Yes it’s much quieter than it has been.

By July it won’t be as it was but getting better.

In Chaweng the Seen Beachclub is also open - until 10 pm and soon the ArkBar will open - I think if you visit Samui, there will be enough entertainmend in Chaweng, so that you dont have to drive to fishermans or bophut every night!

koh samui travel forum

The Ark Bar will not open until the end of this year the bars and facilities on the beach have been demolished and will be rebuilt.

Mario told he will open soon:

Could someone please advise good medium priced hotels near beach, yet only 10-15 minutes walk to bars restaurants, not to quiet area.

5 replies to this topic

' class=

Do wish people would title their posts better.

Then I wouldn't need to click on unanswerable questions.

Use hotel booking sites !!

There are hundreds if not thousands of hotels near the beach on Samui with a walk to bars restaurants, not to quiet area. On Samui 10-15mins walk can bring you a long way inland, and public access to the beaches can be limited. Sadly medium price means so many different things to different people, in addition what might be medium priced will likely vary depending on when you are travelling. Remember if you go anywhere, you need to think about things that are what you want from this trip.

What you want to pay per night, then think about what your style is - modern, traditional, mod cons, older style, big buffet breakfasts, pool, kids facililties, family holiday, honeymoon, girls/guys getaway etc etc etc etc.

Id then do a test booking on one of the many booking websites, as I know most people will find something that appeals to them. Then come back to the forum for comment.

You could look at La Vida, Chaweng Regent, Chaweng Garden, Baan Chaweng as a choice of 3-4* hotels that might fit your budget and requirements.

I appreciate your comments, well put, not like some

The food here for a start is very hit and miss. You order chicken one day and it's brown and tastes funny. The next day you order chicken from the same restaurant and it's white as it should be and tastes fine. The Thai restaurants back home are arguably nicer then any Thai dish i have had here. Iam not meaning to rant or bash the place. Iam just surprised as so many talk about how good the food is.

Chaweng itself is very limited in things to do. Pretty much just a beach with some pubs and restaurants and tailors thar harass you daily. They really are a thorn in your side each time you pass them.

I loved Ark Bar at night for its laid back party vibe and cool setting on the beach but could never stay long because of the harassment from those guys trying to get you to pay for a photo with a monkey, Iguana etc plus those idiots trying to sell you drugs. They just do not leave you alone.

The main street is pretty much dead during the day. Comes alive at night then closes by 12 leaving everywhere pretty much in darkness. The only area after 12 that's buzzing is green mango where all the bar girls are and old men etc

Over all i have failed to see why many people love it here. I personally would not come back. I met a girl on a day tour the other day that had arrived the day prior and she hated the place. She flew back out the next day to phuket instead.

Again. I truly don't mean to bash the place. I do like that laid back vibe here but over the years i have heard such amazing things about this place and words like paradise, heaven etc but iam here now and failing to see what the obsession is.

Price wise it's ok. I mean it's not cheap by any means but compared to back home it's around the same. Food and drink are a tad cheaper here maybe.

No regrets as such as you have to experience these places for yourself to form an opinion. Resort iam in is beautiful and the people are so nice. Iam just under whelmed not not particularly impressed with the island itself. Looking forward to leaving this weekend.

Anyone else been here and feel the same?

' class=

Yes another Ron T.

Not a review but an attitude.

I always get a chuckle out of those that say Thai food is better back home.

Back home the food is made to your culture and country tastes . It is very seldom authentic unless you befriend owner and ask them to cook like home.

my first place to visit was Koh samui in 2006 Was mesmerized by the experience. but have not been back since. I am sure it has changed for the worse.

koh samui travel forum

I think it's an issue of having overly high expectations. I love Samui but I'd never describe it as heaven or paradise. Samui can be a bit chaotic and it has its issues, but that's actually part of the appeal for me. I think I'd be pretty bored in "paradise". I like Samui the way it is, warts and all.

I think DragonLass nailed the biggest issue, expectations. We are all guilty of reading about some place and forming a picture in our mind. Then when the place doesn't match our visualization, we are disappointed. Blaa obviously had painted a different picture of Samui in their mind.

Good points about perspectives! I get so excited waiting to travel, and research a lot, so I try very hard not to build an expectation of the place.

Ko Chang..............LOL Holy Buddha, don't get me started ;-)

Back to Samui, and not sure, for me anyway, overly expected much, as told not to, but give it try. So I did AND I did venture out, pretty much completely around the whole island, as wanting to give it a fair shake, thinking, knowing, I wouldn't return, so check it all out now.

