We brake for cookies: Here’s the scoop on New Hampshire’s famous inn-to-inn treat tour

These treats were baked for the Inn to Inn Cookie and Candy Tour by the folks at the Inn at Ellis River in Jackson, N.H.

Step into a lavishly decorated country inn, inhale the aroma of warm-from-the oven cookies mingled with the scent of a woodburning fire, and — unless your name ends in Scrooge or Grinch — you’ll reach peak Holiday Spirit Mode. That’s what they’re aiming for in New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Valley, home to New England’s longest-running cookie tour. The 24th annual Inn to Inn Cookie and Candy Tour is slated for Dec. 11-12, after pausing for COVID in 2020. No worries about piling into a van with strangers; this is a self-driving event.

Add a stay at one of the nine participating inns and you’ve got yourself a sweet respite from the holiday chaos, along with a keepsake cookbook, a custom-made ornament, decorating ideas, and a major sugar rush, if you eat every treat (they’re packaged individually this year, so they’re easy to save and share). A portion of the proceeds from the tour will be donated to End 68 Hours of Hunger , a program designed to feed children on weekends when they are not provided with school meals.

“We get a good mix of families with kids and younger couples, who are nostalgic for the country inn, going-to-Grandma’s-house experience,” says Kevin Flynn, innkeeper of the Snowvillage Inn in Eaton (with Jen Kovach), and a participant in the cookie tour since its inception. Not only is it a great excuse to eat cookies all weekend, but guests can tour the inns in the valley, he notes. “Just a warning: We over-decorate more than normal human beings!”

As veterans of this event — strictly for fun and cookies, not work — we can tell you it’s delightful. The inns go all out with holiday finery, and the treats are delicious. The take-home recipes are a bonus: We’re still making the fabulously decadent chocolate-peanut-butter balls we sampled at the Eastman Inn several years ago. Each inn bakes between 1,000 and 1,200 cookies each year for this event, we’re told. Over the years, that’s about 315,000 cookies served. The tour began as a pot-luck lunch and evolved into the inn-to-inn cookie tour of today. Candy was added because who doesn’t like fudge?

If you’re not a Christmas person but love a tasty baked good, note that treats aren’t all holiday-focused — you won’t overload on sugar cookie Santas. This year’s lineup will include Kentucky Derby Pie Cookies from the Cranmore Inn and Boozy Fudge (spiked with maple vodka) at the Samuel O’Reilly House , both in North Conway.

In addition to cookie- and candy-tasting, some inns will host local crafters who’ll be selling artworks, holiday decorations, and home goods, so guests can get some shopping done (and support small businesses). North Conway itself is a major shopping zone, with outlet stores and a fine craft gallery run by the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. And if you’ve got a cookie swap to go to, hel-lo ! Nobody minds if you pass off these original recipes as your own creation.

No inn is more than 15 minutes from the next one; many are much closer. In addition to the Snowvillage Inn, Cranmore Inn, and Samuel O’Reilly House, the participating inns include the Inn at Crystal Lake and Pub in Eaton; Wildcat Inn & Tavern and Inn at Ellis River , both in Jackson; the Eastman Inn in North Conway; The Farmstand B&B in Chocorua; and the Admiral Peary Inn B&B in Fryeburg, Maine. The most efficient strategy is to start or finish your tour in Fryeburg or Chocorua.

Due to COVID, the nine participating inns will tweak the proceedings a bit. Although tour-goers are typically spread out between the inns as they come and go, a limited number of guests will be allowed to gather at each property at one time to avoid crowding this year. Additionally, cookies and candy will be wrapped, bagged, or individually served to assure safe handling. Tour-goers may be asked to wear masks at the inns. Tour organizers are keeping tabs on state guidelines for gatherings, distancing, and food service, and will implement precautions accordingly.

Go up for a day of treat-gobbling and holiday cheer, or make it a weekend. Tickets for the tour (good for both Dec. 11 and Dec. 12) are $35, and may be purchased at cookietour.square.site until Dec. 5, or when all tickets are sold. Tickets must be reserved in advance; there are no ticket sales on the day of the event (it’s usually sold out long before that). Inns will be open for goodie-mongers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day of the tour.

