Panama is a country located on the isthmus that unites Central America and South America. The Panama Canal, a famous milestone of human engineering, runs through its center and links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to create an essential shipping route. In the capital, Panama City, clubs, casinos and modern skyscrapers contrast with the colonial buildings of Casco Viejo and the jungle of the Metropolitan Natural Park.

The Panama Canal is a navigation channel located between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It crosses the narrowest point of the isthmus of Panama (82 km). Considered one of the great works of world engineering of the 20th century, the canal operates through locks at each end that lift ships to Gatun Lake, a lake artificial created to reduce the amount of work required to excavate the canal, to 27.5 meters above sea level, and then lower it to the level of the Pacific or the Atlantic. Before its opening, the natural passages used between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn, located at the southern tip of Chile.

Since its inauguration on August 15, 1914, the canal has managed to shorten maritime communication in time and distance, boosting commercial and economic exchange by providing a short and relatively cheap transit route between the two oceans, decisively influencing the patterns of global trade, driving economic growth in developed and developing countries, as well as providing the basic impetus for economic expansion in many remote regions of the world. In 2012, the United States China, Chile, Japan and South Korea were the five main users of the canal, which takes eight to ten hours to cross. The expanded canal opened in 2016, after a decade of works.

Causeway Amador

shutterstock_1221862447.jpg

Enjoy one of the most fun outdoor places in Panama City. This sea route was built using the material extracted during the excavations of the Panama Canal, between 1904 and 1914. It extends 6 kilometers towards the Pacific Ocean, connecting the mainland with the islands of Naos, Perico and Flamenco. Between the 1920s and 1980s, fortifications were built here to protect the southern entrance to the interoceanic waterway, as part of a military base that was first called Fort Grant, and then Fort Amador.

Many of these buildings now serve as headquarters for restaurants, shops and clubs where residents and tourists enjoy themselves. From here you can see the urban skyline of Panama City and the Pacific entrance to the canal, while you walk, jog, skate, ride a bicycle, rent electric scooters or simply sit and drink. It is from this area that ships leave for Taboga Island and the Las Perlas archipelago. You can also rent kayaks or paddles to paddle in the bay, buy local products at the craft centers, or eat at one of the restaurants in the area: there are Arabic, Italian, Japanese and, of course, typical Panamanian options. Don't miss a visit to the Punta Culebra Natural Center operated by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Biomuseo.

Biomuseo Panama

bio.jpg

The Biomuseo — a powerful conjunction between science and art, is a natural history museum dedicated to Panama that explores the relationship between its biodiversity and its culture. In 8 exhibits it tells the story of the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama 3 million years ago, and how that emergence united continents and divided seas, changing the world forever. The museum's controversial design is the only one of its kind in the entire region. Designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry, in his first foray into Latin America. After having been paralyzed on several occasions, in September 2009 it had reached 75% progress.1 On October 2, 2014, the Biomuseo opened its doors to the public with 5 of its 8 galleries. This first part of the history of the Permanent Exhibition tells us the importance and evolution, natural and cultural, of the isthmus of Panama. In May 2019, the last 3 permanent exhibitions were inaugurated, completing the construction of the original project.

Casco Viejo

shutterstock_1258915150.jpg

The Old Town or Casco Viejo is the name given to the site where Panama City was moved in 1673. This city, laid out in a reticular shape towards the four cardinal points, was characterized by the axiality of its streets and shutters, which earned it to be considered a classic model of an Indian city. It is located on a small peninsula, surrounded by a blanket of rocky reefs, within the current district of San Felipe. In 1997, the Old Town of Panama was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The original settlement of Panama City, which today makes up the archaeological site of Panama Viejo, was sacked by English pirates under the command of Henry Morgan in January 1671. As a result of this incident, the city was almost completely destroyed. The Spanish Crown then approved the transfer of the city to a small peninsula, located approximately 8 km from the original settlement. This peninsula was surrounded by reefs that were exposed when the tide was low, which would make it difficult for enemy ships to approach. The construction work was supervised by the new governor, Antonio Fernández de Córdoba, a soldier with vast experience in the construction of military fortifications. The founding ceremony of the new city took place on January 21, 1673, two years after the pirate attack. Initially it was made up of about 300 homes belonging to the wealthy families of the time and surrounded by thick walls that excluded it from the rest of the population. The central point of this new city was the Plaza Mayor, in front of which stands the Metropolitan Cathedral. The system of walls built around this city had an eminently military purpose, in order to prevent a new attack by pirates. This is how three powerful bastions were built: Barlovento, Mano de Tigre and Puerta de Tierra. The latter had the function of entering and exiting the city towards the suburbs, as the city outside the walls was called. By the end of the 18th century, the seafront was reinforced, with the construction of the Baluarte and Punta de Chiriquí, completed with a system of vaults. Despite all efforts to keep the city safe from external dangers, the new city was the victim during the 18th century of three large fires that partially destroyed it and modified its initial structure. The current configuration dates back to the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.3 This restructuring allows the insertion within the ruins and colonial buildings, neoclassical, Afro-Antillean buildings and small examples of art deco, which differentiates it from other helmets. ancient buildings from cities like Cartagena de Indias and Quito, which have an almost exclusively colonial style.

