For The Best Dinner At Dollywood, Just Add Pirates

Pirates voyage dinner theater is a swashbuckling adventure in the smoky mountains..

pirates voyage in pigeon forge

Call it silly and touristy if you must, but I absolutely love a dinner theater attraction—the bigger, louder, and brighter, the better. I've eaten kalua pork and chicken long rice at a luau in Hawaii while hula dancers swayed against a blazing sunset, and I've tapped my toes while watching Irish step dancers and snacking on bangers and mash at Raglan Road in Walt Disney World. But admittedly, I'm not truly happy unless my meal is paired with death-defying stunts and pyrotechnics. These high standards of mine were instilled by none other than Ms. Dolly Parton herself.

I started going to Dolly Parton's Stampede when it first opened in 1988, back when it was the Dixie Stampede . It's in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a tiny town in the Smoky Mountains that's home to Dollywood and to countless other kinds of family entertainment, from a Titanic museum to a lumberjack stunt show to a centuries-old grist mill that's now a restaurant on the banks of the Little Pigeon River. Every time my family would go back to Pigeon Forge, our Dollywood trip wasn't complete unless we sat high up in that arena, watching games of horsemanship and "stampeding" our applause with our feet because, as part of the entertainment, we were eating with our bare hands.

On my most recent trip back, though, I wanted something different. Something daring. Something adventurous. Something... with pirates.

Pirates Voyage dinner theater features battling pirates

Dollywood’s Pirates Voyage dinner show, explained

pirates voyage in pigeon forge

Pirates Voyage is a dinner show that's owned by Dollywood, but isn't part of the park itself—although dinner for an adult costs almost as much as a ticket to the theme park just down the road. Over the course of an hour and a half, guests sit and eat while a show unfolds, combining physical stunts, aerial acrobatics, sword fighting, fire dancing, animal actors, and games of competition. Oh, and mermaids.

The theater's tiered seating is situated around a 300,000-gallon lagoon, which is 15 feet deep and holds two 25-foot pirate ships, one decked out in crimson and one in sapphire. In the center of the pool is a deck with a ship's mast rising up from it and a platform sort of like a crow's nest high overhead. The entire set is visible as soon as you enter the room, but still, I couldn't have anticipated the complexity and quality of the stunts we were about to witness.

Our party included my Dollywood-loving lifelong best friend and her daughters, 8 and 2, whom we were introducing to the wonders of Pigeon Forge for the first time. Our adult tickets were $69.99 each, the 8-year-old's ticket was $35, and the toddler was free as long as she sat on someone's lap. The price of admission includes a four-course meal and unlimited soft drinks, and alcohol is available for purchase. Shows happen almost every night of the year in Pigeon Forge and at the Myrtle Beach location as well.

As soon as we sat down, a server dressed as a pirate came to take our drink order. The meal started with a creamy vegetable soup; I enjoyed the thick bisque purely for the nostalgia, since it was essentially the same recipe as it has been at the Stampede for more than 30 years. As the show progressed, we were served fried chicken, sugar-cured ham, corn on the cob, a roasted potato, and a biscuit, then an apple turnover. The chicken was flavorful and I especially liked the ham, but the meal is a distant second on the list of reasons I enjoyed the experience.

Just as our food started coming out, the lights in the theater went down, and all of a sudden Blackbeard descended from the ceiling, sitting in what I can only describe as a pirate throne. He started the show, a parrot on his arm, setting the scene for what would be the night's competition between the crimson pirates and the sapphire ones. Eventually, there would be challenges they'd try to win to capture the hidden treasure. First, there were going to be some really thrilling stunts.

Mermaids dropped down from the rafters, sitting on ship anchors suspended from the ceiling and diving into the water. A fire-wielding pirate took center stage with a flaming sword, who lit the stage on fire before setting the water itself ablaze. Stunt divers careened off high-dive platforms, plunging into the water and disappearing under the ships. There was a lot of sword fighting, a lot of swinging wildly on ship's rigging, a lot of truly unbelievable feats of strength and skill.