Nothing special. Also, nothing extremely wrong or negative, just a major difference of impression. At the time, give it, all the areas I visited, a 2 - 3*, but not for a swim in the beach holiday, and 1 - 2* for that.

Unless spending too much to fly in, then certain not worth the logistics, for us anyway. Just a personal choice.

But if flying 5 - 10k miles and or once in a lifetime holiday, I'd be disappointed. Really disappointed......LOL

It is what it is, a nice island in the Gulf, though again, that streetview now, compared to 10+ yrs ago, and progress hasn't been kind. I did see the attraction, for those that enjoy it, it's just different from what I enjoy.

Read a review of the local beach where I live, Ao Manao, and it's lovely. The reviewer wasn't impressed at all, and couldn't understand those that are 'overly' impressed. And I agreed with every point of their review. But I still love it.

It's lovely, and during the week, it's fairly deserted. Officially, one of the cleanest beaches, water quality and litter, or lack of...........But it's still a gulf beach, tidal, and far from a swimmer's beach, unless going out a few kms..........LOL, yea, very shallow, though not as bad as Sam Roi Yot. And not blue, green from all angles except my flying eye from way overhead. Full of tables and umbrellas, if not venturing away from the vendors, and even has jetskis and banana boat during the weekend..........oh say it isn't so. It is so, and why I hang out during the week, actually I'm rarely there, as to lazy to sign in, as Ao Prachuap bay, next door, fronting my favorite restaurant is just as lovely, if not going into the surf.

A lot of it, opinions, for every beach, comes down to a beach holiday, and what that means. If swimming and playing in the surf, then no, the Gulf, Samui, and most others, have a short window for that. But if looking at and enjoying different levels of comfort, especially higher end, which we aren't, then most will work with most people.

For myself, a balancing act of expense, and logistics...........and what else is available. In that aspect Samui fails miserably.......for us anyway.

As always............UP2U .... :-)

Or may be at the wrong island altogether, as Blaa L has been looking for a hotel near Soi Cowboy , a red light district, in Bangkok and a gentlemen's club in Pattaya .

Ko Samui doesn't offer that kind of night life and most visitors are glad that this is the case.

Readers of this thread should also know that Blaa L's unhappy encounter with Koh Samui started with him not booking on Agoda, but still expecting a hotel on the island to offer Agoda's low prepaid rates.

Well pointed out, as I advised him about one of his location queries, and that it may not be for him, as noticed his query history also.

And he got the Agoda price he wanted.............LOL

Ohh good catch Jim_Blocks! That does add some context.

"Blaa L's unhappy encounter with Koh Samui"

Ahhhh, so that's the poster we are dealing with. Just a plain straight up whinger, where nothing was ever going to make them happy.

I'm glad he didn't like KS, as it means when i next go i would know they wouldnt be there, expecting champagne on a beer budget.

It is low season at the moment so yes, it is quiet and Phuket busier, maybe doing some investigation into where you travel 1st would help

Maybe you should give it another go, different time and different area

Koh Samui, the largest of the Gulf

Koh samui travel guide.

Koh Samui is the biggest islands of the Gulf of Thailand , and the second largest of the country. However it is not really huge and you can go around and visit its most important beaches and touristic atraction point in one day by motorbike or car. Despite of its infraestructure and tourism development, Koh Samui still have wonderful beaches, as charming as other island, as Phuket, has.

In the past, Koh Samui was an island with some fisherman towns and little resort which guested mainly backpakers. But in few decades, it became into one of the most popular and developed touristic destination of the Kingdom of Siam. Nowadays this tropical island offers you everything: all kind of resorts, restaurants, nice beaches and all sort of alternatives for leisure.

🏖️ Best beaches in Koh Samui

We’ve been to all of them, these are the best:, 1️⃣ chaweng beach.

Chaweng beach is the main town in Koh Samui. It is a White Sand beach with a beautiful turquoise blue sea water. It is the most visited and lively place of the island and here you can find everything to enjoy.

Chaweng beach, Koh Samui

2️⃣ Bo Phut Beach

It is a Beautiful beach, good for swimming, with a large offers of stores, bars and restaurants. Here you can find the Fisherman Village, which every friday becomes the best night market of the island.

Bo Phut beach, Koh Samui, Thailand

3️⃣ Lamai Beach

Lamai is a long and beautiful beach with clear water, is the Second most famous beach in Koh Samui, after Chaweng. Here you can find some rocks that curiously look like male and female genitals.

