Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

Backpacks have long been the top choice of students, travelers, and commuters for their rugged durability and spacious interiors. While backpacks excel in storage, they often lack the looks needed to take the place of a sleek handbag or briefcase. Leather backpacks change the rules by elevating the sporty favorite to something you wouldn’t mind carrying straight from the airport to a nice dinner reservation.

Though often pricier than their synthetic counterparts, well-made leather backpacks can deliver years of service with a bit of care. And in many cases, you’ll still have all the necessary spots for things like laptops, tablets, and water bottles built in. If you’re ready to upgrade your backpack to the leather variety, we hand-selected the best options that pack tons of style and won’t weigh your shoulders down.

Best Overall

Leatherology sloan backpack.

The classic silhouette is highly customizable with multiple colorways, sizes, and options to add initials.

Personalization options start at an extra $35 and go up to $150.

With Leatherology’s many personalization options, your leather backpack will be anything but cookie-cutter. We named the brand’s Sloan bag as the best pick for its timeless silhouette, multiple colorways, and the option to add your initials in three different styles: foil stamped, hand painted, or trapunto stitching.

We’re also a fan of how the bag has a neoprene laptop sleeve inside that fits most tablet and laptop sizes, plus side pockets on the outside that keep water bottles within easy reach. If you’re constantly between the office, airport, and gym, this is a pick that will move with you seamlessly. There’s also a mini size for those who don’t need the laptop space.

The Details: 12 x 5 x 16 inches | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Convertible

M.gemi the laura convertible backpack.

The convertible design feels like you’re getting two bags for the price of one.

The slouchy design is less supportive for heavier items like laptops and books.

Who doesn’t love to get more and spend less? M.Gemi’s The Laura convertible backpack offers a two-in-one design that transforms from a tote to a backpack just by sliding the straps. Simple yet elevated, this roomy bag has plenty of interior space, plus three pockets (though there isn’t a laptop-specific one). It’s a great travel option when you need a bag that can pull double duty, and there’s a zipper across the top to keep your packed items secure. In addition to changing on the fly to match your needs, we also appreciate that it’s handmade in small batches with Italian leather.

The Details: 15.7 x 14 x 3.9 inches | 1.7 pounds

Portland Leather Snap Mini Backpack

This leather backpack offers a lot of value in its mini size and comes in four bright colors.

The interior is unlined and only has one pocket.

Whether you’re festival-bound, exploring a new city, or just prefer to keep your hands free during the day, a mini backpack is the perfect alternative to a purse. This leather backpack comes in four bright colors so you won’t easily get lost in a crowd, and it also has adjustable shoulder straps. It’s not the best option if you need tons of space or pockets, but it’s just the right size for carrying basics like a phone, travel-size sunscreen , and sunglasses. At less than half the price of other full grain leather backpacks on our list, it’s also a great value.

The Details: 9 x 8 x 4.5 inches | 1.5 pounds

Best Designer

Strathberry osette leather backpack.

With clean styling and jewelry-like hardware, this is a backpack that’ll blend in at dressier events.

The top doesn’t have a zip closure for extra security or room for a laptop.

Any leather backpack will feel more upscale than its nylon cousins, but this bag from Strathberry is luxe enough to carry in place of a designer tote. And at less than $1,000, it’s much less pricey than many other high-end options. Without room for a tablet or laptop, this isn’t going to be the ideal work bag, but we like it as a comfortable option you can get away with in a more formal environment. We also give it extra points for having protective metal feet on the bottom.

The Details: 10.8 x 9.8 x 6.3 inches

Best for Laptops

Samsonite classic leather backpack.

It’s equipped for work and travel with tons of compartments and dedicated slots for two laptops.

Even with padding, this bag might feel heavy if every pocket is put to use at once.

If you’re in search of a workhorse that can withstand daily commutes and still look nice, the Samsonite Classic Leather Backpack is an excellent mix of form and function. This bag is designed with professionals in mind with its many mesh zip pockets, a tablet pocket, and space for two laptops (looking at you, business travelers ). Plus, there’s padding on the shoulders and back (along with a suitcase sleeve) to keep you comfortable while hauling around all that tech gear. Note that it weighs a tad less than 4 pounds empty, so it could feel a bit heavy when fully packed.

The Details: 18.5 x 12 x 6.5 inches | 3.73 pounds | 15.6-inch laptop pocket

Best Drawstring

Bandolier drawstring leather backpack.

The leather drawstring design lets you travel light without sacrificing style.

There’s no dedicated laptop sleeve to keep it from moving around.

If you love the sporty style and ease of a drawstring backpack, you can opt for an upscale version with Bandolier’s all-leather design. While there’s technically room for a laptop, it falls on the smaller side in terms of interior space, so we recommend this pick for occasions like concerts and day trips where you want to travel light and look good doing it. We also like how this backpack has a D-ring on the front so you can personalize it with charms and keychains.

The Details: 16.8 x 15.5 inches | Fits a 13-inch laptop

Most Stylish

Cuyana leather backpack.

Along with its elegant looks, this leather backpack can be carried as a shoulder bag.

Thin shoulder straps may be better suited for short commutes and non-adventure travel.

It’s no easy feat to find a spacious backpack that has a dedicated laptop space and still looks good enough to take the place of a handbag. Cuyana pulls it off with this leather backpack that can also be worn as a shoulder bag. It’s big without being bulky, so it’s a great companion for trips that don’t require a ton of gear, but you can just as easily tote it to and from the office. Plus, the simplicity means it's a bag that will still feel current several years from now.

The Details: 15.1 x 11 x 7 inches | 16-inch laptop pocket

Best for Everyday

Fossil parker leather backpack.

This leather backpack has style, storage space, and removable straps that convert to a shoulder bag.

There aren’t many pockets for keeping pens or a laptop from moving around freely.

If you want a leather backpack that doesn’t look like a backpack, here’s one that has the elements of a handbag, but with more convenience. The square body feels a bit more unique than traditional backpack styles, yet it’s classic enough to get tons of mileage in your wardrobe. Though the interior is plenty spacious, keep in mind the bag’s three pockets aren’t laptop-sized if a dedicated spot is important to you. We’re always a fan of a phone pocket, and you’ll find a small slip pocket on the exterior back that keeps your cell within reach but out of sight. The best part of this leather backpack is that the adjustable straps can be swapped out to turn it into a shoulder bag, or you can skip the straps altogether and carry it by the top. Fossil also makes a smaller size if you prefer mobility over space.

The Details: 14 x 13 x 5.13 inches | 1.72 pounds | Fits a 16-inch laptop

Tips for Buying a Leather Travel Backpack

Determine what size and capacity you need.

A leather backpack is an investment you’ll use for years, so it’s important to check the specifications and choose the best size for your needs. If you plan to use your leather backpack for work or travel, we suggest looking for something a bit larger with plenty of pocket organization. If your leather backpack will be used as a handbag alternative, you can probably get away with something smaller that’s easier to carry around all day.

We also recommend paying extra attention to laptop space. If you have a 15-inch laptop, note that some leather backpacks only fit a 13-inch laptop, while others don’t have room at all.

Know your desired features

Before making a decision, keep in mind what you’re most likely to be carrying in your leather backpack and where you’ll be going. Padded shoulder straps may be an important feature for travelers and commuters, along with laptop and suitcase sleeves. If you’re never without a water bottle, having a backpack with its own pocket will prevent spills. A convertible bag design may be a better value if you’re also in the market for a tote. And if you’re looking to travel light, a bag without bells and whistles may shed unnecessary ounces.

In terms of material, we suggest everyone look for a full grain leather, which is the highest in quality, or at minimum a pebbled texture that’s better at hiding nicks and scratches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Using a leather conditioner can keep your backpack in better shape for longer by preventing it from drying out or cracking. For extra protection against spills, you can also use a waterproofing spray made for leather. In between treatments, a damp cloth can be used to lightly buff away dirt and stains.

Since leather is more susceptible to damage than nylon, we suggest storing it inside a dust bag when not in use, or rotating it out with other bags so it doesn’t wear out as quickly.

Just like any other backpack, a leather backpack counts as a personal item . Different airlines have different size guidelines, so be sure to check the airline’s website before traveling. The most important thing to consider is if it will fit under the seat in front of you.

With luxurious looks and a soft, supple feel, leather backpacks offer a high-end, waterproof, and extremely durable alternative to fabric bags. Lovely to look at and incredibly practical, faux and genuine leather backpacks are built to last.

Leather backpacks ooze style and quality, but before you buy, consider the following:

Size and Capacity

Leather backpack size

Deciding on the right size leather backpack for your needs will be entirely dependent on how you choose to use it. For the most part, everyday backpacks should be spacious enough to carry your laptop and files or folders while still offering enough room to hold your cell phone, wallet , cosmetics, and other travel essentials .

When it comes to finding the perfect travel backpack for you, leather or otherwise, you will need to consider the best size to suit your needs. Too long and too wide and it will be tempting to overfill it, wreaking havoc on your shoulders; too small and it won’t offer the space you need.

Some backpacks have options that are designed to better suit the contours of the male or female frame, and while larger capacities are available, anywhere between 20 to 35 liters is about the right size to hold everything you need for school, work, or college.

Leather Backpack Weight

By virtue of their design, backpacks help to evenly distribute the weight of your belongings across both shoulders, helping them to remain more comfortable even when full. However, with leather backpacks, there is a common misconception that they have a heavier construction, adding extra pounds to their weight before you have even started packing your gear.

In reality, this is not necessarily true. Genuine leather backpacks go through a tanning process that makes the leather feel soft and supple it also ensures that it is virtually as lightweight as its synthetic counterparts . While faux leather doesn’t offer such benefits, it should still feel fairly lightweight when empty.

Bottom Line: Most of the backpacks we have chosen weigh around 2 pounds when empty, and while this is directly comparable with canvas and other fabric backpacks, there are plenty of reasons why a leather backpack is a much more secure, protective, and desirable choice.

Carry Options

Leather Backpack Carry Options

Backpacks are carried on your back, right? Well, yes, but they aren’t just for throwing over your shoulders. Adjustable shoulder straps are a must to ensure the right fit against your body, and wide straps with extra padding will prevent the straps from digging into your skin .

Most backpacks also come with a top carry handle that can be used when you need to pick your backpack up or set it down, or even as a way of carrying it down low when personal space is in short supply. Some backpacks also come with a sleeve on the back of the bag that is designed to slide over the handle of your suitcase to ensure genuinely hands-free carrying.

Material and Durability

Leather Backpack Material

Leather is an incredibly durable material and one that is resistant to water and damage, making it suitable for use in all kinds of settings. Strong and sturdy, the right leather backpack can last you for many years to come , and when combined with tough seams, metal hardware, and closely woven stitching, your leather backpack will be able to handle anything life throws at it.

Faux leather is an excellent alternative to real leather as it can also repel water and is less prone to scratches and scrapes than real leather is. Genuine leather can also warp and crack if it gets too wet, whereas faux leather won’t be affected in the same way . Highly durable faux leather also offers excellent protection for your belongings.

Leather Backpack Pockets

No matter how handsome your backpack is to look at it, if it’s uncomfortable to carry, you won’t want to use it. While padded straps are a must-have, there are other features that make for a comfortable carry along the way.

Breathable back panels offer increased airflow and reduce the build-up of sweat on your back . Multiple pockets also help to increase your comfort levels, as they allow you to more evenly distribute your belongings to help the backpack sit flat against your back.

Bottom Line: How you pack your backpack will also affect how comfortable it is to carry, so look for backpacks that allow you to pack heavier items close to your back and lighter items towards the outside.

There are lots of affordable faux leather backpacks to choose from, but here are some of our favorites.

For example:

  • Your Apple MacBook Air measures 13 inches. Get a laptop sleeve that fits up to 13 inch laptops.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack V2 30L leads the *ahem* pack in terms of overall ergonomics, rugged weatherproofing, and clever compartments galore. The adjustable laptop sleeve can fit laptops ranging from 13 to 16 inches. The main compartment also has three removable origami-style dividers to help with organization. There are loads of pockets inside and out for all of your peripherals, chargers and smaller electronics.

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack V2 is also waterproof on the outside, which makes this a great choice for traveling, whether around the world or just on your commute. The 400D double poly-coated nylon canvas exterior is super durable, too, so you won't have to worry about this bag ripping on you.

The design of this bag is slightly futuristic, but still low-key enough you can take it to the office. It's tough enough to take on weekend adventures to the outdoors, too. If you want a laptop backpack that can double as a camera bag, you'll love all of the organization features. Despite it's high price, this is the laptop bag to beat.

Best laptop backpacks for travel 2024 - Volher Laptop Backpack

2. Volher Laptop Backpack

If you frequently travel with your laptop, you need a durable, spacious, feature-rich backpack to protect it. The Volher laptop backpack is a top choice, boasting plenty of space in the main compartment, a cushy sleeve for a 15.6-inch laptop, an anti-theft pocket and even a USB port for portable power banks.

The exterior fabric is water-resistant polyester, so you don't need to worry about your laptop if you get caught in the rain. Our review unit was a vibrant pink, but the Volher laptop backpack is available in 8 colors so you can pick a different one if pink's not your thing. Outside, there are a few smaller zipper pockets and mesh side pockets for storing drinks or umbrellas. The straps and padding are comfortable enough for long hours of use when you're on the road or navigating airports.

One of the best features of this laptop backpack is the integrated USB port. You can plug in a portable power bank so you're able to charge your gear directly from the backpack. It's super convenient for those times when you're away from a charging station on a trip, like wandering airports or theme parks.

This rugged utility backpack earned an Editor's Choice award from us, so it's definitely worth checking out.

The Spire Laptop Backpack 2.0 is top-loading with flap-top closure, which is great for quick access. In back there's also a hidden zipper for the laptop compartment, which can accommodate laptops up to 17 inches. Solo New York Duane Hybrid Briefcase

4. Solo New York Duane Hybrid Briefcase

If you're searching for a laptop bag that can go from work to play with ease, take a look at the Solo New York Duane Hybrid Briefcase. It's convertible from a messenger bag to a backpack with a hidden back compartment for packing away the shoulder straps. This is a pretty budget-friendly option, too, coming in at $64.99 (although you can often find it on sale for half that).

The Solo New York Duane Hybrid Briefcase isn't the most durable bag on this list by any means, but it does have a lot of pockets for organization. For the low price, you get dedicated laptop and tablet sleeves, three exterior pockets for stowing smaller gear, and a design that will blend in at the office.

Targus 15-inch Newport Backpack

5. Targus 15-inch Newport Backpack

Not all laptop backpacks are plain gray rectangles. The Targus 15-inch Newport Backpack has a sleek, stylish design featuring premium leatherette accents, metallic trim and a minimalistic tan exterior. It balances style with function so you can protect your laptop and look good at the same time.

Inside are two large main compartments included a padded laptop compartment. There's also two smaller zippered pockets in front and a luggage sleeve in the back. The shoulder sleeves are padded without being too bulky, which also makes this a good backpack for people with narrower shoulders. It's not as durable as some of the other laptop backpacks on this list, but it does come with a limited lifetime warranty.

How to choose the best laptop backpack

Choosing the best laptop backpack to suit your lifestyle (and budget) is hardly a one-size-fits-all process, and there are a variety of factors to consider when shopping for tip-top tech totes:

Price — First things first. What's your price range? There are plenty of budget bags to be found around the $50 mark, but the very best laptop backpacks can cost a pretty penny, upward of $150. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. That being said, if you own an expensive gaming laptop or laptop for programming , you'll want to keep those larger displays protected when you travel. After all, a premium bag is worth the extra spend if it can protect your tech from the occasional "Hulk smash."

Size — How big is the laptop that you plan on schlepping around town with? Some laptop backpacks are petitely portioned (ie, 15L capacities or less), and meant to hold smaller notebooks (ie, up to 13-inch screens). Content creators, business professionals, and gamers on the go will likely be interested in bigger bags (ie, around 30L capacities), which are designed to accommodate larger notebooks (ie, up to 17-inch screens) and a lot more stuff inside the main compartments. Long-story-short: make sure the laptop backpack you buy lines up with the laptop going inside, not to mention the extraneous gear you'll be carrying on the regular. You'll thank us later.