And there were animals, too. Trained dogs performed tricks, tropical birds took flight, and Salty the Sea Lion stole the show with his antics, stealing fish from his pirate trainer and eliciting a huge audience response when he succeeded in getting his treats. Dolly Parton wrote a song for the show, "Sail Away," which plays during the performance, while two performers partner for aerial acrobatics.

The whole thing was bigger and more spectacular than any show I've ever seen at a theme park, and I wasn't the only one who felt that way. The next day, we spent the day at Dollywood riding roller coasters and eating the park's incredible cinnamon bread until we were about to burst. The day after, we went attraction hopping in Pigeon Forge, exploring Wonderworks, the interactive science museum housed in an upside-down mansion, and Magiquest, where we had magic wands and used them to unlock treasures in a medieval-style castle. It was a lot of fun packed into three days.

At the end, I asked my friend's 8-year-old what her favorite part of the whole trip was, fully expecting her to say one of the thrill rides—she goes to Disney a lot and knows her way around a theme park vacation.

"Um," she said, "probably Salty."

A sea lion performing tricks in a pirate lagoon won the whole trip. I honestly can't say I'm surprised. That guy has some real star power.

Is it worth it to buy tickets online instead of at the location/city? I've been told there are coupons for the dinner shows at various locations in Pigeon Forge. I don't know if I want to wait to buy tickets, especially if there's no savings.

No savings on line. But if you're going on a weekend, you may want to be sure tickets are available and get them beforehand.

Is this show appropriate for preschoolers?

Yes! It's family friendly. My 5 year old daughter loved it. It's fun and light hearted.

I have been to many dinner shows and this one takes the cake . The food is pretty good , chicken was flavorful and moist , ham was not bad , soup was splendid everything else was very good . Even if the food would have been horrible, the show would have made it worth it . This show was absolutely stunning . The story , acting , acrobatics , the parrots , sea lions and the fire show were the greatest . Having an above average meal , full mug of your chosen drink and an amazing show sure makes for a great night . Job well done everyone We shall see what tomorrow night brings for the next show .

I was excited for a new experience but was not impressed by this show or the food. Went to the 8:30pm show and I could tell the staff was tired. The fried chicken was dry with no taste. For the price, I thought the food would atleast been edible. Our waiter was not friendly at all but I guess being busy focused on serving everyone. I liked the sea lion show the best. Not something I would go back again.

pirates voyage in pigeon forge

Ok, so I gave it four stars because even though it was not my cup of tea, it was entertaining for the kids and that's what it's about. Is it expensive, yes. Is the food great, not by why means! But the show was entertaining, although I am sure the legal team at Disney might have a different point of view. It's expensive, food isn't great, it's certainly not enough, but it's an experience!! If you can swing it financially and you are in pigeon forge, then by all means, give it a try. The performers were into it and our services was great. It's not something we will do again if ever in the area again. Not because of any particular reason other than there is n lot of other stuff to do in this town and a pirate show isn't always going to be on top of the list.

First time here and absolutely loved the show and food. It was an awesome show for adults too. The service was great and loved the ambience.

Overall it was a good experience because of the show. Great for kids. I would rate the show as 5/5 and the food as 2/5. Food is comparable to what you find in a cafeteria at a ski lodge. Edible but not tasty.

We had a fantastic time at the Pirate Voyage dinner. We went on a Wednesday to the 6pm show and arrived 15 minutes early. The parking area was large and we walked right in with no wait time. We found our seats and still had time to get the kids the "pirate crew makeover" and some drinks. The show was good, wait staff was friendly and food was yummy with big portions. And our Crimson crew won!!!!! We've done other dinner shows and this one is our new favorite!