4️⃣ Mae Nam Beach

It is a beautiful beach, peaceful and good for swimming, in the north of the island. It is ideal to stay if you want to escape from the masses and be tranquil in the resort. During the night there is nothing to do.

5️⃣ Choeng Mon Beach

Choeng Mon is a little pretty beach but also very calm (no parties and no massive tourism) place, so it is very suitable for families. In front, you can find the islet of Koh Fan Noi, where you can get by walking when low tide.

6️⃣ Siver Beach

Silver beach is a little pretty white sand beach with blue sea water. It is, perhaps, the most idyllic beach of Koh Samui, and it has all the features that you expect from a Thai island beach.

7️⃣ Lipa Noi Beach

Lila Noi is a beautiful and very quiet beach. Due to its low touristic development, there is no much to do beside swimming, sunbathing and relax. The nearest Town is 6 km away, so is a great place to be far away of everything.

8️⃣ Taling Ngam Beach

The lovely Taling Ngam beach is located on the west Side of Koh Samui and it is surrounded by a palm forest. It is a very good point to enjoy the a charming sunset view.

Travel Forums Asia koh samui

Hi drmsmq8!

Do you realize that it's probably going to rain on Koh Samui in October because of the monsoon season?

It might even be impossible to take the ferry to the island due to the sea condition, so you might want to book a flight.

For the 5 star hotel best check websites to find one satisfying your requirements:

http://www.asiatravel.com/kohsamui.html

http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/koh_samui_island.html?sort=star&extraSortStars=5

http://www6.hrs.com/changeLanguage.do;jsessionid=722D4DA14104B5DC6C5D3EC674FF5A16?clientId=ZGVfX0hSUw--&cid=6-4

The best place to stay as honeymooner is sandalwoods .

Take a look at it, its a really beautiful place and very romantic.

Try to stay near the beach.

Yes, it is rain in Thailand around this time of the year. However, it is not all day rain but rather a huge downpours for just 1 or 2 hrs. Instead of ruining your day, it rather spice up a little romance.

My wife and I went to Sila Evason Hideaway and Spa Koh Samui last year for our Honeymoon. We love it. It was so romantic, private, away from the crowd, and charming. We stayed in Pool Villa with a great service from our lovely butler. The hotel staffs were very friendly and helpful. The hotel and room facilities are outstanding. Totally recommend. Planning to go there again this year around November.

[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please. ]

Hi drmsmq8,

I believe it is a 4-star hotel, but look like 5-star. We picked it because it offered the panoramic sea view. To answer your question, I will put it this way. This might help you plan you trip.

The total night spent was 5 nights booking the room via -snip-

We spent 2 full days at the hotel to enjoy ourselves, the hotel facilities, the pool, the spa, and water sport offered by the hotel. The other 2 days, we went out with the local tour guide during the day for elephant trekking, buffalo cart riding, monkey show, snorkeling, visiting the Big Buddha, visiting Grandfather & Grandmother Rock, and enjoy the local food offered along the way. The last day, we spent the time with each other in the hotel to enjoy the view.

At night, we just find a good and romantic dinning place. The first night, we went to “Dining on the Rocks” - a stylish gourmet restaurant with outstanding views (270 degrees view) is located in the hotel. You have to get there before its dark. Select your terrace and enjoy your dinning. The view is unbelievable such as private bay, waves crashing the rocks, and Koh Pha-Ngan. Try “Experience set dinner”, it’s 10 mini-courses which allow you to taste many dishes in one time. Uh! Don’t forget to order wine or you can bring your own.

The second night, we went to “Chef Chom’s” which was another restaurant that we tried. It was closed by the hotel. It offers Royal Thai Cuisine with home style Thai cooking with open-air terraces overlooking the sea. The food was also great such as Thai Salad, and the salmon dish. The taste was so good.

The third and forth night, we went to catch our night life at Chaweng Beach. It’s like a shopping mall at night. There are so many bars and restaurants. Everybody was so friendly. We had dinner at Captain Kirk located on Central Chaweng. It offers international and Thai food. Try the baked and grill seafood dishes. They’re good at it. The other local seafood restaurant was also good. I forget the name; I just asked the taxi driver to get me to local seafood restaurant that filled with Thai people. The food was so spicy but came back with lots of fun.

The fifth night, we're just enjoy ourselves at the hotel and taking some rest before getting back.

Hi - haven't been to Thailand before and coming to Koh Samui for a 'significant' birthday. Two adults, who like 'nicer' end hotels (but not ridiculously expensive!) preferably quieter or with adults only areas, but also like to be near a good beach and restaurants etc so we can walk out of resort and do some exploring.