Style — As the name suggests, "laptop backpacks" look like regular backpacks from the outside, with a dedicated sleeve to house your notebook on the inside. Hybrid-style laptop backpacks, however, can transform between backpack and messenger bag with a simple rearranging of straps, adding some extra versatility to your commutes. Hybrid bags are great for office workers and students who rely on top-tier organization to get through the day, with less of an emphasis on rugged features.

Construction — Speaking of which. The best laptop backpacks we've tested have extra-durable construction made from water-resistant materials (eg, 400D nylon canvas shells, anodized aluminum hardware) to keep your tech dry when you get caught in the occasional squall. (Or if you accidentally set the bag down in a puddle.)  Premium models may feature leather or twill construction, fleece-lined laptop sleeves, and hardcore hardware holding everything together. For anyone who takes their tech into the great outdoors on the regular (eg, photographers, drone operators), the more rugged the build materials, the better.

Extra features — Laptop backpacks are, first and foremost, designed to protect your laptop as you jet from point A to point B. Some models, however, come with internal dividers to keep smaller gadgets in place, which is perfect for mobile mavericks everywhere. Look for hidden compartments, built-in keyrings, side-access zippers, luggage straps, daisy-chain tactical webbing, and stretchable side pockets on the premium backpacks we've tested. If you're waffling between a few different models, comparing special features might help you make a final decision.

How we test laptop backpacks

In order to test out the best laptop backpacks, I begin by examining the bag itself, taking note of build materials and overall construction. Does the stitching feel sturdy? Do the zippers open and close in one smooth motion? Are the main compartments intuitively placed? Is there a sternum strap to secure the bag to my chest as I walk? As I examine the backpack inside and out, I ask myself, "Who is this bag for, exactly?"

Once I have a general feel for the bag, it's time to check out the inner laptop sleeve. If possible, I'll test sleeve dimensions with a laptop that has the largest display it's rated to fit. For example, if a given backpack is rated to hold laptops with a 17-inch display, I'll slip a 17-inch system inside; it should be a snug fit. (Extra points for fleece-lined sleeves, which help keep your notebook scratch-free.)

To get a real feel for each laptop backpack, I load them up with roughly 15 pounds of weight, and then go for a casual stroll outside. As I walk around my neighborhood, I first take note of the shoulder straps' padding and overall comfortability; it should be easy to make subtle adjustments to the shoulder straps when I'm on the move, without having to take the bag off.

Some bags might take some time to break in, of course, but the best laptop backpacks are instantly comfortable across my back, with equal weight distribution that doesn't bounce around when I walk. Which is why my favorite backpacks have adjustable sternum straps across the chest to keep everything as snug as a bug in a rug as I'm chugging along.

Last of all, I consider any special features that add extra value to the bag. Is there a water bottle pocket? Extra tablet holders? A luggage strap? Hidden pockets? Budget backpacks won't have much to offer in this regard, but premium backpacks include such goodies as daisy-chain webbing (for exterior carry), stretchable side pockets (for water bottles and/or umbrellas), and hidden pockets to stow your valuables.

  • One of the best-crafted bags on the market
  • 40L = lots of room
  • Sleek and stylish
  • Water resistant
  • Tons of pockets and features
  • Mixed reviews on straps/comfort

#2. Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Runner up – best travel laptop backpack.

leather laptop travel backpack

  • Capacity: 24L
  • Dimensions: 48.5 x 27.5 x 18 cm (19.1 x 10.8 x 7.1 in)
  • Weight: 2.1 lb (0.95 kg)
  • Main Material: Shell 200
  • Size of Laptop Compartment: 16″

The Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack is the smaller version of their original Setout pack. This bag is a 24-liter masterpiece for anyone looking for a smaller laptop bag that feels and looks great. We might have rated it second best travel computer backpack but for many this will come out on top. The Setout Laptop Backpack has plenty of organisational features including mesh pockets and a super-secure area for your laptop. The Setout Laptop is marketed as a laptop bag for those who do lots of air travel and we find it to be a great bag to take onto planes as its easy to find our stuff, and it fits snuggly under seats (even on Ryanair).

Personally I love how compact this bag is – 24L is normally a little small for me but I make an exception for this. While I personally miss having a water bottle pocket on the side, the grab handle is a nice touch for those occasions when my back and neck needs a rest. The zips also open really smoothly. Its size made it feel great to wear day in day out and the quality of the materials felt like it would cope well with daily abuse!

Read our complete Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack Review here.

  • Sexy, minimalist design
  • Tons of features
  • Might be too small for some

#3. Harber London Slim Laptop Pack

Leather laptop backpack.

Harber London Slim Backpack

  • Capacity: 18l
  • Dimensions: 43 x 29 x 9 cm (16.9 x 11.4 x 3.5 in)
  • Weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs)
  • Main Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and waterproof cotton canvas

The Harber London Slim Laptop backpack is stylish and functional. It is quite literally a laptop backpack and won’t fit too much more in (although they do make bigger packs so take a look at their site) and just perfect for minimalists who want something a little bit special. The pack is crafted from Premium Full Grain Leather which feels really classy, soft and supple to touch. The interior is nicely padded, there are loads of pockets for you cables as well as a handle if you want to carry it.

This pack is very different to the other pack on our list and isn’t really comparable to say the more versatile Tortuga. It is however perhaps the most classy and stylish and I felt pretty hip when testing out in my home city; it certainly has more sex appeal than the functional North Face. When they sent me this to try I was impressed. It is a niche product but that for the right person this would be the absolute perfect choice. What I really like is how minimalist it is – no unnecessary bulk and will look good if you’ve got a meeting to attend but want something more practical than a briefcase.

  • Durable and comfortable

4#. Osprey Metron

Best commuter laptop bag.

Osprey Metron

  • Dimensions: 19.29H X 12.99W X 11.02D IN
  • Weight: 2.739 LBS
  • Main Material: 500D recycled high tenacity nylon

At 24l, the Osprey Metron is a well sized daypack which will accommodate your laptop, and lunch quite nicely. There is of course a padded laptop pouch along with enough pockets and pouches for keys, cards and pens. The compression straps are also a nice touch and we appreciated the way we could fasten the backpack down so it deint you won’t stick out like a tortoise and barge into people (as much) when you crowd onto the morning train.

TI personally used this backpack for day to use for a good while before I replaced it with an Osprey Quasar – the latter I found could also be used to double up as a hiking backpack. Though we’ve included it here as the best bag for commuters, our team really loved how versatile this bag felt. Osprey is known for their outdoor bags and our team felt this one was suited to just about anything you could throw at it, from hiking to biking into the office. All in, the quality of the materials, the solid build and integrated rain cover make this daypack tough enough for any adventure!

  • Osprey offer a robust guarantee
  • There aren’t any cons

5#. Gulu Made Inspire Backpack

Most ethical laptop backpack.

Gulu Motivator Pack

  • Capacity: 25 liters
  • Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 9 in
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Main Material: 500D nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15.6 inches

The Gulu Made brand set up shop building a backpacking factory in Uganda and has entrusted the local community with making sustainable backpacks built to last. These bags are designed and built by local tribes. The women of Gulu took modern comfort features into account, adding on water bottle holders and ten different organization pockets with an extra computer sleeve.

Not only is this pack amongst the most stylish I have tried, it is also genuinely well made and the organisational potential is great – the Inspire is the most spacious Gulu-made pack on the market and offers everything you need to commute in a sustainable style. If you are after an ethical product , this is a good on and if you love ethical travel gear, we have a cracking vegan backpack round-up on the site.

  • Ethical brand
  • Pretty inner lining
  • Good organisational potential
  • Not waterproof

#6. Incase Compass Backpack

leather laptop travel backpack

  • Capacity: 27 liters
  • Dimensions: 18 x 11.75 x 5.25 in
  • Weight: 1.39 lbs
  • Main Material: Light-weight Flight Nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 16 inches

Incase is known for making stylish business and laptop backpacks. Expandable, easy to travel with, and well-padded, the Incase Compass is also our choice for the best 17-inch laptop backpack! The bag itself is made out of 300D polyester, and the black option has a triple-coated weather-resistant front panel. The shoulder straps are made with breathable mesh, and the back panels are padded too. The main compartment has plenty of storage space, and it expands by 35% to fit all of the clothes you may need. You can also maintain a slimmer profile if you are just using it for layovers and day trips.

While I personally don’t like the look of this one, we found it to be one of the best laptop bags for travel because of the way the laptop sleeve is set up. This backpack is smaller than others on this list, but the Incase Compass makes use of its space and we hardly felt the limitations. All in, what we loved most about this bag was how the laptop had its own dedicated pocket away from everything else.

  • Great for on-the-go travel
  • Fits up to a 16-inch laptop
  • Padded back panels
  • Zippable laptop compartment makes security checks a breeze
  • Might be too small for long term travelers

#7. Gregory Rune

Best commuter laptop backpack.

Gregory Rhune Backpack

  • Capacity: 28 liters
  • Dimensions: 19″ x 11″ x 9″
  • Weight: 2.74 lbs
  • Main Material: 210D nylon and 420D high-density nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15 inches

The Gregory Rhune brings a durable and sustainable approach to the everyday backpack concept. All fabrics used in this pack are made from recycled materials resulting in a 51% in the production cycles carbon footprint.  However, eco-credentials aside, this is a genuinely bloody good pack with an excellent  attention to details. Designed for an active user the Rhune packs have an integrated shoulder harness pocket that is perfect for ear buds, transit passes, or mints.

The pack is accessed by a top-lid opening that pulls back – that’s not an opening style that I am too used to but it’s fine and actually makes packing and unpacking very easy. Inside the pack, the main compartment is split into 3 handy compartments including a very generous laptop compartment. To the touch, the material used in construction of the Gregory Rhune feels quite strong and durable and yet, the pack feels very light to carry. Overall, this is a great backpack for commutes and for day travel.

  • Mid-Weight 0.925 kg
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Not great for hiking
  • Small water bottle pocket

#8. Timbuk 2 The Division Deluxe

Best small laptop backpack for travel.

Timbuk2 The Division Pack Deluxe

  • Capacity: 18 liters
  • Dimensions: 10.6″ x 5.12″ x 17.3″
  • Weight: 2.2 lb
  • Main Material: Recycled Water resistant materials

Welcome a new snazzy laptop backpack onto the scene that is perfect for your daily commute. The Division laptop has a smart yet simple design with enough storage for your essentials and a 15” rear laptop sleeve and a high-quality finish.

These guys haven’t skipped comfort – it feels nice against the back and on the shoulders with an adjustable chest buckle for extra support. The drawback about this bag is that it’s not big enough to take on most long backpacking trips; however, if you are just looking for a bag for everyday use, and quick weekend trips, this is a swanky, backpack that will keep all your stuff organised.

  • Laptop compartment zips away for easy security checks
  • Dedicated tablet pocket
  • 5-year warranty
  • Great for weekend trips or quick getaways (or super light travelers)

#9. LowePro ProTactic 450

Best laptop backpack for travel photographers.

lowepro photography carry on backpack

  • Capacity: Not specified
  • Dimensions: 13.78″ x 9.06″ x 20.08″
  • Weight: 6.28 lbs
  • Main Material: 900D and 1680D nylon

If you are a serious photographer or have aspirations to be – this bag is next-level.

The LowePro ProTactic 450 is far and away the most functional and stylish backpack for photographers and videographers. The most impressive thing of the ProTactic is how big it is and how well organized the compartments are. Fitting up to two DSLR’s, a 15″ laptop and some drones, this bag is versatile and able to handle all of your tech needs . It’s practically a mobile office! You can go out shooting, pull out your laptop, and begin editing right then and there.

I don’t use a DSLR and so didn’t actually use this as a camera bag. Still, it is one of the best laptop backpacks for many, many reasons. If you want to learn more about the Lowpro, be sure to visit our post on the best camera bags , where we go into more detail.

  • Fits 1 or 2 DSLRs
  • Four camera-access points
  • Ventilation and back support
  • Laptop pocket and additional accessories
  • Only useful for photographers

#10. AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac

Best laptop messenger bag.

aer city messenger bag

  • Capacity: 12 liters
  • Dimensions: 16″ x 11″ x 4.5″
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Main Material: VX-42 X-Pac™ sailcloth exterior by Dimension-Polyant

AER has done it again! They’ve taken the same ergonomic principles that were used for their laptop backpack and applied them to a messenger bag. The result: an amazing laptop messenger bag that is very efficient, effective, and, above all, useful. The AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac is very useful. It comfortably holds a 16-inch MacBook and can even hold a camera kit with a few lenses after some rearranging. The fact that the interior of this bag can be rearranged, much like a camera bag, makes it stand out from the rest as well. At the end of the day, this is more than a messenger bag.

We were quite intrigued about giving this a go as many are used to the traditional backpack setup. To be honest, this is a great bag but after a while I did start to feel the weight of my laptop handing around my neck. Still, I loved how compact and lowkey the bag was whilst also providing a surprising amount of storage and organisation and I was also impressed with how comfortable the padded strap felt on one shoulder.

  • Customizable interior.
  • Sleek, ergonomic design.
  • Top-quality manufacturing.
  • Not as big as the backpack.
  • Like the backpack, straps can be awkward.

#11. Minaal Carry On 2.0 Backpack

Best travel backpack for europe.

best travel backpack for europe

  • Capacity: 9.8 liters
  • Dimensions: 16.5″ x 10.6″ x 4.7″
  • Weight: 1.76 lbs
  • Main Material: 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 13 inches

The Minaal Carry On has updated their original travel backpack to the 2.0, and it’s loaded with new features that improve its functionality, and make it one of the best laptop backpacks for travel! This backpack has the perfect dimensions carry-on any flight (22 x 14 x 9 inches), including those strict European budget airlines, which is one of the reasons why we chose it as one of the best backpacks for travel in Europe. The main compartment zips all the way open like a suitcase which I find some getting used to, but then found to be absolutely great. The larger side is perfect for packing your clothes, shoes, and other items.

All in, we loved this sleek and professional-looking bag, but one of the standout features they told us about what they particularly loved was the zippers. Not only are they super strong and smooth, but they’ve got built-in loops for locking them and keeping your laptop secure. The Minaal Carry-On is made from heavy-duty nylon, so the fabric does a solid job repelling water. The shoulder straps and removable hip straps pack away easily for transit, and the strap system and cushioned back panel foam allow for ultimate comfort.

  • Perfect carry on dimensions
  • Removable hip strap
  • Rain cover that packs into itself
  • Locking zippers
  • Suspended laptop sleeve helps protect laptop if you drop your bag

#12. GoRuck GR1

Most durable travel laptop backpack.

GR1 durable backpack

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Dimensions: 21.5″ x 13.5″ x 7.5″
  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Main Material: Waterproof sailcloth and ballistic

Another one of the best-organized backpacks, 26-litre GoRuck GR1 was designed and built for war zones and cities alike by a former Army Green Beret to be extremely durable and adaptable. For one, this is the most durable backpack on this list, designed for any weather and climate. The YKK zippers perform in sandstorms, and the 1000 Cordura material is rainproof.

This bag is also extremely comfortable. The shoulder straps are padded to handle heavy loads (like 400 pounds), and this backpack is designed to sit high so the weight doesn’t hang on your shoulders. Above all we loved what just how bloody hard wearing these beasts are. What I loved less was the price tag though.

  • Most durable backpack for laptops
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Strength tested
  • Can fit 17 inch laptop

#13. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

A simple and easy to use laptop backpack.

best carry on laptop bag fjallraven kanken

Fjallraven is one of the most recognizable backpack brands out there. Seriously, you can’t walk a mile in the city and not see someone sporting one of these boxy bags as they appeal to just about every type of person. The Fjallraven Kanken, one of the company’s flagship models, can also be used as a traveling laptop backpack. They are spacious enough to a hold a 15″ computer, include a nice dedicated laptop sleeve, and are pretty resistant to the elements. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, not to mention in-vogue, then buying all Fjallraven Kanken wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Fjallraven’s do have their limits though. I personally find their boxy design is a little awkward sometimes, although these bags are still comfortable to wear. If you need an everyday backpack, and not JUST a backpack for traveling, it’s hard to go wrong with the Fjallraven Kanken. It’s proven itself over and over and will probably keep on doing just that.