Panama Viejo

v.jpg

Old Panama or Old Panama is the name given to the archaeological site where Panama City was located from its founding in 1519 until 1671. Its first name was Our Lady of the Assumption of Panama. The city was moved to a new location, about ten kilometers to the southwest, when it was destroyed after an attack by the English pirate Henry Morgan, in the early 1670s. Considered the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of America, it remains today several ruins that make up this archaeological site.

The city of Panama, founded by a Spaniard of Judeo-convert origin, Don Pedro Arias Dávila, better known as Pedrarias Dávila, on August 15, 1519, the day of Our Lady of the Assumption. This city replaced Santa María la Antigua del Darién and Acla, becoming the capital of Castilla del Oro. On September 15, 1521, by Royal Decree, it received the title of City and a coat of arms conferred by Charles I of Spain as well as its official motto: Very Noble and Very Loyal Panama City. This new Spanish population was established in an area originally occupied by an Aboriginal community; For this reason, archaeological evidence of pre-Columbian cultures has been found at this site. The expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire of Peru in 1532 departed from this place and it was a stopover on one of the most important commercial routes on the American continent, which led to the famous fairs of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo, where most of the time passed. gold and silver extracted from the mines that the Spanish exploited in America. By 1541 the city had about 4,000 inhabitants; between Spaniards, indigenous people and African slaves. In 1607, the city had several streets, a main square and two other small squares.

Gamboa Rainforest

Captura de Pantalla 2023-10-26 a la(s) 10.07.44 p. m..png

Gamboa is a town in Panama located in the Panama Canal zone, in the area where Gatun Lake meets the Chagres River. Located in the middle of a rainforest 32 kilometers from Panama City, it has become one of the main tourist destinations in the country due to its ecotourism.

The origin of Gamboa is associated with the construction of the Panama Canal. The area began to be populated in 1911 with houses and cabins on the banks of the Chagres River for workers building the Panama Canal, where United States soldiers later resided until 1999.

Gamboa's main tourist attractions are related to ecotourism. Among them are the Summit Municipal Park, home of the harpy eagle (Panama's national bird) and the Soberanía National Park, rich in biodiversity. Inside the park is a scientific research station operated by the Smithsonian Institute12 and the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, an ecotourism hotel.1 Its vast nature has inspired stories and narratives, as in the case of Gamboa 3:15 by Panamanian author Saúl Pérez Tapia. A story of fiction and supernatural activities, which takes place in a residence in the area.

TDC in Panama City Beach talks about how Gulf Coast Jam impacts economy

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Many of those Gulf Coast jammers who came in from out-of-town help contribute to our economy. They may have brought lots of traffic with them, but they’ve also brought a big boost to our local economy.

Tourism officials say this event helps elevate Panama City Beach to a level that few destinations have. They say the first weekend in June is the slowest of the season with people just getting out of school. So, we’re told Gulf Coast Jam is the kickoff to the summer on our beaches and sets the economy up for a good travel season.

“The great thing about Gulf Coast Jam is two thirds of the people you know come from out of town and about a third of the people come are local residents,” said Dan Rowe, Executive director of the Bay County Tourist Development Council. “So they’re benefitting from Gulf Coast Jam being here which is a great opportunity for locals to get out and experience it.”

Tourism staff say having so many people fill up hotels and condos, as well as eating in restaurants, helps with the tourist development tax collection, which funds things like beach Maintenace.

