Rockhampton Tours

Rockhampton Day Tours

Australia’s ‘Beef Capital’ is located in the central Capricorn Region and boasts an abundance of rich heritage and natural wonders. Located around 40km inland from the Capricorn coastline and 640km north of Brisbane, Rockhampton offers both culture and natural beauty.

This bustling town sits upon the Fitzroy River and is surrounded by national parks and historic sites all nestled upon the doorstep of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Dating back to the 1850s, Rockhampton was once one of Queensland’s major inland cities. The township was built on a rich cattle, coal and gold rush history with many heritage buildings and sites just waiting to be discovered. Take a walk down the historic Quay Street and East Street precincts and discover the abundance of heritage listed buildings including the Customs House, the Town Hall, Railway Workshops and stunning cathedrals.

Rockhampton offers a range of accommodation for all types of travellers ranging from backpacker hostels to hotels.

Top things to do:

  • Rockhampton Reef Tours with Keppel Explorer .
  • Rockhampton Heritage Village is the local township museum and is well worth a visit, having you step back in time and discover the cultural significance of the region.
  • The ancient Aboriginal tribal sites and bushland at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre should also be on your bucket list.
  • Just a short drive from the town centre will have you arrive at Mount Morgan, a township that once boasted a rich gold mining community.
  • There are many historic pubs around town and we highly recommend indulging in one of Queensland’s best cuts of Steak.
  • For an authentic Outback Queensland experience, be sure to attend the weekly Rodeo held at the Great Western Hotel. We also highly recommend a visit to the Gracemere Saleyards, the largest stud selling venue in the southern hemisphere.
  • Surrounding Rockhampton you will find an array of natural wonders including Mount Archer National Park. Enjoy the walking trails that will lead you through the region’s native wildflowers and plants or take a walk to the top of the park for some spectacular photo opportunities and views of Rockhampton and the surrounding coastline.
  • Around 20km from Rockhampton, you will stumble upon the stunning Capricorn Caves. These caves are situated above the ground and boast fascinating limestone formations.
  • The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are also well worth a visit. The gardens are over 130 years old and were recently deemed a heritage site. It is a great place to pack a picnic and relax for the day or take a stroll through Rockhampton Zoo.

Every tour will be different so drop your expectations and relax, trust that Scotty will use his local knowledge to provide you with the most amazing Keppel experience based on the conditions on the day. Be fluid as you arc across the bay and around the coral reef, sliding into coves of seclusion and hidden treasures as you circumnavigate the island.

Miall & Middle Islands

Play in the waves at Red Beach (only accessible by boat) and zip in and out of coves lined with secret beaches and caves. Health & Fitness requirements?

Yep, this is a big day so make sure you’re able to go the distance!!! You’ll be on and off, up and down, in and out all day so a moderate level of fitness is required. There’s a lot to explore so make sure you can keep up!

Am I too old, too young, too big or too little?

This is an adventure tour on a fast, highly manoeuvrable, open air boat with multiple snorkelling and beach stops sliding on and off into the water. It’s therefore not appropriate for young ones under 5, or people that cannot get back on board from the water via our small ladder. Our jockey seats are quite small so may not fit or be comfortable for larger folk and our golden oldies can still participate so long as they’re prepared for a big day out on the water.

Are dietary requirements covered?

Absolutely! Our lunches are made with love from the award winning Waterline restaurant at the Marina who are able to cater to any and all dietary requirements. There will be a section within the booking process where you can enter these details for each guest.

Can I change the travel date?

100% no questions asked and no change fee to change your booking up to 48hrs prior to departure. Changes requested within 48hrs are only possible if we can resell your seats prior to departure, else the date change will incur a 50% charge.

Can I get the refund?

No problemo, cancel anytime for whatever reason up until 48hrs prior to departure and receive a no questions asked refund in full. Cancellations within 48hrs are only refundable if we can resell your seats prior to departure.