  • Rugged, water-resistant material
  • Very easy to use
  • Great for everyday use
  • Less protective padding

#14. The Roll Top Stubble & Co

Best hipster laptop backpack.

Stubble and Co Roll Top

We recently came across Stubble & Co and tried a bunch of their packs for ourselves – honestly we were seriously impressed by most of them. The Roll Top is a great hipster-style 20L bag perfect for carrying around your laptop as well as having heaps of room for your other accessories. What really makes it stand out for a day pack is that the laptop compartment is in a separate pocket on the back of the bag. This both makes it mega secure (especially for a roll top) and also saves the massive main compartment for everything else.

Internally the main compartment is one massive space with a selection of pockets and organisers attached to the other side of the laptop compartment/ back panel. This works well giving you some level of organisation whilst also being super roomy.

  • Capable of carrying laptops up to 16”
  • Roll top makes it expandable
  • Durable and weather resistant material
  • Could do with more internal organisation
  • Would like an internal zip as well as the roll top

#15 Tom Toc T73-x

Hottest new laptop pack.

The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack is the perfect travel companion for digital nomads. It offers a large capacity along with many compartments for organisation. The size is generally perfect for 5-7 days of light packing and has fast become one of my favourite bits of travel gear .

I chose this backpack as my travel bag for all my weekend getaway trips while backpacking through Southeast Asia. It comfortably fits my stuff for weekend getaways and helps me stay organised with the handy laptop sleeve.

I really love all the compartments included; they help me stay extremely organised. It has a large capacity for longer trips and It’s easy to find most of my belongings. The only downside is its build for a woman. I find the bag to be a bit big and bulky on me. But I love the large capacity for longer trips. I find it easy to find most of my belongings.

Tomtoc t73x backpack

  • Ace organisation capacity
  • Durable, high quality and stylish
  • Not large enough for long trips
  • Maybe kinda bulky

Best laptop backpack overall

Timbuk2 Authority Backpack

1. Timbuk2 Authority Backpack

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The backpacks from Timbuk2 have always been some of my favorites. Their overall design is fantastic, the internal pockets and organization is great and the build quality is incredible. These guys think of everything when designing a backpack.

The Authority laptop backpack deluxe has a ton of internal storage making this the perfect gear bag if you have quite a bit that you carry at times. It has dedicated pockets for your laptop and tablet and it also has great organization inside for other smaller gear as well.

Lastly, this bag is ridiculously comfortable, even when weighted down with gear, and it has a rain boot on top of rain repellant to help deter water from getting to your precious gear even if you happened to set your bag down in a puddle.

Best laptop backpack on a budget

AmazonBasics Laptop Backpack

2. AmazonBasics Laptop Backpack

One of the best laptop backpacks on a budget comes from AmazonBasics - the no-frills range of products from the world's online department store. This backpack boasts plenty of pockets for accessories and additional devices, and capable of taking laptops up to 17in. There's even space for a tablet, too. Often on deal, even at full price you're getting a good amount of storage for your money.

Best laptop bag on a budget

AmazonBasics Laptop Bag

3. AmazonBasics Laptop Bag

If you're looking for an affordable laptop bag, AmazonBasics has you covered. This is a no-nonsense, professional-style case with handle and shoulder strap. The bag comes in a range of sizes, fitting laptops up to 17.3in, and the padding here is more than ample for the daily commute. The design is pretty simple, lacking the premium look and feel we've seen on some of the best laptop bags - but for the price, it's hard to complain.

Best laptop backpack for professionals

Nomatic Navigator 15L

4. Nomatic Navigator (15L)

The Nomatic Navigator - known as the Gomatic Navigator outside the US - is hands down the best laptop backpack for business professionals. Sleek, gorgeously designed, it won't take up too much space, but holds plenty. The internal organization matched with phenomenal build quality and sleek look make this backpack really hard to beat. It comes in black, can expand from 15L to 21L with a simple unzip and all of the zippers are tamper resistant.

Best laptop sleeve

Harber London Slim Leather Folio Laptop Case No. 7

5. Harber London Slim Leather Folio Laptop Case No. 7

There are so many laptop sleeves and folios out there that only give you enough space for your laptop and nothing else. This one from Harber London, however, does the opposite. We've been using this for a while now as our go-to laptop soft case, and we've pretty much thrown in all our accessories and chargers in there as well, allowing us to carry all our essentials without being forced to carry another bag.

Of course, that's just one of the many things the Harber London Slim Leather Folio Laptop Case No. 7 does right. It comes in several different sizes so you can choose the right one for your laptop, has a wool felt lining inside that does a fantastic job of providing protection without making the folio bulky, and that leather finish means that you can take it on business trips and look stylish.

It's a little expensive for a folio, and we wish there are more pockets for organization. But it's still pretty hard to beat if that's what you want as a laptop bag.

Best laptop backpack for students

Herschel Pop Quiz backpack

6. Herschel Pop Quiz

7. Eastpack Out Of Office

With a simple, yet stylish, design, the Out Of Office laptop backpack is ideal for business users that makes carrying around your laptop comfortable, while also protecting your device from the rigours of daily life. One of the best features about this backpack is its 30 year warranty, which means you shouldn't have to worry about getting another laptop backpack for a long, long time.

Best laptop backpack for basics

Matein Travel Laptop Bag on a white background

8. Matein Travel Laptop Bag

If you believe millions of Amazon users can't be wrong, you could do worse than check out their best-selling laptop bag. It's easy to see why, given the huge 30 liter capacity, not to mention the fact that manufacturers Matein offer it in virtually every color available.

On the practical side there's a dedicated compartment that can hold anything from a 13" to a 15.6" laptop.

The adjustable shoulder straps and foam padding, also make this bag comfortable to wear. You even get a USB charging port on the outside with an internal cable, although the bag itself doesn't contain a battery.

The manufacturers claim the bag is made from a "durable polyester" that's also waterproof but some reviewers on Amazon pointed out this waterproofing seemingly doesn't apply to the straps. A couple of reviews also said the plastic buckles broke shortly after buying but these are heavily outweighed by thousands of positive experiences.

Best laptop backpack for capacity

Shrradoo Extra Large laptop backpack on a white background

9. Shrradoo Extra Large Travel Laptop Backpack

Another of the best-selling laptop bags on Amazon, the Shrradoo travel laptop back is an absolute beast with both 50L and 52L capacities, capable of holding up to a 17" laptop. As if this weren't enough there are also 20 independent pockets in addition to the 3 main multi-compartments.

The manufacturers describe the bag as being made of 'durable material' but don't say exactly what this is. They do, however, confirm that the lining is nylon which should make it water resistant, if not fully waterproof.

Like the Matein, the bag comes with an external USB port with built-in charging cable to power your devices. The shoulder straps are wide and made of a breathable mesh, which might make it more bearable if you decide to carry the bag with all the compartments and pockets loaded.

Amazon has thousands of reviews praising the bag for its capacity and portability but a small number said that the plastic handle also broke shortly after purchase.

Best laptop backpack for commuters

Timbuk2 Spire 2.0 on a white background

10. Timbuk2 Spire 2.0

The Timbuk2 Spire may have been made with MacBook owners in mind. The bag can easily hold a 15.6" laptop with a separate front panel and zip pocket for other gadgets like an iPad.

There's also a side pocket to hold a water bottle/umbrella. While we're talking rain, the top flap is good security against your electronics becoming damp due to rain.

It comes with a padded back panel and straps for 'extra comfort' though a few Amazon reviewers said that they did experience a little discomfort during use.

The higher price tag can be justified through Timbuk2's "lifetime" warranty which allows them to repair defects in the product. Be warned though, this is at the manufacturer's discretion.

Best slimline laptop bag

Lenovo T210 Carrying Case on a white background

11. Lenovo T210 Carrying Case

Despite the name, Lenovo 's T210 will actually fit most laptops up to 15.6". The case is extremely sleek and lightweight, making it perfect for business commuters who don't want to haul around large backpacks. It even comes with a convenient luggage strap.

The internal pockets are also useful for holding accessories like tablets, however some users have expressed disappointment at the limited padding. If you're taking a long trip and/or need to make sure that you're well protected you may want to choose a bag that's better cushioned. Still, you can do worse for less than $20.

Best laptop backpacks and bags: FAQs

How can i be sure the best laptop backpack or bag will be comfortable.

If you're planning on taking a laptop bag on long journeys, use a backpack style one with well-padded straps. If the back of your bag contains extra padding/ventilation, so much the better. Bags with a single shoulder strap aren't suitable for sustained travel.

How often should I replace my laptop bag?

Less expensive laptop bags can be a false economy if you need to replace them once every few months. Make sure to check with the manufacturer what guarantees they offer if the bag wears away too quickly. This is also a good time to check consumer rights in the country in which you're buying to see what protections are offered if the bag proves unfit for purpose.

What's the best material for a laptop backpack or bag?

If you plan to spend any time outside, try to choose a polyester, waterproof/water resistant material. If this isn't possible, see if you can find a canvas cover to fit over your chosen laptop bag to keep the contents dry.

Where should I buy the best laptop backpack or bag?

Most stores that sell laptops also sell accessories including laptop bags, backpacks, sleeves, and carrying cases. You can find some excellent deals by visiting manufacturer websites directly or by using popular online retailers like Amazon. The advantage of using third-party sites is you can read user reviews before you buy.

How to choose the best laptop backpack or bag for you

When choosing which laptop bag is best for you, there are several considerations. First, you'll need to select between a traditional laptop bag or carrying case, backpack, sleeve. If you're looking for protection around the home, a sleeve or case will suffice. If you're traveling, a bag or backpack for laptops is best - both for padding and protection, as well as straps to help you lug your portable around.

Check the dimensions of the bag and the devices you intend to put in it, so you know your laptop and accessories will fit. Ideally, your laptop should be snug but not constricted within the bag. You don't want it shifting around in its case while on the move, as this may lead to accidental damage. Many of the best laptop bags (and especially laptop backpacks) contain plenty of pockets for carrying around peripherals and accessories, including chargers, tablets, mouse, keyboard and so on.

If you're using your laptop outside the house, check out those laptop bags with added security features and an anti-theft design. These bags typically have hidden zips, preventing others from accessing the bag's contents without your knowledge. USB charging ports are also found on many of the best laptop backpacks and bags. These let you connect a portable power bank to charge devices while on the go.

How we test the best laptop backpacks and bags

There are a number of specifications we research when selecting the best laptop backpacks and best laptop bags. First and foremost, we look at the very best-selling products, given if there's a major defect in a product it would likely have already been discovered.

Beyond our own experience with laptop bags, sleeves, cases, and backpacks, we make sure to check user reviews. Like any discerning buyer, we prefer honest, verified reviews from reviewers with photos. We want to know what their experience has been of using their chosen bag day to day.

When it came to pricing, we tried to post a range for all budgets bearing in mind what we said earlier about the false economy of buying an inexpensive bag only to replace it a few months later. Where warranties are offered, we're sure to mention this too.

Where possible, we also tried to list the material from which the bag is made. This is important as it can effect how well the bag repels water. Certain materials also can pick up dust or dirt more easily.

We also check storage capacity of all bags and backpacks for laptops, though this can be misleading given the number of external/internal pockets. It's far better to check with the bag manufacturer if the dimensions of your particular laptop will fit. Where different color options are available, we mention this too.

19 Backpacks the Fashion Set Would Actually Wear

These stylish accessories will fit your laptop and everything else, too.

Fashion insiders love nothing more than being ahead of the curve. It’s practically in our job descriptions as we forecast trends from the runways and rework them to offer real-life solutions. Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo bag has transcended into one of 2024’s favorite luxe laptop bags , as has The Row’s Margaux tote bag. With a blend of functionality and style, both options offer an elevated feel to your work routine. But if you’re not a fan of wearing a traditional tote bag to the office, there’s one type of work bag that is at the precipice of becoming a full-blown trend: the humble laptop backpack.

Often overlooked, work-friendly backpacks have emerged online as a practical solution for editors, executives, and the street-style set. They’ve also appeared on the runways at Gucci, Coach, and Louis Vuitton. These backpacks, with their padded straps, extra storage, and hidden dedicated sleeves for your computer, are a hero item for women on the go. They offer a much-needed respite for those with aching shoulders from years of relying on leather tote bags .

Savannah Engel, the founder of New York-based boutique public relations agency SAVI , has deemed them necessary after needing an option that would keep her essentials safe while keeping her hands free to quickly answer emails. A jam-packed travel schedule and a series of injuries that left her on crutches for weeks at a time ruled out the need for a traditional tote, leaving her to rely on the classic styles of her youth—she has her eye on a newer edition of the Jansport she wore in middle school. “They're a perfect thing,” she tells Marie Claire .

Engel’s adoration of the retro piece falls in line with the resurgence of early-aughts and ‘90s fashion staples within the modern landscape. Capri pants, beloved by Bella Hadid , have risen to popularity once again alongside east-west bag silhouettes and jelly sandals . If what’s old is new again, it makes sense that sensibility would transition towards the staples in our wardrobes, too.

Backpacks have also been co-signed as a chic bag style by Marie Claire’s own Editor-in-Chief Nikki Ogunnaik e, who prefers spacious options from Dagne Dover and Longchamp made from durable canvas or lightweight nylon. Kenzie Welch , an Atlanta, Georgia-based stylist and content creator who has earned virality by styling working women on TikTok and Instagram, offers backpacks as a practical option for the people she works with—and they’ve become a popular inclusion in her styling sessions. “Most of my clients request chic and timeless work accessories, they don't want to compromise style for comfort,” she says. “I always tell them that functional doesn't have to mean unfashionable.”

The style is resonating with shoppers. Kimberly Bickle, the Site Merchandising Manager at luxury resale platform Fashionphile , says that she’s seen an increase in backpacks this summer, which she credits to the increase in travel and for “hands-free type bags are essential for everyone on the go.” Brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci are always top-sellers in the category, proving that the best backpacks don’t have to be made from techy materials like nylon to be sturdy enough to carry your work essentials.

Truly functional picks come at every price point and can be made in luxe fabrics like leather or suede. But because there are so many to choose from, we turned to our experts to parse through the options to find you the best ones. Ahead, find styling advice, tips on what to look for from Wech alongside Engel and Bickle sharing their favorite options on the market.

Marie Claire ’s Review: “This backpack fits my (ginormous) laptop via a side compartment—which, by the way, is great for when I need to access it without rifling through the rest of my bag," she explains. "It’s also got a bunch of zip pockets, slip pockets, two water bottle holders, and a strap for luggage. Apparently, this is great for the organized traveler, but it’s equally great for when I need to shove a bunch of things into it before I run out of the house” — Katherine J. Marie Claire 's Review: "I'm on my...sixth Longchamp Le Pliage, I think, having replaced mine every few years since I was in my early twenties (there's always a new color to try!). It's my backpack go-to (ask any of my friends or the approximately 29,129 photos of me in my camera roll with my Le Pliage strapped reassuringly to my back). I once went to three states and two weddings in a single weekend with nothing but my Le Pliage, and yes, it was a squeeze, but it's also a testament to how much this bag can hold. Laptop-wise, it'll hold only a small laptop—a 13-inch or less—but it'll also hold a book, a water bottle, a planner, and anything else you decide to toss in. It's magic like that." — Jenny Hollander , Site Director

What To Look For in The Best Laptop Backpack

There are plenty of laptop backpacks, and it's Marie Claire's job to curate the cream of the crop. To that end, there are a few key factors that all of the best laptop backpacks on this list share:

  • The Number of Pockets: Are you looking for a laptop backpack because you're tired of rummaging through your tote to find your things? All the laptop backpacks listed here have multiple interior and exterior pockets, most of them have a dedicated laptop sleeve, and some are available in different sizes to accommodate various laptops and other tech. As Shah suggests, "When searching for a laptop backpack, organization is crucial."
  • Versatility: Looking for a versatile laptop backpack that seamlessly transitions from work to social events? Our laptop backpacks come in neutral colors and feature a sleek design, ensuring that they complement your personal style. Some of our backpacks are convertible and can also be worn as a tote bag or crossbody bag , while others can be folded up and carried as a carry-on suitcase for convenient travel.
  • Comfort: Chances are, you'll be carrying this backpack for hours on end. The laptop backpacks on this list have thick, sturdy shoulder straps and are designed with weight distribution in mind, so your back and shoulders won't ache. Some also have padding along the backside of the actual bag and built into the straps to keep you comfortable even as your belongings move around.
  • High-Quality Materials: We want you to love the laptop backpack you choose for years to come. With that in mind, Marie Claire has selected only backpacks made from durable materials such as leather, neoprene, canvas, or nylon.

