The best Royal Caribbean cruise ship for every type of traveler

Gene Sloan

What's the best Royal Caribbean cruise ship? We get this question a lot, and our answer always is the same: It depends.

It depends on what sort of traveler you are. Royal Caribbean is the world's biggest cruise line, and it has more ships than any other major line, including vessels in a wide range of sizes and with a wide range of amenities. While they all have a lot in common, they have some major differences, too, that make them more or less appealing to different types of travelers.

Some Royal Caribbean ships — such as the line's Oasis-class vessels and recently launched Icon of the Seas — are built with far more family-focused activities than others. Some, such as the two-year-old Wonder of the Seas, have added features that appeal to luxury-loving travelers. Other Royal Caribbean ships operate on particularly low-cost itineraries that are best for budget travelers.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In short, the best Royal Caribbean cruise ship for you, if you're traveling with children, might not be the same as the best Royal Caribbean cruise ship for a solo traveler or the best Royal Caribbean cruise ship for a retiree.

Here, we list our top picks for the best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for five different types of travelers.

Icon of the Seas: Best ship for families

royal caribbean 499 cruises

The best Royal Caribbean ship for families, in the unanimous view of TPG's cruise editors, is a ship that just debuted earlier this year: Icon of the Seas.

Sailing since January 2024, Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world — more than 6% bigger than the next-biggest ships in Royal Caribbean's fleet. That means greater space for the family fun zones that are a hallmark of Royal Caribbean ships, from children's clubs to water parks.

But it's not just its larger size that makes Icon of the Seas the best Royal Caribbean ship for families. As TPG saw during an early sneak peek at Icon of the Seas in January, Royal Caribbean has designed the vessel — the first of a new class of ships — specifically to cater to families in a bigger way.

For starters, Icon of the Seas has an increased number of cabins that offer extra bunks to accommodate families with multiple children, including new room designs. Some family suites even feature separate rooms for the kids.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Many of these family-friendly accommodations are near a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside, which is dedicated to families with young children. Surfside features splash areas for babies and kids, pools and lounge spaces for parents, family-friendly eateries and shops, and a bar with "mommy and me" matching mocktails for kids and cocktails for grownups.

Icon of the Seas also features the largest water park ever built on a cruise ship, with a record six top-deck waterslides and a cool new ropes course. Your teens will never want to sail on another ship.

Related: The ultimate Icon of the Seas review and guide

Icon of the Seas is just the first of three family-focused sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026 that will make up its new Icon class. The second ship in the series, Star of the Seas, will debut in 2025 and already is open for bookings.

Wonder of the Seas: Best ship for luxury lovers

royal caribbean 499 cruises

There's no doubt about it, Wonder of the Seas is the Royal Caribbean ship to book if you're looking to live the high life (and are willing to spend big bucks to do so). Unveiled in 2022, the world's second biggest cruise ship (after Icon of the Seas) was the first Royal Caribbean vessel with a private suite complex for the fancy set — a swanky hideaway with an upscale private lounge, restaurant and sun deck (the new Icon of the Seas has one of these, too, but we still rank Wonder of the Seas as our top Royal Caribbean ship for luxury).

If you book a suite in the complex on Wonder of the Seas, you'll be getting a luxury experience of the sort you won't find almost anywhere else in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Related: What's it like in Wonder's suite complex? We spent $11,000 to find out

Called the Suite Neighborhood, the complex offers some of the biggest (and priciest) suites at sea, including the sprawling, two-deck-high Royal Loft suites that measure more than 1,500 square feet.

A booking for one of the suites also comes with a bevy of perks, from complimentary Wi-Fi to private beach access at Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private beach destination in Haiti. Among the best perks: Access to private concierges who set up shop daily in the suite complex and will ensure you get prime seats at the ship's shows or a table at the always crowded Mason Jar eatery . On a ship that can carry more than 6,000 people, such reservations are a must.

Note the suite complex is a gated community — one where you'll only be surrounded by other swells who have paid top dollar for exclusivity. Nobody can get into the area unless they have a keycard showing they're a resident.

Related: The 8 best cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

With access to a stylish rooftop pool, loungers at the suite area's private sun deck and higher-level food in its private Coastal Kitchen eatery, you may never want to leave the enclave. However, this being Royal Caribbean, you'll also have access to a seemingly endless array of amusements from waterslides to aerial water shows just steps away.

Freedom of the Seas: Best ship for budget travelers

royal caribbean 499 cruises

Freedom of the Seas is the Royal Caribbean ship to pick when you're looking for a quick and affordable getaway — something that isn't a big commitment and won't break the bank.

