Meet the new wolf pups at Knowsley Safari

Knowsley Safari has welcomed the arrival of five new Iberian wolf pups into its fold, creating a 7-strong resident pack.

Summer visitors to Knowsley Safari will have a special opportunity to visit the Wolf Country habitat and glimpse these inquisitive animals as they dart in and out of the Foot Safari ferns.  Children will be delighted as they watch the pups chasing and rolling each other over and will learn the significance of this behaviour in establishing the dominance hierarchy within the pack.

knowsley safari wolves

The offspring of 8-year-old mother Morena and 10-year-old father Carlos, who can be seen keeping a watchful eye over them, the pups are approaching 12 weeks old.  Soon to be sexed and named, each weigh in at around 10kg, approximately a quarter of their parent’s weight.

Children and adults alike will have the fairy tale villain myths dispelled as they learn fascinating facts about this legendary species.  For instance, did you know a wolf howl can be heard over a mile away? Or that wolves use their distinctive calls to protect territory from rivals and call to other pack members?

Adam Kenyon, Head of Carnivores at Knowsley Safari said:

“Wolves are captivating animals that are very often misunderstood and have traditionally been villainised unfairly.  This summer is the ideal time to visit Knowsley Safari and witness the next generation of this species.

knowsley safari wolves

“The pups are currently going through a rapid growth stage and the behaviours that go alongside this – play hunting, feeding, establishing their place within the pack’s hierarchy – are a sight to behold, and not one that comes around often. I’d advise a booking a visit soon before this special time has passed!”

Native to Northern Spain and Portugal, Knowsley Safari currently holds the largest pack of Iberian wolves in the UK.  Pushed to the brink of extinction after centuries of being hunted by farmers concerned for their livestock, their role in the natural order is frequently overlooked.  Wolves control populations of animals such as rabbit, deer and boar, too many of which deplete forest and woodland vegetation, preventing the next generation of greenery to survive.

To ensure your visit to Knowsley Safari is as enjoyable and safe as possible, booking is essential.

Families can explore Wolf Country this summer and track wolves through the woods at a new safari attraction.

Iberian wolves have moved into a new interactive habitat on Knowsley Safari 's wild trail with the chance to see the wolves in a whole new way.

The trail is part of the Foot Safari which offers everything from sea lion displays, play areas, meerkats and giraffes.

knowsley safari wolves

Now guests arriving at Wolf Country will come face to face with a huge wood carving of a wolf.

Her gaze directs visitors along the first part of the trail where you can catch a first glimpse of the wolves as you venture into the wild trail and become a Wolf Ranger tracking wolves through the woods.

Visiters can use hidden peepholes to see the wolves, Maria and Morena, living at the edge of the wood shading in the undergrowth or climbing to the top of a hill.

There are also great facts to find and sense boxes to touch or smell.

And to celebrate the launch of the new interactive Wolf Country habitat Knowsley Safari is offering a special gift of their very own wolf toy to the first 100 children in wolf-related fancy dress this weekend.

50 of the wolf toys will be given away on Saturday, July 29 and the other 50 on Sunday, July 30.

Video: Knowsley Safari Park welcomes wolves

There's nothing big or bad about beautiful she-wolves Maria and Morena

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Visitors to Knowsley Safari Park had better not be now a pair of she-wolves are on the prowl there.

Not that there's anything big or bad about sisters Maria and Morena, as this video of the gorgeous creatures exploring their new habitat shows.

The Iberians arrived at the north west attraction from Gaia Zoo in Holland in December but had been living in a smaller, wooded area to help them get used to their new surroundings until now.

The aptly-named Eveline de Wolf, head of animal management at Knowsley, said: “Maria and Morena are settled in, and exploring their full habitat.

“They enjoy a regular feast of beef and rabbit, but keepers have also spotted them catching the odd mouse or other small resident in their enclosure."

Iberian wolves are a subspecies of gray wolf, indigenous to northern Portugal and northwestern Spain.

They came perilously close to extinction in the 1950s but populations are now recovering thanks to curbs on hunting, protection from zoos and safari parks and people moving from rural areas into cities.

Like all wolf species, they live in packs made up of adult pairs and their offspring.

Keepers hope to bring a male to Knowsley in future and eventually foster a small breeding pack.

Knowsley Safari Park Review

When we were invited to visit the amazing Knowsley Safari Park and review it – how could we resist? I mean who doesn’t love the idea of lions roaming around your car or monkeys hanging out of your wing mirrors? Where else can you get this close to animals without the risk of being eaten alive?

knowsley safari wolves

Knowsley Safari Park is located in Prescott, not too far from Liverpool.