How to Style Laptop Backpacks

Even Hollywood's brightest style stars have tried—and succeeded—in making a backpack a stylish accessory moment. Supermodel Irina Shayk teamed a double-denim look with a black backpack, proving that the schoolgirl staple can accompany just about any ensemble. Carrie Mulligan and Jane Fonda relied on backpacks as on-the-go accessories, dressed up with Fonda's olive green pantsuit and relaxed with Mulligan's straight-leg jeans and white sneakers .

Take Me To: What To Look For in a Laptop Bag | More Bags We Love

Best Work Laptop Bag: Troubadour Apex 3.0

Image may contain: Bag, and Backpack

Apex 3.0 Backpack

Material: Polyester, vegan leather | Size: 12.5” x 19” x 6” | Capacity: 25L | Laptop Size: 17”

Available in three stylish colors—classic black, navy blue, and a handsome forest green—the newest iteration of Troubadour’s Apex bag impressed us with its clean silhouette, neat internal organization, and comfort. (It’s got padding in all the right places.) In our testing, the padded straps and weight balance kept us comfortable even on long commutes. This backpack has a 25L capacity suitable for everyday use and overnights, but it excels as a work bag. It keeps a relatively slim profile even when stuffed with a MacBook, umbrella, water bottle, and change of clothes.

We did encounter a couple of bugs during our testing. The teeth of the zipper came apart early in our evaluation, exposing the interior of the bag. We were able to easily fix this, but it caught us by surprise, especially for a bag at this price point. In addition, the placement of the water bottle holder can make it tricky to reach the zippers. These are minor quibbles, and by and large we're quite impressed with the bag's overall design and pocket layouts (even the padded laptop compartment has internal organization). Finally, for folks who aren’t about that MacBook life, this is the rare laptop bag that can accommodate a 17-inch Windows laptop.

Best Commuter Laptop Backpack: Topo Designs Rover Pack Tech

Image may contain: Bag, and Backpack

Topo Designs

Rover Pack Tech

Material: 100% recycled nylon | Size: 11” x 17” x 5” | Capacity: 24.3L | Laptop Size: 15” Topo Designs bags are popular picks among college students thanks to their signature color blocking. While you have to live without the fun colorways with the brand’s special-edition tech pack, we can’t resist an all-black bag like this ( also available: navy, tan, charcoal, and forest green). As the tech edition of the popular Rover Pack, this bag adds a heavily padded external laptop compartment. Otherwise, it carries over the best features from the Rover, including daisy-chain webbing, durable materials and hardware, and water bottle pockets. The large internal pocket even has space for a second laptop or tablet if your work demands multiple pieces of tech.

Best Budget Laptop Backpack: The North Face Jester Backpack

Image may contain: Bag, and Backpack

The North Face

Jester Backpack

Material: Polyester | Size: 11'' x 18.13” x 8.25'' | Capacity: 28L | Laptop Size: 16”

College students and budget shoppers will appreciate this under-$100 backpack from the North Face. It's even got an endorsement from the American Chiropractic Association, according the brand. This pack has a padded back, a lumbar support panel, and a sternum strap to support your spine. On the front, bungee cords make it easy to clip on carabiners or other attachments, while dual water bottle pockets let you hydrate to the max.

Of course, since it’s not the most attractive bag, what’s on the inside really counts. This bag has quick-access pockets, a tablet or phone holder (in addition to the laptop compartment), and a place to secure your keys. Finally, the bag stands up on its own, so it’s no pushover despite the humble price tag.

Best Travel Laptop Backpack: Evergoods Civic Travel Bag 35L

Image may contain: Bag, and Backpack

Civic Travel Bag 35L

Material: Nylon | Size: 14” x 20.5” x 8.75” | Capacity: 35L | Laptop Size: 17”

In the exact center of the Venn diagram between attractive laptop bags and functional carry-ons, you’ll find this Evergoods pack. This carry-on bag fits under airline seats, and it has a tightly woven, water-resistant nylon shell for more adventurous trips. It comes in two different sizes, but the 35-liter version should cater to most long-haul travel scenarios. Evergoods outfitted this travel bag with curved straps that naturally fit your shoulders, while an optional ergonomic waist strap distributes weight for long-haul journeys. We also love the combination of a luggage passthrough and a side handle, which lets you breeze through the terminal and then squeeze through the aisle for boarding.

The 25 Best Sex Toys for Absolutely Everyone

GQ Associate Commerce Director Michael Nolledo took the 26-liter version on a trip to Asia in addition to a rolling suitcase and calls the backpack “an organized traveler’s dream bag.” He notes that the pocket layouts are intuitive for travel, and the clamshell opening makes it easy to load things in and out (he also recommends Evergoods’ smartly designed packing cubes ). Everything about the backpack, from the fabric all the way down to the zipper pulls, is carefully considered, according to Nolledo.

Best Travel Laptop Duffle Bag: Away The Everywhere Bag

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, Briefcase, and Tote Bag

The Everywhere Bag

Material: Nylon, leather | Size: 16.3" x 10.2" x 7.3" | Capacity: 20L | Laptop Size: 15”

What this weekender bag lacks in size, it makes up in style (20L is on the small side for a travel bag). We love the clean silhouette, minimalist aesthetic, and tote bag-like handles. If you already have Away luggage, you can match the color of the bag to your suitcase. Even if you prefer Rimowa to Away, it will still stay securely on top of your suitcase thanks to the luggage passthrough. The popular Away duffel has just enough room to fit a change of clothes, water bottle, and 15-inch laptop. And if you’re a laptop warrior with carpal tunnel battle scars, you can switch to the padded shoulder strap and give your hands a break. You might not think of a duffel as an everyday bag, but thanks to the compact size, it’s also a handsome alternative to a boring office backpack.

Best Laptop Tote Bag: Bellroy Tokyo Tote

Image may contain: Bag, Tote Bag, Accessories, and Handbag

Material: Nylon, leather | Size: 14” x 18.5” x 5” | Capacity: 15L | Laptop Size: 13”

If 2023 was The Year of the Tote Bag, what makes 2024? Whatever you call it, we aren’t ready to give up our totes yet. Bellroy’s affordable carryall is a functional and compact laptop bag that’s just the right size for a MacBook Air. Best known for its slim men’s wallets , the Australian brand has a reputation for clean, space-saving designs with thoughtful details—and that’s exactly how we’d describe the Tokyo Tote. The padded handle straps are long enough (and comfortable enough) to wear over your shoulder on long walks. The entire bag also zips up for rainy days, while interior and exterior pockets keep your phone, water bottle, MacBook, journal, charging cables, and extra clothes organized.

Think of this as an unpretentious bag for secretly pretentious people. And for shoppers who believe a laptop bag shouldn’t cost as much as the laptop itself, it’s a smart alternative to overpriced fashion totes.

Best Laptop Briefcase: Filson Tin Cloth Compact Briefcase

Image may contain: Canvas, Bag, Accessories, Handbag, and Tote Bag

Tin Cloth Compact Briefcase

Material: Waxed cotton | Size: 11.5” x 15” x 2.75” | Capacity: 9L | Laptop Size: 15”

While Filson's briefcase needs no introduction, it also has zero padding. This Tin Cloth briefcase, however, is expressly designed with a laptop compartment. This handsome bag will keep you light on your feet, and you can carry it over the shoulder or by hand. It also works well as a companion to your luggage while traveling. Check or stow your suitcase and keep this waxed cotton briefcase on hand for your work laptop.

With a water-resistant finish, this bag will keep your gear organized and dry. And if you do have a country estate for your leisure time, Filson bags like this are still tough enough to handle wet and muddy conditions.

Best Leather Laptop Backpack: Coach Gotham Backpack

Image may contain: Bag, Backpack, Accessories, and Handbag

Gotham Backpack

Material: Leather | Size: 11.5” x 19.25” x 6.75” | Capacity: 24.5L | Laptop Size: 15”

A handsome black leather backpack will always be a smart option as your work bag. Don’t overthink it. And Coach’s Gotham bag has a streamlined design and high-quality pebbled leather. While it won’t accommodate oversized 17 inchers, it can handle your MacBook with no problem. The bag has two zippered compartments on the outside and one inside, plus a few more internal pockets for easy organization. Best of all, the back of the bag is made from a breathable mesh, so you won’t show up to the office with back sweat darkening your favorite work shirts.

Best Slim Laptop Backpack: Aer Slim Pack

Material: Nylon | Size: 16” x 11.5” x 3.5” | Capacity: 8.5L | Laptop Size: 15”

We love AER’s minimalist EDC bags, and not just because of the all-black aesthetic. If you're looking for a compact laptop carry that won't weigh you down, take a look at the brand's Slim Pack. As the name suggests, this 8.5-liter backpack is slim and slender, designed to protect a laptop up to 15 inches with enough space for your charger, books, headphones, and whatever else you carry. The water-resistant coated 840D nylon fabric (the same found on Aer's larger-sized Tech Pack 3 —also recommended) is easy to clean and gives the bag a slick texture.

ReNew Transit Backpack

What to look for in a laptop bag.

Laptops are non-optional for college students and most office workers, so unless you want to carry that laptop commando-style, you’ll need a bag to keep it safe on your daily travels. For a lot of folks, that means a tech-friendly backpack, but that’s not your only choice.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen more guys moving away from laptop backpacks, so don’t limit yourself when choosing a laptop bag. We’ve personally tested a few of these bags, and we’re in the process of testing more. When picking our favorites—backpacks, tote bags, duffels, and briefcases—here’s how we narrowed the field:

  • Padded laptop compartments: We ruled out many great bags because they lacked a suspended padded laptop sleeve. We also chose bags that could fit a variety of laptop sizes.
  • Materials: You’ll find a lot of durable performance fabrics like nylon and polyester here, but also leather and cotton. Bags with DWR finishes or weather- and water-resistant materials earned extra points in our evaluation.
  • Style: Good style is its own reward. Before it earned a spot on our list, our editors reviewed each bag to ensure it met our aesthetic standards and performance requirements.
  • Organization: We looked for bags with pockets inside and out so that you don’t have to dig around your bag every time you need something. (Purses—we’re looking at you.) We also favored bags with additional features such as durable hardware, luggage pass-throughs, and water bottle holders.

Behind the Scenes

Why trust people, what is people tested.

People / Conor Ralph

Whether for personal or business use, laptops are deeply ingrained into our daily routines and it’s difficult to leave them behind when traveling. With a laptop backpack, you can take your work or entertainment with you. Even celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift, and Emma Stone have been seen toting stylish and functional backpacks around because they act as easy storage, transport, and fashion accessories.

“When looking for the ideal travel laptop bag, I seek out style and overall functionality,” celebrity fashion stylist and consultant Chelsea Volpe tells PEOPLE. She also looks for timeless designs rather than ones that will come and go with the season. Other factors to consider are durability, storage design (”Pockets are your friend,” Volpe says), and tech features such as a USB charging port.

We tested 53 of the best laptop backpacks for travel in the lab and at home for two months, and compared qualities like the capacity of the bags, the design, and the durability of materials — a quality we tested by dropping backpacks with laptops in them. After literally carrying this test on their backs, we found a group of bags that are worthy of being your and your laptop’s next travel companion.

These are the best laptop backpacks for travel that PEOPLE Tested.

Best Overall

Solo re:define backpack.

Sustainable materials held up to durability tests and actual traveling

Has cushioned straps and distributes weight evenly to reduce pressure on your shoulders

Extremely spacious despite small size

Shoulder straps are narrow at the top

Though the Solo Re:Define Backpack looks small and unassuming, its capacity seems nearly limitless. During our lab tests, we were able to fit a laptop, a pair of shoes, toiletries, a shirt, a pullover, and a pair of joggers, as well as a book, wallet, keys, and lotion. Even packed to the brink, the backpack weighed maybe 15 pounds — not a huge burden to tote around an airport. The storage options varied between a protected laptop sleeve, small organization pockets, and water bottle pockets; in addition to a battery pack pocket for USB storage and on-the-go charging capabilities.

The materials lend themselves to a durable and low-maintenance design. Made with recycled polyester sourced from plastic water bottles, this backpack is water-resistant and can be cleaned with a gentle wipe-down. It also held up to wear and tear, with no marks or visible damage after our durability test.

The cushioned straps are comfortable on your shoulders, though they’re close together up top so it could be uncomfortable for some folks if it rubs your neck. That said, we think it’s one of the most comfortable and well-fitting backpacks of the day. When you consider the storage, durability, high-quality materials, comfort, and low price, this bag is a must for any regular traveler.

How it's held up:

When we tried this backpack in the real world, we were continually impressed with its capacity. It’s a bit of a Mary Poppins bag because it almost feels bottomless. The zippers had smooth closures, and the padded straps made the backpack comfortable to wear throughout the day when traveling. We agree with the lab’s assessment of the straps’ narrowness at the top. That said, this lightweight backpack distributes its weight and you feel the impact more on your hips than your shoulders. The sustainable materials are easy to wipe down after a trip — even after traveling across the country, there wasn’t a single scuff or scratch on this backpack.

Best Overall, Cheaper

Himawari laptop backpack with usb charging port.

Lightweight and comfortable to carry

Lots of protective cushioning on laptop and tablet pockets

Available in more than 20 colors

Most inner compartments don’t have closures so belongings aren’t fully secure

Outer water bottle pockets are too small for large bottles

Himari’s laptop backpack is an excellent value for travelers, students, and commuters. It includes well-padded laptop and tablet sleeves, adjustable straps, two outer side pockets for water bottles, a USB charging port with a built-in cable, and more — all for under $40.

We put this backpack to the test over a four-day trip that included a flight to Florida, as well as during a work commute in New York. We were impressed with its 17-liter capacity — it was flexible and roomy, though still structured enough to stand up on its own. (Case in point: It fit a 15-inch laptop and charging cable, a Kindle, a book, a thick cardigan, a wallet, and keys and still felt spacious.)

It was also comfortable to carry, lightweight even when full, and it distributed weight evenly. The padded straps are also adjustable and can work for people with a wide range of heights and builds. We felt it was durable, too; its waterproof canvas material kept its contents completely dry, both in the Miami humidity and during a light rain storm in New York.

Though we loved the number of pockets in this backpack, we wished its smaller inner compartments — perfect for keys or earbuds — had closures. Our things occasionally slipped out in transit. Also, its two outer side pockets don’t have much give, which makes the bag look more streamlined but makes it difficult to fit larger water bottles inside.

Laptop Size: 15 inches | Colors: 24 | Material: Waterproof canvas | Extra Features: Dedicated laptop pocket and tablet sleeve , large zippered front pocket, 2 inner small pockets, 2 side pockets, padded back panel, adjustable shoulder straps, USB port with built-in charging cable (power bank not included)

Best Budget

Bagsmart bonchemin laptop backpack.

So many pockets and compartments to fit everything you need on a trip

Most inexpensive bag on our list, just under $50

Has a charger port so you don’t have to worry about your phone battery dying mid-journey

Laptop compartment has zippers that must be clipped or the weight of the laptop will cause the bag to open

This favorite from Bagsmart comes with all the qualities you want in a laptop backpack, but with a price tag that will make you raise your eyebrows — it’s that good. We love the large compartment space (which can fit multiple laptops), soft material, stylish design, and comfort. Our shoulders felt light after taking off the bag, despite having carried it around for a bit.