We had the most amazing day out with Scotty. His knowledge and passion had us enchanted the whole day. We were first timers for boating and snorkeling and Scotty’s ability to reassure and guide enabled us to take in, the most gorgeous part of the world we have ever seen. We shared lots of laughs and a beautiful lunch. We highly recommend this experience and will treasure our memories of the day forever 🤗

I thoroughly enjoyed the “Keppel Explorer” with Scotty. A bespoken boat tour (no more than 12 people). Scotty reads the weather to give you the best Keppel experience possible. Truely amazing. We went to locations that the big boats can’t get to…so well worth it for me, staying another night in the area to go on this tour. Highly recommended.

Molenaar Family

I thoroughly enjoyed the “Keppel Explorer” with Scotty. A bespoken boat tour (no more than 12 people). My husband and I along with our 3 children (ages 4, 6, 8) had an epic day on the Keppel Explorer! Scotty was patient, encouraging and accomodating from the very start to the end. The boat looked fabulous as has recently undergone a revamp! The wetsuits and snorkel gear was all really clean, well looked after and easy to wear.

It is such a positive of this tour that it is only a small group on a smaller boat; we saw so much, learnt lots and could spontaneously stop to snorkel with a manta ray!! Our kids are stoked, memories made for sure.

We are so happy we chose this tour, absolutely no other way to explore the islands. Thanks Scotty, legend!

Absolutely AMAZING experience 10/10!!

Snorkelling with sea turtles & mantaray’s, the incredible fish & coral reef. Not to mention the stunning beaches.

Loved our healthy packed lunch & being in a small group. Scotty our host was friendly, passionate & informative.

Can’t wait to do it again.

Awesome trip on Keppel Explorer. We were lucky and had the perfect weather. Water temp 27 and flat with no waves. Scotty (our captain/guide) took us to a couple of islands and knew where the world class diving spots were. We dived some of the best reef I have ever seen.

A nice lunch was provided and Scotty was extremely knowledgeable and ready to answer questioned asked. I have been to Keppel a few times and thought I would try something different by booking Keppel Explorer, I am glad I did and will book again in future

Keppel Bay Islands

Tours, day trips, snorkeling, cruises

Keppel Bay is a broad sweep of water off the central Queensland coast from Curtis Island to Corio Bay. The picturesque Capricorn Coast, with its townships of Yeppoon, Emu Park and Keppel Sands, fronts the bay.

Access to the islands is by boat only. Boat launch facilities and charters are available from Rosslyn Bay Harbour with secure parking available nearby. It is also possible to arrange transport to the national park islands from Great Keppel Island.

Keppel Bay is studded with islands. The two largest islands, Great Keppel (1454ha) and North Keppel (627ha), are surrounded by 16 smaller islands and several prominent rocky outcrops. Keppel Bay Islands National Park includes 13 islands, although it does not include Great Keppel Island. Barren and Peak islands form the Keppel Bay Islands National Park (Scientific). Steep hills and cliffs, which plunge into the sea, are features of the islands but there are also sheltered bays and quiet sandy beaches. Vegetation ranges from open grassland and heathland to tall, shady forests and dense, low rainforests.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park surrounds the Keppel Bay islands. Together they form part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the world’s largest reef and island system. It is of exceptional beauty and biological diversity, protecting many endangered animals and plants.

Day trips to the Keppel Bay Islands operate from the Keppel Bay Marina at Rosslyn Harbour. The Keppel Explorer Tours offer a comprehensive cruise to many of the islands and includes history and marine education, snorkeling and lunch.

...or should we head to Cairns. I posted on the Townsville site bc we'd planned on just heading up that far, but it seems there are not many dive/snorkel tours to hop onto from there and most of the companies seem to be out of Cairns. True?

' class=

Rockhampton and Bundaberg are both great places to access the southern end of the reef and also provide tranfer points for Lady Elliot, Lady Musgrave and the Keppel Islands.