Since the tour is sponsored by the Country Inns in the White Mountains , they’re naturally hoping you’ll come up north for a sleepover at one of the participating inns. Plus, reserving a lodging package is the best way to secure tickets for the cookie tour. Each participating inn offers a Cookie Tour Package with a one- or two-night stay. Packages include accommodations, breakfast each morning, two tour tickets and a map, a cookbook, and a custom-made ornament commemorating the tour. Each inn’s package varies according to inclusions and price. Some inns have added dinner and other elements to their packages. There will also be a drawing for a $250 gift certificate for stays at the Country Inns in the White Mountains. Prices for two-night packages for two range from $328 at the Admiral Peary Inn to $529 at the Cranmore Inn. One-night packages at those inns are $197 and $349 respectively. The Snowvillage Inn also offers a one-night stay package ($229 per couple; $429 for two nights). For details, visit countryinnsinthewhitemountains.com/reserve-your-cookie-tour-package-now .

Things To Do

Travel | inn to inn cookie and candy tour makes holiday bright.

Delectable treats await at the the Inn to Inn Cookie and Candy Tour in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. (Courtesy photo)

All this is yours when you head up to Mount Washington Valley the weekend of Dec. 11-12 and take in the Inn to Inn Cookie and Candy Tour. In its 25th season, the weekend event opens the doors of eight unique inns, all part of the region’s Country Inns In The White Mountains group.

The event tickets go first to those who book overnight rooms at one of the participating Inns.Tickets for the general public go on sale Nov. 22, . At $35 each, tickets give you access to eight inns, cookies and candies served at each, tours that include decorating tips, a recipe book, a keepsake ornament (for those who stay at one of the inns), a chance to win a $250 gift card for a future inn stay, and a few more surprises.

Does it get more holiday-perfect than that?

Inns participating  include the Inn at Crystal Lake and Pub in Eaton, the Inn at Ellis River and Wildcat Inn in Jackson, the Cranmore Inn and Samuel O’Reilly House in North Conway Village, the Snowvillage Inn in Snowville, The Farmstand in Chocorua, and Admiral Peary Inn Bed & Breakfast in nearby Fryeburg, Maine.

The route runs from Eaton to Jackson (or vice versa), with no inn more than 15 minutes distance from the next. You’ll drive through the Valley, too, where holiday shopping options are nearly endless.

Mary Kendzierski owns and operates the Inn at Ellis River, a lovely spot just past the famed covered bridge in Jackson tucked along the banks of that river.

The Cookie Tour, which she’s participated in since buying the inn eight years ago, is a winter season highlight, she said.

They go all in – as all the innkeepers do – setting aside days to prep and bake (“We have three days to make more than 700 of each of two recipes,” she said,) and decorating, which features four full trees each with a unique theme, and, she says ‘Decorating to the hilt” throughout the inn.

“It’s elegant, not overdone,” she said.

This year, she’ll be serving Chunky Monkey Cookies and Almond Cranberry Cookies, recipes they’ve been tweaking for months.

To add to the ambiance, their Atrium overlooking the river becomes the Music Center, with local acoustic guitar performer and teacher Wayne Peabody and his students performing throughout the day.

Their location, she said, makes them the first or last stop for most on the tour.

A side tip: in the days running up to the event, the inn team likes to, as she said, “rope in” guests to help prepare. You can bake, decorate, sing along and more.

“We have guests who come then just to take part in that,” she said.

At the other end of the tour in Chocorua, the Farmstand B&B (https://www.thefarmstand.net) is only in their third year of participating, but are all in on the effort and fun.

“We jumped into this three years ago just to get some more exposure for our little Inn,” said Innkeeper Kimball Packard, “And before you knew it, we were baking 1,200 cookies.”

They don’t just do cookies though: They create gingerbread sleighs (for sale) that can be filled with cookies, sell maple syrup from on-site trees and invite in local artisans who sell holiday specialties like peanut brittle, fudge, and ornaments on site.

“I’m married to a woman who is crazy about Christmas,” he said, only to have his wife, Neysa, chime in with details: She decorates the kitchen, keeping room, hallways, dining room – just about every spot you can imagine.

Much of the décor is their own, handed down for generations.

Their main cookie this year will be a Gingerbread “Snappy.”

The self-guided tour runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and stops off at woodsy spots like the lovely Snowvillage Inn, where should snow be on the ground (fingers crossed) you may want to take a quick snowshoe around their lovely private trails, the more “in town” feel of the Conway Inn, and the old-school ski town vibe of the Wildcat Tavern.

You’ll be doing good for while having fun:  Some proceeds from the event will benefit End 68 Hours of Hunger, a New Hampshire weekend program that puts nourishing food in the hands of school children to carry them through the weekend.