It also survived — nay, thrived — during our durability tests. The test laptop survived the drop in this bag and came out with no scuffs and no marks. We initially judged the bag based on its basic appearance but were so wrong. We were delighted by the extra features like the charger port, capacity, and quilted cloth design. For the price, this bag is so worth it.

If you're looking for a bag that doubles as an everyday work backpack and a travel one, we took this backpack on a nine-day trip to Ireland, and continue to use it as an everyday work bag. One thing we learned is that you have to fasten the zippers with the clips on the laptop sleeve or the weight of the laptop can open the bag (unfortunately, we learned this while riding the subway). However, there are also so many compartments and pockets, that you can fit everything you need, and more.

Best Carry-On

Bagsmart blast quick access carry-on travel backpack.

Spacious storage capacity

Several useful pockets, including a dedicated shoe compartment

Laptop pocket cumbersome to open

Chest buckle feels awkward and uncomfortable

This is the ideal carry-on bag for a short trip or an all-day expedition. Inside, it’s incredibly spacious, though we also found it easy to organize our things thanks to six zippered outer pockets, including a dedicated compartment for shoes — a game changer for gym-goers or those on a weekend trip.

This backpack was comfortable to carry during a full-day excursion in New York City, and its nylon material felt lightweight but durable. Though we appreciated that its adjustable shoulder straps were versatile enough to fit a variety of heights and body types, we could have done without its chest buckle, which felt restrictive and in the way.

While we love the laptop sleeve, the bulky size of the bag makes it a better carry-on travel option rather than a daily laptop bag (for, say, a quick jaunt to a café to work). When full, it can carry a laptop, extra clothes, chargers, notebooks, boots, a water bottle, and toiletries.

Laptop Size: 15.6 inches | Colors: 3 | Material: Nylon | Extra Features: 6 external pockets, shoe compartment, inner/outer compression straps, 4 carrying modes (top/side handles, back luggage strap), water-resistant, machine-washable

Best Investment

Lo & sons rowledge.

Stylish design comes in two sizes

Proved very protective of our laptops over two months of testing

Water-resistant and durable material

Doesn’t fit 15-inch laptops

If fashion is your priority, this stylish Lo & Sons bag is undoubtedly eye-catching. We were in awe of the design because it's very chic with the brand logo, zipper tassels, and leather design. But it’s not just a good-looking backpack, it’s functional too. It looks small on the outside, but once you open it, there is more than enough space for a sweater and any tech you have; there’s even a zippered section for a water bottle. While the bag is only available in black, there are several interior colors available as well as various hardware options.

While it comes in two sizes, neither fits a laptop larger than 13 inches. The premium nylon material is water-resistant and quite durable, and because it’s padded all the way through, the laptop survived the fall test. We noticed the material was a little stiff at first, but it became more flexible and adjustable as time went on. You can also use it as a backpack or a tote, thanks to the sleek top handles.

How it's held up: For two months, we’ve used this bag for our office commute and as a travel bag for airport trips. It’s proved to be sleek, protective, and comfortable throughout long days of wear. It also thoroughly protected our laptop and provided lots of storage and organization options.

Laptop Size: 13 inches | Colors: Black with 7 hardware/interior options | Material: Premium nylon | Extra Features: Convertible design, luggage trolley sleeve

Best Weatherproof

Peak design everyday backpack.

Many hidden compartments; room for pens, a camera, a laptop, and more

Adjustable and padded straps, which makes the bag super comfortable to wear

Made with a weatherproof poly-coated nylon material

One of the most expensive backpacks on our list

Fastener wasn’t as secure as we would have liked

For certain adventures, your travel backpack might face inclement weather, and if you have your laptop in tow, you’ll want a bag that keeps it protected. This backpack is thoughtfully designed with plenty of features for photographers or people traveling with technology gadgets. It scored well in terms of capacity because it has a spacious interior, two removable dividers for separating items that could be fragile, and an expandable magnetic clip.

Despite the size, it also proved quite comfortable. It’s so lightweight, and combined with cushioned and adjustable straps and durable and weatherproof poly-coated nylon material, this bag is highly durable and will keep your laptop safe — much like it did when we dropped the backpack and the laptop stayed intact. Though expensive, the price is completely fair for the high-quality design and materials.

How it's held up: We used this primarily as a work bag, and were impressed with the storage capacity and organizational compartments. The chest strap fits nicely, and the laptop sleeve has held up in protecting our computer. We do wish the backpack fastener was a little more secure.

Laptop Size: 16 inches | Colors: Black, midnight blue, charcoal, ash | Material: 400D double poly-coated nylon canvas shell | Extra Features: Trolley sleeve, adjustable straps

Best Faux Leather

Monos metro backpack.

Even when you fill it to capacity, it’s comfortable to carry around

Deep pockets have more than enough room for anything you need to carry

Nylon and faux leather options with this backpack model

Small bag attached on the front falls off occasionally

No small compartments which makes it harder to find things in the bottom

No water bottle holder on the exterior of the bag

This is a gorgeous bag that’s as eye-catching as it is effective. The design is perfect for everything from commuting to air travel. Even without the detachable bag on the front, there was a good amount of room for storage. The backpack comes in durable nylon or vegan leather options, and both materials are water- and scratch-resistant. The only initial hiccup with the design was the lack of a water bottle holder on the exterior of the bag.

We loved the look of the vegan leather and though it feels slightly stiff, the bag is comfortable to wear. This bag kept the dummy laptop secure during the drop test — we were impressed with its durability. We think it’s a well-made backpack with thoughtful features like padded handles, plenty of pockets, and a detachable front pouch for staying extra organized.

While home testing for two months, we noticed that the front attached bag falls off occasionally which isn’t ideal, and the deep pockets can be a recipe for losing items at the bottom of your bag. While we love the capacity of this backpack, it might be better suited for travel with larger items than as a commuter bag carrying smaller pens, notebooks, etc.

Laptop Size: 15 inches | Colors: Saddle tan, mahogany, ivory (plus four colors for nylon material) | Material: Ultra-microfiber vegan leather | Extra Features: Water- and scratch-resistant materials, trolley sleeve, top handle

Best Durable

Troubadour orbis 1-pocket backpack.

Dropped seven times without any scuffs or damage marks

Strap padding is highly cushioned making for comfortable wear

Large number of pockets for extensive organization options

Main compartment opening tapers down slightly making it harder to get into

Back padding isn’t super breathable

When you travel with a backpack, it has to endure quite a bit of wear and tear. This one-pocket backpack from Troubadour was the most durable among those we tested. Its canvas-like material is actually a recycled polyester, and though lightweight it can sustain a good beating. After dropping it seven times during our tests, it didn’t have any scuff marks or damage and still looked brand new. The amount of padding on the straps creates a super cushioned feel, though it wasn’t super breathable and our tester got a little sweaty when carrying it around.

In addition, the capacity was impressive — we could fit a surprising amount of clothing and cosmetics. The large number of pockets allows for extensive organization, and the water bottle pockets can fit up to a 24-ounce bottle. The design is sleek, and the main compartment is spacious, but we did notice the top of the compartment tapers down slightly, so the opening is a little hard to get into. Though slightly inconvenient, the slides’ fabric expands to help you access the compartment better. Overall, this is a well-designed, durable, and comfortable backpack to invest in.

We found this bag to be spacious, durable, and comfortable for regular commutes. It has a series of pockets and compartments for organization, as well as a protected laptop pocket, which is easy to access and unzip. The main pocket issue also existed in our real-world testing; basically, it’s hard to get into this backpack on the go, because the zipper lives under a tapered flat. So we just had to stop and take the backpack off to get into it. However, the padding was extremely thick and comfortable to wear throughout the day. It has remained durable without any scuff marks during our real-world testing, and frankly, given the amount of padding, we would feel confident kicking the bag even with our laptop in it.

Laptop Size: 16 inches | Colors: Black | Material: Recycled polyester | Extra Features: Smooth zippers, clever pockets, waterproof fabric, 5-year guarantee

Best Design

Béis the backpack.

Lots of storage compartments and organization options

Water-resistant lining to protect your laptop from rain or spills

Comfortable to wear (when not overpacked)

No padded bottom in laptop sleeve

Reusable water bottle doesn’t fit in the drink pouch

Feels heavy to carry when filled to the brim

As a standout piece in Shay Mitchell’s luggage brand , Beis, this backpack offers extensive storage, a chic design, durability, and comfort when wearing it. This bag was definitely designed by travel pros because there's a ton of capacity — the bag wasn't even close to half full with the items we packed in. The capacity includes water bottle holders, a laptop sleeve, zippered compartments, and more. When this backpack appears on a list of Cyber Monday luggage deals, definitely snap it up.

Though we were nervous about the laptop sleeve not having a padded bottom, the backpack kept the laptop protected during our drop test. We were, though, impressed with the comfort. The straps are nicely padded and adjustable, and a good width apart to feel comfortable around our frame. The overall features of this bag make it very convenient and portable: Its comfortable and durable design, expansive capacity, water-resistant lining, and protective laptop storage make it a fabulous laptop backpack for travel.

We used this bag on two international trips and it fits an astonishing amount. It fully opens, which makes it easy to see where everything is inside (no digging around!). We noticed that a reusable water bottle did not fit super easily in the water pouch, which was disappointing. It also felt super heavy when full, but we do love the organization options.

Laptop Size: 15 inches | Colors: Black, beige | Material: Cotton, PVC, polyester | Extra Features: Trolley sleeve, water bottle pockets

Best Capacity

Lovevook laptop bag.

Spacious and includes large, useful pockets

Comfortable to carry

Great value

Lacks padding in laptop sleeve and back panel

Strap adjustment mechanism felt flimsy

When we tested this backpack during work commutes, we were shocked by its spaciousness. In its main compartment, we stored a laptop, a notebook, two medium-sized makeup pouches, a pair of large over-ear headphones, and a packed lunch. Plus, the front pocket fit AirPods, tissues, and several other smaller items, and the side pockets were secure but stretchy enough to fit a large Stanley cup. (We also utilized the USB pocket with a built-in charging cable for on-the-go power.)

The bag had several smaller hidden pockets, which helped us organize smaller personal items; it felt like there was no wasted space. However, the laptop sleeve itself had what we’d consider a minimal amount of padding compared to other options, though there were enough protective layers to keep it safe during low-impact trips.

Though its adjustable shoulder straps were thick and plush, the adjustment sliders felt a bit flimsy — we noticed that they often moved on their own during transit, which made the bag looser and more uncomfortable to carry. As a result, we noted some strain on our shoulders and neck after commuting with a full bag; for this reason, we believe it’s a better fit for smaller loads or shorter distances.

Laptop Size: 15.6 inches | Colors: 18 | Material: Nylon | Extra Features: 2 front compartments, luggage strap on back, USB charging port, theft-proof back pocket, 2 side pockets

Best for Organization

Timbuk2 authority laptop backpack deluxe.

Tons of capacity for storage, including pockets for organization

Water-resistant material

Adjustable padded straps

No cons detected during testing

This deluxe backpack from Timbuk2 is an organizer’s dream. With pockets and hidden compartments inside, outside, and on the sides of this backpack, there are countless ways to organize this bag. The main compartment fits all of the packing items without issue, and it’s super sleek and thin — plus there are tons of pockets for staying super organized.

We loved the lightweight feel of this backpack, as well as the padding and cushioned feel of the adjustable straps when wearing it. We felt like we could wear this all day and not feel any pinching or immediate pain. It also passed our durability test with flying colors, as the laptop sleeve is super padded, and the bottom of the bag has a waterproof material, so nothing seeps through. While it might not be able to hold all of your essentials for a longer trip, we feel like this bag would last a really long time with daily use.

Laptop Size: 17 inches | Colors: Black deluxe, eco black deluxe, nightfall, static, olivine, titanium | Material: 100 percent recycled nylon | Extra Features: Trolley sleeve, air-mesh back panel, compression straps

Best Padded

Swissgear 1900 scansmart laptop backpack.

Extensive organization and capacity options for every kind of usage: commuting, travel, running errands, and more

Scansmart tech for faster airport travel

Gets a little heavy to carry around if you overfill it

Swissgear offers a highly durable, comfortable, and spacious backpack to keep your laptop protected during travel. The polyester material is washable and waterproof, the large zippers are all metal, and the material is thick and seemingly well-constructed, so we can see this bag lasting for years while being used daily. We also appreciated the extra padding on the straps and back panel, which we would describe as exceptionally soft.

The capacity proved spacious and allowed for organization with various pockets and sections to keep your things in place. With a plethora of pockets and compartments, this bag makes sure everything has its rightful spot. It also has Scansmart technology to speed up the TSA process. We loved the overall look and design, and while some might find it a bit utilitarian in appearance, considering the price and all the features, we’d say it’s a steal.

How it's held up: Upon receiving this backpack, we threw our old backpack away (literally at the office) and have never looked back. We carry it around two to three days per week, and it works beautifully for shopping (and loading up on gifts and goodies), commuting, going to the gym, and traveling. We’re huge fans of the compartment options and organization capabilities, though it does get a little heavy to carry around when overfilled.

Laptop Size: 17 inches | Colors: Blue, gray, heather gray, black, and more | Material: 1200 D polyester | Extra Features: Scansmart tech to speed up TSA process, adjustable straps, padded airflow back panel

Bee & Kin The Midi Nomad Backpack

Has a front pocket with wireless charging capabilities for your phone

Didn’t scuff or scratch when dropped for durability test

It sits a little low on your back even when the straps are on the tightest setting

Could be too expensive for some budgets

Despite being a smaller backpack, this bag fits everything we wedged into it during testing. In addition to the spacious main compartment, there’s also a front pocket designed as a wireless charger (though the actual charger is sold separately) and a protective laptop sleeve. It felt lightweight, and while there wasn’t padding, it didn’t really need any since it’s so small.

While walking around, the bag was comfortable on our shoulders, even when fully packed. It sat a little low on our backs but that’s not a dealbreaker. It passed the durability test without any marks of scuffs, but since it’s a genuine leather bag, we would advise you to be mindful of its care. Given the material, we understand the higher price tag, but it could be too expensive for some budgets. Overall, we think this is a sleek, quality backpack that would be a fun accessory to take your work on the go.

How it's held up: When we tried this backpack outside the lab, it fit everything we needed to carry around. We really liked the front pocket for storing quick-grab items like your keys, wallet, and phone. And the fact that it can charge your phone while you’re out doesn’t hurt. We like the look of the buckle straps but in terms of comfort, the backpack sits a little low on our backs. We weren’t particularly careful with the bag, and it still hasn’t scratched. The design and small size would make this an ideal work bag for commuters.

Laptop Size: 13 inches | Colors: Green, red, black, tan | Material: 100% genuine Italian leather | Extra Features: Charging pocket, outer pocket, water bottle pocket

Best with Charger

Vohler laptop backpack.

Built-in USB charger which makes traveling so much more convenient

Lots of organization compartments and pockets to store different sized items

Luggage strap makes for easy transport as you can throw it on top of your suitcase and wheel it around

Only comes in dark colors

The fabric inside the liner frayed and ripped in the two months of use

If you want a bag that provides plenty of storage when you travel and lets you charge your devices on the go, this Vohler pick is a good choice. We love the organization compartments, USB charger, durable material, and stylish design. We were able to sort everything within the multiple pockets, and there are extra hidden pockets for more valuable items.

We appreciated the compact size, which can fit wonderfully under a seat and in the overhead compartment on a plane. This contemporary bag offers a built-in USB charger, high quality, and durable fabric that’s water-resistant. The bottom padding helped during our impact test, keeping the laptop intact when dropped via the backpack. We loved this well-designed bag, and thinks it will last for many trips to come.

How it’s held up: We’ve used this backpack for two months for work and travel. Though one of the pocket liners frayed and ripped, the majority of the bag has shown incredible durability — we’ve thrown it under plane seats, overpacked its capacity, and taken it on many road trips. We love the luggage strap and how easy it is to throw on top of our suitcase to wheel around the airport. It has a ton of pockets and compartments for storage, and we’ve utilized the USP charger many times which adds a layer of convenience to traveling.

