METALLICA Is Officially Top Touring Metal Artist Of Last 40 Years

For its 40th anniversary, Pollstar , the trade publication dedicated to covering the worldwide concert industry, has created two special charts that reflect the overall impact of box-office realities during the four decades of the Pollstar Era, beginning in 1980 through the present. The two special charts present the "Top Touring Artists Of The Pollstar Era", both ranking the top 150 headlining acts during Pollstar 's entire history. Each listing is comprised of cumulative totals for each artist and compiled from all the thousands of box-office reports Pollstar received since the early 1980s. Both charts present the Top Touring Artists, but one is ranked by gross and the other by the number of tickets sold. For both, Pollstar has counted only headlining shows for each act, omitting results from any festival appearance since the festival itself is eligible to rank on the All-Time Boxoffice chart, as many of them have. Pollstar also did not include any event where the touring artist participated as a support act.

Back in 2019, less than a year before the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the globe, Pollstar named METALLICA one of the top-earning hard rock and metal tours of the "2019 Midyear" reporting period, which covered the six-month range from November 22, 2018 to May 22, 2019. The group's 21 North American "WorldWired" arena shows during the reporting period grossed a total of $41.7 million, good for an average per-show gross of $1.99 million. With an average attendance of more than 16,000, the band moved nearly 350,000 tickets altogether. On a per-show basis, METALLICA did even better internationally, as five of the six European stadium concerts the group performed in May 2019 grossed a combined $28 million thanks to an average attendance of more than 58,000. Altogether, the band grossed $69.7 million in the six-month reporting period, making the group the fourth highest-grossing act in the world during that time behind only Elton John , Pink and Justin Timberlake — each of whom sold fewer tickets but had a higher average ticket price.

METALLICA played its first concert of 2022 on February 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show, which was reportedly attended by 60,000 fans, featured support from GRETA VAN FLEET and ICE NINE KILLS .

The Las Vegas show took place more than two months after METALLICA 's two 40th-anniversary concerts at Chase Center in San Francisco, California which featured different setlists. They were part of METALLICA 's "San Francisco Takeover", a four-day citywide celebration of the band's 40th anniversary that also included a film festival, photo exhibit and curated lineup of smaller venue shows featuring other acts.

In February, METALLICA announced it will perform only two U.S. summer stadium shows in 2022: Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, New York on August 11, and PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 14. Both shows will feature special guests GRETA VAN FLEET and ICE NINE KILLS .

METALLICA previously played at Highmark Stadium on July 25, 1992, and Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium on July 26, 1992.

Metallica began their WorldWired tour in support of Hardwired… To Self-Destruct back in 2016.

James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo have toured across the world since then – and it’s been revealed by Billboard how much cash the mammoth run of shows have brought in.

The website reports that the band’s grossed $10.3 million throughout January – taking the total figure to $155.9m since the live shows got under way.

As for ticket sales, Metallica have sold a total, so far, of 1,554,470 – and that’s before they hit the road again in the US later this month .

Metallica will also return to Europe later this year for shows throughout May, June, July and August.

Billboard also report that since 1990 when they began tracking tour earnings, Metallica have grossed more than $600m and sold over 10m tickets around the world.

Earlier this month, Metallica released their new album Helping Hands… Live & Acoustic At The Masonic , which was recorded in San Francisco in early January, with the event organised in aid of their  All Within My Hands Foundation .

Metallica, KISS, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Queen + Adam Lambert were among the top-grossing touring artists of the 12-month period ending on October 31, according to reports in Billboard .

In the magazine’s just-published year-end Boxscore chart was topped for the second consecutive year by Ed Sheeran, Mostly headed up by pop and hip-hop artists, the year’s Top Tours chart are closer to earth than the few gargantuan tours that reigned over 2018. Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé & Jay-Z all hit career highs with massive global stadium tours, topping $400 million (Sheeran’s ‘The Divide’ Tour), $300 million (Swift’s ‘Reputation] Stadium Tour), and $250 million (The Carters’ ‘On The Run II’ Tour).

Metallica were the highest-ranked hard rock act (and sixth overall), with a combined gross of $177 million from 46 reported concerts during the band’s ongoing ‘WorldWired’ tour . The band sold 1.7 million tickets around the world during the 12-month time frame that determined the chart’s rankings.

