Kevin Smith — aka Silent Bob — on tour Down Under: “That’s where I’m sexy, man”

CULT filmmaker Kevin Smith is on his way to Australia ... with a spoiler that will shock fans of Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob.

RATHER than have you stumble on it by chance, let’s get Kevin Smith’s big spoiler out of the way upfront.

The cult filmmaker who brought us Clerks , Chasing Amy and Dogma is currently scripting the third film in a strange trilogy that began last year with Tusk and will be followed by next year’s Yoga Hosers . (This isn’t the spoiler).

Moose Jaws , the writer-director explains, is “like Jaws , only with a moose”. (Still not the spoiler).

Smith and Jason Mewes ... The tandem team better known as Jay and Silent Bob are in Australia this week for the An Evening with Kevin Smith stage show. Picture: Supplied.

Smith will appear in the film with his constant screen companion, Jason Mewes — the pair better known as Jay and Silent Bob. And this is where the spoiler comes in. So if you really mustn’t know, now is the time to jump three paragraphs ahead.

“I just finished writing the scene where — spoilers — Silent Bob gets eaten by the moose. That’s how he f---ing goes out!” Smith marvels, like he’s just cracked the code to the greatest ever self-killing-off.

“Isn’t that fun? I was talking to Jay about Moose Jaws and I’m like, ‘I’m thinking about bringing us in as the Captain Quint character’. And he goes, ‘Yeah, but Quint gets killed!’ I was like, ‘One of us has to get eaten’. And he was like, ‘You. Not me’. I was like, ‘Why?’ And he was like, ‘Because I wanna be in other movies!’ Fair enough, dude.

“So, rather than let him go out with dignity,” Smith laughs, “he’ll be eaten by a f---ing moose.”

On board ... Smith has re-recruited Mallrats stars Shannen Doherty and Jason Lee for a 20-years-coming sequel. Picture: Supplied.

There is little chance this aforementioned spoiler will be the last we see or hear of Kevin Smith. Turns out, 11 released feature films into his career, making movies isn’t even what the New Jersey native does best.

“I’ve gotten better over the years ... But me doing a podcast? Me standing on stage chit-chatting? That’s where I excel. That’s where I’m sexy, man. I can really rock a story. I can capture your imagination and make you walk out of a place thinking you could try something, too.

“Sometimes I think I made Clerks just so I can be like, ‘Hi, my name’s Kevin Smith and I just wanna talk to you for the rest of my life ...’ ”

Smith was lured into the talking game when movie industry kingpin Harvey Weinstein told him there was no money to promote Clerks , so Smith would have to get out there and tell his story. “Once you get that first taste of a packed house laughing at something you said,” he recalls, “you want more”.

Hence he’ll be back in Australia this week with a stage show titled An Evening With Kevin Smith. The first half is he and Mewes translating their Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast schtick on to the stage. The second half is Smith doing a Q&A with the audience.

Ben Affleck, seen here with Mewes and Smith in the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ... Will he be too busy saving Gotham to make the Mallrats sequel? Picture: Supplied

Upon his return to the US, Smith will dive into shooting his long-awaited Mallrats sequel. Last week, he announced he’d found his mall. Now he just needs to find all the actors he worked with 20 years ago.

“So far, so good. I’ve talked to 17 of the 18 returning cast members that I need and they’ve all said yes. The only person I haven’t approached is Mr Affleck — Batfleck himself. If Gotham doesn’t need him, hopefully he’ll jump on.”

Yesterday the comedian told fans at Oz Comic Con in Brisbane to never give up on their dreams, citing his pursuit of comedy as the reason for his youthful spirit.

'If you give up your dreams you kind of die – the kid in you dies,' the Courier Mail reports him as saying.

'As an adult you’ve got to have some make pretend time and that make pretend time is your dream.

'I’m a parent so I have to act like an adult in some situations but I get paid to play pretend for a living. I work like a dog but it’s not really work because it’s what I want to do.”

AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH – THE JERSEY BOYS TOUR – ANNOUNCED FOR SEPTEMBER 2015

ACT 1 – JAY & SILENT BOB GET OLD ACT 2 – Q&A WITH KEVIN SMITH

Kevin Smith Australia 2015

Kevin Smith, the actor, writer and director of the cult trilogy of New Jersey films that began with 1994’s Clerks, has announced an Australian tour in September, accompanied by co-star Jason Mewes.

Australian fans will have the opportunity to see their slacker heroes on stage doing what they love best: telling stories and making fun of each other, followed by a Q&A session with Smith. The tour starts at Sydney’s State Theatre on Friday 18th September, then on to Brisbane for two shows; an early and a late performance on Saturday 19th September, both at The Tivoli Theatre, then Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Monday 21st September, the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide on Wednesday 23rd September and finishing up in Perth on Saturday 26th September at the Riverside Theatre, PCEC.