Laptop Size: 15.6 inches, 17 inches | Colors: Black, blue, grey, rose red | Material: Water-resistant polyester | Extra Features: Built-in USB charger

Best for Business Travel

Samsonite just right standard backpack.

Plenty of compartments and organizer pockets for storing various items

Sleek, sophisticated design that received lots of compliments when we used it on trips

Not a huge capacity

If you’re popping out for a quick business trip, this backpack is the perfect work bag for brief commutes. It easily fits a laptop and iPad and could definitely fit another computer. In fact, everything from the test fit in the bag, but it’s definitely more of a commuter bag or a second carry-on, rather than a main bag for a trip. It’s a highly cushioned bag, with plenty of support when wearing it, as well as padding around your laptop for extra protection.

Other cool features include the USB cord, all of the various organization pockets and compartments, and a trolley strap to attach it to luggage when you don’t feel like carrying it. Our one lament was that there was only one water bottle pocket, and it was not very large. The overall design is super lightweight, and we think the outer and inner materials both seem high quality and durable — plus, nothing was damaged during the drop test. It’s a very sleek bag that doesn’t have a huge capacity, but it looks professional and is extremely organized. It would be a great bag for work commutes or as a personal item on a plane.

How it's held up: Over two months, we learned this bag has just enough pockets to stay organized without allowing you to overpack and cause bulkiness. It goes with everything, and we always get compliments on it when out and about. It doesn’t fit too much, which we liked because it prevents us from overpacking, but this could be inconvenient for those who need more spacious bags.

Laptop Size: 15.6 inches | Colors: Black | Material: Nylon | Extra Features: Adjustable straps, included cable for charging devices, trolley sleeve

Best for Commuters

Aer city pack.

High-quality materials and design

Sturdy laptop compartment

Has ample pockets elevated details

Slightly heavy

May not be as comfortable for petit users

Aer’s City Pack is aptly named — in our testing, we noted it was the ideal bag for commuters. We tested this 14-liter-capacity bag on work commutes in New York; it comfortably fit a 14-inch Macbook Pro laptop, a sketchbook, a pencil case, a 32-ounce Swell water bottle, a pair of foldable over-ear headphones, a battery charger, a travel-sized sunblock, and keys.

What made this bag stand out was the attention to detail in its design and special features, including organized compartments (shoutout to the tiny pocket specifically for bag trackers like AirTags !), a strap and clip for keys , a deep water bottle pocket that expands, and a quick-grab side handle for convenient carrying. Its laptop compartment also felt extremely sturdy and safe; it’s padded generously and has a soft lining. Plus, the nylon exterior is thick, rigid, and durable, and we didn’t see any signs of wear and tear after weeks of testing it every day.

The bag has adjustable shoulder straps and a chest buckle for stability, and it’s extremely comfortable to carry thanks to cushy, high-quality padding. It was a bit heavy compared to other laptop backpacks — a factor that could be a game changer, particularly for someone shorter or more petite.

Laptop Size: 16 inches | Colors: 3 | Material: 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon | Extra Features: Contoured back panel, exterior water bottle pocket, smart tracker pocket (designed for Apple AirTags), padded side handle, strap and clip for keys

Best for Students

Fjällräven räven 28.

Huge storage capacity with numerous pockets and compartments

Protected laptop during drop test, and when we placed the bag in spilled water

Comfortable, supportive straps that don’t dig into your shoulders when wearing it

We wish the water bottle pockets on the side were bigger

If you’re in the market for a backpack for school, field trips, and the like, this bag provides vast storage capacity for supplies, notebooks, and laptops, and is easy to transport. We found that this bag easily fit everything in our packing test with tons of pockets to spare. The padded laptop compartments can fit two laptops and an iPad. In addition to two water bottle holders (which we wish were a bit larger), there are several hidden pockets for valuables, and many more for organizing.

We also loved the design of this backpack. The straps and back are also mesh which is great for breathability. Plushy straps, a leather top handle, and classic canvas material are just a few features of this versatile backpack. We were somewhat worried about the canvas collecting dust and being susceptible to stains, but it fared well during testing. It held up during our impact test and protected the laptop from sustaining any damage. We would recommend this product, especially to a student or someone commuting.

How it's held up: Over two months, we used this backpack about three times per week for work and various times for travel. It offers plenty of space and numerous compartments for storage, organization, and more. It sits flat against your back, which makes it great for commuting, especially on the subway. It’s supportive and super comfortable to wear and doesn’t dig into your shoulders. And when we accidentally set it down in spilled water, the laptop remained dry and protected.

Laptop Size: 15 inches | Colors: Basalt, foliage green, navy, terracotta brown, port, and more | Material: Polyester, cotton | Extra Features: Mesh organized pockets, adjustable padded straps

Best for Outdoors

Solgaard lifepack backpack.

USB ports for charging devices, which are discreetly hidden

Plush drop-proof laptop sleeve, which protected our computer during the drop test

Design is made with recycled materials, and includes anti-theft lock

Solarbank is sold separately

Pockets in the front compartment could be more versatile

If you’re adventuring into the wilderness, or perhaps just a casual backyard campout, this Solgaard backpack has space for everything you’ll need. It has a large capacity and spacious interior. Overall, we loved the design and were impressed with how much it can fit. Plus, the cushioned straps and chest strap made this backpack incredibly comfortable. Plus, its material is made from 100 percent recycled plastic, so you can feel good about your purchase.

This backpack has a plush drop-proof laptop sleeve which proved effective during testing — protecting the test laptop from sustaining damage. The backpack feels very durable and offers lots of cushion for the items inside. It’s also compatible with Solagaard’s sister product — the Solarbank Boombox — which acts as a portable charger, Bluetooth, and sound system. The only hiccup is you have to purchase the Solarbank separately.

How it's held up: We used this for our work commute and travels for over two months and we love the innovation with this backpack. It contains incredible storage for technology like laptops, chargers, iPads, and more. The plugs and wires in the bag are very discreet. If we have to name a con, we’d say the pockets in the front section could be more versatile — they’re rather small and don’t fit larger items.

Other Laptop Backpacks We Tried

Lululemon Everywhere Backpack 22L : Lululemon’s answer to an everyday backpack has a large, deep main pocket that easily accommodates a 16-inch laptop, books, and personal items. However, the water bottle holders are small, there’s minimal padding on the back, and a lack of internal organizational pockets, which can make it tougher to find smaller items.

Herschel Kaslo Tech Backpack 30L : Herschel’s 30-liter backpack is highly spacious and designed for optimal organization, featuring multiple zippered compartments that accommodate a significant amount of equipment. We found that its padding and cushioning effectively protect its contents, even during accidental falls, and that it showed no signs of wear and tear after use. However, the bag's large size can be overwhelming for smaller frames, and its material — EcoSystem 600D fabric made from 100 percent recycled post-consumer water bottles — is rough to the touch and can cause discomfort. It’s best for those carrying equipment, like DJs or tech wizards, rather than those who only need to transport a couple of laptops and chargers.

What to Know About Laptop Backpacks

When you’re buying a backpack, especially one for transporting a laptop, you should consider the capacity and how much will fit. Some backpacks only fit certain size laptops, others might just fit a laptop and a few other things, and some can store several clothes as well as notebooks, laptops, and more. And bonus points if there are lots of pockets and compartments for organizing your items. “Compartmentalizing work items creates ease of navigation on the go,” Volpe says.

Durability

“Another factor in purchasing a travel laptop bag is durability,” says Volpe. She points out various travel hazards like spilled coffee on planes and rainstorms where a good backpack material can be the difference between a ruined day and momentary inconvenience. “Durable materials like leather are lux and long lasting,” says Volpe, adding that “they also take wear and tear nicely.” She points out that the look of leather improves over time, so even once it’s worn down over time, it will retain that vintage leather aesthetic.

“Another great option for durability is high quality polyester,” she says (as well as nylon). She adds that this material generally costs less than leather, and can “outlast torrential downpours and being crammed into an overhead compartment.”

The design of a backpack can aid or hinder your travels, so you want to look for features that add to the overall comfort, durability, and use of the bag. Features like adjustable straps, the ability to connect to a charger, and the number of pockets and storage compartments are all important factors to look for.

In terms of style, Volpe says, “Instead of being too trend forward I look for a travel laptop bag that has an aesthetic which can last for three to four years versus one season.” She suggests avoiding wild prints/patterns and looking for solid colors that will pair well with many outfits and occasions. “A travel laptop bag isn't something you just throw away like a budget friendly evening clutch,” exclaims Volpe. “It has to be appropriate to take to business meetings and while working from your local coffee shop.”

But it doesn’t have to be boring, she adds. “Color is A-Okay for the creative and fun loving types. Combination neutrals like cream, brown and gray are chic, mature and versatile to coordinate with any outfit,” she says. And for the tech savvy shopper? “You may want a travel laptop bag that has a headphone port, RFID-blocking ID slots, and/or an external USB with a built-in charging cable.”

The price of a laptop backpack can range from $50 to nearing $500, so you just have to keep your budget in mind, as well as the features you’re not willing to compromise on and find a bag that meets both of those criteria. Certain materials like leather will cost more, whereas you can find less expensive bags via materials like polyester. Tech features, like charging capabilities, can also add to the cost.

Our team tested 53 of the top-rated laptop backpacks for travel in our lab, comparing qualities like design, capacity, durability, level of comfort, and overall value. After testing these features, 18 bags came out ahead as our winners.

  • Setup: First our team assessed the design of the bags, looking at storage capacity, various pockets and compartments, ability to be organized, and so forth. Then they simulated packing a bag for a trip with real items like a prop laptop, prop iPad, chargers, notebooks, a layer of clothing, a water bottle, and a cosmetic bag.
  • Functionality: Once the bag was packed, our team tested its functionality, considering how much it weighed, how comfortable it was to carry around, and if any part of the design aided its overall use and portability (like adjustable straps for instance).
  • Durability: To test the durability and level of protection, we dropped each bag with a prop laptop inside twice, to see if it provided adequate cushioning to keep the computer intact. The laptops were then checked for scratches and damage and turned on to see if the internal hardware had been affected by the impact. Our chosen laptop backpacks for travel were supportive and cushioned and kept the laptops from experiencing damage. We continued testing for two months in the real world to collect additional insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

During the TSA check process at the airport, it’s all about efficiency and helping security see what’s in your bag without other items getting in the way. Some backpacks have a dedicated laptop sleeve that can help this process because it separates your laptop from the other items in your bag. Additionally, backpacks that can be fully unzipped, so agents can easily see the contents inside, would also be considered TSA-friendly.

As a general rule, most airlines won’t let you carry on a backpack that’s bigger than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide, and nine inches deep. This is to ensure the bag will fit comfortably underneath the airplane seat or in the overhead compartment. If you have a backpack that exceeds these measurements, you’ll have to check it, so keep the dimensions in mind when making a selection.

A durable nylon or polyester will be the most enduring material for a travel bag. Both materials are water-resistant, and less susceptible to rips and tears than other materials. In some high end bags you’ll see leather used, which is fairly durable, and also provides an element of style. So the best material depends on if you care more about fashion or function.

Why trust tripsavvy.

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

A solid backpack is key to a successful trip. Think about it: You can use it as a carry-on, and if you pack light, it'll be the only piece of luggage you bring on a trip. It won't weigh you down as you rush to catch the inter-terminal train at the airport, and it'll look good on you as you stroll the streets of your destination. Find a good travel backpack, and it will serve you for years to come.

There’s a lot to consider when looking for a backpack to take you through all kinds of situations and environments. Waterproof, anti-theft, stylish, lightweight, wheels or no wheels—all things to keep in mind as you shop. To help you make the right choice, we tested 32 carry-on backpacks in our New York testing lab and in the real world. We tested for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value.

Best Overall

Super durable material

Very comfortable with multiple carry methods

Lighter and more rugged than previous models

Nothing yet

Does the perfect travel backpack exist? We’re not sure, but we can’t think of one that comes closer than the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L. This second version of Cotopaxi’s best-selling backpack is rugged and comfy, has excellent organization capabilities, and is the perfect size to throw in an overhead bin, toss in a vehicle, and huff around from train to hostel.

The pack uses burly TPU-coated 1000-denier polyester and lightweight 840-denier ballistic nylon paneling. It has excellent weight distribution with comfy shoulder and sternum straps and hip belts, or stow the straps and carry the pack with side handles. The inside features multiple pockets of different sizes that we found perfect for separating clean and dirty clothes, electronics, and shoes. Bonus: It comes with a rainfly to protect it from the weather.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Osprey fairview 40.

Quite spacious while remaining carry-on sized

Keeps belongings secure

Good padding and weight distribution

Osprey’s women-specific Fairview 40 pack impressed our tester with its size, space, and compartments. “This bag has a lot of compartments and a lot of straps to hold everything in place,” our tester reported. Despite the bag fitting a bit large, our tester said it was still very comfortable to wear. Osprey employs its proprietary Lightwire Frame Suspension, which helps spread the weight across the back panel and from the harness to the hip belt.

Despite being a 40-liter pack, it weighs just about 3 pounds, thanks to the lightweight nylon ripstop material and frame. “It did not hurt my back, and I like how most of the weight was shifted to my lower back,” our tester mentioned. Besides the fit, we also appreciated that all straps are stowable, making it easy in case you need to check the bag on a plane (which is possible on smaller planes with this larger-capacity pack). For the men’s version of the same pack, check out the Farpoint 40 .

Capacity: 38 liters (extra-small/small size) | Weight: 3 pounds, 1 ounce | Dimensions: 19.3 x 13.8 x 8 inches | Materials: 210-denier nylon mini hex diamond ripstop and 600-denier packcloth

Best Budget

Vancropak 40l travel backpack.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 3 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

Great for a short-to-medium-length trip

Could double as a business travel pack

Feature packed and user friendly

Lacks tech compartment

Cloth material could get dirty easily

This 40-liter pack checks all the boxes, including excellent value. Vancropak says it fits enough for trips between three and seven days, and we’d have to agree. “It fit everything even though I packed quickly and not thoughtfully or strategically,” our tester said. “It’s perfect for a weekend trip when you want to pack extra ‘just in case’ outfits or items. It even expands to provide more room. It has extra pockets, opens like a suitcase, has many different handles, and backpack straps that can be tucked and zipped away.” Compression straps also help shrink the bag back down after being packed.

And if you weren’t convinced yet of its value, it also includes packing cubes. “Its business-casual aesthetic makes it ideal for short business trips, too,” a tester added. One nitpick? There’s no laptop sleeve. But our testers thought the other features—and comfort—more than made up for that slight issue.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3.98 pounds | Dimensions: 20 x 13.7 x 6.2 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester

Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack

Functional straps

Multiple ways to carry

Not too weighty

Our tester didn’t love the style

If you didn’t dig the budget pack above, behold another excellent value travel pack. Like the Vancropak, the Asenlin Travel Backpack also includes three packing cubes. Our testers found they could easily fit everything needed for a weekend trip. They also liked the internal straps for organization and the external straps for compression. “It offers three different carrying methods, which is nice,” the testers reported. “It has a lot of different pockets and storage areas. The bottle holder on the side also unzips to expand, which is a thoughtful addition.”

Our testers liked how comfortable the bag was to wear and that it wasn’t overly heavy (the brand claims it weighs less than 3 pounds). We also believe this could double as a business travel bag.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Dimensions: 18.5 x 12.5 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester Oxford cloth

Best for Business Travel

Nomatic travel bag.

  • Comfort 3 /5

Fits about a week’s worth of items

Loads of internal organization

Comes with an additional laundry bag

Uncomfortable to carry at times

Some scuff marks after tossing around

While we certainly love this bag's sleek and simplistic aesthetic, there’s a lot more to it than just looks. It’s durable and water-resistant and has multiple carry options (e.g., duffel and over the shoulders), a separate shoe compartment, lots of tech organization, and a TSA-ready laptop sleeve.