Based in Miami, the 16-year-old vessel operates short three- and four-night voyages to the Bahamas that are often on sale for just $250 per person or less. That's not per day, mind you, but for the entire cruise. It's a lot more affordable per day than the two ships mentioned above, which are the belles of the ball in the Royal Caribbean fleet and command significantly higher rates.

For would-be Royal Caribbean cruisers, Freedom of the Seas serves as a sort of "test the line" ship. Its short sailings and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't have the time of your life. It caters heavily to first-time cruisers as well as Florida locals who can book on short notice and drive into the port for a quick escape.

One of three ships in the line's Freedom class that date to the mid-2000s, Freedom of the Seas is no longer the creme-de-la-creme of the Royal Caribbean fleet (though it was when it debuted). At around 156,000 tons, it's about 30% smaller than Royal Caribbean's newer Oasis-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces.

Related: The 7 classes of Royal Caribbean ships, explained

That said, Freedom of the Seas still has a huge amount to offer for all sorts of travelers, from couples to families with kids. The ship was, notably, the first in the Royal Caribbean fleet to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on its top deck — now a signature attraction for the line.

The vessel also has multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on its top deck. It also has one of Royal Caribbean's signature Royal Promenades in its interior — a mall-like space filled with eateries, bars and shops.

The only things you won't find are the most over-the-top Royal Caribbean attractions found on newer Royal Caribbean ships, such as zip lines, skydiving simulators and bumper car pavilions.

Quantum of the Seas: Best ship for solo travelers

royal caribbean 499 cruises

Royal Caribbean isn't particularly known as a major draw for solo travelers. In recent years, it's doubled down on the family market more than ever. That doesn't mean that solos aren't welcome on its ships or won't have a great time.

If you're looking for the best Royal Caribbean ship for solo travelers, you'll want to start with Quantum of the Seas and its Quantum-class sisters. It's the class of ships where Royal Caribbean made the most effort to appeal to solo travelers.

In designing the vessels, Royal Caribbean took a page from solo-targeting Norwegian Cruise Line 's playbook and added several cabins specifically for solos. Quantum of the Seas offers 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, each measuring from 101 to 119 square feet.

What's more, unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some of these cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is actually a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It may sound corny, but it works.)

Related: The best cruise ships for solo travelers

While the solo cabins on the Quantum-class ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge as they do on Norwegian ships, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels. It's a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak.

There's also quite a bar scene on Quantum-class ships, with a lot of counter-style seating in bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers. We recommend one of the two large bars at the Music Hall, where you can make new friends while sipping musically inspired cocktails and listening to live bands. If the Music Hall is too noisy for chatting up other solos, head to the sometimes quieter Schooner Bar.

In addition, Quantum of the Seas ships is particularly known for its unusual range of activities, from skydiving simulators to bumper cars that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Rhapsody of the Seas: Best ship for retirees

royal caribbean 499 cruises

For older travelers looking for a Royal Caribbean ship that isn't jammed full of children, it's hard to beat Rhapsody of the Seas.

Dating to 1997, Rhapsody of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest and smallest vessels, and it lacks nearly all the gee-whiz attractions for families found on newer Royal Caribbean ships. You won't find big water parks, kiddie splash zones, zip lines or bumper car pavilions on this ship.

For the most part, its top deck only offers pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s. As a result, it draws far fewer families than the vessels above and caters more to an older crowd of mostly couples.

Rhapsody of the Seas is also the ship that Royal Caribbean deploys on some of its most destination-focused itineraries, the type that have particular appeal to retirees looking to see more of the world.

Related: The 7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel

Over the next two years, for instance, Rhapsody of the Seas is sailing out of such less-common home ports as Colon, Panama; Cartagena, Colombia; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The sailings out of Colon and Cartagena offer the chance to visit Southern Caribbean ports such as Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao that aren't on most Royal Caribbean itineraries in the Caribbean. The sailings out of San Juan will also get you into the Southern Caribbean, while the sailings out of Israel and Cyprus offer a destination-heavy tour through the Eastern Mediterranean, including stops at multiple Greek islands.

At 78,808 tons, Rhapsody of the Seas is a third the size of the biggest Royal Caribbean ships. Expect a more intimate experience than what you'll find on the bustling Icon-class, Oasis-class, Quantum-class and Freedom-class ships mentioned above.

The vessel is one of four in the line's Vision class, featuring ships much smaller than the typical Royal Caribbean vessel. With this class, the experience has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience.

Bottom line

Royal Caribbean is the world's largest cruise line, with a large fleet of ships that cater to a wide range of traveler types.