MWV Cookie Tour Celebrates 25 Years of Sweetness

The best holiday traditions last and last, and the annual Mt Washington Valley Inn to Inn Cookie Tour proves it. Now celebrating 25 years of cookie consumption, the Country Inns in the White Mountains will continue the sweetest holiday event once again on December 10-11, 2022, 11:00 – 3:00pm .

While interrupted by Covid for a year, the Mt Washington Valley Inn to Inn Cookie Tour is the longest running cookie tour in New England, and a holiday tradition that’s preserved in memories and recipe collections of thousands of cookie lovers and holiday revelers.

Once again in 2022, this holiday festival combines overnight stays at beautiful inns in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with a scrumptious inn to inn cookie tour at eight beautiful and historic properties plus decorating ideas and take home recipes.  Many of the inns on the tour will also feature a special demonstration, artists or craft sales for your holiday shopping, too.

Each of the eight inns on the 24th Annual Inn to Inn CookieTourwill feature original recipes for everything from sweet to savory holiday treats along with decorating inspiration from exquisite holiday décor and trees.  Once again, this year, tourgoers will receive a keepsake collection of recipes for sweet treats from each inn in a keepsake cookbook too.

One aspect of the tour has evolved with Covid.  Masking will be optional, but tourgoers are asked to observe social distancing.  Innkeepers also practice safe serving protocols to ensure the welfare of guests.

Cookie Tour tickets are available now by reserving a  lodging package from participating inns, and this is the best way to secure a ticket for a weekend of cookies. Each participating inn offers a VIP Lodging package including two-nights accommodations, two tour tickets ($70 value), the 2022 Holiday Recipe Cookbook, a keepsake ornament and the chance to enter drawing for a $250 getaway gift certificate from the Country Inns in the White Mountains. Some inns are adding dinners, après-tour receptions, and more. Additionally, some inns will offer one night packages too. For more information on all lodging packages being offered, simply click here .

Those not wishing to reserve an overnight package may purchase tickets Nov 21 – Dec 2, 2022 (or until sell out) for $35 per person by purchasing tickets online at https://cookietour.square.site/ starting on November 21.  Tickets are limited and all tickets must be reserved in advance. There will be no ticket sales on the day of the event as tickets generally sell out, so make plans early to attend the tour.

Currier & Ives Cookie Tour

The 11th annual Currier and Ives Cookie Tour was held this weekend and it was an outstanding success! The weather was mild and the roads dry, leading to a large turnout.

Cookie Tour at East Hill Farm

Why “Currier and Ives?” The Monadnock Region is often referred to as the “Currier and Ives Corner” of New Hampshire. With our quintessential large farmhouses, town halls, covered bridges, maple sugar houses, and bucolic scenery, there is no doubt New Hampshire was an inspiration for several lithograph prints like the one below.

American Homestead Winter Currier and Ives

American Homestead Winter Currier and Ives

Careful thought and planning is put into many aspects of the annual cookie tour to make it a success. Locations, advertising, signs, ticket and map design, and decorating are all very important. But probably the biggest thing we think about is the type of cookies we are going to make! Preparation begins early as roughly 400 cookies are made by each location on the tour.

Each stop is responsible for providing cookies and refreshments, and the recipe for the cookies served. A few of the cookies that East Hill Farm has served in the past are Molasses Cookie, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie, Mint Truffle Cookie, Merry & Bright Cranberry Delight Cookie, and Salted Oatmeal Cookie with Dark Chocolate. This year our cookie was a Chocolate Dipped Almond Shortbread Cookie. Here is the recipe:

Chocolate-Dipped Almond Shortbread Cookies Yield: 18 cookies

Ingredients: • 1 cup butter • ½ cup white sugar • 2 teaspoons almond extract • 2 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour • Chocolate of your choosing for dipping

Directions: 1. In large wooden bowl, beat butter with sugar and almond extract until light and fluffy. With wooden spoon, stir in flour until smooth and well combined. Divide dough into 2 parts. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. 2. Preheat oven to 300°. 3. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough, one part at a time, about ½ inch thick. Using a 1 ½ inch round cookie cutter, cut out cookies. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. With the end of a wooden spoon, make an indentation in the center of each cookie. 4. Bake 25 – 30 minutes, or until light golden brown around the edges. Cool completely on a wire rack. 5. Melt chocolate, stirring often. Submerge each cookie in melted chocolate as much as you would like and place on parchment paper to cool. Enjoy!