Jay and Silent Bob, Mewes and Smith’s cult alter-egos, quickly became much-loved icons after the release of Clerks, winner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival and the Prix de la Jeunesse Award at Cannes Film Festival the same year. Their characters have gone on to pop up in Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2, all of which were written and directed by Smith.

Well known for his long and often hilarious talks and Q&A sessions, Smith is also a celebrated writer for both the DC & Marvel Comics empires, penning comics on legendary characters including Batman, Daredevil, Spider-Man and Green Arrow.

He can also be heard daily at Smodcast.com, his vast network of podcasts.

Smith’s other films include Jersey Girl (2004) starring Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), and more recently the horror movies Red State (2011) and Tusk (2014), which had its premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival (“Smith has delivered a left-field surprise that ranks among his best work.” – Variety).

He is currently working on Mallbrats, a sequel to Mallrats, due for release in 2017.

An Evening with Kevin Smith is a chance to get up close and personal with one of the most distinctive voices in US independent filmmaking and comedy.

Smith shines in Vic PGA first round

kevin smith australia tour

Unheralded Kevin Smith has taken the first round lead in the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links after an opening 67 in windy conditions on the Mornington Peninsula.

Teaching PGA Professional Smith put his stellar opening round down to “dumb luck”, but he made six birdies and just the one bogey at the par-three third hole where he missed a putt of less than a metre.

The 38-year-old secured his place for this week by finishing in the top three of the PGA Professionals Championship of Victoria at Commonwealth last month. He leads by a shot from Brad Kivimets, Peter Lonard, Josh Clarke, Dimitrios Papadatos, James Grierson, Michael Sim, and Andrew Martin.

“Just luck. I’ll put it down to luck,” Smith said after his five-under par round on the Legends course in the morning.

“I know it sounds ridiculous, but it was just luck. It was windy. But the course is awesome. You see it pretty early on and as long as you get the ball rolling on line it’s not going to miss. The greens are so good.

“So it was just dumb luck. It could be the absolute opposite tomorrow. I finished fourth to last or something here last year, so if I improve on that, I’m happy. I know that sounds ridiculous.”

Smith, who hails from Waverley Golf Club in Melbourne, turned professional in 2012 but lost his playing card after a year and turned to teaching. He completed a greenkeeping apprenticeship at his home club, and more recently worked as the manager at Warburton Golf Club outside Melbourne and he is now teaching and in the shop at Drummond Golf in Dandenong.

“I’m just happy to play,” he said. “Someone will go lower, someone will shoot nine under today, one of these guys who’s a decent player. You can tell. Someone will go crazy.”

No one did “go crazy” as the 50km/h morning winds proved the best time of the day to play.

Portsea club pro Kivimets, who also graduated to the field via last month’s event in Melbourne, and two-time Australian Open champion Lonard, took advantage of the early conditions to card 68s.

“On the sixth hole the wind really started to pick up, but I was somewhat comfortable with these conditions. It forces you to hit one shot and you can’t overthink it,” Kivimets said.

In the afternoon, the New South Wales trio of Clarke, Papadatos and Grierson, plus Queenslander Sim, slogged it out to put themselves in a good position in the tournament’s initial stages.

For Papadatos, things looked far more bleak when he was two-over through three holes and thinking “maybe 78. I was packing my bags”.

“I got off to a terrible start. I missed a really easy birdie on one and bogeyed two and three, so it wasn’t looking good. I just hung in there and hit a couple of good shots coming in.”

Meanwhile, 28-year-old Grierson relished the challenges the weather and the course presented today.

“I had a fair bit of control over my ball, which was nice,” he said.

“I tried to hold myself to my high standards, and if I signed for 73 or 68 or whatever it is, treat myself to how I can do it and go from there.”

“I love hard golf. It means you have to hit the fat of the green, pars are gold, and for some reason I love that type of golf.”

Defending champion Christopher Wood is two shots from the lead alongside Victorians Ben A Campbell and Edward Donoghue, New South Welshmen Andrew Dodt and Justin Warren, and Queenslander Shae Wools-Cobb.

Only 26 professional players in the field of 90 broke par for the day and they’ll tackle the Legends Course again tomorrow to try to secure their place for the weekend which will be staged on the Open Course.

In the teams event – the Victorian Celebrity Amateur Challenge – the pairing of Andrew Dodt and Matt Hogg sit atop of the leaderboard at ten-under par, while Mitch Davis and Luke Delany are T2 one shot back in a share of second place with Brock Gillard and Charlotte Thomas.