The initial legs of KISS’ ‘End Of The Road’ tour did brisk business, as the band — which ranked 10th on the year-end chart — grossed $89 million from sales of more than 850,000 tickets at 72 reported shows.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s annual holiday tour continued to be a major draw, as the Yuletide rockers — who ranked 30th on the chart — sold more than 900,000 tickets at 92 reported shows during their 2018 tour for a gross of $57 million. As with KISS and Metallica, these figures don’t represent every show performed during the reporting period, as TSO’s 2018 tour featured 14 additional dates from which attendance figures were not reported to Billboard for whatever reason.

The only other hard rock group included on Billboard’s chart — which ranked artists by gross income rather than the number of tickets sold — was Queen + Adam Lambert (No. 39), who grossed $46 million from sales of 370,000 tickets across 25 reported performances.

Among the other top-grossing acts on the year-end Boxscore chart were perennial top draws such as Elton John (No. 4), The Rolling Stones (No. 5) and Paul McCartney (No. 8).

Metallica crowned “biggest all-time touring band” with $1.4 billion in tickets sold

The post Metallica crowned “biggest all-time touring band” with $1.4 billion in tickets sold appeared first on Consequence of Sound .

Metallica just might be the “biggest all-time touring band,” at least according to a new breakdown by industry-leading concert trade publication Pollstar .

A feature on the Pollstar website , titled “Tour & Destroy: The Case for Metallica as the World’s Biggest Touring Act”, makes a strong argument for the thrash legends as the top dog among touring artists, using statistics and other metrics to back up the claim.

Pollstar utilizes stats that date back to Metallica’s beginnings, asserting that the metal icons have sold 22.1 million tickets and have grossed $1.4 billion on tour since 1982. Those numbers put Metallica ahead of such acts as Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, and other big-time bands.

And while the all-time ticket total is actually second to U2, Pollstar argues that other factors propel Metallica to the top of the heap. Among those considerations is the fact that Metallica has performed in 48 countries and all seven continents, including Antarctica. Furthermore, the metal band is a leader in merch sales, having sold $125 million worth of t-shirts and other concert memorabilia in North America since “The Black Album” was released in 1991.

Metallica show no signs of slowing down, either, as their current “WorldWired Tour” has grossed $430 million on sales of 4.1 million tickets, including the band’s recent “S&M2” concerts in San Francisco.

Pollstar caught up with Lars Ulrich for the feature, and the Metallica drummer explained that the success has to do with the band’s constant push to outdo its past.

(Buy: Tickets to Metallica’s Upcoming Shows )

“I keep thinking and forcing myself to think all our best years are still ahead of us,” said Ulrich. “It’s always, ‘What’s your favorite record?’ It’s the next one, the one we haven’t recorded yet.”

He added, “It’s always about the possibilities, always about what can be, what’s coming. That, to me, is what this is all about and I think that attitude is a big part of the why Metallica still connects to so many people around the world.”

Of course, all of this isn’t without controversy. It was recently revealed that associates of Metallica struck a deal with Live Nation to place tickets directly on the resale market in order to maximize profits.

Metallica’s “WorldWired Tour” will continue to gross additional millions as the band is set to hit Australia and New Zealand with Slipknot this fall, as well as South America with Greta Van Fleet in the spring. Tickets are available here .

Metallica Gross Over $70 Million From 13 Summer Shows

It's good to be Metallica . The veteran metallers are touring at their own pace, and it hasn't really slowed the cash flow coming from the road. According to Billboard's Boxscore data , the band's 13 shows so far from their summer tour of Europe just grossed them in excess of $70 million.

The biggest grossing show during the run came in Meath, Ireland, where the band became one of the rare acts granted access to perform at Slane Castle. The special evening brought in $8,194,075. The second biggest show on the run came at Berlin's Olympicstadion, which sold out the 68,000-plus capacity and earned the band $6,745,329.

It was reported earlier this summer that the band's performance at Hämeenlinna in Finland drew roughly one percent of the entire country's population. That show drew a max capacity 55,519 people and earned the band $5,330,615 in gross sales.

Back in July, Pollstar reported that Metallica, after playing only 26 shows on the year, ranked fourth in worldwide tour earnings among all artists at the halfway point of 2019. At that point, they had grossed a cool $69.7 million.

Metallica still have a handful of "WorldWired" European tour dates left in August, while they'll be back stateside in September for their "S&M2" performances. A tour of Australia and New Zealand is also on the books for the fall. To see Metallica, check out the ticketing info here .