Our testers loved the capacity of this pack. “It easily fit everything on the list with plenty of room to spare,” one tester said. “I think everything you would need for up to a week away would fit easily.” The pronounced rectangular shape of the bag made it extra easy to pack and helped organize folded clothes. “The bag had two different shoe pockets, a laptop sleeve, and many other compartments for both smaller clothing items and even some work supplies,” a tester reported.

The one drawback of this pack was our testers didn’t find it the most comfortable. Specifically, the straps were stiff and dug into one tester’s neck. Overall, though, our testers were very pleased with the pack and thought it was worth the fit, especially for the design and ease of packing.

Best Multi-use

Peak design travel backpack 45l.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Excellent capacity

Easy to handle

Thoughtful storage solutions

This 45-liter travel pack from Peak Design debuted at the Outdoor Retailer Expo in 2018 and promptly won many awards. A few years later, it still holds up. Peak Design basically thought of everything when designing this pack. The outside features weatherproof recycled 400-denier nylon canvas and ultralight padded foam. It includes grab handles on each side, stowable hip belts, and a sternum strap. The inside has multiple pockets for organization and loads of room for trips of four days or longer.

Our testers loved the size and the zippers allowing access from four different sides of the bag. “It was super easy to pack, and there were just enough organization solutions to provide options for different packing strategies,” a tester said. “I also loved how many handles there were. A grab handle on all four main sides of the bag makes it super easy to maneuver, especially when putting it in the overhead compartment.”

Testers also liked the sheath built into the pack to stow the hip belt and the small pocket on the belt for stashing quick-grab items like lip balm, keys, or cards. They also enjoyed the water bottle pockets on both sides and the pack's comfort. Oh, and this pack is 100 percent carbon neutral. The only issue they saw was the price—it’s one of the most expensive on this list. But if you can look at this as an investment, the durability suggests it should last for many years. It's certainly carry-on luggage that any travel-savvy guy can appreciate.

Capacity: 45 liters | Weight: 4.5 pounds | Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Weatherproof 100 percent recycled 400-denier nylon canvas external shell and 900-denier waterproof bottom liner

Most Comfortable

Topo designs global travel bag 40l.

Excellent internal organization

Many different carrying options

Great for long travel days

Could be roomier

If your travel involves carrying your backpack for long periods, we recommend Topo Designs' Global Travel Bag. This super durable pack is also super comfortable with plush and padded shoulder straps and a hip belt. We also love that there are multiple ways to carry this pack with a comfy and padded sling. Its construction includes durable and recycled nylons with a canvas feel. And it meets Fair Wear certification standards, ensuring fair labor practices.

“There are a ton of compartments and pockets, so a lot of options for staying organized with small or loose items in the absence of packing cubes,” one tester said. “I could easily see places to stash cords, travel docs, electronics, water bottles, and more.”

While our testers liked a lot about this bag—including its durability—the comfort won them over. “All the features built into the bag suggest it's intended to create maximum comfort for someone who anticipates carrying the bag for a more extended period of time,” our tester concluded.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3 pounds, 10.4 ounces | Dimensions: 22.5 x 14 x 7.5 inches | Materials: 1000-denier recycled nylon, 400-denier recycled nylon, 210-denier recycled nylon, 1680-denier recycled ballistic nylon

Best Splurge

Bellroy transit backpack plus.

Flat opening made for easy packing

Comfortable to carry

Long lasting

Minimal internal organization

If you weren't convinced by our business travel pick above, consider this your alternative. This pack's sleek, durable, and comfortable design makes it ideal for business and formal travel. Our testers found it easy to fit enough items for up to three or four days away. Lighter packers could stretch this to five days. The inside is designed more like a typical carry-on pack with one large compartment.

“This bag felt super light on my back and was padded in all the right places,” a tester reported. “It has adjustable sternum and waist straps that you can tuck into the back of the pack when you don't want to use them, which is a genius feature.” Our testers were also impressed with the bag's durability, as it survived being tossed around our lab with zero marks or scuffs.

Capacity: 38 liters | Weight: 3.3 pounds | Dimensions: 21.7 x 15 x 9.4 inches | Materials: Recycled Dura nylon

Samsonite Silhouette 17 Backpack

  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

Suitcase-like opening allows easy access

Eco-friendly materials

Suitable for long travel days

Internal organization may be overcomplicated for some

Launched in 1958, Samsonite’s Silhouette collection is likely the oldest on our list. But those six decades of innovation have helped make this one of the best and most versatile bags out there—not to mention one with excellent style. You can also feel good about your purchase knowing that it features 100 percent post-consumer recycled PET bottles.

Our testers liked the size of the bag and the opening, similar to a suitcase, which made it easy to pack and access items. There were many—almost too many—pockets and compartments. And our testers loved how comfortable and supportive this bag was to carry, noting its excellent weight distribution. “I would recommend this bag to someone looking for a backpack they can use as a primary form of luggage,” a tester concluded. “It has enough room and compartments to fit all of the essentials and keep them organized. It's also comfortable, supportive, and easy to carry.”

Capacity: Not listed | Weight: 3.31 pounds | Dimensions: 20 x 12.5 x 7 inches | Materials: Polyester and Recyclex

Best for Techies

Thule subterra backpack 34l.

Functional and looks good

Bag included for dirty laundry

Portable charger

Not the most comfortable

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with Thule’s line of luggage. And that certainly includes the Subterra backpack. This rugged pack could also be a good commuter option as it has a magnetic rolling top closure, a padded laptop sleeve, and a PowerPocket for charging items on the go. We love that it has many access points and comes with a packing cube and garment bag for dirty clothes.

"I loved being able to put my normal packing cubes inside the big cube that comes with the bag, and I was able to use the bag as a day bag anytime I needed to carry extra, and it never felt super bulky,” a tester reported—however, they noted that the bag didn’t particularly help their already-sore back. Not surprisingly, considering its construction, the pack aced our durability tests.

Capacity: 34 liters | Weight: 2.75 pounds | Dimensions: 20.5 x 12.2 x 9.1 inches | Materials: 800-denier nylon

Best for Storage

Mystery ranch mission rover.

Sturdy with grab handles around the pack

Well-designed internal storage

Different ways to carry

A bit heavy

If you’ve never heard of Mystery Ranch, let us introduce you to the Bozeman, Montana-based brand, which makes super rugged packs for backpacking, hunting, the military, and firefighters. This travel-focused pack is incredibly solid on the outside and has many excellent organization and design features inside.

Highlights include a stowable hip belt and shoulder straps, multiple carrying options, a dirty clothes compartment, three inner divided pockets, and lockable zippers.

Capacity: 30, 45, and 60 liters | Weight: 4.3 pounds | Dimensions: 21 x 13 x 12 inches | Materials: Plain spun nylon, 210-denier nylon

We recommend the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack thanks to its incredibly durable polyester and nylon materials, well-designed internal storage, and included rainfly. Another great pick is the Vancropak Travel Backpack , which rings up at a fraction of the cost of some other options on the market.

We selected products to test based on the expertise of TripSavvy editors and writers and on internet research. Not surprisingly, TripSavvy editors and writers travel a lot. And they have many carry-on backpacks they like and don’t like.

To ensure we weren’t missing anything, we also researched what other prominent sites have featured and looked at top-rated and reviewed backpacks on sites like Amazon and REI. Once an initial list of products was selected, we narrowed it down to the final 28 for testing based on style, function, and price.

We tested the backpacks for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value. In our New York City-based testing lab, we asked testers to pack each backpack with three shirts, two pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag to test for capacity. We asked the testers to consider all aspects of the backpack’s construction, organizational capabilities, and any design innovations.

Testers then carried each backpack around using the different carrying styles. We asked the testers to rate how comfortable the bag felt fully packed. After the comfort test, we asked testers to toss and throw the bag several feet multiple times. We looked for damage on the outside of the bag and any damage to products inside the bag. Lastly, we asked testers to rate the bag for overall value after a price reveal.

We have since sent the backpacks to testers to continue testing as they travel. We will update this document accordingly as their insights are submitted.

Aer Travel Pack 3 : This pack was comfortable to wear thanks to its supportively firm and cushioned back, while its rugged fabric stood up well to rough handling. Our tester subtracted some points for capacity, as it was a squeeze to get everything on the list to fit, and for the more function-forward style.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack : This bag is very nice to look at and proved quite durable. However, it's on the small side and the features aren't particularly travel-oriented—namely, the inflexible bottle holder and the magnetic flip top that is easily displaced when the pack is full.

Minaal Carry-on 3.0 Bag : Our tester appreciated the comfort of the straps and the practical capacity of this bag, though the price was on the higher end and the packing experience was a bit of a learning curve.

Monos Metro Backpack : Another looker, the design of this bag got high praise. We liked the 270-degree opening, the easy-release front pouch, and the comfortable straps. At 18 liters, this back is more of a complement piece to other luggage and could use a better weight distribution system.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable : The expansion feature was a hit once we figured out how to use it and the durability of this pack was undeniable. It was difficult to look past a faulty zipper design that got caught frequently when trying to close.

What to Look For in a Carry-on Backpack

Prices for carry-on backpacks vary widely, so consider what your greatest needs are. You can find a spacious travel backpack for under $100—often under $50—but if you plan on facing harsh outdoor environments , consider investing a bit more money for something waterproof. Leather backpacks can cost hundreds of dollars; keep this in mind if that material is important to you. Anti-theft travel backpacks can be a bit more expensive but are often essential in highly trafficked destinations.

There are so many styles out there you could spend days filtering through the different backpacks on the market. Keep it simple: How will you be using this backpack? If you’re interfacing with clients or business partners, look for something minimal and sleek that doesn’t showcase a million pockets. If you plan on living out of your backpack for most of your trip, pockets are more of a priority. You'll want a bag that zips open flat like a suitcase for easy packing and unloading (this also makes going through security easier).

If you are using your travel backpack for hiking, find something with a removable hip harness to distribute the weight of your pack better when you’re on the move. If you plan on wearing your travel backpack casually—only in the airport or to work—seek out a style with adjustable straps and a padded back. This will help ward off any back pain, especially if you carry a lot of weight. When you’re trying on backpacks, test out the shoulder straps and imagine how they would feel if the pack was filled to capacity. Is there ample padding? Will the material cut into your shoulders? Does the back of the backpack feel like it would be breathable?

The size of backpacks is generally measured in volume (liters) or dimensions (inches or centimeters). While it is essential to refer to the specific requirements of the airline you'll be flying, a good starting point for a carry-on when flying domestically is 22 x 14 x 9 inches or 45 total linear inches (115 centimeters) including all handles and wheels. This size comes out to a 43-liter pack, so anything smaller should easily meet any U.S. airline size restrictions. However, this is only the beginning, and several factors may increase or decrease your allowance, such as the size of the plane and flight class you book.

This will vary based on your backpack's materials. For nylon and other water-resistant fabrics, get a damp cloth and spot-clean your pack. A damp cloth will also do the trick if your bag has plastic or metal elements. For leather backpacks, you’ll want to purchase a special leather conditioner and cleaner to maintain the integrity of your backpack.

This is an excellent feature if you plan on hiking or spending long periods carrying your backpack. It will help distribute the weight of your pack better across your body, ultimately providing more comfort. Most backpacks that are focused on outdoor adventures will have this feature.

Many backpacks are marketed as anti-theft, meaning it’s tougher for someone else to get inside your pack. Some backpacks have zippers that allow you to open the main interior compartment while wearing it—so you don’t have to take it off and risk having someone else pick it up. Others are designed with webbing over the zipper openings, making it very hard for someone to locate and unzip the bag while you have it on.

No, this is not the norm when it comes to backpacks. Compression cords make packing easier and function the same way a compression strap or cord would work in a regular suitcase. Some travel-focused carry-on backpacks do have this built-in. But if you want to squeeze in more items, consider investing in some packing cubes . These will help organize your backpack, too.

Nathan Allen is TripSavvy’s Outdoor Gear Editor. He has traveled to five continents, including plane, train, and bus travel. For most travel scenarios, he prefers backpacks over spinners or roller suitcases because of their ruggedness and different carrying methods. Why it’s great: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition is a good-looking, well-made piece that transitions perfectly from the coffee shop to the conference room. It strikes a happy medium for professionals who appreciate a polished look and want some protection for their devices but don’t want to flout a semi-casual dress code.

The Bellroy tote we tested is made of a fine-weave polyester (created from recycled water bottles) that’s durable and water-resistant. This bag is ideal for people who need something that will survive scuffs, drops, stains, and routine overpacking. Commuters caught in the rain will also be comforted to know that the laptop tote’s shell repelled water well when we held it under a running faucet. And the exterior zip pocket offers an airtight seal to keep water from destroying valuables.

View of the inside of the Bellroy Tokyo Tote, containing a laptop in one of the pockets, a scarf, and several books.

When we tested a previous generation of the Tokyo Tote, our panelists’ favorite features were, of all things, the interior pop-out, magnetic pockets (for holding a water bottle upright inside the bag). The Second Edition has the same pockets they loved. When the pockets aren’t in use, you can just push them inward, and they spring back into the tote’s frame. These internal pockets are located on both sides of the bag, and they’re also big enough to fit a pair of flip-flops or dirty gym clothes you want to keep separate from the rest of your stuff.

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition also has a large exterior zip pocket, plus two interior pockets (one with a key clip) that are large enough to hold a Field Notes book , a smartphone, sunglasses , or a wrapped USB cord. And the padded laptop section provides ample protection and snugly holds laptops with screens up to 13 inches. The carry handles have a 12-inch drop, so they’re longer and more comfortable to use than the handles on any other bag we recommend. Those handles are padded for added comfort, and they’re coated with no-skid rubber, to prevent the bag from sliding off your shoulder while you’re commuting.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote ’s durable shell is similar to that of the now-discontinued sibling tote we previously tested. This shell can be abrasive against delicate work clothing, and in previous testing, the tote’s exterior pilled knitted sweaters and snagged blouses made of polyester blends. The new handles have softer edges that didn’t snag our shirts as much during testing. The straps also feature no-slip patches, which further reduce pilling at the shoulders (but not near the bust, where most pilling occurs during carry).

This laptop tote’s weave also attracts pet hair like a magnet. If you’ve got a furry friend at home, we don’t recommend the black version, which spotlights pet hair of every shade.

A tote and messenger bag in one: Lo & Sons The O.G. 2

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium)

Utility player.

This nylon tote doubles as a messenger bag, works well for frequent flyers, and offers lots of organization and padded laptop protection. But its added functionality makes it the heaviest of our picks.

Who should get this: Commuters who like the look of a tote bag but prefer the functionality of a cross-body messenger.

Why it’s great: We love the nylon Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium) for its versatility. It has a conveniently long crossbody strap and a variety of storage compartments, and it offers ample laptop protection. It’s the just-right blend of a tote and a messenger bag.

This bag grabbed our attention with touches like gleamy accent hardware, contrasting interior lining, plentiful pockets, and studded feet. The O.G. 2 features a three-color design consisting of a neutral exterior, which you can spice up with several fun interior colors. It also comes in medium and large sizes.

This laptop tote boasts a ton of organization: four large zip compartments, four slip pockets, two pen pockets, a laptop or document holder, a hidden shoe compartment, and a long key leash. Thanks to the bag’s concealed zipper design, half of its storage features are in an external compartment that’s hidden out of sight. We like to think that means subway thieves will overlook you when they’re hunting for an easy mark.

The O.G. 2 provides more laptop protection than any other tote we recommend. The laptop compartment, the exterior, and even the individual pockets are padded to shield electronics from cracks and dings.

View of the inside of the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, containing headphones, a scarf, a book, and a notebook.

This bag does a good job of keeping liquids at bay. It has tight seams, so spilled drinks won’t penetrate the base, unlike with its sibling, the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, in the Competition section .

The O.G. 2 model is the only laptop tote bag designed for travel that we recommend. Both the medium and large sizes should fit under most airplane seats. And the backside features a zippered trolley sleeve, so travelers can secure the bag over luggage handles.