MyBump2Baby’s Knowsley Safari Park Review

Opening times

Opening times were 10am – 5pm but the safari drive closed at 4pm.

I do advise checking the website for opening times before you go as the times above could have changed.

We spent around 4 hours in total at Knowsley Safari Park.

Ticket prices

I would recommend getting your tickets online if you can, ticket prices at the time of writing this are;

Please note: Prices may have changed since writing this review.

Knowsley Safari Park Review

Introduction

I hadn’t been here since I was a child so I had no idea what to expect, I can’t deny I was a tad nervous about my husband’s car being pulled to shreds but I was secretly more excited about seeing the monkeys up, close and personal. I love monkeys, I used to ask for one every Christmas but Santa never got me one – but apparantly monkeys aren’t always as friendly as they look.

knowsley safari wolves

Changing Facilities

There are changing facilities before you start the safari trip, George likes to drink a lot of juice so we got out here and changed George’s bum, I also felt it was important to have a nosey at the changing facilities for you all. They were in excellent condition and regularly cleaned by the looks of things, dirty baby changing facilities really annoy me especially when you are spending a lot of money for a day out.

Knowsley Safari Park Drive Review

We set off in to the Safari Park, I was actually dressed in army colours which was a complete coincidence but I really felt the part. As we drove towards the animals I couldn’t help but try and speak Australian (don’t ask me why).

I was so happy to see the animals roaming free across acres and acres of land. It was a beautiful day and it was incredible to see animals that we never normally see just running through fields like they are supposed to.

We made our way through the land and you could comfortably pull over at any point and have a closer peek at the animals in front of you. George was so excited as he is not used to seeing animals outside our car before.

knowsley safari wolves

The Rhinos at Knowsley Safari Park

One of the things I love most about animals is just how unpredictable they are. We were stuck behind a group of Rhinos because they decided to block the road and stay there, it was brilliant. A big jeep eventually came with staff members on board and they slowly guided the Rhinos off the road.

knowsley safari wolves

The Monkeys at Knowsley Safari Park

The great news is that you can choose if you want to enter the monkey part of the park. They do state that you enter at your own risk and if your car is damaged that is your own issue which is fair enough.

This was the part I ( cough cough I mean George ) was most looking forward to so I made Danny drive through. Luckily, there was a huge jeep in front of us which was so much more fun for the monkeys to hang out of than a normal ca, giving us the perfect view because we were right behind them. Lots of the monkeys had babies which was really cute to see.

Plenty of food had been scattered round to keep the monkeys close to your car to give you the best experience possible, I was a little worried about running them over as they are literally everywhere – it was like that scene from Jumanji at one point.

I absolutely loved the monkey part, no damage was done to our car, we spent around 20 minutes in this part and no damage was done to the other cars that I could see either.

knowsley safari wolves

There is just something so exciting about Lions roaming round your car whilst you sit comfortably and laugh in the face of danger. We decided this was THE place we wanted to park up and eat our lunch in. So we got out our chicken sandwiches and Aldi Curls and ate them as we watched the lions slowly walk around the cars. They didn’t come as close to our car as we wanted, it was a really hot day and they seemed to prefer the shaded areas but it was really fun being in the presence of Lions. Remember to put the child lock on!

The other animals at Knowsley Safari Park Drive

There are plenty of animals to look out for on the Safari drive including;

  • Forest Buffalo
  • Kiang Bison

Knowsley Safari Park on Foot Safari

I didn’t realise that Knowsley Safari Park has a foot safari too, the size of the foot safari isn’t as big as a normal zoo but they have a couple of shows on throughout the day and lots more animals to see. There are also rides for children to go on but these are not included in the ticket price.

Amur Tiger Trail

Knowsley Safari Park have only recently opened the “Amur Tiger Trail”, where visitors can walk through the woods exploring the forest in search of Tigers. This fantastic new exhibit is not only an educational tour but it also allows you to come face to face with real tigers thanks to the full length viewing windows.

Our experience of the Amur Tiger Trail

We were really excited to visit this part of the park and we walk through the forest on the hunt of tigers, this experience was completely pram friendly which was handy as George was getting a little cranky…. story of my life , we loved the idea of this fabulous new feature but unfortunately we didn’t see any Tigers at all, we hung round for a while but … nothing! As I mentioned earlier, the weather was really warm so it could have been they were hiding in the shade.

Wolves on the Wild Trail

There was a wolf’s habitat that we could look in to using the peep boxes, the peep boxes made it difficult to see anything other than straight ahead, we then walked round the corner and found a bigger space where we could look for the wolves but sadly we didn’t see any.

knowsley safari wolves

Bird Show at Knowsley Safari Park

We found the bird show really funny and clever, it is amazing what you can teach animals. The show was full of interesting facts and funny tails – we loved the bird show.