While its biggest focus of late has been on the family market, it has ships that will appeal to luxury travelers, budget travelers, solo travelers and retirees as well.

The New Royal Caribbean Cruise Loyalty Status Match Program You Need to Know About

R oyal Caribbean Cruise Line has just announced an upgrade to its Loyalty Status Program. They will match loyalty status across all three Royal Caribbean Group brands. This means that if you hold status with Royal Caribbean, you will also be granted status with Celebrity Cruises and Silversea! Here are all the details about Royal Caribbean’s new status match program.

How Does the Royal Caribbean Status Match Program Work?

If you have loyalty status with one of the Royal Caribbean Group brands, you’ll now get matching status across all three brands: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea. For example, if you’re a Diamond member in Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society, you’ll become an Elite member in Celebrity Cruises Captain’s Club and achieve 250 VS Days status in Silversea’s Venetian Society.

When Does the Status Match Program Start?

The status match program for the Royal Caribbean Group’s brands will come into effect on May 30, 2024, and will be based on your status as of that date. Cruise passengers will receive onboard benefits starting on sailings from June 5, 2024.

Do You Have to Do Anything to Get the Status Match?

You don’t need to do anything to get the status match if you’re already enrolled in the loyalty programs. If you’re only a member of one loyalty program, you will need to enroll in the other 2 brands to get the status match in those programs.

What If You Are a Member of Two Loyalty Programs?

If you are a member of two loyalty programs, you will automatically receive the highest member level for those programs. That means if you are an Elite member in Celebrity Cruise’s Captain Club but only a Gold member in Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society, as a result of the status match program, you will jump up to become a Diamond member in Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society!

Can You Get a Status Match for Upcoming Cruises?

Even if you’ve never been on a cruise with a particular cruise line, you can sign up for their loyalty program before your first cruise and gain loyalty status right away. For example, if you’re a Diamond Crown & Anchor Society member but haven’t sailed with Silversea, you can join Silversea’s Venetian Society and enjoy the benefits of a 350 VS Days member on the very first day of your Silversea cruise!

Royal Caribbean Brand Status Match Table

Royal Caribbean Crown and Anchor Society Exclusions

If you became a Diamond Plus or a Pinnacle Club member through the status match program, you will be excluded from certain benefits that regular Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club members enjoy. Royal Caribbean’s Next New Cruise Ship Debuts in Less Than 50 Days

Ben Souza

The world’s largest cruise line, Royal Caribbean, is about to get even bigger when their next new ship debuts in less than 50 days.

Utopia of the Seas, the 6th Oasis class ship from Royal Caribbean

Utopia of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean’s sixth Oasis class ship.  The Oasis class ushered in the era of mega cruise ships when the first debuted back in 2009.

Utopia of the Seas will be the second largest cruise ship in the world when it sails its maiden voyage on July 19, 2024. The ship will homeport at Port Canaveral and sail three and four night cruises to The Bahamas.

The three night weekend cruises will depart on Friday and return on Monday. The four day cruises will depart each Monday and return on Friday.

Both itineraries will make two port stops, one in Nassau and the other at the cruise line’s insanely popular private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.  The four night cruises will also have one sea day. You can view prices on cruises on Utopia of the Seas here .

Since it is an Oasis class ship, it will have the following features:

  • Studio B, ice skating rink
  • AquaTheater
  • Boardwalk with carousel
  • Central Park with live trees and plants
  • The Ultimate Abyss slide (43 feet longer at 259 feet)
  • Rising Tide bar
  • Sports Court
  • Aqua Dunes mini-golf
  • Enclosed Solarium
  • Waterpark with the Perfect Storm waterslides
  • 10 story high zip line

The cruise ship will have more than 20 dining options. The infographic below shows all the amazing places to eat on Utopia of the Seas.

Earn loyalty rewards easier: Royal Caribbean launches cruise status match program

royal caribbean 499 cruises

For Royal Caribbean cruise passengers, it pays to be a repeat customer.

Royal Caribbean Group announced a new loyalty status match program on Thursday, allowing guests to get equivalent status across its Royal Caribbean International , Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises brands.

“As we orbit around our customers, this new program gives them one center of gravity to orbit around us,” president and CEO Jason Liberty told USA TODAY in an email. “We are always looking for new ways to enhance our guest experiences across our portfolio. We have many loyal guests who sail with each of our brands, and now, we are giving them new ways to explore the world, with the right product to meet them for all of life’s moments.”

How does the Royal Caribbean Group Loyalty Status Match program work?