For the first time since 2014, New York singer songwriter Kevin Devine will make his long awaited return to Australia for a special and intimate acoustic headline tour in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide proudly presented by Destroy All Lines Devine’s 20-year career includes nine full-length records, 11 EPs, 12 Devinyl Splits, three albums with his band Bad Books, and now a wildly-successful Patreon called “Social Club,” which delivers fans new original music, cover songs, livestream concerts, archival recordings, and more, every month. “It’s like on my headstone it could say, ‘Not famous, but beloved by those who knew,’” he laughs. “I authentically feel like I won the lottery that that’s the truth.” But that feeling doesn’t halt what Devine describes as “the Russian nesting dolls of distorted, warping influence” that encourage insecurity and competition in working musicians. “That’s late-stage casino capitalism,” he says. Devine cites Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith as formative aesthetic and ideological influences, but mourns how capitalist music industries chewed up both artists. “I kinda wish neither of those people were any more famous than playing 500-capacity clubs, cause I think it was bad for them,” he says. He cites Smith’s tattoo of Ferdinand the Bull, the titular character of the childhood story of a bull who refuses his role in bullfighting and instead longs to sit among the flowers. Devine reads the story now to his daughter. Neither Cobain nor Smith could change the bullfight, despite their best efforts to disorder and unsettle it. Ferdinand’s greatest and most instructional success, says Devine, was to simply leave the arena. “I wanna figure out a way to just get as far away from the bullfight as possible,” says Devine. Joining Kevin Devine on all dates is indigenous singer songwriter Jimmy Kyle from the band Chasing Ghosts playing songs from latest EP ‘Homelands Unplugged’ and fan favorites from his career discography.

Burning questions: Intrigue hangs over Steve Smith's bullish reply to short-ball tactics

Liam O'Loughlin

Australia will look to continue their stellar Test form in the coming weeks, with the world's top-ranked side set to take on the West Indies in a two-game series.

After securing a series clean-sweep against Pakistan earlier in the summer, the side will now regroup to take on an under-strength Windies outfit, with a number of the struggling nation's key players unavailable due to T20 commitments.

For the hosts, the recent retirement of David Warner has seen two massive changes to the batting lineup - Steve Smith moving to opener and Cameron Green returning to the side in the No.4 role - ending plenty of selection speculation and ushering in a new era for the Test team.

With so many question marks heading into the opening Test, let's take a look at the five burning issues for the Australia-West Indies series below.

Steve Smith will take on a fresh challenge against the West Indies.   Getty

How will Steve Smith fare in new role?

He's been the talk of the town in between the two home Test series this summer, with Smith's well-documented switch from long-time No.4 batter to a new-found role as opener creating plenty of intrigue for the series.

The 34-year-old has made the selfless decision to replace Warner in a bid to allow Green to return to the side, as well as hopefully recreating the form that saw him become the world's best red-ball player.

Smith averaged 38.80 against a solid Pakistani bowling attack, reaching a half-century on just one occasion, with his slow scoring rate and uncharacteristic dismissals creating some slight concerns about his future.

He will now achieve a rare feat when he steps out to bat for the first Test, going from batting at No.9 in his debut match in the baggy green over a decade ago and filling in at every other spot, marking an incredible transformation within the Australian setup.

From No.9 to opener: Smith's astonishing transition

His average at No.3 - which is the closest he has ever been to opening - is the highest of any spot Smith has batted, while a unique stat surrounding him entering the crease within the first two overs was also uncovered on social media recently.

Smith was quizzed on the potential of facing an early short-ball barrage from the Windies attack in Adelaide, brushing the tactics aside and revealing his confidence in the role, comparing it to batting in the middle-order.

"It's pretty game, I suppose, with a brand new ball; bowling short stuff and wasting it ... I think it helps the scoring rate for sure when you're facing the new ball and there's a bit more attacking going on," he said.

"That's probably kept me quieter and made me face a lot more balls to score runs (at No.4). Perhaps that changes a bit with the new ball, you have a bit more attacking fields and more gaps out there to score runs.

"You'd obviously have a feel for the wicket, what the ball's doing, the pace of the wicket and all those kinds of things. It certainly helps spending that time out there before those things happen."

While the decision from the selectors has certainly divided opinion, there is reason to believe Smith can excel while opening the batting, given his record higher up the order and his previous white-ball performances in the role.

Smith will partner Usman Khawaja, with the Aussies going with a left-hand, right-hand combination for the first time since Joe Burns opened alongside Warner in late-2020.

Cameron Green of Australia warms up prior to day one of the third Test against Pakistan at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Will the return of Cameron Green at No.4 pay off?