You could try Capricorn Reef http://www.capricornreefdiving.com/ out of Rockhampton

or Lady Musgrave trips out of 1770

see; http://www.lmcruises.com.au/

There are reef tours available all the way up the Queensland coast it's just that Cairns has the marketing deal (particularly for the OS market) absolutely down pat! You can also take tours from Airlie Beach and Mackay. Definitely no need to go as far as Cairns.

That is so helpful! Thanks!

Hello and Welcome,

As someone who works in Rockhampton and lives on the coast nearby in Yeppoon, I personally would recommend that you would be better off planning a diving trip in the Whitsundays Islands area. The towns of Airlie Beach and nearby Shute Harbour are ideally set up for any water and tourist pursuits, much more so than Rockhampton which is at least 35km's from the coast.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your holiday.

A) drive up as far as Cairns, but people have told me I'm crazy to do that as it is too far.

B) fly to Cairns from Brisbane after driving to Fraser Island and back to Brisbane.

C) Drive up to Townsville, but I could not find any good scuba/snorkelling tours/companies. Just Adrenaline Divers in which I have no confidence.

I just seem to be getting more confused. Every time I think I have the answer, I get more options to consider and start all over.

there are some very good dive sites on the southern end of the reef and some spectacular snorkelling to be had out of Bundaberg or Gladstone with Lady Elliot,Wilson and Lady Musgrave Islands.

In saying that these places are fairly remote, hardly developed and very light on tourists. If thats your thing then go :-)

Most tourists however, base themselves in either the Whitsunday Islands/Airlie Beach or Cairns/Port Douglas - there are a lot of options from these very tourist oriented towns and not just diving.

rockhampton reef tours

Short answer - No.

Head to Cairns and preferably Port Douglas (1 hr away) where the outer reef is closest.

See link below for reef trip tips.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g255070-i737-k144183-Cairns_Port_Douglas_GBR_Experiences-Port_Douglas_Queensland.html

Hello again,

Both Qantas and Virgin Blue service Prosperine. You can compare flights using Webjet at:

http://tsa.webjet.com.au/webjettsa/home.aspx?EntryPoint=Flight

I know what you mean about being confused - sometimes there are too many options. We experienced this when planning an up-coming holiday to Greece, but once we finally decided where we wanted to go we were able to make our bookings without any second thoughts.

Happy planning,

Located about 10kms to the east of Airlie Beach in Queensland, Shute Harbour remains one of the busiest tourism sea-ports in Australia. It stands as an important gateway into the Whitsunday Islands, which includes some of the Great Barrier Reef’s most secluded and pristine coral-fringed islands.

Key Takeaways:

What is there to do at Shute Harbour?

There are many things to do at Shute Harbour, including chartering a boat to go diving or snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef , fishing, and exploring the Conway National Park.

The beauty of the reef may be Shute Harbour’s most alluring feature. Nevertheless, surrounding this site is the Conway National Park, which boasts a plethora of beautiful walking tracks that range from easy to somewhat challenging. Swim in the Cedar Creek Falls while you’re in the national park.

Outdoor enthusiasts will adore this reserve, as it boasts an extensive tropical rainforest, despite its location halfway up the Queensland coast. Hop on a Segway Tour and explore Conway National Park the easy way.

Speed boats, catamarans and a range of other sea-vessels are available, so tourists have plenty of choices when wanting to explore the Whitsundays.

Airlie Beach Speed Boats

You can also take a scenic flight over the Whitsunday Coast and see the islands from above.

Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach are close to the Whitsunday Airport, where scenic flights are available. There is no better way to take in the awe-inspiring scenery of the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach than a seaplane or helicopter. From the air, a kaleidoscope of blues, greens and golds put on a magical show for tourists.

Helicopter over Whitehaven Beach

Whether you’re looking for an action-packed holiday or a relaxing getaway, Shute Harbour has something for everyone.

Can I swim at Shute Harbour?