Food was amazing, not a huge fan of apple pie though so I didn't eat dessert. Hard to understand what some of the people on stage were saying, I think I need Mully to translate... lol

There's better dinner shows on the same street...Dolly's Stampede is one of them. Our seats were terrible, we only saw half the show and that's being generous. People should not be seated in the area we sat. The only truly good view is the VIP seating, otherwise you'll always miss something. The food wasn't very good, even though it's literally the same food as Dolly's Stampede (which we attended the previous night with no complaints). The fried chicken was ok (very small), but the other sides and meat were dry and overcooked; the soup lacked flavor and was very watered down - even though it was the same soup as the Stampede?!?! This made no sense to us, maybe the pirate chef(s) need a refresher course...they can learn a thing or 2 from the Stampede chef(s). Our server was also rude - she kept insisting that we tip her more and kept waiving other people's tips in our face trying to guilt trip us into us giving her more cash. Never in my life has that happened before and it didn't sit right with us - it left a bad taste in my mouth so it was unfortunate that's the vibe we had as we left the show. The best part was the acrobats by far - they were so talented and the tricks we could see were amazing...the rest I assume was good but it was completely blocked by the giant pirate boat in front of us so I can't say for certain. Overall I wouldn't waste my money here again. Dolly's Stampede down the road is owned by the same company but is literally a million times better, I would recommend that show over this one in a heartbeat.

Dolly Parton Abandons Dollywood For Florida Following Police Investigation, Opens New Themed Adventure

in Entertainment

A person with long blonde hair, wearing a blue and white outfit with star patterns, stands in front of a castle with spires, reminiscent of a Dollywood Drama. The background features a large fairy-tale castle and a scenic landscape at dusk, under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

Dolly Parton is setting her sights on Florida for her next themed venture, expanding past all she has accomplished with Dollywood, and moving into the theme park state.

A person with long blonde hair and a sparkly blue and white outfit standing in front of the Dollywood sign, channeling their inner Dolly Parton. They are smiling with their arms raised. The background includes colorful flowers and part of a building.

The Story of Dollywood

Found within the Smoky Mountains, Dollywood has become synonymous with family fun and nostalgic charm. For over three decades, the park has served as a beloved destination, offering visitors a unique blend of thrilling rides, captivating shows, and a deep connection to the region’s heritage.

But Dollywood’s journey hasn’t always been under the warm glow of Dolly Parton’s signature style. This exploration delves into the park’s rich history, revealing the fascinating transformation from humble beginnings to a theme park giant.

Dollywood’s story starts not with dazzling fireworks, but with the chug of a steam train. In the early 1960s, the Robbins brothers envisioned a park transporting guests back to the Civil War era. They christened it “Rebel Railroad,” featuring a saloon, blacksmith shop, and general store, all set against the backdrop of simulated battles.

A decade later, Art Modell acquired the park, which had since been renamed “Goldrush Junction” and introduced attractions like a log flume ride and an outdoor theater. In 1976, Pete and Jack Herschend further shaped the park’s identity, transforming it into “Silver Dollar City Tennessee.” This period saw significant upgrades, including the iconic grist mill that still produces Dolly’s famous cinnamon bread today.

Dolly Parton’s love for the Smokies and her vision for a theme park resonated with the Herschend brothers. In 1986, a dream became reality as Dollywood was born. This marked the beginning of a new era, with the park infused with Dolly’s signature spirit.

The church was renamed in honor of her doctor, a museum celebrating her life story was established, and special events were revamped to reflect the park’s new heartbeat. The rebranding proved an instant success, with visitor numbers doubling in the first year and continuing to grow steadily ever since.

Dolly Parton with blond hair and a bright smile is sitting on a couch, holding a pink phone to her ear. Behind her, there are colorful flowers and green plants in a cozy indoor setting.

Originally featuring four distinct themed areas – Craftsman’s Valley, Rivertown Junction, Village Square, and Fun Country (later renamed County Fair) – Dollywood has continually expanded its footprint.

