switch oled is marked down to the cheapest price we’ve ever seen, popular on variety.

Jennings, who co-manages the band with Raw Power’s U.S. head Matt Ash, admits the band’s request to rush-release the album straight after its completion gave “everybody on my team and the key people at RCA/Sony a complete heart attack,” he laughs, but adds the campaign came together very quickly.

“In a parallel world, [frontman] Oli Sykes would have probably just put it out on his Instagram account,” Jennings says. “While record companies always want as much time as possible to set records up. We came to a compromise and said, ‘Give us three to four weeks.’

“And fair play to Sony, everyone’s come together really well,” he continues. “This is very much a worldwide act and the numbers everywhere – in America, Germany, Japan and Australia – are all outdoing the last album.”

The physical release will follow on September 27. The album was completed after the departure of keyboard player and producer Jordan Fish, who was widely credited with assisting the band’s move into more accessible musical territory.

Jennings predicts a shorter wait for the next BMTH album while, unusually, the band completed much of its touring – including sold-out arena runs in the U.K. and Australia – before the album came out. Jennings says they were happy to “rewrite the rulebook” as there is such huge demand to see the band live. BMTH plays its debut stadium headline show in Sao Paolo, Brazil in November and, with over 35,000 tickets already sold for that date, Jennings is hoping it will be the first of many.

“We don’t have any ceiling on where we think we can take the band – and the guys feel that way as well,” he says. “We’ve got a perfect storm: a fanbase that have stuck with the band through thick and thin, and a lot of young people coming up who hear the music on the internet. There’s still plenty of growth to go and we’ve got plans for the next few years that will prove that.”

Meanwhile, Raw Power has had some changes of its own, after ATC Management – home to the likes of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey – bought a controlling interest in the company. The Raw Power team will now move into ATC’s HQ in Camden, North London. Jennings remains as Raw Power CEO and praises ATC bosses Brian Message, Adam Driscoll and Ric Salmon as “really good people.”

“Going in with somebody more alternative felt like a good direction for us to go in,” says Jennings. “The idea is that it creates more opportunities for all our artists – hopefully, it’s going to be a classic case of one plus one equals three.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also enjoying huge touring success – albeit in a very different genre – are veteran U.K. boy band Take That.

The group has sold over 700,000 tickets for its current run of 41 dates at a variety of arenas and stadiums – the biggest-selling tour by a U.K. artist this year.

“It’s a real testament to their drive and ambition,” Take That manager Chris Dempsey, managing director of YMU Music, tells Variety. “They’ve got a great catalog of hits and an incredibly dedicated fanbase, but they constantly stride forward. They’re actually playing seven or eight songs from the new album on this tour and that speaks to their forward-thinking nature.”

The band has also broken records on this tour for the number of career shows played at London’s O2 Arena and Manchester’s AO Arena – although it was not originally scheduled to play the latter. Take That were forced to move five shows from the new Co-op Live venue after it failed to open on schedule following a series of technical problems, as documented in last month’s Brit Beat.

“It was a very stressful few days,” admits Dempsey. “It was all hands to the pump in terms of moving to the AO Arena, and big thanks to them for stepping in. We’ve got a long history and relationship with them – and in some ways it was nice to get back in there and break that record.”

“Any new venue opening, particularly at that scale, is always going to encounter challenges and problems,” he says. “I’m sure they’d be the first people to look at it and say they’d do some things differently. But these things happen.

“It was crazy that [Take That moving shows] was headline news,” he adds. “Those BBC news alerts are usually reserved for the death of a monarch! Sometimes you have to have a bit of perspective and say, ‘It’s a band switching venues in the same week in the same city and everyone’s still going to see the show.’”

Take That have traditionally concentrated their touring in the U.K. and Ireland, but this tour sees them also take on multiple dates across Europe, including their own “The Greatest Weekend” festival in Malta in October.