Yes, you can swim at Shute Harbour. However, we recommend swimming at the nearby beaches and the Airlie Beach lagoon as the water is cleaner and there are more amenities.

See some of the highlights of Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and the Whitsunday Islands in the video below (video duration: around 5 minutes) .

There is a pontoon where locals and visitors can fish directly from the mainland in Shute Harbour. The Whitsunday Passage and beyond is a popular place for fishing tours.

Trout, Travelly, squid and Barramundi are all waiting within the Whitsunday Passage and beyond, making Shute Harbour a popular place for fishing tours. Avid fishermen travel here from all over the world to experience the challenging reef and deep-water fishing possibilities.

Are there crocodiles in Shute Harbour?

Crocodile sightings are few and far between and the waters around Shute Harbour are not known to be inhabited by crocodiles. However, as with any body of water in Queensland, it’s a good idea to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings.

You can see crocodiles near Shute Harbour, by visiting the Whitsunday Crocodile Safari . Here you can see crocodiles up close in their natural habitat. The tour (pictured below) is led by an experienced guide, and they’ll provide you with safety tips so you can enjoy your experience.

The weather in Shute Harbour is warm and humid, with an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. The wet season is from November to April, and the dry season is from May to October.

The best time of year to visit Shute Harbour is in Australia’s spring – from September to November when the weather is a little cooler.

If you are planning on going diving or snorkeling around the Whitsundays, you will need to bring your own equipment unless going on one of the many guided tours. Otherwise, the Queensland sun is strong, so just make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.

How do I get to Shute Harbour?

The closest airport to Shute Harbour is Whitsunday Coast Airport, which is located just a few minutes away by car. The easiest way to get to Shute Harbour from Sydney and Brisbane is to fly directly to the Whitsunday Coast Airport, and then take a short transfer bus to Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach.

Driving 1,100 kilometres to Shute Harbour from Brisbane takes approximately 13 hours to complete, and it is recommended that you break this journey up over a couple of days.

Do I need a car to get around Shute Harbour?

No, you do not need a car to get around Shute Harbour. There is a public bus that runs from the ferry terminal to the main tourist areas of Airlie Beach. You can also walk or ride a bike.

Airlie beach is just a short 10 minute drive from Shute Harbour.

What is the history of Shute Harbour?

Shute Harbour was named after Captain Henry Daniel Shute, who was the first European to settle in the area. He established a sheep farm on Hamilton Island in 1879 and built a wharf at Shute Harbour to ship wool back to the mainland. The wharf was later used to ship sugar cane from the nearby farms.

In World War II,Shute Harbour was used as a base for the United States Navy. During this time, a causeway was built to connect Hamilton Island to the mainland.

Shute Harbour was once the busiest port in Queensland and was an important gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. However, over time, the nearby airports have taken over as the primary means of transportation to the reef.

Now, there are a range of ferry services, resort connections, tours and experiences available at Shute Harbour Marine Terminal.

Queensland 'sinkhole' afflicts barge landing popular with 4WD enthusiasts, campers heading to K'gari

A "near-shore landslide", often known as a sinkhole, is consuming the end of Inskip Point, sinking part of a popular barge landing.

The Department of Environment confirmed the landslide had created a "large, deep hole" at the western end of the barge landing, north of Rainbow Beach.

In a statement, a DES spokesman said anyone driving near the area should exercise caution before deciding whether to approach.

"K'gari barge access has not been affected, however a large section of the barge landing has sunk," he said.

"All camping areas and beach driving areas at Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area remains open."

Inskip Point is known for these types of landslips. They are caused when a large body of sand moves quickly, forming an underwater cliff that shifts towards the shore as the sand heads seaward.

They are not uncommon along Inskip, with one opening up along the shoreline in late April.

In September 2015, a landslip that was larger than a football field opened up overnight, swallowing a car, caravan, camper trailer and tents.

DES is advising people to stay away from the water's edge, to avoid swimming near the landslip and to ensure children are well supervised.