Panama prepares to evacuate first island in face of rising sea levels

Aptopix panama guna indigenous island.

GARDI SUGDUB, Panama (AP) — On a tiny island off Panama’s Caribbean coast, about 300 families are packing their belongings in preparation for a dramatic change. Generations of Gunas who have grown up on Gardi Sugdub in a life dedicated to the sea and tourism will trade that next week for the mainland’s solid ground.

They go voluntarily — sort of.

The Gunas of Gardi Sugdub are the first of 63 communities along Panama’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts that government officials and scientists expect to be forced to relocate by rising sea levels in the coming decades.

On a recent day, the island’s Indigenous residents rowed or sputtered off with outboard motors to fish. Children, some in uniforms and others in the colorful local textiles called “molas,” chattered as they hustled through the warren of narrow dirt streets on their way to school.

“We’re a little sad, because we’re going to leave behind the homes we’ve known all our lives, the relationship with the sea, where we fish, where we bathe and where the tourists come, but the sea is sinking the island little by little,” said Nadín Morales, 24, who prepared to move with her mother, uncle and boyfriend.

An official with Panama’s ministry of housing said that some people have decided to stay on the island until it's no longer safe, without revealing a specific number. Authorities won’t force them to leave, the official said on condition of anonymity to discuss the issue.

Gardi Sugdub is one of about 50 populated islands in the archipelago of the Guna Yala territory. It is only about 400 yards (366 meters) long and 150 yards (137 meters) wide. From above, it’s roughly a prickly oval surrounded by dozens of short docks where residents tie up their boats.

Every year, especially when the strong winds whip up the sea in November and December, water fills the streets and enters the homes. Climate change isn't only leading to a rise in sea levels, but it's also warming oceans and thereby powering stronger storms.

The Gunas have tried to reinforce the island’s edge with rocks, pilings and coral, but seawater keeps coming.

“Lately, I’ve seen that climate change has had a major impact,” Morales said. “Now the tide comes to a level it didn’t before, and the heat is unbearable.”

The Guna’s autonomous government decided two decades ago that they needed to think about leaving the island, but at that time it was because the island was getting too crowded. The effects of climate change accelerated that thinking, said Evelio López, a 61-year-old teacher on the island.

He plans to move with relatives to the new site on the mainland that the government developed at a cost of $12 million. The concrete houses sit on a grid of paved streets carved out of the lush tropical jungle just over a mile (2 kilometers) from the port, where an eight-minute boat ride carries them to Gardi Sugdub.

Leaving the island is "a great challenge, because more than 200 years of our culture is from the sea, so leaving this island means a lot of things,” López said. “Leaving the sea, the economic activities that we have there on the island, and now we’re going to be on solid ground, in the forest. We’re going to see what the result is in the long run.”

Steven Paton, director of the Smithsonian Institution’s physical monitoring program in Panama, said that the upcoming move “is a direct consequence of climate change through the increase in sea level.”

“The islands on average are only a half-meter above sea level, and as that level rises, sooner or later the Gunas are going to have to abandon all of the islands almost surely by the end of the century or earlier.”

“All of the world's coasts are being affected by this at different speeds,” Paton said.

Residents of a small coastal community in Mexico moved inland last year after storms continued to take away their homes. Governments are being forced to take action, from the Italian lagoon city of Venice to the coastal communities of New Zealand .

A recent study by Panama’s Environmental Ministry’s Climate Change directorate, with support from universities in Panama and Spain, estimated that by 2050, Panama would lose about 2.01% of its coastal territory to increases in sea levels.

Panama estimates that it will cost about $1.2 billion to relocate the 38,000 or so inhabitants who will face rising sea levels in the short- and medium-term, said Ligia Castro, climate change director for the Environmental Ministry.

On Gardi Sugdub, women who make the elaborately embroidered molas worn by Guna women hang them outside their homes when finished, trying to catch the eye of visiting tourists.

The island and others along the coast have benefitted for years from year-round tourism.

Braucilio de la Ossa, the deputy secretary of Carti, the port facing Gardi Sugdub, said that he planned to move with his wife, daughter, sister-in-law and mother-in-law. Some of his wife’s relatives will stay on the island.

He said the biggest challenge for those moving would be the lifestyle change of moving from the sea inland even though the distance is relatively small.

“Now that they will be in the forest their way of living will be different,” he said.

Juan Zamorano reported from Panama City.