Dates in Australia and Asia (where the band’s 2006 single “Patience” has been enjoying a viral moment on social media) are scheduled, while Dempsey hopes they will also make a long-awaited return to playing live in America. The band had a solitary Top 10 U.S. hit, “Back for Good”, in the ‘90s, although latest album, “This Life”, has a notably more American sound.

“We’ve looked at it and we want to do it,” Dempsey says. “We’ve got offers and options, but the timing is really important. There’s keen interest from promoters in Vegas [for a residency]. The band would love to do something like that. If you think about their show and how it could potentially work on those stages, it’s a no-brainer.”

Meanwhile, YMU is also under new ownership, having been acquired by Permira Credit earlier this year, although Dempsey says it remains very much business-as-usual.

“I’m just focused on building a really strong and interesting music division,” he says. “The ownership side of it doesn’t really affect me too much; obviously there were some rumblings in the press last year, which was challenging, but I just keep focused on what I can affect. We’re in a good space at the moment and we’re having a great year.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Country music also continues to be a surprisingly hot ticket in the U.K. this summer – with Morgan Wallen and Shania Twain both due to headline American Express Presents BST Hyde Park festival in London this summer.

But one man who definitely isn’t taken aback by the genre’s crossover is Bob Harris. The veteran broadcaster and Country to Country Festival (C2C) host recently celebrated 25 years as presenter of “The Country Show” on BBC Radio 2 with a special program featuring glowing tributes from the likes of Keith Urban, Tim McGraw and Lady A.

“It took a while,” Harris says with a grin. “Lots of pennies had to drop into their slots, but gradually they did and now we’re sitting on the fastest growing music genre in Britain. That’s amazing.

“Record companies want to see a genre that’s pumping out records, getting into the charts and making some money – and we’ve reached that point,” he adds. “Everybody’s talking about country music. Now, Beyoncé has taken it over that line and I can’t see how it can do anything other than get bigger and bigger.”

Harris’ show has proved a key influence on the growth of country this side of the Atlantic, being the first to play the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and Luke Combs, although – in typical self-deprecating fashion – he tells Variety he was simply in the right place at the right time.

“I was really fortunate,” he says. “Before I first went out there, a lot of the big country music stars of the day didn’t see the virtue in taking their music to the U.K. It was inconvenient, expensive and there wasn’t a huge market.

“But that insularity was beginning to crack,” he adds. “My program played a role in pushing the door ajar to create a platform so that the Brad Paisleys and Keith Urbans of this world could come over and find an audience when they got here.”

Harris also praises Milly Olykan, former co-promoter of C2C (which launched in 2013) and now VP of international relations & development at the Country Music Association, for her “huge role” in growing the genre’s U.K. presence.

“We both just want to do the best for the music,” he says. “I’ve watched C2C grow from a quiet start. The older protectionists began to disappear, a younger, much more energy-driven audience began to take their place and I realized the baton was being handed over to a new generation: younger people who’d found country and loved the fact that it was real music.”

C2C has since expanded to a multi-day, multi-site event, and provided a launchpad for Britain to become a year-round destination for touring country artists. But Harris would still like to see further commitment from the genre’s powerbase.

“I would say to Nashville, take a chance on the UK,” he says. “The community is established here now, and it loves the music. One of the things that characterize the reaction from the American artists who come here is, how very clear it is that the UK fans go deep into the music.

“That’s really worth emphasizing to Nashville; the love for the music exists here in a very deep way to encourage Music City to point as many artists in our direction as they can.”

And, when they come, Harris hopes to be here to welcome them to his show for a long time yet. In a remarkable career, he has been broadcasting on the BBC for over 50 years, but says he has no plans to retire any time soon.

“I’ll be very willing to carry on for as long as Radio 2 still want me and so long as the programs still sound good,” he adds. “I wouldn’t like to outstay my welcome but, if I can, I’ll be doing C2C next year and carrying on with the program. So, all I can say about that is, long may it continue!”