The 1990s ushered in the arrival of the Dentzel Carousel, replacing the Silver Dollar Saloon, alongside impressive additions like the Gaslight Theater, Valley Theater, and Eagle Mountain Sanctuary. A circular pathway was implemented, seamlessly connecting the park’s diverse offerings. New themed areas like Showstreet, Adventures in Imagination, Daydream Ridge (later Dreamland Forest), Timber Canyon, and Wilderness Pass further enriched the visitor experience.

These expansions paved the way for iconic attractions like the Wonder Wheel, Tennessee Tornado, Thunderhead Coaster, Swingamajig, Barnstormer, Amazing Flying Elephants, and Treetop Tower. Upgrades continued throughout the years, with the original carousel replaced by a modern counterpart.

Dollywood’s commitment to excellence extends beyond exhilarating rides. The park boasts a diverse culinary scene, from hearty comfort food at Aunt Granny’s Restaurant to delectable treats at Crossroads Funnel Cakes. Local artisans showcase their talents in various shops, offering everything from home décor and artwork to clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs.

Special events have also evolved, ensuring there’s always something new for returning guests. Throughout this evolution, Dollywood has never lost sight of its core values – creating lasting memories for families and fostering a deep connection to the Smoky Mountain spirit.

For a complete Smoky Mountain escape, Dollywood offers two on-site resorts. HeartSong Lodge & Resort, boasting luxurious accommodations and breathtaking mountain views, caters to families. DreamMore Resort and Spa, recently revitalized with a Dolly-inspired makeover, provides guests with priority park access and a taste of Parton’s signature hospitality. The addition of Dollywood’s Splash Country waterpark in later years further broadened the park’s appeal, offering a refreshing escape on hot summer days.

Most recently, one man had a cardiac arrest at the water park.

Dollywood confirmed a guest received medical attention from park lifeguards on Friday afternoon. They added in a statement that the guest “elected to exit the park for the remainder of the day” and refused further assistance.

Dollywood is in the midst of a major transformation, fueled by a $500 million investment over the next decade. Highlights of this renovation include the newly opened HeartSong Lodge & Resort, a luxurious getaway inspired by Dolly Parton’s affection for the Smoky Mountains. Another notable addition is The Dolly Parton Experience, a cutting-edge exhibit that reportedly brought Parton to tears.

This immersive experience, replacing the former Chasing Rainbows museum, takes visitors on a journey through Parton’s life, from her modest beginnings to her rise to global fame.

A woman with blonde hair waves from a red carriage adorned with an abundance of colorful flowers. A man in a beige suit and cowboy hat sits beside her. Spectators in the background watch and capture the moment at Dollywood Theme Park. The scene appears festive with vibrant decorations.

Dolly Parton Goes to Florida

While Dolly has done wonders at Dollywood, it seems her sights are set on a new venture in Florida.

Dolly Parton is expanding her Pirate’s Voyage Dinner and Show restaurant to Florida. Scheduled to open in 2025, the new 60,000-square-foot indoor theater will feature over 1,000 seats and a “four-course pirate’s feast.”

This will be the third location for the popular dinner show, following successful openings in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Pigeon Forge, TN. The new venue will be situated at Park Pier in Panama City Beach, in the Florida panhandle.

“I’m so excited about bringing this show to such a great destination,” Dolly said. “With pirates, mermaids, exciting acrobatics, pyrotechnics, and even a few songs that I wrote, it’s a show that is perfect for all ages.

My Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show has been a huge success in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and I knew that Panama City Beach was the perfect spot to open our third location,” Dolly said.

“Everyone knows that I dream big, so we are going ‘overboard’ with the details as we prepare everything – from the show to the four-course pirates feast to the exterior of the building itself. I told my folks to get started as soon as possible, so we’re breaking ground for construction in January!”, per Wesh .

For a taste of what is coming to Florida, take a look below:

While the show is not opening in Orlando, Florida is a massive tourist destination, with Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, and so much more attracting millions to the state each year; adding Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show is a great idea for instant guests, and an excellent way for Dolly to dabble into Florida, and possibly expand into Orlando with her theme park expertise in the future.