Sea lion show

Who doesn’t love a sea lions? The show was lovely and put together so beautifully, we were introduced to the lovely sea lions and watched them in their extremely funny comedy sketch, we really enjoyed this part.

knowsley safari wolves

Food at Knowsley Safari Park

The restaurant is called the “Oasis Resturant”, it has a good mix of warm and cold meals. The prices in the restaurant are reasonably prices. Knowsley Safari Park also appreciates that some families may prefer to bring a picnic and with that in mind there are numerous picnic benches places around the park.

What Knowsley Safari Park Missing?

Although there was a fantastic park for the kids to play in, I would have loved to have seen a soft play area for younger children, it just means there is a place they can cool down in the hot weather or stay dry and warm in the windy weather. It would have been good if there was a specific time that the tigers and wolves were fed so we could make sure that we definitely saw them.

Our Knowsley Safari Park overall score

Our day out at Knowsley Safari Park was a brilliant day for all the family, the ticket prices were reasonable, the entertainment was excellent and we had a fantastic day, as mentioned above – it would have been nice to see the tigers and wolves as they were a big feature at the Safari foot park but unfortunately we didn’t see them on this occasion.

Knowsley Safari Park revisited: A family's journey avoiding the baboon enclosure this time

U pon hearing that we were returning to Knowsley Safari Park, my four-year-old son exclaimed with alarm, "but not the baboons". On our initial visit last year to the Prescot-based wildlife adventure, we made the mistake of ignoring the warnings before the monkey enclosure.

Fear overwhelmed us throughout the trip as chaos ensued and our car still displays the aftermath of the encounter - one of our washer jets remains off-kilter.

Opting for a safer experience on our second visit, we decided to circumnavigate the perimeter of the baboon area, watching from afar as the infant monkeys interacted and observed their elders wreak havoc on passing cars - a rather endearing sight. The memory of last year's incident finally felt less traumatic as we watched a baboon brazenly snatch a windscreen wiper from a vehicle, seemingly in celebration - we could only breathe a sigh of relief it was not our car this time round.

For those who haven't visited before, Knowsley Safari Park offers more than just a drive-through experience. They also feature a foot safari with giraffes, an impressive tiger, adorable meerkats and birds of prey.

This half term, they've introduced a Seaside Carnival, which runs until Sunday, June 2. The carnival includes live performances from skilled acrobats and free activities and workshops such as aerial silks, hoola-hooping and plate-spinning, reports the Liverpool Echo .

There are also pier-themed game stalls like a coconut shy, Tin Can alley and hook-a-duck. Plus, you can enjoy a 25% discount when you book online this half term.

Of course, all the usual rides are still available. An unlimited rides wristband costs £12, and for some rides that require an adult, the adult rides for free.

This is a fantastic deal, especially for children aged between four and nine. While there are height restrictions on the rides, don't be fooled into thinking they're not exciting - my husband was quite pale after the sky ride!

Visitors are welcome to bring a packed lunch (just remember not to feed the animals), but there's also food available for purchase. We opted for fries from the food court, which were great value for money in a captive market.

At £2.85 for fries with unlimited sauces and £1.50 for a can of Coke, the prices at Knowsley Safari are commendably low, especially compared to the £2.80 we paid for a can of Fanta at Alton Towers the previous day.

In addition to learning from our previous visit and avoiding the baboon enclosure, we also followed our own advice by arriving early, enjoying the safari, rides, carnival and snacks, before embarking on another drive safari. Knowsley is a fantastic family day out and we're fortunate to have it so close by.

Here's my checklist from last time that proved useful this year as well:

Ensure you use the toilet before embarking on the safari.

There's a loo just before the drive safari gates, so make sure to use it.

Enter the baboon enclosure at your own risk.

Our experience last year was quite intense, so this time we were content to simply drive around. We observed the mischievous baboons taking over several cars within the enclosure - some emerged unscathed, others weren't as lucky.

But it's all part of the experience.

Arrive early.

Get there early and spend the entire day there, rounding off with another drive to see the amazing animals.

Tokens are required for the rides.

There's also a free playground if you want to keep costs down. However, I understand it can be hard to say no to your children, so an unlimited rides wristband is available for £12, while other rides cost between £1-3 per ride.

Bring snacks.

Bringing your own food can help keep costs down if you don't want to buy food there. Plus, bringing snacks is just good safari practice.

Tickets are priced at £22.50 per adult when you book online, £19.50 for children aged three to 15 and under threes are free. Find out more here.