Passengers who are enrolled in more than one of the brands’ loyalty programs can get one-for-one matches. Faithful Royal Caribbean International guests who have moved through the ranks of its Crown & Anchor Society can try a cruise with Silversea for the first time, for example, and board with equivalent-tier status in the line’s Venetian Club – and enjoy the associated perks. Travelers can find more information on the company's website.

Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity already had some limited reciprocity, but the new program is more comprehensive.

“Our new Loyalty Status Match program will allow our loyal guests to try each of our brands, and a product will exist for them without compromise,” Liberty said. Guests’ status will be automatically matched within seven days of being enrolled in more than one brand's program.

When will the program take effect?

Passengers can access onboard benefits through the status match program starting with cruises departing on or after June 5.

What are the perks of cruise loyalty programs?

Cruise line loyalty programs give guests a number of perks that can help make travel easier and save them money.

Benefits for Celebrity’s Captain’s Club members, for instance, range from a special newsletter and welcome event to specialty dining discounts and complimentary laundry, among others. Liberty said during an earnings call in April that the company was seeing repeat guests more than 30% higher than 2019.

The status match program “not only rewards our loyal guests across the fleet but adds new ways for them to experience our products and see the world,” he said in the email.

Carnival is taking on Royal Caribbean with its own $600 million private resort — see Celebration Key's planned features

  • Carnival Cruise Line is set to launch its new private destination, Celebration Key , in 2025.
  • The $600 million project has amenities similar to Royal Caribbean's private island.
  • Carnival is "clearly following Royal Caribbean's footsteps," one analyst told Business Insider.

Insider Today

Step aside, CocoCay. Royal Caribbean's private island could soon face some serious competition.

About 140 miles east of Miami, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay receives thousands of eager families virtually every day of the year, drawn to the private Caribbean island's irresistible waterpark, beach clubs, and family-friendly amenities.

The tropical destination has become a massive hit with the cruise line's guests. And it seems Carnival, which also targets cruising families, wants a slice of its competitor's winning pie.

Carnival already operates its own private island, Half Moon Cay.

royal caribbean 499 cruises

But what's better than one exclusive port? Two of them.

The cruise giant is now building another destination just for its guests: Celebration Key, a mile-long resort-like getaway on Grand Bahama Island .

The $600 million project, Carnival Corp's largest, is set to open in 2025 — a sign that the company is "clearly following Royal Caribbean's footsteps," Patrick Scholes, lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in March.

Carnival’s promises for its private destination might sound familiar.

royal caribbean 499 cruises

Royal Caribbean's private island has a waterpark with 14 slides and children's play areas.

Similarly, according to Carnival's recent announcement, Celebration Key will have a large, family-friendly freshwater lagoon with two 350-foot-long waterslides and a children's water playground.

It's a scaled-back version of CocoCay's popular feature — for now. Looking ahead, Carnival said it plans to build a waterpark and zipline course, too.

Celebration Key would also offer amenities like ping-pong, basketball, and volleyball.

royal caribbean 499 cruises

As you might've guessed, these activities are also available on Royal Caribbean's island as well.

Looking to escape the sound of screaming children? Carnival says Celebration Key will have a separate adult-only section, again with frills reminiscent of CocoCay's recently opened pool club (as in, a swim-up pool bar, a DJ, and no kids in sight).

It wouldn’t be a cruise-owned private island without up-charged amenities.

royal caribbean 499 cruises

Travelers at Perfect Day at CocoCay can splurge on private beach clubs, cabanas, shopping, food, and alcohol.

The same goes for Celebration Key. In fact, "You'd be surprised at how much people are willing to pay to rent cabanas for the day," Josh Weinstein, president and CEO of Carnival Corp, told investors in late March.

Like CocoCay, Carnival expects its private destination to be a big money maker with increased ticket revenue and "incremental in-port spending," Weinstein said. Plus, it'll be near Florida's major cruise ports, allowing Carnival to save money on fuel — another major benefit to owning private Caribbean properties.

Celebration Key is already included in over 500 of Carnival’s itineraries across 18 ships.

royal caribbean 499 cruises

We're still a year from its debut, but that's not stopping the company from planning the expansion of its upcoming property.

Carnival said it'll spend $100 million extending Celebration Key's pier, which, when completed in 2026, will allow it to accommodate four of Carnival's largest cruise ships.

By 2028, the cruise line says the destination will be able to accommodate 4 million travelers annually.

Major Cruise Operators Slash Summer Prices Despite High Demand - Here's Why

Zinger key points.

  • Cruise lines reduce summer prices despite high demand.
  • Caribbean and Alaskan cruises see significant price cuts.