One of the brightest young talents in Australian cricket will be back in the Test arena against the Windies, with the 24-year-old slated to move up the order and look to cement himself in the baggy green.

With an impressive Sheffield Shield record in the No.4 position, Green will now get the opportunity to showcase his ability at international level, with Smith backing the Perth product to shine in the role he has left behind.

"He's a good player and I think he's suited to number four," he said.

"He plays there in Shield cricket, he does well there, and I think he's a bit like me in terms of I don't think he likes to wait too much.

"It is a good opportunity for him, and that was part of my reason for wanting to go up the order. It wasn't selfishly just because I wanted to, it was to get Greeny in to bat at four and give him that opportunity."

Green's average for WA in first-class cricket sits at 46.77 from 56 innings, scoring nine centuries in the process, but his numbers drop significantly at Test level, averaging 33.59 and reaching triple-figures just once from 36 innings.

He's been touted as the golden boy of the Aussie system and selectors were keen to move arguably their best player to accommodate him, so now it's time for Green to repay that faith and live up to his enormous potential on a consistent basis.

Jason Holder will be missing in action for the under-strength West Indies.  Getty

Can the West Indies provide any resistance?

They were out here last summer and struggled to stop the Aussies - so how on earth are the Windies going to cope without Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers?

Two of the side's best players have opted to play domestic T20 cricket as opposed to being selected at Test level, with seven debutants named among the extended squad for the two-game series Down Under.

Justin Greaves is likely the pick of the bunch, averaging 26.97 with the bat and 22.76 with the ball, while fellow all-rounder Kevin Sinclair has a similar record and has been touted as a future star for the Windies in the international arena.

Last summer, the Windies were defeated by a total of 583 runs across the two matches and their performance at Adelaide saw them rolled for just 77 in the second innings.

West Indies chief selector Desmond Haynes is remaining optimistic - perhaps blindly - of the side's chances against a red-hot Aussie outfit.

"The squad has been affected by the unavailability of some key players," he said.

"Australia away is always a challenge, but we are confident in our team."

The only players in the squad with notable Test success are captain Kraigg Braithwaite and vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, as well as veteran paceman Kemar Roach.

Young talents such as Tagenarine Chanderpaul - the son of the legendary Shivnarine - and wicket-keeper Josh Da Silva will provide a glimpse into some potential shining lights for the Windies in their long-term future.

Josh Hazlewood could be due for a rest soon.   Getty

Should the Aussies rest any of their bowlers?

It's been a hectic schedule for the star trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, with the experienced quicks starring in the ODI World Cup in India before featuring in all three Test matches against Pakistan on home soil.

All three seamers performed well in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, with the skipper earning Player of the Series honours with two five-wicket hauls and bowling 89 overs across the three fixtures, finishing with 19 wickets.

Hazlewood also had a high workload, bowling 84 overs against Pakistan, while the big left-armer Starc steamed in for 83 overs in the series whitewash.

From a spin-bowling perspective, Nathan Lyon missed the second-half of the 2023 Ashes series due to a calf injury but returned without issue and should be on deck for both matches against the Windies.

None of the fast-bowlers reported any major injury concerns and got through unscathed, but could benefit from a quick freshen-up prior to a much tougher series away from home next month against New Zealand.

Scott Boland has been named among the extended squad for the Aussies and could easily slot into the XI at any stage, while tearaway speedster Lance Morris has been in line for a Test debut for the past 12 months and is knocking on the door, despite being omitted from the touring squad this time around.

Usman Khawaja during the Boxing Day Test.

Will this be the last home series for Usman Khawaja?

The recent retirement of his close mate and opening partner has prompted some speculation regarding Khawaja's own Test future, with the veteran left-hander celebrating his 37th birthday last month.

Khawaja has been a revelation at the top of the order since locking down the spot two years ago, dominating in red-ball cricket across the globe and scoring over 1200 runs las year, placing him at the top of the run-scoring list of all Test-playing nations.

In an interview with Nova 96.9 prior to the Pakistan series, Khawaja remained non-committal when quizzed on his playing future and explained why there is no clear end date for his time in the baggy green.

History-makers

Windies skipper's powerful 'message' over Test schedule

"I could have retired five years ago, I could retire now," he said.

"There are some things that are out of your control, like how the body's going. It's also how the mind is. I'm still really enjoying the games, I don't really have a finishing line.

"It's not about what age I'm at, it's more about the factors - if one of them drops off, then I'll think maybe it's time. It just hasn't dropped off yet."

Khawaja will have time to wind down throughout the winter months after the tour of New Zealand, but the opener will turn 38 in the midst of the five-game series against India on home soil next summer, which appears more likely to be his last Test series in Australia.