As American vacation trends shift, Dollywood has solidified its position as a top domestic destination, particularly for those seeking memorable staycations. A 2024 survey by Radical Storage reveals a fascinating dichotomy in vacation preferences: while half of Americans crave international adventures, the other half prioritize domestic escapes, with a significant majority (over 80%) expressing interest in staycations.

While Walt Disney World remains the most visited landmark in the US, Dollywood has emerged as a leader in a different category – visitor desire to return. A recent study by InsureandGo, a travel insurance company, awarded Dollywood a phenomenal “Come Back” score of 94 out of 100, placing it at the global top spot. This exceptional achievement speaks volumes about the unique and cherished memories Dollywood cultivates for its guests.

Dollywood’s success as a staycation destination can be attributed to several factors .

The park’s distinct blend of thrilling rides, captivating shows, and a deep connection to the Smoky Mountain heritage resonates with visitors. Beyond the attractions, Dollywood excels at creating a welcoming and memorable experience, fostering a sense of nostalgia and family bonding that keeps guests longing for a return visit.

Dollywood has recently undergone a police investigation after a string of car burglaries.

“According to Pigeon Forge Police Chief Richard Catlett, officers witnessed a Jeep Cherokee being driven erratically on Sunday night and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the suspects fled the scene at high speed in an area deemed too congested for a safe pursuit. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the Jeep itself was reported stolen. A separate investigation by PFPD is underway concerning 11 car burglaries that occurred late Sunday night at Dollywood. Chief Catlett confirmed that some of the stolen items from Dollywood were later recovered inside the abandoned Jeep.”

What Else is Dolly Parton Up To?

Dolly Parton, the iconic country music legend, may have bid farewell to touring, but her creative spirit shows no signs of slowing down. A flurry of upcoming projects highlight her diverse talents and unwavering dedication to her craft.

In November, Parton delves deep into her family history with the release of her new album, “Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables.” This project is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a poignant exploration of her roots and the wellspring of inspiration that has fueled her remarkable career.

The album’s release will be accompanied by a captivating four-part documentary series, offering fans an intimate glimpse into Parton’s formative years and the enduring influence of her family.

Dolly Parton, wearing a white fringe dress extends her arms and smiles, surrounded by a group of people in colorful, themed costumes, all performing a lively dance number. The scene appears festive and joyful.

Parton’s innovative spirit shines brightly in “Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs in Symphony.” This unique live production transcends the traditional concert experience. A full orchestra will breathe new life into Parton’s iconic hits, while captivating video presentations featuring Parton herself will grace the stage. This immersive format allows audiences to connect with her music and stories in a fresh and captivating way, even in her absence.

Parton’s creativity extends far beyond the realm of music. She collaborates with her sister Rachel on a forthcoming cookbook titled “Good Lookin’ Cookin’.” This playful title, a nod to the legendary Hank Williams, hints at the book’s delightful content. “Good Lookin’ Cookin'” promises to be a treasure trove of cherished family recipes and festive holiday menus, offering fans a glimpse into Parton’s love for good food and the traditions she holds dear.

Parton ventures into a new creative space with the launch of her first wine collection, aptly named “Dolly Wines.” This exciting project marks a collaboration between Parton Family Cellars, established by Parton herself, and Accolade Wines, a leading global wine company. This venture allows Parton to share her passion for quality and her appreciation for the finer things in life with a whole new audience.

A woman with blonde curly hair, wearing a white and blue embellished outfit, smiles while holding a blue and white wine bottle. The background is a blue bokeh with a butterfly, and text reads, "From me to you. Love, Dolly.

Dolly Parton’s multifaceted approach to her career is truly inspiring . Whether delving into her family history, reimagining her music in a new format, sharing cherished recipes, or embarking on a new business venture, she consistently pushes boundaries and demonstrates the boundless potential of her creative spirit.