And this tote is also one of two bags we recommend with a crossbody strap—our EaseGave Laptop Bag pick is the other. Each has a wide, thick strap, like a seatbelt, but we prefer The O.G. 2’s design, which consists of thicker hardware and a longer strap. The thicker slide adjuster ensures that the strap won’t suddenly become slack on your trek to work. Also, the longer strap—up to 7 inches longer than that of the competition—lets you adjust it to accommodate a wider variety of body sizes and heights. And we like that this bag allows you to carry it with the shorter handles, which are easier to grab and go.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The slimish profile of the The O.G. 2 isn’t ideal for commuters who carry a ton of gear. The bag is cushiony, and the sides taper at the top, so the space is narrow. That also makes it harder to rummage in the bag and find what you need while you’re on the move.

At 2.6 pounds, this bag in medium is one of the heaviest we tested. Only the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (Classic), the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, and the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag (all in the Competition section) were heavier, weighing from 2.7 to 3 pounds each. (Note: The large-size Lo & Sons O.G. 2 bag weighs slightly more, at 3 pounds.)

Some 14- and 15-inch laptops can fit inside the bag’s main compartment but don’t fit inside the padded laptop compartment.

Dimensions: 13.75 by 16.6 by 6.75 inches (medium); 14.25 by 16.5 by 6.75 inches (large) Handle drop: 9.5 inches (medium); 10 inches (large) Weight: 2.6 pounds (medium); 3 pounds (large) Warranty: one-year warranty Colors: black/gold/gray, black/gold/lavender, black/gold/camel, black/silver/lavender, black/silver/gray, black/gunmetal/gray, deep navy/gold/camel, gray/silver/azure

A sophisticated leather tote: Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote

The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pale leather with an orange tag.

Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag

A refined open-top tote.

If you’re ready to invest in a high-quality bag, this pebbled leather tote offers style and sophistication. Though there is a dedicated laptop compartment that zippers closed, the rest of the bag stays open at the top.

Who should get this: People with a higher budget who want an upscale leather tote with a refined silhouette.

Why it’s great: The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag is spendy, but for the price it delivers sophisticated styling, supple pebbled leather, and structured design. The stitching on ours was perfect and didn’t fray, the leather felt luxuriously smooth, and the upright design never slouched or tipped.

Since we first made the Perry a pick, it has been slightly redesigned; we have not tested the new model, but the minor changes appear to have made the updated bag even more functional than its predecessor. It is now an inch bigger and includes three small internal slip pockets.

The Perry has a dedicated laptop slot in its center, dividing the bag into two parts. We like that the division offers some organizational structure, which is hard to find in a high-end leather tote.

The laptop compartment zips shut and is large enough to hold a 13-inch model and maybe a thin document or two. The Perry’s compartment is also raised off the bottom of the bag, so if you mistakenly plop your bag on the ground, you won’t dent your laptop in the process.

The Perry is a dream to carry. The original version weighed 1.8 pounds, half as much as many other contenders we dismissed ; the new version is nearly the same weight, according to the manufacturer specs. But what really surprised us was that the Perry, despite its somewhat thin straps, was still comfortable enough to carry, packed with gear, for a full day of commuting.

A laptop tucked into the zippered inner pocket of the Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag.

Some of the priciest laptop tote bags we tried—including the over-$500 Lo & Sons Seville Tote , in the Competition section—aren’t leakproof. So we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the Tory Burch Perry tote is. In our tests, the burnished seams were reliably strong, neither buckling under a heavy load nor allowing spilled beverages in.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like most open-top bags we tested, the Perry doesn’t offer much protection from the elements. Only the laptop compartment has a zipper, so the bag doesn’t shield the rest of your stuff very well.

Also, the laptop compartment isn’t padded. But because it’s elevated off the bottom of the bag and isn’t exposed on either side, we’re not overly worried about a computer or tablet getting banged up while inside.

Dimensions: 14 by 5 by 11.6 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1.8 pounds (previous version; current version is the same, according to manufacturer’s specs) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: black, clam shell, new ivory, light umber, new cream, brick, feather gray, devon sand, natural

A classic leather tote to last a lifetime: Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

The Carl Friedrik Ashby, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

An elegant forever bag.

Handmade in Italy, this leather tote looks and feels extra special, has plenty of room for your belongings, and zips securely across the top. It’s the priciest of our picks, but it is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Who should get this: Those in search of a timeless leather bag that’s only going to get better with age—and those willing to pay a premium for it.

Why it’s great: The Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote is a bag that commands attention. This gorgeous leather tote is handmade in Italy, and though it’s the most expensive option we tested, it’s well worth the price. For about $650, you get a bag with unquestionable quality, beautiful lines, and a lifetime warranty.

Carl Friedrik is a brand known for elegance, and it delivers with the Ashby tote. With its clean lines and pristine details, this tote radiates classic good taste. The longer you own the Ashby, the better it will look: It’s made of vegetable-tanned, full-grain Vachetta leather, which will develop a patina over time and get even richer with use. The surface is finished, which gives it a slight sheen and protects against water stains and scuffs.

Heavy-duty zippers with polished teeth glide smoothly, and the stitching is near-perfect and incredibly sturdy. The Ashby reliably stays upright with no slouch—we pushed the bag from side to side, and it rocked but never fell over.

The Ashby is large but manageable, and it will work for many occasions. The straps fit comfortably over the shoulder. There’s a spacious main compartment that will easily hold commuting essentials, including a 13-inch laptop in a dedicated pocket. Note that this bag will easily accommodate a 15-inch laptop in the main compartment. There is also a large zip pocket and three slip pockets for storing smaller gear, like a wallet, pens, and charging cords.

View of the empty inside of the Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote, one of our favorite laptop totes.

Lastly, over the course of our testing, this is one of only four companies we’ve found offering a true lifetime warranty (the others are Duluth Trading Co. , Peak Design, and Timbuk2; Herschel, Targus , and others offer limited lifetime warranties that protect only against manufacturer defects not caused by long-term wear and tear). For a bag that costs as much as a car payment, we’ll take all the protection we can get.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: This is an expensive bag, though its cost is tempered by its excellent quality and lifetime warranty, which covers both wear and tear and manufacturer defects.

The Ashby’s straps are among the thinnest we’ve seen—on a par with those on our Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote pick. We found the Ashby’s straps comfortable to use, even when the bag was full. But this is something to be aware of if you haul extra-heavy loads.

This bag’s base lacks studded feet (found on both our EaseGave Laptop Bag and Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 picks), which protect the base from wear and tear.

Dimensions: 18 by 11.5 by 5 inches Handle drop: 9 inches Weight: 2.5 pounds Warranty: lifetime warranty Colors: cognac, black

A sleek, minimalist vegan tote: Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag

The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pink with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

Matt & Nat Abbi Vegan Tote Bag

An understated vegan leather bag.

Longer-than-average straps make this simple tote—roomy enough for larger laptops—easy to carry. But it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop compartment, so electronics could float around unprotected.

Who should get this: Those who care less about bells and whistles and just want a sleek bag that’s big enough to fit a laptop plus their daily gear.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches

Why it’s great: The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag is a spacious, no-frills work tote with a practical zippered top closure and long carry handles. It’s made of soft, vegan leather (produced from recycled windshield-glass resin) that’s thick enough to keep your bag’s contents from bulging uncomfortably.

The body of the bag is softly structured, and the base is wide and thick, ensuring that the bag remains upright when full and doesn’t spill. The zipper’s metallic accent color and long, tapered pull tab add to the tote’s sleek, understated look. The lining is made of 100% recycled plastic nylon, so it’s especially easy to spot-clean.

The Abbi tote’s interior has one open pocket that’s big enough to hold a smartphone or a slim wallet, plus one wallet-sized pocket with a zipper that echoes the exterior’s metallic finishes. But there is no dedicated laptop compartment.

We especially appreciate the Abbi’s long handles, which make tucking the bag under the arm easier (especially for those who have a larger chest). The handles have a 10-inch strap drop, 2 inches longer than those of many totes we researched, including some bags listed in our Competition section, from Cuyana, Dagne Dover, and Lo & Sons . Two inches may not seem like much, but when you’re hauling your laptop, commuting gear, and a few dinner ingredients, you’ll likely be thankful for the extra length.

Finally, we’d trust the Abbi to keep our belongings safe and dry if we were forced to rest it on the floor of a subway car. There’s a feeling of dread many commuters experience whenever they lift their bag off the ground, fearing they’ll discover that it’s dripping wet and their stuff is ruined. During our tests, the Abbi’s clean, tight seams didn’t let spills seep through this bag. And the vegan leather is easy to spot-clean.

View of the inside of the Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, with a laptop tucked inside.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Abbi’s minimalist design lacks a padded compartment for a laptop. For shock absorption, we recommend using a padded sleeve for your laptop in this bag.

The Abbi’s zipper doesn’t create an airtight seal—not unusual among zippered totes—so water may trickle in from above during a heavy rainstorm. When you’re traveling sans umbrella, carrying the bag under your arm should keep out most rainwater.

Vegan leathers can flake and peel after extended use (though Wirecutter’s Sasha VanHoven has had a Matt & Nat backpack made of a similar material for more than a year and hasn’t seen any peeling).

Matt & Nat’s one-year limited warranty policy doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. To extend the life of the bag, we recommend cleaning stains with warm water and dish soap, and coating it in faux-leather polish as needed.

Dimensions: 13.5 by 5.75 by 12 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1 pound Warranty: one-year limited warranty Colors: truffle black, daffodil yellow, pear green, doll peach, rosebud, canal blue, sorbet red, resort blue, citrine yellow

A sturdy budget tote: EaseGave Laptop Bag

The EaseGave Laptop Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in lavender with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

EaseGave Laptop Bag

An inexpensive faux leather bag.

This bag is well priced and extremely durable, and it has plenty of useful features—including a detachable messenger strap and metal feet. But it’s heavy and stiff, and few will mistake the exterior for real leather.

Who should get this: Commuters seeking a durable, functional tote on a budget.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches (for the 15.6-inch bag), 17 inches (for the 17.3-inch bag)

Why it’s great: The EaseGave Laptop Bag is the cheapest bag we recommend, but it doesn’t skimp on features. Made of top-grain polyurethane leather (PU leather for short), this laptop tote bag was thicker and more durable than other faux leather bags we tested, such as the flimsy Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote (featured in the Competition section). It mirrors the structured, rolled carry handles and the mixed compartments of the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (also in the Competition section), which costs nearly four times as much. The EaseGave’s carry handles and messenger strap are both adjustable, to give you the best fit, which is especially impressive for a bag at this price.

Our panelists were impressed by the EaseGave bag’s functionality. “I really think this is a great affordable bag,” said Wirecutter product manager Samina Begum. “It had an outside pocket for all the things that I needed to keep close at hand, and the fake leather did not scratch no matter how roughly I treated the material.”

Testers also appreciated this bag’s metal feet, which lift the bag slightly off the ground, keeping  spills and grimy subway platforms at a distance. Studded feet aside, the EaseGave bag didn’t soak up liquids during our spill tests.

Close view of the handles and crossbody strap on the EaseGave Laptop Bag.

The EaseGave bag comes in two sizes (15.6 inches and 17.3 inches), with a dedicated, padded compartment that can fit a tablet or laptop (up to 15 and 17 inches, respectively). The compartment fastens shut with a Velcro strap, and although it isn’t the most secure option, it’s enough to prevent a laptop from sliding out.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although testers liked the EaseGave bag’s structured, rectangular shape, they occasionally found it cumbersome to carry on a crowded bus or subway; it’s so stiff and rigid that it doesn’t compress down when tucked under an arm.

The EaseGave bag’s interior is rough and feels like cheap polyester, which isn’t surprising at this price. The padding of the laptop compartment is on only one side. The other side is a wall-to-wall zippered pocket, but the material is flimsy, and our commuters worried about its long-term durability. “I was super anxious that my keys in my zip pocket would rip through the thin fabric and scratch my computer,” said one tester.

The EaseGave bag is pretty heavy, even when empty: The 15.6-inch model is 2.3 pounds, and the 17.3-inch model is 2.6 pounds, which is almost double the weight of most laptop totes we recommend.

Dimensions: 15.35 by 4.53 by 12.2 inches; 17.1 by 4.53 by 13.1 inches Handle drop: 6 inches Crossbody strap: 27 to 47 inches Weight: 2.3 pounds (15-inch laptop model); 2.6 pounds (17-inch laptop model) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: purple, lemon, mint green, blackish green

To determine what makes a great laptop tote, we researched style blogs, bag forums, and online reviews, and we consulted our coworkers. We then compiled a list of dozens of well-reviewed laptop tote bags in a variety of styles, recording key information like price, size, materials, availability, and third-party reviews.

We also listed each bag’s notable features, such as zippered compartments, a dedicated laptop pocket, a crossbody strap, color options, and warranty coverage.

A laptop bag dripping with water suspended over a shallow clear container of water.

Once we had narrowed the pool and selected bags for in-person testing, we assessed each tote for its overall quality, the durability of the laptop compartments (when applicable), carrying comfort, weight, and water resistance.

We also had Wirecutter staffers commute with the semifinalists and then share their feedback.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

Open-top tote bags

Our panelists liked the bucket shape of the Cuyana Classic Structured Leather Tote . It has leather ties that can be used to help keep its open top closed, but our panelists balked at having to partially tie a bag closed using thick pieces of leather, which easily came undone.

The Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote Bag is lightweight and packs nicely into itself for storage, but our panelists preferred bags with a dedicated laptop compartment or some exterior padding.

Budget laptop bags

The Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote was really thin and showed wear and tear easily, so our panelists weren’t comfortable carrying a delicate laptop in it.

Our testers liked the gunmetal hardware accents on the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag , but they found the zippers to be sticky and a pain to use.

Traditional laptop tote bags

The vegan leather on the Dagne Dover Daily Tote looked unattractive, the zipper was clunky, and the straps were too thin to be comfortable. The Dagne Dover Signature Tote , also in vegan leather, was—at 3 pounds—the heaviest bag we tested. The carry handles were rope shaped, rather than flat like on most bags, and frequently fell off the shoulders of our testers. On top of that, our panelists thought the bag’s weight, rigid design, and thick, sharp edges made for a poor combination during commutes on a crowded subway train.

The Duluth Trading Co. Lifetime Leather Tote was heavy, thick, and uncomfortable to carry. The leather is treated with oil; it darkens when wet and takes forever to dry. And the zipper doesn’t offer a tight seal to protect delicate electronics from water damage.

The Lo & Sons Seville Tote is expensive and heavy, and the latch on the laptop compartment is hard to secure. Also, it didn’t keep out liquids during testing.

Travel laptop bags

The roomy Knomo Grosvenor Place Laptop Tote Bag had clean stitching, but it failed our liquid-blocking tests.

Although the Solo New York Jay Leather Tote has a full-grain leather body, we found the quality wasn’t as nice as that of most other leather bags we tested. The zippers were sticky, too, and the bag soaked up water during our liquid tests.

The Targus 15″ Newport East-West Tote is well made and offers ample laptop protection. But the carry straps were uncomfortable for us, and our panelists hated the bag’s traffic-cone orange interior color.

Top 10 Laptop Bags For Women

Meet the bags women use to carry their laptop to and from work.

When you head out the door in the morning, you’re likely carrying more than a handful of items (phone, keys, water bottle, lip gloss , etc.). Add a laptop to that lineup, and suddenly you’re everyday handbag just isn’t cutting it. So, whether you’re commuting to the office or traveling for pleasure, you need a durable laptop bag that will protect your device without sacrificing style or space for other things.

What To Look For In A Laptop Bag

The most important thing to look for in a laptop bag is a dedicated space for your device. Most laptop bags have a sleeve-style compartment that’s designed to protect your computer—others will have a large, zippered pocket that serves the same purpose. Either way, you should know what size your laptop’s screen is before you buy in order to avoid disappointment (and annoying return processes).

Aside from that, a great laptop bag will have convenient features like adjustable straps, key rings, water bottle sleeves, and exterior slip pockets. Bonus points for bags that have a trolley sleeve, as that makes it easy to throw your tote on top of your suitcase and roll your way through the airport with confidence.