What Has 500 Speakers, 87 Trucks and 2 Nights of No Repeats? Enter Metallica’s ‘M72’ Tour

How the band is getting most of its fans to buy tickets to two shows in a row — and bringing them closer to the action than ever.

By Robert Levine

Metallica

HAMBURG, GERMANY — The pre-concert VIP tour of Metallica ‘s M72 stadium staging is something of a show in itself.

A few hours before the first of two “no repeat” weekend Metallica concerts — where the band plays different songs every night — on May 26, Jon-Michael Marino , a member of the band’s management team is walking the floor of the Volksparkstadion. It is set up for the band’s performance with a giant ring-shaped stage, the center of which will be a fan-filled “Snake Pit,” and eight monolithic towers of monitors and speakers. Each of the towers is anchored by a raised platform that doubles as VIP seating, with eight folding chairs decorated with the black-and-yellow color scheme of the band’s new album, 72 Seasons .

Metallica

The platforms are needed to anchor the towers — which weigh in at 11 tons without the bases, Marino says — so the band’s team figured they might as well put seats there, too. For a fee of $7,272 — the price a deliberate echo of the album title — fans can reserve the entire platform for both nights, complete with a cooler full of drinks and some other bonuses, as what the band calls an “enhanced experience.” The platforms are about half as high as the stage, so “you’re right in front of them,” Marino says, meaning the band. “You feel like maybe you should put your phone away.”

“We try to do something a little different every time we go out,” says Cliff Burnstein , co-founder of the management Q Prime, which has managed Metallica for decades. Metallica has already done arena tours in the round, so it wanted to try doing the same thing in stadiums. But the band’s team felt that the normal setup – a circular stage in the center of a football field, would create too much distance between the group and its audience.

James Hetfield

“I was that kid who used to sit in the last row, so I thought, how do you make this better,” remembers Dan Braun , the band’s creative director and scenic and production designer. (Braun, who has worked for the band for three decades jokes he “grew up in that hotbed of the entertainment business: Milwaukee, Wisconsin.”) “You move the stage closer to the crowd” — hence the ring, which has fans inside and out – “and you create twice as many front-row seats.”

That requires a production that travels in 87 trucks — 45 for the band and its setup, plus two groups of 21 each for the steel stage and towers. Loading in and building the stage and towers takes several days, so while the band uses one setup, the other leapfrogs it to the next city on the tour. (There are 130 people in the band’s crew along, plus 40 steelworkers, local hires and truck drivers.)

Metallica

The load-in is so complicated and expensive that it creates an incentive to play two shows in each venue. “Playing a stadium is so expensive production-wise,” Burnstein says. “The value of doing two shows is there’s only one set-up and load-out, so we’re basically partnering with ourselves to lower the cost.”

Doing pairs of concerts in each city with a pledge to not repeat the same songs, an idea Braun says came from frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, encourages fans to see both shows. “We know from past experience that people will travel for a Metallica show,” Burnstein says — and many fans seem just as interested in traveling for two. (The Hamburg show was packed with fans who would be back two days later, and a few planned to see the band in Munich next year.) Since the band will only play 22 cities in 2023 and 2024, many fans will have to come to them.

Brantley Gilbert and Noah Henson

Are You Ready for the ‘Country Metal’ Sound? Rock’s Revival Takes Rural Route

At first, the band only sold tickets to both shows together, for about 20% less than it would cost to buy both separately, and Burnstein says that between 80% and 90% of fans at each concert will attend both shows. (Fans who want more can buy one of the band’s “I Disappear” passes , different versions of which allow entry to all the shows the band plays on one continent for a year, two continents for a year, or two continents for two years.)

“A Metallica show is half-band and half-audience,” says Braun, who has thought a lot about how the group and the crowd amplifies one another’s energy. “If the band has a better experience, it’s better for the audience. If the audience has a great experience, it’s better for the band. Anything that gets in the way of that is bad.” To him, the key to the production isn’t the scale but the way it can bring fans closer to the action – to give a stadium the immediacy of a smaller room. “I like to challenge the cliches of Metallica,” which he describes as not just a great metal group but a great rock band. “They’re great entertainment,” he says. “The object is to give them the best platform to interact.”

There’s also a desire to make the show memorable — in this case, enough to see twice. “Once you raise the bar to where it is, how do you keep doing better,” says John Zajonc , known as Lug, who has worked for the band on and off for three decades and helps run the tour logistics. “The scale is massive.”