Big cruise line operators like Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd RCL , Carnival Corp CCL , and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings NCLH are reportedly cutting summer cruise prices to fill cabins, say travel agencies and company websites.

This adjustment comes as more ships head to popular destinations like the Caribbean and Alaska while rerouting from the Red Sea due to ongoing conflicts between Israel and Hamas, Reuters reports.

Despite record demand and increased revenues, cruise prices for trips departing from the U.S. this summer are lower than last year, Reuters quotes from AAA data.

Royal Caribbean's seven-day itineraries in the Caribbean and Bermuda are down 21% year-over-year for June. Norwegian and Carnival cruises in the same region are down 12% and 11%, respectively, as per TripAdvisor's Cruise Critic.

Royal Caribbean is also reducing rates for Caribbean trips in the third and fourth quarters, according to Todd Elliott, CEO of Cruise Vacation Outlet. "It seems more strategic on sailings that need a little more help," Elliott told Reuters.

He added that cruises around Africa, instead of through the Red Sea, are also seeing price cuts.

An AAA spokesperson says older ships are being discounted as newer vessels enter the market. For instance, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Sea, which debuted in January, commands $500 to $1,000 more per person than similar regional cruises.

Royal Caribbean raised its 2024 profit forecast in April for the second time , while Carnival reported record bookings in the first quarter of this year .

Similar price reductions are seen in Alaskan cruises this summer due to increased capacity. Carnival's Alaskan itineraries for July and August are priced about 20% lower than the same period in 2023, while Royal Caribbean's prices for the same months are 6% and 12% cheaper, respectively, Reuters quotes Cruise Critic.

Price Action : RCL shares were trading higher by 0.18% at $148.23 on the last check Thursday.

A cruise passenger on the Royal Caribbean “Icon of the Seas” cruise jumped overboard, prompting a search and rescue mission where the passenger ultimately was found dead.

The passenger jumped from the 1,200-foot-long ship shortly after it left Miami, Florida, for Honduras Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Coast Guard obtained by The New York Post.

Once people noticed the emergency, the ship immediately halted its operations and the 2,350-person crew conducted a search-and-rescue mission. The ship stayed put for two hours, according to Cruise Hive.

The passenger was brought back onboard in critical condition. He eventually died of his injuries.

It is unclear what caused the man to jump, although his identity is being kept secret for the privacy of the deceased individual and his family.

The “Icon of the Seas,” which is the world’s largest cruise ship, took its maiden voyage in January 2024.

Royal Caribbean launches industry-first loyalty status match program for cruises

See more about how the new program works below.

This photograph taken on July 24, 2022 shows a general view of the Wonder of the Seas cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International at the Terminal C of Barcelona's harbor.

Mega ship cruise line Royal Caribbean International is making waves rolling out an industry-first status matching program for loyalty members.

The company announced Thursday that members of Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society, Celebrity Cruises’ Captain’s Club and Silversea’s Venetian Society will attain equivalent tier status on any one of its brands to enjoy reciprocal benefits no matter which brand they sail with.

PHOTO: In an aerial view, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, billed as the world's largest cruise ship, heads out to sea for its second voyage from PortMiami, Feb. 3, 2024, in Miami.

The status matching across the core brands will help guests take advantage of existing benefits as well as unlock new experiences, with more than 50 ships sailing to nearly 1,000 destinations across all seven continents.

Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said in a statement that the new move "rewards guests traveling across our brands" adding that all three "have passionate fans who take pride in the status they've achieved through repeat sailings."

The company said this newly aligned program is part of Royal Caribbean Group’s "ongoing commitment to deliver the best vacations responsibly."

Seamless Status Recognition: Members of Crown & Anchor Society, Captain’s Club and Venetian Society are now eligible to receive one-for-one status match across all three brands after enrolling in each program.

Onboard Benefits: When sailing on each sister brand, guests can enjoy the onboard benefits offered by each brand for their equivalent tier status.

Effortless Tier Matching: Guests already enrolled in multiple loyalty programs will be automatically matched across brands within 7 days to ensure guests receive their appropriate loyalty status.

Enhanced Travel Experience: Status match enables guests to select from a broader and more diverse range of vacation experiences and destinations.

There are four status tiers within each brand's loyalty programs and now, members will be able to status match for upcoming travel on a sister brand.

"For example, a Venetian Society member with 250 VS Days and an upcoming sailing on Celebrity Cruises can enroll in Captain's Club, which would give them Elite status once their loyalty accounts are connected," the company detailed.

These new benefits onboard for members who have their status matched will begin with sailings departing on June 5.
